Introducing: Harlem Fashion Row

BY: Nubia Santos

Harlem Fashion Row (HFR) is a significant organization that connects audiences with emerging designers of color in Fashion. HFRʼs mission is to ʻdiscover and showcase emerging talent of color through a platform of national events and customized multi-platform programsʼ. I had a chance to not only attend but to host the Fall 2013 Fashion Week Fashion Show. The event was held at the world famous Apollo Theater in Harlem New York and was presented by Smart Water. The Fashion show gave a chance for 7 emerging designers of color to showcase their collection to a supportive audience, which included expert fashion insiders Designers Deidre Jefferies, Evelyn Lambert, Chantell Walters, Kimberly Goldson, Sandro Romans, Shauntele and Kahindo Mateene were also competing for a chance to be selected to showcase their spring/ summer ʻ14ʼ collection in September. There was a proficient panel of judges that included Fashion Icon Bethann Hardison and Actor/ Model Tyson Beckford. The audience also got a chance to vote for who they felt should come back. The four designers that were choosen were: Brooklyn born and raised Kimberly Goldson who has also been on Project Runway. DC based Deidre Jefferies who has a spy inspired line called Espion Sandro Romans who has a menʼs line that has an edgy urban feel. Kahindo Mateene uses African influence prints to create her line Modahnik. We got a chance to sit down with Espion Designer Deidre Jefferies and ask her a few questions... Continue on next pg.

WHERE DO YOU DRAW YOUR INSPIRATION FROM AND HOW DO YOU CHOOSE YOUR COLOR PALETTE: The deepest part of my inspiration is the "superwoman" inside all of us. The many roles we play, the amazing feats we have to perform to manage our daily lives & everyone else's. It's fascinating that we look so put together while saving the world. I create my designs & choose my color palette solely on what it is I would like to wear personally for the next season. ESPION is my dream wardrobe. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNER AND WHY: My favorite designer right now is Riccardo Tisci for Givenchy. He gives everything to his collections and the end result is always next level. DO YOU HAVE ANY CRAZY PARTY TRICKS YOU CAN DO: No party tricks but I love to host my family & friends. I make a mean roasted asparagus wrapped in smoked salmon & and my white sangria usually kicks the party up a notch... or two. HOW DID IT FEEL WHEN YOU GOT THE NEWS YOU HAD BEEN SELECTED FOR SEPT.: I was so excited and feeling really blessed! Each of the designers were very talented, so I felt honored to have been selected. That was the best news!!! WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU FOR SPRING '14' COLLECTION: This will be my first spring collection, so I want to put forth something that even surprises me. I always start with a sophisticated palette, but I have a feeling it will end up electric!

Style 411 with Daphne Blunt

Daphne Blunt hosts Look of the Week on Fanlala.com Q: Is it ok to wear dark and bold colors in the spring? DB: Yes. Absolutely. It’s very mod and a really popular trend aka color-blocking. I also think that black with white is very chic in any season.

Q: What are some must haves for Prom this season? DB: Must haves for Prom are sparkly shoes. I have talked about that on “My Look of the Week” show. I also talked about how you could put your hair up with cute accessories and different handbag ideas in that episode. Q: What are some of the hottest trends for teens this spring? DB: Some of the hottest trends are pale pastel colors, black and white geometric patterns. I especially love the trend of lucite (clear) accessories.

Daphne Thinks Neon & Statement Jewelry are HOT trends. She thinks Tie-Dye is NOT and she’s on the fence about Polka Dots!

Meet Face Mentor: Naomi Cambell What has been your favorite part of being a coach on The Face? Iʼve really enjoyed mentoring my contestants on “The Face.” Iʼve taken all of the lessons that I learned from my 27 years in the industry, and shared them with my girls in order to help them grow and succeed. I am very aware that I have the potential to change these girlsʼ lives by putting them on the right path and launching them into the world of fashion. I take my role as coach very seriously. Being in the industry for a while, how do you think the industry is different from when you started? The modeling industry is certainly more corporate than it was years ago. There are lots of great things that have not changed over the years – itʼs still an exciting industry with lots of talented models and genius designers, and the thrill and adrenalin rush of the runway still exists! Out of the 3 contestants that you have left on your team, is there a front runner that you think could win the competition? I think all of my remaining contestants are very strong, and all have the chance to become the next face of Ulta Beauty. Youʼll have to tune in to see who wins! What is some of the best advice you have given your team that helped them through the competition? Iʼm very honest and Iʼm quite tough with my girls. I wonʼt be with them to hold their hands as they go through castings, so I praise them when they do things great and coach them to help them improve. And when they do something thatʼs not quite right, I guide them and give them feedback and suggest new ways to do things. I want to help them grow and improve. CHECK OUT OUR SISTER MAGAZINE, ZEPHRA MAGAZINE WWW.ZEPHRAMAGAZINE.COM

Do you enjoy working with a contestant that has experience as a model or one who is new to the game and has room to mold into a great model? Each girl is different and each girl has her own unique qualities. I enjoy working with experienced models as well as newcomers.

Meredith’s music career is taking off as well. Recentlly, she recorded and shot a music video of her new song, “Celebrity.” That was the first song she every wrote. It became an over night success reaching over 1 million views on Youtube. She started being approached by bloggers, news shows app and many people wanting to write a story about it. Vanessa Marano stars as Bay on the hit ABC Family show, “Switched at Birth. ”Switched at Birth” is about two teens that find out they were switched at birth and one of the girls is hearing impaired. Vanessa is so poised as she showed up to the LA set for our cover shoot. 411: What is it like working on the set of “Switched at Birth”?

VM: I love it, all the actors and the crew get along really well and I think we’re all really happy to have a job and we want to give it our all. 411: How would you describe your character, is she anything like you?

VM We’re very different, VERY differVM: ent. The way we approach people is very different. The only thing similar obviously since I’m playing her and you have to put a little of yourself into your character, I would say our humor is similar.

VM: Nope not at all! There’s so much from this show that I found that I was doing wrong.

411: How do you feel about reality TV, do you think it takes away from the actors of the world?

VM: A lot of people have that point of view but I’m actually a fan of reality TV because I think it made television better.

But then again if it’s that good, it won’t survive because people won’t always want to be watching reality television. Whereas, I think Homeland and New Girl, all those shows that are so good right now, really raise the bar. I think that is more likely to survive because the cast is that much better.

411:Being an actress, you were homeschooled, what do you think are the pros and cons of that?

VM: Oh, I loved being homeschooled. The only reason I loved being homeschooled was because I was an actress but I think even if I wasn’t an actress, I would still love being homeschooled. I’m a control freak and being homeschooled gave me a lot of freedom and control of where I was at. I think I would have hated regular school. I found it much better working with like 40 year olds and that’s probably very strange {laughs} but nevertheless, I loved it!

411: Do you enjoy dressing up for red carpets, working with a stylist and being in the Hollywood limelight?

VM: Ha. {laughs} there’s pros and cons to it, I think fashion is a different business and I think when it comes to red carpet events it really is like a business. There’s definitely a lot of people breathing down your necks to make sure you’re wearing what they want you to be wearing. It’s not necessarily going to be what you want to be wearing but there is a fun part to it. I remember one 411: Being an actress on a cable network, how do you time, I went to this event and it think it’s changed since the writers strike? was kind of a big deal and I totalVM: It changed a lot. I wear a lot of black in my real like wearing heels. That aspect life as well. That’s how we are similar but of it, I do like. 411 then there’s also a lot more of skirts happening and crazy layering. Actor’s Spotlight ...

Natalie Dreyfuss

411: What drew you to your character Chloe on The Secret Life of the American Teenager? ND: Chloe is the kind of girl that will bounce back no matter what has happened to her. I love that in a character. She doesn't wallow in sadness she pushes through and finds a way. 411: What would you say is your favorite to do‌ TV series or Movies? ND: I like television. It's fast and keeps you on your toes. My favorite tv shows are comedies, especially ones you can shoot in front of a live audience. 411: Who have you enjoyed working with the most? ND: On Secret Life I got to work with Ken Baumann a lot and I have been friends with him for years. It's always fun when you know each other and then get to play siblings. 411: What is a day like on set for you? ND: It's a lot of waiting. I think people don't realize how much you sit and wait. There are so many people working to make the project happen it takes time.

411: Would you say you are a lot like your character Chloe or complete opposites and why? ND: I'm spunky and outgoing like Chloe, but we definitely have had different lives. She has a lot of damage from her past that I am lucky I didn't experience. 411: How would you describe your characters fashion compared to your own? ND: When we first see Chloe on the show she is wearing her "work clothes". They are very promiscuous. I never dress like that. Later in the show when she is adopted, she dresses more like a normal teen. I dress a little less formal than that in life but still girlie. f there were one item of clothing you could take with you from set what would it be? I had these awesome ballet flats by Sam Edelman that I got to wear on set. They are so comfy and cute. (Continued on Pg 36. )

411: Can you tell us a little about your character on Shameless? EK: Debbie is a middle child, kind of lost in the mix. She is really smart, responsible and loyal, but also a loner. 411: What is like working on that set? EK: It is so much fun. Its like one big family not only because of the actors but also a lot of the crew have worked on Shameless since season one so you really get to know everyone. 411: At what age did you start acting? EK: I started at 4 but not really for acting. I only took improv classes for fun because I didn’t like any other activity. My teacher was a lot of fun. Her name was Kerry Lea and she is Jesse and Hallie Eisenberg’s sister. We spent the class pretending differdi ent scenes. She would say “ok I own a candy store and its closed and you have to convince me to open it up”. 411: Is there an actor or actress that inspires you? EK: I get asked that a lot and I think I give different answers every time!! But I guess any actress who went to college and has other interests other than just acting, like directing or writing scripts, stuff like that. That is the type of actress I look up to and want to be like. (Continued on Pg. 37 )

As for Chloe, there are some fun twists and turns in her story where you get to see how much she has changed since she got this new life. 411: How did you get into acting? Was there anyone you inspired to? ND: I have been around sets and actors most of my life but I never thought it was going to be something I loved to do. After taking my first acting class, I was hooked. I am inspired by strong, funny women in this industry such as Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. 411: What message do you hope the show will bring forth to the viewers? ND:Teenagers will always have secrets and no one is alone no matter how they are feeling or what they are experiencing. 411

(Haley Pullos from Pg.32 ) 411: You did an interview with Peta about animal adoption and how its important to give your animal companions lots of love and proper care. Why is this so close to your heart? What do you hope speaking out will accomplish? HP: I have always been an animal lover! I hope speaking out will help bring up the awareness of the benefits of adoption versus breeding. Animals are loving creatures and deserve to be loved in return. 411: What would you say is your favorite thing to shoot‌ Movies or TV Series/Spots? HP: I really like shooting soap operas because they move so quickly. I am a very fast-paced person and I love the challenge that it provides me. Typically, we only get one opportunity to rehearse, so it's important to get it right the first time. Of course, movies and primetime television are also awesome! Actors from those types of show get to perfect their delivery because there is more time to get it right. What is currently on your ipod? Oooh - I like this question! Lana Del Rey, The Lumineers, The Black Keys, Ed Sheeran, Marina & The Diamonds,
