George North

Wing sensation George North was the youngest ever Scarlet to play for Wales as they faced South Africa at the Millennium Stadium in 2010, and the 200th international Scarlet. At 18 years and 7 months, George is amongst a select few of young guns chosen to play for Wales at the highest level. Warren Gatland included young winger Tom Prydie in his squad for the 2010 Six Nations who became the youngest ever player to pull on the Welsh jersey at 18 years and 27 days. North, raised in Rhoscolyn, Anglesey, has had a whirlwind debut season for the Scarlets. He scored four tries in his first six competitive games, two of those tries were scored in his first ever competitive game away at Treviso back in September. The young Scarlet has developed through the Scarlets’ Academy system. He attended Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern and Llandovery College and also played at semi-professional level for Llandovery RFC. He began his rugby career as a youngster with Llangefni U14’s before moving on to Pwllheli and Rhyl. George stands at 6’ 4” and weighs in

at 16st 7lb and is the the youngest Scarlet international of all time. As well as the honor of winning his first ever international cap, George scored his first ever international try just 5 minutes into his debut game with a second try in the second half. The Scarlets 18-year-old wing said he was overwhelmed to receive his call-up to the Wales squad He said: “It’s was amazing - such an honor, and I was really surprised. My parents were over the moon for me. I thought it was someone playing a prank at first, I just couldn’t believe it when I got the text so I got my agent to phone-up and check it was for real!’ “I’m was obviously delighted, it’s been such a great season for me so far with the Scarlets, they’ve handed me the chance to play right from the beginning of the season and I’ve worked hard on my game and really concentrated on improving since joining the

senior squad in the pre-season, I just want to keep my head down and keep focus on improving my rugby.’ “It’s an excellent environment at Parc y Scarlets, particularly for developing players like myself and the opportunities and support I’ve been given in such a short space of time to prove myself has been brilliant. “It’s great for younger guys like me as there’s so much experience around to feed off from the other players across the field. To have top-class players like David Lyons, Vernon Cooper, Regan King, Stephen Jones and Morgan Stoddart helping you find an added edge to your game, really makes a huge difference. “The thing that’s struck me since I joined is how hard this team wants to work for each other, it’s a great place to be, there’s a really good vibe at the Scarlets and I just really enjoy coming into training.”

Scarlets Skills Coach and former 47-cap Wales wing Mark Jones received a special mention from George, “I feel really lucky to be able to work with a coach like Mark Jones, who’s fresh from the game and has really helped me look at how I play in different ways as well as helping me gain confidence and build belief. He kept telling me at the start that I wouldn’t have been picked if I wasn’t good enough - which coming from someone like him really helped!” “I’m just really grateful and delighted with the chance to be in the Wales camp and I’m really enjoying the experience.”

VXR8

REAR-DRIVE, 6.2-LITRE V8, SUB-£50K: IT HAS TO BE THE NEW

Vauxhall’s storming VXR8 model is back with a vengeance, packing heavily revised front- and rear-end styling, a new cabin and a raft of new technology to enhance its appeal to drivers in search of one of the last, great rear-drive V8 super-saloons. Priced at £49,500 (inc. 20 per cent VAT) and available to order later this month, the new VXR8 is now based on HSV’s E3 GTS model, just launched in Australia, the previous VXR8 representing the old version of the lower-spec ClubSport R8. That means it still undercuts full-size super saloons like the Audi RS6, Jaguar XFR and Mercedes E63 AMG by between £13k and £29k, and even performance saloons from the class below, such as the BMW M3 and Mercedes C63 AMG. A new, ‘Shockwave’ grille, LED daytime running lights and sleek new wing-vents mark the new car out from the front, while the rear features a new ‘Superflow’ rear spoiler, LED tail lamps and twin exhaust tips that mimic the shape of the front grille. As you can see from these first official press shots of our Hazard Yellow car, the new VXR8 will never blend into the scenery! As before, the new VXR8’s race-bred chassis uses MacPherson struts/progressive rate coil springs at the front and a multi-link independent set-up at the rear. But for the first time on a VXR8, Vauxhall has employed Magnetic Ride Control (MRC), a suspension system which adapts up to 1000 times a seconds to road conditions and driver inputs. Based on technology used in GM’s current Corvette ZR1 supercar, MRC works by sending an electric current through damper units filled with ‘soft’ magnetic particles. These particles harden as

the input reaches its maximum value, providing drivers with exceptional levels of ride, handling and stopping power. Of course, no VXR8 would be complete without a large-capacity V8, and this latest version doesn’t disappoint. The fourth generation 6.2-litre LS3 unit produces 431PS and a massive 550Nm of torque, enough to propel the VXR8 from 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds and on to a governed top speed of 155mph. As before, drive is delivered to the rear axle via either a sixspeed manual or auto transmission, working through a mechanical limited slip differential. Inside, the new VXR8 has undergone a transformation. Full leather trim is now standard, and front occupants are cocooned in special HSV Performance Seats with eight-way adjustability. A new instrument cluster and surround, centre stack and switchgear provide a cleaner and more integrated look, while standard equipment also includes Aux-in/USB inputs, iPod support and Bluetooth with phone book display and touch-screen dialling. But for drivers who want to engage with their VXR8 like never before, Vauxhall has introduced EDI, or Enhanced Driver Interface. EDI connects with the on-board computer to constantly stream real-time vehicle dynamics and performance to the car’s main 5-inch monitor. At the touch of the screen, drivers can access a variety of data such as vehicle G-forces, power and torque and lap times – even the degree to which their VXR8 is drifting. Completing the clever package is the ability for drivers to download data, such as track day performance, and analyse it using the MOTEC i2 software provided.

Matt has remained current and honed his skills, developing into an outstanding and inspirational Chef. Matt has already familiarised himself with many of Anglesey’s/North Wales local food producers and going forward is very excited about incorporating many of these into his new menu here at The Tavern 1924. Aiming to fully immerse himself in the Welsh gastronomic scene Matt will very soon be interviewing in the hope of joining the Welsh Culinary Team. Describing himself as a genuine Chef he is passionate about preparation from fresh and bringing the best out of local produce. Matt is a modern chef, highly technically trained he specialises in reinventing classic dishes with a modern twist as well as creating innovative new dishes. The menu at The Tavern 1924 now has a strong emphasis on local, seasonal and market fresh produce including freshly caught fish, Menai mussels, oysters and scallops as well as Welsh lamb and beef. Using suppliers such as Maurice Strawson, E.T Jones, Hootons, Dolmeinir, Four Seasons and Welsh Maid to name but a few we feel The Tavern 1924 truly reflects the best produce the Island and North Wales has to offer.

DJ Silv Silv is a professional DJ and entertainer based in North Wales with over twelve years’ experience, and an acclaimed reputation. With residencies in top UK nightclubs as well as work in commercial radio, Silv has a wealth of knowledge in the music industry. DJ Silv is a talented local DJ along the North Wales Coast and has a reputation for organising impressive parties and events. Silv started DJing in North Wales almost 20 years ago, working alongside some school friends to organise the “Llysfaen Halloween Disco” in the local village hall! This was enough to secure a regular spot DJing in his local youth club; ultimately attaining a residency as warm up DJ in Broadway Boulevard in Llandudno. Silv has put in a lot of hard work to get to where he is today: “working as a self-employed DJ is great fun, but is something you need to continually work hard at, if it’s going to be your main profession and source of income”

He has also promoted a band night, called “C90 Live.” The popular night ran for a few years, showcasing Welsh bands and music; bringing high profile Welsh musicians to the North Wales coast: “I love music and working with young people passionate about the industry, is a real obsession of mine! It’s not easy breaking through as a band these days, especially with the recession and so on. Many local pubs and clubs don’t have much live music anymore, certainly compared to a few years ago.” Many of you may well recognise Silv’s distinctive voice from the radio, presenting the traffic & travel reports weekdays across North Wales as well as presenting his own weekend breakfast show on Heart 96.3. Silv also enjoys getting involved in Llandudno’s local community radio, Tudno FM, encouraging new talent to shine through the medium of radio. Silv is currently the resident DJ at Broadway Boulevard on Friday and Saturday nights: “I love my job in the club; I can play the most up-to-date music and perform to one of the largest crowds in North Wales! I play a good mixture of dance, R&B and chart music, with the occasional classic thrown in. I also spend a lot if time discovering exciting

remixes and new versions of popular songs, just to add a bit of spice!” 2010 is a very exciting time to work in the music industry. Technology has changed a lot since Silv began his DJ adventure in the late 90’s: “I taught myself to DJ using turntables and playing records, and I remember mixing in clubs, whilst smoking - which seems very strange nowadays! I now use a laptop to play music from, with a programme called Serato Scratch Live. This exciting technology allows me use records or CDs to control my laptop; it sounds complicated but it’s easy really. And awesome fun! There are now also apps for the iPad, which can be used by professional DJs, so look out for me using one at my next gig!” Getting hold of new music is also very different, with all new music being bought online. “I can’t remember the last time I

went and paid money for a CD in a shop! I spend about three hours a week searching for music, and the top 40 can change so quickly these days that you always have to be on the look out for the next big song!” Silv also works alongside his friend and DJ companion Jonny Williams (aka DeeJay Jonny B) entertaining at private birthday parties, weddings and events - check out his website for bookings info. You’re welcome to join Silv on Facebook, MySpace or follow on Twitter by clicking the links on his website: www.dj.silv.co.uk

January Beauty It’s that time of year again; we over indulge, bloat ourselves by eating and drinking too much at Christmas and then spend January undoing it all. Some of us will be heading for the gym, others to the book shop for the latest self improvement book, but, there will be some of us who will be embarking on a new beauty regime. So this time I thought we could look at some popular New Year Resolutions and see how a Nail & Beauty therapist can help you to achieve them. 1. I will stop biting my nails. Its very hard to stop biting your nails, you didn’t wake up one morning and decide to start, so just deciding to stop can take more that will power alone. You need to address the cause of nail biting; the triggers that make you do it. Write a diary and every time you bite, write down what you were doing and how you were feeling. Were you stressed, sad, tired, thirsty or bored? Interestingly, most people who bite their nails do not drink

enough fluids. So upping your fluid intake can have a positive effect. You can buy products to paint on the nails that taste awful, but in my experience they don’t work as the biter soon gets used to the taste. You need to get enhancements on the nails so that you physically are not able to get to them. It is important to break the cycle of biting and we run nail biting clinics at our salons to help you stop. 2. I will tone and shape my body. If you are embarking on a new exercise regime then it would be worth also considering a monthly full body massage. Regular massage has been shown to improve skin tone and circulation, aid in movement and creates a sense of well being and also can aid sleep and relaxation. It also firms the skin and helps the muscles to work more efficiently. 3. I will try something new Spring is only a few months away and we will stepping out of our boots and jumpers soon. If you have never had a facial or been waxed, or had a

Resolutions pedicure, why not take advantage of the January offers many salons will have on at this time of year and try something new? You never know, you might love it enough to do it regularly and by the time spring comes you will look and feel great. 4. I want a new career Well, if you have ever considered learning something new, why not go on a beauty course? We run lots of different ones, from spray tanning, to nails to even massage. You gain a recognised qualification as well as a new skill. A new career as a beauty therapist is just around the corner. We hope that 2011 will bring you happiness, love and success and look forward to seeing you at 2 dumb blondes in Deganwy or Boudoir Nail & Beauty in Llandudno
