The Smartest Person in the Room MONEY MATTERS WITH DR. ANDREW LEE

Dr. Andrew Lee is professor of English at Lee University. He also serves as a coordinator for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. He and his wife Esmerelda have three children.

T

here’s a maxim I’ve heard repeated a lot lately on various financial podcasts where wealthy men and women share their secrets to success. Many of these highly successful people have said, “You never want to be the smartest person in the room.” In fact, some of them have stated the point even more emphatically: “If you look around and realize that you’re the smartest person in the room, get out of that room immediately!” So that got me thinking—what exactly does this mean? When we think of certain people as being “smart” due to their high academic achievement, what do we really mean? Although we often think of “smart” as referring to IQ or innate intelligence that one is just “born with,” that’s rarely the truth if we really think about it. More often than not, what we really mean is that these “smart” people are “diligent” and “disciplined” with their time and with their choices. One of these choices to “be smart” involves constant learning—acquiring more knowledge through continual reading and other education in order to expand how much we know. But it doesn’t stop there. To be really “smart,” it’s crucial to then make smart choices based on this knowledge we’ve acquired. In other words, our choices are how we prove that we’re really “smart,” and our choices determine whether others will think of us as being “smart.” As Forrest Gump reminds us, “Stupid is as stupid does,” and it’s equally true that “smart is as smart does.” We’re smart if we make smart choices. The Bible tells us in James 1:22—“Put the word into action.” Since this is a money column, what does it mean to be “smart” with money? And what would the “smartest

10 // January 2019

person in the room” look like in terms of being “money smart?” We think of certain people as “money smart” based primarily on two factors: (1) they know a lot about money and finances (knowledge) and then (2) they have achieved financial success by putting this knowledge into practice (investing, getting out of debt, budgeting expenses). Again, being “smart” with money means making wise choices with money, putting our financial knowledge into action. Knowledge and action are clearly different, and the latter is much harder than the former. We all “know” how to lose weight, but it’s a challenge to actually do it. We all “know” we should spend less money than we make so that we can avoid debt and invest for the future, but it’s a challenge to actually do it. Doing it (and not just knowing it) is what makes us truly “smart.” So, why do all these successful, wealthy people on the financial podcasts choose to leave the room when they discover they are the “smartest people in the room?” The answer is found in another maxim which these same successful people have found to be true, which is this: “We become the average of the five people we spend the most time with.” Think about that. If you are the most disciplined, most knowledgeable, and most diligent person in your “friend group,” how will you be able to continue to grow and learn from those around you? If your friends all enjoy “shopping therapy” on a weekly basis, how will you ever get out of debt? If your friends’ social time always involves eating out and spending money, how will you be able to invest for the future? If you’re the “money-smartest person” in your “room,” maybe it’s time to relocate.

Gò0dNews for Men Manliness, Purity, and Public Perception egardless of how you might feel about it, the past few years have not been kind for the image of men. From celebrity sex abuse scandals to accusations against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh to the emergence of the #metoo movement, society has been in the process of auditing the behavior of men. To ignore this audit can be dangerous. The implications are that men, as a gender, have been over-stepping lines of consent for decades or perhaps generations and further that they have used

positions of authority to demonize victims. These claims are obviously a strong indictment and it is understandable that the debate over the truth of these claims has caused division in our society. There are those who believe there is systemic abuse and oppression of women at the hands of men and there are those who feel men have become the true victims. But regardless of your position, there is a concern that we all should agree on. Whether justified or not, the image of manliness has taken a hit. Perception is reality.

12 // January 2019

This stigma has many men searching for an answer on how to safeguard their image and what to teach our sons as they grow. We can find hope in Psalm 119:1 which declares, “Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord! Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek Him with their whole heart, and do no wrong but walk in His ways!” (ESV). The passage continues declaring that blamelessness can be found in “fixing” one's eyes upon God's commandments and being steadfast in them. It states in verse 9, “How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word” (ESV). The reality for men is that the standard of “good” is now “purity” and for most of us, that is a hard pill to swallow. We know that we are imperfect and striving for such purity seems impossible but we can find our example in God the Father. His masculine purity demands boldness in truth (Acts 4:13), compassion (Psalm 86:15), and empathy for the fearful (Psalm 103:13). This seems unachievable and futile to try. But try we must. The biblical image of a man is one that brings peace and security to others. It is one that removes fear and doubt. We must battle to restore that image. Women should feel safe in the presence of men, not fearful of aggression. May the year of 2019 be the year that men of God behave in that loving image and more importantly, that the world sees them as such.

Gò0dNews for Women

Seed Bearer oman, you are the seed bearer. We are told in Genesis chapter 1, that God proclaimed that man and woman would have dominion over creation. We are told that God created the woman to fulfill a lack in man that no other creature could fill. Woman was the seed bearer for humanity. She contained the seeds of the destiny of the race. Man could not do what she was meant to do. Man prophetically gave woman the name Eve. Scripture says this name relates to her ability to be the life giver of mankind. The

Hebrew word for Eve (Chavvah) also comes from a root word that means to make known/declare/breath. Was this in reference to her speaking to the serpent or could it have a more spiritual undertone? Woman was made with better facility with words and the ability to be the bearer of seed. Scripture relates seed to words and more specifically to the Word of God. Woman, you are to bring forth spiritual life with the words you speak. Proverbs instructs women to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed. Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless and see that they get justice (Proverbs 31:8-9).

14 // January 2019

Eve was the one to bear the destiny of the race. In the process of giving birth, she understood the period of waiting from conception to birth. She knew the expectation of life while she waited and prepared for the child that would come from her physical body. The child in her belly was a reality in her mind. Women are uniquely made to understand the process of faith to bring forth what is desired. The writer of Hebrews tells us that “…this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living…our handle on what we can’t see. The act of faith is what distinguished our ancestors, set them above the crowd. By faith, we see the world called into existence by God’s word, what we see created by what we don’t see” (Hebrews 11:1-3). Faith seeds planted in the spirit, spoken by the mouth, with expectation of fulfillment brings forth what is desired. A promise moves from being a spiritual reality in the heart, to a physical reality. Time may pass during the process, but the fulfillment is assured because the Good Seed of the Word of God will produce what it was intended to produce. Jesus said to the disciples, “Have faith in God. I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen. But you must really believe it will happen and have no doubt in your heart. I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours” (Mark 11:22-24). Woman, speak forth God’s Word with the assurance that you were made to create life.

Gò0dNews for Parents

God’s Fire

oday’s Christian parents face an enormous challenge—passing on the fire. You know the fire of which I speak, the fire of God that burned up your sinful past, illuminates your present, and lights the way toward your future in Christ. You likely have many testimonies of God breaking into your life and changing everything, like a forest fire that completely alters a landscape in a matter of hours. There is one account in Scripture of a forest fire that changed the landscape of a man’s heart, the burning bush.

Although Moses bore no external burn marks following his fiery encounter with God, the landscape of his entire future was altered. As Dr. Rickie Moore, an Old Testament professor of mine would say, Moses was altered at the altar. Now Moses must take the fire that ignited his life and pass it on to an entire people. Although Moses’ doubt rings in his ears, God breaks through doubt’s deafening roar and speaks out of the embers: “So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt” (Exodus 3:10, NIV). Enkindled by the fire of God, Moses performs great wonders in Egypt and the people of Israel catch the flame. As they embark on the great exodus from Egypt,

20 // January 2019

not even the Red Sea could quench the flame of God. They have seen all that God can do, and they believe. But though a pillar of God’s fire continues with them and they see God’s fire at mount Sinai, all too quickly they lose faith in the faithfulness of their God. As time goes by, generations come and go until none remain who have seen the fire. Fortunately, God knows how to stoke the ashes to bring the flames roaring back to life. Deuteronomy teaches parents exactly what to do when their children ask, “What is the meaning of the stipulations, decrees and laws the Lord our God has commanded you?” (Deuteronomy 6:20). In other words, the children are asking why they should adopt the faith of their parents. God tells mothers and fathers to respond in this way, “We were slaves in Egypt . . . but he brought us out from there to bring us in and give us the land he promised on oath to our ancestors” (Deuteronomy 6:21-23). God commands parents to teach children their story, the story of what God has done. I would echo Deuteronomy’s instructions to parents today. To pass on the flame, you must pass on your story. Tell your children the great things God has done in your life. Tell them of the many times God has been faithful. Tell them how God has provided. Tell them how God has delivered. You only have one story to tell, your own, so tell it and watch to see how the same fire that altered the landscape of your life can burn brightly in the lives of your children. May we all catch God’s fire.

Gò0dNews for Health & Fitness

One Habit at a Time love new beginnings, don’t you? While I am not a fan of New Year’s resolutions, I do love the fresh feeling a new year brings. There are so many possibilities ahead of us in the new year it can sometimes seem daunting, especially when it comes to our health. Below, I am sharing two tips that are sometimes overlooked, but can make a significant impact on your fitness goals and, more importantly, change your lifestyle. Hydration is KEY! Our bodies are mostly water, yet many of us are in a constant state of dehydration. We fill up on sodas, sweet tea, coffee, and diet drinks, all of which actually dehydrate us. Being hydrated is a key

element to losing weight (and keeping it off), thinking clearly, sleeping better, and overall better performance. What to Do: Aim to drink at least 1/2 your bodyweight in ounces of water. If you weight 180lbs, you would want to drink at least 90 ounces of water each day. The easiest way to do this is to get a water bottle with ounce marks. If I have clients who are really struggling with getting their water intake in, I encourage them to set reminders throughout the day. Don’t Slack on Sleep! Studies show we need at least 7-9 hours of sleep each night to function optimally.

24 // January 2019

A lack of sleep can wreak havoc on your mind and body. In fact, poor sleep habits can prevent you from losing that weight you have been working so hard to lose and keep off. Not getting enough shut-eye at night can cause our body to produce less of the hormones our bodies make that tell our stomach it’s not empty. So, when you’re running on 4-5 hours of sleep you are likely to feel more “hungry” during the day and some studies even show it can affect your decision making habits (similar to being intoxicated!) when it comes to food. What to Do: Like any habit, you must be consistent. Start with going to bed 30 minutes earlier each day for a week, then increase to an hour the following week. Keep going until you reach 7-9 hours each night. This can take some dedication, but the results are worth it. Another factor to consider when putting your new sleep habits to work is how much screen time you are consuming before bed. Multiple studies show that using your phone before bed can be disastrous for your sleep. Be proactive about setting a time each night to turn your phone off or put in another room and stick to it. Setting health goals don’t have to be daunting, starting small leads to greater results. Take these tips and start implementing them into your current routine. One of my favorite Bible verses is 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 which says, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” We have been so amazingly blessed to be given a precious body by our Creator. Be kind to your body and to your soul by treating your earthly home well. Remember, we only get to live this sweet life once - make it your best!

Great gym to get it done. And not all hype like the other 24h gyms. Has what I need and love the monthly no contract price. I don’t feel bad if I missed a few weeks. Unlike my other overpriced gym. Staff is friendly and helps me if I notice anything that needs attention. Like a family gym where your suggestions matter. — P. Shevchuk I think this place is great. Plenty of equipment and everything is clean. I am scared when the secret gets out about this place because right now I have not observed it to be busy at all. I use this gym on the weekend and then go to another gym closer to my house during the week so I don’t see a lot of staff. The staff I have come in contact with have been really nice and helpful. Their trainers seem to be knowledgeable and they have a large variety of classes. Not that I would ever workout at 3 AM but it is nice to know I have the option so I also appreciate the 24/7 access. Keep up the great work. — Matt C.

Gò0dNews for Teens Take Advantage of Your Teenage Years ased off of the title, you may be thinking this is just another article written by someone sharing their personal experiences of being a teenager and warning other teens not to waste their teenage years like they did. This is not one of those articles. This is written by someone who took advantage of their teenage years and did not fit in because of it. If you are a teen reading this and feel lonely because this describes you, I hope you find encouragement in these words and remember not to give up. Our culture constantly tells young people that since they are young, they should just party it up while they can. Whenever we see a young person in the news for doing something against common sense, our response is often, “Oh, they’re just kids.” I believe teens are capable of so much more than what our culture says they are. A lot of my teenage years were lonely because I did not spend time going to the parties, trying to be in the popular crowd, or trying to be involved with the latest gossip or trends. Now that I am in my mid-twenties I see how my actions as a teenager set me up for what I am doing now. Your teenage years are the launch-pad for your twenties. I spent my time working hard in my studies, developing my communication skills, and spending time with God. Those habits have carried over with me. As I have watched my generation grow older, I see that many of those who wasted their time in their teens are wasting their time in their twenties and will continue to do so for the rest of their lives if there is no change. Witnessing this fueled me to put together a saying for my kids ministry at the church where I am a children’s pastor. The kids and I often say together, “We are running towards the hard things because the hard

26 // January 2019

things build character and God is with us.” Use your teens to run towards the hard things. What are some of those hard things? First, place your identity in God alone and not in other people or what you have. If you choose the latter, the result will be insecurity. Second, wrestle with your fears and face them dead on. This will build in you a habit of building

character and doing what most are unwilling to do. Finally, surround yourself with people who are focused on what really matters. If you are around people who want to make a difference in the world, it is going to encourage you to take advantage of the little time we have on this earth. Listen to the words of Solomon, “Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near of which you say, ‘I have no pleasure in them” (Ecclesiastes 12:1).

FEATURED COVER STORY

United Christian Academy

S

ince 2003, United Christian Academy—an accredited, nondenominational Christian school in Cleveland, Tennessee—has been equipping the next generation through the power of education. It was established as part of the vision set forth by Reverend H. Richard Hall, founder of the United Christian Church and Ministerial Association. We offer students Pre-K3 through eighth grade an exceptional educational experience. At UCA, the staff and teachers are devoted to pinpointing and cultivating each student’s unique, God-given talents and abilities. Our purpose is to foster a safe and encouraging environment—an atmosphere that enhances the holistic growth of students: intellectual, physical, artistic, and spiritual.

OUR MISSION

In partnership with parents, we are dedicated to providing our students with a strong academic foundation that recognizes and meets the individual learning style of

28 // January 2019

each child. We pledge our genuine support to our students and their families. UCA’s goal is to develop students’ potential so that they can become responsible citizens who set standards for excellence in our society.

ACADEMICS

Accredited by the Tennessee Association of NonPublic Academic Schools (TANAS), United Christian Academy offers preschool through eighth grade (ninth grade in fall 2019) an accelerated, faith-based Abeka curriculum—the foremost textbook publisher for Christian schools, offering students “excellence in education from a Christian perspective” for more than forty years. Our teachers are Tennessee state-certified, well-equipped instructors who care about our students’ academic success.

PHILOSOPHY OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION We see the big picture. UCA gives our students a valuable education not only for its immediate, practical

goals, but also for the ultimate goal of furthering the gospel’s cause. Once students have a quality education, they need to know what to do with it. That’s why the Bible is not just a specific subject taught at our school; it is the general foundation that guides our students’ learning. Our curriculum integrates daily Bible lessons, Scripture memorization, and a prayer and devotional time in the classroom. UCA holds weekly chapel services, featuring special guest speakers and pastors from the local community. We want our students to realize the value of the Word of God and to allow its principles to guide their everyday lives.

FINE ARTS PROGRAM

United Christian Academy places a strong emphasis on the fine arts. With a variety of fine arts programs to choose from, students can discover and develop their skills as they learn about music, art, and dance from experienced teachers who excel in their respective fields. We love to see our students’ creativity manifest through a variety of avenues: concert, rhythmic, and worship bands; chorale music and an award-winning dance team; music appreciation classes and a comprehensive art program, which includes instruction in media production and graphic design. Besides these in-school courses, our multitalented staff allows us to offer students private music lessons, both vocal and instrumental. UCA’s students have the opportunity to learn a variety of instruments—from basics like piano, guitar, drums, and bass to the woodwind and brass instruments—as well as the mandolin, violin, and cello. This wide range of possibilities is available for students to explore.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

At United Christian Academy we believe that leadership is service—putting others’ interests before our own. We think one of our main jobs as educators is to empower our student leaders and to provide them with resources and outlets through which to serve. UCA has established a National Elementary and Junior Honor Society chapter, as well as a Student Council, both of which present opportunities for UCA students to serve. We participate in service through Samaritan’s Purse and The Caring Place, also performing at various nursing homes in Cleveland. Other projects include distributing Thanksgiving baskets to families in need in the community, making Christmas memorable by donating

gifts for local children, writing letters to Vets, and various other efforts.

ATHLETICS/EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

In order to cater to our students’ varied interests, UCA offers a wide selection of opportunities for extracurricular involvement, activities ranging from basketball to Girl Scouts. Our athletic department has made great strides recently including signing a promotional partnership with Adidas brand, and we have high hopes for its future growth. We currently have elementary and middle school basketball teams for both boys and girls, a boys and girls middle school track and crosscountry team, and girls middle school volleyball. We are looking to add a soccer team this upcoming year. UCA also offers the opportunity for home school students to participate on our teams for a small fee. Additionally, girls can join our award-winning dance team, which performs at various venues as well as at all school programs.

PRESCHOOL

United Christian Academy’s preschool is a distinct unit of the school, providing nurturing care and educational foundations for children thirty-two months up to five years old, in preparation for kindergarten. UCA’s preschool is not just a babysitting business; our preschoolers learn to read and write at foundational levels and do basic math functions before reaching the K5 classroom. These youngsters can approach kindergarten with confidence, and parents can rest assured that their children have been prepared for the elementary journey ahead of them.

Tim’s Strategy

e sober, be vigilant, because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8, KJV). It was time for my scheduled pest-control service so I left work early to meet Tim, my pest-control technician at the appointed time. As I drove up the driveway, I could see that Tim had begun treating the outside areas of the house. When I gathered my belongings and

headed towards the backdoor, Tim and I immediately began talking! I paused in time to go inside and collect the keys to the buildings outside he needed to treat and we continued catching up with how things were going since the last appointment. From children, work, dating and our spiritual lives, we seemed to cover it all! When we entered the house our conversation continued and out of sheer curiosity, I asked Tim about his work as a technician and how he got started in this type of work. He smiled and began sharing incredibly interesting and unbelievable stories. He’d encountered extreme cases that made me thankful for my social work cases! Smiling, Tim told me that when he first started in the pest-control business, to be successful, he asked

30 // January 2019

for the tough cases, the ones not just with roaches, “I wanted houses with rats! I figured if I could get rid of rats, I could get rid of anything. I would go to homes and as I checked out the situation, I would observe how the people lived, where they ate, where they put their trash, was the house clean; this told me a lot about the problem. I could come in and use all the treatments I had, but if they didn’t change the way they lived, they would still have a problem. Nothing would change.” While Tim’s strategy has a motive and purpose for good, I began thinking about our enemy who has a strategy with a motive for our eternal destruction. He specifically selects us and comes into our homes, watches how we live, what we eat and how we treat the trash of this world. He identifies our weaknesses but unlike Tim, he uses it against us, not to help us but sprays his treatment of sinful attacks into our environment to destroy us. The challenge for us is to have a daily appointment with our Spiritual Technician, whose strategy of love is to save us from the enemy’s attacks. He comes into our homes, encourages us to eat well, live clean lives, and offers us eternal life with Him. Our Spiritual Technician, like Tim, chooses the hard cases and gave His live in order to treat the problem of sin with the powerful treatment of his shed blood! Hallelujah, what a Technician! Hallelujah what a Savior! Look at your life. Are there “pests” that you need to get rid of? My recommendation is that you follow the instruction of the Greatest Technician ever, Jesus Christ. With Him, your life will be pest free.

Gò0dNews for Couples

The Same Mindset …make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, having the same mindset as Christ Jesus...” (Philippians 2:2-5, NIV) Young couples occasionally (not often enough) ask what the secret is to a long, happy marriage. Not that I think we’re an “old” married couple, of course, but we have been married almost 34 years, and chances are good that we’ll see this thing through. It's not just finishing each other’s sentences. It’s not knowing all the funny lines from all our favorite movies, and working them into random conversations, leaving outsiders to just look at us weirdly. Or she knowing that I’m going to tell that joke again and laughing without rolling her eyes. No, it’s a lot more than that, although that part is good, too. Yes, we simultaneously spout punchlines from Clue and Oscar and Airplane! (Don’t judge us. And don’t call us Shirley!), but the strength of our marriage isn’t founded on shared movies or memories. We have a shared mindset: about each other, our marriage, and the role of Christ in our lives and futures. That’s our Super Glue. And it plays out in how we see and treat each other. These passages on the topic of mindset from Philippians 2 make a good guide for Christian living, and as such, they have great relevance to Christian marriage. “If you have this love that comes from being His…then be like-minded. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit…because you are not alone. In humility, value others above yourselves…” specifically, start with that woman or man He gave you.

32 // January 2019

In your relationships, and marriage is the first human relationship, have that mindset. And don’t consider being right to be more important than preserving that balance. Take the very nature of a servant; yes, a humble servant, placing your own needs aside, and placing his or her needs above your own. A servant relationship of humility and service isn’t demeaning to the giver; rather, it is a blessing to both the beloved and the lover. I am no weaker of a man if I concede my desires to hers; instead, the united “we”

gets stronger. When one member of the union is weak, and the other stoops down to help, both rise as one, and the bond gets stronger. That strengthening can’t begin by saying, “Well, if he/she would just give me what I want, I will give them what they need.” It takes two people determining to love each other with the same passion that led Him to the cross. Framed by such selfless devotion, the journey together becomes a joy, not a burdensome task.

Becoming a Child of God Spiritually

O

by Mike Shreve

rdinary humans, focused on earthly things, are called the “children of this world” in Jesus’s teaching (Luke 16:8, 20:34, KJV). Born after the natural process of human reproduction, they live within the confines of sense-consciousness. Since we all share this beginning point, we are part of the same human family, regardless of race, color, culture, or creed. The Bible tears down separating walls, declaring God “has made from one blood every nation” (Acts 17:26).

Explaining this, the Messiah insisted, “Unless one is born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God” (John 3:5). Being “born of the water” is a reference to the ‘breaking of the water’ during the natural birth process. The amniotic sac tears and the fluid spills out as the child exits the womb. This is a necessary step in our spiritual development; however, a second birth must follow to inherit eternal life. Jesus insisted, “You must be born again” (John 3:7).

How wonderfully Jesus expressed God’s fatherly care for all people! His listeners were not yet

Before going to the cross, He interceded, “O righteous Father! The world has not known You, but I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me. And I have declared to them Your name . . . that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them" (John 17:25-26). Three important attitudes open the door to this internal transformation: • Repentance—2 Corinthians 6:17-18 urges, “Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you. I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters.” • Faith—Ephesians 3:17 declares Christ will “dwell in your hearts through faith.”

If Jesus referred to God as their “Father,” simultaneously, He was implying they were “His children.” Therefore, on a foundational level, all human beings are “children of God after the creation.” As Paul taught, we are “His offspring” (Acts 17:28). The Creator loves all people so deeply that He “gave His only begotten Son” to purchase their salvation (John 3:16). He did this to lift those who respond to an eternal level of sonship available only through spiritual rebirth.

40 // January 2019

• Love for God—John 1:12 (KJV) announces, “As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name.” If everyone born into this world was automatically an eternal child of God, these three promises, with their attached conditions, would have never been voiced. When these three qualifying factors occur, God sends forth “the Spirit of His Son” into our hearts “crying out, ‘Abba, Father!’” (Galations 4:6) At that moment, supernaturally, we become God’s everlasting offspring and join “the whole family in heaven and in earth” (Ephesians 3:15).

“regenerated,” an experience only available after Jesus’s ascension (Titus 3:5). They were just simple people concerned about life’s necessities. The Nazarene calmed their hearts, asserting: “Your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things” (Matthew 6:32).

love baseball and hot dogs and I drive a Chevrolet Trail Blazer but apple pie was never on my preferred list; I never ate it and, although I am an avid baker of cakes, pies and cookies, this was a particular pie I had never made. Until my name changed to Nana! Those of you who are in this select group of blessed women know that our desire to meet every request and/or demand of a grandchild is pretty much paramount to requests from any other source. One day (just out of the blue) my first-born granddaughter suggested that I make her an apple pie. Of course, since her wish was my command, off to the store I went to purchase apples. I didn’t ponder if I could make an apple pie because all that I was compelled to do was grant the wish of someone I loved and who loved me. This memory reminds me that when I first met Jesus, my name changed to Redeemed. How much greater, then, should be my desire to do whatever He asks of me? I am sure that most of us become complacent in our service to Him sometimes. Going to church, giving to the Kingdom work, living a life that we want to be pleasing in His sight, each of these things come pretty naturally to us in our Christian walk. But how willing are we to do more, something we have never done before or something that is not common to our daily service expectations of ourselves? If the Spirit tugs at our hearts to walk up to a total stranger and declare that Jesus loves him and wants to become the Redeemer of his soul, do we just do it or do we ponder on it. If we feel an urge to double our Sunday morning offering, do we stop and think or do we just do it because we are being asked by someone we love and who loves us, someone who died for us! I baked the pie out of a heart of love and I want to always do what I feel my Redeemer is asking of me with a love that is greater than any love we will ever know. “That I may come unto you with joy by the will of God, and may with you be refreshed” (Romans 15:32).

Sherry Cannon West is a lifelong resident of Cleveland, TN and is the campus post office manager at Lee University. She is blessed with two adult children, their spouses and is Nana to 5 wonderful grandchildren. She is blessed and highly favored, blood-bought daughter of the King of Glory.

A Battle Worth Fighting

W

by Melissa Clayton

hether you are a single mom or dad, the battle is real. Scripture says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). How do you do this when you are hit daily with the thoughts of “Why do I have to do this alone? I'm not sure what to do? The pain of being left alone to raise my children is too much.” Raising a child in the world today is more difficult due to life being so hectic. Technology has transformed life itself to a very “it’s all about me” atmosphere where

multitasking. The most popular reference indicating the role of a woman is Proverbs 31. But how do we carry out both roles to our children as examples when there is only one person to do all things? Is it impossible to give and teach them what they need, to be sons and daughters of the Most High? Recently, my youngest son told me that his new favorite verse is Proverbs 4:7 which says, “The beginning of wisdom is this: get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.” What a great foundation for establishing your parental goals. What a comfort to know that at the end of the day the one you turn to is the ultimate comfort. He says, “Don’t be afraid. For God did not give us a the spirit of fear, but of love, power, and a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7). He wants to help. “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6). He said He will not leave us. “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9).

Balancing life is a must, but when you are trying to play both roles in the family, life can be overwhelming. The father is to be the main provider, spiritual leader, and disciplinarian. Scripture says, “Fathers, bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4). The mother is to be loving, nurturing, supportive, and

He provides protection. “You have given me the shield of your salvation, and your right hand supports me, and your gentleness makes me great. You have given a wide place for my steps under me, and my feet do not slip” (Psalm 18:35-36). He gives confidence. “Have I not commended you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9).

electronics are more of a focus. It doesn't teach our kids how to be respectful, polite, and caring towards others. That is the parent’s responsibility. But who has time to spend with their kids when you have to work to pay the bills? Most people have jobs that don't allow you to get off at decent hours. Often we work harder because we have to pay others to care for our kids hoping we make ends meet. A lot of times the kid’s activities are neglected because we must work longer to pay the extra cost of those activities or we just simply can't get them where they need to be because there is no one to help.

He is my counselor. “I will praise the Lord who counsels me-even at night my conscience instructs me. I keep the Lord in mind always. Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken” (Psalm 16 7:8). “I will instruct you. I will teach you the way that you should go. I will advise you as my eyes watch over you” (Psalm 32:8).

Foot of the Cross nd when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me” (Mark 8:34). I have always wondered how “I” could obey this command? My approach tends to be performancebased. That means my efforts are the way to obey. But then, I read that my efforts are filthy rags. For example Isaiah 64:6 says, “But we are all as an unclean thing, and

all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags, and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” Why? Because they are my efforts. I know that a theme throughout the Bible is that we are to obey God’s Word. Abraham did this (Genesis 12 and 15). Moses did this. And God wants us to keep the law and His commandments. It says in John 14:15, “If you love me, you will obey my commandments.” Ouch! “If you love me…” There is no possible way that I can keep the law or obey a command like this; “Take up your cross” or even; “Follow Me;” I fail every time. Let’s define “law” a bit. There were two types of law in the Bible. God’s law, and man-made rules to follow God’s law. Exodus 20 for example. The “moral” law,

46 // January 2019

as some call it, will never go away (Matthew 5:18). The Holy Spirit was given to us for the power to keep them. Another law in scripture is Rabbinic law. Paul called these “traditions of the fathers” (Galatians). These are the rules that man created so the people did not disobey the law and get Israel in trouble with God. The religious leaders were the police, judge, and jury of the “laws” they made up. Paul says all Scripture is God breathed and can teach us much. Christ said not one letter will be removed. So, the conflict is between God’s Words and what we are taught from the pulpit, denomination, or latest book on “how to” by men. But what we have learned is that scripture wants me to be dependent on Him. Do I let go of me (impossible) and let go of my efforts? I was always trying to create a list of “disciplines” that I think may please God, so I can get a “pat” on the head and maybe have a good life. Perhaps I can’t even take up my cross daily? Here is what I can do though. I can drop at the foot of the cross at every command I find in scripture and ask Him to change me so that I can obey. Then He gets the glory because my efforts are rooted in His changes in me! He gave us the Holy Spirit to provide change. Not my efforts, but His change in me. Isn’t that the grace of God? The power that saves us and then teaches us away from sin? Titus 2:11-12 says, “For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age.” Can we then say that we don’t understand grace if we are living in sin? Scripture seems to think so. Only with His power can we change. Going to the foot of the cross looks like our only hope.

This is where I want to spend most of my focus because I think this is one of the most important concepts of the book. I believe Christians are afraid of their neighbors. The beginning of the book talks about losing control of the way things have been and power shifting. We are afraid to get to know our neighbor because we are afraid of losing power, and I believe our neighbors feel the same way. Here’s my solution in how to respond to all this outrage. Do not see your neighbors as an enemy but learn with them. Hear their story, listen to their fears, and learn to accept. Do not listen with open ears and a closed heart because that will leave you bitter. I also think that we have to develop programs to help our neighbors. I think when we listen to our neighbors, we will learn that they want to be accepted in this

School after the Holidays

e all love those days when we stay home from school to celebrate holidays. Especially at the end of the year, we load up on ham, turkey, and pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving. Then we struggle through the next few weeks running into Christmas, ready to enjoy the gifts we receive from family and friends. We love holidays, but we never seem to be ready to return to school. This year, follow these simple steps and ease your children back into the groove for school:

• A few days before school starts, put your child back on a school-type schedule. Instead of staying up late and sleeping late, put your child back on track with the timing of the school day. Send them to bed at a normal time for a school night. Awaken them near the regular time for a school morning. Getting them back into the school sleeping routine will help them adjust better to school once they are back in the classroom.

52 // January 2019

• Give your child a book to read over the holidays. Make it a book they have an interest in reading, one that follows a movie theme, a book they loved as a child, one they can read with you or a book with a positive theme for discussion. They can read a Bible story or an inspirational story. Reading something they can discuss with you helps them get back into the swing of reading and comprehending the story. • Plan a time to exercise with your child. There is a lot of sitting around during the holidays. The lack of exercise can make children lethargic and it can diminish their energy. Finding a consistent time to exercise during the holiday can keep your child active and it can provide some good, quality time for you to spend with your child. Exercise and talk with your child to keep them healthy in spirit, mind, and body. • Ask your child to write a letter to a friend thanking them for being a good friend. Have them write a letter to their family members expressing their love. Let them write a letter of appreciation to their teacher, pastor, a coach, or someone who has been influential in their life. This exercise will allow them to get back into the habit or writing. • Take them shopping or out to eat and ask them to break down the receipt to see if the charges are correct. Ask them to figure the taxes or ask them to pick out the prices for each item purchased. This exercise will help them focus on numbers and warm up for the math class coming in a few days. It does not take much, but every little bit of thought and work helps students prepare to be back in school and to be engaged in the learning process. Over the holidays, have fun with your children; at the same time, help put them back in the groove for school!
