RESOURCES AT YOUR FINGERTIPS. Gordon’s classrooms extend beyond their physical walls. Music majors draw inspiration from Creation as they compose overlooking Coy Pond; other students take a hands-on approach to cutting-edge technology, or enrich their studies in biology cultivating exotic plants in our greenhouse.

The faculty often bring students into their own research endeavors, boosting rĂŠsumĂŠs while offering mentoring opportunities.

Deepen the faith.

WHERE WE LIVE. For the majority of Gordon students, days begin and end with residence life. Your residence hall is more than a place to sleep: through floor dinners, Bible studies, impromptu weekend road trips and countless other communal experiences, the invested friendships that begin in residence halls echo in our classrooms and well beyond graduation.

Many off-campus programs—from Boston to Italy to the Balkans to China—are covered by financial aid, so you can focus on where you’ll go, not how to make it work.

His interest in public service was born out of the energetic drive for development and unity displayed by his generation, and through his political science faculty mentor at Gordon, Tongai found a pathway to contribute to that effort. Today, he is pursuing a master’s degree in public administration at Cornell University, where he has received numerous accolades, including fellowships through the Cornell Institute of Public Affairs and the Institute for African Development. He also was selected to be a Telluride Scholar and is an intern at the UN International Labour Organization. But it was his undergraduate professors who helped him connect his ambitions to his current training. As he says, Gordon “played an integral part in supporting and directing me on the steps to take for life after college.”

SARAH AT A GLANCE Sarah Heltzel CLASS OF 2001 Sarah Heltzel grew up in a house full of music: Cole Porter, Cat Stevens, The Police, hymns, classical music. In high school she began performing in musicals and theater, discovering she was a natural performer who needed refinement and coaching. That’s where Gordon came in: Music Department faculty mentors got her started on the path to a career in performance. Now, when she steps out on stage—with the Boston Philharmonic, Seattle Symphony, or New York City Opera, among others—her voice reveals the beauty and timeless intensity of opera. The New York Times describes her as “vocally striking,” and the Houston Chronicle says she “sets the stage ablaze with her vocal and dramatic pyrotechnics.” A mezzo-soprano, Heltzel honed her craft as a music major at Gordon, and she rounded out her skills amidst the broader liberal arts curriculum. At Gordon, she says, “there was a focus on being excellent at what you do because it honors God, and shares with the rest of the world the beauty and power of his truth,” inspiring her to “be worthy of a wider world.”

“Gordon helps young people discern a vocation, not just a career. They should see the arc of their lives not primarily in terms of credentials, prestige or power, but also in terms of a calling to a higher good. It is not enough to lead an interesting, distinguished or successful life; we should also lead a good one. THOMAS ALBERT HOWARD, PH.D.
