Triumphal Entry: Jesus, King Of Kings

Zechariah 9:9: “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”

God cares about details. He speaks prophecies so we can have irrefutable proof that He keeps His word, and no detail is too small for Him to accomplish. A seemingly simple donkey ride into the temple is a fulfillment of time, kingship, and salvation prophecies. We’re just going to focus on Jesus’ kingship here.

Let’s set the scene. Multitudes of people were in Jerusalem for the upcoming Passover festival— scholars estimate as many as 3 million. A great number of people had followed Jesus from Bethany, where Lazarus had just been publicly raised. Another great number of people came out of the city to greet Him. The description in the Gospels indicates that the people coming out of the city actually began shouting “Hosanna,” not the crowd following from Bethany. Until this point, Jesus rejected praise and major attention. He silenced demons, asked healed people to tell no one, and said on multiple occasions, “My time has not yet come.” But now, a week before His death, He told the Pharisees in Luke 19:40 that if the people were silent, the rocks would cry out in praise.

A royal processional in those days would have been opulent and costly, attended firstly by the elite of society. In God’s Kingdom, the first shall be last and the last shall be first. Here to welcome their King and salvation are normal people visiting for a festival who found something in nature to lay before the King. The palm branches were symbols of

triumph and victory, but the donkey was a symbol of peace and humility (compared to a horse, which was a symbol of war). He is, after all, our Prince of Peace.

The next day, He cleansed the greedy from the temple. He was more concerned with religious corruption than Roman oppression. He told the disciples to pay their taxes to Caesar and carry luggage for the soldiers, but for those using God’s temple and laws for their own gain, He had much harsher words and actions. He came bringing news

of God’s Kingdom, not an earthly one that would simply overtake Rome or any other earthly power. The Kingdom of Heaven is transcendent and eternal. Jesus came and died to save our souls, not our allegiance. He wants to be the King of our hearts, not our countries.

What can we offer to lay before our King? What path can we make for Him into the temple of our hearts? Will we celebrate His reign and salvation or let the rocks do it in our silence?
