Letter from the Editor

J

uly is a month of celebrations. Many of the articles this month deal with the writer struggling to find a God-given calling, God spoke to me through his Word: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men” Colossians 23:3 (NIV). “Whatever you do . . .” includes everything from homemaking to teaching, to keeping books, to writing. To confirm my calling, God spoke through a friend who phoned me late one evening and said, “There’s a scripture in the Old Testament I believe the Lord wants me to

share with you.” As I was turning in my Bible to Jeremiah, I thought, Jeremiah was the weeping prophet who spoke words of doom and gloom to God’s people. I don’t need that. What I need is hope! And the message I received was certainly one of hope: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. (29:11 NIV). To accept your work as a calling is to receive a sense of purpose that brings a new passion not known before. It’s still work, but work that is more fulfilling and meaningful. Four characteristics usually accompany a divine calling. 1. A calling is distinctive—unique to each individual. So don’t wait for the blinding light to bring you to your knees. God speaks to us in different manners, but most often He speaks through His Word. 2. A calling may be difficult to fulfill. It’s frustrating if you’re work is not in your calling. We want to change, but sometimes this means leaving your “comfort zone” and moving into new territory. It’s risky. 3. A calling disturbs the devil. There is great joy in working in your calling, but there is also great grief. Satan will hinder in every way possible, sometimes using good people to confuse and complicate. This is when most people abandon their calling, assuming that it wasn’t really God who called them. 4. A calling develops into great joy! A true calling reveals its presence with enjoyment and a renewed energy—a passion that comes with doing what God called us to be. The familiar story of two brick layers points out the difference in a job and a calling. The first brick layer was asked, “What are you doing?” “I’m laying bricks,” he replied with a cynical attitude that said, “Can’t you see what I’m doing?” When the second brick layer was asked what he was doing, he replied, “I’m building a cathedral.” That’s a calling! What are you doing—just laying bricks, or building a cathedral? Disclaimer All of the content in the GoodNews Christian Magazine is for general information and/or use. How Big Is Your God?

How you answer this question determines how big your problems are with different effects of their lives. by Jack Epperson

and Luke, Jesus asks the question: Who do you say I am?

If it weren’t for bad luck

I’d have no luck at all.”

And Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of

Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” And they told him, “John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Christ” (Mark 8:27–29 ESV). The most important question ever asked by Jesus could be right here. How you answer this question determines how big God is in your life, which in turn determines how big your problems are. As a pastor, I have watched people go through the same situation with completely different effects on their lives. I knew two women who faced the same disease. One had the disease the other the disease had her. The first had the best attitude. When you talked to her, you had to bring

6 // July 2017

This lady didn’t have the disease. The disease had her. She had a little God. It was impossible to minister to her because no words were as big as her problem. God was not as big as her problem. I don’t know what you face today. My point is not to tell you your problems are not big. I am sure many reading this have problems much bigger than I have ever faced. My point is if you are a child of God, your God is bigger than your problems. You may not feel He is bigger, but that doesn’t change the fact that He is. He is bigger than the lions in the lion’s den; bigger than the fiery furnace, and bigger than the things you face today. How much are you going to worry about your problems? That depends on how you answer the question: “Who do you say Jesus is?” Jack Epperson is the senior pastor at Union Missionary Baptist Church. He is married to Darlene Epperson, they have two daughters and four grandchildren. He retired from TVA in 2011. He has been bi-vocational pastor for thirty-five years.

LIFE forevermore!” One thing that makes our company so different is that we accept people without dance experience. I believe it's part of who we are to bring people’s dreams back to life. Sometimes that means starting from scratch and teaching someone to dance when they are 50 years old! It is my greatest JOY to watch people come into the company. There is often fear in joining a dance troupe. Whether it is acceptance, body image, weight or skill level, we at Unity take you as you stand today- in GOD’s perfect image.

My desire for Unity was to redefine how people within the church viewed “dance” and reveal the excellence and worship that could come from this art form. Starting with a group of just 10 dancers, Unity Dance Troupe developed a reputation for quality performances that portrayed Christian themes. Over the next seven years, Unity produced four original productions, one of which, The Veil, has been seen by over 25,000 people and broadcast live to over 128 countries. ò0 Mission Statement:

W

e believe when people are equipped, motivated, and passionately engaged in living out their faith in Jesus Christ they have the potential to be world changers. Our mission is to bring people into a dynamic relationship with Jesus Christ—a relationship that empowers them to see how God can work through individual personalities, situations, and talents. Christ was an activist, he did not neglect the needs of the people as He brought His message. We strive to encourage everyone to look more like Christ by reaching outside of themselves to serve the needs of others—at home, at school, in communities, and across the world.

Christian Magazine

Writer Guidelines: Who: Our writers range from pastors,

professors, and professional writers to stay at home moms and dads, business professionals, and others who have a desire to reach out to people through words of encouragement.

What: We believe that it is important to laugh

together, praise each other, encourage one another, and to offer biblical advice. Articles can be directed toward everyone, or from woman to woman, or man to man. We love to share recipes and family traditions as well. We ask that articles be kept to a 500 word maximum. We’d love to hear from you!

Where: Please send submissions to articles.goodnews@gmail.com Why: Because God has not intended for us to

just survive. We believe that we are intended to reach out to love and encourage each other. God has brought each of us through tough times, blessed us, and made the “impossible” possible. Let’s, together, share the love of Jesus Christ.
