ALAN MATTHEWS Media Officer Ed Painter speaks with the chairman ahead of the opening game of the season and the hard work going on behind the scenes.

Today we welcome for the first home game of the season Newton Aycliffe. We also welcome their officials, players and supporters. We hope they enjoy their short stay here and have a safe journey home.

Well, what can be said about the most worrying seven months I have known. Not only in sport but in every facet of life. This dreadful disease has caused havoc on a world wide scale to millions of people around every region of our country. So far as football is concerned last season ended early and never took place with leagues being expunged and statistics being removed from record books.

Through it all though, just like our own club committee, friends and colleagues have pulled together and thanks to their hard work and help we have survived and are ready to face the rigours of another season in the EBAC Northern League.

Who's to say we wont have another outbreak, after all we still have a long way to go. So this is why we have new rules and regulations. It is a pain having to produce tickets for matches.

It's also painful to have players and supporters travelling to games independently, and not being able to mingle as before on the terraces the way we all used to do. However it well may

have to continue for some considerable time until this virus is beaten, Until then we will always welcome new friends and old here at North Shields.

So back to today. We did play Aycliffe twice last season and managed to win both games. I have to say though they were probably the toughest two matches of the season with late goals getting us the points on offer. Let's hope today's is just as exciting with a similar result.

THE EDITOR Welcome to the Daren Persson Stadium for the first league game of the season against Newton Aycliffe.

It has been a long time coming hasn’t it?

When the 2019/20 season was brought to an end, and the wider society was feeling the effects of Covid-19, it was very hard to see how non-league football could return.

Thankfully, despite the situation not having been fully dealt with, things are safe enough for us to return, so long as we ALL follow the Government’s guidance regarding the safe return of football at our level.

You will notice hand sanitising stations situated around the ground, a carefully thought up system to allow players and fans to remain as safe as possible, and the introduction of cashless payments at our bar.

It is also amazing that fans have been allowed to attend games again, albeit in a limited capacity. At the start of preseason, we were playing behind closed doors and neither myself, the management team or the players could wait

until we could welcome you back, Football without supporters is just not the same, is it?

Credit must of course be paid to you, the supporters. You have been through the ringer a bit this summer, waiting to see when you can follow your local team. I have also been impressed by how well you have adopted our new ticketing system, which means only fans with paper tickets can enter the ground on a match day. Speaking personally, I was anxious about frustrations rising if fans weren’t able to enter a game, however, you have been magnificent and deserve a lot of credit. You have all done yourselves proud once again!

Today we welcome Newton Aycliffe to the Daren Persson Stadium, a team who finished only one place below us in fifth.

I don’t think it is unfair to say that both teams punched a little above their weight at times last season, so to start as strongly as possible is an absolute must for us and them.

At the time of writing this, neither ourselves, or Newton Aycliffe have completed the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round games, against Marske United and Guisborough Town respectively. Here is to hoping both sides come through unscathed and can enjoy a hearty cup run.

On a side note, I offer my best wishes to both Consett AFC and Hebburn Town who will be playing their 2019/20 FA Vase semi-finals today against Bitton and Corinthian respectively. The Northern League has once again proved to be a seriously strong competitor in this competition so fingers crossed one, if not both, make it to Wembley.

Once again, thankyou for your support, and thankyou for being so understanding. I hope we can get that win today!

Anth Myers (Defender) Anth joined the Robins ater a two-year spell with Seaham Red Star. The versatile defender is powerful in the air, a great passer of the ball and strong in the tackle. Can also play in the centre of midfield. Also played for Jarrow Roofing and Hebburn Town.

Joined North Shields FC midway through the 2017/18 season from near rivals Whitley Bay. Marc has managed Whitley Bay Reserves before later becoming the first team manager. Also currently works at TyneMet College. He is also a UEFA B licensed coach.

Bradley joined the Robins in 2019 to provide stiff competition to Greg for the number one jersey.

Formerly of Blyth Spartans, the young keeper excelled when called upon in his debut away against Guisborough Town. He will be looking to continue his rapid progression.

Anthony Woodhouse (Assistant)

Wayne Buchanan (Defender)

Joined in 2018 from Whitley Bay. Began his career for East End Boys Club, going on to having trials for Sunderland. Signed from Whitley as Player/ Manager with Fenton, Bowsa and Brian Smith as assistants.

Made 27 appearances for club, scoring 2 goals.

Steve Swinyard (Coach) The UEFA B licensed Coach has worked in the pro game for 5 years with Newcastle United as Head of Safeguarding. Steve has been Assistant to Woody before at Newcastle Benfield whilst also enjoying a spell as a coach at Northern League rivals Ashington FC.

Graeme Scott (Physio)

Wayne is an experienced centre half who joined the from Ashington in 2019. He counts Gateshead, Blyth Spartans, Morpeth Town, South Shields and others amongst his former clubs. A no-nonsense player who adds strength and discipline to the back line.

Nick Cassidy (Defender) Nick joined us in 2019 after a successful two-season spell with Division One rivals Consett, where he played a pivotal role in their Durham Challenge Cup victory. A strong and versatile member of the team, he is comfortable in defence or midfield.

Jack Donnison (Defender)

The defender, who has experience playing military football for the Royal Marines and the Royal Navy, has previous experience of the Northern League, having spent four seasons with Darlington Railway Athletic; now of the Wearside League.

Rhys Williams (Defender) Rhys joins the Robins after spending last season with Div Two side Washington, where he was their captain.

A combative defender with bags of potential, Rhys also played for Hebburn in their promotion from Division Two, winning Players Player of the Year.

Andrew Cartwright (Defender) New recruit joins The Robins after spending two years in Australia playing for Western Knights Soccer Club. The former Sunderland AFC youngster shone through the ranks before joining Blyth Spartans.

Cartwright has also played for England C.

Ryan Carr (Midfielder) Nippy attacker with a keen eye for goal. He progressed through the ranks at AFC Farsley. Now playing in his native North East, racking up over 200 appearances for The Robins and always able to chip in with a goal or two where needed with over 60 goals.

Jamie Clark (Midfielder)

Joined the club in 2019 as part of the medical team.

He has worked for North East Ambulance Service for 24 years and has been a paramedic for 14 years, now as a Clinical Operations Manager. Graeme is also a coach for Cullercoats FC.

Jack is a solid full back whose energy and love of a tackle has made him a firm fan favourite at Shields. He has become a consistent performer in defence but is also good at going forward too. One of the longest serving players in the Robins squad.

Another product of Tyne Met College and was a member of the FA Youth Cup squad last two seasons.

A scorer of fantastic goals with his left foot, he has the potential to progress if he stays focused. Made his first team debut at home to Stockton Town.

Greg joined Shields in 2018 from Team Northumbria, shortly after they resigned from the league. He is a top keeper who is a rock at the back for this Shields team.

Began playing at Sunderland. Selected as a member of the English University Men’s squad for 2020.

Chris is a strong, versatile defender with experience from captaining Whitley Bay to playing for Berwick Rangers in the Scottish Leagues. More recently playing for Morpeth Town.

Chris has scored some spectacular goals during his playing career.

Extremely talented young midfielder with lots of skill and an attacking mindset.

Made the transition from junior to senior football with ease and is tipped to go very far if he continues to progress at a rapid rate.

Another product of the Tyne Met system.

Adam Forster (Midfielder) Adam rejoined the club after a spell at Blyth AFC, The former Blyth Spartan was a vital member of the North Shields side that won the FA Vase and Senior Cup. Scored the extra time winner against Glossop North End in the FA Vase Final in 2015. First Team captain.

David Hall (Midfielder) David joined North Shields from rivals Whitley Bay in 2018. He has worked with Marc during his time at Whitley Bay, who was keen to bring him to the Robins.

A rock in the centre of the pitch, David ability to spread the ball is second to none.

Gary Ormston (Midfielder) A goal scoring midfielder who is comfortable across the centre of the park. His experience will bring on the younger players and his 100% attitude will always be a huge plus Has even played at centre back when needed. Formerly of Consett, Whitley Bay and Dunston UTS.

David Robinson (Midfielder) Another quality addition to the midfield area. The former Seaham and Blyth AFC captain is a box-to-box midfielder that will leave everything out on the pitch for the team. He is a player that will certainly chip in with goals and assists throughout the season.

Paul Robinson (Midfielder) Paul joined the Robins from Morpeth Town and has bags of top level experience.

Formerly a Vase winner three times with Whitley Bay, he has also played for Blyth Spartans. He is the king of the chop who doesn’t scoring anything but quality goals.

Craig Spooner (Midfielder) The exciting midfielder returns to the club from Blyth Spartans for his second spell. He is a very creative player who controls the game. The former Newcastle United product certainly knows where the net is and contributes to lots of assists too!

Paul Van-Zandvliet (Midfielder) Local lad Paul is a box to box midfielder with a powerful style of play. Was a member of the Northern Counties Championship winning squad with Northumberland Schools County.

His performances attracted the attention of Sheffield United where he played twice in victories over Hull City and Leeds Utd.

Gareth Bainbridge (Forward) A Shields legend of the modern era, Gareth has delivered crucial goals at venues including Wembley and St James Park. Since joining from Ashington, Gaz became a vital member of the team, breaking Don Winskill’s post war goal scoring record, scoring 164 goals.

Callum Smith (Forward) Callum is an exciting left winger who came through the Newcastle United setup, impressing as a member of their under 23 squad. After leaving St James’ Park, he played for Hull City and Dunston UTS before signing for Shields midway through the 2019/20 season.

Kyle Patton (Forward) Kyle is an attacking forward who previously played for Durham City, Whitley Bay, Shildon and Bishop Auckland. An exciting talent who has brought goals to the side. He has plenty of league experience and is a great fit for the club.

Kyle was the 2019/2020 top goalscorer.

Dan Wilson (Forward) The powerful centre forward returns for his second spell for the club after time at Blyth AFC and Seaham Red Star. The forward has lots of pace and strength and gives opposing defenders a tough time with his non stop energy and great hold up play.

DIVISION ONE PREVIEW Stockton Town, much like West Allotment Celtic, were denied a hard earned promotion, when Covid-19 decimated the non-league calendar. They open their 20/21 campaign with a home tie against a Guisborough Town team which performed well last season, finishing seventh.

A whopping 13 points behind in second were Shildon, who were also denied the chance to play at a higher level. They begin their season with a home game against a West Auckland Town team which has lost Amar Purewal and Nathan Fisher to transfer and injury respectively.

In the Final promotion space last season were Hebburn Town, but with their FA Vase Semi Final game against Corinthian scheduled for today, they begin their season a week later.

With North Shields and Newton Aycliffe facing each other, and with Consett also starting a week later due to their FA Vase Semi Final against Bitton, the next highest side from last season were Newcastle Benfield.

Opening weekend, Sunderland RCA will welcome next door neighbours Ryhope CW to Meadow Park.

Neither team will be looking to begin their season with a defeat to their closest rivals.

Having finished in eighth, following a late run of good form, they will travel north to face an Ashington side which signed Ben Harmison during the summer.

After a very strong start last season, Billingham Town stuttered late on, having lost Craig Hutchinson to transfer. Hoping to start strongly once again, they will travel to a Thornaby team which recently pulled of the coup of signing former Middlesbrough keeper Dimi Konstantopoulos.

Bishop Auckland, two seasons ago, finished third in the table, back when only one team could win promotion. Last season, they performed inconsistently, finishing in eleventh. A home tie against Northallerton Town, bottom of the league last season, will prove to be a tougher test than some may think.

During the summer, Seaham Red Star lost a plethora of their squad, including Dan Wilson, David Robinson, Anthony Myers, Chris Bannon, Richard Coulson, Jordan Fry and Morgan Dart. Luke Sullivan, Jason Blackburn, Dan Hawkins and Nathan Lawrence have moved to the club and will likely make their debuts against Mark Convery’s Whickham.

Perhaps the longest journey of the opening weekend will be made by our near neighbours Whitley Bay. Under the stewardship of Derek Forrest and Tony Fawcett, they make the long journey to Penrith, a team which once again struggled for form last season. Forrest’s and Fawcett’s new-look Whitley Bay team will be looking to gel quickly, with another tough Northern League campaign awaiting the Seahorses.

NORTH SHIELDS CLUB HISTORY North Shields Athletic was originally formed in 1896, and played initially in the South Shields & District league. They progressed through the Northern Combination, Northern Alliance and North Eastern League and became a major force in North East Football, outside the Football League, moving to play at Hawkey’s Lane around 1900. They originally joined the Northern Alliance, before switching to the North Eastern League in 1908.

The club emerged as Preston Colliery F.C. after the Great War, reverting to North Shields A.F.C. in 1928. They enjoyed tremendous local support with a record 12,800 watching the local derby with South Shields in October 1936.

Shields won the North Eastern League title in 1950, before the league folded in 1958. Spells in the Midland League and Northern Counties league followed before the club joined the Northern league in the 1964-65 season, finishing third at their first attempt.

The Robins moment of crowning glory came in 1969, when they won the FA Amateur Cup by beating Sutton United in front of 47,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium. Shields were a goal down after only four minutes but won with second half strikes from Richie Hall and Brian Joicey – both laid on by Orrick, a shipyard worker from Byker. The club, which also won the Northern League title and Challenge Cup that same year, were declared joint holders of the European Amateur Cup the following season when two games against Italian Side Almas resulted in a level aggregate score. In 1982, the Robins won 1-0 at Halifax Town in the FA Cup First Round, Bede McCaffrey scoring the all-important goal that year. Walsall were the visitors to Appleby Park in the second round, for only the second time in the club’s history and left with a 3-0 victory.

Having moved into the national pyramid by joining the NCEL in 1989, North Shields earned promotion to the Northern Premier League by winning the title in 1992. However, financial problems arose, which meant Appleby Park had to be sold to and lead to the club folding. However, they almost instantly reformed as a new club, thanks to the efforts of local people and many of the current committee. The club, headed by new chairman Richard Slade, sought and gained immediate admission to the Second Division of the Wearside League. They were promoted to the top flight as runners-up in their first season, briefly reverting back to North Shields Athletic for four seasons. They enjoyed success in local cup competitions, too, the Shipowners Cup and NFA Senior Bowl added to that title in the 1998/99 treble-winning season.

In 1999, the club moved to Ralph Gardner Park, now known as the Daren Persson Stadium, and began to develop the ground to meet the Northern League standards. Once again known as North Shields FC, the club began to kick on, league runners-up in 2000/01 and winners by eight points the following season. They also continued to collect silverware elsewhere, winning the Monkwearmouth Charity Cup in 2001 and again in 2003. After a fifteen-year absence, the Robins gained promotion back into the Northern League in 2004 following their third Wearside League title and a further Shipowners Cup triumph.

After ten years in Division Two, the club belatedly returned to the top tier having narrowly missed out in 2010/11. The Robins shattered records en route to the 2013/14 championship including the Daren Persson Stadium attendance which was 1,312 for the visit of West Allotment Celtic and the presentation of the 2nd division trophy. But better was to come as the Robins swept past the likes of Phoenix Sports, Erith & Belvedere and Highworth Town to reach the 2015 FA Vase final at Wembley. In front of almost 10,000 fans, Shields went behind to Glossop North End, but a late equaliser by Gareth Bainbridge and Adam Forster’s extra-time finish clinched the coveted trophy for Graham Fenton’s men. The club also finished fourth in division one to cap a memorable season.

The following season 2015-6 Shields finished fifth in the league whilst lifting the Northumberland Senior Cup beating Blyth Spartans 4-3 in a thrilling Final at St James Park. Gary Ormston opened the scoring followed by a Gareth Bainbridge brace with Ryan Carr notching a dramatic last minute winner. Manager Graham Fenton left the club in September 2016 to join South Shields, with Jon McDonald replacing him as manager. McDonald kept North Shields at the top until early April, losing out to South Shields in the title race. North Shields also lost the Senior Cup to Blyth and the League Cup to South Shields after which Jon McDonald left the club.

Shields moved to appoint Assistant Manager, Brian Smith as the new Manager, with Gary Ormston stepping up as Assistant and Andy Gowans joining the coaching set up alongside Wilf Keilty. Brian Smith left the club in February 2018 to be replaced by ex Whitley Bay boss Marc Nash. Nash brought with him Anthony Woodhouse who was welcomed back to his old stamping ground as assistant. The duo marked their debut in charge with a sensational 6-5 victory over Jarrow Roofing after the Robins were trailing 5-2 late in the game. With Steve Swinyard coming in as coach the new management team guided the club to a final 8th position as the season closed. The latest campaign of 2019-2020 before halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the side saw an impressive 4th placed finish with games in hand on the teams above. DIVISION TWO PREVIEW After agonisingly missing out on a well-earned promotion last season, having stormed away with at the top of Division Two, West Allotment Celtic will be looking to get their 2020/21 Division Two campaign off to a flying start, when they host Jarrow at East Palmersville Sports Pavilion, having moved from their old home at Druid Park.

Redcar Athletic, who were sat in second before the season was brought to an end, face a much tougher task, when they travel to the Sir Tom Cowie Millfield Ground to face a Crook Town side who were sat in third.

After a late season surge, Billingham Synthonia, who saw their manager Dave Dickson depart for near rivals Billingham Town, finished fourth last season and would take the same again this time around. A trip to Easington Colliery will prove to be their first test of the season.

Heaton Stannington, who always seem to be there or there abouts at the right end of the table, will host Carlisle City at Grounsell Park,

the better pitches in the league, will feel reasonably confident of picking up an early three points against a Washington side which only finished above struggling Brandon United and Durham City last season.

Having spent the majority of the season in the top four, Ryton & Crawcrook Albion slipped come the end of the season and finished sixth. After their management team of Tony Fawcett and Simon Moody departed for Whitley Bay, former Hazelrigg Victory coach Mark Bullock will be tasked with rebuilding a squad which largely followed Fawcett out the door.

They will be facing a Bedlington Terriers team which struggled.

Tow Law Town, who were drawn to face North Shields in the First Qualifying Round of the A Vase, a game which takes place at the Daren Persson Stadium, will be up against an exciting Newcastle University side which finished mid table last season.

They will come up against a Durham City side which has seen a massive overhaul since Didier Agathe and Tom Wade took control off the team over the summer.

Chester-le-Street Town will be looking to improve upon a disappointing campaign last season, having struggled to finish as high as 14th.

Today they travel to the Nissan Sports Complex to face a Sunderland West End side who will be embarking on their second season in Northern League Division Two. The two sides were separated by seven points in 2019/20.

Managed by former Team Northumbria manager, Newton Aycliffe have been a side transformed under Colin Stromsoy. Before his arrival, the Newtonians were a side which often frequented the middle of the Ebac Northern League Division One table. However, last season, he had his side sitting in fifth place, with outside hopes of claiming a promotion place, before Covid-19 bought a premature end to the 2019/20 campaign.

Last season, when these two sides faced off against each other, North Shields gained the upper hand, doing the double over their Division One rivals. At the home leg, hosted at the Daren Persson Stadium, a late goal from loanee Callum Patton helped the Robins claim a late 3-2 win on a rain-affected pitch. In the away leg, hosted at the Beaumont Landscapes Stadium, the game looked destined for a 0-0 draw, only for Kyle Patton, brother of Callum, to score a winning goal with only seconds remaining in the game.

On top of an already strong squad, including the likes of Marc Costello, Andrei-Vasile Ardelean, Liam Jarvie and Adam Burnicle, Stromsoy has strengthened his Newton Aycliffe side, signing the former Team Northumbria and Hebburn Town forward Ben Dibb-Fuller.

Three first half goals from Marske United saw the Robins fall to a 3-0 away defeat in the extra preliminary round of the FA Cup. Glen Butterworth’s early opener gave the Seasiders the lead, after a strong start from the hosts.

Their lead was doubled not long afterwards, with Matty Tymon firing home from close range, following a back post header.

Shields found themselves three goals down at the break when Tymon stroked the ball home from inside the six yard box.

And despite a much improved second half performance from the Robins, it was too little too late, as their FA Cup journey ends before it even began.

After an even opening to the game, it was the hosts who had the first clear chance on goal, with Greg Purvis needing to be alert to tip Adam Boyes’ effort around the post after ten minutes.

But only seven minutes later, Marske took advantage of space in the Shields box to take the lead, with the ball being cut back to Butterworth, who fired into the back of the net from inside the box.

The Seasiders were starting to turn the screw and in the 21st minute, the lead was almost doubled, only for an Adam Wheatley header to be cleared off the line by Ryan Carr.

However, they were soon able to add a second to their score when in the 25th minute, a deep cross was headed down at the far post, before Tymon was able to hammer the ball home from a few yards out.

Shields were rocking now and almost conceded a third in the 28th minute, after Tymon intercepted an under hit back pass but after squaring the ball to Boyes, a critical deflection on the former Spennymoor Town striker’s shot took the ball around the post.

On the half hour mark, the Seasiders had a deserved third goal, with a cross from the left missed by everyone before Tymon grabbed his second of the day by stabbing the ball home at the far corner.

It took until just before the half time break for Shields to register their first serios chance on goal, when Carr headed a deep swinging cross inches wide of Ryan Catterick’s goal after 38 minutes.

The hosts began the second half as they ended the first and in the 51st minute, Tymon rolled the ball past Purvis but an excellent goal line clearance from Myers denied the former Whitby Town striker a hattrick.

Shields made a number of changes in search of a way back into this game. In the 59th minute, four minutes after coming on, Cam Cunningham almost gave the visiting supporters what they wanted, whipping a freekick inches wide of the top left corner.

After a long stoppage in the game, because of a nasty injury for Kyle Patton, the Robins kept pressing forwards and in the 75th minute, Dan Wilson held the ball up on the edge of the area before teeing up Carr, but the midfielder could only blaze the ball over.

One minute later, Cunningham came even closer to reducing the Marske lead to two, but the young midfielder saw his goal bound effort deflected around the post by Catterick, who had little to do in the game up until this point.

With ten minutes left on the clock, the Marske defence was starting to suffer as the visitors desperately searched for a way back into the game. David Robinson almost notched his first goal for his new club but like others before him, he saw his effort dribble wide of goal.

Marske almost tied this game up with five minutes to go, when Boyes tried a speculative volley from around 35 yards out, but Purvis was able to watch the ball drift off target and behind.

Despite a late flurry of chances for Shields, they weren’t able to penetrate the Marske defence and like the last two seasons, they fall out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle.

IN MEMORY North Shields Football Club would like to take a moment to commemorate the life of Alan Wilkinson, who sadly passed away.

As a long-time fan of the Robins, we would often see Alan taking his place amongst the other regulars, cheering the team on through thick and thin. It goes without saying that everyone associated with our club was absolutely devastated to hear of his passing and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and other loved ones.

ANDREW CARTWRIGHT Media Officer Ed Painter speaks with Andrew about his first impression of the club and the his family history with North Shields Football CLub What do you look for when you are building a competitive football team, regardless of the level that team is playing at?

Firstly, you need experience, someone who has been there and done it all before, as well as someone who is determined, passionate about the game, and last but not least, a team player.

Well, when Marc Nash set about adding to a side that finished fourth last season, he knew that only the best of players would be suitable.

Step forward Andrew Cartwright, a fullback by trade who joined the club after a year with Australian side Western Knights SC. “First of all, my dad and brother played for Shields, with my dad signing for Newcastle from there. So I’ve always fancied playing for them after seeing the fans when I used to watch

my brother,” said the former Sunderland AFC and Blyth Spartans right back after signing for the Robins.

“Then when I was still out in Australia, I spoke to Nashy and he seemed keen to get me on board.

“It makes me really proud to play for a team that my family have represented.

“The boys have been great.

They’ve been really welcoming and are a tight knit bunch, which will only help us when we are on the pitch.”

Having been able to retain the majority of last seasons’ squad, the addition of Cartwright, alongside Dan Wilson, Anthony Myers and David Robinson, Nash will now have to select a match day squad from a whopping 24 players.

“Healthy competition is a positive in any squad,” claimed the full back.

“I think if people are too comfortable, then they won’t perform to their best.

“I expect to be out of the team if I am not performing, as the results on Saturdays are the priority.”

Today sees the Robins begin Their 2020/21 campaign with a tough home fixture against a Newton Aycliffe side which finished one place below them last season.

This is then followed by a busy opening month for the club, with a total of seven games, at the time of writing this, needing to be played.

However, with the idea of wanting to make a fast start an obvious one, Cartwright knows that what happens in September wont define them.

He said, “a strong start is always helpful but it’s a marathon, not a sprint. We need to be consistent for the full season, and

that’s why having such a great squad will help.”

Saturday will represent the first opportunity for Cartwright to experience a capacity crowd filling the Daren Persson Stadium, with crowd levels set at 300 due to the Government’s and FA’s Guidance for the safe return of spectators to non-league football stadia.

Newcastle Blue Star gave the perfect opportunity to test their Covid-19 action plan. It was also only Cartwright’s second home game for the club.

“I’ve heard good things about the fans at Shields and the first game against Blue Star showed how great they are.” boasted the defender.

“I just hope to be playing in front of them on a regular basis”

To be allowed this number of fans, the club had to first host a home friendly with a crowd level of no more than 150. This was to help the club to prove that the club could cater to that number of people in a safe and socially distant environment.

In the opening month of the season, North Shields are set to welcome Newton Aycliffe, Billingham Town, Tow Law Town (FA Vase), Shildon and Hebburn Town to NE29.

Shields couldn’t have asked for much more of a tough start to the season, with

only Billingham Town finishing outside the top five last season (Newton Aycliffe 5th, Shildon 2nd and Hebburn Town 3rd).

The Robins also enjoyed mixed fortunes against those sides last season, winning three (twice against Newton Aycliffe and once against Shildon), drawing once (against Billingham Town) and losing twice (against Shildon and FA Vase semi-finalists Hebburn Town).

But with the additions Nash has made, there is an optimism that the club can maintain the promotion push that saw them inches away from what would have been a special campaign.

prove to be crucial in achieving this, as the defender can almost act as an extra coach on the field.

“The effect that certain coaches had on me, when I was young, showed me the importance of positive coaching.

“So I wanted to replicate that for others,” said Cartwright when asked about his ambitions beyond playing.

“I am currently coaching full time and it’s been a really busy start with 72 children at my first holiday camp.

Despite being snowed under at work, there are no complaints from this ambitious future coach, who isn’t afraid of plugging his business at every given opportunity.

“I’ve enjoyed it so far and if anyone wants any sessions, follow @andrewcartwrightfc on twitter and Facebook” If Andrew is anything like he is as a player, then success as a manager or coach seems to be inevitable.

But with many years still left in the tank, were are likely to see plenty of him bombing down the right hand side, causing defenders all sorts of grief.

“I prefer to take each game as it comes and just enjoy playing each game.

“I think the season the lads had last year was very successful and it would be great to continue that into this year.”

2015/2016 was quite simply the most successful season in Newton Aycliffe’s history. The highlight was winning the Durham Challenge Cup, but added to that we had our best ever runs in the FA Cup (2nd Qualifying Round Replay) & FA Vase (5th Round-last 16). We also had our highest finish in the Ebac Northern League (6th).

Having smashed their way into the Start To Learn Northern League in emphatic fashion – winning back-to-back league titles; Durham Alliance (2007-08) and the Wearside League (2008-09) – Allan Oliver’s side built on their inaugural campaign at Northern League level by topping the table for a huge eight months as they finished seven points clear of their nearest rivals in the 2010-11 title race. It is difficult to find the definitive date when Newton Aycliffe Football Club was formed. There is evidence of a Newton Aycliffe Rangers in 1951 playing in the Darlington and District League.

In 1954-57 there was a NAFC playing in the Auckland and District League, firstly at Sugar Hill sports ground and then Burn Lane sports ground. There then appears to be a gap.

There is a report in the Newtonian in 1965 setting out the Newton Rangers Club was formed in 1961/2 and playing home games in Darlington. A further team, Newton Aycliffe AFC was formed in 1964 (as a soccer section of the NA sports club, playing its first season in 1964/5 in the Darlington Weekend League, playing home matches at Simpasture playing fields. Newton Aycliffe Rangers later played on a pitch near Aycliffe Stock Car Stadium.

In 1967/68 The Rangers won the Auckland and District League Div 2 Championship (playing home games at Croxdale Welfare).

By 1968-69 they had moved to Moore Lane as part of Newton Aycliffe Sports Club and had a reserve team in the Auckland and District league Division 2.

1969 saw Aycliffe Rangers reach the Semi Final of the Durham Challenge Cup, losing to Ferryhill Athletic after beating another Northern League side Stanley United on a very heavy Moore Lane pitch!

In 1969-70 a team named Newton Aycliffe SC played in the Auckland and District League Div 1 and a reserve team played in Div 2. This team won the League Challenge Cup in both 196970 and 70-71.

As Newton Aycliffe FC the team later moved to the Teesside League and joined the Wearside League in 1984 before folding from it during the 1993-94 season.

And although the current club was re-formed a number of years ago, competing successfully in the Darlington & District League its re-emergence from 2007-08 was nothing short of phenomenal.

The club’s development off the field has been as rapid as that on it, as Moore Lane Park gradually transformed into a ground befitting a club at Step 5 of the National League “pyramid” System – the club averaged 191 attendance in 2009-10, the fifth highest average crowd in the Northern League and 222 in 2010-11, again bettered by just four teams!

Of course, the club owes a lot to Sedgefield Council’s Local Improvement Programme and the Football Foundation for providing grants to afford the facilities but the football club are also indebted to the support received from Newton Aycliffe Sports Club who continue to be a massive backer and supporter of the club’s transformation.

Seated accommodation was delivered in the spring of 2010 and after the assistance from local firm Finlay Structures and a team of volunteers dedicated to the club, standing accommodation for over 100 persons was installed in February 2011, ready for the club’s transition into a top-flight outfit.

In December 2016 Deano Browne & a returning Danny Mellanby joined as joint manager, steering the Club 9th in Division One, following that with a 14th place finish in 2017/2018.

For 2018/2019 Danny has elected to move to a new role on the club’s committee concentrating on youth development. Andrew Jinks & former skipper Sean Tarling have come in as Assistant Managers.

A poor start to the 2018/2019 season brought a change of management with former Team Northumbria manager Colin Stromsoy joining in early 2019. His input led to an improvement in form which resulted in a 12th place finish in the league.

This was developed further with the team sitting 5th in Division One when Covid-19 brought the season to a premature end. Further works to the ground took place over the summer of 2020.

New drains were laid to help reduce the number of postponements due to waterlogging. At the same time a grant from the Great Aycliffe & Middridge Partnership allowed for the resurfacing the path leading to the ground & the construction of a turnstile.

By Car

Hillheads Park, Whitley Bay, NE25 8HZ Hillheads Park has terracing on all four sides. The main stand, on the side closest to the entrance, has seating for 330 and further covered standing accommodation. The new stand on the opposite side has covered standing accommodation. The Seahorse clubhouse is open from midday on Saturday matchdays, and from 6pm on midweek matchdays. Toilets are situated inside the clubhouse. A burger van provides hot food and drinks while on the opposite side of the ground ‘Tommy’s Tea Hut’, named in memory of Bay stalwart Tommy Moody, is operated by the Supporters Club and sells hot drinks and snacks.

From Tyne Tunnel A19, take A1058 exit towards the coast. From Newcastle, follow A1058 Coast Road. Turn left at A192 roundabout by Tynemouth Swimming Pool then take A191 at Foxhunters roundabout, follow this road for half a mile then turn right immediately past pedestrian crossing outside Aldi supermarket. Take the first left into a public car park which is immediately behind the ground. Walk up a narrow lane towards Ice Rink and turn right into the ground.

Take Tyne & Wear Metro from Newcastle to the coast.

Alight at either Monkseaton or Whitley Bay and ground is ten minutes walk.

Services 308 and 309 from Newcastle Haymarket Bus station pass the ground. alight at the Ice Rink. Frequent service throughout the day and evening.
