BY REBECCA J. STOLTZFUS ’83, President
I OFTEN ASK YOU, our alumni and friends: What was it about your Goshen College experience that was most formative and enduring?
At the heart of your responses is a common thread: relationships. You tell stories about friends, mentors, professors and host families — the bonds you formed with specific people you encountered through GC. And you speak about how Goshen College steeped you in a deep sense of community — a way of being in relationship with others.
The heart of GC bears witness to a way of relating to one another that is rooted in love: in belovedness, empowerment, learning and action.
The first person who impressed upon me that the heart of GC was relationships was Arlene Martin Mark ’55, who became a personal friend and mentor to me early in my presidency. From her experiences as an alumna, a donor and a past board chair, Arlene urged me to cherish and steward GC’s culture of relationship above all else. She echoed the pithy words of philosopher Martin Buber: “Relationship educates.”
Arlene was a well-known community leader in Elkhart County and a fierce advocate for justice and peace in our community and world. She was a founding donor to our immersive Inside-Out course, which brings together GC students and incarcerated students in the Elkhart County Jail. Arlene knew that our understanding of our justice system is transformed when we are in relationship with people who are behind bars.
The GC heart is alive and beating in the injustice and violence of our world today. As we ache for a better world, it is tempting to believe that there is a set of moral rules that will give us justice and peace. But relationships are even more foundational than moral rules. When Jesus was asked, “Teacher, you know the law and prophets. What is the greatest commandment?” Or, which is the most important rule? Jesus said, Love God and love each other. And love doesn’t follow a strict set of rules. It is a creative journey that always puts relationships at the center.
In the first month of my presidency, Arlene made a lead gift to the President’s Innovation Fund, enabling us to distribute many grants to support faculty scholarship and innovation. Later, through the Connected Cause Campaign, she gave an even more generous gift to the renovation of Westlawn Hall. This gift is commemorated in the Mark Community Room in Westlawn, which now hosts a wide variety of gatherings and groups, including students, employees, alumni and the Board of Directors.
Each of you is part of the living heart of Goshen College. Our connectedness spans decades, cultures and continents, and it makes alumni gatherings so much fun! I am encouraged whenever I learn about the ways that you are building relationships in your communities around the world.
May our shared heart beat on, Maple Leafs!

Florence Nightingale, founder of modern nursing, tended to wounded soldiers by the light of a small oil lamp during the Crimean War, earning the enduring title “The Lady with the Lamp.” Today, many nursing programs commemorate their graduates with a symbolic lamp during the pinning ceremony, representing the light of knowledge and compassion. The historic lamps featured on the cover honor seven decades of Goshen College Nursing graduates.

Through the Goshen College Oral History Project, alumni from across generations have shared stories of growth, community and lifelong friendships. These reflections highlight the lasting impact of their time at GC — where connections made in classrooms, residence halls and beyond continue to shape their lives today. Enjoy a few of the many stories and photos shared.

“My experience at Goshen College was life-changing. One of my best friends from GC is still my best friend 25 years later. We had almost every class together and even did our student teaching at the same school. The school also provided me with unforgettable experiences, such as the SST trip to Costa Rica, which completely changed the trajectory of my life. I added classes to become an ESOL teacher and went on to earn my doctorate. GC has had a profound impact on my life and the legacy I leave for my children.”

“My time at Goshen College was lifechanging. I met my wife there, made lifelong friends, and had an incredible experience on SST — we were part of a small group, and it was there that we met. Graduation day was special because we were both originally in the Class of 1978, but took an extra year to put ourselves through school. I grew emotionally and learned to appreciate different ways of thinking and how to be a better person. My time at Goshen College was truly a journey of growth and discovery.”

“The most profound and enduring aspect of my GC experience lies in the indelible connections I formed. Even after a decade, I can easily reconnect with my fellow Maple Leafs via phone, text, WhatsApp or emails, and our conversations resume as if we never parted. Returning to GC twice felt like homecoming, reaffirming the sense of belonging that I experienced during my undergraduate years.”

“I attended Goshen College and met my husband there. His cousin introduced us at the library. We both took part in the SST program, which was an eye-opening and enriching experience. It helped me to appreciate other viewpoints and look at the world with a wider lens. I was the first in my family to attend college. I was very well prepared for life after graduation and I encouraged two of my sisters and both of our daughters to attend as well. “

“I lived off campus with a group of friends for two years. We were intentional about relationships, decision making, and deepening our faith. Those friendships have lasted to this day. Goshen College was a place where I grew in confidence and in my abilities to take on the challenge of being a teacher. I’m most thankful for the friendships I made during my time there. They have been lasting and enduring, and I’m still in contact with many of them.”

Last fall, 12 first-year students joined Goshen College’s first Honors Program cohort — a new opportunity for high-achieving, curious students to engage in deep interdisciplinary study from day one. This fall, 15 more students joined, as the sophomores continue to grow as writers, researchers and leaders. The cohort meets monthly for activities and trips, and takes small, discussion-based courses like Modernity and Spirituality, taught by history professor Philipp Gollner (above) Over four years, students complete 15 honors credits through seminars, research projects and a capstone, along with leadership experiences across campus.

On Oct. 3 at the opening convocation, President Rebecca Stoltzfus ’83 presented three seniors, who reflect the college’s five core values, with the Global Citizenship Award. Fernando Daza (above, second), a business and peace, justice and conflict studies double major from Maicao, Colombia, was awarded first place and a $10,000 scholarship. Lindsey Graber (above, left), an English major from Goshen, and Aysia Adkins (above, right), a music major from Goshen, were runnerups, each receiving a $5,000 scholarship. The scholarship, in its fourth year, is made possible by Shashi Buluswar ’90 Read more about the recipients and scholarship at goshen.edu/GCA25.

At an end-of-year employee celebration on May 23, six Goshen College employees were awarded with the second annual Maple Leaf Awards for Employee Excellence.
• Eric Bradley 5 , head librarian for the Mennonite Historical Library, and Breanna Nickel ’10 3 , assistant professor of Bible and religion, earned the Passionate Learner Award, which recognizes employees who are always learning and applying fresh, innovative and creative approaches to their work.
• Janine Ostergren ’86 4 , administrative assistant for the education and Deaf studies department, and Andrew Hartzler ’98 2 , professor of accounting, earned the Servant Leader Award, which recognizes employees who go above and beyond to care for, support and help others in their work.
• Tyra Carver ’16 6 , head coach of women’s basketball, and Jewel Lehman 1 , professor and department chair of kinesiology, earned the Inclusive Community Builder Award, which recognizes employees who go above and beyond to foster a culture of belonging for all members of the Goshen College community, encouraging others to be their authentic selves.

Goshen College received a $550,000 National Science Foundation grant to upgrade its campus internet network, dramatically expanding bandwidth and supporting STEM education and research. “This upgrade will create a high-speed, redundant network core to serve STEM processes, research, and labs,” said Paul Housholder ’93, director of IT infrastructure. The improvements include a 10 Gbps research connection to the statewide network and 144 terabytes of dedicated STEM data storage — more than the college’s entire Google Drive usage. Co-principal investigator and physics professor Paul Meyer Reimer ’83 said the upgrades will strengthen collaboration and “allow us to better cooperate with colleagues in other countries,” amplifying Goshen’s global and research connections.
MILLION RECORD
First-year students embraced Goshen College’s motto, “Culture for Service,” by spending a day serving nine different local organizations. Some students worked on cabinet installation with Habitat for Humanity.
Goshen College raised an extraordinary $18,004,693 total in the 2024–2025 fiscal year, the highest total in more than two decades. Donors also broke records for the Goshen College Fund for the second year in a row, with 2,051 households contributing $2,562,061 to the GC Fund, a 10.8% increase over last year’s record. “We are deeply grateful for the generosity and trust our many alumni, friends and partners have shown this year in so many ways,” said Jodi Beyeler ’00, vice president for institutional advancement.

In Goshen College’s unique Maple Scholars program, undergraduate students spend eight weeks in the summer focusing on a particular area of research, alongside faculty members who serve as mentors and colleagues.

Professor Emeritus of Chemistry
Donald (Don) Clemens, professor emeritus of chemistry and longtime chair of the chemistry and natural science departments, died on Sunday, July 27. He was 86 years old. Clemens graduated from Goshen College with a degree in chemistry in 1961, immediately going on to get a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania. Following his completion of the program in 1966, Clemens spent one year with DuPont Chemical in New Jersey before returning to Goshen College, where he would teach for the next 37 years.
During his time at Goshen College, Clemens was not only a beloved chemistry professor and advisor to many students, but he was also heavily involved in other campus activities. For years, he served as the faculty athletic representative, working with student-athletes and ensuring their eligibility to play, among many other duties. He also served as the college’s pre-med adviser. And along with his wife, Marie, he led a Study-Service Term unit to Nicaragua in 1970, and led three units to Belize in 1978 and 1979.
After his retirement in 2004, Clemens remained active in the Goshen community, attending College Mennonite Church and volunteering at numerous local nonprofits, including many years at the local food pantry, The Window. Clemens was born in Elroy, Pa., in 1939, and attended Christopher Dock Mennonite High School before studying at Goshen. He married Marie Gehman ‘81 in Quakertown, Pa., in 1961.
He is survived by Marie; their daughters Rhonda (David) Talbott ’87 of Indianapolis and Denise (Michael) Murphy ’90 of Goshen; their five grandchildren Margo ’19 and William Talbott, and Lauren ’25, Megan and Jacob Murphy; and his siblings: Orrie (Terri) Clemens ’63 of Broomfield, Colo.; Leanne (Dale) Wentorf of Goshen, Ind.; Jane (Hank ’68) Landes ’68 of Souderton, Pa.; Carolyn (Philip ’72) Bontrager of Grand Marais, Mich.; and Richard (Jane ’74) Clemens ’74 of Bend, Ore.

The fall and winter sports teams — men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, and men’s and women’s bowling — are included in the spring/ summer issue. Visit goleafs.net for the latest updates on all the Maple Leaf teams.
Eric Pettipiece (Dorchester, Ontario) became the first Goshen pitcher to earn all-conference honors since 2021. After missing the 2024 season due to injury, he posted the fourth-best ERA in the Crossroads League (3.55) and threw four complete games — secondmost in league play. Justin Dambruck (Curaçao) made the conference Gold Glove Team at third base, finishing with a .935 fielding percentage and no errors after March 11, and none were at home at “Sarge” Yoder Field.
The Maple Leafs won eight straight conference games in 2025, their longest win streak in conference play in 24 years. Shea VanScoter (Richmond, Mich.) ended her career as Goshen’s all-time leader in hits and doubles. Alyssa McDonald (Salt Lake City, Utah)
finished her time as a Maple Leaf as the career leader in triples. Head Coach Luke Wagner, in just his third season, now holds both the most conference wins and the best conference winning percentage in program history. The Class of 2025 graduates with more conference wins than any senior class in school history.
The Maple Leafs earned four WHAC conference player of the week honors in 2025.
• Ben Koop (Kitchener, Ontario) — Attacker of the Week, Jan. 20-26
• Igor Sapucaia (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) — Setter of the Week, Jan. 20-26
• Bruno Barac (Split, Croatia) — Defender of the Week, Jan. 20-26 and Feb. 24-March 2
Koop was named Second-Team AllConference, averaging 3.34 kills and 0.41 aces per set. His 311 total kills were a drastic difference from the 56 in his first season with the Leafs a year ago.
Three school records fell this season, thanks largely to first-year athletes.
• Sam Sofolahan (Indianapolis, Ind.) — 100 meters
• Detroit Walker (Cahokia, Ill.) — 110m hurdles
• Sofolahan, Ty Hazen (Middlebury, Ind.), Walker and Danial Murphy (Detroit, Mich.) — 4x100m relay team Goshen was represented at nationals by the 4x800-meter relay team of Charlie Aldrich (Capac, Mich.), Jordan Garlinger (Decatur, Ind.), Kevin Liddell (South Bend, Ind.) and Bruno Kipsang (Eldoret, Kenya).

Sophomore Jaylah Leggett (Elkhart, Ind.) followed up her indoor 60-meter school record with another in the outdoor 200 meters. She earned AllCrossroads League honors in both the 100 and 200 meters, while Mercy Chebet (Nakuru, Kenya) made the team for her performance in the 10,000 meters.
Goshen’s nine wins were its most in a season since 2019. Timo Novak (Neustadt an der Donau, Germany) was the first Crossroads League Men’s Tennis Player of the Week for the Leafs since 2015, but Filippo Gallo (Alassio, Italy) and Pedro Scattolon (Rosario, Argentina) would soon also earn the award later in the season. Gallo and Novak made the All-Crossroads Team

as well. Scattolon’s 15 wins at #6 singles is the most in a season in program history. Timo Novak’s 16 wins at #3 singles tied a program record and Matija Margetic’s (Zagreb, Croatia) 13 wins at #2 singles is tied for second and the most at that position since 1984.
With seven wins, the Maple Leafs posted their best season since 2004 — matching their total number of wins from 2012-2021 combined. Blanka Bodo (Budapest, Hungary) and Uliana Dotsenko (Kherson, Ukraine) were selected on the All-Crossroads League team. Bodo’s 13 wins at #1 singles are tied for the second-most in a season in program history, and the most since 1991. Freshman Dotsenko’s 14 wins at #2 singles are the most in program history.

Men’s and women’s disc golf will become the 17th and 18th teams at Goshen College. The Maple Leafs will begin their inaugural season in the fall of 2026 with Jason Samuel ’93 (above) as the program’s head coach. Samuel, who currently serves as the elected state coordinator of the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA), will step into the head coach role full time on Feb. 1. He is an associate professor of communication at Goshen College and the general manager of the award-winning 91.1FM The Globe.
“I’m deeply grateful for this opportunity and obviously excited,” Samuel said. The time is right.”
As a member of the Great Lakes Conference in College Disc Golf, GC will compete against NCAA and NAIA schools from around the country.
Goshen College was awarded the Champions of Character FiveStar Institution Silver Award for the 2024-25 school year from the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics). Goshen remains among only eight schools recognized yearly since the award’s inception.

Held annually, the LEAFYs recognize Goshen student-athletes in several categories for their achievements from the previous school year. Head coaches and athletic administrators nominated and voted on award recipients, and the winners were announced at the Sept. 14 event.

BY DANIEL JAMES '24 AND ANGELA SIENKO
The Goshen College Nursing Department is a community that sees the whole person, learns by doing and leads with purpose, fostering excellence with heart.
WHEN THREE Goshen College Nursing Department chairs sit down together to talk about the school’s nursing program, you hear one story in three distinct voices. Vicky Kirkton ’73 served as chair from 1998-2011. She went on to guide the department through enrollment swings and new competition while helping to lay the groundwork for graduate study. Brenda Srof ’82, an alumna who chaired from 2012 to 2020, balanced growth and rigor during years of national nursing shortages. Today’s chair, Jewel Yoder ’99, ’20 (DNP), stepped in during 2021 and now steers the program through a new era of competency-based learning, advanced simulation, a new facility and an ever more diverse student body.
While each has led through changing times, the program’s foundation never wavered — it’s always been about whole-person education grounded in compassion, community and courageous innovation.
From its beginning in 1949 as Indiana’s first Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, GC Nursing has blended rigorous academics with a caring ethos rooted in Anabaptist values. “There’s a subtle foundation in the understanding of what it means to live a life of stewardship and peace,” Srof says. “It’s hard to define, but it’s there.”
That foundation shapes how students learn to see and serve the whole person. Faculty mentor closely, meeting one-on-one with students and guiding them through both clinical skills and emotional resilience. “We constantly hear just how different our
graduates are,” Kirkton says. “They’re prepared to look beyond the diagnosis and care for the person.”
Yoder continues that legacy today with attention to her students’ mental health and balance.
“Nursing students today face immense pressures, from the demands of a rigorous program to family expectations, athletics or mental health challenges,” she says. “At Goshen College, we strive to support them with counseling, resources and a community that helps them manage stress while learning how to care for others.”
The story of GC Nursing is one of thoughtful risk-taking. When national shortages and regional competition grew in the 1980s and ’90s, the department responded creatively, launching an RN-to-BSN program that made higher education accessible for working nurses. “We saw a need and built something that worked,” Kirkton says.
Innovation continued under Srof’s leadership when the college added a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in 2007 and, later, a collaborative Doctor of Nursing Practice with Eastern Mennonite University. “Starting graduate programs as a small college was gutsy and transformative for primary care in this region,” Srof says.
Technology has advanced dramatically, from self-paced “learning labs” in the 1970s to today’s high-fidelity simulation suites in the new state-of-the-art Center for Nursing and Public Health in Westlawn. Yoder is excited to lead the next phase: simulation accreditation

Goshen, Indiana
“In 1949, I joined Goshen College’s very first class of nursing students — a pioneering group of just eight. We were a part of something entirely new… we were registered nurses, ready to ‘heal the world’s ills,’ and to our immense pride, our class earned the highest state board scores of any Bachelor of Science nursing program in the nation.”
and competency-based learning that prepares nurses to step confidently into clinical roles. “We have five different manikins that add a wow factor,” Yoder says, “but never at the expense of human-focused care.”
For each chair, innovation has meant more than adopting new tools. It’s about adapting while staying true to GC’s mission. “Our [small] size makes us nimble,” Yoder says. “We can dream big and still keep students at the center.”
For 75 years, GC nurses have strengthened both local healthcare and global well-being. Nearly half of Goshen College nursing graduates stay in Elkhart County — staffing Beacon and Goshen Health, caring for residents at Greencroft and leading teams at Maple City Health Care Center, for example.
“What’s good for nursing is good for the college and the community,” Yoder says. “Our partnerships keep classrooms connected to real needs.”
Those connections extend worldwide. Nursing alumni serve in public health, nurse education, midwifery, global health NGOs and humanitarian missions — often inspired by GC’s Study-Service Term. “That cross-cultural piece has always set our graduates apart,” Kirkton says. “They’re comfortable with differences. They lead with empathy.”

Homer, Alaska
“This program changed my life. I was a high school dropout when I was admitted to Goshen College… I can’t imagine any other career that would have been so much fun — or so selfdeveloping. Hopefully, I’ve changed other people’s lives because of my service.”
As GC educates the next generation of nurses, Srof sees the program continuing to model active, competency-based education that prioritizes what students can do, not just what they know. And Kirkton believes the same trust and collaboration that built past programs will carry the college forward.
Yoder envisions GC as a regional hub for healthcare learning, serving students, clinicians and community partners alike. “We want our simulation center to train not just GC nurses but EMTs, CNAs and others in the area,” she says.
Predicting 25 years ahead is tricky in a world where even the tools of charting and diagnostics are changing fast. Yoder’s nearer-term horizon is clear: lean into competency-based education so practice partners receive nurses who are ready on day one; earn simulation accreditation; and grow the program’s role as a regional training hub — all while holding fast to the human touch.
Srof sees broader shifts in pedagogy across higher education, like more active learning, clearer outcomes and assessment that focuses on what students can do. Kirkton points to the practical realities that will shape the

future, such as demographic shifts and funding in health care and education, and the need for leaders who can read the moment and respond with integrity.
Underneath it all is formation for leadership. Yoder recalls a former

dean telling her, “Well, you’re a GC nurse.” The point was not pride; it was expectation. GC educates nurses who step up — who become charge nurses sooner than they expect, who communicate across cultures, who keep patients at the center even as technology accelerates around them. Asked for words of advice to new nursing graduates each chair offered this: 1949–1953

VICKY KIRKTON: “Be patient with yourself; the transition to practice takes time. Find allies who will cheer you on. Keep going.”
BRENDA SROF: “Work hard. Dream. Write down your core values and return to them. Let those guide you through tough days and big decisions.”
JEWEL YODER: “Practice self-care. Set up your 401(k). Bottle up your compassion so you have some left for yourself. If your compassion begins to fade, stay in nursing, but pivot to a role where you can flourish again.”

Denver, Colorado
“I remember feeling distinctly different as a nursing student from the rest of campus — while others were studying philosophy or theology, we were face-to-face with people’s pain, their struggles and the reallife impact of economic choices on their health.”

Ligonier, Indiana
“I held my first patient’s hand as they took their last breath during COVID. Their family couldn’t be there — I was the only one by their side. It was one of the hardest moments of my career, but also a powerful reminder of why this work matters.
Being pregnant, working part-time, and raising a child as a single mom while in nursing school were some of the hardest years of my life — but the support of my classmates and faculty made all the difference. They believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself.”

From serving in post-revolutionary Nicaragua to working on gospel nonviolence internationally, Gerald Schlabach has lived to bring people together and build bridges.
After graduating from Goshen College in 1979, Schlabach began his career working with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in Central America, where he supported individuals navigating the dangers of public advocacy in Guatemala and Nicaragua. After nearly a decade with MCC, he returned stateside, where he first earned a master’s degree in theological studies from AnabaptistMennonite Biblical Seminary before earning a Ph.D. in theology and ethics from the University of Notre Dame in 1996.
After his graduate studies, Schlabach taught first at Bluffton College (now University) and then at the University of St. Thomas, where he specialized in theology, Christian social ethics, and peace studies. While at St. Thomas, Schlabach participated in multiple worldwide groups focused on peace and bridge-building, including directing the Bridgefolk grassroots movement for CatholicMennonite dialogue, serving in Rome with a Pax Christi International conference on just peace, and moderating and participating in multiple workshops.
“Gerald embodies and integrates life-faith-theology-service-ecumenism in local, national, and global context,” said one nominator for Schlabach, Weldon D. Nisley, former Mennonite

pastor in Cincinnati, Philadelphia and Seattle and a Benedictine oblate with Saint John’s Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota. “Gerald has shaped many lives for learning and formation as a brilliant teacher and passionate mentor of students and young people.”
Schlabach has written many award-winning books, as well as being awarded multiple grants and fellowships. In retirement, he just finished editing a memoir by his good friend from Guatemala about Blessed Stanley Rother, the first Catholic martyr from the United States. He
currently is writing a book on Catholic social teaching and peace through the lens of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
Along with his wife Joetta Handrich ’80, Schlabach alternates between Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala. They are the parents of two adult sons, Gabriel and Jacob ‘11. In his spare time, Schlabach enjoys bicycling and other outdoor activities, playing mandolin with a pick-up band, and, in his words, “living as an ordinary Christian.”

When Raj Biyani first arrived at Goshen College, one of the first things he was told was: “You will learn how to learn.” That ethos has shaped his journey ever since, fueling a career defined by innovation, leadership, mentorship and a lifelong curiosity.
Originally from Calcutta, Biyani came to Goshen College in 1988 to study computer science and accounting. He credits the faculty, friendships, and caring Goshen community with helping him thrive as an international student — and equipping him with the foundational skills that supported a 25-year career marked by reinvention and impact.
After graduating in 1992, Biyani went on to earn an MBA from the University of Chicago and completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard University. Biyani joined Microsoft in 1999, where he quickly established a reputation as a catalyst for innovation. He was awarded multiple U.S. and E.U. patents, and contributed as a thought leader by authoring or co-authoring 10 “Think Week” papers for Bill Gates. He also co-authored a book on enterprise cloud adoption published by McGraw-Hill.
From 2011 to 2016, Biyani served as managing director of Microsoft IT’s India operations — the company’s largest center outside the United States. Under his leadership, the team tripled quality, significantly boosted

productivity, and achieved 100% cloud certification. This transformation became the subject of a Harvard Business School case study.
In 2015, Biyani co-produced the documentary The Story of India and Its IT Industry, which aired on CNBC and reached an estimated 15 million viewers. That same year, he returned to Goshen College to deliver the keynote address at its 117th commencement ceremony.
“He is an outstanding human being, worthy of recognition,” said Salil
Dave, a director at Microsoft and one of Biyani’s nominators. “Raj is a man with a heart of gold who truly loves people.”
In recent years, Biyani has shifted his focus toward mentorship, serving on advisory boards and coaching business leaders across India and the United States. He has also immersed himself in the study of ancient Indian scriptures. A few years ago, Biyani, his spouse Aarti and their children Garima and Rohan relocated to India.

YOUNG ALUMNI SERVANT LEADERSHIP AWARDEES
Community Cultivators
Goshen, Indiana
How would Kate Friesen and Scott Kempf describe their work on Singletree Farm, a local flower farm that serves the Goshen area? Three simple words from Kempf: “It’s a joy.”
When Kempf graduated with a peace, justice and conflict studies major in 2011, three years before Friesen, he spent time serving with Mennonite Central Committee in Tucson, Arizona, where he worked at a food bank. From there, he spent the next three years in rural Georgia, with an organization called Jubilee Partners that welcomes and orients refugees to the United States.
There, he helped with land management, growing his love of the
land. In Friesen’s senior year, she and Kempf began dating, and she soon moved out to Georgia to join Kempf for a year of service.
In 2015, the couple moved back to Goshen, where Friesen took a job at Merry Lea Environmental Learning Center. A few years later, fellow GC graduate Phoebe Brubaker ’03 called her, asking if they would grow flowers for Brubaker’s CSA. Before long, Friesen and Kempf had started Singletree Farm, with Brubaker as their main client.
Brubaker moved away in 2019, but Singletree continued to grow into what it is today: a farm that caters local weddings, holidays and events, while also selling bouquets through their flower CSA program and at the Goshen Farmers Market.
“Their farm is not just a source of flowers but a place where faith meets
practice — where they live out values of humility, gratitude and service,” said Trisha Handrich ’11, a friend and gifts officer at Goshen College, who nominated Friesen and Kempf for the award. “By cultivating beauty through flowers and meaningful connections within their community, they demonstrate the power of small acts to create lasting peace and harmony.”
And “meaningful connections” are at the heart of their work. Friesen said that her favorite part of selling flowers isn’t catering weddings or quinceañeras — it’s the small transactions where people express care for others and themselves through buying a few flowers.
Friesen and Kempf live on their farm in Benton, just south of Goshen, with their two-year-old son Alden and their dog, Milo.

Passionate Sports Pioneer | Goshen, Indiana
Mary Hartzler was a dominant athlete at Goshen College in the late 1960s and remains dominant in 2025, reflecting a life of passionate learning and sportsmanship.
Originally from West Virginia, Hartzler transferred to Goshen from Eastern Mennonite College. She played on the women’s basketball and field hockey teams and also participated in volleyball and tennis before they were official varsity sports. In Hartzler’s two basketball seasons, the Maple Leafs had a perfect 18-0 record
under head coach Ruth Gunden, with victories over future Big Ten schools like Indiana, Purdue and Illinois.
After graduating, Hartzler taught junior high physical education and health in Elkhart for six years. She completed a four-year tool and die apprenticeship program in a tool and die shop in Bridgman, Michigan, and then in Columbus, Ohio. For 21 years, she led the Manufacturing Process Lab for the Industrial and Systems Engineering Department at The Ohio State University, teaching engineering
students and assisting students and professors with research projects.
Hartzler’s athletic journey never slowed. In 1995, she began competing at the USATF Masters-level and with the National Senior Games. Recently, at the World Masters Athletics Indoor Championship in March, Hartzler won the women’s 75-79 discus competition. She has also broken records as a member on 4x200-meter relay teams.
Hartzler has consistently served others and bettered herself throughout her life — in the lab and in athletics.
Tony Janzen has been a servant leader and a global citizen, with soccer weaving through it all.
Janzen attended and played soccer at Elkhart Central High School before coming to Goshen College and competing for the Maple Leafs men’s soccer team from 2004-2007. The Leafs won 55 games over those four years, and in 2006 the team made the NAIA national tournament for the first time in nearly 30 years. A physical education major, Janzen made the all-conference team three
years in a row and was an NAIA AllAmerican Honorable Mention twice. Since the turn of the century, he has scored more goals than any other Goshen men’s soccer player. He was an assistant coach for the Leafs from 2009-2011.
In 2013, Tony and his wife, Denise Reesor, worked with Mennonite Central Committee in Cambodia for three years. He played professionally for a year while he was there in the top-level Cambodian league, scoring 13 goals.

Janzen came back to Goshen and was the assistant boys soccer coach and head junior varsity coach at Bethany Christian Schools for three seasons before becoming the varsity head coach in 2020. The 2023 Bruins team won the state championship, resulting in the school’s first state title in any sport. Janzen has been a teacher at Goshen Community Schools Alternative High School since 2016.
Tony and Denise currently reside in Goshen, with their newborn, Cedric.
DR. ROMAN GINGERICH CHAMPION OF CHARACTER AWARDEE

BY DAN KOOP LIECHTY ‘88, PH.D. director of alumni engagement & international student adviser
SINCE 1910, most graduates from Goshen College have signed a heavy leather-bound graduation registry. This tradition continues today as the book and a lamp are moved annually to the Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center for commencement.
The Class of 2020 was back on campus for Homecoming to celebrate their five-year reunion. Since they were only able to have a virtual ceremony during the pandemic, we planned a special celebration for them. The event included a mini commencement ceremony, including the chance to sign the graduation registry while wearing graduation regalia. The graduates who planned this ceremony with us expressed how important it was for them to be able to be part of this tradition.
This was a reminder to me of the importance of rituals and traditions. Like our applause tunnels that start and end our academic year, signing the registry is a significant ritual that connects us to our alma mater. Unfortunately, the members of the class of 2020 were not the only graduates who have not had a chance to sign the registry. We’re not exactly sure why, but the tradition took a pause between 1980 and 1994. When Lois Bare `79, former director of alumni relations, revived the tradition in 1995, she wisely left some pages blank so that those class members could sign it at a later date.
Some graduates of those missing years have taken the opportunity to sign the book when they are in town and others just like to come by our office and see their own or a loved ones signature in the registry. If you are on campus and you never signed the book, you are most welcome to stop by the alumni office and sign it. If you want to see your signature, or maybe your parent’s or grandparent’s signature, you are also welcome to stop by the office. It really is a wonderful piece of Goshen College history and tradition that connects Goshen College alumni across generations.

BY ERIC BRADLEY head librarian, Mennonite Historical Library
IN 1939 a new health care center opened on campus. Built as an annex to the north end of Kulp Hall, this six-bed facility included a laboratory, consultation room and examination room.
Dr. H. Clair Amstutz ’33 served as College Physician along with his duties as a professor in the Department of Biology and Health, and Marian (Kauffman) Jones ’41 and Wade Jones ’41 served as College Nurses. Marian, a 1930 graduate of La Junta (Colo.) Mennonite School of Nursing, came to Goshen College along with her husband Wade to complete their bachelor’s degrees. Along with their nursing roles, Marian taught physical education courses and Wade participated in the Adelphian Literary
Society. For one semester in their tenure, The Record featured a funnies column attributed (correctly or not) to the Joneses called “Keeping up with the Joneses,” which playfully poked at the couple as well as others on campus.
Together, Wade and Marian played a hand in the newly formed Nurses’ Club, where registered nurses who were students at GC, along with Mennonite RNs in the community, could connect with one another and promote interest in public health across campus. Six students of the class of 1941 came into college as nurses. The Nurses’ Club included graduates of La Junta (CO), Mennonite School of Nursing and Goshen Hospital’s Laura A. Kindig School of Nursing.
After graduation, the Joneses returned to Colorado, then after the conclusion of World War II worked in Maryland, Kansas and California with the Mental Health Services Committee of Mennonite Central Committee. Indeed, it was a challenge to keep up with the Joneses.
The inaugural nursing class of 1953: Back row: Ruth Beard, Florence (Rheinheimer) Harnish, Margaret (Brubacher) Ashley, Charlotte (Hertzler) Croyle Front row: Lois (Shank) Musselman, Leona (Yoder) Baker, Mary Kay Sauder, Elnora (Weaver) Voth The instructor with them is Orpah Mosemann, director of nursing.

“This is my commandment: love each other just as I have loved you.”
JOHN 15:12

In 1981, Associate Professor of Art John Mishler ’79 collaborated with students to create the Broken Shield sculpture in the center of campus. It was inspired by Isaiah 2:4, which anticipates an age of peace when nations will “beat their swords into plowshares.” Since then, the bright red-orange iconic sculpture has become a regular gathering place for prayer, peace vigils and expressions of our mission that includes “active love for God and neighbor.”
