Letter from the Editor

T

he month of June is filled with lifelong promises, hopes, and dreams! In the ’70s there was a trendy statement plastered on bumper stickers and lapel pins: “Try Jesus.” Even though the intention was good, the phrase sounded too commercial and noncommittal. I admit that there are biblical grounds for this statement in Psalm 34 where David says, “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good.” This could be interpreted as saying “try God . . . see that He is trustworthy.” But the trust David speaks about in Psalm 37 is not a “try-me-in-hard-times trust.” It is the kind of trust that has commitment woven into every fiber—like the yarn in a hand-knitted sweater. I have found that this kind of trust comes when we commit the full weight of our future—our very lives—into His hands. One day a friend and I happened to meet my husband, Bob, in his Jeep, on our way to lunch. We waved and continued our conversation. Then my friend said, “Wonder where he was going?” “I don’t know,” I said. “Probably to the auto parts store down the street.” “It doesn’t worry you that you don’t know?” she asked. “No! Why should it? I trust him.” In his Gospel, John describes a time in the ministry of Jesus when many walked away from Him . . . and a few vowed to stay with Him no matter what. “From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more. Then Jesus said to the twelve, ‘Do you also want to go away?’ But Simon Peter answered Him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. And we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God’” (John 6:66-69, NKJV). With all his faults and failures, Peter passed the course in trust. He never questioned the Lord’s command. He didn’t have “Plan B.” When Jesus came walking on the water, Peter said, “Lord, if it’s you . . . tell me to come to you on the water” (Matt. 14:28, NIV) and he stepped out of the boat! That’s trust. When you really trust, you hold on to God’s promises as though your life depends on them. And it does.

very semester in my college English classes, I like to begin class with one particular devotional which starts with me displaying a screen of realtime stock market quotations. The students typically watch with glazed eyes as the numbers on the screen change rapidly—Dow Jones Industrial Average, Nasdaq, S&P 500. Then I ask, “How many of you are stressed out or depressed by what you see?” Typically not one hand is raised. Then I ask, “How many of you are overjoyed by what you see on this screen?” Again, almost always not one hand is raised. Students don’t respond to stock market quotations because they aren’t invested; rarely, if ever, do any of my students have any money invested in the stock markets. Consequently, they simply don’t care if the market goes up or down at any given time. Then I make the application to the devotional: if you’re not invested—if you haven’t put your time and money into something, it typically doesn’t mean that much to you. Only what we spend our time, efforts, and money on represents accurately what we value, what we care about. If we’re invested in missions work by giving money to help missionaries around the globe, then we start caring about the reports we receive on how the Lord is using these missionaries to spread the Gospel of Christ.

10 // June 2017

Recently, I heard a podcast by a man named John Hope Bryant, author of the 2014 book, How the Poor can Save Capitalism. The title may sound counter-intuitive, but Bryant raises many valid points. Bryant is an African American entrepreneur who founded Operation HOPE, as well as donating money to countless other charitable causes. Bryant’s passion is helping others become financially literate, and one of his core beliefs is that someone’s credit score can provide invaluable information (and speculation) about that person. Low credit score communities, he says, are “where the rioting is” located. Conversely, those with high credit scores tend to be places with low unemployment and a strong sense of optimism about the future. Is there any magic about these results? No, but the answer is so obvious that one might overlook it. Those people who have a high credit score might typically live by a written monthly budget, live on less than they make, and invest for long-term growth and/or goals. You may be thinking, “That sounds great, but what about those who didn’t make these same choices and are now suffering the consequences? The good news is that it’s never too late to start making wise decisions like the ones mentioned above. Proverbs 21:20 – “[There is] treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man devours all he has.” Let’s invest our time and money for Christ’s kingdom.

Be Still by Cynthia Kirkpatrick

People are afraid to be still. Why? Because of Voices. Not crazy voices, just loud voices. Voices that caused past hurts. Voices that cause present loneliness. Voices causing fear of the future. But there is one voice that is clear— If you listen. It will heal hurts, Provide companionship, light your future. It is the voice of love and it says, “BE STILL AND KNOW THAT I AM GOD.” “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress” (Psalm 46:10-11 NIV).

decades of life, I have found that some of the best memories are made around the dinner table. I remember Sunday dinners at my grandparents’ house, with uncles, aunts, and cousins all gathered around a small table. Everyone is in each other’s way, but none of us would have changed a thing. Now that several of those family members have gone on, I treasure those memories. As my husband and I started a family eighteen years ago, I knew that I wanted to make those same memories. I know it is not the norm, but my busy family of four manages to make it to the dinner table together several times a week. About 6:15 every night my house begins to bulge with activity. My husband and son arrive home famished after a strenuous workout at Crossfit Anistemi; my daughter finishes off her shift at a local afterschool program, and I complete my trek from a wonderful but stressful job with an Employee Benefits firm in downtown Chattanooga. I am always looking for an easy but filling meal to get on the table quickly without ruining the boys’ workout. Now that the temperatures have begun to rise, I love recipes that do not require me to turn my oven on. My husband loves to grill, and grilled chicken has become a staple in our house. We try to think constantly of new marinades and side dishes to keep it interesting. One of our favorites is my Greek pasta salad. After eating a Greek salad at one of our favorite local restaurants, I was inspired to turn it

Created for Praise

Praising God in your private worship and devotion will fill you with overwhelming joy.

P

by Judi Marvin

raise is a beautiful expression of our love and adoration for a King who stepped down from heaven to live among His Creation. He is a holy, magnificent, majestic, loving king who created us not only for fellowship and worship, but also to give Him praise. What other god has ever loved His people so much that He would give up His throne, humble Himself, even to the point of an incredibly, violent death, in order to redeem and to save His own from the fires of an endless hell? But not just that, to save a people that would live eternally with Him in his kingdom. Answer? None. Not one. There is no other King but He. He is our Savior, our Redeemer; He is our all in all. How can we not give Him praise? I believe praise is a pouring out of ourselves. As we lift our hands and hearts before Him, the Holy Spirit who dwells within us lifts us up to meet our Lord. Our Spirit is joined together with His, and a sweet unity is formed. Perhaps not a "feeling" per se, but a warmth, an excitement, an indescribable interaction and yearning takes place. I dare say, it's almost like you're about to be raptured away! David, the sweet psalmist of Israel, spent his entire life in praise of his Lord. He even danced before the Lord. He rejoiced and danced like a child might do . . . unashamed . . . unreserved. He did not

50 // June 2017

care what others thought of him. He was worshiping his Father, his Lord and nothing else mattered. The result of his praise? It pleased the Lord. “Then David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was wearing a linen ephod. So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting and with the sound of the trumpet” (2 Sam. 6:14-15 NKJV). Many Christians today are concerned with what others may think, so much so that they refuse to lift their hands, clap their hands, or show any expression of praise during worship services. They are missing out on such an inexpressible joy and honor that results from abandoning our fears and reaching out to an awesome God who loves us and is honored by our praise to Him. He's the only One we should ever be concerned with. Imagine Him reaching down His hand and touching ours as we sing our heart's praise to Him? How wonderful is that? So if you cannot bring yourself to praise Him corporately (which you will do eventually in Heaven), then at least give Him the praise due to Him in your private worship and devotion times. Don't be afraid. He will fill you with such a joy that you will not want to stop! You will be so overwhelmed; you will even weep! So Praise Him! Praise Him! Praise Him! That's what you were created for. Judi Marvin Ministry Assistant East Athens Baptist Church Athens, Tennessee
