Gò0dNews for Men

Becoming a Man of God n football, the Walter Payton Man of the Year award selects the person who does the most in their community and names them the “Man of the Year.” What exactly does it mean to be a man, though, especially a Christian man? The world defines manhood many different ways, but there’s more to being a man than just being a mature person who is not a woman. In looking at the Word, there are many men who stand out as examples for us. We can begin with the Patriarchs. Abraham was called the “father of many nations.” It was said of him that his faith was “counted as righteousness.” Abraham had such great faith that when God told him to sacrifice his son, he obeyed without question. However, Abraham lied about his wife and claimed that she was his sister while they were in Egypt. Then there was Isaac. He had a special anointing from God, but Isaac also lied and claimed that his wife was his sister, just like his father. Is that the model we’re looking for? What man would risk having his wife defiled by another man? How about Jacob? His offspring became the twelve tribes of Israel. Jacob was given the name “Israel” after wrestling with God for an entire night and refusing to relent until he received his blessing. But Jacob was known as a deceiver and cheated his own brother out of his birthright. Next, there’s David. David was called “a man after God’s own heart.” With one stone, he took down the mighty giant Goliath. David wrote many of the Psalms. The people sang about how David slew tens of thousands, and he won the hearts of many. But David lusted after someone else’s wife. He committed adultery and ended up killing a man as a result. How about Peter? Peter preached one of the greatest revivals of his time on the day of Pentecost and thousands were saved. He healed the sick. He walked on the water with Jesus. It was of Peter that Jesus said, “On this rock I will build my church.” But Peter was the one who denied Jesus three times when it came down to it. It was Peter who was rebuked by Paul for shying away from the Gentiles when the Jews came around. Surely not Peter! And how about Paul? Paul wrote most of the New Testament. It was Paul who said that “to live is Christ, and to

12 // March 2019

die is gain.” It was Paul who admonished the church to live according to the calling that God had given them. Paul was called to be an apostle by Jesus Himself. But it was also Paul who chased down and killed many of those who were chosen. Are any of these men an example of what we would want to model ourselves after to be men of God? If not them, then who? I say all of them. Proverbs 24:16 says, “For the righteous falls seven times and rises again.” 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” The fact is that

God knew our shortcomings and our failures before He even called us. What we see in any one of the characters above is that they were called by God to be men after Him. In spite of their flaws, they were men restored by God. Being a man of God doesn’t mean we live a perfect life, but we live a perfected life by what Christ has done for us. It means that staying down when you fall is NOT an option. It means that by whatever means necessary, we keep moving forward in our pursuit of God’s call in our lives. It also means that as we move forward, fulfilling that calling to be men of God, we are involved in the restoration of other men in their calling. Men of God, take your position! About The Author

don’t have to be courageous enough or strong enough. Not

what Jesus wants for us. He wants to be enough for us, and

ever. Unfortunately, allowing ourselves to not be strong is often harder than actually being strong. That’s because when we aren’t enough, we have to depend on God and others. There are many reasons why we would prefer to try to be strong enough on our own. Perhaps people have been unreliable, so we are unwilling to depend on them again. Frequently, we don’t think others (or God) will take care of things as well as we would. And often we want to be able to take the credit for getting it done. When we try to rely solely on ourselves, we are being prideful and are not submitting to God’s plan for his people. Her mind races endlessly, deciding names and making predictions of whether this tiny life growing inside her will be a pink or blue bundle of perfection. As for the father, it may take seeing the evidence of a pregnancy test or getting the results of the blood test to be fully convinced, or it may require hearing that pounding pitterpatter of the remarkable, resounding rapid heartbeat at the

first doctor’s appointment. At that moment, though, his heart grows larger to include another life to love. His mind instantly becomes overwhelmed with thoughts of how he alone will be able to provide for the needs of both his wife and child, so that he is not left feeling inadequate or unqualified for the monumental task ahead. Hopefully sooner than later, he will realize that with God, all things are possible, and that when He has called you to a greater calling, He will arm you with the wisdom and knowledge to complete the task ahead. The two will become three for the very first time, making a couple a family. Lives that were once focused on having their own needs met move swiftly to becoming the “need-meeters.” From the first cries to the later laughter and unforeseen screams, there will be a persistent prediction to the parents’ reactions. It will all be eventful: from that wonderful, wiggly, swaddled infant with eyes wide with wonder to those terrible,

20 // March 2019

terrific twos, full of mischief and stubbornness. Suddenly, without any warning, the dreaded teenaged years arrive, filled with uncertainty, worry, and paranoia at unmeasurable levels. Parents will remain on pins and needles as they await what is in store for this fragile life God has given them to protect, nurture, and guide. There will never be a day that will not be without incident, chaos, trials, and triumphs. Thankfully, those moments are surrounded by laughter and joy to soften the uncertainty that a child’s life sometimes brings. It’s often been said that children don’t come with instructions, but they do. In His Word, God has given us a wealth of information needed to raise the sons and daughters He has blessed us with to inspire, motivate, and encourage. Know that God never expects us to do anything without Him. He desires us to lean on, trust, and confide in Him for all things, knowing that all things will work out for our good and His glory. Realize that children are God’s greatest gifts He has bestowed to us as parents. Never take one moment for granted, being careful to give thanks to Him for each victory won and accepting His grace and mercy for every obstacle that is ahead. That will not only make the journey achievable but enjoyable, realizing early on that not all days will be good, but neither will they all be bad. Expect the unexpected. Search for the gold at the end of the rainbow, knowing it’s a long way from here to there. The adventures along the way are worth the hardships we will encounter along our path, and the lessons learned along the way create us to be the people we are meant to be. As parents, if we will mimic our Heavenly Father’s image to our own children, we will rest peacefully, knowing that we’ve done our best and that God is always there to fill in the gaps we may have inadvertently missed. Know that the road you are on may not be the one you choose but the one God knows is best, designed specifically to increase your weakness and accentuate your strengths. God knows our children before they were ever formed; from the beginning to the end, and in every moment in between, we know that “this one” is the one He created especially for us.

Neuropathy Causes: Yes, There is Help europathy is a progressive peripheral nerve disorder where your nerves actually wither away and die, much like tomatoes on a vine that’s been obstructed. The three most common causes are diabetes, post-spinal surgery and now, chemotherapy! That’s right; you go through the pain and suffering to battle and beat cancer, and you’re highly likely to suffer from neuropathy and start a new battle. The underlying cause is a chronic decrease in blood flow, nitrous oxide (NO2) and oxygen (O2) levels in the distal extremities, meaning your feet and, many times, also your hands.

Symptoms include all or some of the following: burning, tingling, weakness, pain, numbness, creepy-crawly feelings on your skin, loss of grip, foot drop, complete loss of positional sense (Proprioception), and sensation loss, like you have bubble wrap around your feet, even when barefoot. It progresses to balance issues and tripping, since you can’t sense the position of your feet. This can result in falls, causing fractures, dislocations and cuts/abrasions. People with neuropathy can’t sense these injuries, as they have little or no feeling. Left untreated, neuropathy can lead to ulcerations, gangrene infections and finally, amputation. There is no medical treatment for neuropathy: just gabapentin or Neurontin, pain pills and steroids like prednisone. All of these have side effects and none heal your neuropathy; they just numb some of the pain.

22 // March 2019

Fortunately, there is help. Since a lack of nitrous oxide and oxygen caused this horrible condition, it makes sense to increase blood flow, NO2 and O2 levels in neuropathy patients’ hands and feet while stimulating the decaying nerves to regenerate themselves, thus reversing the entire degenerative process. There is no drug that can do this. (Remember, chemotherapy causes the majority of neuropathy.) Research has shown that the best way to actually treat and reverse neuropathy is a multi-faceted approach that increases blood flow, NO2 and O2 levels and stimulates tissue regeneration. You cannot make new nerve cells, as we are born with all the nerves we will ever have. You have to rebuild and retrain the nerves to function again in order to reverse neuropathy. What’s the missing link? Cold laser therapy is pure energy that stimulates all tissue cells to heal. It stimulates the mitochondria (cell powerhouses) in cells to produce more energy that the cells can use to finally repair themselves. Class four “K-Laser” therapy is 20 watts of healing energy we use to stimulate nerve regeneration and reduce pain and all the symptoms of neuropathy. It is used on the feet, calves and lumbar spine to stimulate the origin and termination of nerves to repair. Also, class three cold laser is applied on the nerve pathways down the legs and arms. Vibration therapy is used to stimulate balance proprioception, and a soft-tissue foot and calf massage, along with gentle chiropractic care, align the feet and spine when needed. Additionally, we supply patients with a twice-a-day home care regimen with a nutrition program to increase blood flow to extremities. We also supply them with their own LED light therapy boot and ReBuilder nerve stimulatior, developed by the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, to stimulate regeneration at home and do everything possible to achieve a full recovery.

sowing of consistency that is required. The Bible tells us in Hebrews 12:11 that no discipline seems pleasant at the time, but it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it. As Christians, we try to apply self-discipline to many aspects of our lives and should apply it to our health as well. We use fasting to help us become closer to God. Fasting requires incredible discipline and a willingness to be uncomfortable for a period of time. If we can take that same spiritual discipline and apply it to making healthier food choices and getting out and exercising, we will see amazing results. Going to the grocery store to purchase healthy foods requires self-discipline. Going to the gym or going for a walk after a long tiring day at work requires self-discipline. But applying these principles constantly is what it takes to make the kind of lasting change that will leave everyone asking, “How did you do it?” The truth is, it is not going to be easy. You will constantly be fighting food temptation battles throughout the day. However, with each temptation you overcome, the next one becomes a little easier to defeat. It’s God’s promise, and you will see yourself change physically and spiritually

FEATURED COVER STORY

50 Years of Growth: Vassey’s Lawn & Garden Center

V

assey’s Lawn & Garden Center is celebrating 50 years of business in March 2019. The rich history of the company started with one man—Don Vassey. Don worked for Kern’s Bakery as a route salesman and spent early mornings stocking grocery store shelves with bread, but he found himself with a lot of time on his hands in the early afternoon hours. Waiting for his beloved bride, Shirleen, who worked as a bank teller, to get off work, the afternoons were most often met with idle time. Don’s entrepreneurial wheels starting turning and he decided to purchase a sharpening tool to sharpen the standard lawnmower blade. In March 1969, Don took a wooden stake, nailed a sign advertising “blade sharpening” to it, and placed it on the road frontage of “Route 60,” now known as Georgetown Road. His hope was to make extra money on the side, but what started as a part-time opportunity has now turned into a multi-generational business that continues thrive in the local economy.

28 // March 2019

Between 1969 and 1972, the business continued to evolve. People started coming and asking for other maintenance work to be performed, and Don was up to the task. In the fall of 1972, a conversation took place with his brother-in-law, Paul Davis. Don was convinced that there was room for growth, but with that growth came the challenge of keeping up with the increased business and Don came to the realization that it couldn’t be done by one man. Don and Paul became partners and decided to expand beyond the repair work and into retail sales soon after. The

partners worked to build a thriving business but decided to part ways in 1976. Don pushed all his chips into the center and dedicated his career to building his business. During the period of time between 1976 and 1984, the business saw unprecedented growth. Don acquired the rights to retail household brand names like Snapper, Ariens, Murray, and Tanaka. Quickly, Vassey Lawn & Garden Center became known as a place where quality repair work was given and quality products could be purchased. The business expanded into hardware, fertilizer, and grass seed. Eventually, the business also offered lawn and garden plants and other landscaping supplies. Increased business meant the need to increase his staff. Don continued to add service technicians and a salesperson. In 1984, after graduating college, Don’s son David came and join his dad’s business. David, along with his sister Donna, took an interest in the business from an early age, but Donna wasn’t quite ready to make it her career, at least not yet. Donna, upon completion of college, went on to pursue her passion by teaching music. She married in 1980 and spent the next several years starting her family, raising children, dabbling in real estate, and teaching piano part time. As Donna’s kids grew, she was able to jump in and take an active role in the business. In 1986, the business was presented with the option to retail the Wheel Horse brand, a brand that The Toro Company would purchase later in the same year. Toro became the catalyst for continued growth throughout the 1990s and into the present day. Strong brands, reliable service, and expert knowledge became the guiding principle that led to Vassey Lawn & Garden Center’s sustained success. In 1990, the business continued to grow and Shirleen could no longer do all the accounting for the business part time, so she retired early from banking and joined her husband and son in the business full time. In 1992, the business modernized its approach by adding SoftPower, a leading business management system. This allowed the business to keep track of key areas, such as inventory management, tracking customer maintenance, accounting, and most importantly, a point of sale system. Through the

years, the business not only invested in adding personnel, but also had to expand its physical space as well. Into and throughout the 2000s, the business added a large warehouse for storage, expanded its showroom and maintenance shop space, and ultimately honed what it does best: providing superior service and offering excellent brands. Today, the business in some ways resembles its early years. People often ask, “How do you stay small and sell

big?” It’s simple: years of experience. At Vassey Lawn & Garden Center, the mission is to offer the latest in parts and products at the best prices, with unparalleled service. The business’s pledge is to use its best efforts to serve its community. Those are essentially the guiding principles that Don established the business on and today, those guiding principles are still there. Though Don and his late wife Shirleen have turned the business over to their kids, Donna and David remain committed to their parents’ high moral and ethical character and continue to give God the glory for their success. Third-generation employee Brad Matson, Donna’s son, also embodies the same attributes. Brad has a strong desire to create that culture within all their employees. Only God knows what the next 50 years will look like for Vassey Lawn & Garden Center, but one thing is for sure—the business is on strong footing and poised for continued success.

What to Do When a Senior with Alzheimer’s is Hospitalized

A

by Shannon Alvey

planned or unexpected trip to the hospital is frightening and stressful at any age. The clinical environment can make it hard to rest. The pain and discomfort of the illness or injury, as well as

the uncertainty of what comes next, can be unsettling. For an older adult who has Alzheimer’s disease, a trip to the

hours of the day when loved ones can’t be present. • Make the room look familiar. Another tip is to make the hospital room look as much like home as possible. Bring the senior’s photos from home, their robe and slippers, and their favorite blanket or throw. • Comforting routine. Part of the challenge when a senior with

emergency room or a hospital stay can be even more difficult. The change in

stick with their normal structure, they are more likely to experience anxiety and agitation. Whenever possible, bring elements of their daily routine to the hospital. If they like to listen to music in the morning, for example, set up a playlist on your phone and use it in their room. Or, if afternoons are spent engaged in craft projects, find ways to keep them busy with simple projects between procedures and tests. • Non-verbal communication. Since adults with Alzheimer’s often lose their verbal communication skills fairly early in the disease process, looking for non-verbal signs of trouble is important. Pay special attention to facial expressions and body language that might signal they are in pain or experiencing discomfort.

If a senior you love has Alzheimer’s disease and they are scheduled to be admitted for surgery or another procedure, talk with your physician about your concerns ahead of time. They might be able to connect you with a hospital liaison who can arrange for a private room or a room in a quieter area of the hospital. Also, make sure you understand what to expect from the procedure and the recovery that follows. Specifically discuss: • Risks and potential complications • Expected recovery time and special needs • If and how the procedure might be impacted by your loved one’s disease The good news is that there are steps you can take to make a hospital stay less traumatic for a senior loved one who has Alzheimer’s disease or a similar form of dementia. The Alzheimer’s Association suggests: • One-on-one coverage. Having someone in your loved one’s hospital room around the clock is especially important. The unfamiliar environment might increase agitation and put the senior at risk for a fall or for wandering. It also helps keep everyone informed if a family member is in the room during times when the physicians visit and when medications are given. Some families have found it helpful to hire a paid caregiver to cover the

Plan Now for an Unscheduled Hospitalization While no one likes to expect the worst, planning for the unexpected is important when a senior has Alzheimer’s disease. One way to do this is by assembling an emergency bag you can quickly grab in the event of a surprise trip to the hospital. Your emergency kit should include: • Contact information for all physicians and health care providers involved in their care. • Medical history that denotes previous surgeries, health problems, and hospitalizations. • Their current medication list, including over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and supplements. • List of any known allergies and previous problems with medications. • Copies of advance directives, as well as insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid cards. • A note you can post at their bedside that explains their disease along with any notable concerns, like wandering behavior or falls. • A change of clothes and necessary personal hygiene products. Gò0dNews for Everyone

Maria’s Story efore we stepped through the door, I turned to our spunky little friend known as “Doc,” looked him straight in the eyes and said, “I feel like I’m about to give birth!” In his thick Bulgarian/English accent, he didn’t miss a beat and asked, “How long did the process take?” I answered, “Nine months!” The realization of what we had been praying and working so diligently for had finally arrived. “Doc,” as he was so affectionately called by all adoptive parents, was hired by “All God's Children International Adoption Agency.” He was a real doctor that helped the parents with all of the ins and outs. He was incredible, very knowledgeable and a gracious little spitfire of a man. Doc was a huge blessing to all who knew him. It’s been nineteen years this March that we walked into the orphanage in Stara Zagora, Bulgaria to meet our Maria and bring her home. Our hearts were racing and soaring. We were so nervous, yet excited at the same time. We were finally going to meet our daughter that God placed in our hearts. Nothing could prepare us for what was about to take place. She walked into the room and came right up with a smile that we will never forget. She called Kevin, Daddy and as soon as she saw him, jumped into his lap. “Born not from our flesh, but born in our hearts. You were longed for and wanted and loved from the start.” ~ Unknown Kevin and I both had doubts that Maria was “the one” at the beginning of the process. When the adoption agency sent us her packet and picture, we just weren’t sure. We told each other this before we went to bed one night. As we both tried to find sleep, it didn’t happen for either one of us. The next morning we both revealed to each other how the Lord spoke to us during our restlessness, letting us know that Maria was ours! I circled this verse in my bible the next day on 6/17/1999 with Maria’s name written out to the side...

36 // March 2019

“He has shown you, O man, (and woman) what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” Micah 6:8 (NIV). With her “Winnie the Pooh” backpack on, and goodbyes said, Maria, stood in the orphanage on our last day in Bulgaria and was ready to start her big adventure to America. While we faced many challenges after we arrived home, we knew that the Lord was with us every step of the way. An MRI revealed that Maria had a Traumatic Brain Injury with Cerebral Palsy. We knew that she was placed in the orphanage shortly after she was thrown from a flight of steps at age 4. We adopted her at 5 ½. I never dreamed that one day I would be the Mother of a Special Needs child, but God had a plan. And if God calls you to do something, you can be rest assured he will equip you every step of the way. Many times we wondered how we would take care of her, and every time God reminded us that he would never leave or forsake us on this journey. Today, Maria attends a community based program called “Fun With Friends” on Tuesdays for young adults with highfunctioning special needs, and goes to work with me on Fridays. Most nights, you can hear her talking and laughing on her phone. “She’s just taking care of business,” I tell Kevin, “You know, much like she does with us!” Once you meet our Maria, you’ll never forget her! I’m so thankful that before time began God had plans to adopt us. Just as Maria was placed in our hearts, we were also placed in God’s. “God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure” Ephesians 1:5 (NLT). About The Author

Aging is Harder for Women According to New Poll

poll of an estimated 2,000 individuals concluded that men are perceived as “old” five years later than women. Even more, men are considered attractive at an older age. This comes as no surprise to us as recent data confirms a suspicion we have had all along. According to a national poll released by Allure, the aging process is, well, sexist. Essentially, the visual effects of aging take a greater toll on females than males. For example, the poll found 30 years of age to be the prime aesthetic age for females, whereas 34 years was considered the aesthetic prime for males. While poll participants found gray hair an attractive feature on males— making them appear more “distinguished”— the participants found gray hair on females unflattering. "People overwhelmingly said they were concerned about the effects of aging. They were concerned about how it would affect their attractiveness to the opposite sex and particularly with women, how aging would affect their career,” explained the poll director, Kristin Perrotta. With the help of advances in cosmetic surgery, women no longer have to feel helplessly imprisoned by their age. Gray hair is easily changed by hair coloration. No matter what the concern— droopy eyes, jowls or fine lines, there is an effective treatment with new technologies. Even better, cosmetic procedures have become more affordable. With the availability of more non-surgical (more affordable) alternatives like Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, laser resurfacing and dermal injectable fillers, and financing programs specifically for cosmetic procedures, cosmetic surgery is no longer reserved for the rich and famous. In fact, 42 percent of the female poll participants admitted they would consider cosmetic surgery. The taboo is fading. On a more hopeful note, Perrotta expressed, “People did overwhelmingly have a much more positive view toward aging and toward themselves and their look as they grew older.” As a take-home message, embrace aging—

38 // March 2019

gracefully. Don’t fight it every step of the way. If not for the original sin and fall of Adam, we would have perfect bodies. Aging is part of our fall from Grace. It is no wonder that we want to fight the aging process to be more like the image of God. The most important thing to do before making the decision to undergo cosmetic surgery would be to consult God about the issue. The Bible tells us that God cares about every worry and concern that we have, so we should take

our problems to Him (1 Peter 5:7). Through the wisdom and guidance of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God, we have the ability to make decisions that will please and honor Him. “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised” (Proverbs 31:30). Even the most skilled surgeon cannot hold back the hands of time, and all cosmetic surgeries will eventually have the same result—aging. Aging is a part of life, but some age poorly and unjustly. In the right hands and for the right reasons, rejuvenation procedures can be pleasing and bring honor to God.

20 Times to Be Silent and Pray n January 2, 2019 Pat Robertson was prophesying on the 700 Club. He said 2019 is going to be a year of many bad times all around the world. If he is right, then it will be helpful to know when the Bible instructs us to be silent and pray. I found a list like this on Facebook and adapted it. 1. When we are angry. Proverbs 14:17 tells us that angry people “dealeth foolishly.” Have you ever said something foolish when you were angry? I know I have. Abraham Lincoln said, “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.” 2. When you don’t have all the facts. Proverbs 18:13 “Whoever answers before listening is both foolish and shameful.” 3. When you haven’t verified the story. Deuteronomy 17:6 makes the point to get everything clarified. 4. When your words will offend a weaker person. I Corinthians 8:9 & 11 Teaches us to be good examples for less knowledgeable believers. 5. When it is time to listen. Proverbs 13:1 “A mocker does not listen to rebuke.” 6. When you are tempted to make light of the holy. Ecclesiastes 5:2 Tells us not to be rash with our mouth before God. 7. When tempted to joke about sin. Proverbs 14:9 says “Fools make a mock at sin.” 8. When you will be ashamed of your words later. Proverbs 8:8 “Everything I have to say is just.” 9. When your words may give the wrong

40 // March 2019

impression. Proverbs 17:27 Teaches us to use simple speech that’s easily understood. 10. When the issue is none of your business. Proverbs 26:17 Says meddling, “Is like one that taketh a dog by the ears.” It sounds very painful. 11. When you are tempted to lie. Proverbs 4:24 “Put away from thee a wayward mouth.” 12. When your words will damage someone’s reputation. Proverbs 16:27 “A worthless person concocts evil gossip.” 13. When your words will damage a friendship. Proverbs16:28 “Anyone who gossips separates friends.” 14. When you are feeling critical. James 4:11 “Do not criticize each other.” 15. When you can’t say it calmly. Proverbs 15:1 “A gentle response diverts anger.” 16. When your words will be a bad reflection of God and your family. 1 Peter 2:21-23 teaches us that Jesus was our example and he always watched his words. 17. When you may have to eat those words. Proverbs 18:21 “Those who love to talk will eat what it produces.” 18. When you have said it before. Proverbs 19:13 No nagging and no, “I told you so.” 19. When tempted to flatter a wicked person. Proverbs 24:24 “He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous; him shall the people curse.” 20. When you are supposed to be working. Proverbs 14:23 “In hard work there is always profit, but too much chattering leads to poverty.” Clearly the Bible teaches there are times when it’s best to be silent and pray.

Good-Great God Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth” (Psalm 8:1). Debbie and I often talk weekly, if not daily, and our conversations are saturated by God’s Word. It’s always exciting to see what insights she will share with me. She’s a special sister-friend who encourages and challenges me to be all that God intended me to be. Our conversations can be described as mini-worship moments, and as the conversations come to a close, I am revived. During one of our recent worship talks, Debbie shared a praise report with me and I responded, “God is good!” I could almost hear her smile as she quickly replied, “No, Terrie, God is great!” We both laughed as we agreed that our God is good and our God is great. The more we began to acknowledge how good and great our God has been to us, the goodness and greatness of His love towards us, the good and great answers to our prayers, the good and great gifts He favors us with, and the good and great health, peace of mind, joy, and abundant life He has given us, the more this back-and-forth exchange continued. We both quietly paused and, with an almost simultaneous shout, agreed that our God is “good-great!” Now, when we talk about God during our worship talks and begin to share what He

has accomplished in our lives, we share knowing that at the end of each praise report, with lifted and united voices and sisterly love, we will say with confidence and joy that our God is good-great. Debbie and I acknowledge that God is: • Great • Omnipotent • Omniscient • Divine • Good • Real • Eternal • Almighty • The Way Today, look behind you, look at your present situation, and look with eyes of faith into the future God has promised you and you’ll join Debbie and me in loudly declaring that God is good-great! Challenge: List all the reasons you can testify that God is good-great.

Advancing in Battle very battle has more at stake than we realize. When the giant from Gath challenged King Saul's army, racial superiority and slavery were the victor's spoils. Goliath questioned Israel's courage and willingness to defend her Godly principles. To defy Israel's calling was to defy the God of that calling. For the devil to defy the church's destiny is to defy the God who established the church. But, God does not fight His battles by worldly methods. Goliath called for a man among Israel's army, but God sent a boy. David's battle with Goliath began years before he walked into the Valley of Elah. The lion and the bear were practice for the day David would face his giant. Neither the bear nor the lion were after the shepherd boy; they were after what David was responsible for. David's victory over the lion and the bear conditioned him for the coming conflict with Goliath. His past prepared him for his future. When David arrived at the battlefield, he found that the enemy had been taunting a generation of God's people for forty days. Upon hearing the giant's verbal onslaught, the bear basher and the lion eliminator threw fear to the rear and stepped forward into what would be the path to his destiny. David's purpose was to defend the honor of God, but God's purpose was to promote David. David heard the threats of the Philistine, but they were drowned out by the promises of God. Greater were rewards

54 // March 2019

than the risks of facing his enemy. By stepping forward, David turned opposition into opportunity despite the jealousy of his brothers or Saul's good-hearted interference. David knew that success depended on fighting the Philistine on God's terms. David encouraged himself by rehearsing his victories over the lion and the bear while he scavenged along the creek bed to find the five stones needed to dispense not only Goliath but his four brothers if necessary. David planned his strategy so that he would not have to fight the same battle over and over. After David's sling found its target and the Philistine fell face first into the dust of defeat, David used the giant's own weapon to silence him forever. Today's church faces a family of gigantic opposition, but modern-day Davids need to understand that every act of opposition is merely an opportunity to kingdom advancement. The church needs to stop cowering in the storm of her enemies' insults and threats and hear the heavenly thunder of God's voice. Is there a David among the church's ranks that will not only defy the enemy of God but the fear fostered by tradition? If so, he will need to shuck off history's armor, search out his own smooth stones of methodology, and defeat those that defy his God.
