PUMP IT UP!

Be the talk of the town in these closet keepers By: Tiffani Chynel

Pump it up!

LBP – Little Black Pump

Oh how every woman loves black. What can I say?...you just can’t go wrong with it. Depending on how you wear it, you can be edgy, sexy, sophisticated or all of the above! Pair this perfect pump with a suit (tailored to perfection) or a dark pair of denim that compliments your curves.

Bold Bombshell Ever thought of buying a heel in your

favorite color? Well...why not? Add a liitle pop! to your simple outfit. Break out of your shell and demand attention when you walk down the street. Royal blue, fuschia, emeraldt green Be the alk orof even electric yellow don’t be shy when it comes to a bright huedani heel, wear it By: Tiff Chynel confidently and you will be the talk of the town.

One thing about “trends” is they are easily forgotten. Purchase shoes that not only make a statement but are versatile AND acquire longevity. Smart buys can be found at Steve Madden, Aldo, Baker, and Guess. Get more bang for your buck and stop throwing your money away with “but they were so cheap” shoes. You will spend more on cheap shoes (aka disposable fashion) than investing in a quality heel for a few dollars more. Closet keepers are heels that are smart investments that every woman should own. You can wear them throughout the year and with multiple outfits. They are a better quality and affordably priced.

The Foundation of a Men’s Suit By: Patty J

To achieve the look of ultimate power and confidence, “Suit up.” Barney from How I Met your Mother, reminds us all that styles and gotten a bit relaxed. With a suit you instantly become well respected and noticed. Is it the clean tailored lines? Perhaps it’s the fabrication of the trousers and jacket in a world where denim and cotton tees rule the scene. Whatever the reason might be let’s divulge the basics and latest in menswear suit fashion. The classic, business suit is built on the jacket and pant. These matching pieces should fit immaculately. The tailored suit has a structure where the shoulders are clearly defined. Strong shoulders provide an extra air of confidence. Lapels range in size and length. Without them the jacket would be too casual. Buttons are usually the next variation in this refined ensemble. Boxy double breasted suits were all the rage in the 80s. But now styles are inclined to have a two or three simple buttons going down the center. The trousers that accompany the suit are of the same fabrication with not many differences. A classic pant is fitted with at the waist and tapers out for more space in the thighs and legs. A mainstay choice in suit fabric is wool. A strong durable fabric that is weaved to produce a smooth hand. Summer suits could be made in a range of fabrics but the breathable quality of cotton is ideal. While traditions lead to black, blue and gray with details ranging from solid to pinstriped, in spring hues begin to lighten up a bit. Ties, vests, and collared button-up shirts are the fun furnishings that go along with suits. Silk ties are classic. Adding a vest creates the three piece suit, an option if you want to look extra spiffy. Great trends in shirts are patterns like plaids and checkers to wear with a solid jacket. When the genius minds of top fashion houses get together, were bound to see the traditional fabrications rejuvenated. Bold patterns, intricate detailing and slouchy pants have been seen on Spring the runways of Versace, Dior Homme, and Calvin Klein.

Take Calvin Klein, a name synonymous with clean cut fashion. This season the overall picture is not much different yet we get bouts of bold variations in between the usual mix. One of the most memorable pieces was a white suit patterned with a large format plaid print. Plaid usually a staple of casual wear has been deconstructed to suit a more formal garment.

Dior Homme’s notable contribution for spring is a play on the traditional suit. Where fitted is usually the norm they have created a slouchy, edgy look. The jacket is a bit oversized and thin lapels create a boxier look, one that allows this to lean on the casual side. It’s ideal for the gentleman trendsetter. Versace took a different route, in their collection the 50s are running rampant. They had ultra fitted suits with overstated cuffed hems, an ode to denim in that era. It’s brilliant for the playful details of a commonly stuffy silhouette.

You can easily find the classic renditions from your favorite designers. But to try these new looks are a fun way to mix up men’s suits in the rainy months of spring.

Red,Orange,Yellow,Green,Blue... Little Shilpa

Lakmé Fashion Week (LFW) , a twice annual affair, is a jointly organized by Lakmé , the No.1 cosmetics and beauty brand in India and IMG Fashion, global leader in the management and production of fashion weeks and designer fashion events. LFW has been conceived and created with a vision to “Redefine the future of fashion and Integrate India into the global fashion world”. Designer Shilpa Chavan of Little Shilpa has already had an award winning career, winning prestigious awards such as; accessory designer of the year for Marie Claire and Elle magazines, India. Having received training both in Mumbai and at London’s Central Saint Martin’s, Little Shilpa’s career has gone from strength to strength cementing her reputation internationally as one of the most talented designers of our time. And as of this fashion week, she was ready to claim her reputation of the queen of contrasting brights.

by Monica Bedi

Little Shilpa returned this season with yet another hauntingly beautiful collection walking the fine line between the fun and frivolous and the undoubtedly fragile. Needless to say, Little Shilpa presented the fashion world with ultra-bright accents and your eyes were sure to take cover. Inspired once more by Charles Baudelaire and his most famous volume of poems ‘Les Fleurs Du Mal’, the AW11/12 collection incorporated all the elements of design we have come to know and love from Little Shilpa. Always one to push the boundaries, Little Shilpa’s Lakme showcase was India’s first digital show using a pastiche of moving and still images accompanied by menacing music to set the tone. Models sauntered down the catwalk in measured movements as representations of the digital imagery that loomed on the screen.

‘Les Fleurs Du Mal’ caused outrage when first published in Paris in 1857 with six of the poems being forcibly removed due to moral grounds. Deception, decadence and debauchery were just three of the themes running throughout of which Little Shilpa capitalised on by ‘poeticizing their erotic melancholy from feeling to form‘. Channeling skittles, a bright and light with an eye-popping colour palette was apparent upon first glance of this collection. Rainbow coloured corsages sat side by side exaggerated Swarovski crowns embedded in light reflecting Perspex creating a visual explosion to the eye. Whilst multi-hued hearts and stars nestle snugly in every crevice from the floral headdresses right through to the vibrant epaulets that completed the collection. Its only on closer inspection when you notice the subtle touches such as the fading colours of the petals, indicating a slow loss of life that the inspiration of Les Fleurs Du Mal’ really becomes clear. Death, once again, preoccupied Little Shilpa yet through Charles Baudelaire and her creative genius she continued to find new ways to explore this darkness.

Shifting your bags from Winter to Spring by: Patty J The days are longer the temps are rising; its official spring is here. It’s a season where Mother Nature goes a bit easier on us. We no longer have to don our heavy winter gear and trips outside don’t just span from the car to the house any longer. Depending where you live, we all will have different transitioning issues. But whether your winter was frigid or mild you will still need a great spring bag. And if it’s still a bit chilly in your area the season’s feminine bags might not bode well with cool weather clothes. Bags are possibly one of the most enjoyable items to shop for; since they come in a multitude of choices. Some are big others are small, and then there is fabrication and color. Spring bags tend come in light shades with delicate and soft fabrics. When you’re in the mindset of winter, your bag contents lend to the size. Our winter bags were chock full so we might of need have to consolidate our stuff into spring’s smaller sizes. An easy way to make the switch is to gradually step down into a smaller bag. While it’s still plenty rainy outside it’s a good idea to get a bag that has the function of durability and the look of style and spring. This can be achieved by choosing colors like white, beige, springs greens, and any other muted tone. As we take on spring full spring and your actually wardrobe is fully transitioned then it’s a great time to buy the more delicate bags. Small shoulder bags and cross-body bags are great trends for this season. They each look great on springs dainty layers like a khaki jacket and long frock. Another great spring trend is tassels. Not gaudy Texas tassels but cute details that amp up the style factor. Alas, viewing the changing in our neighborhoods it’s a relief spring is here. A few buds are beginning to appear in our favorite trees and the sunlight is lasting longer. It’s time for your style factor to blossom as well into dresses, dainty shoes and fun wispy bags.

Stacie May: Vintage, Inspired Fashion for Today’s Woman by Donna Wilkins

In fashion, how does contemporary equal vintage? Wouldn’t contemporary be more synonymous with its sister, modern? If so, doesn’t that make vintage, contemporary’s opposing cousin? But, if contemporary and vintage were considered one and the same, they then would be twins. The definition for vintage is fashion that is more than 20 years old. Contemporary is now. Contemporary is current. Contemporary is not 20 plus years ago. This being said, fashion must have a past because there needs to be a history for it to progress. Fashion has its genesis from long ago. Contemporary is its current past. Many designs from this century have the look and feel from the previous century. Therefore, contemporary and vintage work well together. Such is the clothing line; Stacie May by San Diego designer, Stacie Taylor. I first discovered Stacie May, at Fashion Week San Diego in October of 2008. I immediately became a fan. I remember her being the stand out of the evening. That event was held downtown San Diego on the rooftop of the Manchester Grand Hyatt. The runway ran the length of the pool. Each piece was stunning. As the models glided down the catwalk, the fabric moved like tiny ripples of water. Not to be outdone, the hemlines changed from above the knee, to handkerchief, to diagonal, to long and flowing. They danced, simultaneously, along with the sleeves. As a child, Stacie loved art and took classes. Her mother taught her to sew and she began creating things, without using a pattern. Her first models were her Barbie dolls. After encouragement from her mother to pursue design as a career, she attended and graduated from the Savannah College of Arts and Design in Savannah, Georgia. Her press release states, “Stacie designs for the woman who wants to invest in articles of clothing that can be worn anywhere and don’t go out of style by season or trend.” She hand picks all of her fabrics and everything is made in the United States.

A designer for the past 12 years, she also works full time as a design consultant at a local San Diego business where she is in charge of special events and promotions. Not only is she an entrepreneur, but one who gives back. On her website she encourages folks to have a charity in mind and offers $10 off every purchase to be given to that charity. This is in conjunction with www.globalgiving.org. A cause she is proud to be associated is Jeans 4 Justice Conscious Co-op project. To find out more go to www.jeans4justice.org. To say she has a busy schedule is an understatement. I was happy she was able to take time for this interview.

The G.O.O.D.S Your name is Stacie Taylor, but where did the name for the line originate? Stacie Taylor It started as a nickname and just stuck. TGM You focus on vintage design. How did this come about? ST I grew up in a house that was more than 300 years old and my parents were vintage and antique collectors of all eras. My father mostly collected pin-up art and my mother mostly antique knick-knacks and furniture. As a child, I would always joke about the “junk” my parents kept around but since then have learned to appreciate what it is and how much it all has influenced my art. TGM How do you come up with your designs? What inspires you? ST As most artists can attest to, inspiration can come from a number of places and when you least expect it. It could be a movie, something in nature, a state of mind, music, a memory, even a television commercial! Inspiration can come from pretty much anything that you are exposed to even it it’s not conscious. I tend to be most inspired by how something makes me feel. How it may set a mood of some sort. I’m an Aquarius. We tend to follow our feeling more than anything else. For example: With the collection I’m working on now, the inspiration came to me from just hearing a song from a particular band from the 70’s one day while driving. This was one that I’ve heard many times before. This time it happened to provoke a mood and feeling that really got the ideas flowing.

TGM Speaking of which, what is the theme of your current collection? ST My current collection was aptly named by a fan as the Eternal Reverie Collection. I was inspired to create this particular collection by the current state of affairs. I started to really feel that things were so intense and so serious and I wanted to create things that reminded us to have fun and still live life despite hard times. I used a lot of bold colors and contrast along with very playful free flowing cuts to evoke feeling. TGM Where can one go to buy your clothes? ST There are Stacie Mays at the Industry Showroom on 6th and J, Skirt Essential Boutique in Oceanside on 216 North Coast Hwy., and at the newly opening Bad Madge boutique on Fern in South Park! You can also find Stacie Mays at www.staciemay.com click on Online Boutique, Smashing Darling, Esy and USTrendy.

TGM Who are some of the designers you admire? ST Honestly, I love and appreciate them all. As far as calling a few my “favorites”, I tend to love designers who use fashion to demonstrate true artistic expression and evoke a “feeling” as opposed to some that focus on functionality alone. Ana Sui, Betsey Johnson, Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier, Elie Saab, Rodarte, Chris Benz, Marc Jacobs, Vivenne Westwood. The list goes on… TGM I was so impressed with your showing at Fashion Week San Diego in 2008. When is your next show?

ST There are several events to take note of in the near future. First, April 16th from 5-9 there will be an exhibit opening at Mosaic in North Park for a project I’ve participated in called Art Meets Fashion. Also in coalition with this project are two more shows: April 28th at Terminal 2 baggage claim of the Airport and May 6th Liberty Station in Point Loma. For tickets and more information, please visit www.artmeetsfashion.org. Also coming up in June, I’m proud to announce that I’ll be doing a solo show in coalition with the Oceanside Museum of Art’s Art After Dark series. TGM All of these events sound interesting and very creative. Give us a little more detail on what to expect at the San Diego airport. ST The pieces that will be exhibited at the Airport’s Terminal 2 Baggage Claim are a result of a fantastic project that was co-founded by Focus Group, San Diego and the San Diego Visual Arts Network. The pieces were created as a collaboration of team members from 11 different teams that each included an artist, fashion designer, documenter and educator. Our team, Crossroads, picked “En Vino Veritas” meaning “In Wine There is Truth” as our theme. The pieces will be exhibited at the Airport from March 26th – September of this year. Included are the works of the documenter photographer, Melissa Au, the artist, Cathy Breslaw and the designer, me, Stacie May. The specific pieces in the case were inspired by the fermentation process of winemaking. For more information go to www.artmeetsfashion. org or to our team’s site at http://amf-crossroads.blogspot.com/. TGM So, as if you are not busy enough, what’s next for Stacie May? ST Next, for Stacie May is to push to get into larger department stores. I’ve become pretty comfortable at the boutique and online boutique level which means it’s time to challenge myself with bigger moves.

I know we’ll be purchasing Stacie May at Macy’s, Nordstrom’s, Bloomingdales and other department stores in the near future. What makes this line a success is the fusion of contemporary and vintage. In her words, “The Stacie May collection is fun, flattering, and graceful. It’s a vintage-inspired yet timeless line.”

The G.O.O.D.S. Guide to The Coachella Music and Arts Festival Joanna Lovett, Founder of The Gough House Project

Starting as early as Wednesday, April 13th, the hot and steamy desert town of Indio, California will be swimming with music and fashion lovers alike preparing for the 12th Annual Coachella Music and Arts Festival. Year after year Coachella has won over the most diverse collection of festival goers with it’s complex lineup and undeniably creative jungle of sights and sounds. The Coachella lineup consistently showcases a wide range of artists from the most popular and well known, like Jay Z in 2010, to the otherwise undiscovered creative genius of Fever Ray. Coachella is known as the kick off event for the slew of summer festivals to follow. It has the ability to catapult artists into the mainstream, for example, last summer’s performance by Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeroes. Coachella presents the ideal experience for those seeking to hear their favorite artists perform, and discover the best of who is on the rise. Here are some artists you may have never heard of, that you won’t want to miss.

Angus and Julia Stone The Kills Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears Glasser The Morning Benders Francis and the Lights Raphael Saadiq Yelle The National Plan B

Coachella’s attendees tend to set the mark for summer’s fashion trends. Some of the trendsetters from past years include: Kate Bosworth, Alexa Chung, and Rachel Bilson. For those of you who haven’t been to the Palm Springs area in mid April, temperatures can range from 88 Degrees all the way up 110 Degrees, making the creative process of choosing an outfit quite a feat. Outfits tend to be, not only cutting edge, but functional and temperature appropriate as not working up a sweat is close to impossible. At 2010’s Coachella Fest it was all about teeny tiny floral frocks, cat eyes, headbands and yes, even fur. This year I would expect to see more edgy looks - think rock n’ roll meets tribal with a kick. Check out some of my favorite options, and don’t forget your leather shorts, turbans, and tribal prints at this year’s Coachella Music and Arts Festival April 15th - 17th.

Brooklyn Boutique by Beard written by Hannah Yocum

Ouigi Q. Theodore, or more commonly known as “The Bearded Man of Brooklyn,” owner and founder of Brooklyn Circus boutique, reflects the same urban fashion as would your stereotypical indie art student. However, it’s not his outward fashion that has caught the eyes of many interviewers and newspapers (more recently, Format Magazine and the Times), but Mr. Theodore has cultivated a unique style that has won him applause not only among the fashion pundits of Brooklyn, but also from streetwise fans as far away as Europe and Japan. The New York Times profiled Theodore and discussed the definition of “urban” fashion: “His fashion quest, besides making a buck, is to elevate a side of black urban culture that goes beyond the baggy jeans and sneakers that still define hip-hop. ‘Our goal is to refine the image of urban America,’ Mr. Theodore said. ‘My dream is to see guys hanging on the corner in suits.’” Whatever the setting, his message remains the same: open your mind about what youth-oriented black street fashion can be. “Urban always had a style to it, a swagger,” Mr. Theodore said. But it came with baggage, too — “overuse of the ‘N’ word, the pants sagging,” he said. “It just created this stigma. When I travel

overseas, people see the way we dress and say: ‘You guys don’t listen to hip-hop. You’re not urban.’ Yes, we are.” “Growing up, Mr. Theodore himself had the kind of swagger that was noticed. When he was 8, his family moved from Haiti to Crown Heights, Brooklyn, where he quickly became known as a neighborhood fashion plate. He cited James Brown, Liberace and Fred Astaire as fashion influences, and would set off to Brooklyn Technical High School wearing a Ralph Lauren cashmere sweater around his shoulders one day, a ski suit and goggles the next.” In any case, Ouigi Theodore is taking street fashion by storm. Since opening Brooklyn Circus in New York, he’s opened a second shop in downtown San Francisco, which has earned him national, and international, fashion fame. But don’t be fooled; Though Theodore has given this trendsetting retro look “a modern, polyglot twist”, his hope is to unify: “Our goal is to refine the image of urban America,” Mr. Theodore said. “My dream is to see guys hanging on the corner in suits.” In the end, I hope he’ll do just that.

As the sun rises in the east it softly dries the paint of the recently bombed walls of a compound facing the tallest building in the United States. Black glass from the Sears Tower reflects on to the illustrative art work of Caesar Perez, 31, gently drying the surface of the freshly laid tapestry. Industrial workers prepared for a hard days work on the rail roads and hoped for some entertainment in the routine traffic of the trains. Union Pacific Railroad companies provide the canvas for muralist and graphic artists like Perez, who respectfully paints around the freight numbers to avoid confusion in the workplace. “If they see a train car go by it’s like a moving gallery,” said Sanchez.

Not constricted by the average width of the canvas or perimeter of a room, he is able to maintain the artistic aspect of freestyle art rather than deface a surface with incriminating gang expressions. His Black Gate murals can be seen in Wicker Park and standing out amongst the other scenes is his Brooklyn Bridge Mural. His work has also been displayed in LA at Bang Gallery and XRT as well as the Robot Gallery in San Fran. Signature swirls and clouds are on all his pieces twirling through the city like a tumbleweed using acrylics, paint, airbrush and aerosol spray paint intermix to create scenes of everyday life in the Windy City. Using wheat paste and an outline design of his own creation, a common city worker in a white hard hat stands on the side of a building in

the middle of lunch pasting his propaganda on the face of an old movie ad. Perez has worked with a variety of mediums throughout his artistic lifestyle and the manipulation and distortion created by Photoshop and Adobe and glued using wheat paste is just another endeavor he wishes to conquer. Of course there is a restriction placed upon street artist because stereotype behind graffiti art. However, this urban contemporary art is highly illustrative and more expressive of emotions and hardships or the love of life. All of Perez’s pieces are unique and embody his culture and environment. Sanchez has worked on interior designs at local restaurant like Carbon and BraeurHouse 2, but works in conjunction with other artist using digital illustration and carpentry. Iam, is a collective of different mediums of art and architecture rooted in Chicago. Individual artist blend their talents of art, design construction, photography and video into one cohesive work of art. From backdrops for theater and props on set, to art pieces and sculptures, to giant installations in a room, the group of artist are capable of presenting a piece of art in their own abstract form. “I still want to learn, I don’t want to stick to 2D media, I want to learn all the animated aspects of film,” said Perez. Convergence in media has translated into art and the upcoming style seems to be blending the several platforms of art and sound creating a larger body of work, an aesthetic Perez has kept in mind.

What’s The Buz by Lindsay Barajas How many websites do you visit per day? You probably don’t really know or even pay attention. Are you one to search for products online or are you one looking to advertise a product of your own? Look no further than what’s buzzin on Buzz-Beast.com. What is Buzz-Beast.com you ask? Buzz-Beast.com is a product placement website designed intentionally to find, archive and advertise the newest and coolest products from designer fashion to art and even travel. The creator and founder of Buzz-Beast.com, Sean Wesler, is also currently the Director of Global Sales for Deuce Brand, a San Diego based sports watch company created by CEO Gary Hughes. Ironically Sean and Gary are both Kentucky natives who graduated from the same high school. Gary found Sean via a mutual friend who told Gary about Sean and his product placement website. Requesting to put his watches on Buzz-Beast.com, it was only the matter of one phone call when Sean realized how small the world had just become. From that point forward, a friendship and long term business partnership began without him even realizing it. Today Sean is out to conquer the world of digital media, moving one product at a time onto Buzz-Beast.com and maybe onto a computer screen near you.

zz?!

Photography by Emily Soto

Now that Deuce Brand watches made it onto Buzz-Beast.com which launched Sean to eventually move to San Diego, taking his current position as Director of Global Sales of Deuce Brand. Deuce Brand watches are designed to look like the sports bracelet bands except this band has a timepiece attached, making it a fashionable sports watch. Not only is it fashionable for everyday wear, it is waterproof up to 150 feet deep, can be worn playing any sport and comes in 32 colors. So no matter your reason for rockin the Deuce, there is a color for every one. Deuce Brand watches are just one of thousands of the newest and coolest products that have been places on Buzz-Beast.com for the world to see. Creating Buzz-Beast.com and all that it provides to people around the world could have been possible for anyone to create. It just so happen to be Sean. For a kid fresh out of college experiencing the harsh realities of this thing called the real world, Sean’s outlook was more so focused on the endless possibilities he had with, “$7.00 and a bucket full of passion”. The success of Sean’s website was no overnight slumber party. He had to get used to the idea that he couldn’t just wake up and be on top of the world. Not only did he learn to accept failure before he was rewarded with his success today. He also was hit hard when he lost his job and was forced onto unemployment. Looking back, Sean explains, “It really was the best thing that ever could have happened to me. I needed to know what it felt like to be hungry again”. What he really didn’t like was the fact he had no control over his own destiny. And hungry he was. Sean perfected losing track of time by not looking at the clock when working. He managed to “fit 28 hours in 24”. He also saved time by only eating cereal for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Nobody can say it is impossible; it was done.

Maybe with the success and hard work done so far, he has been able to relax and eat a full meal. Not exactly; you see Sean stays hungry and I’m not talking about mom’s homemade gumbo. Sean is still fitting those “28 hours in 24”, and travels a good three months out of the year. His trick is to make his weekends enjoyable even if his Saturday is on a Tuesday. Eating is usually on the go and he makes sure he stays healthy by exercising first thing in the morning before his day starts. Time management is essential in Sean’s world because without it, chaos can strike at any time. Hard work will never stop and failure is always an option with anything. Sean will be the first to tell you in order to succeed once, you will fail ten times. He shares some wisdom from his past experiences when stating, “You will never lean nearly as much from succeeding as you will from failing”. For any of you that have dreams of being successful or creating a website that will help others, don’t give up. Know that you will fail more than you will succeed at first but each time you fall, just learn what not to do and get up again. If you have a product you want to seriously advertise, check out Buzz-Beast.com to see how you can get in contact with Sean. Maybe your product will be the next newest and coolest item chosen to be placed up for the world to see. Until next time, keep up with the buzz and spread the word.

RED RIDING HOOD REVIEW BY: DAVID PINSON

The new, updated version of Red Riding Hood manages to be an almost exact replica of the Twilight films without featuring one single vampire. The initial installment of the Twilight series was directed by Catherine Hardwicke, as is Hood. Actor Billy Burke plays the father to both Bella (Twilight’s mopey heroine) and Valerie (Hood’s mopey heroine) and the girls each have to deal with menacing werewolves. Bella and Valerie are involved in love triangles that feature a brooding, dark haired hunk and a brooding fair haired hunk and the audience will, no doubt, argue the qualities of both of Hood’s young gentlemen with the majority choosing Team Peter. And, finally, each film presents many a dazed gaze worn by its young cast as they spout slowpaced, awkward dialogue that is supposed to equate to romantic communication. This modern retelling feels too familiar to be considered fresh or new. In a small town deeply embedded in a lush forest (Twilight takes place in similar surroundings) the townsfolk live in constant fear of a werewolf. It had been nearly twenty years since the beast has taken a human life. It is a long stretch that comes to an end with the discovery of a young girl’s corpse. The townsfolk is whipped into hysterics, vengeance will be had. The dead girl is the sister to Valerie (Amanda Seyfried) and, after a brief encounter with the monstrosity, it seems that our little red hood wearing lass is next on the werewolf list. The crooked and cruel Father Solomon (Gary Oldman) comes to the village’s rescue and proves to be more of a threat than the monster roaming the land. Solomon explains that this is the season of the Red Moon and that one bite from the creature will turn the victim into a werewolf as well. Although it doesn’t seem like the best time for a jaunt to Grandmother’s (Julie Christie) house, Red makes the trek with basket in tow, only to comment on the enormous size of Grandma’s various body parts. The film has a smugness about it that is hard to ignore or enjoy. This attitude is personified by the look on the young casts faces throughout. Scenes come and go without much consequence and too much time is spent with Valerie wandering about glaring suspiciously at everyone around. Seyfried looks the part, her pale skin plays nice next to her red cloak and what big eyes she has, but she does little in the “speaking and emoting” area. Gary Oldman is in standard mode with intense bursts of screamed dialogue and a strange dialect that has hints of his Dracula accent. He gives the movie a slight bump when he arrives but that, like everything else up on screen, fizzles out before too long. Interesting note: The film is produced by Leonardo DiCaprio who came up with the idea that probably looked good on paper. Unfortunately, Hood is a lazy clone, mixing and matching borrowed elements with no real style or statement to call its own.

The latest incarnation of Jane Eyre is a blend of contemporary and classical storytelling making for a sort of hybrid entertainment. The film sounds ages old, pulling the words directly from the influential 1847 novel of the same name. Simultaneously the film looks and feels modern with breathtaking cinematography and vital performances. The mixture makes for an intriguing affair that should appeal to audiences unfamiliar with the material as well as those well versed. Jane Eyre’s (Mia Wasikowska) story is a “tale of woe” though she adamantly denies it. Orphaned at a very young age, she is sent to live with her aunt, Mrs. Reed (Sally Hawkins), who detests her strong spirit. Finding the young Jane (played with verve by Amelia Clarkson) impossible to handle, Aunt Reed trucks the girl off to Lowood School for girls when she is beat and mistreated but never broken.

Years pass and Miss Eyre leaves the horrid school to take employment as a governess at Thornfield Hall. It is here that she meets Mister Edward Rochester (Michael Fassbender), master of the Hall, who is almost instantly intrigued by the young governess. Unlike what was expected of women of the time, she is assured and empathetic without being disobedient and Rochester finds her engaging. Their love blossoms but something lurks in the corridors of Thornfield Hall that may get in the way of their happy ending.

JANE EYRE

REVIEW BY: DAVID PINSON

Director Cary Fukunaga (Sin Nombre) does a masterful job in staging the familiar story in a way that feels current. He fractures the story, telling parts out of order through the first two acts, adding more mystery to a film that is already dripping with secrets. The gothic aspects are fully exploited to the point that segments play like outright horror. This film contains a few shocks and squirms that rival anything passing for a scary movie in the last few years. There also small, personal moments that we spend with Jane during her struggles. We follow behind her, camera handheld, in shots pulled right out of Sophia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette. This goes along way in allowing us to relate to Jane and succeeds in creating a real living person behind the ancient clothes and customs.

Wasikowska also plays a huge role in giving her Eyre life. Her performance is subtle and skilled. Looking much like a young Gwyneth Paltrow, she says little with words and much with her eyes as she processes the world around her. When she is allowed to let loose, it is wrenching. With solid work in last year’s The Kids Are Alright followed by the title role in Disney’s/Burton’s billion-dollar grossing Alice in Wonderland, Wasikowska is a new force in Hollywood. Jane Eyre merely continues to illustrate her versatility. Fassbender plays Rochester pretty straight and brings the role a dignity and vitality that is evocative of an old Hollywood performance that suits the material well. There are “made for PBS/BBC” moments that pop up every now and again but the film is mostly brisk and exciting.

“Full Dark, No Stars” review by Sarah McCarthy

Full Dark, No Stars is a perfectly fitting title for Stephen King’s latest collection of short stories. After the first few pages, it’s easy to predict that the book is going to be “fully” dark. There are no stars between the covers of King’s newest addition. The first story, “1922”, is immediately reminiscent to any Edgar Allen Poe short story, and addresses similar themes. The premise of the plot is based on the corrosion of the human mind, as Wilf James slips into insanity after murdering his inconvenient wife to secure her family’s land. His son and accomplice runs away at 15 after impregnating their young neighbor, leaving Wilf alone to mentally deteriorate. There is even a reference to the worsening state of the house, and the caved-in roof near the end of the story is a debatable nod to Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher”.

“1922” is a bit like a folk-tale, but the following “Big Driver” sobers the reader with its sinister, yet contemporary theme. Tess, a successful writer, is raped after her car breaks down while driving home from a reading. King is able to allow the reader to ride the psychological rollercoaster of her trauma, and though it is short it makes an effective and ringing statement about the horrors of real society. “Fair Extension” is a mildly cliché tale of a cancer patient’s deal with the devil, but King uses his 34 pages wisely to sculpt a well-rounded story. Though not as riveting as the other three, “Fair Extension” should not be skipped. The collection ends with “A Good Marriage”, a quick reminder that King does indeed, still, kick ass. Here, he reconnects with one of his favorite themes, the “double-self”. The reader is left with a sense of austere realization; it wasn’t until reflection upon the collection that I linked their themes. In the past, King has made cars menacing, zombie cats terrifying, old hotels haunting; and now he is making the shadows of reality just as chilling. Full Dark, No Stars is certainly a “hit” for King, and though it is not exactly cheerful, sunny-day-at-the-beach reading material, it’s definitely worth picking up.

TERRY ‘TK’ KENNEDY HERE TO MOTIVATE THROUGH HIS FLY SOCIETY

by Shari Speller

Terry Kennedy the skateboard pro and CEO of his brand Fly Society has a message to motivate. “ I want to motivate” says the passionate young man about his goals and dreams that started from a very humble beginning. If Terry were to be approached 10 years ago and told that he would be the head of his household, move his family from the gang ridden streets of long beach to the peaceful suburbs of Winnetka, California all while building his brand and himself through Fly Society, he would believe you were speaking to the wrong Terry Kennedy. “Never would have thought I would have a career” says Terry as he begins to expound upon how he came into his own as a skateboarder. In a recent phone interview Terry explains that he started skateboarding because it “occupied my time, kept me out of my neighborhood, kept me away from trouble.” He “just did it to stay out of trouble and have fun as a young kid.” Now twenty-six Terry is far from that young kid he is fully committed to the progressive movement of his brand Fly Society which incorporates his rap group and his clothing apparel. Before there was Fly Society it was just Terry, his family and most of all his maternal grandmother who laid the

solid foundation of belief in God, having faith in God and not man. His grandmother sacrificed many things throughout his youth in order for Terry to continue doing something that kept him living to see another day even though she did not see a future in it she saw one in her grandson. This was no easy task the sport of skateboarding is expensive to the average low income household. The average cost for a skateboard is $150.00 a week and the cost of of the shoes range from $60.00- $70.00 every two weeks. Terry explains that “my grandma bought me a skateboard and then I would turn around a ask for another one. We couldn’t afford that. I would buy my friends shoes for 20 or 30 bucks or buy stuff half price from pro skaters that would sell stuff at Cherry Park, a park we

would skate at in downtown Long Beach.” Finding a way to manage help to lead Terry to the place where he can now give back. A few years after having to buy used gear from friends and pro-skaters, Terry begin to get sponsors through Baker Boards, Supra Kr3w, Boost Mobile, Venture, Brigada Eyewear and currently his own Fly Society. Fly Society consists of two vital parts of Terry his branding and his rapping. When Terry talks about his rapping, how it started, the message with in it and its purpose, one can’t help but sit listening in awe at the love, sincerity and passion in his voice. Fly Society the rap group “came about with me having to talk about my story and my struggle.” Terry self proclaims that rapping “its therapy for me, I lost my mother young, I lost my father young, I lost a lot of things. [A lot of things] thats happen to me in life where I felt like

its dope for me to vent and allow kids to know despite what you go through in life you still can succeed though out your dreams.” Terry Kennedy lives his message, it is a message that comes from his own life experience. He believes that this is “just another way for me to channel and talk to many kids who grew up the way I grew up, not having a thing, not having something, not fortunate to have parents, not fortunate to have clean clothes on your back . So its like, [Terry pauses in mid sentence as he searches for words to effectively convey the devotion he has], its just a product of my environment in a sense. I just want to show them throughout everything I’ve been through I was still able to fight diversity [and] still be able to believe and accomplish every goal and dream I had.” With a story as profound as his, anyone who sits to listen or read about him will be motivated to work hard to reach their personal goals. With a heart melting, inviting pearly white smile, that is sure to comfort any uneasy soul, and bright determined and focused eyes Terry humbly expresses that “me, I just want to motivate, really.” His show Being Terry Kennedy that debuted in 2010 on BET set out to show that very message. “When I sat down with BET they where like, ‘what is your overall message?’ I just want to motivate. I want to show everybody in this world that there is no excuse.” He uses his background as an example “I come from the lowest of the totem poll, no family, no mother, no father, no nothing living on county, nothing. I didn’t let that despite my character, thats my overall message.” Some how with a story as agonizing as his Terry is not moved by money. “ The thing about me that is so dope is, it ain’t about the money. It’s about me getting my message across, cause I know I’m gone to motivate. I know them kids are the ones thats gone step up

and do the things for me that needs to take place in the sense of keeping us relevant and keeping us moving forward. “ Terry speaks vehemently in regards to his decision along with the other members of Fly Society; H.I.T and Felix, to remain independent as artists after taking meetings with Def Jam Recording Label. His dedication to his fans is shown in his work, Terry says “its about treating that kid with the up most respect and giving him the most value; and letting him know, because at the end of the day they are the ones that keeps us relevant, nobody else outside of God, outside of that then your not relevant.” Not only does he display this amount of respect for his fans of his rap but also for his brand Fly Society. Fly Society the brand stems from him wanting to “create an apparel brand for kids that grew up in my neighborhood and in my situation.” Fly Society consists of Quy the main source that did the printing of the Fly Society tee’s and Nino the brand manager that came on board, after being requested by Terry to take his vision of Fly Society to the next level. Rare and yet extremely remarkable qualities that Terry posses are both patience and faith. Having those two qualities makes for him to be an unstoppable force. For Kennedy its all about keeping those that have been with you from the beginning with you to till end. When he began to expand the branding of Fly Society, Terry made it clear to his new brand manager Nino that it was imperative that Quy have a place in doing what he loves with in the brand. Terry confidently informs that the “right deal came along, we entertained it and he’s in a great position.” The dedication and loyalty that he requires from his fans and team is the exact same dedication and loyalty that he gives in return. Fly Society merchandise can be found and purchased online at www.flysocietyonline.com and in urban stores, skate shops and certain boutiques. Terry feels as though Fly Society is a brand that “can intertwine in so many different worlds. It can go back to skateboarding, it can go back to urban [and] hip hop everything I was raised off of, it can intertwine in all those things while at the same time giving you something you can afford and thats cool.” Mr. Terry Kennedy can easily come across as one of the busiest young up and coming moguls of his generation. This title is quite fitting for him seeing as though his visions doesn’t stop at Fly Society. Terry has plans in the works to bring skate parks to various urban neighborhoods through out the country.

Terry has a conviction that skating is a “self motivating sport.” Through his foundation Terry Kennedy Pro Skater and a non profit organization he will be able to see that same motivation empower many youth in a positive and safe environment. This truly remarkable man is such a motivating source and comes with such a captivating story. With all the success he has encounter and yet to encounter he remains grounded and dedicated to his message of motivating. He also acknowledges his grandmother as being the orchestrator of instilling his faith and relationship with God. Terry accredits her to teaching “me having patience, me asking God for everything, not leaving trust to nobody. Always telling me to do the work.” In the true fashion of a matriarch Terry says that she will ask “ did you work for it?” Terry continues to share the esteemed wisdom that she imparts on him. She tells him “before you do anything you sit down and talk to God about it, sit on it for a day, you pray, you read your bible and you come after it. If you feel the same way you did the day before then you can take it on.” Because of her precious words of wisdom Terry says “ I believe, I really believe, like I said where we come from I would never had guest in a million years we would be in the position that were in but thats the reason of having faith, believe in God and accepting stuff for what it is good or bad.” The future is brighter than the past for Terry Kennedy. His focus, passion and dedication to motivating is one that is desperately needed for this generation. He is a man that is walking through doors that are opened especially for him to worlds of opportunity that will uplift and inspire so many of todays youth. Terry’s ongoing message is “I just want to motivate the next kid that had to grow up the way I had to grow up and show them that you can beat the odds.” Truly he has beaten the odds. Terry Kennedy is more than a pro skater that made it out of the hood, he is a role model to all the fatherless, motherless, scared and confused children, teenagers, young adults and fully grown individuals who have lost sight of what life can be due to circumstances that they have encountered. The hit BET show Being Terry Kennedy has an 80% chance of gracing the airways with more of TK’s motivation. Terry “TK’ Kennedy is a fascinating man who is building a legacy that will empower for generations.

The Next Step No one got to where they are without a little worrying. Or, a lot. It’s easy to be overcome with fear when faced with the unknown. For the past three years my life has centered around exams, essays and assignments. Now that my university career draws to a close, I’m frantically wishing I could turn back the hands of time.

By Kimberly Lamontagne

Some embrace the opportunity that a fresh start brings with it. Others long to cling onto the comfort of the familiar. I fall into this second category. I have been known to fret over the littlest things, however, out of my control they may prove to be. I’m a perfectionist and thus will not rest until all goes according to plan-- which is usually the case. This should be reason enough to shed that incessant insecurity, but what if it’s a larger issue? I read an article in Newsweek a little while ago that had me questioning the inner-workings of my overactive mind as I began to identify with the article entitled “High on Anxiety”. The article suggests that anxiety increases cognitive performance, which may provide comfort for some, namely myself, seeing as it is the only way I know how to be. I suppose these feelings of anxiety have always kept me on my toes. It has led me to believe that I would not be the go-getter I am if I were to have had a laissez faire attitude. As the school year winds down, and with my bachelor’s degree in my periphery, I can conclude that maybe it isn’t such a bad thing after all. Had I not been this way I wouldn’t have started applying to jobs months before my diploma dare even be printed (as should you). I would not be the persistent individual I am today. Nothing is going to fall into your lap; you must seize the day. Work hard to build a résumé and rolodex through internships and volunteering. My advice to jobseekers, of any age, is to tend to those contacts like an avid gardener. Never let them forget who you are. Send along memos with updates on your work or holiday cards. It may take time to get where you want to be, but, it will come. For every door that closes, there’s a window of opportunity somewhere waiting to be opened. As I begin my leap into the unknown only time will tell where I’ll land.

Dress to Impress for a Job Interview by Mariah Honey

When going for a job interview, one of the most important things to do is dress to success. This does not mean that we cannot be our usual fabulous selves. It just means that we have to look put together so as to make a favorable impression in a different way. If you are unsure about how to exactly pull off this kind of look here are some tips for the best way of doing so!

Dress Fashionably, yet Conservatively

Although the inner diva inside us all would like to always be overly glamorous, a job interview is not the time to make the most extravagant fashion statements. We cannot wear the latest LaQuan Smith designs into an employment meeting without looks of you possibly breaking out into a Lady Gaga performance of her song “Born This Way”. Instead we have to opt for the more conservative looks. You want to dress in a way that shows that you fit in, are professional, and know how to appear within the business world. Dark colors, such as navy and black, are always classic and give a streamlined look- think Jackie O. Make sure it fits perfectly and has that tailored look.

Choose Attire that is in Good Condition

First and foremost, make sure that the clothes do not have a worn look. The last thing you want to do is look shabby. The best recommendation is to choose an “interview outfit” and keep it for just that. You must look neat and good for the interview, and having a new fit is a part of that. In this particular case, you will be judged by not only what you do or say, but also how you look and appear. Think of it as totally messing up your chances if you old clothes or some beaten down high heels.

Do not over accessorize your Look

Adding the right accessories to the outfit is key. Of course a watch is acceptable and classic. When it comes to earrings, you want to choose conservative ones that compliment the business look. The right accessories can keep a dark suit from just looking bland if done right. You do not want to overdo it and make the jewelry and distraction to the interviewers.

Your Hair and Makeup is an integral part of the Attire Looking your best for the interview also includes making sure you hair and makeup is on point! Both needs to have a professional look and style to it. No outrageous hairdos- hence Raptress Nicki Minaj. Your hair needs to be cut in a professional style and maintained- no roots showing! You need to make sure the glamorous night out makeup style is toned done and more subdued. You can choose a look that is more natural using browns and skin tone colors. This can be equally appealing and just as captivating if done right!

Make sure the outfit makes you feel Confident

Make sure you choose the outfit that makes you feel the best. Comfort is key to confidence. You do not want to select something that does not fit right or too many movable parts that you will have to constantly tug at. This will become a distraction to you and what you are really there for. Instead of focusing on landing this job you will be more worried about eliminating any possible wardrobe malfunctions. So when selecting a fit for a job interview, go with the conservative and professional look that makes you feel the most prepared. The confidence will shine thru when you are dressed right. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time when getting ready to make sure you pull off the best look possible to land your gig!

Shape Up Your Finances to Step Up Your Look By: Jamie O’Neill Hot-off-the-runway fashions for spring are in full swing and you are probably wondering how to manage your money to splurge on at least one of those hot ticket items. Each of us are learning to work with our new budgets after the holidays. This does not mean there is no way you can afford those new Jimmy Choos or that beautiful Balenciaga handbag you have had your eye on. There are many tricks to get your finances in shape to step up your spring wardrobe. First, you need to consider what you are doing with your expendable income. Are you dining out more than once a week? Perhaps you are going out one too many nights with your friends. Here are a few simple ways you can make a few changes in your finances so you can splurge on that hot new item! Limit your dining out to once a week. Have a cheat day maybe on Saturday or Sunday. On average, a meal at your local favorite eatery can cost you around $30-$50. Imagine if you saved all the money your spending on food and drinks with the girls and bought groceries for the week instead. Just doing that alone will put an extra $100 or more in the bank. Are you hitting the local coffee shop each morning on your way to the office? Try brewing your favorite coffee at home and filling your cute recyclable travel mug instead! You can buy an entire bag of coffee for the cost of one large White Chocolate Mocha! Not everything in shaping up finances has to be about cutting back. Have you looked inside your closet? To make some extra cash try selling the items you no longer use. List your gently used items on Ebay or even try selling them on Craigslist. Recycling your closet can really boost your spending ability. Out with the old and in with the new! Lastly if you are one of those women who just can’t be caught in the same dress twice, consider renting your dresses, handbags and jewelry from a site like Rent the Runway.com or Avelle.com. These fabulous websites give you access to your dream wardrobe for any special occasion at 90% off retail prices! Simply rent & return. Think of it as sort of a Netflix for fashion! Now not everything high fashion is out of reach! With choices like these, the dream of splurging while saving is now a reality!

THE ART OF TEQUILA

BY LAUREN MERCADO

Cool, modern, smooth. In this we encapsulate co-founder and president of Arta Tequila, David Fox, as well as his product. Fresh off of one company, Fox was looking for his “next project”. As a college student tequila was his spirit of choice so what better then to create something you love into a business? Fox’s wife, who is from Mexico, introduced him to great tequila’s about twelve years ago. Learning more about tequila intrigued David Fox which made him passionate about the spirit so with this and his families Mexican culture, naturally, a tequila brand was the right fit! Arta- The art of tequila, is so much more than a ultrapremium, estate grown, 100% blue agave tequila produced in the town of Arenal, Mexico (the birthplace of Tequila) that is distilled and bottled by 11th generation ranchers and a 3rd generation distiller. This eco-friendly liquor keeps earth in mind. Arta is 100% organic while also using recycled materials for the bottles and corks! One of our favorite details about the brand is the modern, yet culture inspired design of the three varieties of the Arta Tequila collection. Not only is this a green tequila, the company also has what they call a 1% promise, meaning that they will donate 1% of their profit to charity! In trying Arta Tequila you can help the planet, donate to charity and enjoy a great sipping simultaneously. David reinvented himself from a college kid to a “high-techie” to to tequila company owner and like him, Arta Tequila has done some reinventing its own, changing what good tequila is. Arta has taken the 100 hundred years of past tequila-distilling and somehow made it modern whilst keeping the culture of the spirit. After tasting Arta you realize that, “Ah! Not all tequila is the same!”, “I don’t have to quickly shoot it back and grab a lime!” and you say “Not only do I like it... but wow, it’s amazing!”

Arta Reposado: “The Art of Fiesta”

“Arta Reposado has a warmer nose than silver with hints of oak. The traditional smokey reposado flavor is complimented with herbal and floral notes and a finish of honey and vanilla”

Blanco: The

art of Surf “Brilliantly clear, Arta Silver is the purest expression of agave, with a pleasant nose with hints of citrus peel and honey. Herbal notes round out the taste finishing with a slightly sweet component.”

More young adults are pondering the idea of becoming an entrepreneur, however, many are stuck before they even get started. Where do you begin? How, like Fox, do you create an incredible product that is distinctly different? Fox’s first step was the most important: researching! With the help of a college buddy (who of course, threw tequila parties with David in college) the duo spent a year learning everything they could about the business, including studying other brands, as well as making a detailed business plan. Initially, anyone who is planning on venturing out on their own and becoming an entrepreneur, will have people that will doubt you. What do you do when people doubt you and what do you tell them? David Fox tells us this: “I’ve been doubted every step of the way in every business I’ve started. The naysayers motivate me. There’s not much you can tell them. I seek out people who understand the entrepreneur’s perspective, who get it, who know how hard it can be, and ultimately believe in the idea and want to see it succeed as badly as I do.” Toast to that! Thinker vs. “Doer”; You must take action in your life! Fox’s advice to the young entrepreneur: “Do it!! I never would have forgiven myself if I never tried to go out on my own. Being an entrepreneur is not easy, but if you follow your passion, refuse to give up, be relentless, and don’t let anyone get in the way of your dreams, creating your own successful business is absolutely possible. Cliche yes, but it’s really true.”

Arta Anejo: “The art of agave” “A smoky, agave

nose. The taste is very soft and sophisticated with sweet notes layered with hints if vanilla and carmel. The finish is dark, pleasant and satisfying befitting the tequila of true connoisseurs.
