Letter from the Editor

T

his year more than 10 million florists will send flowers to honor mothers and 150 million cards will be delivered to mothers in more than 46 countries around the world. Mother’s Day is something to which everyone can relate. Whether biological, adoptive, stepmother, or godmother, the influence of a mother reaches across regions, religions, castes, cultures, genders, and every financial status with a guiding force that molds and shapes the lives and personalities of her children. There could not be a more universal celebration. But long before Mother’s Day was designated on the calendar of any country, God signed a resolution that commanded us to honor our mothers. He wrote it with his finger on tablets of stone. We know it as the fifth of the Ten Commandments: “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you” (Ex. 20:12 NIV). The following is taken from an anonymous poem that describes the things mothers teach their children just by being an excellent example: When you thought I wasn’t looking . . . I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator, and I wanted to paint another one. I saw you feed a stray cat, and I thought it was good to be kind to animals. I heard you say a prayer, and I believed there is a God I could always talk to. I saw tears in your eyes, and I learned that sometimes things hurt, but it’s all right to cry. When you thought I wasn’t looking, I looked . . . and wanted to say thanks for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn’t looking. A few years ago when I wrote the book, Gifts of Grace in Women of Faith, I made this dedication: “To the memory of my mother, Leona Gore, who was capable of sharing a bathroom with five daughters and still make it to church on time; who transformed small, mundane parsonages into homes we could call our own; whose creative sewing made homemade dresses look like designer fashions; who always put others’ needs before her own, thereby teaching me by example how to share God’s gift of grace with others.” It is a privilege to honor mothers not only on Mother’s Day, but every day of the year. A Special Gift for Mom

N

by Danielle Jennings

othing says Mother’s Day like a sentimental, handmade gift. From handprints in clay to handcrafted cards,

Mother’s Day is not complete without those gifts that are made with love. It is also not complete without flowers. Any type of flower, as long as it is given with love, is never a bad flower! So why not create flowers out of handprints? What a special way to deliver those flowers to Mom!

What you’ll need: • White sheet of paper

• Green paint for the stems • 4 other colors of paint • 1 color for the ribbon

• 3 colors that you want your flowers to be (Mom’s favorite colors would look nice!) • Paintbrushes

• Sponge to apply paint to hands!

How to:

• Apply the first color of paint to one of your hands • Press hand down firmly on piece of paper

• Apply second color of paint to the other hand

• Press down firmly overlapping the thumb on the first hand • Next, paint the stems with green paint from the palms to the bottom edge of the paper • Allow those hands and stems to dry for a few minutes • Apply the third color of paint to one of your hands, and overlap the other two handprints in the middle. • Your fingers should be right about where the thumbs are • Press hand firmly down on the paper

• Paint a green stem from that palm downward to the edge of the page. • Using your 4th color, paint a ribbon around the stems where they come together. • Let dry and present to Mom on Mother’s Day!

named Ananias. The Lord called him in a vision and told him to go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and seek out a man called Saul of Tarsus who was blind. He was instructed further to lay his hands on him that he might receive his sight. Ananias naturally was afraid, but the Lord said, “Go” in verse 15, and he did as the Lord commanded.

1. Each of us needs other Christians at times to help us through a difficult situation. 2. A visitor is more at ease if he or she is accompanied by a friend or a small group. 3. An excellent tool for church growth is the development of small groups or “communities.”

The Scales fell from Saul’s eyes and he got up and was baptized. He took some food and regained his strength. In verses 19(b)-20 we read: “Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus. At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God” (NIV).

Ringtone Misery Turns to Morning Glory

I

Casting my fears and concerns on the One who cares for the sparrow−and me! by Sheila Bird

’ve never been a morning person so when my cell phone alarm went off, I wanted to hide it under the mattress and go back to sleep. It didn’t matter what I was going through, how I felt, or how much sleep I had the night before; I could always count on that relentless little ringtone to force me out of my cocoon of blankets and into the light of day. This particular day I was so overwhelmed by the cares of life that I would have postponed the sunrise if that were possible. Reluctantly I dragged myself out of bed, muttered a half-hearted prayer, and got ready for work. The things I had left undone the day before and those that lay ahead of me were all I could focus on. My husband drove me to work that day. He is one of those awful morning people. Before he has even had breakfast, he is chattering away about everything under the sun. I, on the other hand, don’t speak until it becomes absolutely necessary. Since I didn’t take the time to dwell on the Lord, who so graciously gave me another day to live; I began to cast my cares on my husband. I figured he could handle my insecurities. So I said to him, “I don’t know why in the world the Bible tells us not to worry about tomorrow. I am not sure it’s even humanly possible.” He calmly agreed with me that it is difficult to hand our cares over to the Lord. He assured me that God knows what is best for us even when we don’t.

14 // May 2017

He said that no matter how we interpret the scripture about tomorrow, that life will go on. So I agreed with him that everything would be alright, even though I still questioned how. As we arrived in the parking lot where I worked, everything was still dripping wet from a brief summer rain. Sunrays were piercing a light fog that was slowly lifting from the ground. I opened the car door and heard a little bird singing. It was loud and strong, happy and carefree. The little bird seemed completely unshaken by the wind and the rain that had passed through just hours before sunrise. In my typical morning disposition I said, “Listen to that bird. What’s he got to sing about anyway?” And in my husband’s atypical, lighthearted way he answered, “Maybe his bills are paid and he has no thought for tomorrow.” As I walked down the sidewalk, conviction fluttered in my heart like the wings of that little bird. His song became impossible to ignore. It caused me to turn my eyes and ears toward heaven. As I did, my aches and pains, worries and cares lost their grip on me. I decided to join the little bird in song. I think it went like this: “I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free, for His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.” Sheila Bird writes from her home in Cleveland, TN. She is a published author and is passionately pursuing the ministry of encouragement through free-lance writing.

How to Change Your Child’s Future—Joyfully Instead of grieving over the negatives of your past, rejoice in the expectation of God’s miraculous, divine intervention.

H

by Mike Shreve

ave you ever quoted that much-loved Bible verse, “The joy of the Lord is your strength.” Those eight words are powerful on their own, but the power dramatically increases when the setting is examined. The children of Israel had just returned to their homeland after seventy years of slavery in Babylon. Excitement was brimming. They were going to rebuild the Temple. Thousands had gathered to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles. For hours, they listened to Ezra and others expound the Law. The more they heard, the more they realized how deeply they had failed—and they wept, profusely. Compassionately, their leaders tried to calm their hearts, crying: “Do not mourn nor weep . . . Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet . . . for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength” (Neh. 8:9-10 NKJV). In other words, they were proclaiming: “You cannot change the past by grieving over it. You will only weaken yourself mentally and emotionally. But you can alter the future with praise, by rejoicing in faith-filled expectation of God's intervention and blessing.” That’s how Jesus thrived even in His darkest hour. He endured the cross by looking to “the joy that was set before Him” (Heb. 12:2 NKJV). This source of joy for the firstborn Son is the basis of joy for us today. It is far more effective to rejoice over a better tomorrow than to mourn over a painful present or a terrible past. This concept also works in your role as a parent. Maybe you have nagging regrets. Maybe you feel you

20 // May 2017

failed your responsibility, that you weren’t a good role model, or that you did not guide your children toward their destinies—and now, things are not going well. Or maybe your child was raised in a godly environment, but refused your instructions. Don’t spend all your time and energy grieving. That won’t fix anything. You will only solidify the negatives of the past by rehearsing them over and over in your mind. Instead, take charge over your spirit and rejoice in expectation of miraculous, divine intervention. Don’t just see your child as she is presently. That’s not faith. See your child spiritually mature, morally strong, and fruitful in life; then praise God in advance. Instead of praying the problems (reminding God of everything that is wrong), pray the promises. The following are two of my favorites: “And the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live” (Deut. 30:6 NKJV). “As for Me,” says the Lord, “this is My covenant with them: My Spirit who is upon you, and My words which I have put in your mouth, shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your descendants, nor from the mouth of your descendants' descendants,” says the Lord, “from this time and forevermore” (Is. 59:21 NKJV). Mike Shreve has traveled as an evangelist since 1971. He has written fourteen books, including the best-seller, 65 Promises From God for Your Child. He and his wife, Elizabeth, pastor The Sanctuary in Cleveland and run a Christian publishing company named Deeper Revelation Books.

FEATURED COVER STORY

Athens Lawn and Garden LLC

R

Service after the Sale by Emily Bangura

onnie Lingerfelt started Athens Lawn and Garden LLC in March of 1973. He was working at a local furniture store that also sold lawn equipment. The owner was upset that the mechanic who fixed the machines had not showed up for a few days and customers were calling wanting to pick their machines up because they needed to mow. The owner asked Lingerfelt if he knew anything about fixing mowers. He told him that he and his father repaired their own equipment and he could look at the mowers and try. He was successful in fixing the mowers, and the owner deemed him the new mechanic. This new role planted the seed for what later became Ronnie Lingerfelt’s dream of owning his own lawn and garden shop.

A Life-changing Event

A couple of years later Lingerfelt wanted to open his shop but was running into the usual troubles that many young entrepreneurs run into: borrowing capital to start a new business with no prior loans or credit. This problem was frustrating to Lingerfelt, so he went to the store owner he worked for and asked him for business advice. That’s when his life changed. The store owner told Lingerfelt he believed in him and that he would make sure that he got the money to start his business. He said that he could just repay him as the business grew. Not only did he loan Lingerfelt the money, but he also gave him all his lawn equipment customers, saying that he would rather stick to selling furniture. Lingerfelt now not only had the money to start his business, but he also had an instant customer base.

28 // May 2017

Over the next twenty years, Lingerfelt sold and repaired mowers and grew the business to employing twelve people and establishing Athens Lawn and Garden LLC as one of the premiere local lawn and garden stores around the Cleveland area. As a child, Chad Lingerfelt always envisioned working for his father and running their store. In 1997, he started working for his father by putting together twocycle equipment and working as a runner. Over the next ten years, he grew into the store manager and co-owner. Now, Athens Lawn and Garden LLC is known as one of the largest power equipment dealers in the South. They are one of the top five Ferris & Snapper Pro mower dealers in the nation. They carry nationally branded power equipment such as STIHL, Husqvarna, Shindaiwa, Simplicity, Cub Cadet, Kohler (generators, pumps, and parts), Snapper, Billy Goat, Kawasaki, Briggs & Statton, Mantis tillers, and parts and accessories for many other brands as well. They now have 20-25 employees depending on the season.

Their Expansions and Improvements

They have expanded several times over the years but some of the most recent expansions were building a 36 foot by 84 foot outside showroom to display mowers but also keep them in the dry. They purchased the land and buildings across the street last year to allow them to grow and make use of those buildings and that property. They recently built a new 140 x 40 expansion to the top storage building to keep new mowers that are still in the crates dry and keep their customers’ mowers in the dry the whole time there. Whether they are waiting on being repaired, being

worked on, or waiting for the customer to pick them up, they keep them in the dry under lock and key.

Their Mission

Their mission statement at Athens Lawn and Garden LLC is “service after the sale.” They recognize that they are not perfect and will never be, but they continue to strive to treat the customers better and to be better informed, to be better stocked and better to work with than the competition. Even though they are one of the largest dealers in the South, they hear from their customers that the reason they buy from them is their honesty and integrity and the fact that they get out there with them and treat them like family. Since Athens Lawn and Garden LLC is family owned and operated, Chad Lingerfelt wants and expects nothing less of himself and his company. The Lingerfelts are not only business owners, but they are also very involved with their local community. This community has been great to Lingerfelt’s families and they try to repay that gratitude whenever possible. They support a lot of local charities, church organizations, and non-profit entities, youth sports, boys and girls clubs, girl and boy scouts. When their community was hit with rough tornadoes in the last few years, Athens Lawn and Garden has tried to help out whenever they could. Their employees have donated their time to helping some of those families after work and on weekends, while the company has donated a lot of supplies to the victims and donations to charities to help those victims.

Their company has been voted the “Best of the Best” in Places to Purchase Lawn and Garden Equipment and Have Lawn and Garden Equipment Repaired for the last seventeen years. They are very proud of this fact since this is an award that is voted on by the community and is a reflection of the forty-four years of excellent service they have strived for and maintained through the changes in weather and economy that lawn and garden shops face every year.

Their Philosophy

They have one of the largest parts departments with the most on-hand parts availability of any single retailer in the South—if not the nation. They feel strongly that if it breaks, the key to getting it fixed is having the part on hand for quick service. They have always said, “You can’t sell it if you don’t have it.”

Following that philosophy, they started the year out with over $3 million of lawn mowers on hand ready to be put together and purchased for the new year. They feel this is one of the reasons they have grown so much over the years. Yes, people like to look and research on the internet, but when they are ready to purchase the unit, they want to see it, feel it—maybe even drive it. The same goes for the parts needed to repair a machine. You can’t fix it unless you’ve got it; so, they strive to have the best on-hand inventory for the brands in the south. For information, go to www.athenslawn.com or telephone (423) 745-9296.

Lemons to Lemonade

I

Respecting the right of your spouse to disagree and open your heart to accept another point of view could have a respectful conflict resolution. by Carl Corser

've heard so many times from older couples who say they have never had a feud. Is that really true? Maybe they have sugar-coated reality. Disagreements? Not me and my wife; we don't have them. We just have highly expressive exchanges of words. All couples will sooner or later have conflict. How they approach the resolution is what makes a marriage relationship successful or end up in the divorce courts. Life itself applies enough pressure to our marriages, so heaven forbid that we complicate things with unwise handling of the lemons life serves. Yes, lemonade is so refreshing as we relax in a lawn chair under a big shade tree on a beautiful spring afternoon. How refreshing it can be when we can have peaceful and respectful conflict resolution in our marriages by turning lemons to lemonade. Resolution is so sweet after a bitter conflict.

R—respect E—express S—share O—open L—listen U—understand T—think I—imagine O—offer N—negotiate

32 // May 2017

Please, please, please, start off on the right foot. Respect the right of your spouse to disagree. Express your real concerns and not petty little unrealistic feelings. Find ways to share common goals and interests that unite you as a couple instead of causing division. Open your heart to accept your spouse’s point of view. Who knows it might shock your resolving activity. Listen carefully to your spouse’s concerns and proposals to resolve your conflict. Understand the priority or key issues involved in the conflict. Rabbit chasing should not be allowed in the resolving of a marriage conflict. Think about the possible consequences that would result if the conflict is never resolved. Imagine possible alternative solutions to the present conflict. Think outside of the conflict “box.” Always be willing to offer reasonable compromises that will really make the lemonade so, so sweet and refreshing. When we are being reasonable with each other, conflict-resolving results will be lasting. Negotiate fair and balanced agreements together that will be acceptable to both individuals involved. These agreements then can be realistically kept, therefore taking the old sour lemons in your marriage and making sweet lemonade that refreshes your marriage relationship. Oh, how sweet it is to see a couple’s marriage relationship refreshed.

Constant Yet Changing Passing the baton to new fountains and areas of life helps to step into the unknown but constant nature of God.

T

by Mead Vest

he world seems to be in a constant state of flux. The older I get the faster time seems to go by. In this state of change that seems to be swirling all around, having a steady routine seems to be a high priority to create a peaceful life. I like order, structure, and having a plan. I can be flexible but I like flexibility with parameters. However, God doesn’t always work within expectations. You can’t always look at the past and forecast the future based on circumstances. In the past year or so I was faced with several big decisions, one of which was to move out of a position in which I had been serving for seven years. This position was actually an extension of something I had been actively engaged in for about twenty years in a different manner. I felt like moving out of this position would be saying goodbye to a part of my life that had held my heart for two decades. I would loose the connections and the mentoring opportunities I so valued. It was a difficult decision, since I knew that passing the baton to someone else meant a shift in much of what was familiar. My logical nature and my pros and cons list told me that it didn’t make sense to give up that area of service; however, I had an overwhelming feeling that it was time. I made the decision, which opposed all logic. I can’t say I had peace about it, but I knew I couldn’t ignore the overwhelming feeling to pass the baton. A year later I was faced with several more big decisions. This time one of the decisions was related to

40 // May 2017

another area of my life in which I have been engaged in service for more than a decade. On my logical list, the pros of leaving outweighed the cons and demanded me to make an exit; yet, my inner soul knew I had to stay. I needed to continue working where I was, even though I knew that I was saying yes to an unknown. Things were changing and I didn’t have a clear outlook of what my future held and yet I was compelled to stay put. It didn’t make sense and it certainly wasn’t the same answer I had received about a year prior. In fact, it was the exact opposite. One time my logical side told me to stay when I was compelled to go. The second time it made no practical or logical sense for me to continue on in that area of service, but I had to continue anyway. While God remained constant, He was constantly changing— changing my circumstances; changing my perspective; changing the way I responded. I chose to rely less on the stability of what I was accustomed to and instead step out into the unknown. My decisions defied logic, and to the casual observer may have appeared irrational, but the continual change in my life was based on the constant nature of God. Take Care of the Skin You’re In

D

May Is Melanoma Awareness Month by Hailey Armstrong Gaskin

uring the month of May, the spring season is in full bloom, and summer is just around the corner. This time of year, many people begin to spend more time outside, enjoying longer daylight hours and abundant sunshine. While this might seem harmless, it’s important to take care of the skin you’re in and protect it from the sun’s damaging rays. In recognition of Melanoma Awareness Month and to advance its mission of Making Communities Healthier,® Starr Regional Medical Center wants to ensure community members know the signs and symptoms of melanoma as well as other forms of skin cancer. The hospital also encourages the practice of healthy habits that can help prevent this increasingly common and potentially deadly disease.

Understanding Melanoma

Melanoma is the most common form of cancer in young adults (ages 25 to 29) and one of the more dangerous types of skin cancer. According to the Melanoma Research Foundation, more than 76,000 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed throughout 2016, and an estimated 10,000 Americans will likely die from the disease. What’s even more alarming is that while the prevalence of many cancers has declined in recent years, melanoma rates have been increasing for the past three decades. However, the good news is that melanoma can be treated quite successfully, if it’s caught early. Because new skin spots and growths are part of the natural aging process, it can be difficult to tell when it’s more serious than just a freckle. “We know that 90 percent of melanomas are caused by exposure to ultraviolet rays from the sun,” said Hailey Armstrong Gaskin, FNP-C with Starr Regional Medical Clinic in Etowah. “Essentially, we all have some level of risk, which is why we encourage our patients to be diligent about applying sunscreen, performing monthly skin checks, and taking other precautions to protect their skin year-round.”

Spotting Melanoma

One of the best ways people can spot melanoma early is to perform regular self-exams. Self-exams are best performed by scanning the entire body for any new or changing skin growths in a well-lit room. For hard-to-see areas, use a handheld mirror, or ask a friend or family member to help. To make sure changes are recognized in a timely manner, Gaskin recommends performing these skin checks monthly. To conduct a proper skin check, Gaskin recommends using the ABCDE rule, a simple guide for determining if a growth may be cancerous. If the skin shows any of the following signs, schedule an appointment with a primary care doctor for further assessment. Check to see if . . .

44 // May 2017

Asymmetry—the mole or freckle is cut in half, vertically or horizontally, and it does not match. Border—the mole or freckle has irregular, ragged, notched, or blurred borders. Color—the color of the mole or freckle is inconsistent and contains shades of brown and black, or patches of pink, red, white or blue. Diameter—the mole or freckle is larger than six (6) millimeters (about the size of a pencil eraser). Evolving—any mole or freckle changes size, shape, or color. Other potential warning signs of melanoma include: • A sore that does not heal; • The spread of pigment from the border of a spot into surrounding skin; • Redness or new swelling beyond the border of the freckle or mole; • A change in sensation—itchiness, tenderness or pain; or • Changes to the surface of a mole, such as scaliness, oozing, bleeding or the appearance of a bump or nodule. While these are good general rules of thumb, some melanomas do not fall into any of the above categories. For any changes to existing moles or freckles or new growths that do not resemble other existing skin spots, it is best to be proactive and talk to a doctor. For those who do not have a primary care physician, Gaskin is accepting new patients or Starr Regional has a physician finder located on its website at StarrRegional.com.

Preventing Melanoma

While melanoma is an aggressive and dangerous form of cancer, it is also largely preventable. Individuals who spend a lot of time outdoors can minimize their risk by practicing the following healthy sun habits: • Apply sunscreen daily • Protect skin with clothing, a hat, and sunglasses • Seek shade while outdoors • Schedule outdoor activities before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. to avoid the sun’s most intense hours • Reapply sunscreen every two hours when outdoors. “We encourage people to be smart about sun exposure. Simple steps like applying sunscreen, wearing a hat, and seeking shade while outdoors can significantly lower your risk of developing skin cancer,” said Gaskin. “For those who spend a lot of time in the sun, regularly monitoring the skin is absolutely critical and potentially life-saving.” Hailey Armstrong Gaskin, FNP-C, is a graduate of McMinn Central High School and Tennessee Wesleyan University where she was a standout basketball player. A graduate Tennessee Tech as a certified family nurse practitioner, she started Starr Regional Medical Clinic—Etowah in June 2016 and sees patients two years and older in the clinic and is accepting new patients.

Confessions of a Turkey Hunter: When Opening Day Does Not Go As Planned. (Part 2) Taking Faith to the Field

G

aining my composure on this unusual turkey hunt, I called the landowner to inform her of the fence break and offered my assistance to help fix it. Soon after the call, I heard the farm truck start and begin to make its way across the big pasture. As I sat there, I looked back across the bigger field toward my truck. Would you believe I saw three toms strutting across the field. Newfound strength surged through my veins. Crossing two cross fences and a small open field, I crept into a small clump of pines about 200 yards away. Gobbles thundered as I barely made what would be considered two scrappy yelps out of my completely soaked slate call. They heard me and were heading in my direction at a full rate of speed. Raising my gun, I slowly took aim and proudly watched my first Tennessee gobbler take a fall at thirty-five yards. This all came together in eight great minutes. Now this story could end with smiles and high fives, but in “Rusty fashion,” it doesn’t. I ran to the turkey, thanked Christ for an eventful hunt, and got out the required Tennessee hunting license

by Rusty Asble that has a big game temporary tag attached. Truly a rough morning just got better. As I began to tag my great bird, something caught my eye on the date of my license. I had bought my license on 3/29/07. The night before, I had seen the expiration date as “29,” but it actually read 2/29/08. This year we had “leap day.” Slowly excitement turned into overwhelming fear. Uuuugggghhhh—my stomach gurgled more. Seeing that the landowner had made it to the break in the fence, I headed back in that direction to assist. Finishing in about 40 minutes, I started back to the truck to go renew my license at the nearby TWRA check station/license agent. Leaving the turkey with my “cedar-tree friend” from earlier that morning, I got halfway across the field as the familiar green TWRA vehicle drove down the road by my truck. Knowing I would fully confess, plead for mercy, and be completely truthful with my Wildlife Officer friends, I was ready to go to jail for my wrong-doing. As he turned back around, sweat began to dampen my already soaked body and uuuuuggggghhhhh—my stomach gurgled once again.

As my Wildlife Officer friend came closer, he waved and passed by. I stood there stunned. I got in the truck and quickly headed to the TWRA check station/license agent. Purchasing my new 2008-2009 license again on 3/29, I noticed and made special note this time that it expired on 2/28/09. I headed back to the field where I properly and legally tagged my turkey. Whew! Knowing I still had to check the turkey back at a TWRA check station, I knew it would be awkward to go back to the one where I just purchased my license six minutes before, so I headed across town and used the one over there. Making it back home safely around 11:15 a.m. legal and official, I cleaned my bird with a full case of the stomach flu. After showering, I slowly slipped back into bed where it all began. As my beautiful, sweet wife lay there watching TV, she rolled over and asked, “How was your morning?” I replied, “You would not believe me if I told you.” Uuuuuuggggghhhhh—gurgle, gurgle—oh, my stomach!
