I’d guess that the facilities would be less scrutinized and that the expectations of how others in the room are “supposed” to respond would be very low. Now, switch the scene to the church, especially in a community like ours, where church attendance has been so highly prioritized over the years. The simple reality is that we all feel as if we know how church is “supposed” to be done; we have allowed preferences to become expectations. Preferences in dress, décor, music, teaching style, order of service…well, you get the picture. And even more problematic, we have extremely high expectations of how we are supposed to be treated by others. Were we greeted in the right way? Did the right people bring us a meal, call us, or visit when a difficult time hit? Was I given the same opportunity for ministry as other people? The principle here is this; when your expectations differ from the reality around you, the result is disappointment.

Help

his one word could change your life. You could ask God for help with anything in your life. You should be asking God for help more than you shouldn’t. Whether it be, “God, please wish me luck on my reading test,” or, “ God, please help my

grandma through her stroke,” your cries for help still matter. God makes your pleas for help His first priority because He loves us. He doesn’t care if you are asking Him to do something big or little; He will be overjoyed that you are asking Him to help you.

8 // December 2019

It’s okay if you don’t know how to say something. Just get all the words out, and God will make sense of it all. It is okay if you don’t have anything to say. God understands. Don’t feel like you can’t ask anybody else besides God to help you. If you can’t ask God to do something, for Heaven’s sake, ask somebody! But you should also ask God for guidance. Read your Bible and pray every day. Remember, God made you special, and he loves you very much! Matthew 7:7-8 says, “Ask, and it shall be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”

It’s Simple, Not Easy MONEY MATTERS

WITH DR. ANDREW LEE

W

e often think of the words “simple” and “easy” as synonymous, but that’s not exactly true, especially when it comes to managing our finances. There is a big difference between knowing what to do and having the self-discipline and long-term mindset to actually follow through by making wise financial decisions. Many people have pointed out the similarities between personal finance and physical fitness. With physical fitness, it’s simple to know you should burn more calories every day than you take in, eat fewer fattening foods, etc. But doing it isn’t exactly “easy.” Here are some financial examples. It’s simple to track where your money goes every month. Just check your banking app on your cell phone or your bank’s website on your computer. It’s also simple to write a monthly budget showing where you want your money to go. And it’s simple to set up automatic bank drafts every month to direct money into your investment and savings accounts. But is it easy? It’s not easy to realize your monthly budget shows that you can’t eat out again this week or go on that weekend getaway with your friends. It’s not easy to tell your friends “no” (though it is simple—just say it). It’s not easy to keep driving your reliable but ugly car when everyone you know is driving a brand-new car with expensive monthly payments for the next five or six years. And it’s not easy to discipline yourself to delay gratification today in order to ensure a secure financial future. In other words, the steps to financial health are all pretty simple in terms of being convenient, not very time-consuming, and not requiring a lot of technical knowledge. But it’s not always easy to deny our ego-wants, to resist keeping up with the neighbors,

10 // December 2019

He and his wife Esmerelda have three children. and to explain to friends that getting out of debt and investing for the future must take priority over that fun trip to the Caribbean. To accomplish our financial goals and establish healthy financial habits, we may need to change how we think about money and how we handle money. We’ve all heard the definition of “insanity” as “continuing to do what you’ve always done, and expecting to get a different result.” So, here’s a novel idea that I hope you’ll try for yourself. Try making your budget by working “backwards” this time. Most people make a budget by listing all of their monthly expenses, and then seeing if there’s anything left over after all the bills are paid. If there is any money left over, only then do most people think of saving and investing. If the budget reveals there’s no money left over after all the bills are paid, only with this realization do they start to look at where they can cut expenses. Instead, try doing it backward by writing down the amount of money you want or need to save and invest and give each month, and then list your monthly expenses and try cutting as you go to make your saving/investing/giving numbers work. This prioritizes your own financial health (saving, investing, giving) instead of other people’s financial health (the mortgage company, the utility company, the cell phone company, the cable TV company, the credit card company). Obviously, I’m not suggesting you don’t pay your bills on time. Instead, I’m suggesting that by starting each month’s budget with your own financial priorities (building wealth for the future), you’re more likely to understand the need to make some sacrifices today by cutting your expenses in order to create a more financially secure tomorrow.

He’s Still A God Of Healing

O

by Kelly Wells

ur pastor has been talking a lot lately about healing. It has taken me back several years to the times when I needed healing myself. You see, sometimes, God

decides to heal instantly or by taking us home to be with Him. Other times, He requires you to be obedient, take His Hand, and follow His directions, just like we read in 2 Kings Chapter 5. A messenger came to King Naaman, a leper, and told him

to dip in the Jordan River seven times. The waters would heal him and his skin would be back to normal. His healing took his obedience. Our obedience is the key to the process of our healing, and in it, we learn much along the way. The journey through our obedience may be difficult, but is utterly amazing the moment you look back and see what God has done. Shortly after my daughter was born, I woke up one morning with a swollen knee. It was so swollen I could hardly bend my leg to walk. I had two young children at home, and to not be able to walk was terrible for me. When I saw that the swelling and pain were not going to go away, I went to the doctor. He then referred me to an orthopedic surgeon, who began taking fluid off my knee, gave me a steroid shot, and ordered an MRI. Unfortunately, the report determined I had rheumatoid arthritis. He then referred me to a specialist, but even with insurance, I had to pay $300 up front for him to see me. For a young stay-at-home mom of two, this was impossible! What I do know is that when it seems impossible, you hand it over to a God. I remember laying in my bed, praying for other people I knew that needed healing. At the end of my prayer, I decided to pray for my knee. I said, “God, will you take this arthritis from me?” Suddenly, I felt a warming go through my entire body, and God spoke to my spirit and said, “Go run up and down your stairs!” I jumped out of my bed, and I did those things! I was healed in Jesus’ name! Now, when I pray for others who need healing, I pray knowing He is a God who Heals. Another time my healing came, it wasn’t instant. He came to me one day as I was withering away on my couch, wallowing in my depression. I had suffered and wrestled with this terrible thing for years. I missed a lot of life living in darkness! But suddenly, God came to me and said, “Get up

storm. When you are sucked into a pit of darkness, you miss all these things. It’s like being trapped in prison, and all of a sudden, the door opens and someone says, “You’re free to go!” The world becomes more precious, and your time with others becomes more meaningful. Your eyes begin to see things you never would have noticed before. You also begin to slow down and travel at a pace that no one else seems to understand. Did I enjoy wallowing in that deep dark pit for all those years? Of course not! It seems silly to say, but I am thankful for the dark time. I am able to see much more clearly now. The best part is helping others out of the same pit and writing about my pain to help others in their suffering. “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).

Five Healthy Habits

(From A 93 Year-Old Sweetheart) nock, knock! Who’s there? Hatch. Hatch who? God bless you, but cover your mouth next time! Unfortunately, as our kids enter this world, they don’t arrive with personal “how-to” instructions. Can you imagine it? Your little boy arrives on your doorstep (in an Amazon delivery box, of course!) and tucked neatly beside him are step-by-step instructions on how to answer all his questions, respond to all his needs, and nurture him perfectly into adulthood. Wouldn’t that be wonderful? Well, that’s not how it happens. The good news is we, as parents, can dig into God’s “how-to” Book of instructions and teach, lead, and guide them in the right direction! Proverbs 22:6 says plainly, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he shall not depart from it.” I have noticed, nonetheless, that some parents neglect to teach even the smallest of the healthiest habits. Last week, I had breakfast with a 93-year-old resident at the local nursing home. Twice, she has been crowned the “Sweetheart” of their facility. Words fail me when I try to describe her beauty, wisdom, and grace. An unapologetic, deep-rooted Christian, she had this to say about the healthy habits we should be exercising and teaching our children: The woman with an issue of blood (Matthew 9:20-22) got down on her knees and crawled to touch the Savior. That’s humility, humbleness. We need to teach habits of humility and humbleness. Saying “Excuse me” or “I’m sorry” goes a long way because everything tastes better with a little sugar on it. My mother also taught us to look someone in the eye when speaking. It shows respect. It says “I see you and I respect what you are saying”. And even when you don’t have anything good to say about someone...because not everyone is as sweet as I am...don’t

24 // December 2019

say anything. Your words get to the future before you do so make sure you teach your children to speak words of faith and words of love. So, there you have it! Did you catch all 5 healthy habits we should be teaching our kids? Practice Humility. “...its wages are riches and honor and life” Proverbs 22:4 (NIV).

Show Respect. “Show respect to the aged; honor the presence of an elder; fear your God. I am God” Leviticus 19:32 (MSG). If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything! “Watch the way you talk. Let nothing foul or dirty come out of your mouth. Say only what helps, each word a gift” Ephesians 4:29 (MSG). Speak words of faith. God speaking: “...for I will hasten my word to perform it” Jeremiah 1:12 (KJV). Speak words of love. “Your life must be controlled by love, just as Christ loved us...” Ephesians 5:2 (GNT).

discovery day, a day that gave us the opportunity to meet with

with Dr. James Marcum, a world-renowned cardiologist with

the corporate leadership. At the end of the day, the Cleveland

Chattanooga Heart Institute—for my husband. The thought

occurred to me multiple times in my waking hours, but I was busy, and he was busy. He had never been to a cardiologist, was in seemingly perfect health, was very active, rarely sick, and had never had surgery or even been in the hospital. I delayed for a few weeks, and then I started to wake in the early morning hours—3 or 4 a.m.—and my first thought would be, “You’ve got to make an appointment for him.” So I scheduled an appointment. At first, he complained that I didn’t need to do that because he was active, felt good, and had no symptoms of anything wrong. I told him I would go with him to the appointment to help him be more accepting of the idea. We saw Dr. Marcum on July 20, 2018. The in-office visit went well, the EKG was perfect, and everything sounded good, so Dr. Marcum said he typically didn’t go further unless the patient just really wanted to do so. I asked what the next step would be, and he said he would order a stress test. I told him I couldn’t really explain it, but we needed to take the next step for my peace of mind. A stress test was scheduled for the following Wednesday. Marty wasn’t nervous about the stress test because in his 35 years at Olin, he had always done exceptionally well on his annual stress test. After his test on July 25, he said he had not done well, becoming very breathless during the evaluation. A couple of hours later, Dr. Marcum’s office called him, saying that they wanted to see him back in the office two days later, on Friday, to talk about his results. That evening, I told him he should probably start to mentally prepare himself for the possibility that this was going to lead to something very serious. When Dr. Marcum walked into the room on Friday, he quickly got to the results of the stress test. Indeed, he wanted to go further with testing and scheduled an arteriogram for Friday, August 10. A procedure that was expected to take 45 minutes was done in 11 minutes. Dr. Sam Ledford delivered the news: seven blockages, two at 100%, two at 90%, two at 80%, and one, the “widow-maker,” at 50%. Open-heart coronary bypass surgery was necessary, with five bypasses required to repair the blocked arteries. We met with Dr. James Zellner at Memorial Hospital on August 30 and scheduled the surgery for Monday, September 17. We saw the goodness of God as we watched the video when we previewed the surgery with Dr. Zellner. As the radioactive dye lit up the arteries, we could see the blockages as the blood flow hit stopping points. Within seconds, the capillaries that his heart had grown to facilitate collateral blood flow would light up, taking the much-needed blood to the heart, like a tree that grows roots to find water. Both Dr. Ledford and Dr. Zellner confirmed that if he had encountered a coronary incident, he would have dropped right where he stood and could not have been transported to the hospital quickly enough. He would have been gone in an instant.

Our closest friends were nervous about the span of time before the surgery would be done, but we both felt confidence in the staff and the care at Memorial Hospital, so the three weeks we had to prepare for the surgery gave us time to get the word out to our family, friends, neighbors, church, and our customers. All those contacts reached out to their families, friends, neighbors, and churches. HoneyBaked corporate affiliates and other franchise owners shared the news in their circles, so by the time we arrived at Memorial Hospital on Monday, September 17, thousands of prayers had been lifted on our behalf. One of my favorite quotes of all time is by Alfred Lord Tennyson: “More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of.” I cannot explain the overwhelming peace that Craig and I felt as we watched him be taken to surgery. Because of an emergency surgery, we were delayed until 3:30 in the afternoon, but the surgery was complete by 7:30. It was expected that he would be in cardiac ICU for two or three days, but he was up eating breakfast at 5 a.m. the next morning and was out of ICU at 2 p.m. 72 hours after the surgery started on Monday, we were pulling into the driveway at home. His recovery and cardiac rehabilitation at Tennova were nothing less than remarkable. When I tried to explain the peace and confidence we all felt that the surgery would go well and he would recover, I could not find the words, except to say that the thousands of prayers that were prayed on his behalf gave us the peace that the world cannot explain, the peace that only God can give. I will forever be glad that I listened to that urging in my spirit and thankful that God spoke to me. I am certain that the whispers at 4 a.m. were the Holy Spirit getting my attention because it was then that I finally decided to act. So, through God’s tender grace and mercy, my husband is here to enjoy our precious family and continue to help Craig and me with our business. His tremendous support of my role as president of the Board of Trustees for Tennessee Christian Preparatory School has been invaluable. When I was appointed to serve on the Franchise Advisory Council for HoneyBaked, he cheered me on. I can’t imagine life without him by my side: the “Pop” that is adored by our four grandchildren and makes their “Gimmy” complete.

I have seen TikToks of fatherless teens making jokes to ease their pain, as well as TikToks of people who are honest about the pain of not having a dad there to be at their games, teach them how to play ball, play music with them, etc. My heart broke as I was reminded that many fathers are absent from the home. To make matters worse, fatherhood is not celebrated in our society. Turn on any television show and the father is usually a dork who is not in tune at all to the needs of his family. Perhaps, because of the way we were touched as infants and children, our ability to give loving touches and our need to be touched were affected. Some people seem to have a higher need

A loving touch is enough to change everything. Touch builds trust and cooperation and gives confidence and encouragement. Touching improves mood and reduces stress. Touch creates an emotional bond. It can communicate sympathy and approval. It will make a world of difference in your marriage. Researchers at the University of Virginia conducted experiments to see how the brain reacts to pain when a person is alone or holding the hand of a loved one. When alone, the areas of the brain processing danger lit up. When holding the hand of a loved one, the brain relaxed. An electric shock was given to the ankles of wives in

find themselves isolated and alone as time goes on. It usually starts gradually. The caregiver gives up a few favorite hobbies or social organizations they just don’t have time for. As the senior loved one’s condition worsens, the family member gives up more and more. They often fail to realize how lonely they’ve become until considerable time has passed. Here are two more reasons a family caregiver may become isolated: 1. Sense of obligation: Adult children and spouses who are caregivers might feel a strong sense of obligation when it comes to taking care of their family member. This leads them to think no one else can provide the quality of care their loved one they may decline the assistance. 2. Not familiar with senior care: Some family caregivers don’t realize how many senior care options are available in their area. While most know about nursing homes, fewer are familiar with respite care, adult day centers, and assisted living communities. Short-term care, also known as respite care, at an assisted living community can give a weary caregiver an opportunity to take a break for a week or so. It also allows them to test out the community and see if it is a good fit for the senior to move to on a long-term basis. If you are a family caregiver who is battling loneliness and isolation, we have a few suggestions for helping you reconnect. 3 Ways to Regain Balance When You Are a Caregiver 1. Investigate senior care options: Most caregivers are surprised to discover how many senior care options are available in their own neighborhood. If you aren’t familiar

them know you have missed them and that the responsibilities of caregiving are the reason you’ve been out-of-touch. Try to plan something fun—away from the duties of caregiving— once or twice a month. Discuss quick ways you can stay connected when caregiving duties are at their peak, such as text messaging, social media, and video chat. 3. Join a support group: Connecting with fellow caregivers who understand the challenges you face can also decrease the loneliness you might be experiencing. There are support groups that meet in your local area at libraries, senior centers and assisted living communities. One final suggestion is to try not to feel guilty if you take time out from caregiving to enjoy your life. It is a fairly common emotion for caregivers to struggle with. The only way to stop sin is to repent and ask God to rescue us from the mess we got ourselves into. We have to get at the “root” of the sin by allowing God to purge and cleanse us (1 John 1:9). Romans 8:37 says that we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. God is always with us as we use that free will He allows, and He knows us better than we know ourselves. Bake in the oven 35-40 minutes or until the center of the cake comes out clean. Allow to cool. To make the topping: In a large bowl, beat together whipped topping, pineapple with juice, and dry pudding mix until blended. Spread on the cake. This recipe is simple and good. It is a special cake to my family. This was a cake my grandmother would make for the holidays, and we would always look forward to it. I hope you enjoy it as much as we have.

pitched His tent and tabernacled among us in the person of

In the Bible, John 1:1 is one of the most critical verses in all of Scripture. It reveals to us the deity of Christ. Moreover, it points to the true fact that Jesus Christ is coequal to and coexistent with God. The Apostle John uses an interesting term in relation to Jesus. The term is rendered in the Greek New Testament, Logos. It means “word,” “message,” “thought,” or “expressions.” John explains that in eternity past before creation, Jesus (the Word) was with God face to face. John says that in Jesus are the very thoughts and expressions of God. In other words, Jesus is God. Although Jesus and the Father are two distinct persons, they share the same divine essence. Jesus asserts, “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30; 14:9). Jesus is the Logos Word. II. Jesus Christ is the Living Word (John 1:4). All that lives or exists is because of Jesus Christ. Luke, the historian/physician, says, “For in Him we live and move and have our being” (Acts 17:28). Jesus is the Living Word. In our text, the term “life” refers to salvation and deliverance. In other words, all who believe in Him have everlasting life (John 3:16).

Jesus Christ. Jesus is actually God in the flesh (Colossians 2:9). He is a real human being who once lived on earth. He is absolute deity and true humanity, two natures in one person (hypostatic union). Because He was a man, He would get hungry, thirsty, sleepy, and cry. But because He’s God, He performed miracles, raised the dead, healed the lame and sick, walked on water, rebuked the wind and the sea, turned water into wine, and ultimately, rose from the dead. Jesus is the GodMan. Although Jesus was a real man, He was an impeccable phenomenon. Even though He endured a bona fide temptation, nevertheless, He never sinned at any time. He’s the most unique human in all of history. Friend, there is no Christmas without Christ. Let Jesus Christ be at the front and center of your holiday season. Thank God Jesus came into this world to save sinners. After all, Christmas is not merely a traditional holiday; it is a holy day. No wonder the words of the great hymn of old say, “Joy to the world, the Lord has come. Let earth receive her King.” Jesus is the Legitimate Word. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

From “Why” To “How” hen my children were young, they would ask “why” questions. Why do birds fly, cows walk, and snakes slither? My favorite reply was, “God made it that way.” At some point, the questions became more difficult. Why do kids make fun of me? Why does my teacher humiliate me because of my faith? Why do the youth at church not accept me? The “God made it that way” reply no longer answered their questions. As an adult, it is easy to be a “why” person. Why does

my friend have cancer? Why do children have to suffer? Why do I have pain that is not relieved? Why can’t I have children? Why do bad things happen to good people? Why does my church have to do that kind of music? Why does the pastor go 10 minutes late? Why can’t I afford the car I want? Why doesn’t God heal me? Job is NOT my favorite book of the Bible. It never answers my “why” questions. Why did God allow satan* to come into His presence? Why did God bring Job to satan’s attention? Why did Job’s friends sit with him only to offer such hurtful advice later? When God answered Job, why did He not really answer him? God does not always tell us these answers in His Word. In searching the Scriptures, I find no promise of an

46 // December 2019

easy life. I find that life is like a bed of roses…a few flowers among many, many thorns. Paul was given a thorn in the flesh. John was beheaded. Daniel was thrown to the lions. The disciples were tortured and killed, as were many Jesus’ followers, and this is still happening today. Changing my perspective from “Why” to “How” takes the focus off of me and turns it to God. How can God’s love be ministered to others during this challenge? How can I continue to serve God even when I am in pain? How can this grief drive me deeper into God’s love? How can I live my life at this very moment to deny satan and to bring glory and honor to God? Isn’t that the real question? “How can I glorify God?” 1 Thessalonians 5:14-24 gives the answer: “And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit… hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil… He who calls you is faithful; He will surely do it.” That’s the “how.” We can walk out these verses because He who calls us is faithful. HE WILL DO IT. In the end, the “how” question brings us to the answer to “why”…to glorify God. *I prefer not to give satan any glory, therefore I choose not to capitalize his name.

God has put many people (going through cancer or other life-changing events) in front of me to minister to about God’s faithfulness. I am a firm believer in a healthy lifestyle. On January 5, 2010, I had a lumpectomy (a surgery where the lump was taken out and several lymph nodes were removed). My attitude was positive. On February 4, I received my first treatment. I was nervous and scared, but I knew God was right there beside me. God would guide me through this.
