 HISTORY Gothenburg was founded by Olaf Bergstrom. Union Pacific laid out the original town of 8 blocks. These 8 blocks are parallel to the tracks, but not to the federal land grid system. William Ehmen acquired the second section and laid it out according to the grid system. This accounts for the unique bend in the streets outside of downtown. Swedes and Germans settled the area. The town was named for Goteborg, Sweden, but railroad officials gave it a German Spelling. The first business building was built in 1883 by E.G. West. The first news paper was published in May, 1885. Gothenburg became a town on July 8, 1885, after reaching a population of 300.

 POPULATION The population of Gothenburg is 3,574. The community is constantly growing with new industry and is full of people who care about its future.
