Biblical history and Christian history are packed with stories of men and women who made decisions based on the knowledge that God’s promises were as sure as if they had already occurred.
One morning, a young man awoke and began his day. His daily toil as a servant held no status of importance. He had no riches in this world’s goods. As he began the morning tasks of obtaining water and preparing a meal, his eye happened to glance over the city wall. What he saw absolutely terrified him.
The young man rushed to his master to tell him the horrible news: “The Syrian army has completely surrounded our town with horses and chariots!” Fully expecting to die that very day, the young man asked his master, “What shall we do?”
The servant was stunned to hear the master reply, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” Thinking the old man must have not heard him or perhaps he was out of his mind, the servant was about to respond when he heard the prophet praying. “Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.” God performed the requested miracle, and the young man saw that “the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”
You can read the entire story in 2 Kings 6. We don’t know what Elisha saw, but there is nothing in the Bible to say that Elisha ever saw the angelic armies surrounding him. He simply knew they were there. Elisha had seen the one chariot of fire take Elijah to glory (2 Kings 2:10-12), and for the rest of his life, he was conscious of the presence of God. Elisha didn’t need to see the fiery chariots to know that God was continually with him. Elisha knew God would be faithful to His Word, and he lived his life consistent with that assurance.
When difficulties reveal themselves in our experience, how do we respond? While none of us is promised tomorrow, rarely do we prepare breakfast with a genuine expectation of death before lunch.
Even so, our challenges are not insignificant. When we fear physical harm, are we conscious of the angelic host around us? When our children are sick or hungry, do we feel the presence of Him who is our Provision? When we lose a relationship, to either death or estrangement, do we see hope in the glorious beams from Calvary’s cross?
Of Moses, the author of Hebrews wrote, “…he endured as seeing Him who is invisible” (Hebrews 11:27). Moses lived as if God’s Word was more real than what he could see and feel. What would our world be like if all God’s people lived lives focused on Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2)? Just maybe, the world would turn upside down once again (Acts 17:6).
