ADVANCED HIKES

If you’re an expert on the trails looking for more advanced routes, the hiking trails at Mount Mansfield are going to offer more challenging ascents, but with rewarding views. The Long Trail, Cliff Trail, Haselton Trail and Hell Brook Trail will each provide a challenging climb as you explore Vermont’s tallest peak.

WHAT TO PACK FOR YOUR HIKE

Whether you’re setting out for a quick stroll or an all-day trek, having the right gear ensures a safe and enjoyable hiking experience in Stowe. Here’s what to bring:

n Sturdy Footwear – Trails in Stowe vary in terrain, so wear supportive, weather-appropriate hiking boots or shoes with good traction.

n Layers of Clothing – Weather in the mountains can change quickly. Wear moisture-wicking base layers and pack a light jacket, even in warmer months. In fall and spring, bring an extra warm layer for higher elevations.

n Water & Snacks – Stay hydrated with plenty of water and bring high-energy snacks like trail mix, granola bars, or fruit to keep you fueled.

n Navigation Tools – A map, GPS, or a fully charged phone with offline trail maps ensures you stay on course. While many trails are well-marked, cell service can be spotty in some areas.

n Sun Protection – Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat help shield you from UV rays, especially on exposed trails and at higher elevations.

n Bug Spray – In late spring and summer, mosquitoes and ticks can be active, so pack insect repellent to stay comfortable.

n First Aid Kit – A small kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, blister pads, and pain relievers can come in handy for unexpected scrapes or discomfort.

n Headlamp or Flashlight – Even if you’re planning a daytime hike, a light source is helpful in case your trek takes longer than expected.

n Trekking Poles (Optional) – For steep or uneven trails, trekking poles provide stability and help reduce strain on your knees.

n Leave No Trace Essentials – A small trash bag and an awareness of Leave No Trace principles help keep Stowe’s trails beautiful for everyone.

No matter the season, being prepared means you can focus on the best part—enjoying the adventure.

BINGHAM FALLS

Located directly off Mountain Road (Route 108), Bingham Falls is another popular hike leading to spectacular waterfall scenes. The hike has quickly become one of the most popular waterfall hikes in Vermont due to its easy access, impressive geology and stunning scenery ideal for photography. The hike itself is only about a quarter-mile down to the falls, but it is steeper at the bottom and often can be wet and slippery, which is why it is categorized as a more moderate level despite it’s short distance. Proper hiking shoes with good tread are highly recommended.

MOSS GLEN FALLS

A short drive from Stowe’s historic village, Moss Glen Falls is the tallest waterfall in the state of Vermont, cascading 85 feet. The hike to Moss Glen Falls is popular due its short and easy terrain, easily manageable for anyone who may not consider themselves an advanced hiker. For most people, the highlight of this hike is the waterfall itself, which is only about a quarter-mile (approximately 10 minutes) from the trail head, but guests can keep going past the falls for a longer outing. Hikers can view and photograph the falls from both the base and a higher vantage point.

Expect it to be busy since fall is one of the most popular times of year to visit. Plan ahead as best you can and book lodging, activities and reservations in advance. Allow extra time for travel due to increased fall traffic.

EXPLORE STOWE’S COVERED BRIDGES

Covered bridges are a quintessential part of New England’s charm and Vermont’s countryside is dotted with more than 100 of these historic gems. In Stowe, you’ll find three particularly stunning covered bridges, each with its own story and unique design, just waiting to be admired and photographed. The gentle hum of the river beneath and the rustic beauty of these structures invite you to slow down, take a deep breath and appreciate the timeless elegance of our landscape. As you explore, be sure to visit all three—it’s an experience that’s as picture-perfect as the bridges themselves.

GOLD BROOK COVERED BRIDGE

Also known as Emily’s Bridge, this bridge was built in 1844 and is the oldest Howe Truss bridge in Vermont. The bridge is famously said to be haunted by Emily’s ghost with reported sightings of ghostly apparitions under the moonlit sky. Located at the intersection of Gold Brook Road and Stowe Hollow Road, Emily’s Bridge can be accessed from Route 100 via Gold Brook Road.

BROOKDALE BRIDGE

Located at one end of the Stowe Recreation Path, the Brookdale Bridge was built in 1964 and spans the West Branch Little River. This particular bridge is a “stringer” covered bridge, meaning it was made with stringers instead of traditional style trusses. Visitors can access the bridge via Brook Road off of Route 108. There is a small parking area for the recreation path on the left right before the covered bridge.

Visit Throughout the Seasons

No matter the time of year, covered bridges in Stowe offer a glimpse into Vermont’s history and a picture-perfect setting that transforms with the seasons. In spring, these storied structures frame rushing rivers and budding greenery, creating a peaceful contrast between the fresh bloom of the landscape and the timeless wooden beams. Summer brings dappled sunlight filtering through the trees, inviting visitors to pause and soak in the charm of these rustic crossings. In fall, covered bridges take on a postcard-worthy glow, surrounded by fiery foliage that makes each bridge feel like a step into a classic New England painting. And when winter arrives, a dusting of snow turns them into something straight out of a holiday scene—quiet, serene, and beautifully framed by frost-covered trees. Whether you’re visiting for the history, the views, or simply the peaceful moment of crossing from one side to the other, Stowe’s covered bridges offer a new perspective with every season.

RED COVERED BRIDGE

Built in 1896, the Red Covered Bridge is located in Morristown and is only a 10 minute drive from the Stowe village. The bridge carries Cole Hill Road across Sterling Brook and features an odd king post truss with a superimposed queen post system. Follow Route 100 out of Stowe heading towards Morrisville and take Stagecoach Road. Turn left on Sterling Valley Road and the bridge is located less than two miles on the right.

TAKE A SCENIC DRIVE

Extend your trip slightly by passing Barrows Road and taking Trapp Hill Road to pass the von Trapp Family Lodge & Resort to take in the scenic views on the property.

Smugglers’ Notch to Jeffersonville: The scenic drive through “The Notch” is a popular drive among visitors and locals alike. The historic smuggling route is known for its winding nature and rocky cliffs. The road through Smugglers’ Notch is only open to drivers in late spring, summer and fall. The road is closed to automobile traffic in the winter, but transforms into a winter playground for snowshoers and cross-country skiers.

Sterling Valley and Mud City The Sterling Valley is unique in its backcountry feel. Explore the two valleys running south from the crescent of the Sterling Range. Both were once busy farm areas; now only a few active farms remain. This drive brings you through the quaint, local backroads of town and takes you past a classic, red covered bridge on Sterling Valley Road.

Stowe Hollow: Stowe Hollow is nestled at the foot of the Worcester Range, along the Gold Brook. Perhaps the most famous covered bridge in the area, Gold Brook Covered Bridge, also known as “Emily’s Bridge,” is located at the intersection of Gold Brook Road and Covered Bridge Road. Follow Stowe Hollow Road along the scenic mountain range and then take the legendary Route 100 back to Stowe. On your way back, you will pass two of Vermont’s most popular attractions: Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory and Cold Hollow Cider Mill.

Understanding mud season is pivotal to visiting in the spring. As the snow melts and the ground begins to thaw, it can create muddy conditions on trails and dirt roads. Be prepared to adjust your plans in the event of soggy conditions.

Check for any closures during this time of transition to ensure your desired activities and attractions are operational. Check ahead for restaurant openings, trail conditions and attraction schedules to make the most of your visit.

VERMONT’S SWEETEST SEASON

SPRING’S ARRIVAL MARKS THE START OF MAPLE SUGARING SEASON.

Anytime from late-February through April, billowing white clouds of maple steam, rolling off the evaporators of nearby sugar houses, fill the air with a faint trace of sweetness. Stowe offers a few options for visitors hoping to watch the sugaring process. Local sugar farms will open their business for viewing and offer tours throughout the season. Take in Vermont’s sweetest season during the statewide Maple Open House Weekend, typically held in late-March, organized by the Vermont Maple Sugar Makers’ Association, one of the oldest agricultural organizations in the United States.

SIP ON PERFECTION

Vermont is proud to have more craft breweries per capita than any other state in the nation, a testament to the state’s rich brewing tradition and commitment to high-quality, locally crafted beverages. From craft beers to fine wines, spirits, and ciders, Vermont’s local brewers, vintners, distillers, and cider makers continue to set the bar for innovation and quality. Stowe is home to some of the best, offering visitors the chance to taste locally made beverages in a stunning setting.

GUIDED TASTING TOURS

While some of these brew houses offer on-site tours, another way to customize your craft beverage tour of the area is through guided tours like Savor Vermont and 4 Points VT: Brewery Tours. Experience the best, local brew spots from friendly, knowledgeable locals. No need to worry about driving; sit back, relax and let your guide navigate the area.
