One of the most eagerly anticipated events on the Estate’s calendar is Goodwood Revival. More than a motorsport event, Revival is a celebration of timeless elegance and history, connecting us with an era of enduring values – where clothing and cars were built to last a lifetime.
Rich in nostalgia, the immersive experience is meticulously planned to ensure a seamless blend of history, entertainment and luxury. We spoke with Kimmi Hughes-Ward, Goodwood Theatrics Manager, as she provided us with a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how the event comes to life each year.
The planning for Revival is a yearlong process, kicking off almost immediately after the previous event wraps, with meetings beginning in October. The team dives into creative sessions, generating ideas, reviewing anniversaries and considering every possible element that could contribute to the theme. “We start compiling a list of key anniversaries – anything and everything is considered, as long as the outcome is creative, fun and immersive,” Kimmi explains. The team works closely with His Grace, The Duke of Richmond and Gordon, to evaluate different concepts and offer unique possibilities for thematic exploration. But beyond the logistics, there’s always one guiding principle: the story comes first. “The story is always at the core, even before collaboration”, says Kimmi. “It’s through this lens that the event takes shape, weaving together elements like fashion, music and characters into a cohesive narrative for our guests to explore and enjoy alongside the historic motor racing.”
Goodwood Revival’s success lies in the ability to surprise and delight visitors through the immersive elements of the event. Kimmi explains that the event is not only about the cars; it’s about creating an atmosphere that feels authentic and complete in every way. “The roving actors play an integral role in bringing the event to life,” says Kimmi, “These actors aren’t just performing - they are essential elements of Revival. The infamous singing nuns, for example, have become iconic at Goodwood, adding a layer of whimsy and intrigue to the overall experience”.
Every detail, from the characters’ interactions to the costumes they wear, is meticulously thought out. The event isn’t just a spectacle – it’s a story unfolding, where every act, song and dance has a deeper connection to the theme. The Goodwood Actors Guild (GAG), a troupe of around 150 local and professional actors, is essential to this experience.
The casting process is no small feat. Kimmi compares it to putting together a puzzle: “It’s about finding the right person for the right role,” she says. Once cast, the actors collaborate with the creative team to ensure their performances align with the overarching story. For example, every character’s appearance, from head to toe, is scrutinised for authenticity. “Nothing is left to chance, even the tiniest details, such as the lace on a cuff or the precise fit of a uniform, are attended to with the utmost care.”
Goodwood’s commitment to authenticity extends far beyond the stage. Revival embraces a sustainable ethos through the Revive & Thrive initiative. All costumes are sourced from pre-loved collections, either rented, recycled, or purchased from resale websites. For 2025, no new clothing will be bought – only vintage or era-appropriate garments will be considered. “It’s about making sure everything fits the time period and is ethically sourced,” says Kimmi. The team also repurposes and reuses sets and materials wherever possible, ensuring that sustainability is at the heart of the event’s operations. Sustainability doesn’t stop with clothing and theatrics. From 2024, Goodwood Revival racing uses entirely sustainable fuels in the latest initiative of the Revive & Thrive ethos, securing the future of the historic event.
As the countdown to the 2025 Goodwood Revival continues, it’s clear that this is more than just a motorsport event. It’s a living celebration of a bygone era, one that continues to captivate visitors year after year with its attention to detail, commitment to sustainability and its ability to transport everyone back to a time rich in style, grace and tradition.

LIFE IS FOR CELEBRATING WITH RIDGEVIEW

Ridgeview, a family-run vineyard nestled in the foothills of the South Downs, boasts a rich heritage built on vision, passion and hard work. These core values resonate deeply with those at Goodwood and we are thrilled to have Ridgeview as an official partner of The Kennels. In an exclusive Q&A for Woof! siblings Tamara Roberts, CEO and Simon Roberts, Head Winemaker at Ridgeview, share their stories about the vineyard and its history.
Ridgeview is a family-run vineyard with a rich heritage. How did it begin?
Tamara: Ridgeview started as a bit of a dream – our parents, Mike and Chris Roberts, were true pioneers. In the mid-1990s, they saw the potential for England to produce world-class sparkling wine, at a time when the idea was still unconventional. With a mix of bravery and belief, they planted our first vines in 1995 on the South Downs. Their vision was clear: to create sparkling wine that could stand alongside the best in the world. Today, that dream is very much alive and we’re still driven by their pioneering spirit.
How has Ridgeview evolved from its early days to the internationally recognised brand it is today?
Simon: 2025 marked our 30th anniversary and it provided a great moment to reflect. On the outside, we have changed a great deal by growing in stature. However, at heart, we are still the same, driven and inspired by our passion. Quality has always been the most important thing, overriding everything else from day one. Every decision we make, whether it’s in the winery or the vineyards, in marketing or hospitality, is always about quality.
How does being a family-run business influence the way you approach winemaking and business decisions?
Tamara: There’s a deep-rooted sense of pride and responsibility. The longterm view shapes how we care for the land, invest in sustainability and constantly innovate. It also means that we stay true to our values – quality first and always. And, of course, working alongside family keeps you grounded. There’s a lot of laughter, a lot of debates over family lunches, but ultimately, we’re all pulling in the same direction. Family values are incredibly important to us and they flow through the whole business, all team members are valued as wider members of the family. We love to nurture employee’s careers whilst at Ridgeview and beyond.
If you could share one piece of advice from your family’s experience in the wine industry, what would it be?
Tamara: Stay true to your values and be patient. Wine is a long game –it demands time, care and a lot of trust in the process. There are no shortcuts.
Simon: We have a passion and a shared goal – to make the best wines possible. While we’re still a relatively young industry in the wine world, collaboration is probably the most important thing, the idea that together, we are stronger.
Ridgeview has become a leader in English sparkling wine. What do you think has been the key to its success?
Simon: Our pioneering attitude at Ridgeview has always set us apart from the crowd. We learnt incredibly early from Dad that it was best to throw ourselves into the industry and to use our experience to guide wherever possible. We are proud of our firsts and continue to innovate. It would be nice to think that people feel that we have helped to grow the English wine industry and have instilled a sense that quality is the most important thing and, in doing so, have changed the global perception of English sparkling wine.
Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in winemaking. What steps is Ridgeview taking to be more sustainable?
Tamara: Sustainability is at the core of everything we do. We’re constantly working to reduce our carbon footprint – whether it’s through solar-powered energy, lighter glass bottles, or biodiversity initiatives in our vineyards. We’re also proud to be certified as sustainable by WineGB, which holds us accountable to best practices and one of the first wineries in England to be certified B Corp.
What’s one thing most people don’t realise about making sparkling wine?
Tamara: How much patience it requires. From vine to bottle, it’s a multi-year process. The time spent ageing on lees is where the magic happens – it’s what gives sparkling wine its complexity and depth.
What’s your favourite Ridgeview wine, and why?
Tamara: It’s hard to pick, but our Blanc de Noirs holds a special place for me. It’s beautifully rich and complex, with layers of red fruit and brioche. It’s also a bit of a passion project for us and we love how it expresses the elegance of Pinot Noir.
Simon: The Oak Reserve is a wine that I really wanted to make in a style that is quite personal to me. I love how complex it was to create, using combinations of different ages of oak barrels from different vintages. It is the perfect wine to pair with my favourite meal of the year – Christmas lunch.
What excites you most about working with Goodwood?
Tamara: Goodwood is a natural fit for us. The commitment to heritage, sustainability and quality mirrors our own values and pioneering spirit. We love the fact that Goodwood has always dared to be different which is a wonderful trait that we admire and share.
Simon: Goodwood is a symbol for excellence whether for motorsport, golf, horseracing or incredible hospitality experiences. It makes us very proud to be associated with the history and reputation of such a great Estate. It felt like a natural synergy of sharing what we do and love and respect for our land, environment and region.
