Just as Jesus suffered for three the Church, underwent three centuries of persecution, which were but a continuation of Calvary. And as, after three days, Jesus rose from the dead, glorious and immortal, so after three centuries of persecution, His Mystical Body, the Church, rose from its underground existence to new freedom and began to spread throughout the world.

ages. In addition, each individual Christian will be a sign of contradiction amid the allurement and maxims of the world in the measure that he or she lives his or her Christian vocation. Perhaps at no time in the 20 centuries of the Christian era has there been such a distortion of the true meaning of freedom as in the truth that makes one free. Today, influenced by the secular humanism of this century, the freedoms guaranteed by the US Constitution are interpreted by the court and legislative bodies of our country as the right to take the life of the unborn, the right to let a physician aid in ending one's own life, the right of the media to publish immoral matter, the right of our educational system to exclude religion from the public educations, and the right to publish pornographic filth. The Cross. The love that Jesus spoke of in His farewell address has the dimension of sacrifice, the sacrifice He was about to make on Calvary the following day: “Greater love than this no one has, that one lay down his life for his friends.” Love, as the world understands it, is essentially self-seeking. Love in the Christian sense is essentially self-sacrificing. The division between those whose first love is God and those who first love is self might also be expressed as the division between those who accept the place of the

What Gets Measured Gets Managed MONEY MATTERS

WITH DR. ANDREW LEE Dr. Andrew Lee is professor of English at Lee University. He also serves as a coordinator for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. He and his wife Esmerelda have three children.

R

emember the last time you seriously tried to lose some weight? You were probably on the scale every day, watching your weight and writing it down in a journal or saving it in notes on your cell phone. By monitoring your weight every day, you were able to know precisely how much progress (or regress) you were making toward your goal. Similarly, some people like to keep a prayer journal to track their spiritual growth; besides offering a place for spiritual reflection, a prayer journal also serves as a daily reminder to take time to talk to God. It’s the same with our finances. We can know we’re serious about improving our financial situation when we start “measuring” our goals by writing them down, and “managing” our finances by keeping a written budget and monitoring our progress (or regress) regularly. Let’s see how this might look in real life. Sally begins by making a personal “balance sheet” for the first time in her life. She lists all her debts (or “liabilities”) on one side of a document, noting the precise amounts she owes and the names of all her creditors. In her case, the list includes college student loans, a car loan, and a few credit cards. Then she makes a list of her “assets” or things she owns, including her checking and savings account balances and a ring her grandmother left her. Sally immediately notices that she has a “negative net worth,” meaning she has more debts than she has assets. Once she has “measured” her financial situation by writing it down, she is now ready to “manage” it. Without first being honest with herself by examining her finances, Sally would likely never take that next crucial step to improve herself

10 // October 2019

financially. She next makes a written budget of her monthly bills, and notices that she should, in theory, have nearly seven hundred dollars left over every month after paying all of her bills, including debt payments. Where has this extra seven hundred dollars been going? Sally has no clue, so she examines her past ninety days of bank statements, seeing where every debit card “swipe” went. She discovers to her dismay that her “leftover” cash had disappeared through shopping online and eating out. Chastened but determined, Sally makes a new written plan where she will intentionally direct that extra seven hundred dollars per month toward her debts, paying them off one by one, from smallest balance to the largest balance. To her surprise, she realizes she can be debt-free in only two years using this plan (if she takes an extra weekend job, she can do it even faster). This realization inspires Sally to begin exploring how to build up her assets as soon as her debts are paid off. She realizes she has never signed up for her employer’s 401(k) retirement plan at work, and she starts looking into that. Unfortunately, she realizes she has missed out on lots of “free money” over the years since her employer offers a five percent “match” when employees contribute to their 401(k) via payroll deduction. Sally commits to enrolling in the plan immediately in order to get that free money every month. She also educates herself about setting up a Roth IRA using low-cost stock index mutual funds. With these simple steps, Sally’s finances will experience a fabulous turnaround in just a few years, and within two decades, she should be quite wealthy. It starts with “measuring,” and then “managing.” “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans” (Proverbs 16:3).

hen I think of bold women in the Bible, I think of Esther, who put her life on the line to save her people; Deborah, who was a prophet, judge,

and military leader; and, of course, Mary, the mother of Jesus. Each of these women, and many others, play a pivotal role in our Christian history. They each stood tests and hardships, yet they completed what God had called them to do. Reading about these courageous women inspires me to know that no matter what situation I go through and no matter what trial I face, God is always with me, and He is with you too. Now, I’ve never been the meek and mildtempered type, but even some of us who are known to be more outgoing and strong-willed can be worn down by the ways of the enemy. We go through many seasons as adults, and the enemy is always waiting for his chance to strike or trap us. Sometimes he succeeds, but it’s what we do in those moments that are the true test. I heard a man speak once about being a Navy Seal, and his team was on a mission to spy on a base in a foreign country. After they had been there for a few days the enemy trapped them and had them surrounded. With guns raised, they told these men to get down and that they were going to kill them. This gentleman said he looked at his captors and simply said no. They repeated themselves several times and the officer continued to say no. He said he refused to let them kill him that day, and he told them they were going to get back in their boat and leave. Sure enough, the enemy let them go. I have to wonder what kind of strength of faith and boldness it took for that man to look his enemy in the eye and tell him, “No!” We should all take a lesson from this. When the enemy comes for our family, our finances, our minds, or our faith, we need to reach down into our spirit, look the enemy in the

Most of the time, we immediately think of all of the negatives, but there are many ways that singlehood can bring a fruitful and fulfilling life. Singles have more time to devote to serving and helping others. There aren’t as many demands on their time, so this opens up countless opportunities to bless others. There is a freedom that comes from being able to function and make decisions without having to include numerous other family members. Being able to come and go as needed opens up a whole new world for the single that the married person very rarely gets to experience.

Gò0dNews for Domestic Violence

My Story of Survival s I thought about how to put my story into words suitable for this magazine and still express emotion, both good and bad, I was stuck. How in the world can I narrow approximately 15 years of abuse down to one page? Domestic violence/abuse is a difficult topic to discuss. It’s just no fun to talk about, but it needs to be discussed, so let’s talk about it! Here’s the short version of my story of survival. It didn’t start out as abuse. There were good times. On the other hand, there were definitely more bad times than good. Here’s a surprise for y’all—the first of many, I’m sure. I was in two abusive relationships. One was far more abusive for my children and me than the other was. I was 18 when I married my first husband. The verbal, emotional, and physical abuse drained me. I stayed depressed more than happy. At the time, for my whole adult life, this was my “normal.” We had two children. Our daughter was born before we were married, and our son came 14 months after her. For 10 long years, I was an emotional wreck. I was verbally abused almost daily. During our marriage, he was an addict, which caused him to have highs and lows: good moods and really bad moods. We fought and argued in front of our kids most of their childhood. He was constantly moving in and out of the home. They still mention things from time to time that bother them. It wasn’t a safe environment at all for them. I had been stabbed once and threatened countless times with knives. Finally, in late 2008, I had enough. I was tired of it. I had to get out. For a while, my two older kids and I lived peacefully. Then, out of nowhere, there I was, stuck again: only this time, it was worse. I was pregnant during most of the relationship. We were only together for 16 long months. It was literally a daily fight for survival. I always had bruises on my arms, I often had black eyes, I had a broken jaw once, my hair was constantly pulled out by the handfuls, I was kicked, hit, and slapped, I had guns held in my mouth and knives held to my neck, and I was choked unconscious at least twice. When we found out that I was pregnant with a baby girl, he tried every way he could to make me have

24 // October 2019

a miscarriage. The verbal abuse was a constant thing. Of course, I could go on and on with stories of abuse, but I’d much rather tell you how I survived! God gave me the strength to overcome and survive every single situation. He healed my wounds, both internally and externally. He kept reminding me that He had a hedge of protection around me and my babies. Looking back, I remember certain situations. God sent people to me at the perfect time. He prevented situations from getting worse, and He gave me the strength to get out. I’ve had people ask me why I didn’t get out sooner or why I allowed it to continue. That’s the most insensitive thing to say to

a victim. I felt trapped and helpless. I had very low selfesteem. It’s not as easy as it may seem. So, in closing, I want to make it clear that I know that God was with me. I’m alive today because of Him. My baby girl was born healthy and whole from head to toe, and she is a prayer warrior already at the age of 8! God spared us both and protected my two other children. I don’t regret a day of it. I would do it all over again. It is my testimony! God has been so good to me. It’s an honor to witness to victims of domestic violence. Had I not at one time been a victim, I’d have no story to tell. If you know anyone who is a victim, please let them know that there is help; there’s hope. Joy comes in the morning! About The Author

I couldn’t understand why kids couldn’t like me for who I was. Fortunately, I attended a Christian school and a Christian college, so the peer pressure to do bad things or go bad places really wasn’t a factor in my life. I loved God and really wanted to please Him. I had learned over time that I wasn’t going to be able to please a lot of people. I was a pleaser by nature, so that was difficult to deal with emotionally. But, I sought solace in my relationship with God. Here’s the good news: God didn’t disappoint me.

America’s Quietest Health Risk: What You Need to Know by Shannon Alvey

Life. Love. Legacy. 34 // October 2019

SIX STEPS FOR FIGHTING LONELINESS 1. Acknowledgment – Just like depression or any other ailment that feels terrible, you’d be surprised at the number of people who remain in denial without admitting to their feelings of loneliness. Acknowledging bouts of loneliness and understanding that it’s a feeling, not a fact, can help you move past it. 2. Make a Plan to Tackle Your Habit – After acknowledging your bouts of loneliness and understanding how susceptible you can be to isolation, you can more clearly plan and act toward improving your habits. Making an intentional plan is a huge step toward making progress. Start off simply and tackle one habit at a time until you’ve mastered it and it’s become a second-nature new habit. Then go back and take on another one. 3. Focus on Others and Be Curious – Whether new or old, your relationships with people can travel so much further if the others feel supported and heard. Rather than focus on your own feelings or insecurities, focus your attention on the other person. This will relieve pressure from focusing on your own imperfections or negative self-talk and will make them feel appreciated and more likely to open up. 4. Use Technology to Stay Connected – As you grow older, your social circle of family and friends are likely to spread or dwindle. One way to supplement your in-person contact is to maintain your long-distance relationships using technology. There are plenty of options in this digital age: online chat, online video chat, video on your phone, email, etc. While learning a new digital platform can be challenging, once you get the hang of it, advantages include convenience and accessibility. 5. Volunteer – Finding the right volunteer opportunity that works well with your personal goals and core values can be beneficial on so many levels. Not only will you have the chance to meet new people, you can benefit by feeling healthier, less stressed and happier, inspiring others to give back. 6. Sign Up for a Class – What have you always been curious about learning? Now you have another reason to prioritize signing up for a class about it. There are so many benefits to lifelong learning, including expanding your growth experiences, building up your neuroplasticity, and of course, creating another opportunity to meet new people.

oneliness and social isolation are on the rise, more than one-third of Americans over the age of 45 report feeling lonely, with prevalence especially high among those over 65 years old. Over 6 million adults 65 and older have a disability that requires assistance in order to leave the home, and over half of older adults live alone. Lonely older adults may stop eating or getting dressed and become housebound, increasing the risk for frailty and injury. The evidence is abundant and decisive: social connection significantly affects health. When you believe that you have people in your life who care about you, and you interact with them regularly, you are better off. For instance, you may be less likely to catch a cold, have Consequences of a stroke or heart disease, slip Loneliness Include: into early cognitive decline • 45 percent increase in risk of death and develop depression. Other research suggests that loneliness is as damaging to our health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day and worse than being obese or sedentary. Knowing the difference between isolation and loneliness can help you tackle the source of your feelings: • Signs of isolation include living alone, having no close relatives, never leaving the house, not participating in phone or digital chat or being alone for nine or more hours per day. • Someone suffering from loneliness wishes for more friends, doesn’t see friends and family enough, doesn’t meet enough people, has no one to rely on and spends holidays alone. My new job humbled me because success didn’t come so quickly. It forced me to my knees in prayer, desperately pleading to God for things to be different, for things to be better, or for a change. That’s what God does; He allows us to go through difficult times to remind us of our need for Him, our need to spend time with Him, and our need to talk with Him. That is how we know the voice of the Lord. I knew the voice of my roommate Cliff because I saw him, talked with

Fight breast cancer and get peace of mind with an annual mammogram.

A

by Hailey Gaskin, FNP-C

ccording to the American Cancer Society, by the end of 2019, an estimated 268,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed. A woman currently has a 1

in 8 chance of developing breast cancer in her lifetime. These statistics make breast cancer the most common cancer among women, excluding skin cancer. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, so it is a great time for us to review our knowledge of this disease. At Starr Regional Medical Center, we believe awareness is more than a single month. It is about staying informed and taking the

Annual mammograms and reducing your risk Early detection is key to fighting breast cancer and can lead to an easier treatment plan. An annual mammogram is the best method for early detection. A mammogram is a simple, routine screening that helps detect breast cancer early, before symptoms may appear. Screening mammograms are recommended for women 40 years and older. If you are at a higher risk for breast cancer, you may need to begin mammograms earlier.

right steps to fight breast cancer, which includes the use of annual mammograms to aid in early detection. Here is a quick refresher on the basics of breast cancer. How does it start? Breast cancer is caused by a genetic abnormality. Only 5 – 10 percent of breast cancers come from an abnormality inherited from your parents. The vast majority are caused by abnormalities related to aging. While most breast cancers are detected in women age 50 and above, there are other risk factors: family history of breast cancer, lack of physical activity, drinking alcohol and being overweight or obese after menopause. Younger women may also be at risk. Women under 45 account for roughly 11 percent of new breast cancer How do I know if I have it? Breast cancer symptoms can vary from person to person. Warning signs include: • New lump in the breast or underarm • Thickening or swelling of part of the breast • Irritation or dimpling of the breast skin • Redness or flaky skin on the breast • Breast or nipple pain • Nipple discharge • Changes in the size or shape of the breast These symptoms can also be caused by conditions other than cancer and some individuals exhibit no symptoms.

38 // October 2019

In addition to annual mammograms, the following proactive measures will help lower your risk for breast cancer: regular exercise, eating a healthy diet, limiting alcohol and maintaining a healthy weight. Scheduling an annual mammogram to aid in early detection and living a healthy lifestyle can give you the peace of mind that comes from staying on top of your breast health. If you would like to schedule a mammogram or talk with a provider about your breast health, Starr Regional can help. Call 423.744.3372 or visit the “Find a Doctor” tab at StarrRegional. com and you will be connected to the right care. Gò0dNews for your Vascular System

A Closer Look At Limb Amputation ach year, nearly 180,000 Americans undergo the amputation of a limb, often as a result of complications associated with peripheral artery disease (PAD). Providers at the Vascular Institute of Chattanooga (VIC) celebrate therapies preventing unnecessary amputations and educating the Tennessee Valley on ways to prevent the potential loss of a limb. A staggering 18 million Americans suffer from PAD, a potentially life-threatening disease where plaque, including calcium, builds up along blood vessel walls, narrowing the arteries and reducing blood flow to the legs and feet, according to the Amputee Coalition, a national organization working to support people with limb loss. Of those suffering from PAD, up to 3.5 million have progressed to critical limb ischemia (CLI), the most severe form of PAD, where the blood vessels become dangerously narrow and can lead to pain when resting, ulcers or sores, and gangrene. If left untreated, PAD/CLI can lead to unnecessary amputation. Limb loss is not uncommon, and sadly, the majority of amputations associated with PAD would be preventable with early detection and treatment. More than 2 million Americans live with limb loss, and that number grows by 185,000 each year. Our goals are to heighten public awareness about limb loss and increase the public’s understanding of prevention—especially for those most at risk. Statistics • The main causes of limb loss are vascular disease (54 percent), trauma (45 percent), and cancer (less than 2 percent). • 60 percent of vascular-related amputations are preventable. • Diabetes and vascular disease are the leading causes of limb loss.

44 // October 2019

• There are 2.1 million people living with limb loss in the US, and that number is expected to double by 2050. • More than 54 percent of patients were not assessed via diagnostic angiogram to determine if blood flow could be restored before the amputation. • The estimated cost to American private and public insurance agencies is $12 billion annually. The risk for developing PAD rises with age and is highest for those over 50 years old. Smoking, the single greatest risk factor, increases the chance of developing PAD by three to five times. But, other common risk factors include diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels, and heart disease. The most common symptoms of PAD are leg pain, leg muscle fatigue, coldness or numbness in the lower legs, and foot or leg cramps. These are often overlooked because people think their PAD symptoms are a part of the aging process and do not realize they are suffering from the disease. Waiting to talk to a doctor to get the diagnosis and begin treatment may allow the disease to progress to a more severe state. Many people are unaware of the causes of amputation and often see limb loss in just a few categories: the wounded warrior or the accomplished athlete. The fact is, limb loss affects every generation from young to old and people from all walks of life. Those at greatest risk are people who have diabetes or a vascular impairment from PAD. Cancer is also a cause of limb loss, but traumatic limb loss can happen to anyone—from lawnmower and farm equipment accidents to motorcycle and car accidents.

He knew that his son Solomon would be the one to fulfill all that he had fought for. It’s easy for me to think back several years to being a young man and the aspiration I carried to be something great. I dreamed of constructing something monumental that could earn the admiration of men and the approval of God.
