LiberalityàlaMode: FashionDuringPoliticalChange

In times of significant economic and political change (most commonly with the introduction of a new Labour government) great changes in fashion trends follow closely alongside, primarily in youth culture The first major instance of this was in the 1960s.

On the 16th of October 1964, the country said goodbye to its formerly Conservative ruling party and welcomed Harold Wilson. Due to the socioeconomic and societal damages caused by the Second World War wearing off almost entirely, employment rates were at a high, women had more rights than ever before with the introduction of the hormonal pill, homosexuality was decriminalised, and teenagerhood began to take shape In previous decades, teenagers were viewed primarily as young adults, but the sixties saw this idea almost completely eradicated. This led to youth culture developing and youth fashion taking shape, such as the mini skirt, go-go dresses, mod haircuts, the bob and pixie cut gaining popularity, and an overall liberality in terms of what was deemed acceptable daily attire. The shift in public attitude allowed for innovative design to become available to the masses creating a style revolution.

The mods (an abbreviation of ‘Modernists’) popularised sleek silhouettes, shorter dresses and skirts, vibrant colours and unconventional hair and designs never seen before, influencing some of the great bands from the decade such as The Beatles, The Who, and The Rolling Stones Some notable fashion influencers from the decade include Twiggy, John Lennon, Jane Birkin, and Jimi Hendrix.

After a four-year slip into another conservative government, Harold Wilson and James Callaghan returned for the 1970s, the punk-disco revolution. Taking a reductionist approach, the 1970s subcultures can be split into the mainstream disco and the alternative punk subcultures, but an overall consensus would show that hair became bigger, shoes became higher, jeans became wider and more ripped, and music took a sharp turn.

LiberalityàlaMode: FashionDuringPoliticalChange

The pop-rock of the 1960s was hit by a giant swinging disco ball from over the pond in the US, causing a shift in band identities such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, who both began to rock mullets, sideburns, and bellbottoms Disco influences led to men’s and women’s fashion beginning to merge, with women’s options in terms of trousers becoming widespread. The pop-rock and disco crowds sported Vneck collars, platform sandals, boots, and heels, denim galore, and tessellating flower patterns. Meanwhile, in the anti-mainstream punk subcultures, designers such as Vivienne Westwood and bands such as the X-Ray Spex and the Sex Pistols popularised styles such as bondage wear as everyday attire, body modifications, and liberty spikes. The 70s had no shortage of options for both the rebellious youth and the mainstream.

Following the long and heinous stint of Margeret Thatcher, on the 2nd of May 1997, Tony Blair came into power, with the Britpop movement following alongside him. Tony Blair used the youth vote to his strength, as there was heavy tension among the youth following Thatcher’s destruction of youth culture. Britpop was a musical movement, powered by bands such as Oasis, The Stone Roses, Pulp, and Lush, who brought back many styles from the 1960s along with an array of new trends. Brands such as Fred Perry gave rise to the tight-fitting polo tee, often paired with a baggy pair of acid-wash denim jeans.

The 1980s saw the invention of the tracksuit, which was made baggier, and better in the decade following. The 1960s mod parka jacket was repopularised by Oasis’s Liam Gallagher and The Stone Roses Ian Brown While men’s fashion seemed to dominate, women’s fashion saw the introduction of ladette culture, or thuggette culture as the Daily Mail coined it. Ladette culture first came on the rise in 1997 with a phenomenon of what was then considered ‘boisterous, bolshy, boozy’ behaviour from women in the public eye, when it was in reality the merging of lines between what is acceptable behaviour from men and women. The fashion that came alongside ladette culture included tank tops with low-rise baggy jeans, a pixie cut or bob (preferably bleached blonde) and a cigarette to hand

While this is just the beginning of the new labour government, there are already new trends on the horizon and massive shifts in youth culture, so here is to the next four years!

PoliticalOpinion:ASummerof ChangeandUnrest

On 5th July 2024, the general election changed lives: the Labour government gained power after so many years of Conservative reign. With this, came the inevitable reverberation throughout society

The Labour government came a plan: to change things and stop the conservative chaos This ambitious plan included: to deliver economic stability; cut NHS waiting times; to launch a new Border Security Command; set up Great British Energy; crack down on antisocial behaviour and recruit 6,500 new teachers These hopeful promises were what arguably won the Labour government the electionso why the resulting social unrest

Social unrest was promoted through different facets, especially throughout the summer, in which temperatures run hot and so temperaments too It started with a catalyst: the fatal stabbing of three young girls in the sleepy town of Southport. This outrage lead to violence, fuelled by misinformation online supporting and legitimising preexisting extreme-right and antiimmigration viewpoints The riots, at their peak, were thousands strong. This then transformed into “marauding mobs on the streets of Southport” (Sir Keir Starmer, Prime Minister), in which people insighted violence, with 27 police officers taken to hospital

PoliticalOpinion:ASummerof ChangeandUnrest

The growing dislike of the Labour government has only grown with the confirmation of the winter fuel payments being scraped, with the excuse of it being ‘necessary’ to fill the financial ‘black hole’ left by the previous Conservative government. Many have their criticisms online with the creation of many petitions to reverse the decision, and save the winter fuel payment, specifically for pensioners who need it most. This shows society’s support for each other in these conditions, remnant of COVID times Furthermore, people have gone to news stations such as the BBC to promote the need for these payments, especially with the cost of living crisis alongside inflation, reminding those that all the essentials ‘adds up’ (Erik, interviewed by the BBC). his furthers the blame game that the government plays with each party as it blames its predecessor for its current failings. Starmer’s recent blame is the £22b ‘black hole’ left by the Conservatives.

The audit published by the Treasury at the end of July was responsible for this figure, which also outlined areas of public spending which are already set to go over budget such as, public sector pay rises, spending on large projects, and unforeseen costs like inflation being higher than expected. However, many would argue Starmer calculation of this financial ‘black hole’ should not excuse the cuts of essentials Naturally, Starmer has blamed Sunak, calling on him to ‘apologise for the £22b black hole’. This is not dissimilar to Starmer’s stance on the NHS, with Starmer finding that changes to the NHS were ‘hopelessly misconceived’, leaving the NHS itself in an ‘awful position’ from ‘years and years of Conservative failure’ (Daisy Cooper, health spokesperson for the Liberal Democrats). This narrative positions him as a saviour for the NHS, excusing his neglect of other aspects. Although, priorities must be established, even if it is at the detriment to those who need it most.

It is important to expose the ways in which the government attempt to distract us from the bigger picture of how they use our tax money. We cannot afford to be left defenceless, and, despite much of politics feeling like we have to choose the better of a bad bunch, keeping ourselves informed and asking the difficult questions will help us make the right choice, and demand better. Ultimately, we have to pose the question: how long can Labour keep blaming the Tories?

USElection:TheDangerofFake News

Mindlessly scrolling through social media, you suddenly receive a ‘latest news’ notification prompting you to click on it. Your screen lights up with a shocking headline and is accompanied by a heated debate in a live chat room. Across the corridor you hear your sister calling her friends, filling them in on this seemingly hot gossip Yet somethings not quite right the information you just read clashes with what you thought you knew about the topic. ‘It’s fine’ - you think to yourself -‘so what if the its disinformation; it’s not my problem’ But what if it was?

What appears to be trivial lunchtime gossip for some may be life altering for others. The recent wave of false claims targeting Haitian immigrants in the US shows just how dangerous the spreading of disinformation can be. During a recent political debate, Donald Trump falsely claimed Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were “eating the pets of the people that live there” this outrageous statement automatically going viral and stoking xenophobia and racial hatred. As other political figures jumped on board, amplifying the disinformation across right-wing platforms, what began as a baseless accusation turned into bomb threats that closed schools and city halls in Springfield.

In instances like these, it’s easy to think ‘That’s over in America; it doesn’t affect me’ But here's why it matters: false information thrives on platforms we use every day. Whether it's about immigrants in Ohio or (false info from UK), when lies are reinforced enough, people start to believe and internalise them. They shape our opinions, divide our communities, and at their worst can incite real-world violence.

The lesson is simple but vital: we all play a role in stopping the spread of false information. Every time we share a post, we contribute to the ripple effect of that information - whether it's true or false. As students, we ' re often told to think critically in school, but its just as important to apply that skill online. Before hitting 'share' on a post that stirs up emotions or confirms your biases, take a moment Ask: Where is this information coming from? Who benefits from me believing this? Have I checked the facts? We're part of a generation that revolves around social media, but with this comes responsibility. When false information spreads unchecked, it can incite real harm - just like in Springfield.

TheChronicDeclineofCinema

2024 is not a year likely to go down in history as a monumental time for cinema. Unfortunately, these past few years are starting to feel like it’s the same production studios popping out sequel after remake after adaptation, with very little space for independent films -that don’t have a budget in the hundreds of millions- to thrive.

The success of the Barbenheimer double feature last summer was a triumph for cinemas, raking in mountains of revenue, but that level of footfall couldn’t be maintained. Similar to Avengers: Endgame in 2019, cinemas experienced a huge spike as the movie of the decade was released, but then viewers lost interest in the rest of the marvel franchise afterwards

Streaming services like Netflix and Disney Plus were a lifesaver during the pandemic when everyone was bored at home, and we could all watch latest releases from the comfort of our sofa. However four years later, streaming is one of the biggest threats to cinema. In the case of Disney Plus, most of the new films coming out (which are owned by the Disney conglomerate) premiere on the streaming service during or instead of its theatrical run. This tactic formed part of the outrage about the SAG-AFRA writers and actors strike Because streaming services are making millions, but are failing to actually fairly pay the creatives that they employ. Another reason was that many creative jobs are simply being given to AI Although AI at the moment can only use specific prompts to generate either nightmarish images or scarily robotic dialogue scripts, this tool is getting better and better every day, and it seems that creative jobs are first on the chopping block

TheChronicDeclineofCinema TheQuarterlyGazette

So think about it; what was the last film you saw in cinemas? It may have been Inside Out 2, or Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Wolverine, or his wife Blake Lively’s It Ends With Us The pattern here, is that all of those are sequels and adaptations. Or maybe Avatar 2? Or Despicable Me 4? Or Dune Part 2?

This list could be pages long but the problem is clear: Cinema and film is a dying art. Not every film has to be Oscar-worthy, but at the very least people want to start seeing some new stories. Cinema-goers are tired of the same animated Disney movie they saw years ago now being live action, or seeing a terrible, unfaithful, adaptation of their favourite game or movie, or a classic action movie having thousands of bland and unrelated spin-offs. Speaking of classic action movies, you may have seen some buzz about the new movie The Crow, starring FKA Twigs and Bill Skarsgård. Except it it’s not a new film, instead a remake of a cult classic 1994 film, starring Bruce Lee’s son, Brandon Lee. The movie gained a legendary status due to the death of Brandon Lee whilst filming, as Brandon was shot with a prop gun near the end of filming. Most of his scenes were finished and his stuntman was able to stand in for the ones that weren’t, meaning the film was released as planned, and catapulted the film into the spotlight The Gothic atmosphere of the film was mirrored by the off-screen tragedy, so naturally many fans assumed that out of respect for Brandon and the movie itself, the story would be left alone.

However producers and investors saw the success of the first movies and decided to pump out whatever they could using the Crow name to squeeze some more profit out of it The 2024 version is a direct remake, but is the fourth in a line of spin-offs of the original. The crew of the original movie refused to watch it out of respect for Brandon, with the director Alex Proyascalling it a “cynical-cash grab”. Almost satisfyingly, it has been panned by critics due to its inability to even match the quality and feel of the original, as well as becoming a box-office bomb. Although this happens time and time again, production studios continue to choose profit over art and actual joy. So please go support your local cinema, or go watch something new.

LITERARY REVIEW

ADarkerShadeofMagicbyV.E. Schwab

After a brief break from reading, I’ve found myself diving back into the literary world – this time into the hands of V.E. Schwab with her fantasy novel A Darker Shade of Magic. As the first book of her best-selling trilogy, it is a striking testament to her skill of a storyteller. Fantasy has always been one of my favourite genres and this novel was a perfect reminder of why I love it so much.

“I'dratherdieonanadventure thanlivestandingstill.”

The novel makes a point of establishing the vast magical realm that surrounds the characters: it is as if I have stepped into the pages of the book itself Schwab’s novel focuses on four parallel Londons, each different in their own way. Grey London is where everything is mundane and magicless; Red London is where magic is worshipped and lives thrive; White London is where chaos ensues and people battle for the scarce magic that is left; and Black London is a place that was destroyed centuries ago and where magic has consumed everyone. Each London is unique and Schwab’s eloquently crafted descriptions bring them to life.

One of the most interesting things that intrigued me about this novel was the form and structure Schwab introduces multiple perspectives of different characters that you may only meet for a few pages, yet she manages to establish a backstory for each and every one of them a few pages before. As a result, when you encounter them again you find out just why they’ve been introduced and the importance they hold towards the plot. This clever narrative allows her to intertwine all the characters with each other, showing how even the parallel universes are tightly woven together

LITERARY REVIEW

ADarkerShadeofMagicbyV.E. Schwab

The protagonist, Kell, is an Antari, who are increasingly rare people born with magic in their blood and the ability to travel between universes His character is intricately written, with every aspect of his personality layered. There is nothing too hidden nor too exposed. Schwab has the fascinating talent of shaping complex characters that each take you into their own story. Her world building – perhaps I should I say four-worlds-at-once building – is spellbinding and her dedication to setting up the backdrop where the story takes place is clear Her focus on Kell, Holland and Lila highlight her skill at writing fully developed characters that each have their own story, in their own London, and eventually all tie together. While reading I couldn’t help but feel attached to them: it felt like I had met them in real life

While the story might seem slow to start off with, that is just Schwab’s way of fully immersing you into her world The plot comes in the latter half of the novel, however this feels like a natural progression At the heart of the story is a smuggled artifact from Black London, which threatens the existence of all the Londons, and Kell must find a way to get it back to where it belongs

“Magic wastrulya beautiful disease.”
“Thepeoplefedonthe magicandthemagic fedonthemuntilitate theirbodiesandtheir mindsandthentheir souls.”

However, when he meets the sharptongued pickpocket Delilah Bard – better known as Lila – they must navigate through their perilous journey together The story’s antagonists, the Dane twins who rule White London, are written in a way that perfectly encapsulates their psychopathic nature They’re ruthless and greedy for power, making them the best villains.

I don’t think I have read something so beautifully written in a long time; Schwab knows how to utilise her skills as a writer phenomenally well. Her intricate plot, as well as the mesmerising world-building, makes this novel a standout I simply cannot wait to return into this world, and will be sure to read the next two soon.

MusicWindDown

As the summer has come to an end and autumn is in the air, the weather isn’t the only thing that sees significant changes We have seen a vast change in the music charts, with Charli XCX’s summer album “BRAT”, and Sabrina Carpenters latest releases gradually moving down, however, “Espresso” still comfortably remains at the top for the 22nd week in a row.

Although they have continued to remain extremely popular, and will continue to for many weeks to come, there has also been a rise in more “autumnal” music. Tracks such as “Linger” by The Cranberries, and “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac have rightfully re-entered the charts, slowly making their way up and surpassing artists such as Ice Spice and Central Cee, and Fred again The decline of these artists could be due to festival season coming to an end, as they headlined festivals such as Reading and Leeds, as well as Wireless, which are some of the top festivals in the UK.

In terms of new and upcoming music, an album that has struck my personal interest this month is “Romance” by Fontaines D.C. I find the album to be a prime example of modern Indie/Alternative Rock as its unique, distinctive, and inspiring sound represents a bold, stylistic evolution for the band The lead single “Starburster” is a reflection of this as it presents the band at their most electrifying and experimental to date Could this album transform the future of Indie Rock?

TheQuarterlyGazette MusicWindDown

As a result of both Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX kicking off their new album tours, many eyes have turned to their latest releases, which have gained popularity primarily through TikTok, as it seems to have the largest impact on our generations music preferences. We have also seen a rise in the number of steams of Oasis songs recently as a result of the Gallagher brothers deciding to finally reunite after 16 years, and tour in 2025

TopPicksforSeptember:

Charm by Clairo Charm has gained popularity over the summer, specific tracks such as ‘Juna’, ‘Sexy to Someone’, and ‘Nomad’, have circulated on TikTok recently This album is very soft, mature and reflects how Clairo has progressed as a mainstream artist.

So Tonight That I Might See by Mazzy Star

The latest live album release from Mazzy Star has led me to reflect on my personal favourite, their 2nd album, ‘So Tonight That I Might See’. Every autumn, I return to this album as the melancholic, alternative melodies reflect the transition into colder weather.

Memoir of a Sparklemuffin by Suki Waterhouse

Suki Watehouse’s new release is the perfect album as we leave summer. My personal favourite track from the album is ‘To Love’. This album really establishes Suki’s distinctive sound, and can hopefully draw more attention to her as an artist.

COMING UP IN CREATIVE ARTS

Musical2024:Charlieandthe ChocolateFactory

Setting off on a candy-filled, astonishing adventure, the Creative Arts department’s ‘Charlie And The Chocolate Factory Musical’ rehearsals are in full swing. Efforts across the board led director Mr Olden to describe the casts biggest strength as ‘Their togetherness and enthusiasm.’ This is Mr Olden’s sixth Senior production he has directed, and he would say that this has ‘definitely been the most positive and productive start we have had to rehearsals. When you have such a passionate and dedicated cast, it’s amazing how much can get done in one hour’ Highlights from the cast from rehearsals include: ‘Experimenting with character choices’, ‘Preseason with the script read-through, headshots and getting to know one and another’, and ‘Singing such silly but witty songs with a brilliant group of people’

Gordon’s production of the Roald Dahl classic has an intriguing mix of the original story of ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ with a few modern twists for a contemporary audience. It fully embraces the original characters and all of their quirks and faults and absolutely embraces Roald Dahl’s dark undertones throughout As you can imagine, with flying glass elevators, exploding children, chocolate rivers and dancing squirrels, Mr Olden remarks there are quite a few technical problems the team need to solve! But no task is matched compared to the mighty group, with amazing vocal coaches, passionate dance professionals as well as an indescribable director, this musical will be one to remember.

COMING UP IN CREATIVE ARTS

Musical2024:Charlieandthe ChocolateFactory

With the quality of the school’s musicals improving every year, Mr Olden feels the team reach a point annually where they think they can’t go any ‘bigger’ or ‘better’ However, Mr Olden explains he loves a challenge and describes the most enjoyable moments in planning a production being finding new ways to surprise and move audiences. He highlights ‘My job, of course, is made very easy by getting to work with some incredibly talented students who wholeheartedly trust the process from start to finish’. Mr Olden’s attention to detail through working refined character ‘journeys’ allow the students to develop their interpretations with the finer things in mind To sum up, Mr Olden believes the musical is, in short, ‘Quirky, funky and loveable!’. A great excitement had built within the cast and team for the audience to see Gordon’s interpretation of the classic children’s story: ‘Hopefully, there will be some real moments of illusion and magic with some nice little surprises up our sleeve!’.

Yet, the Creatives Arts department never stop! They will shortly be announcing Gordon’s KS3 Musical, which you can audition for before Christmas. With over 70 students in the production of ‘Oliver Jr!’ last year, the team are really looking forward to working with some new performers!
