THE IMPERATIVE OF HOLISTIC PUBLIC POLICY TO MAINTAINING GLOBAL COMPETITIVENESS When it comes to public policy in Canada one might rightly ask if we are presently living in the age of wanting to have our cake and eat it too. Certainly, when it comes to innovation, not a single government in Canada has not at the very least expressed their interest in hosting a strong biotechnology sector within their jurisdiction. Indeed, many have gone further and put in place strategic plans to support and drive innovation. This is all very important and welcome. However, these investments and strategies can all be for naught if other policy departments beyond those with direct responsibility for innovation are not also engaged in the development of public policy impacting the sector.

The Canadian biotechnology ecosystem is one of this country’s great strengths.

Stretching from coast-to-coast, the ecosystem is built upon clusters located in every province. Each cluster is comprised of a network of early stage companies, research institutes, hospitals, investors and post-secondary institutions with Canada’s capacity for strong science and research grounding each.

In the past few months alone there have been several very significant investments and advancements in the sector. To highlight just a few: Zucara, a spin-out company from The Centre for Drug Research and Development (CDRD) and MaRS Innovation, received $3.9M for their research into advancing a diabetes therapeutic; PEI’s BioVectra

announced a $5M investment to expand its operations into Windsor, Nova Scotia; Sanofi announced a $500M investment to expand its Toronto vaccine development and manufacturing capacity; and, Pfizer invested nearly $2M in MaRS Innovation to support technologies that enable health sciences research and the CDRD Academy’s Executive Institute program which is focused on ensuring the Canadian life sciences sector has access to top management talent.

This growth and a positive investment climate represent very encouraging signs for the industry. Maintaining this momentum will be absolutely critical over the period ahead as Canada competes with other jurisdictions to attract investment and talent.

Importantly, understanding the ecosystem and developing public policy that reflects the whole ecosystem should be a priority for governments at all levels. Certainly, the ecosystem’s hubs and various interconnected components within those hubs renders difficult the public policy process overseeing the sector. When one layers onto that the multiple cogs of a connected ecosystem, broader public policy objectives become inherently more complex to undertake.

Recognizing this interconnected reality, policy developed with an eye on only one part of the ecosystem can have significant and detrimental, albeit unintended, consequences for one or more other parts of the ecosystem.

Conversely, a holistic public policy development approach can achieve multiple objectives and ensure the global competitiveness of the industry.

Ultimately, with the right domestic hosting conditions in place to support innovation and attract investment, Canada is well-positioned to be a leader in the global bio-economy and capitalize on the enormous opportunity population growth and a changed and changing environment presents.

In this context, the spring issue of insights is focused on ‘Canada Going Global’, exploring how Canada’s biotech industry is a unique ecosystem reflective of the new product development pipeline of today, where large companies partner with, or invest in, emerging domestic innovators. It is these partnerships and investments from NEOMED (page 12) to Genome Canada (page 42) and the University of Waterloo (page 52) that are developing transformational change in response to a global economy in search of solutions.

NÉCESSITÉ DES POLITIQUES PUBLIQUES GLOBALES POUR MAINTENIR LA COMPÉTITIVITÉ MONDIALE Sur le plan des politiques publiques au Canada, on pourrait se demander à juste titre si on ne se trouve pas à une période où on cherche à avoir le beurre et l’argent du beurre. Il est clair que, en matière d’innovation, il n’y pas un seul gouvernement au Canada qui n’a pas au moins exprimé l’intérêt d’avoir sur son territoire un secteur de la biotechnologie solide. De fait, bon nombre sont allés jusqu’à mettre en place des plans stratégiques pour soutenir et stimuler l’innovation. Bien qu’importants et louables, ces investissements et stratégies s’avèrent cependant futiles si d’autres sphères de politiques au-delà de celles directement liées à l’innovation ne sont pas également incluses dans l’élaboration de politiques publiques touchant le secteur.

L’écosystème des biotechnologies au Canada constitue l’une des grandes forces du pays. Aux quatre coins du Canada, cet écosystème repose sur un réseau de sociétés en phase de démarrage, d’instituts de recherche, d’hôpitaux, d’investisseurs et d’établissements d’enseignement postsecondaires qui ont de solides capacités scientifiques fondées sur la recherche.

Dans les quelques derniers mois seulement, il y a eu plusieurs gros investissements et de grandes percés dans le secteur, notamment : Zucara, une société issue du Centre for Drug Research and Development (CDRD) et de MaRS Innovation, a reçu 3,9 millions

de dollars pour faire avancer la recherche sur le traitement du diabète; BioVectra de l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard a annoncé un investissement de 5 millions de dollars pour élargir ses activités à Windsor (Nouvelle-Écosse); Sanofi a annoncé un investissement de 500 millions de dollars dans une installation de développement et de fabrication de vaccins à Toronto; et Pfizer a investi près de 2 millions de dollars dans MaRS Innovation pour soutenir des technologies qui permettent la recherche en sciences de la santé et l’Institut des cadres de la CDRD Academy qui veille à ce que le secteur des sciences de la vie du Canada ait accès à des cadres de haut niveau.

Cette croissance alliée à un climat favorable aux investissements est très prometteuse pour l’industrie. Il faudra absolument maintenir la cadence pour la période à venir puisque le Canada doit rivaliser avec d’autres compétences pour attirer des investissements et des personnes de talent. Surtout, les gouvernements de tous les ordres doivent se donner comme priorité de comprendre l’écosystème et d’élaborer des politiques publiques qui sont le reflet de cet écosystème en entier. Les pôles de l’écosystème et les diverses composantes interreliées au sein de ces pôles compliquent certes l’élaboration de politiques publiques régissant le secteur. En revanche, l’élaboration de politiques publiques dans une perspective globale peut atteindre de multiples objectifs et assurer la compétitivité de l’industrie sur le marché mondial. À terme, si les conditions intérieures favorisent

l’innovation et attirent des investissements, le Canada sera bien placé pour être une figure de proue de la bioéconomie mondiale et pour miser sur les très grandes occasions que présentent la croissance de la population et un milieu en mutation.

Dans un tel contexte, le numéro du printemps d’insights s’articule autour du thème « Visée mondiale canadienne » et explore comment le secteur de la biotechnologie du Canada est un écosystème unique qui est le reflet des nouveaux projets de développement d’aujourd’hui, où de grandes sociétés s’associent à des innovateurs émergents d’ici ou investissent en ceux-ci. Ce sont ces partenariats et investissements, de NEOMED (p. 12) à Génome Canada (p. 42) et à l’Université Waterloo (p. 52), qui conduisent à un changement transformationnel en réaction à une économie mondiale à la recherche de solutions. biotech.ca

NEOMED VISION: To be the partner of choice for Canadian universities and early-stage biotechnology companies to advance and commercialize their innovative science programs and to facilitate the development of the Canadian Life Sciences industry by providing an enabling ecosystem built around its R&D infrastructure and services.

NEOMED WAS BORN IN 2012 WITH THE CLOSURE OF ASTRAZENECA’S R&D CENTER IN MONTREAL. Supported by AstraZeneca, Pfizer Canada and the Government of Quebec, the NEOMED Institute was launched to retain and provide opportunity for an exceptional life sciences talent pool and a state-of-the-art research facility for the benefit of the Canadian Life Sciences ecosystem.

NEOMED acquired a second R&D site, from their partner GlaxoSmithKline in 2015, and were named and funded as a federal Centre for Commercialization and Research (CECR) in 2014.

Today, the not-for-profit NEOMED Institute operates two complementary business divisions: NEOMED Therapeutics which bridges innovative academic research with the needs of the pharmaceutical industry by providing industry-leading project management expertise and financing capacity; and the NEOMED Innovation Center which operates two Montreal-based drug development centres that provide their commercial tenants with access to state-of-the-art laboratories and equipment and essential drug development services. After 5 years of operation, the Institute has successfully in-licensed 9 therapeutic programs, commercialized three therapeutic programs and the NEOMED Innovation Center has grown to host 30 local and international companies employing over 450 people.

NEOMED INNOVATION CENTER – A WORLD-CLASS FACILITY THAT IS EXPANDING The NEOMED Innovation Center, operates two sites (Montreal Technoparc and the Cité de la Biotech in Laval) that were purposely built to support small molecule and biologic drug development, with state-of-the-art chemistry, biology and in vivo pharmacology laboratories and equipment. Tenant companies have shared access to many different types of equipment and services catering to their needs and delivered by NEOMED Innovation Center’s professional staff. This combination of laboratories, equipment and services has created a truly unique life sciences ecosystem that favors and fosters innovation and collaboration between resident companies at the NEOMED Innovation Center where they work side-by-side.

With a current occupancy rate approaching 100%, the NEOMED Innovation Center has announced a new 100,000 square foot expansion project at the Ville St. Laurent Technoparc site. This new project, will deliver turn-key chemistry, biology and life sciences office space in the Fall of 2019. The first 50,000 square feet phase of this two-phase project will be built adjacent to NEOMED’s existing facility in Ville St. Laurent and will be connected to the existing building by a covered walkway, allowing their new tenants easy access to the shared services, cafeteria and meeting rooms.

NEOMED Innovation Center’s expansion will also feature a modern co-working business centre, adapted to the needs of the evolving NEOMED life sciences ecosystem. Their tenant visitors, consultants, biotechnology and service company workers seeking a pay-as-you-go working environment will find desks, offices, IT services and conference rooms all located within one of Canada’s most dynamic life science clusters.

On the completion of Phase 1 of their new expansion project, the NEOMED Innovation Center will host more than 200 new highly skilled scientists, technicians and professionals!

CENTRE D’INNOVATION NÉOMED – UNE INFRASTRUCTURE DE CALIBRE MONDIAL EN CROISSANCE Le Centre d’innovation NÉOMED opère deux sites (au Technoparc de Montréal et dans la Cité de la Biotech à Laval) qui ont été construits pour soutenir le développement de solutions thérapeutiques basées sur des petites molécules et sur des produits biologiques, grâce à des laboratoires et des équipements de pointe en chimie, biologie et pharmacologie.

Les entreprises locataires partagent l’accès à de nombreux équipements et services répondant à leurs besoins et fournis par les professionnels aguerris du centre d’innovation. Cette combinaison de laboratoires, d’équipements et de services a créé un écosystème unique en sciences de la vie qui favorise l’innovation et la collaboration entre les compagnies résidentes du Centre d’innovation NÉOMED, qui travaillent régulièrement en étroite collaboration.

Avec un taux d’occupation actuel proche de 100%, le centre d’innovation a annoncé un projet d’agrandissement de 100 000 pieds carrés supplémentaires sur le site du Technoparc de Ville Saint-Laurent. Ce nouveau bâtiment fournira dès l’automne 2019, des laboratoires clé en main pour la chimie, la biologie ainsi que des bureaux pour les professionnels du secteur des sciences de la vie. La première phase de 50 000 pieds carrés de ce projet en deux phases sera adjacente à l’édifice existant, tous deux reliés par une passerelle couverte, permettant aux nouveaux locataires d’accéder facilement aux services partagés, à la cafétéria et aux salles de réunion.

L’expansion du Centre d’innovation NÉOMED comprendra aussi un centre de travail collaboratif adapté à l’évolution des besoins de cet écosystème. Les visiteurs des entreprises locataires, les consultants et les collaborateurs de sociétés de biotechnologie et de service pourront ainsi louer des bureaux dans un espace de travail commun, des bureaux fermés et

NEOMED THERAPEUTICS - A DRIVER OF THE GROWTH OF THE CANADIAN BIOTECHNOLOGY SECTOR NEOMED Therapeutics’ passion is to identify and advance leading edge scientific discoveries from some of Canada’s strongest researchers. NEOMED will transform these programs to the stage where they can be successfully commercialized for the benefit of the inventor, NEOMED and Canada. NEOMED’s business model is semi-virtual where experienced, pharmaceutical-trained project managers define a project plan, clear go/no go decision points and fund and manage the program to advance it to a stage where successful commercialization is possible. All development work is outsourced, often including some of the tenant companies within the NEOMED Innovation Center.

In just five years, NEOMED Therapeutics has completed its first Phase 2 human proof-of-concept clinical trial with NEO6860 in a pain indication, out-licensed two of its programs to for-profit biotechnology companies and recently announced its first spin-off, for-profit company to advance its promising epigenetics oncology platform through multiple human clinical trials.

Viral outbreaks can be the stuff of nightmares for entire populations; Canada alone has seen the ramifications of avian flu and SARS. Recently, the Zika virus has been a major focus, as its effects have been seen in Brazil and elsewhere, with thousands of children suffering from microcephaly due to the Zika infection.

It’s also been a box office sensational genre; films like I Am Legend and Contagion which focus on viral outbreaks are responsible for more than $2.8B in revenue over the last 20 years alone. But according to Dr. Qadir, Hollywood has missed the bigger, human story.

However timely, entertaining or newsworthy an epidemic virus can be, Dr. Qadir notes that there are hundreds of thousands of people currently in hospitals around the world waiting for a diagnosis that may never come, due to limited time and testing. It is these situations that first inspired Dr. Qadir to seek new routes for identifying viruses.

of Pioneering Science in Neurology An interview with Biogen Canada General Manager, Marina Vasiliou

BIOGEN IS CELEBRATING A SIGNIFICANT MILESTONE WITH ITS 40TH ANNIVERSARY IN 2018. Founded in 1978 as one of the world’s first global biotechnology companies

by Nobel Prize winning scientists, Biogen has been a leader in innovative scientific research aiming to defeat devastating neurological diseases.

“Our focus has been on neurology because we believe that no other disease area holds as much promise for medical breakthroughs. With such significant unmet need in this space, Biogen is uniquely positioned to provide innovative solutions for patients, thanks to our solid foundation in neurology,” says Marina Vasiliou, General Manager of Biogen Canada.

She notes that millions of people around the world are affected by Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), and many people also suffer from less common diseases such as Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).

The company also seeks partnerships with scientific leaders around the world in an effort to advance medical research.

In Canada Biogen has forged partnerships with the Montreal Neurological Institute at McGill University, the University of Toronto, and the University of Alberta, among others. Nationally, there are 33 active research studies, with 1,640 patients enrolled in active studies, and Biogen has invested $5.5 million in data registries.

Beyond research, Biogen has also developed its capabilities to create what it views as novel ways to seamlessly transition products from development to manufacturing, with the intent of bringing high quality medicines to market faster. Also, in recognizing the challenges facing health care systems today, Biogen works with regulatory authorities, health care providers and payers, to allow those in need to access its medicines.

One product that Biogen is particularly proud of is its latest therapy, called Spinraza, to treat Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). While SMA is a rare disorder affecting roughly only one in ten thousand, its symptoms can be devastating, with many children not living past their second birthday, and many more dependent on respiratory and feeding equipment and confined to a wheelchair. For a community where there were previously no treatments available, Spinraza is bringing hope to many patients and their families, says Vasiliou.

There have been significant motor function improvements across a wide range of patients, including being able to sit unassisted, stand, and walk independently. There was also improvement in survival among those most severely affected.

“Spinraza is a true innovation and we are working hard with authorities in Canada to make treatment available for as many patients as possible,” she elaborates.

Biogen also has a rich pipeline of other products, like Aducanumab to treat Alzheimer’s, which is currently in phase 3 trials and is widely considered to be the most promising therapy in this area, says Vasiliou.

“As we look to the future and the next 40 years at Biogen, there is much to be excited about and I am very optimistic,” she emphasizes.

Meet Robert Verhagen, CEO of the Centre for the Commercialization of Antibodies and Biologics À la rencontre de Robert Verhagen, chef de la direction du Centre for the Commercialization of Antibodies and Biologics

ESTABLISHED IN 2014, THE CENTRE FOR THE COMMERCIALIZATION OF ANTIBODIES AND BIOLOGICS (CCAB) works with academic institutions, industry, entrepreneurs, financial organizations and government to help develop the next generation of Canadian biotech enterprises and global health technologies. In November 2017, Robert Verhagen was appointed the new Chief Executive Officer of CCAB. Rob brings more than 20 years of business and leadership experience in the pharmaceutical and diagnostics field to this young organization. Most recently, he was CEO at Helix Biopharma where he led the reorganization of the company, raising over $30 million and advancing its nonsmall-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) candidate through early-stage clinical trials.

We spoke to Rob about his first few months with CCAB and his long-term vision for the organization.

INSIGHTS: WHAT DREW YOU TO THE CEO POSITION AT CCAB? RV: I saw an opportunity with CCAB’s commercialization work and its accomplishments to date. The organization has extensive expertise in synthetic antibody production and a large portfolio of validated antibodies against a wide range of clinical targets, which has helped CCAB establish a number of successful partnerships that involve antibodybased therapies, including CAR-T and antibody drug conjugate (ADC) projects.

I thought that my experience would be a good complement and that I could help the organization build upon the existing basis and mechanisms while expanding its reach in the community. I envision CCAB evolving into an organization that assists with the creation of companies which are developing novel therapies. The organization will broaden its focus, identifying how it can most effectively interact with start-up biotech companies – from early innovation through to product development. CCAB is, in fact, already working with or has worked with companies that fit into this space.

FONDÉ EN 2014, LE CENTRE FOR THE COMMERCIALIZATION OF ANTIBODIES AND BIOLOGICS (centre pour la commercialisation des anticorps et des produits biologiques, CCAB) travaille avec les établissements d’enseignement, le secteur privé, les entrepreneurs, les organisations financières et les gouvernements à la mise sur pied de la nouvelle génération d’entreprises canadiennes de biotechnologie et à la mise au point d’innovations mondiales en technologies de santé. En novembre 2017, on a nommé Robert Verhagen chef de la direction du CCAB. M. Verhagen apporte à cette jeune organisation plus de 20 ans d’expérience des affaires et de la direction dans le domaine des diagnostics et des produits pharmaceutiques. Récemment chef de la direction de Helix Biopharma, il a organisé la restructuration de la société, obtenu 30 millions $ de fonds et fait évoluer son candidat-médicament contre le cancer du poumon non à petites cellules à travers les premiers essais cliniques.

Nous avons parlé avec lui de ses premiers mois au CCAB et de sa vision à long terme pour l’organisation.

INSIGHTS : QU’EST-CE QUI VOUS A ATTIRÉ DANS LE POSTE DE CHEF DE LA DIRECTION DU CCAB? RV : J’ai vu dans le travail de commercialisation à faire pour le CCAB, en fonction de ce qu’il avait accompli à ce jour, une occasion intéressante. L’organisation jouit d’une expertise approfondie en matière de production d’anticorps synthétiques et d’une importante gamme d’anticorps validés, ayant pour cibles des problèmes de santé variés. RV: I’ve spent my career with private sector, publicly-traded life sciences companies, managing development programs from discovery to clinical approval. When I look at CCAB and its existing and emerging partnerships, I see a combination of a smart, dedicated team with leading-edge biotechnical skills and exciting technology with potential applications in many diseases with unmet needs. I feel that my experience will contribute the focus that will help move CCAB’s partnerships further along the path of drug development and help them to secure the financing needed to bring these novel innovations to a greater value inflection point.

INSIGHTS: YOU MENTIONED THAT ONE OF THE REASONS YOU WERE DRAWN TO THE CEO POSITION AT CCAB IS THE ORGANIZATION’S EARLY ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN COMMERCIALIZING ANTIBODIES. HOW WILL YOU CAPITALIZE ON THESE OPPORTUNITIES? RV: I definitely want to build on CCAB’s accomplishments and strengths. To date, CCAB has primarily been involved in commercializing antibody technology from the University of Toronto. I would like to build on that, not just licensing technology but assisting in the creation of companies around that. By merging business acumen with the research knowledge and technical expertise of the CCAB team, we can explore some very exciting opportunities to support the development of new therapeutic products and to build a viable life sciences company around that product. As part of this process, CCAB would be assisting with the development of a team that has the skills to take a therapeutic concept from early discovery to a financeable corporate entity.

We’ve already taken some initial steps. We’ve been working with our key funding partner the Networks of Centres of Excellence of Canada (NCE), as well as the life sciences community to understand what start-up companies need and what is the best way for CCAB to move forward. At the same time, we are developing business models that will help us shift into this new role.

Je compte m’appuyer sur cela non seulement pour l’octroi de licences liées à ces technologies, mais aussi pour la création des entreprises nécessaires. L’association de mon sens des affaires avec les connaissances en recherche et l’expertise technique de l’équipe du CCAB permettra d’explorer des avenues extrêmement prometteuses en vue du développement de nouveaux produits thérapeutiques et de la mise sur pied des entreprises de sciences de la vie aptes à porter ces produits et à durer. INSIGHTS: YOU HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN THE BIOTECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST PROMISING DEVELOPMENTS YOU HAVE SEEN? RV: The biotech world has changed dramatically over the past 25 years. One of the most notable changes has been the interaction between the different segments of the drug development pipeline.

Today, there is much more interaction between universities, small biotech companies and pharmaceutical companies. The ecosystem is much broader and encompassing. This distributed level of engagement is encouraging for the future of drug development because it lets every party contribute in their particular sphere of expertise, which increases the potential for success.

Furthermore, the role of small biotech companies has changed. Some of the really innovative ideas are coming from the small companies in collaboration or initiated by academic researchers. The people that are creating these companies are willing to take the risk and raise the money to pursue the ideas and focus on developing a new therapy.

INSIGHTS: FINALLY, WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MOST EXCITING OPPORTUNITIES IN THIS SECTOR THAT YOU SEE ON THE HORIZON? RV: Our greatest opportunities lie in our collective brain power and our ability to innovate.

In the Toronto region, for example, we already have many of the right ingredients – the innovation talent, the research expertise, and an evolving network – to build a competitive biotech cluster for the development of antibody-based therapeutics.

Previously, Canada was focused on bringing the marquee pharma companies to the country as the key part of the drug development process. We are now starting to focus on creating an environment for innovation, one that encourages those involved in early-stage life sciences to take a chance on the development of new therapies.

“This environment – the people and the skills – will, in turn, attract the large pharma companies and allow the establishment of the partnerships that are needed to get promising therapies to the market and, ultimately, to the patients who need them.”

CETA amendments: Impact on biologics in Canada Modifications découlant de l’Accord économique et commercial global : incidences sur les produits biologiques au Canada

THE CANADA-EU COMPREHENSIVE ECONOMIC AND TRADE AGREEMENT (CETA) was signed on October 30, 2016. Flowing from its CETA commitments, Canada amended the Patent Act on May 11, 2017, including by introducing new certificates of supplementary protection (CSPs). The Patent Act amendments and the new CSP Regulations and amended Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) (PMNOC) Regulations came into force on September 21, 2017, ushering in a distinctly different regime for patent protection and enforcement for pharmaceutical and biologic drugs in Canada. Data protection (six years no-subsequent-filing; eight years no-marketing approval, plus a possible 6-month pediatric extension), in force since 2006, and applicable both to biologics and small molecules remain unchanged. The following provides an overview of how the CETA amendments will change the patent framework for biologics in Canada.

CSPs: PATENT TERM RESTORATION CSPs are equally available to biologics and small molecules.

They provide a maximum two-year extension to the 20-year patent term for one patent per product. The purpose of this extension is to increase the effective patent term to take into account the time required to obtain data for regulatory approval and obtain regulatory approval. The term is calculated by subtracting five years from the period beginning on the filing date of the application for the patent and ending on the day on which the authorization for sale is issued.

The requirements for a CSP include: • The application must be filed for the first notice of compliance (NOC) for the medicinal ingredient (MI) or combination of MIs, and that NOC must have issued on or after September 21, 2017; • The patent must contain a claim for the same MI or combination of MIs in the drug product, or use of that MI or combination of MIs (that use need not be approved); pure process patents and patents claiming formulations are therefore excluded; • The CSP application must be filed within 120 days of grant of the NOC (for an earlier granted patent) or the patent (for an earlier granted NOC); and

Le 11 mai 2017, le Canada a modifié la Loi sur les brevets en fonction des engagements pris dans le cadre de l’AECG, notamment par l’introduction des nouveaux certificats de protection supplémentaire (CPS). Les modifications apportées à la Loi sur les brevets, le nouveau Règlement sur les certificats de protection supplémentaire et le Règlement sur les médicaments brevetés (Avis de conformité) modifié sont entrés en vigueur le 21 septembre 2017, instituant un régime nettement différent de protection et de respect des brevets portant sur des produits biologiques et pharmaceutiques au Canada. La protection des données (six ans sans dépôt; huit ans sans autorisation de mise en marché, avec une prolongation pédiatrique de six mois) en vigueur depuis 2006, qui s’applique tant aux produits biologiques qu’aux petites molécules, reste inchangée. Ce qui suit est un aperçu des incidences des modifications découlant de l’entrée en vigueur de l’AECG sur le cadre juridique des brevets sur les produits biologiques au Canada.

CERTIFICATS DE PROTECTION SUPPLÉMENTAIRE : RÉTABLISSEMENT DE LA DURÉE DE VALIDITÉ DES BREVETS Les CPS peuvent être obtenus tant pour les produits biologiques que pour les petites molécules. Ils procurent une prolongation maximale de deux ans de la durée de protection de 20 ans du brevet à raison d’un brevet par produit. Le but de cette prolongation est d’augmenter la durée de validité effective d’un brevet en tenant compte du temps requis pour obtenir les données aux fins d’approbation réglementaire et pour obtenir ladite approbation réglementaire. La durée de validité est calculée en soustrayant cinq ans à la période écoulée à partir de la date du dépôt de la demande de brevet et se terminant à la date de délivrance de l’autorisation de mise en marché.

Exigences applicables aux CPS : • la demande doit être déposée pour le premier avis de conformité d’un ingrédient médicinal, ou d’une combinaison d’ingrédients médicinaux, et cet avis de conformité doit avoir été délivré le 21 septembre 2017 ou ultérieurement;

UN NOUVEAU RÉGIME MET FIN AU DOUBLE LITIGE • The regulatory submission must be filed in Canada within 12 months of the first corresponding foreign application in enumerated countries including in the EU, the US, and Japan (subject to a transitional provision).

NEW LITIGATION SCHEME ENDS DUAL LITIGATION The amended PMNOC Regulations apply to all submissions for which a notice of allegation was served after September 21, 2017. Both the current and former PMNOC Regulations apply to both biologics and small molecules.

The amendments are extensive and include: • Replacement of summary proceedings with a full right of action; • Providing an effective right of appeal for decisions on the merits for innovators; • Ending the prior system of dual litigation which had permitted the party that lost in the PMNOC proceeding to sue in a separate action for a declaration of infringement or invalidity; and • Introducing the ability to assert all claims in listed and unlisted patents once served with a notice of allegation, which, for biologics, would notably permit assertion of process claims prior to biosimilar launch.

The patent listing requirements are unchanged, except that they now extend to CSPs. The litigation scheme is now much closer to the US Hatch-Waxman scheme for small molecules, with one notable difference being a 24-month stay under the PMNOC Regulations versus a 30-months stay in the US. Further, the PMNOC Regulations, unlike the US scheme, include a s. 8 damages provision which provides for monetary recovery by a generic or biosimilar manufacturer if the innovator is unsuccessful in obtaining a declaration of infringement.

Les modifications sont importantes et elles consistent, entre autres, en ce qui suit : • le remplacement des procédures sommaires par un plein droit d’action en justice; • le droit d’appel effectif sur le fond des décisions pour les innovateurs; • la fin du double litige qui permettait à la partie qui n’avait pas obtenu gain de cause dans le cadre de l’action intentée aux termes du Règlement sur les médicaments brevetés (Avis de conformité) d’instituer une action en contrefaçon ou en nullité de brevet; et • l’adoption de mesures permettant de faire valoir toutes les revendications contenues dans les brevets inscrits et non inscrits au registre après qu’un avis d’allégation a été signifié, lequel, en ce qui concerne les produits biologiques, permettrait notamment de faire valoir les revendications de procédé avant le lancement de produits biologiques ultérieurs (biosimilaires).

Les exigences relatives à l’inscription au registre des brevets sont inchangées, mais s’appliquent maintenant aussi aux CPS. La procédure judiciaire est devenue presque semblable à celle prévue par la loi Hatch-Waxman des États Unis en ce qui concerne les petites molécules, avec cependant une différence notable, à savoir que le Règlement sur les médicaments brevetés (Avis de conformité) accorde un sursis de 24 mois, comparativement à 30 mois sous le régime de la loi Hatch-Waxman. à la loi Hatch-Waxman, prévoit à l’article 8 des dommages intérêts payables à un fabricant de médicaments génériques ou de biosimilaires si la société innovatrice n’obtient pas de déclaration de contrefaçon de brevet.

INCIDENCES SUR LES BIOSIMILAIRES

“The end to dual litigation and the restoration of the innovator’s right of appeal, together with CSPs are positive changes to the regime, although specific procedural nuances under the new litigation regime remain to be seen.”

IMPACT ON BIOSIMILARS As of February 2018, Health Canada had approved a total of eight biosimilars, based on five reference products, starting with Sandoz’s OMNITROPE (somatropin) in 2009, all of which were approved under the pre-CETA regime. One of these biosimilars is Apotex’s filgrastim product. Apotex was successful against Amgen in a PMNOC proceeding that had been commenced in 2012. Amgen’s appeal was dismissed as moot as Apotex received its NOC in 2015. Amgen subsequently sued for patent infringement of the patent that was the subject of the PMNOC proceeding, including by asserting process claims; that action remains pending. If Apotex had instead served a notice of allegation under the current post-CETA regime, there would not have been dual litigation: there would be only one action under the PMNOC Regulations, likely concluded in a 24-month period, and Amgen could have asserted the process claims. If Amgen had been unsuccessful in this post-CETA PMNOC action, even if Apotex received its NOC, Amgen would have had the opportunity to pursue its appeal.

En date de février 2018, Santé Canada avait approuvé huit médicaments biologiques similaires (ou « biosimilaires ») fondés sur cinq médicaments biologiques de référence, qui avaient tous été approuvés conformément au régime de brevets en vigueur avant la signature de l’AECG, en commençant par OMNITROPE (somatropine) de Sandoz en 2009. L’un de ces biosimilaires est le filgrastim d’Apotex.

Apotex avait obtenu gain de cause contre Amgen dans le cadre d’une action intentée en 2012 aux termes du Règlement sur les médicaments brevetés (Avis de conformité). L’appel d’Amgen avait été rejeté au motif que la plainte était sans fondement, Apotex ayant reçu un avis de conformité en 2015. Par la suite, Amgen a intenté une action en contrefaçon du brevet qui faisait l’objet des procédures intentées aux termes du Règlement sur les médicaments brevetés (Avis de conformité), notamment en faisant valoir des revendications de procédé; l’action est toujours en cours. Si Apotex avait plutôt signifié un avis d’allégation en vertu du régime actuel (mis en place à la suite de la signature de l’AECG), il n’y aurait pas eu de double litige, mais seulement une action intentée aux termes du Règlement sur les médicaments brevetés (Avis de conformité) qui aurait probablement été conclue dans une période de 24 mois, et Amgen aurait pu faire valoir des revendications de procédé. Si Amgen n’avait pas obtenu gain de cause dans cette action, intentée après la signature de l’AECG, aux termes du Règlement sur les médicaments brevetés (Avis de conformité), Amgen aurait eu la possibilité d’interjeter appel, et ce même si un avis de conformité avait été délivré à Apotex.

Plusieurs demandes déposées avant la modification du Règlement sur les médicaments brevetés (Avis de conformité) et portant principalement sur des petites molécules sont encore en traitement. Quatre d’entre elles portent sur le rituximab de Celltrion (un biosimilaire de RITUXAN de Hoffmann-La Roche). La toute première action intentée aux termes du Règlement sur les médicaments brevetés (Avis de conformité) concerne le trastuzumab d’Amgen (un biosimilaire de HERCEPTIN de Hoffmann-La Roche).

Les produits biologiques bénéficient aussi du nouveau régime des CPS. Au moment de publier cet article, huit demandes de CPS avaient été déposées, dont six concernaient des produits biologiques : deux vaccins, trois médicaments à base d’anticorps et un médicament peptidique. Une fois ces demandes accueillies, tout biosimilaire éventuel de ces produits devra composer avec les conditions du CPS. Dans l’exemple ci-dessus, comme le premier médicament contenant du filgrastim a été approuvé bien avant le 21 septembre 2017, un CPS n’aurait pas pu être obtenu.

There remain a number of applications pending under the pre-amended PMNOC Regulations, primarily relating to small molecule products. However, there are four such applications relating to Celltrion’s rituximab (a biosimilar of Hoffmann-La Roche’s RITUXAN). The very first actions under the PMNOC Regulations relate to Amgen’s trastuzumab (a biosimilar of Hoffmann-La Roche’s HERCEPTIN).

Biologics are also benefiting from the new CSP regime.

As of this writing, eight CSP applications have been filed, six of which are biologics: two vaccines, three antibody drug products, and one peptide drug product. Once granted, any biosimilar of these products will also need to contend with the CSP term. Referring back to the example above, as the first drug product containing filgrastim was approved well before September 21, 2017, a CSP would not have been available.

CONCLUSIONS 2017 marked a year of significant change to the life sciences IP and regulatory framework in Canada. The end to dual litigation and the restoration of the innovator’s right of appeal, together with CSPs are positive changes to the regime, although specific procedural nuances under the new litigation regime remain to be seen. These changes, together with possible significant changes to the Patented Medicine Prices Review Board regime, require careful fresh consideration by biotech companies across many intersecting issues for each of their drug products.

En 2017, le secteur des sciences de la vie a fait face à d’importantes modifications réglementaires et dans le domaine de la propriété intellectuelle au Canada. La fin du double litige, le rétablissement du droit d’appel des sociétés pharmaceutiques innovatrices, ainsi que l’introduction des CPS sont des changements positifs, même si s’il reste à voir quelles nuances procédurales seront apportées dans le cadre du nouveau régime en matière de litiges. An innovative, collaborative approach to tackle

FOR THOSE WHO LIVE WITH DEMENTIA – AND THOSE COMMITTED TO ITS TREATMENT AND PREVENTION – THE COST OF THE DISEASE IS EXTRAORDINARILY HIGH. THE NEED FOR NEW SOLUTIONS IS URGENT

IN 2016, AN ESTIMATED 564,000 CANADIANS SUFFERED FROM DEMENTIA. By 2031, says the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, that figure will rise to 937,000. In the US it is estimated that the Alzheimer’s burden will triple from 5.3 million people today to 16 million by 2050. Worldwide, nearly 44 million people have or are living with an Alzheimer’s related disease. In 2016, the cost to Canada’s health care system, and to those who live with dementia, was estimated at $10.4 billion. By 2031, that total will likely reach $16.6 billion. In 2014, the direct costs of caring for people living with the disease was estimated to total well over $210 billion in the US. Clearly, the need to act, to improve treatment and to pursue the eventual prevention of Alzheimer’s disease, is great. Fortunately, while the need is great, so is the response.

In the US alone, approximately $991 million was spent on Alzheimer’s disease and dementia-related research in 2016.

The Alzheimer’s disease therapeutics and diagnostics market alone reached more than $6.7 billion.

Among those leading the way is KalGene Pharmaceuticals, a privately held Canadian company working in partnership with leading clinician-scientists and academic institutions.

One of the key reasons KalGene believes it is on the road to success, says its President and Chief Scientific Officer, is because the road it has chosen to take accounts for the multiple failures of the past: It must attack the true pathological target, efficiently deliver the drug to the brain and select the patient group by utilizing novel AI technology which can best benefit from the drug treatment.

“It’s true, we have taken a novel approach to slowing down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease,” says Dr. T. Nathan Yoganathan. “A major obstacle to treating neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s is delivering therapeutics past the blood-brain barrier. Using technology licensed from the National Research Council of Canada, we’re overcoming that obstacle. As a result, our development candidate is able to pass through the blood-brain barrier, rapidly inducing brain and CSF-amyloid-beta clearance. Studies to date have indicated dramatic plaque removal.”

KalGene’s work – and its success – has not gone unnoticed.

Late last year, the firm received significant financial support from a syndicated investment led by Lumira Capital. Also participating in the transaction were Anges Québec, Anges Québec Capital, Accel-Rx Health Sciences Accelerator and a number of Canadian family offices. François Gilbert, CEO of Anges Québec and Anges Québec Capital, explained the decision to support KalGene this way: “We were impressed by the quality of the science behind KalGene and their approach to Alzheimer’s treatments. We know that important challenges lie ahead in this race to tackle Alzheimer’s disease, but we are confident that the KalGene team has what it takes to succeed.”

Kalgene’s collaborative Alzheimer’s disease partnership with the NRC Human Health Therapeutics unites Ottawa and Montreal development groups.

If Dr. Yoganathan shares that optimism – and he does – he says it’s largely because of KalGene’s ability to attract and work with key partners, including the National Research Council of Canada and McGill University, where a number of the lead clinicians and researchers are located. “The scientists there deserve a lot of credit for what we’ve accomplished,” he says. “No doubt, their contributions have helped us move forward with confidence. The Douglas Hospital is at the forefront of AD clinical research. We will be employing brain imaging and are developing an innovative AI-based approach for patient monitoring which will allow us to progress rapidly, once the therapeutic enters the clinic.”

Dr. John Gillard, KalGene VP, Product Development, is a seasoned researcher and drug developer, he expresses his enthusiasm for the project as a “remarkable example of a collaborative venture, combining the best of Canadian drug design ingenuity with world-leading clinical insight to create a molecule with a real promise, and which I am proud

to move forward.” The drug product is being bio-manufactured in Canada using a process developed by the team at the National Research Council Human Health Division in Montreal.

And forward is definitely the direction KalGene is heading.

Dr. Yoganathan expects the company to hold the first clinical trial of its Alzheimer’s therapeutic candidate at McGill University in 2019. The company has worked closely with the McGill Centre for Aging over the past 2 years to characterise the molecule in a battery of tests resembling the proposed clinical study. Dr. Pedro Rosa Neto is the Assoc. Director at the Centre for Aging, who will also oversee the clinical trial.

He says “We have had contributions from Canada’s leading Brain Research Foundations, Weston Brain Foundation, Ontario Brain Institute (OBI), Brain Canada and CQDM so we understand the workings of this molecule so well now.

We have seen success in all the studies to date and we are now actively recruiting patients with the best chance of demonstrating a clinical effect.” He says the safety studies are expected to last about three months, the initial efficacy study a little less than a year.

In the meanwhile, KalGene will continue to pursue the development path it has chosen, confident that its approach towards Alzheimer’s Disease modification is the right one.

Renaissance BioScience: Revolutionizing yeast for wine, beer and food Renaissance BioScience : une révolution dans le domaine de la levure pour le vin, la bière et les aliments

YEAST HAS SERVED HUMAN CIVILIZATION VERY WELL FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS in its role in the fermentation of wine, beer and bread products. A relatively simple organism, yeast has surprisingly remarkable features, and holds enormous potential in new areas in the food and beverage, nutrition, biofuels, cleantech and pharmaceuticals categories. Today, a young Vancouver company is a leader in the global non-GMO yeast breeding and development arena.

Founded in 2013 and now with approximately two dozen employees, young research company Renaissance BioScience (www.renaissancebioscience.com) of Vancouver is at the forefront of global efforts to harness yeast’s potential biodiversity and put it to work to solve important food and beverage industrial problems. Indeed, the company is on a fast track, with yeast products already in commercial sales for winemaking and beer production in markets around the world.

“We’ve got an outstanding team of dedicated scientists who are doing amazing work,” notes company CEO and co-founder Dr. John Husnik. “And we have a number of exciting advances in the pipeline to follow what’s already out there in the market.”

The company initiated its operations in 2013 by licensing a highly valuable hydrogen sulfide-reducing yeast trait first discovered and patented by researchers at the University of California at Davis. Hydrogen sulfide — and associated negative, volatile sulphur compounds, mercaptans and disulfides — cause a variety of off-aromas (rotten egg, burnt rubber, rotten cabbage, garlic, etc.) that can greatly reduce a product’s sales value. Even if present only in infinitesimal amounts undetectable to the nose, hydrogen sulfide masks the full aroma and flavour of wine, cider and beer. With this pervasive industry issue in mind, Renaissance adopted as its first objective the development of a family of red, white, cider and organic wine yeasts that would allow the true character of a final product to be revealed. These yeasts are now sold in every important winemaking market in the world.

Yeast also has a valuable role to play in greatly reducing the formation of the carcinogen acrylamide — a contaminant that occurs as a result of the food manufacturing process in foods that are heated, fried, toasted, roasted and baked above 120°C. Acrylamide is most often found in carbohydrate-rich

À l’heure actuelle, c’est une jeune entreprise vancouvéroise qui mène le jeu dans l’arène mondiale de la culture et du développement de levures non génétiquement modifiées.

Fondée en 2013 et comptant désormais environ vingt-cinq employés, la jeune pousse de recherche Renaissance BioScience (www.renaissancebioscience.com, en anglais) de Vancouver est à l’avant-plan des efforts mondiaux visant à exploiter la biodiversité potentielle de la levure pour résoudre d’importants problèmes industriels en matière d’aliments et de boissons. Elle a d’ailleurs emprunté la voie rapide, car ses levures ont déjà fait leur entrée dans le marché commercial mondial de la production de vin et de bière. « Nous disposons d’une équipe exceptionnelle de chercheurs engagés dans le projet, qui font un travail fantastique », se réjouit le chef de la direction et co-fondateur de la société, John Husnik, Ph. D. « De plus, d’autres passionnants produits sont en développement dans notre filière de recherche et rejoindront leurs prédécesseurs sur le marché. » L’entreprise a démarré ses activités en 2013 par l’obtention de la licence pour un précieux trait de la levure, qui consiste à réduire le sulfure d’hydrogène (trait découvert et breveté par des chercheurs de l’Université de Californie à Davis). Le sulfure d’hydrogène – et les autres composés volatils négatifs du soufre qui y sont associés, les thiols et le disulfure – cause diverses odeurs désagréables (œuf pourri, caoutchouc brûlé, chou rance, ail, etc.) qui réduisent grandement la valeur de vente d’un produit. Même s’il n’est présent qu’en quantité infinitésimale indétectable par l’odorat, le sulfure d’hydrogène masque le plein arôme du vin, du cidre et de la bière. C’est donc avec cette vaste industrie en tête que Renaissance s’est fixé comme premier objectif le développement d’une famille de levures à vin rouge, à vin blanc, à cidre et à vin biologique devant permettre au produit final de révéler tout son

“We’ve got an outstanding team of dedicated scientists who are doing amazing work” foods, e.g., potato chips and French fries, bread, coffee and many snack foods, and the more heat applied over a longer period of time, the more acrylamide that eventually forms.

It is why, for example, Health Canada recommends that consumers toast bread to a light golden colour only: while bread that leaves the bread manufacturing facility may have low levels of acrylamide, subsequent toasting to a dark colour can boost acrylamide levels up to tenfold. The same challenge applies for French fries and other products.

To address this important concern for food safety regulators all around the world, Renaissance took aim at using non-GMO techniques to develop a yeast strain that would consume asparagine, the precursor amino acid

C’est la raison pour laquelle, entre autres, Santé Canada recommande que les consommateurs ne grillent leur pain que légèrement. En effet, alors que le pain qui vient d’être fabriqué possède peu d’acrylamide, le fait de le griller longtemps peut en multiplier par dix la teneur. Le même défi se pose en ce qui concerne les frites et les autres produits énumérés.

Afin de remédier à cette importante préoccupation des organismes de réglementation en matière d’innocuité des aliments à travers le monde, Renaissance a visé l’utilisation

that converts to acrylamide during the application of heat.

The result: an acrylamide-reducing yeast (ARY) that decreases the presence of the carcinogen by up to 90%. With the European Union set to initiate regulatory guidelines starting in April 2018 that limit how much acrylamide can be present in food products, it’s a timely development.

Renaissance’s ARY can be included in literally any baked good that uses yeast. It has been ruled GRAS (the same status as traditional baker’s yeast) by the U.S. FDA, can be listed simply as “yeast,” and is certifiable as “clean-label” — ideal for food manufacturers who are concerned about their ingredients lists. ARY was first licensed in May 2017 to Norwegian food giant Orkla for production and sale in Orkla’s local Nordic regional markets of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark. Trials and testing with Orkla’s food manufacturer customers have gone extremely well, and Renaissance recently agreed to expand Orkla’s contract to include nearby Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Husnik adds that “it’s pretty clear that food manufacturers want to address the acrylamide issue. Our ARY provides the solution, simply and effectively.”

The company has also been directing its attention at extending its hydrogen sulfide-preventing yeast trait into beer yeasts, targeting the large international beer market. Craft beer has exploded over the last thirty years, with amazing flavour innovations now a regular occurrence. Few are aware, however, that yeast accounts for more than half the flavour of any beer, and Renaissance’s goal is to greatly increase the number of available beer yeasts by developing a suite of enhanced yeasts for use in lager, ale, Saison brews and an innovative hybrid called Saiseweizen recently developed by Renaissance through the mating of a Saison yeast strain with a Heffeweizen. Last year, Saiseweizen was very well received in taste tests at the international Drinktec conference in Munich, Germany.

Renaissance hopes to begin selling its full family of its beer yeasts later this year, and projects having more than ten in the marketplace by the end of 2019. “We’re confident that our beer yeast innovations will be well received by craft and

L’entreprise a aussi tourné son attention vers les levures brassicoles, auxquelles elle pourrait étendre son trait de prévention du sulfure d’hydrogène et ainsi atteindre un autre vaste marché international. Les bières artisanales se sont multipliées à un rythme fou au cours des trente dernières années, et on découvre régulièrement sur les tablettes des innovations en matière de saveur. Peu de gens savent, néanmoins, que le goût de n’importe quelle bière repose pour plus de moitié sur la levure. Renaissance a pour objectif d’augmenter considérablement le nombre de levures brassicoles par la mise au point d’une série de levures pour les bières blondes, les ales, les bières de fermentation haute (« Saison »), ainsi que pour une bière hybride innovante appelée Saiseweizen, que Renaissance a récemment développée en associant une souche de levure Saison à une HefeWeizen (bière de blé). L’an dernier, on a très bien accueilli la Saiseweizen aux dégustations qui ont eu lieu au congrès international Drinktec, à Munich, en Allemagne.

Renaissance espère commencer la vente de la gamme complète de ses levures brassicoles plus tard cette année, avec pour objectif plus de dix levures sur le marché d’ici la fin de 2019. « Nous sommes convaincus que les brasseries artisanales comme les grandes brasseries feront bon accueil à nos levures novatrices », indique M. Over six years and nine rounds of funding, GAPP has funded 48 projects so far, with an investment of approximately $184 million, including $57 million from Genome Canada.

While people most commonly associate genomics with the health sector, we are proud that our GAPP portfolio includes not only many health projects, but also several from diverse sectors of importance to the Canadian economy, such as agriculture and agri-food, aquaculture, environment and natural resources. A growing number of industries are discovering the increased efficiencies, cost savings and societal benefits made possible by investments in genomics research.

In agriculture, Indigo Agriculture has partnered with researchers from the University of Saskatchewan who’ve discovered a new class of natural microbes that can dramatically improve crop yield and stress resistance in major crops in Canada and around the world, including wheat, maize, soybean, canola, barley, and pulses – crops

With help from the GAPP program, IndigoAg has grown to a company of more than 300 employees and has raised more than $400 million from investors. The product created from this research, Indigo Corn, was commercially launched in the spring of 2017 and has demonstrated a 30+ bushel-per-acre yield increase on farms under severe water stress.

Aquaculture, a $3 billion-a-year Canadian industry, is perpetually threatened by infectious diseases that affect farmed salmon. Scientists at Memorial University and Cargill Aqua Nutrition are developing a platform to quantify

AstraZeneca is working with researchers at McGill University, the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal and MRM Proteomics in Victoria to identify cancer biomarkers that can lead to the design of more effective clinical trials.

the expression of multiple genes related to salmon health and performance using a single biological sample. This will allow Cargill — one of the world’s largest producers of aquafeeds — to increase its market share by developing novel, high quality feeds that will boost immunity.

While Canadians may be famous for their bacon and beer consumption, we’re also cheese lovers and — more and more — cheese producers. In Quebec, fine and specialty cheeses have become major products in the portfolio of Agropur, the cooperative owned by 3,400 milk producers that consumes more than a quarter of the milk produced in Canada each year. A team at Université Laval is working with Agropur, using genomics-based techniques to enhance and standardize the ripening process that is key the production of high quality cheeses. This project is particularly timely as the Canada-Europe free trade deal opens each market to more cheesemakers.

BioAmber Inc., which operates the world’s largest succinic acid plant in Sarnia, Ontario, is partnering with researchers at the University of Toronto to explore the use of sugar instead of petroleum to manufacture nylon. The UofT researchers are using microbial genomics to convert simple sugars into the complex molecular precursors for nylon production. This approach requires significantly less energy and produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions than traditional petroleum-based nylon production.

And of course the program supports many projects that are working to translate genomics into health breakthroughs.

Heart failure is the costliest chronic disease in both developed and developing countries. In Round 2 of GAPP, Genome Canada supported a partnership between Roche International and Dr. Peter Liu of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute to develop a better way to identify and classify heart failure based on testing novel genetic biomarkers for the disease. This project built on a previous Genome Canadasupported project that had identified and patented novel candidate biomarkers. Roche’s partnership provided them the opportunity to work with a world-leader in heart genomics to develop a diagnostic test that can run on more

Genome Canada is also proud of an exciting partnership designed to tackle difficult challenges in cancer treatment.

The partnership between AstraZeneca and researchers at McGill University, the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal and Victoria-based MRM Proteomics is working together to develop a test that will identify patients with specific types of protein and pathway activation in particular cancers.

Identifying these biomarkers will allow AstraZeneca to identify those patients most likely to benefit from treatment and design more effective clinical trials. MRM Proteomics is planning to commercialize the test and continue its commercial partnership with AstraZeneca, to the benefit of patients in Canada and worldwide.

As much as we believe in supporting established researchers who produce the genomics breakthroughs of today, we also invest in the scientific and entrepreneurial leaders of tomorrow. To that end, Genome Canada partners with Mitacs—a national, not-for-profit organization that designs and delivers research and training programs— on several of our GAPP projects. The SBC program began in the Toronto area in 1992 as the Connaught Student Biotechnology Exhibition (CSBE), the competition was established to raise biotechnology awareness among high school students, educators as well as the public and give hands-on exposure to its many applicants.

In 1996-97, the program expanded to Montreal, Quebec and to London, Ontario. The competition continued to expand over the following years to a high of 14 regional competitions followed by a consolidation of programs in 2011 resulting in today’s Sanofi Biogenius Canada having nine regional competitions. The first national competition was held in 2002 when the BIO convention returned to Toronto.

Throughout the years, and through a number of name changes, the Sanofi Group of companies in Canada has supported the competition as the title sponsor.

“I really don’t think that science has an age limit, I think that anyone can do science” For many participants, the SBC has proven vastly influential in mapping out future careers – in some cases paving the way for studies in Ivy League schools and exciting internships in the biotech industry. In past years, participants’ elite research projects range in topic, from cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, to agriculture and the environment.

Many have since been patented and commercialized, garnering international media attention and igniting a true culture of innovation in Canada. In recent years, Canadians have been very successful.

Today, students participating in the SBC competition work with local research mentors, giving students hands-on research experience in a professional lab setting. Participants compile their results and present their findings at their regional competitions with winners advancing to the National Competition, where they vie for the top spot and the chance to compete in the International Biogenius Challenge, held at the prestigious BIO International Convention – the largest biotechnology event in the world where they have been very successful in recent years.

Tasnia Nabil, a grade 11 student from Windsor, Ontario, has been involved in science fairs throughout her entire high school career and has been researching nanoparticles since before entering high school. Tasnia’s 2017 SBC research project, “A Novel Computational Approach to Advance Ferromagnetic NanoTherapy as a Therapeutic Solution for Cancer” won the national competition and Tasnia went on to be recognized as Runner Up in the Global Healthcare Challenge at the 2017 International BioGENEius Challenge in San Diego.

Le programme SBC a contribué à la détermination des objectifs de carrière de nombreux participants au concours.

Dans certains cas, elle a même mené à des études dans l’une des prestigieuses universités de l’Ivy League et à de passionnants stages au sein du secteur des biotechs. Au cours des ans, les projets d’élite des participants ont porté sur des sujets allant du cancer à la maladie d’Alzheimer, en passant par l’agriculture et l’environnement. Nombre de projets ont mené à des brevets et à la commercialisation de produits, attirant l’attention des médias internationaux et alimentant au Canada une profonde culture de l’innovation. Ces dernières années, les Canadiens ont connu d’importants succès.

Les étudiants qui participent au concours SBC bénéficient des conseils de mentors en recherche, qui leur offrent une expérience concrète dans un laboratoire professionnel. Les participants rendent compte de leurs résultats et les présentent au concours régional. Les gagnants des concours régionaux passent au concours national, où ils courent la chance d’obtenir une place à l’International Biogenius Challenge, qui se tient au prestigieux congrès international BIO – la plus importante rencontre mondiale dans le domaine des biotechs, où ils se sont illustrés ces dernières années.

Tasnia Nabil, une élève de 11e année (5e secondaire) de Windsor, en Ontario, a participé à des forums scientifiques tout au long de ses études secondaires et s’intéressait aux nanoparticules avant même de commencer le deuxième cycle.

Le projet de recherche 2017 de Tasnia pour le SBC, intitulé « Une approche computationnelle novatrice de la nanothérapie ferromagnétique comme traitement du cancer », a remporté le concours national, et celle-ci a obtenu la deuxième place du Global Healthcare Challenge, dans le cadre de l’International BioGENEius Challenge 2017 à San Diego.

Travailler au Centre des sciences de la santé de London auprès d’Alison Allan, Ph. D., a permis à Tasnia de se plonger dans la recherche. Elle a ainsi découvert que l’injection de cellules ferromagnétiques dans une tumeur suivie de l’utilisation d’une source magnétique extérieure pour faire

“The SBC competition helps to foster partnerships between academia, industry and government and encourages the next generation of young scientists to become the highly trained personnel of the future who will continue to drive development in biotechnology” Working at the London Health Sciences Center with Dr. Alison Allan has enabled Tasnia to immerse herself in her research. Tasnia discovered that injecting a tumor with ferromagnetic cells and using an external magnetic source to oscillate the particles can kill the cancer and leave the healthy cells unharmed. Due to cancer cells being more heat sensitive than regular cells, the friction produced by the oscillating particles generates enough heat to kill the cancer cells and leaves healthy cells alone. This type of therapy has been shown to theoretically kill 88% of breast cancer cells in less than an hour. Tasnia’s model also allows a physician to input the patient’s information and it will tell them how to carry out the treatment, including how many nanoparticles to use as well as the length of the therapy.

Tasnia is a multi-time gold medallist at the Canada Wide Science Fair, has received the NSERC University of Windsor Promotion of Science Award, the Actuarial Foundation of Canada Award, and has won the Jean Foster Writing Award among others. Tasnia is currently in her last year of high school at Vincent Massey Secondary School in Windsor, Ontario.

Curing cancer is just one of Tasnia’s goals in life, she also hopes become a biomedical researcher and to set an example.

“I really want to inspire other children to make a change in the world,” she says, “I really don’t think that science has an age limit, I think that anyone can do science.”

In 2015 Austin Wang from Vancouver, British Columbia placed second in the Sanofi Biogenius Canada national competition and went on to compete, and win a grand prize, at the International BioGENEius Challenge in Philadelphia for his research on microbial fuel cells.

Austin has been splitting his time between his hometown of Vancouver and New Jersey where he attends Princeton University. He has been able to continue his research and says it has definitely had an impact on his chosen field of study.

Austin first started researching microbial fuel cells in grade nine after stumbling across a webpage discussing the topic.

He first built his own mini microbial fuel cell in his backyard using a cashew container and soil. Once he secured mentorship with Dr. Susan Baldwin at UBC he started researching in a university lab and has been successful ever since.

Selon le modèle de Tasnia, un médecin pourrait savoir, après avoir saisi les données au sujet de son patient, comment effectuer le traitement, la quantité de nanoparticules à utiliser et la durée du traitement.

Tasnia a obtenu à plusieurs reprises la médaille d’or à l’Expo-sciences pancanadienne et a reçu, entre autres, le prix du CRSNG et de l’université de Windsor pour la promotion des sciences, le prix de la Fondation actuarielle du Canada et le prix d’écriture Jean Foster. Tasnia est actuellement en 12e année à l’école secondaire Vincent Massey de Windsor, en Ontario.

Trouver un remède contre le cancer n’est qu’un des objectifs de Tasnia dans la vie. Elle espère aussi devenir chercheuse dans le domaine biomédical et donner l’exemple : « Je souhaite vraiment être une source d’inspiration pour les autres jeunes, afin qu’ils tentent de rendre le monde meilleur.

Je ne pense pas qu’il y ait un âge pour les sciences. Au contraire, tout le monde peut s’y mettre. » En 2015, c’est Austin Wang de Vancouver, en ColombieBritannique, qui est arrivé deuxième au concours national Sanofi Biogenius Canada. Austin partage désormais son temps entre Vancouver et le New Jersey, où il fréquente l’université Princeton. Il a pu continuer ses recherches, qui ont selon lui joué un grand rôle dans le choix de son domaine d’études.

Austin a commencé à s’intéresser aux piles microbiennes en 9e année (3e secondaire) après être tombé sur une page web sur le sujet. Il a conçu sa première mini-pile microbienne dans sa cour à partir de terre et d’un contenant de noix de cajou. Dès lors qu’il s’est trouvé une mentore en la personne de Susan Baldwin, Ph. D., à UBC, il a pu effectuer ses recherches au sein d’un laboratoire universitaire, et celles-ci sont depuis très fructueuses.

Dans les piles microbiennes, les bactéries transforment les matières organiques qui se trouvent dans les eaux usées en productrices d’électricité, mais le procédé actuel est inefficace et coûteux. Austin a trouvé un moyen d’améliorer le rendement microbien et de considérablement augmenter l’efficacité de ces piles à combustible.

Il figure sur la liste des 25 étudiants les plus prometteurs de moins de 25 ans de Princeton et a remporté le grand prix Gordon E. Moore de 75 000 $ de l’Intel International Science and Engineering Fair en 2016. Non seulement Austin a-t-il été reconnu pour ses réalisations en recherche scientifique, mais il aussi gagné des prix en tant que compositeur et s’est produit aux quatre coins du monde.

Austin found a way to enhance microbe performance to significantly improve the efficiency of the fuel cells.

Austin has been listed in the Princeton top 25 under 25 and won the top prize Gordon E. Moore Award of $75,000 at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in 2016.

Not only has Austin been recognized for his scientific research accomplishments, but also he is also an awardwinning composer and has performed around the world.

Even after all the recognition, Austin recalls the Sanofi Biogenius Canada competition fondly, “the best part of the experience was just being able to talk to like-minded students of the same age from countries all around the world, and to see the really cool research they were doing. I was blown away by some of the science.”

Established in November 2011, the CBB has already gained a large share of influence in the bioengineering and biotechnology community. It has become one of the largest research centres at the University of Waterloo, and has a growing membership base of more than 130 faculty members. The CBB’s vision is to expand research in the fields of bioengineering, biotechnology and related life science areas through the facilitation of interdisciplinary collaboration amongst researchers.

A strength of the CBB’s structure as a research centre is its diversity. The Centre’s research groups are multidisciplinary, and members hold research interests in areas as diverse as computational and disease modelling, medical devices and diagnostics, imaging and sensors, therapeutics, cancer, healthcare systems, wearable devices, environmental biotechnology, targeted drug delivery and personalized medicine, rehabilitation, and more. The Centre’s members stem from every faculty at Waterloo with its greatest numbers in Engineering and Science; members also include some of the campus’ most highly respected researchers, as well as several Canada Research Chairs awarded through the Government of Canada.

Bioengineering and biotechnology research challenges require a diverse range of perspectives to create innovative solutions. To create such solutions, the CBB strategically capitalizes on Waterloo’s rapidly-growing research community by building a multidisciplinary academic team of researchers and facilitating partnerships that integrate a variety of perspectives; upholding its reputation of fostering a multidisciplinary approach to solve the toughest of research challenges.

An example of this approach is seen in the work of members Dr. Jennifer Boger, Dr. Alex Wong, Dr. Plinio Morita, and Dr. George Shaker. Recently, the team combined their respective understandings of systems design engineering, health informatics, electrical engineering, and artificial intelligence for the innovative development of a zero-effort, multi-sensory, ambient assisted living (AAL) system. Their AAL system is designed to autonomously track and monitor the daily activities of older adults in multipleoccupant settings through the integration of deep learning

models and multi-sensory data fusion techniques, all while being free from the use of a wearable device. By incorporating information from innovative wireless sensors and thermal imaging cameras, the system will be useful in detecting and analyzing abnormal activities over a period of time. This system could also be used to detect changes in health, such as balance or walking speed, as well as the ability to alert someone when a possible emergency has occurred, such as a fall. Creating such a system has been a complex effort, requiring a multidisciplinary perspective and collaboration across a variety of domains, including academics, clinicians, industry, and respective end-users.

Furthermore, the CBB helps researchers make an impact within their disciplines by offering a grant application writing and review service, and offers seed funding support to help leverage their innovations and research projects. The CBB also sponsors student-run associations and events focused on bioengineering and biotechnology research, accelerating the growth of the research community at Waterloo.

Past the local level, the CBB makes its impact at the regional level by acting as an enabler of meaningful research partnerships with industry, healthcare, and government, encouraging the formation of partnerships that will help advance research and commercialization. The Centre’s network of connections is vast, maintaining affiliations with corporate partners including Christie Medical Holdings Inc., and clinical relationships with Grand River Hospital, as well

Leur système d’AAD est conçu pour suivre les activités quotidiennes de personnes âgées vivant avec d’autres personnes grâce à des modèles d’apprentissage profond et à des techniques de fusion des données multisensorielles, sans que la personne suivie ait à porter de dispositif sur elle.

L’intégration de renseignements obtenus grâce à des caméras d’imagerie thermique et à des capteurs sans fil novateurs permettra au système de détecter les activités inhabituelles au fil du temps et de les analyser. Le système pourrait aussi servir à détecter des changements de l’état de santé, tels qu’une modification de l’équilibre ou de la vitesse des déplacements, et lancer une alerte en cas d’urgence potentielle, par exemple une chute. La création d’un tel système a été complexe et a exigé l’apport de multiples disciplines et la collaboration d’experts de diverses compétences, dont des universitaires, des cliniciens, des personnes issues du secteur privé et des personnes appelées à en être les utilisateurs.

Tout comme le projet d’AAD, le CBB continue de faire preuve de leadership interdisciplinaire à tous les niveaux afin de favoriser l’excellence en recherche. Au niveau local, le centre constitue une ressource se trouvant à l’avant-plan de la recherche en bio-ingénierie et en biotechnologie. De plus, il organise souvent des activités de réseautage, des colloques, des ateliers d’application des recherches et des forums de discussion, ce qui produit de nombreuses possibilités pour chercheurs et étudiants d’accroître leurs connaissances, d’échanger des renseignements et de demeurer à la pointe de ce qui se fait dans un secteur en constante évolution. En outre, le CBB propose un service de rédaction et de révision des demandes de bourse et aide ainsi les chercheurs à avoir un impact réel au sein de leur discipline; il offre également un financement de démarrage pour les projets de recherche innovants. as affiliations with several other research and commercialization incubators at Waterloo such as Communitech and the Accelerator Centre. The Centre hosts focus days with companies, building bridges between industry and Waterloo researchers to advance research and collaboratively solve industry problems. The importance of supporting multidisciplinary collaboration to drive scientific innovation, fundamental research growth and opportunity is what has enabled the University of Waterloo to be recognized as Canada’s top innovation university, and is ranked among one of the leading innovation hubs in the world.

The Centre’s international presence has also begun to strengthen through the formation of strategic international research partnerships. The CBB maintains a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the University of Twente (The Netherlands) as well as Sorbonne Universités (France) to create an international, transdisciplinary network of researchers between academic institutions. The importance of supporting global partnerships for the advancement of fundamental research offers both researchers and students the opportunity to learn, share knowledge, collaborate, and compete on a global level.

The CBB has had a successful 6 years as a research centre, and looks to facilitate and deepen new and existing international and industry collaborations over the next few years. The Centre intends to broaden its network and cultivate stronger government and hospital relationships to develop a more influential voice in the funding of Canadian healthcare research and technologies.

The CBB’s current role in influencing the growth of the bioengineering and biotechnology research at Waterloo has the potential to open greater opportunities for Canada’s researchers and industry leaders in the near future. Canada is well-positioned to advance its bioengineering and biotechnology sectors, and in the future, the CBB and its researchers hope to be able to make a greater step towards Canada’s growth as a leading centre of innovation.

La conclusion de partenariats de recherche internationaux stratégiques a contribué à renforcer l’image du centre à travers le monde. Le CBB jouit d’un protocole d’entente avec l’université de Twente (Pays-Bas) et avec Sorbonne Universités (France) qui mènera à la création d’un réseau international regroupant des chercheurs de différentes disciplines, provenant de multiples établissements d’enseignement. L’appui de partenariats mondiaux pour l’avancement de la recherche fondamentale offre aux chercheurs comme aux étudiants l’occasion d’apprendre, de partager leurs connaissances et de collaborer à l’échelle internationale. Ils entrent ainsi dans une concurrence de haut niveau.

Le CBB a connu six ans de succès à titre de centre de recherche et souhaite encourager de nouvelles collaborations au sein du secteur et à l’international au cours des prochaines années. Elle souhaite aussi approfondir les relations déjà nouées. Le centre a l’intention d’étendre son réseau et de renforcer ses liens avec les gouvernements et les hôpitaux pour mieux faire entendre sa voix au sujet du financement des technologies et de la recherche en santé.

Le rôle actuel du CBB, qui consiste à accélérer la croissance de la recherche en bio-ingénierie et en biotechnologie à Waterloo, pourrait susciter dans un avenir proche des possibilités encore plus intéressantes pour les chefs de file canadiens de la recherche et du secteur privé. Le Canada est en bonne posture pour faire grandir ses secteurs de la bioingénierie et de la biotechnologie. Le CBB et ses chercheurs espèrent bientôt pouvoir faire encore avancer la situation du pays en tant que grand centre d’innovation.

This past year we received approval for the first and only medication for a chronic dermatology condition called Hidradenitis Suppurativa (HS). HS is a chronic, systemic, immune-mediated skin disease which affects between 1 to 3% of the global population however the diagnosis is often delayed or the condition is misdiagnosed so the true prevalence is unknown. HS is known to produce lesions in the skin that are inflamed, recurrent and chronic. It can have both a psychological and physical impact.

These medicines dramatically improve people’s lives and we continue to work to ensure access to them as well as to new, innovative options for those with unmet needs.

We are particularly focused on continuing to deliver game-changing medicines for patients, and new molecules in the pipeline.

But delivering the medication is the first step. The second is ensuring people are adherent to their medication and treatment plan via our patient support program AbbVie Care.

WHAT DOES ABBVIE CARE OFFER? To date, over 80,000 Canadians have benefitted from our patient support program, which helps with such services as financial coverage, disease education, medication administration and adherence – and we all know medicines don’t work for people who don’t take them. When they do, however, there is real economic benefit to the healthcare system in measures such as reduced hospitalization and increased productivity.

Because every patient is different, AbbVie Care offers on-going and personalised support beyond treatment initiation. For example, when a patient stops following their treatment plan during or after a difficult life event such as a loss in the family, we work with them to get them back on track.

What’s more, over 25% of AbbVie Care members have at some point benefited from financial assistance from AbbVie in situations where the out-of-pocket amount could not be covered by the patient. This often happens when a patient is in between jobs or retires.

WHAT KEY BUSINESS OBJECTIVES AND PRIORITIES HAVE YOU ESTABLISHED FOR ABBVIE? Our priorities in the short term are to stimulate innovation, grow our patient-centricity mindset and actions and continue to contribute to health care sustainability in Canada.

One example of this is a program we created called Patients at Heart. The objective of this program is demystifying clinical trials for Canadians. We want to humanize the process and ensure that participants understand their contribution to science. This is a way to stimulate innovation – bringing new medicines to market – in a way that puts our patients first from the outset.

Regarding health care sustainability, we are committed to partnering with community, government, health care professionals and people living with chronic diseases to advance standards of care and help build a sustainable health care system. We have taken actions such piloting a centralized referral system with the University of Alberta and the Government of Alberta, defining an optimal model of care for hepatitis C patients.

TO WHAT DO YOU ATTRIBUTE ABBVIE’S SUCCESS? I’d say we can attribute it in large part to meaningful innovation and patient inclusivity. From our pipeline through to our involvement with patient associations, the patient is always at the heart of what we do.

We also undertake numerous strategic partnerships to advance the standard of care across our therapeutic areas.

For example, over the past 18 years we have funded 139 radiation oncology research projects with the Canadian Association of Radiation Oncology, representing a more than $3.2 million investment with more projects expected to be funded in 2018. We also made a $15.5 million investment with Structural Genomics Consortium to help scientists better understand how proteins are involved in human diseases, specifically in immunology and oncology.

Coupled with our focus on therapeutic areas with unmet medical needs, these are the reasons for our success to date and will be the cornerstones of our future success.

Canada’s Leading Life Sciences Cluster The City of Mississauga, located within the greater Toronto area, is the first Canadian municipality to develop a life sciences strategy dedicated to shaping the growth and development of this strong sector. Over the next five years, the City of Mississauga is committed to developing an ecosystem dedicated to cultivating and nurturing the commercialization of life sciences innovations in the Canadian market.

The City is building on its existing base by establishing a suite of services and infrastructure, and implementing a series of initiatives tailored to promote the growth of life sciences companies in Mississauga.

The end goal will to become a leading destination for commercialization in Canada.

Mississauga’s life sciences cluster has shown significant growth over the past 10 years. With over 500 companies employing over 24,000 people, Mississauga continues to be the second largest life sciences cluster in Canada by employment.

Over the past decade, the sector has grown significantly with a growth of 20% in terms of the number of life sciences companies, and 9% for total employment.

Today, Mississauga’s life sciences cluster has evolved from a pharmaceutical hub, often termed “Pill Hill”, to a diverse cluster of pharma, biotech, medical devices and other supplier organizations.

This diversity strengthens the cluster and will significantly impact future development and growth not just in Mississauga but Canada wide.

Mississauga’s life sciences companies have created an ecosystem that supports the advancement of innovation and future talent for the industry.

With established services and solid infrastructure in place, Mississauga is an ideal location for U.S. and international companies who are in the late stages of development that want access into the Canadian market for distribution of their products, technologies and services. The City of Mississauga’s Economic Development Office is also well equipped to help service companies when making the move to Mississauga. The Office offers a wide range of services from site location assistance, statistical data and industry information, to providing access to industry networks and problem solving, all of which provide a soft landing for new companies.

With the continuous partnership and collaboration of the life sciences cluster, Mississauga is a proven location for life sciences companies to start, commercialize and grow their business.
