THE RIGHT MAN FOR THE RIGHT PRICES Interview with pricing manager Dennis van den Bussche Gosselin Mobility works closely with over 450 moving agents from every corner of the globe. Dennis Van Den Bussche is in daily contact with them.

Our pricing specialist tells us more over a cup of coffee.

Dennis started out as a moving coordinator eight years ago. Over the years, his interest in the pricing aspect steadily grew, and eventually he became one of our pricing managers at Gosselin Mobility. “Among other duties, I plot out the pricing policy for Belgium, Germany and the countries where we don’t maintain a physical office,” Dennis explains. “Together with my pricing colleagues from Italy, UK and Switzerland, we form the agent relations team.”

“Although we work with moving agents all over the world, this is particularly the case in the regions where we don’t have our own offices, such as the United States. Starting and strengthening a partnership gives me a lot of satisfaction,” Dennis says. I always try to achieve a win-win-win situation in which the partner company, Gosselin Mobility and the customer all derive benefits from the partnership. Every day I try to strike a balance between the best possible service and the best possible price.”

“The great thing about this business is that we all speak the universal language of mobility. Whether you are Argentinian, Japanese, American or Turkish, young, old, man or woman, Christian, Muslim, Jewish or Hindu, no matter what your background is, we understand each other across borders. This also applies to countries that might not always have good diplomatic relations with each other on the political stage. Close friendships can be made even across all these barriers,” Dennis continues. “I often work with numbers and spreadsheets, but mostly with people. If by the end of the day my colleagues and I have been able to make sure a move is

successful, then my mission is accomplished.”

Dennis has not yet met the majority of the agents in person. “An agent will drop by on average once a week. After our meeting, I always give them a tour. Our companies may operate in similar ways, all the more so because we mostly work with agents who, like

us, are also members of FIDI and IAM. The visitors are often really surprised about the size of our mobility and logistics facilities in Antwerp,” Dennis says.

“Anyone who wants to come see us is welcome! We always have coffee and Belgian chocolate ready for our guests!”

In a former life... ... Dennis made dentures. “Aside from a diploma in marketing, I also have a dental technician diploma,” Dennis laughs. “It didn’t take me long to realize that making implants, crowns and dentures for the rest of my life was not the job of my dreams. This is why I decided to change course completely eight years ago.

I started as a move coordinator and felt the click immediately.”

A CLIENT TO LIKE Setting up the competence center for a new big client.

We are willing to go far to offer our clients the best possible service. For our new client, a large internet company, we set up an entirely new team. Read the interview with Silvia Ciubotaru, team leader of the competence center.

Not just flexible, but super flexible Our client's payroll boasts nearly 30,000 employees working at 55 different locations. “With the exception of Antarctica, the company has offices on every continent. The company faces major challenges when it comes to mobility,” according to Silvia Ciubotaru, global competence center manager. “In order to meet their needs, we set up a competence centerthat focuses exclusively on moves for this customer. When clients ask for a superflexible and exceptionally dedicated approach, we are always happy to satisfy this requirement, even if it means we have to reinvent and redraw part of our organization.”

In no time Setting up the competence center was actually quite similar to setting up a start-up. An empty office in Bucharest and a new contract was all Silvia had on April 6th. In a few weeks, she had recruited four people and trained them for the job. Silvia also authored the work procedures. On May 21, barely six weeks later, her team received their first order. Since then, the team has been coordinating a large part of the company’s international moves.

International client, international team Why was it necessary to set up an entirely new team? “This was purely due to the obligations set out in the contract,” Silvia explains. “These requirements dictate that the client expects a dedicated team that concentrates exclusively on their employees. The company applies a mo-

ving policy that demands a specific approach and supervision.”

The decision to start up a competence center in Bucharest was based primarily on strategic factors. “Bucharest is located smack-dab in the middle between East and West and has an internationally oriented business climate.

Our team consists of a Brit, a Russian, a Moldavian and a Romanian. Their diverse profiles and backgrounds come in handy every day, particularly because we are able to serve many clients in their native language,” Silvia says.

Enjoying the little things The family has now settled into a new routine. Daniel and Klara both work at the university and as a family, have found the peace and quiet they were sometimes lacking in recent years.

“We enjoy the little things here. Our first Halloween with the children

was really great. Colleagues come to our house now and then and we make something typically Belgian, like stoofvlees friet (stew with fries).

FROM BRUSSELS TO BANG EXPERTS in diplomatic moves When it comes to relocations for diplomats, Gosselin Mobility has a few dozen years of experience to fall back on. Luc Premereur, sales director for diplomatic services in Belgium, and move coordinators Jill Van de Weyer and Tonnie De Coninck tell us more.

Moving is in Luc Premereur’s blood, and he has been working in the moving sector since he was 18. “I first worked in operational positions such as dispatching,” Luc says. “After that, I moved to sales, and started handling commercial work for corporate and diplomatic customers. In the last ten years, my sole focus has been on diplomatic moves.”

“Diplomats are subject to a rotation of two, three or four years per assignment,

and move very often. This means that many of our customers are repeat customers. I recently spoke with someone I will be moving for the seventh time. This person has become like family to me.

WHEN MOVERS MOVE Gosselin employees who are also expats

Coincidence or not? Many of Gosselin’s employees also happen to be expats who have seen a considerable part of the world during their travels. An interview with Olivier Ravon and Rory Lautenbach about living, quality of life and finding happiness in France, Romania, South Africa and the UK. infrastructure projects popping up. Bucharest is one of the fastest changing cities in Europe.”

How long did it take for your new house to feel like a home?

“That happened pretty fast actually. The first two months, I lived in a furnished apartment. Once my own furniture and books arrived, it started to feel like home. I learned the language fairly quickly since it is a Romance language that is related to French.

Besides, most people in Bucharest speak English pretty well. Finally, people here are very open, and it’s easy to make friends.”

Olivier Ravon moved from France to Romania Olivier is group sales director at Gosselin.

“I was born and raised in the Bordeaux region in France,” he tells us. “I have moved a lot since my childhood. As a child, I lived in different cities in France such as Nice, Toulouse and Paris. I spent three years studying in London, and I have been living in Bucharest, the capital of Romania, since 2004.”

What is the biggest difference between Bordeaux and Bucharest?

“Bordeaux is a city with a population

of half a million people. Bucharest has two million residents, 15% of the total population of Romania. It wasn’t really all that long ago that Romania was ruled by the dictator Ceausescu. After he was deposed in 1990 and the country gained membership in the European Union, Romania has undergone an unusually rapid evolution. The economy is growing at 5 or 6% a year, and there are a lot of employment opportunities. Each time I walk through the city, I see new buildings and

What does quality of life mean to you?

“For me, quality of life means the right balance between what it costs to live somewhere and the quality that this environment offers. Bucharest offers everything I need in a city: culture, great bars and restaurants, concerts, freedom of speech and the love of books. Unlike what people might think, Bucharest is a very safe city. If my wife goes to the movies in the evening, I do not worry for a second.

This would probably not be the case in most European capitals.”

Rory Lautenbach moved from South Africa to the United Kingdom Rory is a move manager for DT Moving (a Gosselin Group company) in the United Kingdom and has moved more than 15 times in his life, primarily within the African continent. “I am South African and my wife is Scottish.

We arrived in London in 2006 with our daughter and six suitcases.”

What is the biggest difference between Cape Town and London?

“Cape Town is international in the sense that you will mostly find people there are from all over the African continent and some from Europe. London is however fully metropolitan with people from all over the world and an amazing experience. For me one of the biggest differences between the two cities are the job opportunities, these are relatively limited in Cape Town but seemed far more abundant in London.”

“Cape Town is a beautiful city with a pleasant climate and is the ideal vacation destination. The city does however have its share of serious crime and growing up in Cape Town meant that I spent much of my childhood living with burglar bars on windows and security gates on doors. Our daughter would never have been allowed to go to school alone on foot or by bike unlike here in London where children are often seen out in communities on bikes or on foot and it’s so nice to see.”

How long did it take for your new house to feel like a home?

“It took me less than a year to feel completely at home in London. I’m one of those people who likes to plan things far in advance, so I didn’t run into that

many obstacles during the moving process. The hardest part was securing a property, rents are high and one is usually expected to pay six to eight months of rent in advance which can be difficult. I also had to switch to a new brand of chutney, but apart from that, I didn’t have that many problems

(laughs). My colleagues at work gave me a warm welcome which definitely made the transition easier and smoother.”

“For my daughter the move came at a time when she was switching from junior school to high school, in a way this helped the transition but in another way was very hard for her as she lost many friends when she left South Africa and I think this made it especially hard for her. That said her school here was fantastic and she soon made new friends and settled in.”

What does quality of life mean to you?

“Quality of life means being happy! My family and I are really happy in London, this much is certain. There’s so much to experience and do here, there are excellent job opportunities for those who wish to improve themselves and also many opportunities to help others for those willing to give up some of their spare time for charities, fund raisers, etc. Feeling safe of course also contributes greatly to our quality of life here, the police force are excellent and we can walk down the street here without constantly having to worry, a very good feeling indeed.”

MILES APART, YET Your teams in France and Georgia

Gosselin Mobility is active in 34 countries, and this means just as many different cultures and stories. In this edition, we drink coffee in Paris and tea in Tbilisi to find out more. Even though the two offices are 3,500 kilometers apart as the crow flies, there is so much that connects them, such as great wine for example.

Can you describe your teams?

John Braeckeveldt: “Gosselin Mobility first set foot in Tbilisi fourteen years ago. What was once a vacant lot is now a complex with offices, warehouses and a fleet of trucks. We currently employ a staff of 25 people, including move coordinators, office staff, drivers and movers. In Tbilisi, most of our work is commissioned by government agencies and embassies. We also have a Logistics & Storage division that handles work for BP and Carrefour, among others. The moving division generates 60% of our sales, and the logistics division accounts for the remaining 40%.”

Christa Schwarz: “The history of our company dates back to 2002, and our

home base is located 16 kilometers to the west of Paris. The choice for this location was no coincidence. Not only do many expats live in this area, but there are also many international schools nearby. The majority of our sales comes from relocations and moves for companies. Among our most important clients are an international banking group

and a major retailer. Gosselin’s office in Paris is staffed by nine people and we also keep fifty packing employees busy on a daily basis. Each year we successfully complete 800 to 1,000 moves for our clients.”

How would you describe the atmosphere in your teams?

John: “The best way to classify our Tbilisi office is as a small- to medium-sized family business. With 25 employees, the business remains manageable; everybody knows each other quite well. The advantage of this homey atmosphere is that everyone is always willing to help one another. It’s a really fun and happy team...I should be careful about saying that too loudly though, otherwise they might send me back to the head office in Belgium (chuckles).”

Christa: “Our team is very young and we have a flat management hierarchy.

We are all too happy to roll up our sleeves for each other, regardless of the title on our business cards. The French describe the atmosphere here as ‘convivial’ which you could translate as friendly, human or empathetic. Our team is made up of people with a variety of backgrounds. I’m German and have been living in Paris for 40 years. These different points of view ensure we maintain a fresh outlook.”

What are you most proud of?

John: “Our team, without a doubt, and not only in Tbilisi, but all the Gosselin teams in the entire Caucasus region.

I trained the first employee fourteen years ago and since then I have person-

Christa: “The team of course. I think that our collective passion for this business forms a large part of our identity.

complete country with great summers, sea and mountains and a rich cultural and culinary heritage of course. France also has wine and was the winner of the World Cup, John (laughs). There is so much to see and (re-)discover. This is why France draws the highest number of tourists worldwide, year after year.

What are your personal mottos, on and off the work floor?

John: “Respect everyone; your clients, colleagues, friends, family and neighbors. Do this and you will automatically earn their respect in return. And of course try to enjoy your life and family as much as you can. Or as Abraham Lincoln once said, ‘In the end it's not the years in your life that count; it's the life in your years.’”

Christa: “As in love with France as I am, service is traditionally not the French people’s strongest suit. In spite of this, in 2002, we started a business model here that is based on service, friendliness and responsiveness. My motto is Yes we can!

Personally, I think it’s really important to enjoy life to the fullest. Fortunately, this trait is also in the French people’s DNA.”

Why are Tbilisi and Paris such attractive destinations for expats?

John: “Whether it’s Lonely Planet, Trip Advisor or CNN Travel, Georgia regularly appears on lists of must-see places.

And this is justified. Georgia has gorgeous natural beauty, and some areas even have a subtropical climate, complete with palm trees and hammocks.

These days, Georgia has much more in common with Europe than with Russia.

People speak English really well here, it’s safe and everything is relatively inexpensive. And - sorry Christa! - Georgia is the birthplace of wine, not France (laughs)!”

Christa: “On the whole, France is a fairly

Many people believe you either think it’s amazing or do not see the appeal at all. Parisians have the image of not being very hospitable. Expats often see the city as tough and challenging.

As a newcomer, it takes a while to feel you belong. However, once you’re ‘in the groove’ of Paris this city feels like a home it’s hard to say goodbye to.”

Do you have any tips for expats moving to France or Georgia?

John: “Easy: go without any pre-conceived notions and you will find that Georgia is basically an unspoiled paradise.”

Christa: “Don’t force yourself to like or dislike certain things about Paris. Just get out and explore. I would definitely recommend taking language lessons at a public school. Learning the language also helps you learn more about France’s character. One more thing: since many of the city’s residents go to the South of France in July and August, Paris is ideal GOSSELIN MOBILITY MAGAZINE

The past few months saw the development of a new supply chain for Gosselin Mobility’s worldwide goods flows by a project team headed by Laurent Giraud (see frame). “We are grouping our moving flows more intelligently. This allows us to offer faster, cheaper and more reliable shipping.”

Four hubs Laurent joined Gosselin as a Supply Chain Project Manager at the end of 2017. Following a thorough analysis of the moving goods flows, he drafted a new working

Economies of scale “One of the advantages to having our own dedicated transport grid is that we can respond very quickly and offer highly competitive prices. The possibilities are increasing exponentially to the volume that is shipped within the Gosselin network of companies. The greater the volume, the better the new supply chain works. We will soon launch a full-scale initiative to recruit new agents who want to become the co-authors of this win-win Who is story.”

We also started grouping our flows across four Gosselin hubs in Antwerp, Paris, London and Eschbach (Germany), between which dedicated transport is scheduled.”
