Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 says, “Two are better than one, for if they fall, one will lift up the other.” If you see someone in need, hurt, or anything else important, I encourage you to the best of your ability to help them. Be a friend and help them; that’s it. No matter how they look, smell, or how many friends they have, help them. Don’t tell your friends or social media. Go to your school and tell your principal, school counselor, or a trusted adult. Lastly, talk to your parents or someone who takes care of you. Most kids don’t talk to their parents about bullying, abuse, violence, etc. because they think that their parents will exaggerate or punish them for not telling them ahead of time. Remember, your parents were children once and may or may not have gone through the same thing. All in all, being alone and not having anyone to talk to is hard, but the Lord will always be with you. You can pray and read the Bible to help you get through rough situations. Find Bible verses to make you feel more comfortable with Him. The Lord loves you and wants you to be with Him forever in Heaven. Make good choices for Him, and He will bless you

Found Money MONEY MATTERS

WITH DR. ANDREW LEE Dr. Andrew Lee is professor of English at Lee University. He also serves as a coordinator for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University. He and his wife Esmerelda have three children.

M

any of us have experienced the joy of “found money”—whether it’s a few silver coins we discovered in the couch cushions, or paper money tucked into the pocket of our blue jeans. We always look at this lucky twist of fate as “free money.” And what is the likely result of our unexpected financial “windfall?” We spend it as quickly as possible, usually on something that brings instant gratification. In fact, “found money” is least likely to be saved, much less invested. Why is that? Because we didn’t work for this money, or earn it, so it “costs” us nothing—at least that’s what we tell ourselves to rationalize our impulsive choice to spend the money quickly. Quick quiz: when was the last time you received cash or a check in a birthday card or as a Christmas present? What did you do with the money? Can you put your hands on it now? Luckily, these are rhetorical questions. We already know the answer, and it’s very likely “no.” The money was a gift, so it was (in your mind) meant to be “spent” on something that made you feel good. After all, you told yourself, that’s what “they” would want, and that’s why they gifted you the money—to enjoy yourself. So you spent the money at the first opportunity. After all, you wouldn’t want to disappoint the giver, would you? Recently, I had the opportunity to test my own resolve regarding “found money.” My father came over to my house and said he had a surprise for me which he found in an old box in his attic. It was $400 worth of U.S. savings bonds which I had won in an essay contest in 1986 when

10 // February 2020

I was 17 years old. (I’ve always loved writing. Go figure). I was elated. This was “found money” for sure. I took the savings bonds to the bank and learned they were now worth $922 with all the interest over thirty-three years. Sounds great, right? That is, until you realize that the interest on these savings bonds was a little over two percent per year. In other words, they just kept up with inflation. Instead, imagine if that $400 had been invested in a broad stock market index fund earning on average 9%-11% per year. During that time period, $400 could have turned into $7,000 or $13,000. So what looks like a “lucky” instance of “found money” is less attractive when you consider that $922 of my compounded interest could have easily been $7,000-$13,000 instead if I’d invested it in a stock index mutual fund. And let’s get even crazier. What if I had put that $400 in savings bonds into a brand new company which went public in 1986 and began selling shares on the stock market? The company was called Microsoft, and today that $400 from my essay contest prize would be worth about $700,000. Considering my essay was about one thousand words, that’s seven hundred dollars per word! Not bad for a seventeenyear-old who took about thirty minutes to write the essay. We can’t go back and change the past. But we can start now. So I took that $922 from the bank last month and immediately invested it into a broad stock market index fund for my daughter’s wedding. She’s ten years old. By her wedding day, that money should be worth at least several thousand dollars—a gift from my seventeen-year-old self to a daughter I never knew I’d have one day. How cool is that?

“Love wins” is a popular mantra in our Christian culture today. The premise of the quote is that love conquers all and that God’s love, and our love, is so far-reaching that nothing can separate us from it. This is based in Romans 8:35-39: “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, ‘For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.’ No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. May I Take Your Order? here you have envy and strife (self-ambition), there you will find disorder and every evil practice” (James 3:16). God cares about pantyhose. I know because he taught me a significant, lifelong lesson with them. I just knew I had a pair in my closet but couldn’t lay my hands on them. So I picked up a pair at the store and brought them home with the rest of my purchases. Later that afternoon, I found an economy-size pack with several pairs in my closet. I was terribly embarrassed over that! I had spent extra time and money on something I truly didn’t need. And then the Lord spoke very gently and quite firmly, “Get your things in order and shut the door on disorder.” I knew in my heart that He was about to teach me something beyond the pantyhose. He led me to the verse listed above in James. It became a “journey verse.” It spoke to my situation immediately. It continued to speak in the months following. Just like the pantyhose purchase, my disorder caused me to duplicate efforts and tie up money on stuff I already had while tying up closet space with too much unidentified stuff. all come together for something greater and something beautiful. With just a brief inventory, any one could tell that my life was somewhat out of harmony. There were more than enough pairs of pantyhose to prove it! Are you feeling a little disorderly lately? Have our rests switched places with your melody notes? Are you striking notes off-key? There’s hope to be

found when God brings order back into our lives. Wait! Can you hear that? He’s tapping His baton, calling us to order. Look to Him as the conductor of your life. He can orchestrate your life into something with harmony!

Gò0dNews for Parents

Simply Put alfway through the year, there are new changes in the world of kindergarten. It amazes me because there’s a little bit of maturity emerging with those little folks. I’ve witnessed this going on for 16 years, and it never gets old. Mind you, they are not all mature, but I’d say 98% (give or take a few) show reflections of the hard work and teaching that is poured into them from the beginning of the school year. Kindergartners are so much fun to be with. I absolutely love my job. What other job is there where you get to share tons of hugs and giggles every day? The simple, childlike faith in everything they do is a lesson for us all. Even their happiness stems from simplicity. There is truth in the quote that follows: “If the simple things in life don’t put a smile on your face, then you will never be truly happy.” It’s not rocket science; it’s called being simple. Simple in how you do things. Simple things you say. Simply smile. Simply hug. Simply share. Simply love. It’s intentionally being simple in everything. We make our lives so complicated at times that we have no idea what’s going on. We are what I like to call, “A lost dog in high weeds!” You remember “Forrest Gump.” And even though he is a fictitious character, he has some simple words to live by. This is probably his most famous yet simple line from the movie:

20 // February 2020

“Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” –Forrest Gump But do you remember this line also? “Momma always said you can tell a lot about a person by their shoes, where they’re going, where they’ve been.” —Forrest Gump These simple words are so true. Sometimes, the shoes that walk through our kindergarten classes have seen better days. If shoes could talk, I’m sure they would simply say, “This child needs a little extra love!” When the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who gets the highest rank in God’s kingdom?” here is His answer: “I’m telling you once and for all, that unless you return to square one and start over like children, you're not even going to get a look at the kingdom, let alone get in. Whoever becomes simple and elemental again, like a child, will rank high in God’s kingdom” (Matthew 18:3-5). In Paul’s first letter to Timothy, he states to “…simply love” (1 Timothy 1:5). And then again, in his second letter, he urges, “Don’t ever quit. Just keep it simple”(2 Timothy 4:2). Jesus wants us to simply be ourselves with them and Him! And He simply wants us to be ourselves with each other. Return to square one (think of kindergarten!). Simply smile. Simply hug. Simply share. And simply love one another the way Jesus loves us! Take some advice from a kindergartener and simply smile because Jesus loves you!

Tell Your Story! .R.R. Tolkien understood that hidden within each person is a creative component that mirrors their Maker: the ability to create story. “Man, sub-creator, the refracted light; through how is splintered from a single White; to many hues, and endlessly combined; in living shapes that move from mind to mind” (“Mythopoeia,” 1931). One of our most beautiful gifts is our capacity to create and share stories. Tolkien, well known for “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings,” is a testament to some of our more “myth-making” efforts; Maya Angelou captured this same inspiration in poems. Every year, somewhere between 600,000 and 1,000,000 books are published in the U.S. alone! While that may be a lot of stories, the truth is every individual, all 7,000,000,000+, has a story of their life to be shared with the other individuals they encounter every day! At The U-Turn Institute, we host a group from time to time called “Finding Your Story and Telling it Well.” We believe stories have potential to reach others, encourage others, and help others find life-changing transformation in their own lives! But what should my story look like? We want to help everyone improve their engagement with our changing culture, so here are four critical thoughts from Alistair McGrath to help improve your personal story and how you can share it today. 1.) Your story is not about being alone. The days of “being the tough one” who can “go it alone” are in the past. People understand that humans work better together rather than alone. Highlight the importance of community and cooperation just as the early Church did (Acts 2:46-47). 2.) Your story is not just what you believe. Sometimes, we talk too much about what we believe or what we think rather than what we have experienced. The world is after our hearts, just like Jesus. Take a second and ask yourself, “What does

22 // February 2020

my story say I want out of life?” The first words out of Jesus’ mouth are a question in John 1:38: “What are you looking for?” 3.) Your story is not just about spiritual things. When I first became a Christian, people were focused on “saving souls.” God is after all of me, not just my soul. Isaiah processed his faith with all of who he was, asking God to change not just souls, but also actions, attitudes, and people. 4.) Your story is not just about knowledge. Life is messy. It isn’t a textbook; when you share your story, don’t be afraid to embrace what God has brought to you through practical wisdom! One of my favorite

portions of Scripture is Proverbs 6-10, where we see the difference between wisdom and foolishness. As Christians, we are obligated to share our story and entrusted to do so well. Take time this week to invest in your ability to share what God has done in your life, and then try sharing it with someone important to you!

I know in my heart that God saw me etch those names

prayers in that prayer room. Sometimes, you get weary

times in the prayer room is that one wall had painted

of praying the same prayer year after year. I would like to encourage you today! Do not give up; keep praying. Every loved one I wrote down on that brick wall has now come to know Jesus Christ as their savior! Boy, am I glad that I never gave up praying for them! As I am typing this to you, my dad is in Heaven with Jesus having a glorious time. My mom is alive and doing well and will get to see my dad in Heaven one day. My brother is two years clean from drugs and being homeless. He is working two jobs and gaining his life back, one baby step at a time. WOW! I give all this glory to God. He hears! He sees! He cares! He answers! I want to encourage you to keep praying for those loved ones; your answers will come in a way that you would never imagine. When you feel that you are getting weary, remember what His word says to us. Matthew 6:6 says, “But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private. Then your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.” Matthew 7:7 says, “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. He wrote the ultimate love story from His heart to ours, a story that talks about His divine and true love that only He has for us. You see, God’s love is truly like no other. He holds a type of love that is called “agape.” Agape love is a sacrificial, alwayspursuing, humble, overwhelming, and perfect love. It is a type of love that never fails—ever. We see the actions of this love all throughout God’s Word, and here is an example. In Romans 5:8, it says, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” That verse right there is the Gospel and is part of the most beautiful love story I have been talking about. He is not pressured or rushed; His will is carried out at His pace. From a human perspective, this makes Him the Master at delayed gratification. When something is God’s will, it may not happen very quickly. Consider the following examples: • Noah and his family were never told how long they would be on the ark with the animals. They were on the ark for about one year. • God promised Abram (who was later renamed Abraham) that he would have a child

Luckily, when I crumpled up my faith and tossed it in the direction of the bin, it hit the rim and bounced onto the ground for me to pick up later. I had a realization a few Sundays ago that directed me to iron out the creases from what I had previously wrinkled. I am divinely blessed and have been ungrateful, too blinded by selfishness to see the good. Despite the typical difficulties of life and the unsettling curveballs this year brought, I live a relatively easy life, which brought me to another realization. My faith has always been supplied externally, naturally seeping into my own internal. I grew up with a healthy, supportive family who brought me up in church but encouraged faith beyond church walls. The Cross Crucifies Us Too he cross is not just a symbol of love or a ransom statement. The cross is your daily decision to deny yourself, your rights, your wants, your dreams, your plans, and your goals and deliberately, wholeheartedly, unreservedly live out your commitment to His will, His way, His word, and His wisdom. The cross is your decision to live for Jesus, period. No “ifs,” “ands,” “buts,” or “maybes.” Would you take up your cross—every day—and follow Him?

Christianity is a relationship with the living God through His Son, Jesus Christ. It all goes back to the cross. In fact, the whole message of the Bible could possibly be summed up in the message of the cross. Paul says in Galatians 6:14, “But may it never be that I should boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” The cross is the message of not only Christ’s dying for us but also our dying with Christ and being raised to walk in the newness of life. The hinge of the whole epistle to the Galatians is in 2:20: “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and delivered Himself up for me.” In the last part of 6:14, the message of the cross is clearly defined. Paul says, “…through which the world has been

46 // February 2020

crucified to me, and I to the world.” It is at the cross that we are separated through death to the world and all its influences. Paul stands dead to the influence of the world that he was once such a part of. The phrase “has been crucified” is perfect passive: I am in the condition that I’m in because of what happened to me back at the cross. The word for “world” has no definite article before it. It qualifies something, which the context defines as Paul’s former world. Now, it has been crucified to him. It could not in the least tempt Paul to return to the world. It has no claim on him, and he has no attachment to that world anymore. What was your world before you were converted? What was it that you received your praise and identity from? What claim do you think it still has on you? You and the world you used to know parted company when you put your faith in Christ. Believers are “new creations” in Christ. A new creation is a wonderful term. “New” is kainos, meaning qualitatively new—something never seen before and which will never cease to be new. New forever! Now, put this “new” with the word ktisis, “creation.” It refers to that which is created, but the emphasis is on the process of creation, not the finished product. The process of making a new creation in Christ will never change or be replaced. The only way we are new creations is through what Christ has done. We are products of the cross. No effort of the flesh can produce new creations. A Litany Of Humility O Jesus meek and humble of heart, From the desire of being esteemed, Deliver me, From the desire of being loved, Deliver me, From the desire of being sought, Deliver me, From the desire of being honored, Deliver me, From the desire of being praised, Deliver me, From the desire of being consulted, Deliver me, From the desire of being approved, Deliver me, From the desire of being considered, Deliver me. Focused On The Goal hen on a road trip, little kids in the back seat of the car can often be heard saying, “Are we there yet?” They may ask this question several times along the journey. If the travel is to a destination like Disney World or Dollywood or Lake Winnepesaukah or somewhere else fun for them, the anticipation is sometimes more than they can seem to handle. Thus, “Are we there yet?” may be a frequent exclamation. The destination has become the goal they are intently focused on. In several sports, the goal is the desired end. “Fourth and goal” is a critical point for a football team’s offensive players seeking to advance the ball beyond the goal line and score points. In a game of soccer, a goal is scored when the ball passes over a goal line at the end of the field. In order for these teams to score points, their focus has to remain on the goal. The word “focus” can be well described as an acronym: Follow One Course Until Successful. 50 // February 2020

In Philippians 3:13-14, Paul writes, “But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Paul’s focus was upon continuing toward what God had called him to and setting aside whatever mistakes he had made in the past. He was intently focused on the goal. What goals do you have? Maybe you are setting resolutions for the new year ahead. Be encouraged today. Set goals for your life that are specific, measurable, and attainable and that line up with God’s Word. Try not to focus on the mistakes or disappointments of the past. Keep your focus on the goal ahead. Move forward in life with the direction that God’s Word can provide.
