Happy New Year! I hope that each of you had a wonderful holiday season.

2018 was a busy and productive year at Good Shepherd Health Care System (GSHCS). In this column, I will share some of this year’s highlights and discuss our major objectives for the new year.

In March, we completed the new Women’s Center in the Good Shepherd Medical Plaza North Wing Addition. This beautiful addition provides space for up to eight providers and should meet Hermiston’s need for women’s services for many years to come.

Most of you watched as the new intersection at 11th and Elm was completed.

This eight-month project was a partnership between GSHCS, the City of Hermiston and the State of Oregon – each contributing approximately one-third of the $1.5 million project cost. The new intersection improves traffic flow, safety, adds crosswalks and makes it easier to get in and out of GSHCS’ campus.

This year, we completed a new Urology Center in the Good Shepherd Medical Group and built out a new Information Technology Center in the lower level, including new offices and a conference room.

We combined Home Health & Hospice in a newly-remodeled suite in the Broun Building on Orchard Avenue. We also remodeled our 11th Street Home Medical Equipment building, including new offices and showroom.

This year, we began several new, innovative care programs. Our Home Medical Equipment Department added a Rural Respiratory program for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) patients. This program addresses a significant need within the community – helping people with COPD achieve greater independence at home. Our Home Health Department launched its Personal Home Care program, which provides personal care, medication assistance, housekeeping, medical appointment help, and other home care services – again, meeting another identified need within our community.

This year, we welcomed eight new providers, which are featured in an article within this newsletter. We have three additional providers contracted, who will be arriving later this year. We also added visiting physicians in Emergency Medicine, Radiology and Pathology. We also wished Dr. Doug Flaiz, Dr. Thomas Farney & Dr. Joseph Gifford the very best, as they retired this year.

In October, GSHCS held its first Annual Community Meeting at the Hermiston Community Center. Since its founding, GSHCS was organized around a community corporate membership structure and we held annual corporate membership meetings. This year, GSHCS moved to an Annual Community Meeting – hoping to encourage more community participation; letting more people know of the work we are doing and the advances we are making. Our community meeting featured Mr. Joseph Piscatella – who told his personal story on improving his health and lifestyle. We also had various booths reflecting new programs and educational offerings. Approximately 150 attended, which we consider an outstanding success. Thank you to all who attended!

Our most all-encompassing 2018 project was our migration to a new electronic health record (EHR) – Epic – which went live November 3. This major upgrade entailed two years of planning and preparation. It began with a physicianled steering committee, chaired by Dr. Leila Keeler (OB/GYN) and included a significant vetting process of various software and partner options. An affiliation with Legacy Health System was selected, using their LEAF (Legacy Epic for Affiliated Facilities) program. This upgrade included hardware changes and extensive medical staff and employee training. The new system has many features – an enhanced flow of information, ease of use, reporting and statistical recordkeeping and a very user-friendly patient portal. I want to thank our Physician EHR Committee and our staff for their hard work in making this a smooth transition.

This year, GSHCS received The Oregonian’s “Top Workplaces in Oregon” award (for the third time). This award is based on numerous criteria, as determined by an employee survey conducted by Energage.

Looking forward, we will be updating, expanding and remodeling our Cardiopulmonary Rehab Center and our Diagnostic Imaging and Laboratory waiting areas. We also look forward to opening a new Family Practice clinic, a comprehensive pain management program and industrial medicine program within the Good Shepherd Medical Plaza.

We will soon begin the third of a three-year Service Excellence Initiative – focusing on improving patient experience and satisfaction. We are excited about the results that we have seen! Last year, we received 39 “break-through awards” for improved patient satisfaction results in relation to our Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) Surveys and awarded through Custom Learning Systems.

Again, we thank you for your support and the confidence that you place in us.

Thankful All of us on a daily basis get up and go through our daily routine. We take for granted the fact that we ourselves, and our families, will be safe going from point A to point B, and anywhere and everywhere in-between.

Now, imagine with me if you would. What if on that same ordinary morning you get up, go through your same routine, get in your car and head for work – then in an instant your life changes!

That is exactly what happened to Halee Eaton on Thursday, November 9, 2017, at approximately 7:30 am.

Halee recalls getting ready for work, getting in the car and putting the car in drive – when her mom knocks on the window and says, “Halee, wipe that dew off your windows before you drive off. There’s a lot of fog out this morning, I love you, be safe.” Halee put the car in park, wiped down the window, turned up the defroster and headed off to work. Her mom says she remembers watching Halee from her rearview mirror turn onto Diagonal safely with a sigh of relief, since that road is always a concern with its speedy traffic and trucks.

Halee made her way to the corner of Edwards and Feedville Road in Hermiston. Although her memory fails her due to the accident, she can only assume that she did on that morning what she did each and every day. She looked left, looked right and pulled out into the intersection. Halee was T-boned on the driver’s side by an oncoming pickup going 55-60 mph and punted 300 feet into a field.

Once EMS crews arrived, Halee was then rushed to the Emergency Department at Good Shepherd Health Care System by ambulance with several life-threatening injuries that left her body mangled and in pieces. Halee’s mother, Ronda, recalls receiving a Facebook message from friend and ER Nurse Susan Stephens at approximately 8:20 am. “Ronda, Halee’s been in an accident and you need to get here as soon as you safely can”. Ronda’s reply, “How is she?”

Susan finished, “I don’t know.”… A whirlwind of thoughts and emotions happened between that call and Ronda’s arrival to the Emergency Department at Good Shepherd Health Care System.

When Ronda arrived, she was in a frenzied state of panic, which most people would be in at this point.

When Ronda sees Halee for the first time, she loses it and is confronted with a reality she never thought she would have to face, am I going to lose my daughter today? But at that same instant, she was comforted

By this time the trauma crew is here and in place, the attending ER physician, Dr. Stewart Swena, consults with the trauma surgeon Dr. Christopher Keeler. The room is abuzz with people coming and going, checking, re-checking, touching, and taking vitals on Halee.

With every bit of strength that her mother could muster, she looked at her daughter and told her, “NO, you’re not dying. But I need you to be very strong and fight as hard as you possibly can.” After Dr. Keeler performs an assessment of Halee’s injuries and is informed that Kadlec Regional Medical Center in TriCities, WA had no trauma beds,

At one point after a few questions as to what happened, Halee turned to her mother with a tear in her eye and asked her “Am I dying???”

Dr. Keeler consults with Ronda and explains everything that he is going to do, puts his arms around her and lets her know that everything is going to be alright.

Halee visits Dr. Swena, the ER physician who cared for her on that fateful day.

After surgery, weather conditions were uncooperative and Lifelight had to use their fixed wing to transport Halee. Her mother remembers staring at her seemingly lifeless daughter the entire flight.

In shock, disbelief and praying constantly.

She remembers thinking, “I’ve seen this in the movies, it’s never a good ending.” Please don’t take me from her, she needs my strength and I need confirmation of being with her every second I can.”

Upon arrival at Legacy Health’s ER in Portland, Halee was assessed by several surgeons, general trauma, and orthopedists. Immediately Ronda was escorted away from her daughter to a waiting room.

After hours of surgical exploration from the doctors to make sure that nothing was missed and nothing else needed to be done, Halee was resting – fully-medicated and on a breathing tube in Neuro Trauma ICU.

First Responders and Susan Stephens, RN, and Christopher Keeler, DO, attended Halee’s birthday party where she expressed her gratitude for another year of life.

The next morning the ICU doctor came in and introduced himself and stated that Dr. Keeler had saved her life, and if the team at Good Shepherd had not done what they had to care for Halee she would not have made it.

With the knowledge of organ damage, removal of her spleen, right ovary, broken hip and pelvis in many places, Halee would have a long recovery ahead of her. After a five-hour surgery on Monday to repair her hip and pelvis, she would need to learn how to walk again – if she was ever able to walk again.

Since that fateful incident, Ronda and Halee have made several trips to GSHCS to meet with those individuals who took care of her. As one might imagine, it was a reunion filled with emotions for both parties. As GSHCS staff recounted their experience, they were amazed at how well Halee was doing and how well she has healed from the injuries she sustained in the accident.

Today Halee continues to live in Hermiston and is forever grateful for the care that she received at GSHCS. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding their reunion, Halee and her team of caregivers will be forever friends.

As Halee continued to progress, her diagnosis was surprisingly more positive with each day. She was moved from NTICU after three days to step down TRACU and released to go home from the hospital after only two weeks, the day before Thanksgiving.

So THANKFUL!!!

On March 18, 2018, Ronda had a surprise birthday party for Halee in which she invited as many first responders as she could find, the ER team, and physicians involved in her care – many of whom were able to be in attendance. She stated that, “It’s an important closure to the circle. Not only does Halee need to meet the people that worked feverishly to save her life and show An emotional reunion in the Surgery Suite.

Rural Respiratory Care

With a gleam in their eye, spring in their step and a dream of improving the lives of those suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Good Shepherd Home Medical Equipment Respiratory Therapists saw the need of developing the Rural Respiratory Program.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), chronic lower respiratory diseases are the fourth leading cause of death in America – similar statistics hold true for Oregon and Umatilla and Morrow Counties.

“It’s a horrible way to die,” exclaimed Home Respiratory Therapist, Sarah Campbell, who shared that she has held the hands of many affected with this condition as they have taken their last breath. “I know there was something more we could do about it in the outpatient setting.

After attending a conference back east, it kindled a fire within me to take what I had learned and apply it to our community. After discussing it with my manager, we decided the benefits this program would provide for our community were well worth the investment. That’s when the Rural Respiratory Program was born,” continued Campbell.

Individuals suffering from COPD often have recurring hospital stays – termed in the industry as hospital readmissions, something the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) penalizes hospitals for.

Many of these readmissions are preventable with the right education and follow up. That is where the Rural Respiratory Program steps in.

So how exactly does this program work? According to Home Respiratory Therapist, Michael Erickson, the program is designed to work closely with an individual’s Primary Care Provider (PCP). “A lot of our time is spent with our physician community. We are a resource for physicians and are essentially their eyes and ears in the patients’ home. Building these relationships with PCP’s has been crucial to not only the success of the program, but ultimately the success of their patients. We make the house calls that they are unable to do.”

According to Campbell, once they receive a referral from a PCP, they are fully engaged in helping their patients achieve the outcome they desire. “Our assessments are extensive and spend a lot of time

with our patients on that initial visit. We conduct a full history and physical and educate-educateeducate. Education is really important to help our patients understand where their condition is at, how to make it better or how to sustain the level where they are at to not get worse. We look at their lifestyle and provide counsel on lifestyle, exercise, and nutrition – sometimes there are multiple factors that we notice in the home that may be deteriorating a patient’s health. We want to make sure they understand how to make it better.”

“We work hard to build a trusting relationship. This allows us to see if there are any social determinants of health that can be addressed by colleagues in other areas,” assured Campbell, “And, so far, it has been working”.

Working closely with other services within Good Shepherd Health Care System, they have begun to build a healthcare ecosystem focusing on many of the components of Population Health – better health outcomes for patients, enhancing the patient experience, lowering health care costs, and improving the clinician experience. Just what does that mean? It means that through working with other departments such as Education, Community Health Workers, Community Paramedic, Diabetes Education, Cardiopulmonary Rehab, Home Health, Hospice, and Personal Home Care – they are able to

successfully collaborate to improve the healthcare experience and health outcomes of everyone from the underserved in the community to the sickest patients.

This collaboration was no accident, “Our services have been aligned for quite some time,” stated Campbell, who continued, “But we are recognizing that through a coordinated effort it will ultimately help us reduce the overutilization of healthcare services – especially the Emergency Room and prevent hospital readmissions.”

According to Campbell and Erickson, they have also been working closely with CHI St. Anthony in Pendleton, Morrow County Health District, Columbia River Health, Mirasol Family Health Center, and other organizations to provide this service for their patients – truly making this service available throughout Umatilla and Morrow Counties.

Another benefit to the Rural Respiratory Program is that it is available for all ages and available to anyone with a chronic respiratory condition.

So how does one go about becoming a patient of the program? “Well, it’s not as difficult as you might think.

The preferred method is always for us to get a referral from a patient’s physician,” shared Campbell, who continued, “But we are willing to work with anyone that is in need and help them get a referral when needed.”

When asked how much this service would cost a patient, Campbell and Erickson shared that the service is actually available for free.

From the moment women see the backsplash that adorns the entrance wall to the Good Shepherd Women’s Center, it gives you a spa type of atmosphere. Once in the lobby women take notice of the natural light and warmth that surrounds the space. As you are called back for your appointment, you are greeted by the same color pallet that is calming and soothing throughout the 11,000 square foot space. Natural light continues to guide the path to the exam rooms, which are all on the interior part of this space – keeping each woman’s

privacy a top-of-mind priority.

While in the exam room, you will notice they are more spacious.

Two procedure rooms and ultrasound rooms are also available in the new space.

Our OB/GYN physicians, Diana Edenfield, MD, Leila Keeler, DO, and Allison Khavkin, MD, are an integral part of this collaborative team. They are available for all facets of OB/GYN care and provide consultation and collaboration with the Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) as needed. They are available for higher-risk pregnancies, provide annual gynecological services, and gynecological surgeries – including da Vinci robotic-assisted surgeries, which offer speedier recovery, and reduced pain and scarring.

and their families. Midwives are able to care for low-risk pregnancies and women in later stages of life for gynecology. They work collaboratively with the OB/GYN for consultations and with higher-risk pregnancies.

As we continue to look toward the future of women’s care in our community, this new space has room to grow – space for new healthcare providers and room to care for more women in our community. We have more appointments available for gynecology and for obstetric care than we have had in the past. No longer limited by space, we are poised to meet the growth of our community.

Family Birth Center Our OB/GYN and CNM team work collaboratively with the Good Shepherd Family Birth Center located on the second floor of the hospital. The Family Birth Center provides the best in maternity care services. Our birthing suites are comfortable and come complete with Sanijet Jacuzzi tubs to help ease your labor pains, comfortable couches for your support person, and rocking chairs for you to soothe your newborn after delivery.

Personal Home Care In her book, No Place Like Home, Karen BuhlerWilkerson, PhD, RN, FAAN, shares, “The earliest US efforts to care for the sick at home (1813) were motivated by a tradition of religious benevolence among wealthy ladies of Charleston, S.C., who entered homes of the poor and dependent to provide care and domestic comfort.”

Similarly, Good Shepherd Health Care System’s (GSHCS) Home Health and Vange John Memorial Hospice department has been caring out acts of benevolence for community members. But there always seems to be more they have to offer, as GSHCS Home Health and Hospice Manager, Heather Osborne can attest, “There is a common misconception of what Home Health can provide. Almost on a daily basis, our teams receive calls from community members who have an interest and desire for us to help with their personal caregiving needs. However, Home Health requires a skilled need only a nurse and physical/occupational/ speech therapy can offer. If these skilled need that are needed in the home, then we can provide a bath aide, but only for the duration of the skilled need.”

“Over the past 12 months, we have had an increase in inquiries for home caregivers. With no other home caregiver agency services in the community, we saw a need, decided to take action and created a service the community was requesting. Personal Home Caregiving is a great addition to the

services Good Shepherd offers our community,” continued Osborne.

So if a physician’s order is needed to meet specific home health needs, what can a Personal Home Caregiver provide? According to Ms. Osborne, Personal Home Caregivers can provide non-skilled services such as bathing, personal grooming and hygiene, dressing, shopping and errands, mobility, nutrition, hydration and feeding, laundry, medication assistance, toileting, housekeeping, medical appointment assistance, and transportation assistance.

“Personal Home Care services can be used for a variety of needs,” shared GSHCS Vice President of Nursing, Theresa Brock, “For instance, if your mom is in need of one-on-one feeding assistance at her assisted living residence

during lunchtime, the personal home caregiver can come to that facility and assist mom with lunch, assist her to eat, assist her to clean up and then assist her back to her apartment. Or maybe you just had a surgery and you need someone to come in and assist you with bathing or doing laundry for a week.

Another example is maybe you have an elderly parent living with you and they need some companionship, someone to take them out to lunch and even to a movie. Really, we are able to accommodate many circumstances to help care for your needs.”

Good Shepherd Personal Home Care caregivers can assist private pay and Medicaid clients. Some private insurances do pay for this service and if it is a covered benefit, they would be able to bill a client’s insurance on the client’s behalf.

Initial assessments are completed by a registered nurse. Care could begin the next day – pending staffing and needs.

Good Shepherd Urgent Care Now Open Seven Days A Week

Just in time for cold and flu season the Good Shepherd Urgent Care (GSUC), formerly Gifford Urgent Care, has extended hours to offer services seven days a week. With the ever-increasing need for primary care services throughout the region, this was a strategic move

by Good Shepherd Health Care System (GSHCS) Administration to fulfill the promise they made when acquiring the Gifford Urgent Care to expand services to meet the urgent healthcare needs of an ever-growing community.

Essentially, the GSUC expansion of services will give community members another walk-in option in addition to the Emergency Department at GSHCS for lower acuity conditions that can be cared for adequately in the Urgent Care setting. These conditions include; cold, flu, pink eye, sore throat, ear ache, joint and muscle pain, breaks and sprains, urinary tract infections, bladder infections, back pain, minor

cuts and lacerations, skin conditions, burn care, and many additional illnesses and injuries.

The GSUC also provides lab and X-ray services in the convenience of the same location. These services

aid physicians and other providers in making diagnoses and treatment as accurate and expedient as possible for Urgent Care customers – without having to be sent to another location for these services.

Good Shepherd Recognized for Excellence in Patient Care and Employee Engagement On Wednesday, January 31, 2018, the 18th Annual Night of Excellence Summit Awards Celebration was the culmination of this year’s Health Care Service Excellence Conference (HCSEC) held at the Hyatt Regency in San Antonio, TX. In 2017, the Summit Awards committee received over 265 nominations from 20 different healthcare organizations spanning 10 states – 54 of the nominations were chosen as Pinnacle Achievers (the best of the best), and 15 of those were presented with a Summit Award.

The Summit Award is the highest award of excellence presented at the HCSEC. It is awarded to qualified, innovative, and progressive individuals, teams, and healthcare facilities who made outstanding progress towards improving the patient experience and staff engagement. Individuals, teams, and organizations must be nominated to be eligible for a Summit Award.

by Custom Learning Systems (CLS) during the annual HCSEC, a conference dedicated to delivering evidence-based solutions to help healthcare organizations improve the overall patient experience. Good Shepherd Community Health Foundation Welcome to the Good Shepherd Community Health Foundation. We are an active and vibrant medical and community health foundation to improve the health and quality of life in our communities. Thank you for your valued support over the years in benefiting the health of our community members.

2018 was an outstanding year for the Foundation. Total contributions given to our local communities were valued at $230,000. Over $170,000 were given as grants to nonprofit organizations for health-related causes. Twenty-two students, attending various colleges and universities, received medical scholarships for a total of $36,500.

The Festival of Trees event was held in December 2018 at the Hermiston Community Center. Beautifully decorated trees, wreaths, and stockings were auctioned to benefit the work of Good Shepherd Community Health Foundation and Hermiston Kiwanis. It was a marvelous event and we look forward to December 2019.

Christmas Spirit Awards were presented in December to Cathy Wamsley and Robert Luke. These individuals were nominated by community members for their spirit of giving throughout the year.

We begin 2019 with excitement, optimism, and the desire to do more. Looking forward, the deadline for medical scholarship applications is February 28th, 2019. Scholarships are available to qualified medical students living within West Umatilla and Morrow counties.

Our 26th Annual Scramble for Scholarships Golf Tournament is scheduled for Friday, June 7, 2019, at Big River Golf Course in Umatilla.

It will be a wonderful day of golf, good food, and exceptional prizes.
