Mayor’s Welcome Dear Goshen Parks Patron, I have been enjoying Goshen’s parks since I was growing up. It is so exciting to see how our Parks & Recreation Department has expanded in both number of parks and number of programs. I have come to the point in my life where I am especially enjoying watching my children utilize the fantastic parks and more that I grew up with in Goshen. Superintendent Tanya Heyde and staff are working hard at expanding and maintaining our parks throughout this community.

You are undoubtedly aware of the serious flooding in Goshen in February. The combination of heavy snowmelt and torrential rains resulted in unprecedented flooding in the Maple City. Particularly hard hit were many of our parks, as often they are situated at lower elevations. Please be patient as the Goshen Park staff and other City employees work diligently in the coming weeks and months to repair the damage and restore our parks to the condition they were in prior to the flooding. Thank you for your understanding.

This is all part of the continuing effort to enhance our community’s quality of life. Please come out and experience your parks this spring and summer. You will quickly realize why my family loves them, and you will learn just one of the many reasons why I am proud to call Goshen home.

From the Superintendent’s Desk Dear Goshen Resident, I am pleased to invite you to explore the 2018 Spring & Summer Goshen Parks & Recreation Program Guide—again in both English and Spanish. The park staff and I are eager to offer an impressive lineup of fun, enriching and quality-of-life experiences for all ages.

Soon the warmer temperatures of spring and summer will be upon us. Trees, flowers and wildlife are awakening in nature all around us, including evident growth and beauty in Goshen’s 21 parks and 30 miles of bike and pedestrian trails. All of these areas are becoming alive with visitors and exciting outdoor activities.

Whether you participate in our trail system, canoeing or kayaking, adult and youth sports, our fitness classes, the Try-Athlon for kids and teens, the Rock the Quarry triathlon for adults, as well as many other activities … the Goshen park system is here for you and it’s about you. The Park Department strives to meet the needs and desires of the community, and we welcome your thoughts and ideas. Each resident of Goshen is important to our staff.

As spring and summer approach, please be patient with our staff as they continue to work diligently on restoring the parks due to the recent flooding. Although it may take some time to restore the parks, we are looking forward to another amazing season.

The February flood event significantly damaged our main office (607 West Plymouth Avenue) just west of the Elkhart River and Shanklin Park. For the foreseeable future our main office has now moved “across the street” to 410 West Plymouth Avenue: the Rieth Interpretive Center. Our phone number is still 574-534-2901. And hours for our newly relocated office are still 7 am to 4 pm, Monday through Friday. As noted on page 4, Rieth Interpretive Center hours continue to be 10 am to 4 pm, Tuesday through Thursday.

We take great pride in offering quality programs and maintaining the best parks, facilities and programs possible. It is our privilege to continue to serve the citizens of this wonderful community, and we hope visitors to the Maple City take a few moments to see how these resources can enrich their lives too.

Splash Parks Walnut Park Splash Pad, on Goshen’s north side at East Oakridge Avenue between 5th and 6th streets, and Rieth Park Splash Pad, on Goshen’s south side on 13th Street between Iowa and Illinois streets, will function daily May 28 to August 31 from 12 noon to 8 pm (weather permitting).

Dedication Program Are you interested in making a positive contribution to the Goshen parks that would be appreciated by many people for generations to come? Donations and dedications of trees, plants, flowers, park benches and picnic tables are all welcomed for the Goshen parks. Goshen Park Department staff provides planting and perpetual care or replacement of plants. Fees cover the cost of the contribution and plaques.

Rieth Interpretive Center residents care for the “urban forest.”

1. The City will split the cost of tree maintenance, including trimming and removal, 50/50, for trees that are in the City’s right of way. The city forester can help determine right of way.

2. The City will split the cost of planting a new, 2-inch diameter, 10- to 15-foot-tall tree if planted in the right of way. Resident portion is $80, which includes planting.

Volunteer Opportunities and Support

Aaron for information about Goshen’s 50/50 Tree Maintenance and Planting Programs, Bird Walks, Nature Hikes, School Programs, Group Programs or other activities and events at Rieth.

Goshen Parks Forestry: Trees are a vital part of Goshen’s life and infrastructure. Trees provide everyone with some invaluable services—and they do these services more cheaply and efficiently than human designs. People need trees!

The City of Goshen has two tree programs, which it offers through the Goshen Parks & Recreation Department, to help

In addition, there are various volunteer opportunities in the public woods of Goshen. Invasive plant species removal, trail maintenance, tree planting and trash cleanup are some of the major ongoing projects within Goshen’s urban forest. The Municipal Tree Nursery is one of the sites for volunteer work.

While there is sweat involved in all these efforts, there is also a lot of fun, and especially the opportunity to be outside, learning about the wide world of trees! Contact the forester at 537-0986 to arrange volunteer projects.

Shanklin Pool Whether your summer fun includes water slides, diving boards, lap swims, open swims, swim lessons, pool parties or just sunbathing, Shanklin Pool is your summer hot spot! Our concession stand is open during public swim hours with a full menu.

The pool is open daily May 26–August 5, Saturdays and Sundays through August 26.

Opening and closing dates are weather-dependent.

Shanklin Pool Special Events College Student Thrifty Thursdays You won’t need a loan for this! Enjoy some fun in the sun. Each Thursday, college students with a college photo ID will be admitted all day at the twilight rate of $2.

Grandparents’ Summer Sittin’ Tuesdays Baby-sitting? Spend a day at the pool.

Each Tuesday, grandparents receive free admission when accompanied by children 3 years and older. Regular fees apply for grandchildren.

Teen Scene Mondays Mondays aren’t dreary when it’s summer!

Each Monday, teens are admitted all day at the evening rate of $2. Bring your school ID and your friends—and celebrate summer Mondays.

Daddy’s Day Dip Sunday, June 17. Kids, bring your dad to Shanklin for his Father’s Day gift. Picnic in the park or “dine” at Shanklin’s concession stand.

Water Aerobics Red Cross-Certified Beginner to Advanced Swim Lessons

Swim lessons are offered under the instruction of certified instructors and their assistants. Classes follow the American Red Cross standards, focusing on levels of water exploration, primary skills, stroke readiness and stroke development. Class space is limited, so please register early to ensure availability.

Adult lessons and specific stroke training are available upon request; call 533-7616. Beginner lessons are for ages 5+ and are $55 per session.

Red Cross-Certified Parent and Child Swim Lessons

Our skilled instructors provide a fun learning environment for toddlers while they explore the pool. Swim diapers are required and may be purchased at the pool. During Class A, a parent will accompany the child in the water. During Class B, a parent will accompany 3-year-old children for the first few classes to assist in transition. Cost is $55 per session.

This water exercise class has something for everyone and is suitable for all fitness levels. The class includes a morning stretch, thermal warm-up aerobic training as well as strength, core training, flexibility and balance. Because the water creates more resistance than land, this workout is efficient and easy on the joints, and participants get a great workout without sweating. Various water levels are used to create variety and to alleviate the need to swim. Your instructor has 25 years of experience and is trained by the Aquatic Exercise Association, an internationally acclaimed organization with the highest of standards. She believes that exercise and fitness are crucial to each individual’s physical, psychological and emotional health.

You may register at the Goshen Park Office or at class with your instructor, but please call ahead to ensure class is meeting at the regularly scheduled time. Register for the entire summer session for $80, or take advantage of dropping in anytime throughout the session and pay our drop-in rate of $6 per class. For group rates, call Kimberlee at 534-2901.

Dance Programs Dance attire varies by instructor and by the different forms of dance. At registration, please request a copy of the dance attire requirements for your class.

Dancers must be the minimum required age by August 1 of the session year. Pre-registration is required at the Park Office. Instructors will assist in class placement; please contact the Parks Office for details.

Classes meet at our downtown studio at 216 South Main Street. Since class size is limited and your child will be taking a place in class upon registration, refunds will not be issued after class capacity is met or registration closes, whichever occurs first.

Session I: 2018 • Priority registration for returning dancers begins July 9, and open registration begins July 23. Registration deadline is August 10.

• Session I classes begin August 20. Classes meet for 12 weeks. Classes will not meet September 3 or October 22–26.

• All classes have limited enrollment; please register early to ensure availability.

Session II: 2019 • Priority registration for returning dancers begins November 5, and open registration begins November 19. Registration deadline is December 21.

• This exciting session prepares dancers for the Spring Concert on stage in May. In addition to class instruction, dancers will learn choreography and be involved in costume fittings for the performance. This process requires commitment from dancers for a 14- to 17-week session.

• A spring concert dance costume, chosen by instructors, will need to be purchased for this session, not to exceed $50.

• Session II begins the week of January 7 and goes through May 4. Monday classes will not meet January 21, February 18 or April 1, Wednesday classes will not meet April 3 and Thursday classes will not meet April 4. Monday classes meet for 14 weeks, Wednesday classes meet for 16 weeks, and Thursday classes meet for 16 weeks.

• All class sizes have limited enrollment, so please register early to ensure availability.

Creative Dance

This is a class for children who are age 3 by August 1, as well as younger 4-year-olds. Class will focus on creative dance movement, including learning to follow rhythm, mirroring technique and improvisation.

Dance Sampler

A class for students ages 4 and 5. It will cover dance warmups, stretching and beginning technique for Jazz, Ballet and Modern. This class is great for children who are aspiring gymnasts, budding ballerinas or for those who simply love to move with music.

Modern/Ballet

Students ages 5–7 will learn age-adjusted ballet and modern dance technique. Your child will learn proper body alignment and develop flexibility, coordination and grace. Your child will also experience applying their own movement thoughts to the art of improvisation.

Classes will facilitate the joy of dance and appreciation for beauty, as well as build well-balanced, healthy respect and discipline. The difficulty level will increase with Beginning Modern II and Intermediate Modern.

Modern/Ballet for Children with Special Needs This class will contain the same elements as Modern/Ballet.

Students will learn the vocabulary of modern and ballet with sensitivity to dancers’ needs. Class will evolve according to the progression of the class. Please speak with instructor regarding enrollment.

Discovery Day Camp Discovery Day Camp is a fun and exciting summertime camp for children ages 5–12.

The camp begins May 29 and will be staffed through July 27 (or according to the Goshen Community Schools calendar). Camp opens at 7 am and closes at 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday. This is a full-time summer camp; just one week of vacation is allowed to each camper. Each of the nine weeks of camp has its own theme, during which campers participate in games, activities and off-campus field trips related to that week’s theme.

All Discovery Day Campers enjoy the Shanklin Pool on a regular basis. The schedule also incorporates some of the Park Department’s summer activities into Discovery Day Camp, including Soccer Camp, Art Camp and the Kids’ & Teens’ Try-Athlon. All summer activities are designed for the introductory level and introduce campers to new activities or expand their existing interests, all the while experiencing new life skills.

This is a recreational league that provides the area’s young people the opportunity to learn and enjoy the sport of soccer. Our program emphasizes good health, exercise and friendly competition. We promote the development of soccer skills, an understanding of the game and the enjoyment that comes from playing the world’s most popular sport—soccer. Soccer Camp

This motivating four-day camp focuses on teaching soccer fundamentals, purpose, body balance, safety, directional movements, heading, goalie positioning, ball handling and sportsmanship. Our experienced instructors keep the ball rolling with this engaging program for boys and girls ages 4–9.

Champion Force Cheerleading

Participants gain a sense of team spirit, improved self-esteem and readiness for high school cheer squad tryouts. In our program, we teach cheerleading and pompom techniques, jumps, stunts, cheers, chants, dance steps and voice projection.

Coaches choreograph a competition routine, which all students learn and practice throughout the session in preparation for our Cheer Competition. Champion Force is a non-profit youth outreach program. Champion Force is open to boys and girls ages 4–18. Class meets at Schrock Pavilion in Shanklin Park.

Youth Flag Football

This co-ed program provides young players a fun and exciting opportunity to engage in non-contact, continuous action. The league is designed for experience and development in all aspects of football. Learn individual, sport-oriented skills, but also develop personally and socially, learning teamwork and building character and life skills through sports. This is a great introductory to JFL, and participants will learn many of the same plays. Registration is currently being accepted at the Goshen Parks Office through August 3 (or until full). League will begin the week of August 13. All of our coaches are volunteers; they are the backbone of our program. The perfect seven-week introduction to dance for new students, as well as a great refresher course for returning dancers!

Brushes and Brownies: Create Your Own Canvas Art! Join us on Saturday, May 12, 1–3 pm at Rieth Interpretive Center for an afternoon of fun, family and art. Your family “pair” will collaborate to complete a masterpiece for you to display in your home or give as a gift. The family pair consists of one parent/adult, and one child (age 4–7 years). The class will consist of step-by-step instruction and guidance from our artist for you to complete a masterpiece to take home. All supplies to complete your artwork will be provided with the exception of a smock or apron. And, of course, brownies will be served.

Pre-registration is required and is being accepted at the Goshen Parks & Recreation Office through May 11. Cost for the class is $40 per pair.

Art Camp

This stimulating art study course is taught utilizing various art materials, as well as incorporating the study of nature. The class instructor will capture campers’ interest, guiding both their aspirations and inspirations!

I Dig Dinosaurs During these “digs” the junior paleontologists will experience the wonder of excavating fossils, piecing them together and learning about the mysteries of our living past.

Youth Programs Little Monets, Ages 5–8

Have your children ever painted with their toes, looked for shapes in the clouds, or made their own play-dough? We often want our children to grow up so quickly that we forget to encourage them to keep their imagination strong and alive. Around ages 5–6 is when we really begin to see children’s art become more realistic, so this makes it the ideal time to encourage them with new skills around art and their creativity. In this four-week course, your child will draw and paint successfully with the right mix of individualized instruction, encouragement and motivation. We always expect the children to clean up their “creative area” after they’re done; sometimes this takes a bit of time at the end of class. Our hope is that your child will leave each session saying, “Mommy, I saw a dolphin in the clouds,” or “Daddy, it’s OK if I only draw a circle, as long as I make it the best circle ever!” Class will meet at Rieth Interpretive Center Thursdays April 19 and 26 and May 3 and 10.

Pirate Experience Camp

Arrrr! Who wants to become a pirate? Come for a fun week of pirate adventures! Experience the world of pirates through stories, games and take-home crafts. Pirates will get a (temporary) tattoo, learn to read a treasure map, assemble an eyepatch and swashbuckling (foam) sword, walk the plank and more. All materials provided; kids just need to bring their curiosity! Class meets at Rieth Interpretive Center, 410 West Plymouth Avenue.

I Try Sailing

This nautical program is a free introductory sailing clinic for youths ages 8–15. Come see what it takes to sail and discover a new interest! This is a great introduction to our Sailing Camp being offered June 18–22. The I Try Sailing clinic will meet at Fidler Pond Park, 1424 Lincolnway East, on Saturday, June 9 from 11 am to 2 pm. Sailing Camp

This camp is focused on introducing youths ages 8–15 to the sport of sailing. The camp teaches a new skill base consisting of nautical terminology, parts of a sailboat, knot tying and teamwork.

Princess Experience Camp

Would you like to be a princess? Well m’lady, join this class and be transformed! Enjoy learning about princesses by listening to stories, playing games and making princess crafts. Decorate your own crown, make a sparkly necklace, dance and swirl in your tutu (all materials provided)! Practice tea party etiquette and walking with poise. Youth & Adult Programs Pickleball

What is pickleball?! It is a sweet sport with a sour name, a craze that is sweeping the nation. It combines many elements of tennis, badminton and Ping-pong. The game is played both indoors and outdoors on a badminton-size court, with a slightly modified tennis net, paddles and a plastic ball.

I Try Scuba

Ever wonder what it’s like to take a breath underwater? Or what it’s like to be a fish? Find out at Shanklin Pool on Saturday, June 2 and July 7 from 8 to 10 am.

Join dive instructor Greg Stone and other master divers who will be on hand to let you experience the underwater world. All equipment will be provided. Bring your swimsuit and towel, and be ready to get wet. This one-day introduction to scuba (which stands for self-contained underwater breathing apparatus) is just $5! Pre-registration is required at the Goshen Parks & Recreation Office by Wednesday, June 13 and July 11. For ages 10 to adult.

Outdoor pickleball courts are located at Model Elementary School, 412 South Greene Road in Goshen (open seasonally). Equipment rental is available at the Goshen Parks & Recreation Department, $5/two paddles and a ball. Rules and procedures will be provided. Scuba Classes

Learn the fundamentals of scuba diving, including equipment selection, how water pressure affects you when diving, planning your dives and safety. Upon completing the two-day course— or when a level of proficiency is achieved—participants will schedule four open-water dives with the instructor. Divers ages 15 and older who complete the course and open-water dives will earn PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) Open Water Diver certification. Individuals ages 10–14 are eligible to achieve Junior Open Water certification.

Equipment will be provided except for mask, snorkel, fins and boots. These may be rented ($50)—or you may bring your own.

Pre-registration is required at the Goshen Parks & Recreation Office. Class fee is $300, which includes the two-day course, textbook, four open-water dives and additional instruction to achieve certification, if needed.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu This introductory session will give participants a basic understanding of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu history, theory and techniques. Classes will include a warm-up, stretching and technical instruction. Self-defense techniques and movement drills, without striking, will also be taught. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is unique in relation to most other self-defense systems as it focuses on use of leverage and proper technique, taking the attacker to the ground and defusing the situation by use of joint locks and holds. Yoga on the Millrace

This inviting class is an all-levels, one-hour yoga practice designed to create fluidity, flexibility and strength. Enjoy a yoga practice outdoors with the sounds of nature, fresh air and watch the morning sunrise with a whole new perspective. These classes take place on a brick paver patio at the north end of the millrace, next to the Millrace Power Station and John Mishler’s Dream Chaser sculpture. The patio is directly west of the Farmer’s Market and south of the Interra Credit Union parking lot.

Beginning Fly Fishing

Learn when and why fly fishing is the right tool for the task. Gain an understanding of what weight fly rod and fly line to use for various types of fishing. Learn a little bit about leaders and tippet, as well as line and fly types, fly tying, basic knots, bugs, and fly fishing safety and etiquette.

Instruction will include basic casting techniques and the five casting principles that will help you become more proficient in handling different casting situations. Fly casting is not difficult, but it does use different motions than other types of fishing.

14th Annual Kids'

& Teens' Try-Athlon

Saturday, July 14, 2018 Shanklin Park, 411 West Plymouth Avenue This exhilarating event is offered to anyone ages 5–18 wishing to take part. While our largest group of participants is from the Goshen area, the 2017 Try-Athlon attracted approximately 300+ representing two dozen different cities! With families, friends and spectators, this event draws more than 600 people to Shanklin Park on the day of the Try-Athlon. Our event is conducted much like a traditional triathlon; competitors begin with the swimming competition, then move right along to the bike route and finish with the run portion of the race. All participants compete in all three portions of the race consecutively. Racers compete with those in their swimming status group, gender group and age group. This is a professionally chip-timed race.

While some of the participants are competitive in nature, our emphasis is primarily on the accomplishment of finishing the race. All racers receive a participation medal upon crossing the finish line as an award for their achievement, and the top three finishers of each girls and boys age divisions are awarded a trophy. Parents are invited to participate with their children during the run portion of the race to show their support and to be actively involved in their children’s steps toward healthy lifestyles.

Youth racers will swim 25 meters (one length of Shanklin Pool), bike 1.2 miles and run ½ mile. Teens ages 13–18 will swim for 75 meters (three lengths of Shanklin Pool), bike 1.2 miles and run 3.1 miles (5K). Each participant completes all three portions of the race, consecutively, with one final race result.

Packet pickup and mandatory bicycle and helmet safety inspections will be conducted Wednesday, July 11 at Rieth Interpretive Center, 410 West Plymouth Avenue, from 12 noon to 6 pm. You must bring your bikes and helmets to receive a “passing” sticker for each. Out-of-town participants who live outside a 50-mile radius of Goshen should contact Kim at 534-2901 regarding packet pickup and safety inspections.

Sprint Triathlon and Mile Swim Event Saturday, August 18, 2018 Fidler Pond Park, 1424 Lincolnway East, Goshen Attention, triathletes and swimmers: You definitely want to put this one on your calendar!

A premier event in Goshen that draws athletes from our community and beyond. Our inaugural event in 2015 attracted 227 participants who represented 64 cities and 8 states! This is a special-destination triathlon event!

Sprint Triathlon

This competitive but shorter sprint-distance race is great for both veteran and novice athletes.

500-Yard Swim: If you are comfortable swimming in open water, you will absolutely love this rare opportunity to swim in a quarry nestled in a picturesque setting. The course is a triangular counter-clockwise course beginning and ending at the same point.

15.8-Mile Bike: This is a flat, out-and-back course with both right and left turns. The first section extends through an industrial park and then into the country to Millersburg and back.

5K Run: This course is two laps (3.1 miles) on the flat aggregate track that encircles Fidler Pond. While on the course runners are able to see the rest of the field, and there are plenty of great spots for spectators to cheer.

If you like to swim in open water, you will love this opportunity to swim in a pristine quarry. The deep, clean, clear water makes for quite the swim experience. The Mile Swim Event will be set up in a rectangular, counter-clockwise course. Swimmers will be chip-timed, and timing will end upon crossing a timing mat placed on land at water’s edge of the swim exit.

Friday, August 17 from 4 to 7 pm and Saturday, August 18 from 6 to 7:30 am at the race site, Chiddister Pavilion in Fidler Pond Park. Since this venue is so unique, we strongly encourage participants to come to packet pickup on Friday to see the lay of land and to get your bearings. It will help you greatly to see the layout a day before race day!

This is a USAT-sanctioned triathlon. Upon registration each participant must either provide a current USAT membership or purchase a one-day license. Mile swimmers are not required to have or obtain a USAT license. Must be 13 years of age to participate.

Elkhart River Canoe Trip and Fidler Pond Boat Rentals

Take a canoe trip on the Elkhart River or enjoy Fidler Pond with a canoe, kayak or pedal boat. Lifejackets are provided for ages 4 and up (not recommended for children ages 3 and under). An adult must accompany children ages 8 and younger in the boat.

19th Annual Pumpkinvine Bike Ride Friends of the Pumpkinvine and the Goshen Park Department are sponsoring the 19th Annual Pumpkinvine Bike Ride on Saturday, June 16. Friends of the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail, Inc., are cyclists, hikers, equestrians and naturalists who are working with area park departments to create a linear park and greenway on the former Pumpkinvine railroad corridor connecting Goshen, Middlebury and Shipshewana. Free Family Activities, Events & Programs for All Ages Free Summer Lunch Program

Tyler S. Joldersma Skate Park

Free lunch is served throughout the summer to those 18 years of age and under at the park locations below. Lunch is provided as a partnership between the Goshen Community School Corporation’s Food Service and USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture). Please call 533-8631 for further information, including additional serving sites. The Summer Lunch Program will be operated Monday to Friday during summer break (serving sites are not open on Monday, June 4 and end Friday, July 27). Times and locations subject to change, so call to confirm before visiting.

Visit the skate park this season to check out the Rhino equipment. Rhinolene® (polypropylene) surfaced, quarter pipe, half pipe, street pipe, handrail box, grind rail and more! The park is located near the corner of Chicago and Lincoln avenues, adjacent to Rogers Park. The facility promotes the sports of inline skating, roller skating and skate boarding (no bikes, please).

When using the skate park, please follow the rules posted. Remember, be courteous, pick up trash and respect the ramps; this is your park!

The skate park is open daily from dawn until dusk while weather permits. No entry fee. Skate at your own risk.

The Maple City Greenway consists of a network of various bicycle and pedestrian trails throughout Goshen that link homes, parks, schools, the library and the downtown area. Eleven of these trails are described below and at right.

• Abshire Park Trail, a crushed stone surface, 10 feet wide, connects Pumpkinvine Nature Trail along Rock Run Creek to Monroe Street. Distance: 1½ miles • Central City Trail is a brick-edged sidewalk linking Goshen College, Goshen Public Library, Goshen High School, Elkhart County Courthouse and the downtown area.

Distance: 2 miles • Fidler Pond Walking/Biking Track, a crushed-stone surface, 8 feet wide, is a walking and biking track that follows the perimeter of Fidler Pond. El Campamento Día del Descubrimiento es un campamento de verano divertido y emocionante, para niños de 5 a 12 años de edad. Comienza el 29 de mayo y prestará servicio hasta el 27 de julio (o conforme al calendario escolar de Goshen Community Schools). El campamento abrirá a las 7 am y cerrará a las 5:30 pm, de lunes a viernes. Esta es una actividad de verano de tiempo completo, solo se le permite una semana de vacaciones a cada participante.

Cada una de las 9 semanas del campamento tiene su propio tema, y los campistas participarán en juegos, actividades y paseos cercanos relacionados con el tema de cada semana.

Programas de Danza para Jóvenes El atuendo de danza varía según el instructor y el estilo de danza. Al inscribirse, por favor solicite una copia de los requisitos de vestuario para su clase. Los participantes deben tener la edad mínima requerida para el primero de agosto del año en sesión. Sesión II: 2019 • El registro prioritario para los bailarines que regresan inicia el 5 de noviembre, y las inscripciones abiertas comienzan el 19 de noviembre. La fecha límite de inscripción es el 21 de diciembre.

• Esta excitante sesión prepara a las bailarinas para el Concierto de Primavera en el escenario, en el mes de mayo. Las bailarinas aprenderán coreografía y estarán usando su vestuario para la presentación. Este proceso requiere que los bailarines se comprometan a una sesión de 14–17 semanas.

• Un concierto de primavera traje de la danza tendrán que ser comprados para esta sesión, que no exceda de $50.

• Sesión II comienza la semana del 7 de enero y termina 4 de mayo. Las clases de los lunes no se reunirán el 21 de enero, el 18 de febrero, 1 de abril. Las clases de los jueves no se reunirán 3,4 de abril. Moderna/Ballet

Esta clase es para estudiantes edades de 5–7. Clase combinará la técnica del ballet clásico y moderno. Su hijo aprenderá la alineación adecuada del cuerpo y desarrollará flexibilidad, coordinación y gracia. Las clases generarán el gozo de la danza, la apreciación estética, así como fortalecerán un respeto y disciplina bien equilibrado y saludable. El nivel de dificultad aumentará con Moderna para Principiantes II y Moderna para Intermedios.

Moderna/Ballet (para niños con necesidades especiales)

Esta clase contiene los mismos elementos que la Moderna/ Ballet. Los alumnos aprenderán el vocabulario de la danza moderna y el ballet, con especial sensibilidad a las necesidades del bailarín. La clase evolucionará con respecto al progreso.

Danza Creativa

Esta es una clase para los niños que son 3 años de edad el 1 de agosto y hasta de 4 años. La clase se centrará en el movimiento de la danza creativa, incluyendo aprender a seguir el ritmo, la técnica de replicación y la improvisación.

Muestra de Danza

Una clase para los estudiantes entre las edades de 4 y 5 años de edad. Triatlón para Niños y Jóvenes 14 de julio • Shanklin Park, 411 West Plymouth Avenue Este evento vigorizante se ofrece para personas de 5 a 18 años que quieran participar. ¡Mientras que el mayor número de participantes es del area de Goshen, el Triatlón 2017 atrajo aproximadamente a 300 participantes representando 24 ciudades diferentes! Contando familiares, amigos y espectadores, este evento atrae a más de 600 personas a Shanklin Park el día del Triatlón. Nuestro evento se conduce mucho como un triatlón tradicional, los participantes comienzan con una competencia de natación, luego paran a la ruta de bicicletas y terminan corriendo una porción de la carrera. Todos los participantes compiten en las tres porciones de la carrera consecutivamente. En esta carrera se toma el tiempo de manera profesional.

Mientras que algunos de los participantes son competitivos por naturaleza, nuestro énfasis es primordialmente el logro de terminar la carrera. Todos los niños y jóvenes reciben una medalla por participar en cuanto cruzan la meta, como premio por su logro, y los primeros tres niños y niñas de cada grupo de edad reciben un trofeo. Se invita a los padres a participar con sus hijos durante la porción de atletismo de la carrera, para demostrarles su apoyo y para tomar pasos activos en el estilo de vida saludable de sus hijos.

Los niños pre-adolescentes nadarán 25 metros (un largo de la piscina de Shanklin), montarán 1.2 millas en bicicleta y correrán media milla. Los adolescentes de 13 a 18 años nadarán 75 metros (tres largos de la piscina de Shanklin), montarán 1.2 millas en bicicleta y correrán 3.1 millas (5Km). Cada participante compite en las tres porciones de la carrera, consecutivamente, con un resultado final.

La expedición de paquetes e inspección obligatoria de bicicletas y cascos será el 11 de julio en Rieth Interpretive Center, 410 West Plymouth Avenue, de las 12 mediodía a las 6 pm. Programas para Ninos, Adultos y Familias Jiu Jitsu Brasileño

Intento de Buceo por Primera Vez

Para cualquiera de 10 años en adelante ¿Alguna vez se ha preguntado cómo sería respirar bajo el agua? ¿O cómo sería ser un pez? Averígüelo en la Piscina Shanklin el sábado, 2 de junio y 7 de julio de 8 a 10 de la mañana. Acompañe al instructor de buceo Greg Stoner y otros buzos expertos que estarán a la mano para que usted experimente con el mundo bajo el agua. Se proporcionará todo el equipo, solo lleve su traje de baño, una toalla y esté preparado para mojarse. Clases de Buceo

Aprenda los fundamento del buceo, incluyendo la selección del equipo, como le afecta la presión del agua al bucear, planear sus buceos y seguridad. Después de terminar un curso de dos días, o cuando se logre un nivel de aptitud, los participantes programarán cuatro sesiones de buceo a agua abierta con el instructor. Los buzos de 15 años en adelante que terminen el curso y las salidas a agua abierta obtendrán una certificación PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) para Buceo a Aguas Abiertas. Las personas de 10 a 14 años pueden obtener una certificación Junior Open Water.

Se proporcionará el equipo, excepto máscara, tubo de buceo, aletas y botas. Estas se pueden rentar ($50) o usted puede llevar las suyas. Se requiere una pre-inscripción en la oficina de Goshen Parks & Recreation. Yo Intento Navegación

Este programa náutico es una introduction gratis para jóvenes entre las edades 8–15. ¡Ven a ver lo que se necesita para navegar y descubrir un nuevo interés! Esta es una gran sesión de introducción a nuestro campamento de vela ofrecido de junio de 18–22. La clínica se reunirá en Fidler Pond Park, 1424 Lincolnway East, sábado, 9 de junio de, 11 am–2 pm. Campamento de Navegación

Este campamento se centra en la introducción de jóvenes entre las edades 8–15 en el deporte de la navegación. Triatlón Sprint y Milla de Natación Sábado, 18 de agosto, 2018 En Fidler Pond Park, 1424 Lincolnway East, Goshen Un evento de estreno en Goshen que atrae a los atletas de nuestra comunidad y más allá. Nuestro evento inaugural en 2015 atrajo a 227 participantes que representaban a 64 ciudades y 8 estados!

Este es el destino de un evento especial triatlón!

Triatlón Sprint

Esta carrera de distancia sprint competitivo pero más corto es ideal para atletas veteranos y novatos.

500 yardas de natación: Si se siente cómodo nadando en aguas abiertas le encantará esta rara oportunidad de nadar en una cantera situada en un pintoresco entorno. El curso es un sentido contrario triangular comenzando y terminando en el mismo punto.

15.8 millas en bicicleta: Se trata de un piso, de ida y vuelta de golf con dos giros a la derecha e izquierda. La primera sección se extiende a través de un parque industrial y luego en el campo hasta Millersburg y de regreso.

5K: Este curso es de dos vueltas (3.1 millas) de la pista plana agregada que rodea Fidler Pond. Mientras que en el curso de los corredores son capaces de ver el resto del campo y hay un montón de grandes lugares para los espectadores los animen.

Evento de Milla de Natación

Recogida de paquetes: Viernes, 17 de agosto de 4 a 7 pm y el sábado, 19 de agosto 6–7:30 am en el lugar de la carrera, Chiddister Pabellón en Fidler Pond Park. Programas para Adultos Baile de Salón (para adultos)

Pickleball!

¿Cuál es pickleball?! Es un deporte dulce con un nombre amargo, una moda que está barriendo la nación. Es un deporte divertido que combina muchos elementos de tenis, bádminton y Ping-pong.

El juego se juega en el interior y al aire libre en una cancha de tamaño de bádminton y una red de tenis ligeramente modificada con raquetas y una bola de plástico. Yoga en Millrace

Registration Procedures/ Procedimientos de Registro Registration for recreation programs, activities and rentals will be taken only in person at the park office or designated location. Registration will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

In all cases, registration fees must be paid in advanced of the start of the program at the time of registration. Program dates, times, and locations listed in this program guide are subject to change.

Refund Information: It is our policy not to refund registration fees once a program begins, registration closes, or class capacity is met, whichever occurs first. Consideration will be given to refund requests with extreme circumstances, but is not guaranteed. Pavilion and facility rentals must be cancelled at least 60 days prior to rental date, no exceptions.

Ball diamond, canoe, ski and snow tube rentals are not refundable; rain dates may be rescheduled dependent on availability.

Program Cancellations: Programs will be offered unless the number enrolled falls below the minimum. Cancellations due to inclement weather will be posted on WNDU-TV, Channel 16. For information on programming cancellations, please call the Program Hotline at 534-3200.

Special Concerns: The Goshen Parks & Recreation Department’s programs and facilities are available to all patrons regardless of race, national origin, gender, or disability.

Park Rules / Reglas de los Parques 1.

The parks are open to the public from dawn until 11 pm or until the conclusion of a park-approved activity.

2. Leaving a vehicle within any park after the location has closed is prohibited, except in cases of emergency or with the consent of the GPRD. 3. Disturbing, injuring, or removing wildlife and/or vegetation located in any park with out permission of GPRD is prohibited.

4. Pets may be brought into any park only if they are continuously supervised and on a leash, including promptly repairing any damages caused by the pet and properly disposing of any excrement left by the pet on park property.

5. Motorized vehicles are prohibited on all bike and pedestrian trails, except if a person with a disability operates the device. Horses and racing are prohibited on all trails.

6. The speed limit in all parks is 15 miles per hour.

7. The following activities are prohibited in the Goshen parks:

a. Swimming, wading or bathing in any waters. b. Camping, erecting or maintaining a tent or other shelter, structure, or other improvement. c. Building, using or maintaining a fire unless it is contained in a unit for that purpose. d. Possession, consumption, sale or exchange of any alcoholic beverage or illegal drug. e. Discharge of a firearm, use of a weapon or detonation of an explosive. f. Vandalizing, removing or altering any sign. g. Solicitation, sale or promotion of any commercial product or commercial event. h. Bow fishing.

8. The penalty for any of these offenses is a fine up to $250.

Resident and Non-Resident Fees Goshen City residents, through city property taxes, contribute substantially to support facilities and programs offered by the Goshen Parks & Recreation Department. Nonresidents are commonly asked to pay an additional amount so they contribute equally with those city residents. We appreciate non-residents’ understanding in this situation regarding finances. A city resident is anyone who lives within the city limits of Goshen.

Those with a five-digit address are considered non-city residents.
