Last Results LastWeek’s Week (Nov. 7) #3 Southern Illinois #9 South Dakota State

34 15

Southern Illinois dominated South Dakota State to secure at least a share of SIU’s fifth conference championship and its seventhstraight playoff appearance. The win was the 13th conference victory in a row for the Salukis, as they tied UNI’s MVFC record for the most consecutive league victories.

Youngstown State #11 UNI

7 28

UNI redshirt freshman RB Carlos Anderson posted his first career 100-yard game, racking up 113 yards on 17 carries. Derrick Law carried 12 times for 58 yards and senior quarterback Pat Grace had 13 carries for 42 yards, finding the endzone twice in the contest.

Indiana State Missouri State

7 31

Missouri State was able to convert three Indiana State turnovers into 14 points and accumulated five sacks to turn back the visiting Sycamores. QB Cody Kirby became the all-time leader in MSU history by connecting on his 37th career TD in the first half.

Western Illinois Illinois State

7 25

Illinois State kicker Zach Kutch set a new career, school, and Missouri Valley Football Conference record by kicking six field goals in the Redbird’s 25-7 win over Western Illinois. RB Cliffton Gordon scored the ‘Birds only TD of the day on his way to rushing for 124 yards.

2009 Missouri Valley Football Conference Weekly Release (Nov. 9) Players of the Week (Nov. 7) Offense RB Deji Karim, Southern Illinois Sr., 5-11, 200, Oklahoma City, Okla.   Karim became the first all season to rush for over 100 yards against South Dakota State, as he had 127 yards on 21 carries in SIU’s 34-15 victory. He averaged 6.0 yards per carry and had long runs of 27 and 41 yards. The Jackrabbits came into the game only allowing 89 rushing yards a game, but behind Karim the Salukis marched to the tune of 280 yards on the ground. He went over 1,500 career yards rushing in the game, as he became the 19th Saluki ever to do so.

Defense S Lance Caldwell, Southern Illinois Sr., 6-1, 215, Detroit (MI) Bishop Gallagher   Caldwell accounted for both of SIU’s interceptions in the 34-15 win at South Dakota State on Saturday. His first one came late in the second quarter and he was able to return it 75 yards for a TD. It was the fifth-longest interception return for a scored in Saluki history. Caldwell’s second interception came in the third quarter when SDSU had the ball in the red zone. On a fourth-and-five at the SIU nine, Caldwell picked off Thomas O’Brien in the end zone to prevent a score.

Special Teams PK Zach Kutch, Illinois State 5-9, 175, Sr., Milton (Fla.) Auburn   Kutch set a school and conference record with six field goals made in Illinois State 25-7 win over Western Illinois. The Milton, Fla., broke the school record (4) and league record (5) with those six field goals, which included a career-long 48yarder in the second quarter. Three of Kutch’s field goals were 40 yards or longer (48, 40, 45) and four out of the six were made in the third quarter.

Offensive Lineman OG David Arkin, Missouri State 6-5, 298, Jr., Wichita, Kan.   Because of injuries on the Missouri State offensive line, David Arkin moved from his usual spot at right guard -- where he had started the previous 31 straight games -- to his first-ever start at left tackle in Saturday’s 31-7 win over Indiana State. He graded out at an amazing 87-percent and recorded six knockdown blocks while helping the Bears secure their fourth winning season this decade.

We’re No. 1

After a convincing win at South Dakota State last week, SIU jumped two spots from No. 3 to No. 1 in the polls. Six Valley Football teams have been No. 1, and the league has had a No. 1-ranked team in seven of the past eight years (2002-03-04-05-07-08-09). All but one league school (South Dakota State) has been No. 3 or better at one time in their history, with Indiana State, Southern Illinois and Youngstown State also achieving No. 1 rankings prior to membership.

Crowd Control

UNI played in front of 70,585 fans at Iowa in the season opener, matching a school record for its largest road crowd. Missouri State played in front of 55,572 at Arkansas (the second-largest road crowd ever for MSU), while North Dakota State’s crowd of 48,831 at Iowa State was the third-largest road crowd for the Bison. SDSU’s all-time record is 46,617 (at Iowa State in 2008): ALL-GAME ATTENDANCE MARKS (current members)

North Dakota State - 2 weeks (2 weeks in 2008) UNI -- 11 weeks (5 weeks in 1992, 6 weeks in 2007) Southern Illinois - 14 weeks (2004, 2005, 2009) Western Illinois - 1 week (Sept. 8, 2003) Western Kentucky - 4 weeks (end-2002, and in ‘05) Youngstown State - 8 weeks (in 1997 and in 1998)

Valley Football’s No. 1-ranked Teams

Southern Illinois claimed the league’s automatic berth for the FCS playoffs with Saturday’s win at South Dakota State. The 2009 season will mark the seventh-straight playoff trip for SIU, matching UNI’s league record for consecutive post-season berths. CONSECUTIVE PLAYOFF APPEARANCES, MVFC:   7 - Southern Illinois (2003-current)   7 - UNI (1990-96)   4 - Western Kentucky (2001-04)   3 - Western Illinois (1996-98) CONSECUTIVE APPEARANCES, NCAA History: 16 - Montana (1993-current) - does not count 2009 10 - Eastern Kentucky (1986-95)   7 - Southern Illinois (2003-current) - counts 2009   7 - UNI (1990-96)

Wrapping It Up, Almost

South Dakota State travels to Minnesota this Saturday in the second-to-last regularseason non-conference game for the MVFC in 2009. The league has combined for an 11-14 non-conference record, but that includes eight games at FBS sites. The league is an impressive 10-5 against teams from the FCS. In 2008, the MVFC was 11-8 at home against non-conference teams while posting a 3-12 road record.

Success Against the FBS

The MVFC has 27 victories against FBS schools since 1985, including at least one every year from 1996 through 2003, and three in the past three years. Southern Illinois (at Indiana in 2006, and at Northern Illinois in 2007) became the first league school since Western Illinois (2002 and 2003) to win against an FBS opponent in back-to-back years. SIU’s win at Indiana is the only for the MVFC against the Big Ten (1-26 all-time).

PK Zach Kutch of Illinois State had six field goals in ISU’s 25-7 victory against Western Illinois (Nov. 7). He’s the first player in league history to connect on six treys in a game: MOST FIELD GOALS, Game: 6, Zach Kutch, Illinois State, vs. W. Illinois, 2009 5, Rich Ehmke, E. Title Town

In the league’s first 25 seasons, UNI has won or shared the title a league-best 14 times. Western Illinois has the second-most Valley Football titles, with five. Southern Illinois, with its title this year, has five titles: Previous Missouri Valley Football Champs 1985 - UNI* 1986 - Eastern Illinois 1987 - UNI 1988 - Western Illinois 1989 - MSU 1990 - UNI/MSU* 1991 - UNI 1992 - UNI 1993 - UNI 1994 - UNI 1995 - UNI/E. was the first meeting between two teams with 6-0 league records. The last time the league had a decisive Saturday similar to last weekend’s SDSU-SIU game in Brookings was in 2005, when UNI claimed the league’s automatic bid on the final weekend of the regular season with a 25-24 victory against SIU. That forced a three-way co-championship and UNI won a tiebreaker with the tri-champs (SIU, YSU).

Southern Illinois (7-0) will be looking to join nine others to record a perfect conference season when the Salukis host Missouri State on Saturday, Nov. 14. In 2007, UNI (6-0) became the ninth team in league history to win the conference title with an undefeated record. Before that, Southern Illinois (2004) was the last to do it. Illinois State (1999), Western Illinois (1988 and 1997) and UNI (1985, 1987, 1994, and 1996) have also gone unbeaten. SIU is the only to go 7-0 (2004 and 2009); UNI was 5-0 in 1985 and 1996; and the others were 6-0.

In 2007, UNI set a league record by winning six road games. Only 12 teams in league history have won five road games in a season and all of them reached the playoffs. No previous league team had claimed six road victories in a season, although both Western Kentucky (2002) and Youngstown State (1997) won six away from home in a season as each won the national title in those respective seasons. Southern Illinois (3-0) and SDSU (3-0) are perfect on the MVFC road this year, while Missouri State has won four league road games in a row, dating back to last year. SIU’s road winning streak in league games is at six games, and the Salukis are 4-1 on the road this year. Team (Season)

In Elite Company

WR Eyad Salem hauled in eight

passes for 127 yards and moved over 2,000 yards receiving for his career at ISU. Salem now has 2,116 career receiving yards, good for fourth place on the all-time list to pass Vito Golson (2,014). Salem has five games over 100 yards receiving this season, one shy of tying Laurént Robinson’s tally of six games over the century mark set in 2005, and has 10 100-yard receiving games in his career.

He Did it Again

RB Cliffton Gordon surpassed the 100-yard mark for the second consecutive game with 28 carries for 124 yards. Gordon became the first Redbird running back to run for more than 100 yards with 30 carries for 122 yards last week at Missouri State. The sophomore also scored the Redbirds’ lone touchdown against the Leathernecks and leads the team with seven touchdowns scored this season.

The Wins Keep Coming

The Redbirds have now won three in a row. It’s the first three-game winning streak for Illinois State since 2006, when the ‘Birds rattled off six wins in a row after a season-opening loss at Kansas State. Saturday’s win over Western Illinois also marked the first win by the Redbirds at home against the Leathernecks since 1999. Senior DE Daniel Millington has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V First Team. Millington advances to the national ballot for ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America awards. A graduate of Terre Haute North Vigo High School, Millington carries a 3.91 grade-point average in exercise science.

Special Teams

Indiana State has been solid in special teams, as the punt return squad ranks 56th nationally with an 7.8 yardsper-return average. That mark is good enough for sixth in the MVFC. Individually, Darrius Gates averages 27.21 yards per kickoff return which is second in the league and eighth-best nationally.

Closing Out With A Win?

The Indiana State football team won its first Missouri Valley Football Conference contest of the season on October 24 in a 17-14 Homecoming victory over Western Illinois. The Sycamores conclude the season on Nov. 14 against North Dakota State. If the Sycamores earn a victory in that contest, ISU will finish the season with multiple wins for the first time since the 2004 campaign and with multiple league victories for the first time since 2002.

Close By No Shutout

The Bears were within five-and-a-half minutes of securing their first shutout since 2004 in an eventual 31-7 win over Indiana State. The defensive gem marked just the third time in the Terry Allen era (2006-present) that MSU had allowed less than 10 points in a game and second time this season. The last MSU shutout against an FCS foe was 9/21/91 vs. Prairie View A&M (61-0).

Ruder Awakening

MSU defensive end Mikel Ruder had a break-out game against Indiana State with a career-high 10 tackles, including 2.5 sacks. He was in on three of the team’s five sacks in the contest and his 5 solo tackles was a team high in the win over the Sycamores.

History in the Making

With a 6-4 ledger, the Bears have secured their fourth winning season this decade and second in four seasons under Terry Allen. MSU has not had a seven-win season since 1996 and has posted seven or more wins in a season just four times in its Division I era (1982-present). Likewise, Saturday’s win over Indiana State pulled the Bears’ all-time record even at 438-438-39 and secured the team’s fourth conference win for the first time since 1993. The club has won five conference games in a season just twice since joining the MVFC (1989, 1990).

Pass Happy

Redshirt freshman Carlos Anderson surpassed the century mark in rushing yards for the first time in his collegiate career against Youngstown State. Anderson rushed 17 times for 113 yards and scored on a 12-yard jaunt in the first quarter. Anderson was just as effective returning kicks as he tallied returns of 48 and 43 yards for 204 allpurpose yards against the Penguins.   The Panthers’ 28-7 victory over the Penguins was UNI’s ninth-straight win in the series. The nine-straight victories in a series ties a Panther school record against an opponent. UNI defeated Augustana nine-straight times from 1947-1955 and from 19601968. The Panthers also beat Morningside (1959-1967), North Dakota (1947-1955) and South Dakota State (1964-1972) nine-straight times.

Long Scoring Drives

The Panther offense got back on track against Youngstown State. All four of UNI’s scoring drives were at least eight plays long. The game is scheduled to be broadcast on the Big Ten Network. The teams have not met since 1933, but the Gophers lead the all-time series, 6-0, outscoring SDSU, 265-13.

In the loss to Southern Illinois (the first home conference loss for SDSU in two seasons), the Jackrabbits ran a season-high 83 plays, compared to 62 by SIU. Lunt Gets Career High

Western stepped up its passing game as redshirt-freshman QB Wil Lunt threw for a career-high 188 yards and a TD against the Redbirds.

Tough in the Red Zone

The Leatherneck defensive force was able to stop Illinois State from scoring twice in the red zone and only allowed one touchdown as field goals accounted for the rest of their points.

Homecoming, of Sorts

This week’s game at UNI is familiar territory for acting head coach Mark Hendrickson as a former panther player and 1980 graduate of UNI. Coaches Hendrickson and Terry Allen of Missouri State actually played together for three seasons at UNI as Allen served as quarterback and Hendrickson started at wide receiver. Current UNI mentor Mark Farley followed the pair at UNI as a linebacker, earning league defensive player of the year honors in 1985.

Ball Security

The Penguins and Lafayette are the only two FCS teams who have lost just two fumbles this season. YSU did not lose a fumble for the first 18 quarters of the year before Kevin Smith lost a fumble at the start of the third quarter against MSU. Brandon Summers lost a fumble vs. WIU on Oct. 10.

Wins vs. Losses

In four victories, YSU has caused 14 turnovers while giving the ball up just five times. In the red zone of those victories, YSU is 14-of-18 (78 percent) while its opponents are 5-for-9 (56 percent). In the five defeats, YSU has committed 11 turnovers while causing just three. In the red zone, the Guins are 1-of-7 while opponents are a 18-of-19, including 14 TDs. In the wins, YSU has 18 TDs compared to just three in its losses.

Dependable Duo

UNI has had recent success against the Leathernecks in the series, winning six of the past eight games, but Western Illinois has won three of the past four meetings in the UNI-Dome.

Wide receivers Donald Jones and Dominique Barnes have combined for 107 receptions, 1,150 yards and nine touchdowns this season. Last year in a 12-game regular season, the two combined for 69 catches, 878 yards and 10 scores. In their two years together (21 games), they have 177 receptions for 2,020 yards and scored 19 times.
