Welcome Mayor’s Welcome Dear Goshen Parks Patron, I have been enjoying Goshen’s parks since I was growing up just west of Shanklin Park. It is so exciting to see how our Parks & Recreation Department has expanded in both number of parks and number of programs. I have come to the point in my life where I am especially enjoying watching my children utilize the fantastic parks and more that I grew up with in Goshen.

I would like to thank Sheri Howland for her years of service to the Goshen community. She truly did some amazing things and will be missed. Tanya Heyde has taken Sheri’s place as Parks & Recreation superintendent, and she will continue the excellent work we have all come to love. I am looking forward to what new things we will see in our parks over the next few years.

Superintendent Heyde and her staff are continuing to work at expanding and maintaining our parks throughout this community.

My family and I spend a good portion of our free time utilizing Goshen’s parks. It is a great way for us to get out of the house and stay active. Parks also provide venues for community members to meet and get to know one another. The Goshen Parks & Recreation Department has worked hard at creating a year-round experience for everyone. Whether you like hiking, sledding, sailing, triathlons, dance classes, movies, open spaces, splash pads or playgrounds, we have something for you.

This is all part of the continuing effort to enhance our community’s quality of life. Please come out and experience your parks this fall and winter. You will quickly realize why my family loves them, and you will learn just one of the many reasons why I am proud to call Goshen home.

From the Superintendent’s Desk Dear Goshen Resident, It is with great anticipation that I invite you to explore the 2017–2018 Fall & Winter Goshen Parks & Recreation Program Guide. The park staff and I are eager to offer an impressive lineup of fun, enriching and quality-of-life experiences for all ages.

As the warmer temperatures of summer give way to the crisp and cooler days of fall and winter, there is still much to enjoy in Goshen's parks: from hiking in the gorgeous autumn colors (or snowy landscapes) to playing with children and grandchildren at the many playgrounds to sledding and tubing at Abshire Park—to name just a few invigorating fall and wintertime activities.

Whether you take part in our trail system, canoeing, adult and youth sports, our special events, our fitness classes or other activities, we recognize that the Goshen park system is about you. The Park Department strives to meet the needs and desires of the community, and we welcome your thoughts and ideas. Each and every resident of Goshen is important to our staff.

We take great pride in offering quality programs and maintaining the best parks, facilities and programs possible. It is our privilege to continue to serve the citizens of this wonderful community, and we hope visitors to the Maple City take a few moments to see how these resources can enrich their lives too.

Rieth Interpretive Center Amenities

New and rotating nature and environmental learning. Exhibits for children and adults are added throughout the year. Enclosed kitchen area, nature/birds viewing room, dividable area for breakouts, serene setting, trails, tables and chairs are provided.

Deposit: $100 (with valid driver’s license) Rental fee: $150 + tax per four-hour rental period. $100 fee for non-profit groups, Tuesday–Thursday (must present nonprofit certificate upon reservation). $25 + tax applies for each additional hour.

Goshen Parks Forestry: Trees are a vital part of Goshen’s life and infrastructure. Trees provide everyone with some invaluable services—and they do these services more cheaply and efficiently than human designs. People need trees!

The City of Goshen has two tree programs, which it offers through the Goshen Parks & Recreation Department, to help residents care for the “urban forest.”

Volunteer Opportunities and Support

In addition, there are various volunteer opportunities in the public woods of Goshen. Invasive plant species removal, trail maintenance, tree planting and trash cleanup are some of the major ongoing projects within Goshen’s urban forest. The Municipal Tree Nursery is one of the sites for volunteer work.

While there is sweat involved in all these efforts, there is also a lot of fun, and especially the opportunity to be outside, learning about the wide world of trees! Contact the forester at 537-0986 to arrange volunteer projects.

Interpretive displays, presentations and programs create opportunities for learning experiences. Group programs are offered for children, families, adults and seniors. All age groups and school levels are invited to participate. School Programs Schedule a field trip to the Rieth Interpretive Center for your school group, club, scouts, home school, church group, seniors group or whomever. Nature Hikes Take a walk in the woods as we look for spring wildflowers, signs of bird nests, wildlife habitats and new leaves on trees. Join us in observing nature and the changing seasons. Call Aaron, 537-0986, for more information.

Youth Programs

Youth Basketball Camp

This camp will launch participants into the sport of basketball.

Camp is designed to introduce those new to the sport and to further participants' understanding by instructing on a variety of basketball rules while also implementing new skills. This two-day camp is very helpful in preparing for youth basketball league play. Camp will meet at a Goshen Community School TBA, on January 13 and 20. Cost is only $10; register now through January 11. Contact Jordan, 537-3843, with questions.

Ages 6–7: 10–11:30 am Ages 8–9: 12 noon–1:30 pm

Youth Basketball

This exciting league will run from January 22 through March 10. All games will be played on Saturdays with one practice per week in a Goshen Community Schools gymnasium. League is co-ed and for ages 6–9; divisions will be based on age and enrollment. Pre-registration is required and is being accepted at the Goshen Park Office now through January 12 or until league is full. Cost is $45 per player. Contact Jordan, 537-3843, with questions.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (Youth and Adult)

This introductory session will give participants a basic understanding of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu history, theory and techniques.

Classes will include a warmup, stretching and technical instruction. Self-defense techniques and movement drills, without striking, also will be taught. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is unique to most other self-defense systems as it focuses on use of leverage and proper technique, taking the attacker to the ground and defusing the situation by use of joint locks and holds. Class is taught by Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Goshen instructor Bryan Barrick at 427 West Pike Street, Suite 2 (behind Bob Evans and Walgreens). Session cost is $25.

Pirate Experience Camp

Arrrr! Who wants to become a pirate? Come for a fun week of pirate adventures! Experience the world of pirates through stories, games and take-home crafts. Pirates will get a (temporary) tattoo, learn to read a treasure map, assemble an eyepatch and swashbuckling (foam) sword, walk the plank and more. All materials provided; kids just need to bring their curiosity! Ages 3–6. Class meets at Rieth Interpretive Center, 410 West Plymouth Avenue.

Princess Experience Camp

Would you like to be a princess? Well m’lady, join this class and be transformed! Enjoy learning about princesses by listening to stories, playing games and making princess crafts. Decorate your own crown, make a sparkly necklace, dance and swirl in your tutu (all materials provided)! Practice tea party etiquette and walking with poise. Ages 3–6.

Class meets at Rieth Interpretive Center, 410 West Plymouth Avenue.

Fee: $60 Dates: December 11–15 Times: 6:30–7:30 pm

Champion Force Cheerleading

Participants gain a sense of team spirit, improved self-esteem and readiness for high school cheer squad tryouts. In our program, we teach cheerleading and pompom techniques, jumps, stunts, cheers, chants, dance steps and voice projection. Coaches choreograph a competition routine, which all students learn and practice throughout the session in preparation for our Cheer Competition. Champion Force is a non-profit youth outreach program. Champion Force is open to boys and girls ages 4 to 18. Class meets at Schrock Pavilion in Shanklin Park, August 21 through December 13 (no class on November 23). Registration and first class was on August 21. Late registration is accepted. Special Events Daddy/Daughter Valentine’s Dance Mark your calendar and get your tickets for this elegant evening! As always, this traditionally treasured dad and daughter night out will include awesome music provided by a professional DJ to dance the night away to, along with refreshments, plus each girl will receive a special memento. Show your favorite valentine how special she is by joining us on Thursday, February 22 from 6 to 8 pm at the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds, Goshen.

Memory photos will be taken and will be available for purchase at the dance. This is a ticketed event–the cost is $12 per person. Tickets to reserve your spot must be purchased in advance at the Goshen Park Office. Ticket sales will continue until capacity is reached.Seating is limited and fills fast, so please reserve early to ensure ticket availability. Contact Kim, 534-2901, with questions.

Storybook Trail Walk While Building Literacy Skills!

Storybook Trail is designed in partnership with the Goshen Public Library.

The Storybook Trail is intended to combine the pleasures of reading with the benefits of walking together outdoors. The story begins on the south end of Rieth Interpretive Center at the arch on the trail connecting to the Classified Forest. Storybook Trail is open year around and is free of charge! Letters to Santa

Drop your letters to Santa in the North Pole mailbox at the Goshen Public Library from November 6 through December 8, and Santa and his helpers will make sure you get a return letter sent right to your house.

There is no postage necessary; just be sure to include your full mailing address, and print neatly! The mailbox is located on the second floor of the library.

Dance Programs Dance attire varies by instructor and by the different forms of dance. At registration, please request a copy of the dance attire requirements for your class. Dancers must be the minimum age required by August 1 of the session year.

Pre-registration is required at the Park Office. Instructors will assist in class placement if needed; please contact the Park Office for details. Classes meet at our downtown studio at 216 South Main Street. Since class size is limited and your child will be taking a place in class upon registration, refunds will not be issued after class capacity is met or registration closes, whichever occurs first.

Creative Dance

This is a class for children who are age 3 by August 1, as well as younger 4-year-olds. Class will focus on creative dance movement, including learning to follow rhythm, mirroring technique and improvisation.

Dance Sampler

A class for students ages 4 and 5. It will cover dance warmups, stretching and beginning technique for Jazz, Ballet and Modern.

This class is great for children who are aspiring gymnasts, budding ballerinas or for those who simply love to move with music.

Modern/Ballet

Students ages 5–7 will learn age-adjusted ballet and modern dance technique. Your child will learn proper body alignment and develop flexibility, coordination and grace. Your child will also experience applying their own movement thoughts to the art of improvisation.

Classes will facilitate the joy of dance and appreciation for beauty, as well as build well-balanced, healthy respect and discipline.

The difficulty level will increase with Beginning Modern II and Intermediate Modern.

Session II: 2018 (January 8–May 5) • Priority registration for returning dancers begins October 30, and open registration begins November 20. Registration deadline is December 22.

• This exciting session prepares dancers for the Spring Concert on stage in May. In addition to class instruction, dancers will learn choreography and be involved in costume fittings for the performance. This process requires commitment from dancers for a 14- to 16-week session.

• A spring concert dance costume, chosen by instructors, will need to be purchased for this session, not to exceed $50.

• Session II begins the week of January 8 and goes through May 5.

No classes January 15, February 19 and March 29–April 5. Monday classes meet for 14 weeks, Wednesday classes meet for 16 weeks, and Thursday classes meet for 15 weeks. Monday classes will not meet on: January 15, February 19 or April 2; Wednesday classes April 4; and Thursday classes March 29 or April 5.

• All classes have limited enrollment; please register early to ensure availability.

Session I: 2018 (August 20–November 20) • Priority registration for returning dancers begins July 9, and open registration begins July 23. Registration deadline is August 10.

• Fall session classes begin August 20. This is a 12-week session.

Classes will not meet September 3 or October 15–19.

Modern/Ballet for Children with Special Needs

This class will contain the same elements as Modern/Ballet. Students will learn the vocabulary of modern and ballet with sensitivity to dancers’ needs. Class will evolve according to the progression of the class. Please speak with instructor regarding enrollment.

Adult Ballroom Dance

Join in the fun of learning to dance to the Rumba, Fox Trot, Waltz, Swing and many more, all the while keeping fit! All ages are welcome. A perfect opportunity to prepare for upcoming weddings and events. Register with your friend, partner or spouse to make this class more enjoyable. Three class levels are available: Introductory for those beginning to explore dance, Intermediate for those who have some dance experience and Advanced for those who have completed our Introductory and Intermediate classes. Instructor will determine dance level.

Continuous sessions are available to use as further dance growth or to better serve your scheduling purposes; you may register for any or all sessions. Cost is $50 per couple (pairing is limited, so bring a friend!). Instructor: Ted Campbell. For further details, contact Kim, 534-2901.

This league plays on Wednesday evenings, November 8 through January 24. Teams are guaranteed a minimum of nine games and an end of season tournament. Games are played at Goshen High School. Nine regular-season games will be played at Goshen High School (see Note below), along with a post-season tournament.

Pre-registration is currently being accepted at the Goshen Parks & Recreation Office through October 20 or until the league is full. In order to secure a spot in the league, the registration/ roster form with a paid entry fee must be collected at the Park Office. Cost is $580 per team. Adult Basketball Open Gym

Enjoy some Wednesday evening pick-up games during our Men’s 40 and Older Open Gym. Individuals play each Wednesday, 7–9 pm, November 1 to March 28 (see Note below) in a Goshen Community Schools gymnasium, to be announced. Pre-registration is required and is currently being accepted at the Goshen Parks & Recreation Office. An open-gym pass will be issued upon registration for check-in during game play. Cost is $40. Co-Ed Volleyball

League will be conducted the week of November 6 through March 1 (gymnasiums will be closed during holiday breaks November 22, 23, December 25–28, January 1–4, January 15 and February 19, as well as during school events to be announced). For ages 10 years and older. All fitness levels are welcome, as your POUNDPro instructor Dawn Kitson can modify classes to meet participants’ needs. Please bring a yoga mat or beach towel to class. Instructor will provide the Ripstix®. Classes meet at the Rieth Interpretive Center on Mondays and Wednesdays, 6–6:45 pm.

Handmade Holiday Crafts

Craft class for non-crafters! Want to make some gifts for Christmas? These classes will have easy-to-assemble items and short-term projects with minimal skills required. All materials and tools provided for you. Nothing to shop for or bring to class. Preregistration is required at the Park Office for both classes.

Class 1: $20 Wednesday, December 6, 6:30–7:30 pm, Rieth Interpretive Center. Create a paper cut-out silhouette picture to frame (you cut out shape, pick backing, assemble) and a pair of hot/cold rice packs (you fill a pocket and then sew a 2-inch line).

Class 2: $20 Saturday, December 9, 10–11 am, Rieth Interpretive Center. Assemble two pairs of earrings, with a large variety of charms to choose from. Pierced and non-pierced styles both available. If you can squeeze pliers, you can do this craft!

Pickleball

What is pickleball?! It is a sweet sport with a sour name, a craze that is sweeping the nation. It combines many elements of tennis, badminton and Ping-pong. The game is played both indoors and outdoors on a badminton-size court, with a slightly modified tennis net, paddles and a plastic ball. Our outdoor courts are located at Model Elementary School, 412 South Greene Road, in Goshen (open seasonally). If you want to learn more or see what pickleball mania is all about, you may also join us for indoor play at a Goshen Community Schools gymnasium, starting in November. Water Aerobics

This water exercise class has something for everyone and is suitable for all fitness levels. The class includes a morning stretch, thermal warm-up aerobic training as well as strength, core training, flexibility and balance. Because the water creates more resistance than land, this workout is efficient and easy on the joints, and participants get a great workout without sweating.

Various water levels are used to create variety and to alleviate the necessity to swim. Your instructor has 25 years of experience and is trained by the Aquatic Exercise Association, an internationally acclaimed organization with the highest of standards. She believes that exercise and fitness are crucial to each individual’s physical, psychological and emotional health. Class meets Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6–7 am, at Goshen Middle School. Pre-register at the Parks Office to receive the reduced session rate, or take advantage of dropping in anytime throughout sessions and pay the drop-in rate of $6 per class. Visit the skate park this season to check out the surfaced, quarter pipe, half pipe, street pipe, handrail box, grind rail and more! Lighted park located near the corner of Chicago and Lincoln avenues, adjacent to Rogers Park. The facility promotes the sports of inline skating, roller skating and skate boarding (no bikes, please).

When using the skate park, please follow the rules posted. Remember, be courteous, pick up trash and respect the ramps; this is your park! The skate park is open daily from dawn until dusk while weather permits. No entry fee. Skate at your own risk.

Outdoor Activities Elkhart River Canoe and Fidler Pond Boat Rentals Take a canoe trip on the Elkhart River or enjoy Fidler Pond with a canoe, kayak or pedal boat. Lifejackets are provided for ages 4 and up (not recommended for children ages 3 and under). An adult must accompany children under the age of 18.

Season: April 15–October 15 Maximum capacity per canoe: two adults and two children, or three adults.

• Plan accordingly! Please take note of the water currents, obstructions and weather.

• Glass containers are prohibited.

• Please do not litter. Pack it in, pack it out!

Fidler Pond Boat Rentals • Visit the red barn at Fidler Pond Park, 1424 Lincolnway East, for your boat rentals.

• One- or two-hour boat rentals.

• Rentals offered daily beginning at 8 am; all boat returns are one hour prior to dusk, so please plan accordingly.

• Canoe, Kayak and pedal boat rental fees are $10 (tax included) per hour per boat.

• Fishing pole rental (for bank fishing) is $2/2 hours.

• Lifejackets are mandatory while on Fidler Pond; if you bring your own canoe or kayak and need a lifejacket, rental is $2/2 hours.

Elkhart River Canoe Trip • Shanklin Park on West Plymouth Avenue to Ox Bow County Park.

• Trip length is approximately four hours.

• Canoe trip is offered daily: 10 am departure, 2 pm pick-up.

• Shuttle service is provided from Ox Bow Park back to Shanklin Park. Parents/guardians must supply car/booster seats for children.

• Visit the Goshen Park Department Administration Office 48 hours in advance to make your Elkhart River canoeing reservations.

Programas para niños Baloncesto para jóvenes

Esta emocionante liga será jugada la semana del 22 de enero hasta el 10 de marzo. Campamento de experiencia pirata

Arr! ¿Quién desea hacerse pirata? ¡Venga a una semana de diversión de aventuras piratas! Experimente el mundo de los piratas a través de historias, juegos y manualidades para llevar a casa. Los piratas recibirán un tatuaje (temporal), aprenderán a leer un mapa del tesoro, ensamblarán un parche de ojo y una audaz espada (de goma espuma), caminarán el tablón del barco y mucho más. Jiu Jitsu brasileño (jóvenes y adultos)

Programas de danza para jóvenes Los bailarines deben tener la edad mínima requerida para el 1 de agosto del año en sesión. Se requiere preinscripción en la Goshen Oficina de Parques. • Esta emocionante sesión prepara a las bailarinas para el Concierto de Primavera en el escenario, en el mes de mayo. Las bailarinas aprenderán coreografía y estarán usando su vestuario para la presentación. Este proceso requiere el compromiso de los bailarines para un sesión de 14–16 semanas.

Baile de Salón para adultos

Programas para adultos y familias Baloncesto masculino

Esta liga juega el miércoles por la noche, 8 de noviembre hasta el 24 de enero (no hay juegos durante el cierre de la escuela). Nueve juegos regulares de la temporada serán jugados en la escuela superior de Goshen, junto con un torneo de final de temporada.

Pickleball

¿Qué es pickleball? Es un deporte dulce con un nombre acido, una tendencia que está arrasando la nación. Combina muchos elementos del tenis, bádminton y Ping-pong. Se juega tanto adentro como afuera en una cancha del tamaño bádminton, con una red de tenis ligeramente modificada, raquetas pequeñas y una pelota de plástico. Nuestras canchas al exterior se encuentran en Model Elementary School, 412 South Greene Road, en Goshen (abiertas en temporada). Si quiere aprender más o ver de qué se trata la pickleball manía, nos puede acompañar para un juego de interiores en el gimnasio de Goshen Community Schools, a partir de noviembre. Aquarobics

Esta clase de ejercicio en el agua tiene algo para todos y es apropiada para todos los niveles de acondicionamiento. La clase incluye un estiramiento matutino, calentamiento térmico aeróbico, así como ejercicios de fortalecimiento, parte media, flexibilidad y equilibrio. Visite el parque de patinaje esta temporada y vea la superficie, tubos de un cuarto, medio, callejeros, caja con pasamanos, riel para acrobacias ¡y más! Es un parque iluminado cerca de la esquina de las avenidas Chicago y Lincoln junto a Rogers Park. Estas instalaciones promueven los deportes de patinaje en línea, patinaje en ruedas y patinetas (por favor, no llevar bicicletas). Al utilizar las rampas de patinaje, por favor siga el reglamento indicado. Recuerde sea cortés, levante su basura y respete las rampas, ¡este es su parque! Registration Procedures/ Procedimientos de Registro Registration for recreation programs, activities and rentals will be taken only in person at the park office or designated location. Registration will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

In all cases, registration fees must be paid in advanced of the start of the program at the time of registration. Program dates, times, and locations listed in this program guide are subject to change.

Please call the Park Department Office to confirm program information, 534-2901.

Refund Information: It is our policy not to refund registration fees once a program begins, registration closes, or class capacity is met, whichever occurs first. Consideration will be given to refund requests with extreme circumstances, but is not guaranteed. Pavilion and facility rentals must be cancelled at least 60 days prior to rental date, no exceptions.

Ball diamond, canoe, ski and snow tube rentals are not refundable; rain dates may be rescheduled dependent on availability.

Program Cancellations: Programs will be offered unless the number enrolled falls below the minimum. Cancellations due to inclement weather will be posted on WNDU-TV, Channel 16. For information on programming cancellations, please call the Weather Hot Line at 534-3200.

Special Concerns: The Goshen Parks & Recreation Department’s programs and facilities are available to all patrons regardless of race, national origin, gender, or disability.

The parks are open to the public from dawn until 11 pm or until the conclusion of a park approved activity.

2. Leaving a vehicle within any park after the location has closed is prohibited, except in cases of emergency or with the consent of the GPRD. 3. Disturbing, injuring, or removing wildlife and/or vegetation located in any park with out permission of GPRD is prohibited.

4. Pets may be brought into any park only if they are continuously supervised and on a leash, including promptly repairing any damages caused by the pet and properly disposing of any excrement left by the pet on park property.

5. Motorized vehicles are prohibited on all bike and pedestrian trails, except if a person with a disability operates the device. Horses and racing are prohibited on all trails.

6. The speed limit in all parks is 15 miles per hour.

7. The following activities are prohibited in the Goshen Parks:

a. Swimming, wading or bathing in any waters that are within any park or other recreational area unless a lifeguard is on duty at the particular site or unless otherwise posted. b. Camping, erecting or maintaining a tent or other shelter, structure, or other improvement. c. Building, using or maintaining a fire unless it is contained in a unit for that purpose. d. Possession, consumption, sale or exchange of any alcoholic beverage or illegal drug. e. Discharge of a firearm, use of a weapon or detonation of an explosive. f. Vandalizing, removing or altering any sign. g. Solicitation, sale or promotion of any commercial product or commercial event. h. Bow fishing 8. The penalty for any of these offenses is a fine up to $250.

Resident and Non-Resident Fees Goshen City residents, through city property taxes, contribute substantially to support facilities and programs offered by the Goshen Parks & Recreation Department. Nonresidents are commonly asked to pay an additional amount so they contribute equally with those city residents. We appreciate non-residents’ understanding in this situation regarding finances. A city resident is anyone who lives within the city limits of Goshen.

Gift Certificate Wayne Wogoman Welcome Center The Wayne Wogoman Welcome Center is located at Fidler Pond Park, 1424 Lincolnway East. Visit the center to view displays like the mammoth and mastodon bones found locally in Goshen and rotating displays representing Goshen’s history, compliments of the Goshen Historical Museum. The center offers trail maps and information on local points of interest like where to eat, shop and play. Unique photographs and postcards are available for purchase.

The Wayne Wogoman Welcome Center is open Wednesday–Friday, 10 am–3:30 pm.

Also located on the property is a gazebo with exhibits marking its historical location along the Lincoln Highway route provided by the Lincoln Highway Association.
