GOPHERS OPEN BIG TEN PLAY AT NORTHWESTERN SATURDAY

The Minnesota Golden Gophers will look to rebound from 35-21 loss at the hands of nationally-ranked Cal Saturday, when they travel to Evanston, Ill. to open Big Ten play against the Northwestern Wildcats.

Minnesota has lost its last two outings vs. Northwestern, by an average of four points. The Gophers fell 4948 in double overtime at Northwestern in 2007 and dropped a 24-17 decision last season at the Metrodome on a Wildcat interception return for a touchdown in the final minute of the game.

It’s the 84th meeting between Northwestern and Minnesota. The Golden Gophers lead the series by a 49-305 count. Prior to losing the previous two meetings, Minnesota had won three straight vs. the Wildcats.

The Big Ten Network will televise the game. Wayne Larrivee will call the play-by-play with Chris Martin as the analyst in the booth. Charissa Thompson will file reports from the sideline.

SCOUTING MINNESOTA Minnesota opened the 2009 campaign with a pair of hard-fought victories and was in another hardfought contest last week. The Gophers were tied 21-21 in the fourth quarter with nationally-ranked California, before falling 35-21.

Junior quarterback Adam Weber returns after taking nearly every snap for the past two-plus seasons.

He set the Minnesota single-season records for passing yardage (2,895), TDs passing (24), completions (258) and attempts (449) in 2007. Two weeks ago, he became the Gophers’ career completions leader and currently has a total of 573. Senior wide receiver Eric Decker set a Minnesota record for career receptions last week and currently has 204. He set a new single-season receptions record last season for the second consecutive year, grabbing 84 in 2008. Decker was a Biletnikoff Award finalist and an All-Big Ten selection in 2008.

Defensively, Minnesota is allowing just less than 23 points per game. The Gophers rank No. 68 in the nation in total defense. Up front, Eric Small (8 total tackles) and Garrett Brown (6 total tackles) anchor the middle of the line. The linebacking corps has had at least one double-digit tackler in each game this season. Nate Triplett, Lee Campbell and Simoni Lawrence are the starters at LB. The secondary returns three starters -- CBs Marcus Sherels and Traye Simmons and safety Kyle Theret.

SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN Northwestern opens the Big Ten slate with a 2-1 nonconference record and is coming off a 37-34 loss at Syracuse. The Wildcats racked up 47 points in their season-opening win over Towson, while getting a lastsecond field goal to top Eastern Michigan.

Northwestern is coached by Pat Fitzgerald, who is in his fifth season as the head coach in Evanston. He is in his 10th season on the Wildcat staff. Fitzgerald has taken Northwestern to three bowls in his four years as head coach.

Offensively, Northwesterern is having a great deal of success through the air. The Wildcats are No. 17 in the nation in passing offense, led by Mike Kafka’s 246.7 yards per game. Defensively, the Wildcats are No. 74 in the nation in scoring defense and No. 53 in total defense. Quentin Davie leads the Northwestern defense, averaging 7.0 stops per game.

u Minnesota saw a streak of six consecutive regular-season wins vs. non-conference opponents snapped last week in its 35-21 loss to Cal. u The Gophers have lost three consecutive Big Ten openers. Minnesota lost to Ohio State on the road last season and fell to the Buckeyes at home in 2007. In 2006, the Gophers fell at Purdue. The last Minnesota victory to open Big Ten play came on Sept. 24, 2005 and was a 42-35 2OT win over Purdue. u The Gophers have performed in front of two straight sellout crowds of 50,805 in their first two games at TCF Bank Stadium. u Minnesota ranks No. 11 in the nation in net punting, with an average of 40.75 net yards per punt. u The Gophers had the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week in each of the first two weeks in 2009.

THE NORTHWESTERN SERIES Saturday’s game will be the 85th gridiron meeting between the University of Minnesota and Northwestern. Minnesota leads the series 49-30-5, but have lost the last two.

The 84 games played to date vs. the Golden Gophers and Wildcats make the Minnesota-Northwestern series the fourth-most played series in the Minnesota history books. The Gophers and Wildcats are charter members of the Big Ten Conference.

LAST TIME VS. NORTHWESTERN (Nov. 1, 2008 - Minneapolis) -- Northwestern scored the game-winning touchdown on a 48-yard interception return with 12 seconds left to play handing No. 20 Minnesota a heartbreaking 24-17 loss.

Wildcat safety Brandon Smith collected a tipped Adam Weber pass and darted 48 yards to tally the winning score. While Smith made the play of the game, it was junior backup quarterback Mike Kafka who was Northwestern’s difference maker. Kafka rushed for 217 yards and accounted for 360 of Northwestern’s 363 yards of total offense.

Weber passed for 327 yards, his fourth career game with 300 or more yards passing. He tossed a careerhigh 51 attempts, tying his best with 31 receptions. Ben Kuznia pulled down seven catches for 98 yards.

The teams battled to a 17-17 halftime tie. Traye Simmons gave the Gophers their first lead of the game at 14-10, when he jumped the route, made a clean pick and returned the INT 23 yards for a TD. Northwestern regained the lead with 6:03 remaining in the half. Kafka escaped from the pocket for a 53-yard run down the left sideline, then connected with Josh Rooks for a 2-yard scoring strike.

LAST TIME OUT (Sept. 19, 2009) -- Jahvid Best ran for a career-high five TDs to lead No. 7/8 California to a 35-21 victory over Minnesota at TCF Bank Stadium. Minnesota’s Eric Decker caught eight passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns and threw for another, but it wasn’t enough for the Gophers.

Cal jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead just seven minutes into the game on touchdown runs of 33 and 2 yards by Best. But Adam Weber found Decker in the front corner of the end zone and Decker absorbed a crushing blow but managed to keep his left foot in bounds and extend the ball over the goal line.

Cal extended its lead to 21-7 with a Best 27-yard scoring scamper with 3:47 left on the clock. The Gophers answered just before the half when Decker caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Weber with 40 seconds left. The Gophers knotted the game at 21-21 just before the end of the third quarter when Decker took a Weber handoff and passed to MarQueis Gray in the corner of the endzone.

Cal regained the lead with 7:14 left on a Best 2-yard run. On the ensuing drive, Weber was picked off

by Mike Mohamed at the Minnesota 44. Cal drove it eight plays for another score to put the game away.

Best scored his fifth touchdown of the day from two yards to account for the final score.

In two short years as the head football coach at the University of Minnesota, Tim Brewster has taken some big steps toward getting Golden Gopher program back to its rightful place in the world of college football.

Brewster has used his positive outlook and boundless energy to bring in two highly-regarded recruiting classes.

On the field, the Gophers returned to postseason play in 2008 and were ranked as high as No. 17 in the nation for part of the season.

In 2008, Brewster’s squad raced out to a 7-1 record to open the season. The Gophers were ranked No. 17 in the BCS at the end of October.

Minnesota took part in the 2008 Insight Bowl, as Brewster led the Gophers to one of the biggest single-season turnarounds of the year.

A renewed emphasis on recruiting may be the most visible phase of Brewster’s plan to help Minnesota football make history again.

That was proven out in February of each of the past two seasons.

Brewster and his staff signed a consensus top-25 recruiting class that some experts even rated among the nation’s top 15 in 2008. The significance of this accomplishment would be difficult to overstate at one the nation’s traditional recruiting powers let alone Minnesota, where the average Rivals ranking for the Gophers’ previous six recruiting classes was 54th. Brewster and his staff followed that up with a 2009 class that ranked in the top third of the nation.

But recruiting is just one building block of a blueprint Brewster developed while helping Mack Brown turn North Carolina from ACC doormat into a national power and rebuild Texas into one of the country’s elite programs.

Brewster came to Minnesota after spending the previous five years as an assistant coach in the National Football League, including the 2005 and 2006 seasons as the tight ends coach of the Denver Broncos.

In addition to his productivity as a college recruiter, Brewster has also built a strong reputation for developing players during his 23-year coaching career.

Last season, wide receiver Eric Decker and defensive end Willie VanDeSteeg both earned first-team All-Big Ten honors. Decker set a Minnesota record for receptions in a season for the second consecutive year and became just the third Gopher wideout to record a 1,000-yard receiving season. VanDeSteeg finished his career as the school’s alltime leader in tackles for loss and finished No. 4 all-time in sacks.

It marked the first time the Gophers had multiple first-team All-Big Ten selections since 2005. VanDeSteeg’s honor was also the first time a Minnesota defender had been voted to the first team since 2004.

In his first season at Minnesota, Brewster mentored then-freshman quarterback Adam Weber, who broke nearly all of the Gophers’ singleseason passing and total offense records during the 2007 season.

Weber continued to improve in his sophomore campaign and was a 2008 second-team All-Big Ten selection.

In all, Minnesota had six athletes earn all-conference accolades in 2008, the most since the Gophers had a half-dozen on the 2005 All-Big Ten squad.

In 2007, Brewster helped coach safety Dominique Barber to secondteam All-Big Ten accolades and personally worked with punter Justin Kucek, expanding his repertoire with the effective and efficient flop punt and helping him evolve into one of the conferences top punters.

Brewster was named Minnesota’s 26th head football coach on Jan. 17, 2007 after spending the previous five seasons as an assistant coach in the National Football League.

The Big Ten Conference is an 11-member NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and Bowl Championship Series league.

The Gophers hold a 331-352-28 record against current and former members of the Big Ten Conference. Minnesota holds a winning record against six of the other 10 current members of the conference. The Gophers have had their most success against Northwestern (49-30-5). Minnesota has struggled the most with Ohio State (7-41-0).

The Big Ten was founded in 1896. Big Ten universities provide approximately $100 million in direct financial aid to more than 8,500 men and women student-athletes who compete for 25 championships, 12 for men and 13 for women.

’CAT CONNECTIONS While none of Minnesota’s coaches have been on staff at Northwestern, a handful of the Gopher staff has State of Illinois and Big Ten ties in former positions.

Head coach Tim Brewster played at the University of Illinois. Co-defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove coached at Wisconsin, Illinois and Illinois State. Co-defensive coordinator Ronnie Lee coached against Northwestern at Michigan and Wisconsin. Offensive line coach Tim Davis coached at Wisconsin. Running backs coach Thomas Hammock played and coached at Northern Illinois.

The Gopher roster also has numerous members from the State of Illinois. Brandon Green is from Chicago, as are Johnny Johnson and Dan Orseske. Curtis Hughes is from Naperville. and Eric Small hails from Joliet.

Northwestern has a handful of connections to Minnesota, as well. Assistant coach Jerry Brown has been on the Minnesota Vikings’ staff. Wildcat offensive coordinator Mick McCall was the head coach at Kyle Theret’s high school alma mater -- J.K. Mullen High School in Denver, Colo. -- from 1994-2000. Meanwhile, red-shirt defensive end Brian Arnfelt (Lake Elmo) and sophomore linebacker Bryce McNaul (Eden Prairie) both call the State of Minnesota home.

126 YEARS AND COUNTING ...

There’s little doubt that the University of Minnesota is one of the most historically significant programs in all of college football. The Golden Gophers are in their 126th season of collegiate football in 2009. The Golden Gophers enter the 2009 campaign with an all-time record of 634-456-44 (.578 winning percentage).

Minnesota has played the fourth-most seasons in the history of college football. Only Rutgers (139), Michigan (129) and Navy (128) have played more. In fact, by the end of 2009, only 21 schools in the nation will have completed at least 120 seasons of college football. Only four schools -- including Minnesota -- will have played 125 years of intercollegiate football by the end of this season.

The Golden Gophers elected six captains prior to the 2009 season. Seniors Garrett Brown, Lee Campbell, Eric Decker, Simoni Lawrence and Eric Small join junior Adam Weber with that distinction this season.

Weber was the first sophomore ever to serve as a team captain at the University of Minnesota last season and is now a two-time captain. Decker is also a two-time team captain.

The Gophers have only had 13 players ever earn the distinction of captain twice in their career. Weber would be the first-ever three-year Gopher captain should he be voted as such next season.

NOTHIN’ BUT NET Through the first three games of the season, Minnesota’s net punting average (punt yardage-minus return yards/touchbacks) ranks No. 11 in the nation. The Gophers’ net punting average is 40.75 yards per punt. The Gophers have punted 16 times with three punts of 50-plus yards and five downed inside the 20-yard line. Opponents are averaging just 3.4 yards per return against the Minnesota punt coverage team.

BAKING TURNOVERS One of the biggest factors in Minnesota’s impressive turnaround last season was the Gophers’ ability to cause turnovers. The Gophers created 31 turnovers last season (16 fumble recoveries, 15 interceptions) to rank No. 11 in the nation. Only Iowa created more turnovers in the Big Ten with 32.

The Gophers also ranked No. 16 in the nation in turnover margin (+0.92 avg.). The Minnesota offense took turned it over just 19 times in 2008 (11 fumbles lost, eight INTs).

Minnesota is minus-three in the turnover battle through its first three games. However, two of the turnovers Minnesota has created have been huge. Linebacker Nate Triplett intercepted a pass in overtime at Syracuse and returned a fumble 52 yards for a score against Air Force last week.

SEEING RED Minnesota is 9-of-9 in the red zone (inside the opponents’ 20-yard line) this season. The Gophers have scored five touchdowns in the red zone and kicked four field goals.

The Gophers are one of only 16 teams remaining in the nation who have scored on every trip inside the red zone this season. Pittsburgh leads the nation at 16-of-16. Only nine of the teams who are 100 percent successful in the red zone this season have double-digit scores and attempts.

The Gophers were 36-of-41 (88 percent) in the red-zone during the 2008 season.

The return game was a definite strength for the Gophers in 2008. Minnesota was the No. 2 team in the Big Ten and ranked No. 15 in the nation in average kickoff return yards. The Gophers averaged 24.04 yards per kickoff return last season. The longest kickoff return last season was turned in by Troy Stoudermire, who went 60 yards at the Insight Bowl vs. Kansas.

The Gophers nearly doubled their punt-return average in 2008, averaging 9.94 yards per return. Minnesota ranked No. 5 in the Big Ten and No. 46 in the nation in punt returns.

WEBER GRILLS UP RECORDS u Gopher quarterback Adam Weber continues to re-write the Minnesota record book. In Week 2, he set the Minnesota record for career completions (his total is now 573). The previous record of 539 completions was held by Cory Sauter (1994-97). Last week, he set the Gopher career record for passing attempts (his total is now 962). Weber set single-season records for passing yards (2,985), completions (258), attempts (449), touchdown passes (24) and total offensive yardage (3,512) in 2007. He now needs 1,097 yards to break the career mark for passing yardage (Bryan Cupito, 2003-06 - 7,446) and just 14 more touchdowns (Bryan Cupito, 2003-06 - 55) to break the career touchdown pass record.

QUARTERBACK NOTEBOOK u Adam Weber is the only quarterback on the Minnesota roster who has ever thrown a collegiate pass. u Weber is 52-of-80 (65.0 percent) for 618 yards since the beginning of the fourth quarter of the season-opener. He was 8-of-23 (34.8 percent) for 75 yards in the first three quarters vs. Syracuse. u Weber threw 19 interceptions in his first season as a starter in 2007. He significantly improved that total in 2008, throwing just eight picks. Weber only had one game with multiple interceptions in 2008.

He tossed three picks last week, but two were in desperation at the end of the game. u Freshman MarQueis Gray is Minnesota’s No. 2 QB. Gray has taken four snaps at quarterback. u Gray scored his first collegiate touchdown vs. Cal last week on a 7-yard pass from Eric Decker. u Gray is a true freshman. He was rated as the No. 3 dual-threat QB in the nation coming out of Indianapolis Ben Davis High School. u Two other signal-callers are listed on Minnesota’s roster -- freshmen Moses Alipate and Adam Lueck.

ESKRIDGE EXPRESS u Sophomore DeLeon Eskridge was the workhorse of the Gopher backfield in 2008, after Duane Bennett went down with a knee injury. Eskridge led the team with 678 yards rushing and seven TDs. He averaged 3.7 yards per carry and 52.2 yards per game. Two weeks ago vs. Air Force, Eskridge scored the first-ever rushing touchdown in TCF Bank Stadium, tying the game at 10-10 with a 7-yard scamper in the fourth quarter. Eskridge leads the team with 4.7 yards per carry and has the team’s longest rush (25 yds).

RUNNING BACK NOTEBOOK u Sophomore Duane Bennett started seven games for Minnesota as a freshman. He started the first two games of 2008, before suffering a season-ending knee injury. Bennett scored on his first touch of the 2009 season, taking a carry around right end for a 16-yard touchdown at Syracuse. Bennett rushed for 78 yards in his first game back since the knee injury, including an average of 5.0 yards per carry. u Eskridge rushed for more than 100 yards twice in 2008, including a season-high 124 yards in Minnesota’s 27-20 win at Illinois. He also had three multiple-touchdown contests. u Sophomore Shady Salamon rushed for 181 yards (3.7 yards per carry) in 2008. u Senior Jay Thomas has overcome two ACL reconstructions. He had just seven carries last season. u Red-shirt freshman Kevin Whaley is also expected to contribute in 2009. u Junior fullback Jon Hoese is a former walk-on. He scored on two of his first three career carries at the Insight Bowl last season. He is averaging 4.8 yards per carry so far this season.

DECKER’S A RECORD-WRECKER u Senior wide receiver Eric Decker was a semi-finalist for the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top receiver in 2008. For the second consecutive season, Decker set the Minnesota single-season record for receptions. He hauled in 67 passes in 2007 and smashed that record with 84 receptions last season.

Decker became just the fourth Gopher receiver ever to compile a 1,000-yard season in 2008, finishing with 1,074 yards to rank No. 2 on the school single-season chart. Last week, Decker became Minnesota’s career receptions leader when he hauled in a 12-yard touchdown pass from Adam Weber in the second quarter vs. Cal. He also recorded his fourth straight 100-yard receiving game (dating back to the 2008 Insight Bowl), which is also a school record.

u Eric Decker was a consensus All-Big Ten selection and an honorable mention All-America selection

by SI.com in 2008. He was chosen as a 2009 Preseason All-American by ESPN’s Ivan Maisel. u Decker’s 138.3 yards and 9.0 receptions per game rank No. 3 and No. 4 in the nation, respectively. u Decker has hauled in at least one reception in 29 consecutive games, ranking No. 7 in the nation. u Decker caught 32.2 percent of Minnesota’s completed passes and his 1,074 yards receiving was 37.7 percent of the team’s total. This season, Decker is at 44.3 percent and 59.3 percent, respectively. u Sophomore wide receiver Troy Stoudermire ranks No. 2 on the squad with 10 receptions. u Stoudermire tallied his first career score with a TD reception in the season-opener at Syracuse. u Senior tight end Nick Tow-Arnett is the squad’s top tight end. He has five receptions this season. He’s averaging 12.6 yards per reception. u Junior wide receiver Hayo Carpenter was rated as the top junior-college player in the country last season by Scout.com. Carpenter made his first career catch vs. California last week. u Carpenter had 93 receptions for 1,675 yards and 16 TDs last season at College of the Canyons. u Sophomore wide receiver Da’Jon McKnight has not tallied a reception in 2009. But he made a big catch two weeks ago, recovering an onside kick with 1:03 remaining to preserve the win over Air Force.

SIZE MATTERS u Of the 10 offensive linemen listed on the Gophers’ two-deep and expected to see action in 2009, seven are 6-foot 3-inches or taller and five top the 300-pound mark. The average height and weight of the top 10 Minnesota offensive linemen is 6-4, 308 pounds. Senior tackle Matt Stommes and junior tackle Jeff Wills are both 6-7. Wills is the heaviest Gopher, tipping the scales at 365 pounds.

OFFENSIVE LINE NOTEBOOK u Minnesota returned a combined 44 starts among all its offensive linemen from 2008 this season.

That number would jump to 57 if Ryan Wynn was included. Wynn’s status for 2009 has yet to be determined after back surgery he underwent on August 24. The Gophers lost only Jason Meinke’s eight starts. u Senior center Jeff Tow-Arnett returns healthy after competing on a torn ACL in six of his starts and seven of his games played last year. He has made every offensive snap this season. u Two offensive line starters for Minnesota did not play for the Gophers last season. Juco transfer Jeff Wills, a 6-7, 365-pounder starred at Lackawanna College in 2008. Notre Dame transfer Matt Carufel practiced with Minnesota, but sat out due to NCAA transfer rules in 2008. u Junior left tackle Dom Alford started the last two contests at left tackle. He took over early in the Syracuse game when Matt Stommes went down with an ankle injury. u Sophomore left guard Chris Bunders has started each of the first three games this season.

BK’S WHOPPER DAY u Sophomore backup defensive tackle Brandon Kirksey led all the Gophers’ defensive linemen with five total tackles, including two tackles-for-loss, in last week’s loss to California. The total number of stops was a career-best performance for Kirksey, who tallied just eight tackles in all of 2008. With a total of nine stops, Kirksey has already bested his season total from last year.

DEFENSIVE LINE NOTEBOOK u Senior starting defensive tackles Garrett Brown and Eric Small team up to provide a formidable force in the middle of the Gopher defense. Small picked up his second sack in as many weeks vs. Cal last week. Brown made three stops vs. the Bears. u Brown and Small have more-than-capable backups behind them in the middle of the Minnesota defensive line. In addition to his career-best outing last week, Kirksey forced the fumble that went back for a TD vs. Air Force. Meanwhile, sophomore Jewhan Edwards notched a pair of stops vs. Cal. u Senior defensive end Barrett Moen came to Minnesota as a walk-on offensive lineman. But he worked his way into the rotation in 2008 and is now a starter. He has five stops in 2009. u Senior DE Cedric McKinley had one stop last week, but it was his second tackle-for-loss this year.

LINEBACKER NOTEBOOK u Triplett’s career night vs. Air Force also earned him Walter Camp Football Foundation National Defensive Player of the Week honors and a nomination for AT&T’s All-America Player of the Week. u Triplett has two of Minnesota’s four turnovers gained this season. In addition to the fumble return vs.

Air Force, he grabbed an interception in overtime at Syracuse in Week One. u The 17 tackles recorded by Triplett (including 12 solo tackles) vs. Air Force were the most by a Gopher defender since Nov. 23, 2002 when Eli Ward tallied 23 stops at Wisconsin. u Triplett was one of Minnesota’s special teams aces over the past two years. He has won the Bobby Bell Award as the team’s top special teams player each of the last two seasons. u Backup linebacker Keanon Cooper tallied a career-best seven stops last week in the first extended action of his career. u Lee Campbell and Simoni Lawrence are No. 2 and 3, respectively, on the team in total tackles.

SECONDARY NOTEBOOK u Opposing offenses will have to pick their poison with the Gopher cornerbacks. Marcus Sherels ranked fourth in the Big Ten and 25th in the nation with 13 passes defended (2 INT, 11 PBU) in 2008. Traye Simmons was a 2nd-team All-Big Ten selection in 2008, ranking No. 1 in the Big Ten and No. 5 in the nation in passes defended (4 INT, 14 PBU). u Simmons has already broken up three passes this season. u Theret was No. 2 on the team with three INTs and No. 3 on the squad with eight pass PBUs in 2008. u Junior safety Kim Royston transferred from Wisconsin in 2008, had to walk-on and was unable to compete due to Big Ten transfer rules. He has 12 stops, including eight two weeks ago vs. Air Force. u Junior CB Ryan Collado started in place of the injured Marcus Sherels the last two weeks. BLAKE’S BANG-UP JOB u Senior punter Blake Haudan found it he was going to be punting vs. California last Saturday about 12 hours before the game. Freshman Dan Orseske found out he was ill with mononucleosis the night before the game, pressing Haudan into duty. His first career punt pinned Cal inside its own 20-yard line.

He averaged 42.1 yards per punt, had two of more than 50 yards and two inside the 20.

u Junior long snapper Ryan Coleman has been very consistent since taking over the long-snapping duties last season. He has delivered 21 successful long snaps through two games this season (16 punt, 6 FG, 7 PAT). Coleman made 128 snaps in 2008, with only one bad snap. u Junior placekicker Eric Ellestad remained perfect on PATs (7-7), hitting all three attempts last week.

He is 5-of-6 on field goals, with the lone miss being tipped at the line on a missed assignment up front.

TCF BANK STADIUM FACTS

When the Gophers hosted the Air Force Academy on Sept. 12, it marked the first time since Nov. 21, 1981 that college football has been played on campus at Minnesota.

• TCF Bank Stadium was designed as an open-air, horseshoe-shaped bowl with a collegiate look and feel. The stadium is oriented to take advantage of the views of downtown Minneapolis.

TCF Bank Stadium is the first Big Ten Stadium built in nearly 50 years. Beaver Stadium (Penn State) and Memorial Stadium (Indiana) were both built in 1960. TCF Bank Stadium will be just the second new stadium built in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) and the first in a BCS conference since 1998. Akron also christened a brand-new stadium this season.

• The University exceeded its initial fund-raising goal of $86 million.

• The brick façade and arches resemble that of Minnesota’s previous on-campus football venue, Memorial Stadium, which hosted its final game on Nov. 21, 1981.

• Construction began on TCF Bank Stadium on July 11, 2007. It took over 1.3 million work hours to complete the project by July , 2009.

• The main high definition video measures approximately 48 feet high by 108 feet wide and boasts Daktronics HD-16 technology.

• The main high definition video board is the third largest in all of college athletics in terms of square footage. Only Texas and Mississippi State have larger boards.

• The main video board screen is made up of more than four million LED lights that if placed end to end would extend for 47.5 miles.

In May 2006, the Minnesota legislature made the stadium a reality, approving the $288.5 million facility.

The stadium holds 50,805 fans and is an open-air facility. Construction began during the summer of 2007.

GOPHER VICTORY WALK

• Populous (formerly HOK Sport) served as the primary architect for the building, while Mortensen Construction was the general contractor.

The Golden Gopher football program saw a new tradition take shape in 2007, with the advent of the “Gopher Victory Walk.” Prior to each game, the entire Minnesota football team, led by the Minnesota Marching Band, will walk through the fans at the McNamara Alumni Center, cross Oak Street and head into TCF Bank Stadium.

• In excess of 8,800 tons of structural steel was used in the project, with 97 percent recycled steel.

Each Gopher Victory Walk will begin approximately two hours prior to kickoff.

The Minnesota Football program is encouraging fans to participate in the Gopher Victory Walk throughout the season, by lining the entire path from the McNamara Alumni Center to the stadium and greeting the players as they arrive on game day.

• TCF Bank Stadium contains 24,000 yards of cast-in-place concrete, which is enough concrete to pour a four-inch thick, five-foot wide sidewalk from Minneapolis to Rochester, Minn. (74 miles).

• The masonry includes 525,000 units of concrete block and 760,000 units of full and thin brick.

• There is 72,753 SF or approximately 1.7 acres of glass in TCF Bank Stadium, enough to cover more than 1.25 football fields.

• There are 9,185 Minnesota Block “M”s in TCF Bank Stadium.

• The foundation of TCF Bank Stadium is supported by 2,133 drilled piles, which is equivalent to 15.5 miles of piles.
