Hello !

My name is Anne and I am a third year architecture student, studying at Singapore Polytechnic.

I am an aspiring Architect that seeks to make a positive impact in people’s lives. I wish to give back to society by designing pleasant spaces for them to foster memories with their friends and family.

Outside of school, I regularly volunteer with East Youths, a youth volunteer organisation. I am also a member of the exco , where I assist in the organisation and planning of volunteering activities.

Additionally, I have been taking classical guitar lessons for 8 years.

01 CONTAINER HOUSE

To explore creating unique space planning strategies employed within modular container structures

Type : Residential | Location : Dover, Singapore | Software : AutoCAD, SketchUp Pro, Enscape & Photoshop | Year 1 Concept : After studying my user’s daily schedule, I realised his work, play and rest rituals are imbalanced, where he spends more time working, rather

than playing and resting. Hence, my design aims to create a space where my user is able to achieve the balance that he preaches about, through the use of Architectural strategies such as spatial intervention, and landscape elements to pull him towards the play and rest spaces.

My user’s unique ritual is gundam building. The spaces allocated for

gundam building is concentrated in one area that interrupts the route the user would take to the work space, visually distracting and reminding him to take a break.

Roof Plan

Trees, creepers and bushes are placed around the house to combat the direct sunlight entering the house. Moreover, overhangs are implemented to overcome the high-angled North-South sun.

cooling. Louvered windows covered by fins allow for natural ventilation, while blocking the sunlight from entering the space.

Due to the small space in the container modules, it is necessary to make the spaces multi-purpose and transformable, so that my user can live comfortably.

For example, the living room space can be expanded by opening up the flip up door, where my user can push out his sofa, transforming the yoga / exercise space into the living room space.

To redesign TWG Tea’s office such that it showcases the company’s ethos as well as demonstrate their commitment to sustainability

Lightwell

TWG Tea is a luxury brand that is sustainable environmentally, economically and socially. From our research, we realised that although they have a

diverse workplace, employees have trouble letting upper management staff know about their experiences due to communication breakdowns.

Hence, my group and I decided to design an open-concept office, that

matches TWG Tea’s ethos and commitment to sustainability, to encourage more communication and collaboration with one another.

Working with students from the Diploma in Interior Design, we designed

this office. As we designed, we thought of the user journey and how spatial planning can bring convenience for the users.

For example, the storage room where files and papers are stored, is on the 2nd storey, where the employees are working. This prevents them from

needing to walk up and down to find something, which may cause accidents when carrying

The solar panels are facing South and titled at a low angle, suitable with Singapore’s location, to generate the maximum amount of energy.

Roof openings allow for natural ventilation into the office, which is

important due to the character of shophouses where there are no windows on the sides.

Soundproof pods gives employees another option to work and take

online meetings in, providing a better work environment and privacy Breakout spaces allow employees to rest and bond with their colleagues.

The pantry faces the lightwell, which has water features and plants,

providing a relaxing space for employees to take their meals or breaks.

A recycling bin is also provided, encouraging the employees to recycle .

Private offices are another option for employees to attend to offline meetings with clients.

The open-concept workng space, where there are no

barriers to prevent communication. The employees and

bosses sit together, to encourage communication between them.

There is a space for employees to bond with one another after work.

The stairs lead to the mezzanine with features the private Working Space and Mezzanine

offices.

storing TWG Tea cans, welcoming clients and guests into the office.

Floor tiles that are similar to the ones found in the store can also be seen throughout the first storey.

Closed Cavity Facade (CCF) System Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), the Japan Tobacco

International Headquarters uses a CCF system which is a completely enclosed double-skin facade that adapts to external climatic

conditions while optimising daylight penetration and excellent vistas into workspaces.

The glazed panels are made up of an inner layer of triple glazing and an exterior layer of single glazing, with a fabric roller blind installed in

the cavity between. Their performance is balanced to guarantee ideal conditions in both the Summer and Winter.

On-site Facade Assembly The CCF system uses a unitised curtain wall. Each 4.3m x 3m

module is manufactured in a factory, making sure that the cavity remains clean throughout the construction process.

The panels are brought to site to be assembled and are hoisted

up on to the facade. The workers would fix each panel above one another, connecting them to the floor slab.

After installation, they would be plugged into a network of

moisture from the site.

Detailed Drawings The outer layer of the double skin facade consists of 10mm low iron float glass, coated with a solar coating called ipasol bright white. In the 500mm wide cavity, is a 2800mm wide horizontal grey fabric blinds. These blinds are motorised and offers a certain degree of transparency.

Each CCF module is divided by a diagonal mullion which places the outer glazing at different angles. One plane is tilted downwards to provide a moderate amount of shading for the area below. The other is rotated northwards to minimise solar gain. Read our full documentation and research here.

04 TREESTOP

To design a bus stop to improve the quality of life for people who commute every morning

Type : Transportation | Location : Singapore | Software : SketchUp Pro, Enscape, Lapentor and Premiere Pro | Year 3 Concept : Singapore’s present bus stops serve only as a place for commuters to wait for the bus and seek shelter. However, bus stops can be enhanced in terms of sustainability, functionality and aesthetics. TreeStop adopts a biomimicry approach, mimicking a tree and integrating itself into its surroundings.

This aims to provide a more pleasant and enjoyable experience for commuters, by integrating smart technology, sustainable materials and strategic spatial planning. Visit my Lapentor tour here.

Front Elevation (Night)

The plants minimise the amount of heat that radiates intot he space by absorbing ultraviolet rays. This mitigates the urban heat island effect, which is critical given Singapore’s dense urbanisation. It also improves the space’s air quality.

I proposed sustainable materials including bamboo, steel and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA).

Bamboo is a highly reneweable material since it grows exceptionally quickly and in high yields.

Steel is sustainable because it can be melted and reused endlessly for numberous uses without compromising quality.

PMMA plastic may also be melted and used to create new products, minimising the need for raw resources.

A tiny opening concealed within the group of bamboo columns can be connected to underground pipes and linked to water storage tanks. The water can be used to irrigate the plants at the bus stop as well as any other plants nearby.

Roof View (Day)

The bus stop features solar panels on the roof, tilted at a 3 degree angle, to accomodate to Singapore’s geographical location. The converted solar energy may then be used to power the interactive smart board, charging outlets at the bus stop, and nearby streetlamps.

To accommodate wheelchair users, a handicap spot has been provided for them, ensuring that they have a proper waiting space rather than obstructing the pathway and inconveniencing themselves and other commuters.

Street View (Day)

Smart technology, such as the interactive smart board, provides commuters with up-to-date information about bus schedules and weather, allowing them to be more prepared.

Charging outlets are also available for commuters to charge their electrical devices while waiting for the bus to arrive.

Wi-Fi connectivity has also been installed, allowing commuters to use free Wi-Fi while staying entertained on their phones.

05 ECOHAVEN

To design a 6-storey green School of Engineering that is able to prepare students for careers and challenges to meet tomorrow’s reality

Type : Educational Institution | Location : Dover, Singapore | Software : Revit, Twinmotion, Photoshop and Illustrator | Year 3 Concept : As technology evolves, collaborations and meetings between people starts shifting online as well. Although this brings about abundant

advantages, it brings disadvantages as well. This means students tend to connect with nature less often and, physical interactions and collaborations

are no longer as frequent. Therefore, I aimed to design a sustainable school that integrates nature and provides a relaxing, convenient and comfortable environment, to encourage students to have more physical collaborations.

The South-West facade receives little to no shading. Taking advantage of the situtation, I placed the algae modules on that facade, acting as a sunshading device and blocking the sun, while breeding the algae. The North-East facade receives shading during March and December solstice, using its own mass. This directed me to place corridors , where people spend less time in, on the South facade, and most classrooms facing North. transition zones between the blocks

Event Space

The event space is a space where collaboration

between industry partners and students can occur.

Students can present their ideas and projects with

others as well, so that students can learn from one another.

Breakout Space

The breakout space is a common space,

strategically placed between laboratories, staff

rooms and more. This provides convenience for all

parties, encouraging student-lecturer collaboration and sharing of ideas.

Rain Garden

The rain garden features various native plants such as the

Senna Surattenis and Caesalpinia Pulcherrima. This makes it easier to maintain. The garden assists in stormwater

management and energy conservation. The deep roots naturally filters and removes pollutants, sediments and

nutrients from the water. This process improves water quality, reducing the time required for water treatment.

The water also cools the environment, providing a relaxing spot for students to unwind.

Sky Terrace

The double volume sky terraces are decorated with lushes

bushes and trees, providing a comfortable environment for students to rest and relax, while enjoying the breeze.

The spacious sky terrace provides a space for students to

exercise or do yoga, encouraging students to connect with nature and achieve a work-life balance.

Algae Facade

As part of the Technical Research module, I was tasked to

design the educational institution with an algae curtain wall

facade. Before designing, my group and I carried out our own research, before settling on this concaved algae module.

The algae facade is a sustainable feature as firstly, it grows

rapidly, making it an easily replenishable source. Secondly, it can be used to produce electricity. Lastly, the access algae can be sold to pharmaceutical companies for its health benefits.

My module contains of an aluminium frame and 2 pieces of laminated glass, that must be sealed tightly for the algae water to sit between the 2 pieces of glass.

We settled on a concaved shape as

according to our research, this shape allows the algae to receive moderate

amounts of sunlight. This is important as

excessive amounts of sunlight can cause the algae to deteriorate.

Additionally, with the concaved shape, the algae grows best in the East-West

06 OTHERS

Module : Artificial Intelligence in the Built Environment To develop and train machine learning models to solve problems with emphasis on applications in the built environment.

Software : Google Colab and Google Document | Year 2

For the first project, we were tasked to train our model to predict profits using only one variable, the population in a city. We also trained another to predict the prices of housing using multiple variables such as location, number of bedrooms and more. Read our full report and documentation here.

For the second project, we trained our model to classify images into 10 fashion categories using image classification. Using the same method, we also trained another to detect pictures of cats and dogs as well as cracks and non-cracks on walls. Read our full report and documentation here.

Module : Technical Studies I To research on Prefabricated Prefinished Volumetric Construction (PPVC) modules and how they are constructed

PPVC modules are used to build Singapore’s Housing Development Board (HDB) developments. The benefits of PPVC modules are firstly, construction time is minimised and can improve productivity by up to 40% in terms of manpower and time savings, depending on the complexity of the projects. It also provides a better construction environment as the PPVC modules are built off-site, improving the safety of the site. Lastly, fabricating in a controlled factory environment can produce higher quality products. All these factors allow HDB units to be more affordable and allow residents to move into their new house at a sonner date.
