The foundation of commUNITY is our salvation and not our similarity. • Philippians 1:27: “Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel.” • Philippians 3:20: “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.” “Conduct yourselves” literally means to “behave like citizens.” In other words, our citizenship in Heaven means that commUNITY is our birthright as Christians! Another way to say this is that we should not let our commUNITY be

Fourth Commandment gives some very important advice: “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you” (Exodus 20:12). This includes: (1) obeying your father and your mother, (2) living a life that will make your father and mother proud of you, and (3) obeying the Ten Commandments. The Ninth Commandment says, “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.” Here, the term “neighbor” includes everyone. Basically, this commandment says that we should not lie to anyone. Remember: there is no such thing as a “little white lie.” A lie is a lie! “Do not take the name of the Lord in vain” is also good advice to add to your book of life. This means not to swear or use God’s name in any way that is not reverent. Today, it is

Just Give Me the Money MONEY MATTERS

WITH DR. ANDREW LEE Dr. Andrew Lee is professor of English at Lee University. He also serves as a coordinator for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. He and his wife Esmerelda have three children.

B

elieve it or not, this isn’t an article about taxes, though the title may have made you think so (maybe I’ll discuss taxes in a future column). The title of this column refers to relatives, friends, or co-workers who request or even demand that you give or loan them money with “no strings attached.” It’s a touchy subject, but since your financial well-being could depend upon it, let’s proceed. I agree with Dave Ramsey about loaning money to family, friends, or co-workers, meaning it’s better to “give” the money rather than to “loan” it with expectation of being paid back. If you cannot afford to give the money with no expectation of repayment, it’s best to tell them “no.” Loaning them money means that these friends and family are now indebted to you. And since the Bible says (in Proverbs) that the “borrower is slave to the lender,” you have now “enslaved” your family member or friend, no matter how good your intentions may have been. So, this sounds very noble and altruistic—giving away “free” money to loved ones who are in need. But not so fast; even these “gifts” are not completely “no strings attached,” or at least they shouldn’t be. Before handing over your hard-earned money, it would be wise to ask some questions and offer some advice to the recipient. This is especially true if the friend or relative has a habit of asking for money. What are they doing with their money every month, and why are they always broke? Are they working full-time? If not, perhaps that’s the solution. (There’s a great place to go when you’re broke—to WORK!) Are they spending beyond their means? Do they have a written monthly budget to track all their expenses? Ask to see their budget and offer

10 // November 2019

helpful advice to “teach them to fish for themselves” rather than simply giving them a fish (money) on a regular basis. These are truly “teachable moments” where you can impart financial wisdom about disciplined personal finance. Not only can you help improve the financial health of those you care about, but you’ll also be helping yourself by not having to continue to give your money to those who perhaps are mismanaging their finances. With these types of situations, I have the same rule as Dave Ramsey: “if you want my money, you have to take my advice, too.” It’s easier to give money to help your loved ones if you are confident they are taking steps in the right direction to improve their finances, so they don’t keep asking for more money in the future. Don’t get me wrong: this applies to personal situations with friends and loved ones who are asking you directly for money to “help them out.” I don’t demand a face-to-face meeting with my church leadership every Sunday before I write my tithe check, nor do I meet with the Boards of Directors to review the budgets of every charity where my wife and I donate money. However, I highly recommend that you perform some due diligence by researching online to see what you can learn about any non-profit group before making a substantial donation. In recent years, we’ve seen many news stories about how some charities use most of their donations to pay high salaries to their administrators, with only a small portion of the money actually reaching the needy for whom it was intended. Be sure to do your homework so that your giving is effective. That’s part of being a good steward of God’s money.

I know as men, we don’t like to think about things in our past, especially since we can’t fix them and there is nothing we can do about it. I’m not trying to elicit those thoughts in you, but what I know for a fact is that Jesus said in Matthew 6:15, “But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins.” It is easy to hold on to those hurts, put them on the shelves of our mind, and when it is convenient, take

I recently found myself in that space and started to tell myself that God was exasperated with me. Is He simply waiting for us to fail in the slightest? Proverbs 8:22-24 says, “The Lord possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was. When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.” He knew us. He knew us before we were born. Lately, I have been thinking about the toxic mindset that a lot of people have when it comes to Christ: the mindset that God is just waiting for you to fail Him. If you grew up thinking that God was only a taskmaster waiting for you to mess up in the slightest, then I want you to think about this for a moment. Gò0dNews for Parents

Battle Strategies For The Culture War love the ’50s. Everything from that decade seems so perfect and ideal to me. I sometimes wonder what the most difficult aspects of parenting were in that era: getting the kids ready for school in enough time to walk five miles uphill before the bell? Okay, so maybe that’s slightly cliché. But I can’t help but think how much simpler parenting must have been in a day with no cell phones, video games, or inappropriate billboards and commercials that require quick thinking to divert attention away from. No one can deny that one of the main struggles of parenting children in 2019 is the war our own culture is raging against us to win the hearts and minds of our kids. We battle a world

that is saturated with technology, materialism, greed, and self-promotion (just to name a few). Our children are bombarded with sin every day, whether it’s at school, on television, or in the music all around us. Those of us who want to raise Jesus-loving children are all too familiar with the challenges facing us. It sometimes feels a little like swimming upstream against a heavy current! But there are a few things I’ve learned in my own “upstream” parenting journey that may help or encourage you today in yours: 1. The world may seem hopeless, but YOU are not. We who are in Christ Jesus always have hope. We don’t have to surrender to the raging tide of culture. I see too many loving, Christian parents who throw in the towel without putting up a fight, taking on an attitude of “If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em.” But Jesus WILL overcome in the end! We don’t have to join in

20 // November 2019

the worldly behavior around us; we are called to something higher. The first step is to recognize the problem and admit that sometimes, you have been going with the flow of culture when it comes to your kids. Next, ask God to help you step out into a set-apart life. He will! 2. Once you have acknowledged that Christians are meant to be a “peculiar” people (1 Peter 2:9), engage in the culture war by addressing the sins that you see/hear around you as they happen. Don’t assume that because you take your kids to church, they can make the real-world application of right and wrong in the world around them. It’s confusing, to say the least, to be living in a society today that does not put into practice the truths of Scripture. What the Bible says is sin, the world says is okay or even wonderful. If we claim that the Bible is our guide for life, we should be referring to it when we encounter contradictory ideas in the world around us. We can point to the Word of God in all of life’s circumstances! Scripture truly is relevant to all of life. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, “All Scripture is Godbreathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” We can live this out every day with our children in dialogue and discussion. In fact, this is what the Word instructs us to do (Deuteronomy 6:7)! 3. Pray! Pray for wisdom and discernment concerning your children. Pray that God will help you to know when one of your children may be veering off path. I have asked God to shine a light on every dark corner in my children’s hearts, that no sin would be hidden. And He has answered that prayer many times! God loves our children even more than we do, and when we seek to raise them according to His ways, He will help us. That begins with asking for His help and obeying what the Holy Spirit reveals to us in prayer. I hope that this has encouraged you to keep on swimming against the tide of the world. With effort, patience, and God’s help, we can help our children to see that this sin-filled world truly has nothing to offer, and Jesus Christ is the only way to life everlasting. About The Author

If you have a Godgiven promise, purpose, and the desire to see it come to fruition, don’t lose faith, don’t worry, don’t be anxious, and don’t get ahead of God. Relax, be calm, and listen for His voice as He guides you in peace into His perfect plan for your life. Patient services are provided by office manager Beverly Stevison, patient care coordinator Rita Tatum and communications coordinator Hannah Walston. Since 2014, Ahlberg Audiology and Hearing Aid Services has been providing the highest level of hearing care to Cleveland and its surrounding communities. The practice has been voted number one for Audiologist and Hearing Aid Center by the Reader’s Choice “Best of the Best” for four consecutive years, establishing them as the premier destination for hearing healthcare. Offering state of the art technologies and patient care, services include diagnostic hearing evaluations, custom earmolds and earplugs (for musicians, hunting, flying, etc.), cerumen management, hearing conservation, central auditory processing screening, tinnitus treatment, comprehensive hearing device services, and cochlear implant programming. Audiologists at Ahlberg Audiology employ the highest standard of care for each patient, including individualized device programming and real ear measurement verification to ensure technological performance and comfort for all hearing aid patients. Ahlberg Audiology is the only facility in Bradley County that contracts with the Veteran’s Administration to provide veteran services for hearing and cochlear implant services. Today’s hearing devices are capable of amazing results. Technology, performance, comfort, and cosmetic appeal have evolved and improved tremendously in recent years, offering many different options for patients. While hearing aids make sounds comfortably louder, they are much more than just amplification; they are sophisticated, precisely tuned computers that are individually set for a specific hearing loss and listening lifestyle. Each hearing aid manufacturer offers unique product features, and finding just the right product to address specific listening

everyone. According to Dr. Ahlberg, “Some people are most interested in price, while others want a superior product for hearing background noise. Some specifically need Bluetooth capabilities, and some want rechargeable devices. Some want tiny, virtually invisible, in-the-ear devices, and others choose to keep the ear canal open with the unit behind the ear. There are options in technology, price, and performance for everyone.” Although many insurances cover hearing testing, coverage for hearing devices or hearing aid-related services continues to evolve. Ahlberg Audiology participates with most major health insurances. Our staff is able to verify benefits for individuals in advance of their appointment so that patients know what to expect prior to their visit. Ahlberg Audiology has recently relocated to 4220 North Ocoee Street in Cleveland, Tennessee, to provide easier access and enhanced technologies for patients. Hours of operation are Monday through Thursday 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. and Friday 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. If you or someone you know would benefit from the services of Ahlberg Audiology and hearing aid services, call (423) 641-0956 for an appointment. search of an immediate return on something less hopeful. Often, hope feels like a squirmy toddler who has just learned to crawl. Now distracted by every shiny thing that this mobile child now knows it can reach, holding the little bundle of joy becomes the equivalent of trying to wrestle an alligator. Fatigued from the fight, often the parent relents, letting the child loose. I wonder how many times our arms have gotten fatigued from holding a hope that has yet to come to pass but became hard to hold. An Intentional Marriage

I

by Rob England

believe that marriage is the backbone of families and that families are the backbone of the local church (with Christ at the head). Thus, there are few targets as great as marriage for Satan to attack. He can get the “most for his money” by going after Christian marriages especially. We cannot be passive in protecting our marriages and families. We must be intentional. Anything less than a proactive, godly fight for marriage is a recipe for likely failure. There are just too many outside forces attacking this God-ordained institution for us to stand by idly. Movies and television content have done a 180-degree turn in recent decades from the family-centered and family-

along with daily guidance from the Bible, is a must for a couple’s arsenal. 2. Humility. Ephesians 4:2-reminds us to live “with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Humility and the closely associated characteristic of selflessness are essential to a healthy marriage. 3. Mentorship. Find a couple who share the same values as you and your spouse and have found success (not perfection) in their marriage. They may be at a later life stage and/ or have been married longer than you and thus have experience and tips that could benefit you and your spouse. Have them over for dinner or take them out to lunch and humbly ask if they would be willing to share their story and wisdom and possibly walk alongside you in this journey. 4. Therapy/counseling. Marriage therapy should not be limited to only premarital counseling and last resorts before divorce.

1. Prayer. Marriage needs to be a prayer focus! Marriages are often fragile and attacked, especially in today’s world. Prayer,

friendly genres that used to be the norm. Pornography has never been more widespread or accepted in this country as it is today. The downfall of pastors and other church leaders due to sexual sin leaves us searching for role models and good examples of a strong, godly marriage. Spiritual warfare/attacks are ever present but hardly recognized and rarely spoken about. Is there any hope? Yes, there is! There are more facets of, and strategies to, marriage than can be covered in this article, but here are a few good starting points.

Just as we do not (or should not) hold off seeing a medical doctor until we are severely sick, we should not hold off seeking therapy until our marriage is severely sick. Instead, take a proactive approach. Proverbs 11:14 says, “Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.” Marriage and family therapists are trained to help you navigate through wherever you are stuck in your marriage. Issues are best addressed early; however, it is never too late in your marriage to seek help. Therapy is generally short-termed, solution-focused, and tailored to each specific couple’s needs. Be intentional to keep your marriage strong! “What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate”(Matthew 19:6b). Rob England is a marriage and family therapist student intern at Lee University’s MFT Clinic and is currently finishing up his Master’s degree in marriage and family therapy. Rob is married to Rachel England, a Lee U. and PTS Seminary alumna. Together, they work on (and fumble through) the never-ending task of building a strong, Christ-centered marriage. Rob can be reached at englandr21@gmail.com.

Gò0dNews for Seniors

Agitation In A Senior With Alzheimer’s ne of the most common challenges family caregivers face when a loved one has Alzheimer’s disease is managing agitation. The behavior can negatively impact their quality of life as well as that of the family. It is often cited as a reason why families begin to explore memory care communities for their loved one. In order to prevent agitation or take steps to minimize it, dementia care experts say caregivers must first understand the possible causes.

Potential Triggers of Agitation in a Senior with Alzheimer’s 1. Disease-related changes in the brain. Alzheimer’s disease and similar forms of dementia can cause damage to the frontal lobe of the brain. This is the area that controls functions such as motivation, planning, self-control, and sequencing. When this area of the brain is damaged, it can be difficult for people to manage their reactions and understand consequences. The senior probably doesn’t realize his or her behavior is aggressive and intimidating. 2. Undiagnosed pain or discomfort. A person with Alzheimer’s disease often loses their verbal communication skills. This makes it difficult for them to express their feelings or explain that they are in pain. As a result, when an older adult feels pain, fatigue, hunger, or sorrow, they may act out in frustration. When your family member seems agitated or aggressive, try to identify the root cause. Ask if they are hungry, tired, or thirsty. Show them to the bathroom and see if they need to use it. It may also help to point to different areas of the body and ask them if they hurt. 3. Overstimulation. Another outcome of the physical damage caused to the brain is difficulty processing too many things at one time. As a result, persons with Alzheimer’s can be easily overwhelmed. Noisy, hectic environments may be especially difficult to handle. Because the adult may have difficulty managing multiple demands, they might become anxious, agitated, or aggressive. By controlling the environment, a caregiver may be able to help their loved one avoid becoming overstimulated. 4. Confusion. Sometimes, a person with Alzheimer’s disease will become anxious or agitated when they don’t understand what is happening around them. They may not understand why they need to get in the car or who the person in their home is. Irritability or agitation may be the

34 // November 2019

result. Family members may be successful in reducing some of this confusion by explaining who people are, even if they are someone the senior has known for years, or why they are being asked to do something. Understanding Sundowners Syndrome Another cause of agitation is actually a combination of symptoms that appear as the sun begins to make its descent. Sundowners Syndrome, also known as sundowning, causes anxiety, agitation, and aggression. Although caregivers may not be able to prevent sundowning entirely, here are some suggestions on how to better manage it: • Having a structured daily routine • Limiting caffeine intake • Reducing stimulation in the home, especially late in the day • Pulling the blinds and turning on the lights as the sun starts to set • Playing soothing music during the hours sundowning typically occurs

Gò0dNews from the Physician’s Desk Lung Cancer: Not Just “Smoker’s Disease” f you’re like many people, you may think of smoking as the most obvious cause of lung cancer. And while cigarette smoking has certainly been established as a major risk factor and the number one cause for lung cancer, it’s important to note that lung cancer is not just a “smoker’s disease.” In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), lung cancer is the second-most diagnosed cancer in both men and women in the U.S. and the leading cause of cancer death. As many as 20 percent of lung cancer fatalities can be attributed to those who have never smoked or used any form of tobacco, according to an article published by the American Cancer Society.

Risk factors Cigarette smoking remains the number one risk factor for lung cancer. The use of other tobacco products like pipes and cigars also increases your risk. Risk factors that can cause lung cancer in people who have never smoked include exposure to radon gas, carcinogens like asbestos and diesel exhaust, air pollution, and also certain gene mutations. Signs and symptoms Signs of the disease can vary from person to person. Some of those affected may have symptoms related to the lungs or another part of the body if the cancer has spread, or they may have a general feeling of being unwell. Most people will not have symptoms until the cancer has advanced. Symptoms may include: • Coughing that gets worse or doesn’t go away • Chest pain • Shortness of breath

38 // November 2019

• Wheezing • Coughing up blood • Constant feeling of being very tired • Weight loss without a known cause • Repeated instances of pneumonia • Swollen or enlarged lymph nodes inside the chest area between the lungs These signs can also suggest the presence of other illnesses as well, so it’s important to discuss any symptoms with your primary care provider. Prevention and early detection The good news is that there are several things you can do to help reduce your risk of developing lung cancer. The first and most important thing is to refrain from smoking, since cigarette smoking has been proven to cause the vast majority of lung cancer deaths in the U.S. Refraining from other uses of tobacco like pipes and cigars, testing your home for radon, limiting your exposure to carcinogens at work and home, and eating a healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables can also help you reduce your risk. Since lung cancer symptoms do not show up for most people until the disease has advanced, early detection can be a key to finding and more effectively treating lung cancer. A low-dose computed tomography scan (low-dose CT scan) uses special x-ray equipment and advanced technology to help identify suspicious spots on the lungs that may be cancerous. It is a painless test and usually takes less than one minute to complete. Low-dose CT scans do come with some risk, including the chance for fake-positive results and over-diagnosis leading to additional tests. Because of the risks, annual lung cancer screenings with this method are recommended only for those who: • Have a history of heavy smoking (30 packs a year or more) and • Smoke now or have quit within the past 15 years and • Are between 55 and 80 years old. Medicare and many insurance programs cover the cost of lung cancer screenings. Talk with your provider about your risks and if a lung cancer screening is right for you. If you don’t have a primary care provider, visit the Find a Doctor tab at starrregional.com to get connected with one today. For more information on lung cancer risks, symptoms, and prevention, visit www.cdc.gov/cancer/lung and www.cancer.org/cancer/lungcancer.html. About The Author

So how do you go about keeping yourself and your family safe as you go throughout your normal, everyday life? Here are some tips: 1. Don’t open emails that you do not recognize. If you don’t owe someone an “invoice,” then it is not legit. Before you open it, look at the attachment. If the attachment has the word “HTML” in it, then trash it! The “HTML” is a string of code that makes up a virus. When you open it, it downloads to your computer or phone, and then the little robot goes to work sending your “private information” (passwords, pictures, etc.) back to the person or group of people that sent it to begin with. 2. We started out in a cute little apartment, and about 10 months in, we bought our first house. Shortly afterward, Donnie felt the Lord calling him into ministry. We had been married almost three years when the first real obstacle of our race came about. We were pregnant with our first child. I had an easy pregnancy and enjoyed having a life grow inside me. I went two weeks over the due date, so the doctor thought it best to induce labor. We settled into the hospital, and the time came for them to do the final ultrasound to see how our firstborn son was positioned. I can still remember the look on the doctor’s face when he had to tell us that our son was stillborn. That was our first real test as a couple and, quite frankly, my first real test as a follower of Christ. After sitting on the sidelines for a while, we did the only

What’s In A Name? oy meets girl; they fall in love, marry, have kids, and live happily ever after! I can only imagine these were Leah’s dreams. Instead, Leah is the less-preferred wife of the Patriarch Jacob; she is the elder of two daughters and sister to Jacob’s real love, Rachel. Leah is the silent party to an “arranged marriage” (Genesis 29:16-30), finding disdain in her new husband’s eyes. Her longing for love and acceptance is voiced initially in Genesis 29:31-35: “And when the Lord saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb: but Rachel was barren. And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Surely the Lord hath looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me. And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Because the Lord hath heard that I was hated, he hath therefore given me this son also: and she called his name Simeon. And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have born him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi. And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the Lord: therefore she called his name Judah; and left bearing” (Genesis 29:31-35). Kids are important and are a key way in which Leah tells us her story. Rachel was popular and preferred but could not (yet) have children. In this regard, Jacob still interacts with Leah. Despite his lack of heartfelt affection, she yearns to find his acceptance. Leah bears her first child, Reuben, which means, “See, a son.” It’s as if the name serves as a testimony to Jacob: “See, a boy!” Her innermost thoughts are revealed by the sacred writer: “Now my husband will love me” (v. 32). Like Leah, we remain on the edge of our seats, awaiting Jacob’s approval. A second son is born: Simeon (derived from “hearing”). He may be named with the thought of the Lord’s “hearing” Leah’s plight (v. 33); this passage, though, tells nothing of Jacob’s response. Yet again, a third son is born, and Leah anticipates finally being joined in a closer relationship with Jacob (v. 34). In expectation, this son is named “attached,” or Levi: again, nothing from Jacob. Verse 35 points in a new direction: she bears a fourth son, but this time she looks intentionally in worship to the Lord. She rightly names this child Judah (meaning praise). Her story will continue, though for now, a pause for reflection occurs.

Leah is a family girl. She is cast as an obedient, elder daughter, following the direction of her father. Our modern conventions likely balk at how she is wed, but for now, taking the narrative as it is tells us Leah wanted this relationship to work: so much so, that child-bearing is part of how she expresses the longing of her heart. Despite the rejection she faces, she models a life of faith and worship. God is very much aware of her plight (v. 31-32 seeing her situation and blessing; v. 33 hearing her circumstances). The Lord favors her repeatedly, her children’s names are a testimony of God at work in her life, and He becomes the sole aim of her praise!

Leah’s story is a hard one, though; it serves as a litmus test of our own compassion. There remains much to explore in her biography, but at the very least, Leah is a reminder for us not to judge others quickly or too harshly. Instead, Leah is a reminder to hear the story of others: the story of women and children who have been unloved in life; the stories of how important families and kids are; and the stories of how hurt has been overcome by faith! My heart breaks hearing Leah’s story. My heart finds strength, though, in knowing that if God sees, hears, and answers those who have been disregarded, then I know He sees, cares, and answers me in my darkest hours and trials.
