PRESENT-TENSE BENEFITS OF THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST
M
ost believers view the resurrection of the LORD Jesus either through a historical or a prophetical lens. They tend to look backward to Jesus’ victory over the grave or look forward to the resurrection of believers at the conclusion of this age. But seldom do believers grasp the present-tense benefits that have come to us as a result of this spiritual conquest. Here are seven powerful ones: 1. DELIVERANCE FROM SPIRITUAL DEATH `But God . . . because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ . . .” (Eph. 2:4-5). When Jesus came out of the grave, believers were delivered from spiritual death right then. When we received the resurrected Savior in our hearts, the resurrection process began. Just like Adam in his fallen state died spiritually and began dying physically, so believers are first resurrected spiritually on their way to complete physical resurrection at the coming of the LORD. 2. RESTORATION OF SPIRITUAL BREATH After Jesus arose from the dead, He appeared in the Upper Room and “breathed” on His disciples, saying, “Receive the Holy Spirit” (Jn. 20:22). This was a restoration of what Adam lost in the beginning. The “LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being [a living soul]” (Gen. 2:7 NKJV, KJV). After the rebellion, Adam and Eve became dead souls: alive physically, but dead spiritually. Jesus came out of the grave with a passion to infuse His own with this divine life again. 3. JUSTIFICATION AND RIGHTEOUSNESS Romans 4:25 reveals that Jesus was “delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.” To be “justified” mean to be legally acquitted of all guilt, and reckoned righteous, just as if we never sinned. What an amazing truth! “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us” (Ps. 103:12). He has given us “the gift of righteousness” (Ro. 5:17).

4. HOPE Peter launched his first epistle with the praise-statement, “Blessed be the God and Fa-
ther of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Pt. 1:3). Once we had “no hope, without God in this world” (Eph. 2:12). Now believers have boundless hope—in every situation through “the God of hope” (Ro. 15:13). 5. HEALING Malachi 4:2 prophesies of the resurrection with wonderful imagery, “But to you who fear My name the Sun of righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings.” Jesus was a healer before the resurrection, before the complete price was paid for our deliverance. Surely He arose with an even greater passion to heal His own completely: body, soul and spirit. He is the Great Physician who still says, “Do you desire to be made whole?” (Jn. 5:6). 6. PEACE, HAPPINESS AND PROSPERITY After Jesus arose from the dead, He appeared to His disciples a number of times, always greeting them with the word, “Peace.” Most likely, He actually said the Hebrew word, “Shalom.” This is a rich term with multiple meanings including: peace, rest, welfare, health, wholeness, happiness and prosperity. The “chastisement of our peace (our shalom) was upon Him” (Is. 53:5). He went through the mind-piercing pain of Calvary, crowned with thorns, so we could enjoy “peace with God,” and the “peace of God that passes understanding” (Eph. 2:14; Ph. 4:7). 7. ULTIMATE VICTORY AND TOTAL DOMINION Let’s end with the verse after the scripture we began with, the declaration that God “has raised us up together and made us sit together in the heavenlies in Christ Jesus (Eph. 2:4-6). This describes a supreme privilege, to be enthroned on high with the LORD Jesus Christ in a position of power, authority, rest, victory and dominion. He has made our enemies our footstool. This is the restoration of the dominion Adam and Eve had in the beginning, and this speaks of absolute victory over every negative we face—not just futuristically, but right here, right now.

The He–Haw Servant by Carl W. Corser ello! My name is He-Haw. I have a story I’d like to share with you. Once upon a time there was a king named Jesus who came to a town called Jerusalem. The king had come to Jerusalem many times to visit before, but, this time, the one I want to tell you about was going to be very different. I was standing by a hitching post and at once these strange men came up to me and unhitched me from the post. I started to be fearful, but, this feeling just came all over me and the scared feeling went away. Then I saw my master come out and I thought oh no, what commotion might happen now? The strange men said to my master that a king needed me outside of town for a while. Do you know to my surprise, they consented to my going with these strange men? You know how we are to treat strangers with caution in our world, but this time, I was not at all afraid. So it’s off we go to where the king is waiting patiently for me. When I arrived, there were crowds of people around, talking, laughing, and walking around. I have never seen such a crowd. Wow!!! These strange men led me right to the king and quickly placed a blanket on my back. Oh, oh, grunt, grunt, I went as they helped the king upon my back. Wow! Whoo-whee! I’ve never carried a load like this before. Grunt, grunt, grunt, and away I went toward town. As I carried the king toward town, I saw all these people begin to throw their clothes and palm branches down in the road for me to walk on. I thought, “Wow, this was the most unusual situation I have ever found myself in.” My, my, my, I wonder what’s going to happen next. I was just amazed at all the people lined up along the road and to see their excitement being expressed as the king was coming to their town. As I walked along, I heard many times that April His name was Jesus and that he was a very, 2014

very special person to them. As we continued on, these strange men led me straight to this place I heard them call the temple in the center of town. They helped the king off my back and tied me up to the hitching post. As I was standing there thinking, “Wow”, what a relief it was to be relieved of my load, I saw them rushing off towards the temple talking among themselves. As I stood there, suddenly I heard quite a commotion. Men came running out of the temple scattering doves that began flying away. Yelling and screaming occurred. Then I saw the king upsetting all kinds of stuff on the temple steps. I also heard the king say loudly, “Get out of the holy temple.” I heard other people around me say these men were bad for selling stuff in the temple. Oh my I thought, what a shame. I began to think, “I’m glad I did my part, right”. “Wow”! “The king was quite upset with those men.” A short time had passed and I saw my master coming toward me. I was certainly happy to see him. He was a good master to me. I was well-fed and taken care of every day. After all, this was quite a situation to find myself to be involved in. As the commotion quieted down, my master patted me on the back and said, “You ready to go home?” Off we went toward home. I thought, as we were walking, It was so wonderful to be needed by the king.Wow! What a privilege to have the opportunity to have carried the king to town. Not every donkey gets that opportunity. Wow! Children, if I could talk to you, I’d tell you to always be ready for King Jesus to call upon you when He needs you. He’s very kind, gentle, and most important of all, He loves you so very much. He was very kind to me and I’m just a donkey. Children, as you grow up as I grew up from a colt to an old donkey; serve King Jesus all of your life. Trust me you’ll never be sorry you served Him. I’m glad King Jesus needed me.

by Andrew Lee ecently, I had the privilege of speaking to a group of engaged aged couples as part of a day-long premarital seminar. My session dealt with teaching the importance of budgeting expenses as a couple, as well as investing, saving, paying down debts, and tithing. In other words, in the short span of thirty thir th irty ty minutes, min inut utes es, I attempted atte at temp mpte ted d to cover cov over er much muc uch h of what wha hatt I’ve I ve written I’ wri ritt tten en about in this column during the past year and a half—quite a challenge, but an enjoyable one. During my overview of various financial topics, I kept thinking to myself, What would I have wanted to know about money and marriage when I was a 20-something person engaged to be married? Looking back, my wife Esmerelda and I were very blessed by a fortuitous turn of events just before our wedding. I had been listening to a Christian radio program called “The Money Game” hosted by some guy named Dave Ramsey (this was in 1998), and when I heard he would be speaking in person at the Tivoli Theatre in Chattanooga, I convinced Esmerelda to attend the event with me. At the end of his three-hour speaking engagement, he asked if there were any couples who would be marrying soon. He said he would give as a wedding present a free admission and materials kit for his money-management class, Financial Peace University, to the couple who were tying the knot in the near future. The day was Saturday, February 21, and our wedding was slated for March 7, only two weeks in the future. As a result, Dave Ramsey called us up onto the stage in front of an enormous April crowd and presented us with a free kit so we

could begin our marriage by taking Financial Peace University. Immediately after our honeymoon, we enrolled in FPU at a local church and finished the course over the next two and a half months. It was truly a God-sent, for we learned early on how important it is to be on the “same page” fi nancially fin nan anci cial ally ly speakspe peak aking ing as newlyweds. new ewly lywe weds ds. Now, Now sixteen years later as I was speaking to these engaged couples, I encouraged them to take the course for themselves and to put into practice the common-sense principles of staying out of debt and saving money early on while they were young. Most of all, I urged them to communicate with each other about financial issues (preferably calmly and before a crisis occurs). If you really want to learn who someone is, I reminded them, look at his or her bank statement or credit card statement. A record of our purchases and spending really tells a lot about who we are and what we value. The Bible tells us, “Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matt. 6:21). I believe this is why the Bible has so many hundreds of verses pertaining to money and money management. What money advice do you wish you had received when you were engaged to be married, or when you were a single person in your twenties besides “buy Wal-Mart stock, buy Microsoft stock”? I would be interested in feedback from my readers on this question. nd it came to pass, at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near and said, “LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and I am Your servant” (1 Kings 18:36). The sacrifice referenced above was a declaration that Elijah was a servant of the Most High God. Elijah belonged to God, and he represented God to the people. However, Elijah’s boldness was not a result of who he was; it was the result of knowing God! As children of God under the New Covenant, we don’t have to be timid or fearful when coming to God in prayer. We can approach Him boldly. Let us then fearlessly and confidently and boldly draw near to the throne of grace (the throne of God’s unmerited favor to us sinners), that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find grace to help in good time for every need [appropriate help and well-timed help, coming just when we need it](Heb. 4:16, AMP). It’s intimidating to think about taking a fearless, confident, bold attitude when coming before God in prayer. Yet this is exactly what we are admonished to do! God has already settled the issue of our access to Him, but we

can be assured our access is not because of our own righteousness. It’s because of what Jesus did on the cross. We can come to the throne in such outrageous boldness because Jesus was outrageously righteous! When we pray, we come to God in the authority of Jesus’ name, and we can be confident that we will find grace, mercy, and perfectly timed help. Fasting is not an end of itself; it is a means by which we can worship the Lord and submit ourselves in humility to Him. We don’t make God love us any more than He already does if we fast, or if we fast longer. Fasting involves God in the problem. Then in the strength of God, victory is possible. —Elmer L. Towns

T
here are only 26 letters in the English language. These letters put together can do amazing things! They also have the ability to break a person. The old saying "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me” isn't necessarily true. Ask any child who has ever been told they won't amount to anything or that they are stupid and they can tell you about the emotional scars left by words. Words can lift you up or tear you down. Words can make you feel beautiful or ugly. Words can make or break you. In elementary school Becky Russell told me I had pointy elbows, and trust me when I say it was not a compliment. I am now 37 and I am still very aware of my pointy elbows. Not one other person in all those years has ever said anything good or bad about my elbows, yet the scars and embarrassment Becky caused me that day in the lunch room has stuck with me for years. If I were to see her today, more than likely, she would have no idea who I even was. This weekend I went to the Encounter with my church, which is a ladies weekend retreat. One of the speakers said, "If the words you have spoken this weekend were to pop up above your head in a little box, would they be words that speak life or filled with poison? Such a great analogy! We all say things we don't mean sometimes; at least I hope I am not the only one who has spoken in anger before. Do I wish I could say I have been perfect and I have never raised my voice and spoken to my kids or husband with harsh words? Heck yea, I do! I am human and I make mistakes. Let's take a look at the power words actually have when we use them. Words have the power to bring immeasurable joy! The first time your baby says momma or dada! Need I say more? Such happiness over such tiny words. The first time you hear “I love you” from your significant other or when he whisper sweet nothings in your ear. The compliments from a friend or even better a stranger! The news of a baby, or that you got the job you wanted, the words "Will you marry me?" All of these bring joy beyond belief! Words have the power to bring sadness and April hurt. Words like cancer, death, and miscar-

riage can bring on a crippling amount of sorrow. The moment when your child says, "I don't want to hold your hand anymore," or " Please drop me off here so my friends don't see me with you." Phrases like "You did not get accepted," or "You have not been approved,". Unimaginable hurt can come from the words, "I don't love you anymore." "I hate you", "I want a divorce", or " I have met someone else". Words can bring on love and confidence. When you hear, "I love you! You are awesome!" Things like, "I am so proud of you!" "You are beautiful and funny and wonderful!" "I can't wait to see you!" "I have missed your face!" " You are a great mother, friend, person, wife, husband, or child." Words like "I love you no matter what," are expressions of affirmation. Words can bring on anger and self-doubt. "You will never amount to anything", You're just like your father/mother and he/she was good for nothing!," "I wish you were more like your sister/brother", "You must be stupid to not have known that", or "What's the matter with you!". Words like hate, idiot, loser, ugly, pathetic, stupid, fat, wimp, are just a few of the words people say on a daily basis that can cause everlasting emotional scars. Words have the power to forgive and be forgiven by saying, " I am sorry" and "please forgive me". Words can teach children to talk and preach the Word of God. I for one am going to be more mindful of the words I say. I want to speak life into my children. I want to speak always in love to my husband. I want my friends, family, children, and spouse to know I adore them. I want my children to be confident that as they fall asleep, they are loved and cared for. I want them to never doubt how I feel for them and, I want them to never regret anything I have ever said to them. I want my husband to know my love for him runs deep. I want my words to express respect and love to my parents for raising me. I want my words to express gratitude to God for sending His son to die on the cross for me. I want my words to speak like and not poison. What do your words say? What do you want them to say?

y youngest son never ceases to amaze me. He is polar opposite in everything he does. For example, he can be all-the-way nice one minute, but then not so nice the next minute. He can go from running full steam ahead to sound asleep pretty quickly. There just isn’t a medium place with him. And that is OK. I have learned a lot about what his brain may be thinking, because not much happens internally for him. We are asked to hear his every word and to look at his every movement at every moment of every day. He doesn’t want us to miss a beat. But, just when I think I know everything he will do and say, he still surprises me. Recently we were reading a book together, and in the story there are two brothers picking on a younger brother. The younger brother actually gets in trouble for reacting to his older brother’s teasing. This story really spoke

to my son. As we were reading it, he had me stop on that part of the story and he said to me, “If I were there, I would tell those mean brothers to stop and be nice to their brother…” And this is when my heart warmed and my pride as a mother came flooding in. I just knew after all those disciplinary moments, he was finally getting it! Yes, you need to be nice to your brother and those around you! Yes, you stick up for the one who needs help! Yes, you have learned just what I would want you to learn from this story! However… he didn’t stop there. He finished his statement by saying, “…and then I would throw those mean brothers into a volcano.” And that is when reality came rushing back in. This sweet child of mine still has very extreme opposite thoughts. At first, he was so very kind to stick up for the one in need ...but then so very harsh to want to throw the other boys in a VOLCANO! I must admit, it did make me laugh a little because he said it in such a kind way as if that is just the way things work out. I am a lot like my youngest son. I am always asking God, “Did You see that!?” “Watch what I can do!” “I really think I would have handled that differently God… don’t You like my way better?” But, I know God’s ways are not my ways (see Isaiah 55:8). I also know that I can be completely honest with God and I won’t surprise Him at all, because He already knows all my thoughts (see Psalm 139)-- even the ones that are so extreme they surprise me at times. He is still working on me, just as He is still working on my children. What are your extreme thoughts? Are they so extreme you haven’t even talked with God about them in a while? He would love to listen to you talk about them-- Especially when your parenting days seem so very long and never ending. Those are good times to cry out to Him with raw honesty. He can handle it (Matthew 11:28-30).

WHAT YOU NEED
PREP TIME: 20 min. TOTAL TIME: 4 hrs (including refridgerating) MAKES: 16 servings

14 oz. can of sweetened condensed milk 12 oz. can of evaporated milk 16 oz. of cream cheese softened 1 tbsp. vanilla extract (optional) 6 eggs 1 cup sugar ½ cup water
Also needed: Two - 9 in cake pans Roasting pans for water bath
MAKE IT HEAT oven to 350 F Over medium-high heat, combine sugar and water in a small sauce pan; stir until sugar is dissolved. Syrup should bubble but not boil. Continue to cook, without stirring until mixture turns golden brown (15 minutes). Pour directly into cake pans and swirl around in bottom until completely coated. Do this quickly because syrup will harden almost immediately. In blender combine cream cheese and eggs and blend until smooth. Add condensed milk, evaporated milk, and vanilla and blend well. Divide evenly into pans. To bake place in water bath (a roasting pan works well…place cake pan in it and fill with hot water to reach halfway up the side of cake pan) Bake at 350 for 45 minutes or until set (a thin knife inserted into center will come out clean). Cool on rack. Chill in fridge for at least 3 hours. To unmold run a knife along the edges of flan and invert onto serving plate. Cut each flan into 8 slices. ENJOY!

Finding Balance in an Unbalanced World

verywhere you look these days there is a new diet craze. We are inundated with ads for the latest berry that will magically get rid of our belly fat. Drug store shelves are filled with diet pills, drinks, and bars. Infomercials that demonstrate the best work-out video fill our TV. Bookstores have sections devoted to diet plans and meal programs. It can be extremely confusing and misleading if you don’t know the basics. The first thing I want you to know is that there is no “miracle cure” for getting healthy. Notice that I said healthy and not skinny, because there is a difference. There are many people who are skinny that are very unhealthy, while there are people that are healthy despite the fact that they have a few weight issues. The key is to find what is healthy for you and be comfortable with who you are. In fact, being happy and comfortable with who you are is one of the keys to being healthy. If you are unhappy, it affects your body, your immune system, your motives, and your attitude. It changes your outlook on life and can drive you to unhealthy behaviors such as overeating or not eating at all. So, the first thing you need to do is take a realistic look at your life and make a list of areas in your life that you are happy with and other areas that you wish you could change. Then take the list of areas you want to change and divide them between things that you have the power to change and the things that you don’t. When you look at the things that you don’t have the power to change, figure out why they bother you and see if it is just in your April

mind or if it’s something that you need to get out of. Then take the necessary steps to do it. Of the things that you can change, write out a plan and get it working in your life. You need to realize, though, that these issues didn’t happen overnight and you won’t be able to get rid of them overnight either. It will take time, hard work, and LOTS of discipline. The next thing you need to do is start finding ways to be happier. Replace the unhealthy habits in your life with things that bring you pleasure. As your happiness increases, so will your outlook and health. Your mind is one key to being healthy, but the other key is your body. If you aren’t getting the necessary nutrients and staying active, then your body won’t be able to function like it’s supposed to. And like I just said, those extra pounds didn’t show up overnight and they won’t leave overnight. It will take more than a diet pill or “miracle” berry to lose weight. It will take a balanced diet that includes ALL of the food groups and exercise. This means you will need to include plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, lean protein, dairy, whole-grain fiber, and healthy fats such as MUFA’s (Mono Unsaturated Fatty Acids such as nuts, olive oil, fish and dark chocolate). Your body needs all of these different food groups in order to function properly, and, of course, the “e” word -- exercise! You can’t expect to be healthy and not have some form of physical activity in your life. The most important thing of all is balance. Our world is full of extremes, but if we can find balance in our lives, we will all be happier and healthier!

If someone walked up to you and asked, “What does it mean to play ‘in the zone’?” how would you respond? What professional athlete comes to your mind when you think about playing in the zone? As an athlete, you have certainly been in the zone at least once. To play in the zone means that you are unstoppable. You are the “go to.” You can’t miss. I think you get the point; when you are in the zone, it is an awesome experience. What does in the zone mean if you relate it to your spiritual life instead of your sports experience? Have you ever been in the zone spiritually? What does it take to get in the zone? Let’s dig deeper with a few questions based on Ephesians 5:1-10. Who in the Bible lived “in the zone”? Why? Paul says to be an imitator of God (see v. 1). What does it mean to imitate someone? What things does Paul say someone should do to imitate God (see vv. 3-7)? When playing in the zone, an athlete is unstoppable. When you are living in the zone for Christ, what does your life look like (see vv. 8-10)? The 1924 Olympic runner Eric Liddell said, “God made me fast. And when I run, I feel God’s pleasure. To win is to honor Him.” Ask God to show you what it means to play in the zone for Christ. Pray that you will discover more ways to please Him and not please yourself. The FCA Competitor’s Creed states: “I give my all—all of the time.” When you’re giving your all for Christ, you can bet that you’re spiritually in the zone.

MORE THAN A COACH by Jason Browning

Jason: I was instructed by a friend of yours to ask you about a story that you tell. You like to tell stories and you don’t tell this one often, but I’m supposed to ask you about your first home run.
tional Championships, conference championships, all those letter jackets. I hit third, then I hit home to sell it. . . home to sell it. You know, eternal life. I had to fight a war, but I got it. I got that. But as I found out later, it did not count because I didn’t touch first base. First base is Jesus. You’ve got to touch first base or all of that other stuff doesn’t count. I give a little lesson on how Jesus died for us and died for our sins and we have to go through Him to have eternal life. That’s the story.
Coach Bowden: Well . . . do you want me to tell it?
Jason: Wow, coach, that’s powerful and you know, that really touches on
ecently GoodNews Christian Magazine had the opportunity to speak with former Head Coach of the Florida State Seminoles -- Coach Bobby Bowden. In the interview we discussed faith, family, and football.
Jason:
Yes sir, if you could, that would be great.
Coach Bowden: Ok. I’ve told it thousands of times, I believe, because it’s a very easy description for a young man. I got the idea from a revivalist from Philadelphia that I heard in 1954. He told a story about Goose Goslin. Have you ever heard of Goose? Jason:
Oh yeah, I’ve heard of Goose, yeah.
Coach Bowden: Goose was a hall of famer, played pro baseball and in the World Series, he had something happen to him that happened to me also when I was playing baseball in college.That is, he hit an inside-the-park home run against whoever they were playing, I’ve forgotten. He missed first base, so it didn’t count. And I heard that revivalist tell that story and it really made an impression on me. I used to tell that story about Goose when I would go out and speak. Then I got to thinking, well I had that same thing happen to me when I was in college, so I’ll just tell it about me, and I did. I explained when I was at bat I never hit a home run, couldn’t hit a ball over the fence; it was line drives, about 8 feet off the ground might get a good hit and I could never get one over the fence. So I was up at the plate, the pitcher threw one in and I hit it good. I knew I had a single, a good single. I saw it go through the short stop and second base. I thought I may get 2 out of it so I ran to first. When I circled first, all I wanted to do was hit the bag with the right side of my foot where it wouldn’t slow me down and I could get on down to second. When I got to second, I could see the ball go through the left fielder and the right fielder. It went between them and rolled into the fence. So I thought I’m gonna get three! So I started headin down to third base. I hit second and hit third. When I’m going to third, I can’t see the ball, it’s behind me so I have my third-base coach going to tell me what to do. He’s going to have his hands high in the air which means stay up, pull up right here -- OK ... just stay up. Or, he’s going to have his hands down below his knees, waving them, which means, “slide, it’s gonna be close.” And then the other signal he would give would be waving his left arm towards home plate which means, “Go home! Hit the bag and go home!” And so, he’s waving me in for a home run. So I hit third base and start down the third base line and the catcher moves out on the base line to block me out. So I’m coming down third base and the left fielder gets the ball and throws it in to the short stop. The short stop fires it home. I get there about the same time the ball does and I hit that guy about as hard as I could. About the time I hit his mitt, the ball hit it, it jumped in the air and over on the ground. I reached over the top and touched the bag and the umpire said, “Your safe; got a home run.” So, anyway, I get up, dust my uniform off and kind of happy that I finally got a home run. It was (my) senior year, getting late in the season and the first baseman yelled out to the catcher, “Throw me the ball,” so the catcher got the ball and threw it to the first baseman and he touched first base. The first base ump said, “Your out; you missed first base!” That was sixty-something years ago. I don’t remember if I missed it or not, but I might have. Anyway, I never got a home run in college. Then of course (you ask) why are you telling this story? Well, there is a good example here. Just picture looking down at a baseball diamond from the air, the sky. Second base, that’s all of those good things you’ve done in life. You always went to church, you got baptized, always tithed, tried to obey the Ten Commandments. Third base is all of those honors that you’ve won. The Heisman Trophy winners, Na-
something that I wanted to talk to you about. We’ve always been so thankful. Personally, I’ve been thankful and every time you hear Bobby Bowden’s name, one of the first things that comes to your mind, aside from being a great football coach, is the emphasis on faith and how you don’t hide that. That’s not something that is secondary for you, but it is primary for you and, so I appreciate the life of integrity you have lived and modeled
Jason: I know each team has a chaplain and different takes on how the chaplain works, but what kind of role did chaplains and character coaches play in your organization?
Coach Bowden: Well, in the years that I coached, I would have a lot of meetings, of course I really emphasized the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, but with our chaplain I would have a lot of meetings where he would give devotions and he would actually teach the Bible to these boys. I never was afraid of that. You know, I didn’t care too much about being politically correct. I just wanted to be spiritually correct. And I always felt that God lead me to this -- that when I coached, I didn’t want any boy to ever leave my team after I coached 57 years without knowing about Jesus. I didn’t want one of my players to stand before God on judgement day and say, “I’ve never heard of Jesus.” I thought, I’m going to tell them about Him and, I did. I know this is not politically correctness, but like I said, I don’t worry about politically correct. I just did that all of my life because I was concerned where my boys would spend eternity.
Jason:
Absolutely.
Coach Bowden: People always ask me what my legacy would be. I say that I want my legacy to be that I served God’s purpose for my life. How many games I won and all that stuff is not gonna count. You know? That’s the way that goes. Jason: That’s right. Amen. Well, let me ask you this, Coach. “Do you feel that your faith ever cost you I wouldn’t want you to name names of course or embarrass anybody, but do you think it ever cost you a position or a player, recruit. Do you feel that your faith hindered in any way?”
Coach Bowden: No, never.
I always felt like, by the way, my son is writing a book about me now that’s going to be about faith. It will come out probably in the next half a year. But anyway, the way I always felt about faith is that God is in control. Anything that happened to me, let’s say if it wasn’t good, I didn’t blame faith. It’s the way God wants it, He planned it, He is in control. That is what my faith taught me; that God was in control. Things aren’t always going to be good. Just because you are a Christian doesn’t mean you are not going to get sick. It doesn’t mean you’re not going to die. It doesn’t mean you are not going to have bad things, horrible things happen to you. But again, just remember -- God is in control.
Jason: Yeah. Well, One of the big things
that we hear a lot whenever we’re talking to families or doing family ministry is the challenge of balancing work and family time and all of those different things. Give us some insight into how you balance those things. I know that coaching a football team has to be just tremendously rigorous and difficult to manage. How did you balance that April

family time and coaching time?
Coach Bowden: It goes back to priorities. Get your priorities right. God comes first, wife and family comes second then other people should come third, but it’s one of our hardest things to do. And then comes football - don’t you dare let football get ahead. I speak to the national coaches conference many times where there are two to three-thousand coaches out there and the first thing I tell them is, “Don’t let football be your god.” You’ll be very disappointed if you do. Don’t let it be your god. Put God first, put your family second. Now when I say priorities and put God first, I mean before you do anything, ask God, “Is it OK”? If you don’t feel like it’s OK, don’t do it. If you feel like it’s OK with God then do it. Same thing with your family. If you don’t think your mama or daddy want you to do something, then don’t do it. If you think it’s OK with them, ok do it. That’s what I mean by putting your priorities first.
Jason: Absolutely, that’s beautiful, Coach. Coach, with such a long legacy and a lot of great years and a lot of good things happening, if you could pick one year to go back to and coach it over again and do it, what year would you want to go back to? Coach Bowden: Jason:
‘77. grew up in Lake City, you know that’s pretty close to Gainesville.
1977. Why ‘77?
Coach Bowden: Because that was my second year here. My first year
Coach Bowden:
Yeah.
here, we did not have a winning record. We won five and lost six. Now the people would have still named me mayor if I wanted to run because five wins was better than the year before. I think the year before they won three and before that, none. You know, so they liked that. I didn’t because of the losses. But anyway, the second year, we won ten games and played in a bowl for the first time in about five or six years and won it! We ended up 14th in the nation, which was the first time we’d been ranked in years and that was a fun year. We had some great years later on, but that was a fun year.
Jason: You know what that means . . I’m a . . . Gator fan
Jason: Sure. Now you won it all in ‘93 and in ‘99.
Coach Bowden: Well you don’t plan any different, but as you might expect, it’s a big game! The two biggest games on our schedule was Miami and Florida. People ask me which one of those was more important. Well, it’s whoever was doing the best. You know in the ‘80’s it was all Miami. In the ‘90’s, it was Florida and it was Florida, Florida State. I’d be one they’d be two, or they’d be one and I’d be two. Same way with Miami. So, you don’t prepare differently, you prepare to win every game. You just have a system -- you know, we had a system. But there’s no doubt about it, if you lose it, you’re going to hear about it all year long from the alumni. Oh, they have their favorites. Ask the alumni, who’d you rather beat first? And they’d say Florida. Ask them who’d they rather beat second? And they’d say, Miami
Coach Bowden: Yes. Jason: Can you tell me a little bit the difference between those feelings between ‘93 and ‘99 or did it kind of feel like the same thing? Coach Bowden: Well, ‘93 was our first National Championship. Now, that was during the time that we were in the top four actually fourteen years in a row. We came out second one year, we came out third, we came out fourth, we came out second again, came out third about five years we’d come out as second or third, but we never won a National Championship. What did people say? “They can’t win the big one; they can’t win the big one; they can’t win the big one.” So, we finally won it in ‘93. That kind of got the monkey off our back. It didn’t seem like that much, except now they can leave me alone. In ‘99, though, we were first in the nation every week. At the beginning of the season we were number one, all during the season we were number one, and we finished number one. That’s the only team that ever went wire to wire number one. Now that felt more like an accomplishment, you know, than that first one, but they all feel good!
Jason: Coach how do you feel that ‘99 team would stack up against Jameis Winston, and this team that just won it?
Coach Bowden: It would be a good game. I think it would be a heck of a ball game! We had some great players on that team. Chris Weinke won the Heisman and we had some other great football players on that team. But this current team at Florida State, they won so easily this year, it’s hard to say. It’s just hard to say. They may be the best team ever here.
Jason:
Now were you at the National Championship game, Coach, or where did you watch it? Coach Bowden: I was there; I did the coin toss. As soon as that was over, I went back to my hotel and watched the game. I can’t watch it when I’m standing around because people want to talk, or they want me to meet their grandma -- something to distract.

Alright, coach, here’s my last question for you OK? Now, I don’t want you to hang up on me but since I

That’s a good thing but you know as a gator fan, I see all the hype and I see all the rivalry stuff. How does that play out for you? Do you really see the Gators as a big-time rival, and do you plan differently for them or what does that do to you guys?
Jason: Oh yeah. Coach Bowden: Coaches will say, whichever team is the best -- that’s who’s you’d rather beat.
Jason:
Well coach, that hurts my feelings a little bit, but I can understand your position there on that.
Coach Bowden: [Laughs.]

“Look Mommy! It wooked!” ere’s the scene: My son had recently started speech therapy. He knew he had some challenges with his speech even though he was only three years old. On this particular day my wife had made him an English muffin for the first time in his life. When he heard that it was an “English” muffin his brilliant threeyear-old mind assumed that eating it would make his speech automatically better. “What dis?” he asked. “An English muffin,” my wife replied. “An Ingwish muff ’n?” he asked. “If I eat it, wiw I tawk betta?” “I don’t know, give it a try,” my wife answered. He went on, “Wet’s see. Mommy, watch.” Then, in the professional tone of a three-year-old evening news anchor he announced, “Hewoh dare.” Immediately after his declaration, he took a bite of the English muffin. After chewing and swallowing his muffin he again stated, “Hewoh dare,” using the exact same three-year-old version of an evening news anchor as before. But, this time his eyes lit up, his face was filled with surprise, and he gasped, “Mommy! It wooked!” It is amazing to me that even at the age of three my son recognized the importance of good communication. Of course, to him, good communication meant that his speech was clear so that others could understand what he was saying. Unfortunately, it seems that many adults have not quite reached this same conclusion. Even though most people inherently know that good communication is important to any relationship, especially their marriage, many do little or nothing to intentionally improve this very important skill. In a recent poll, almost all (97%) who rate their communication with their partner as excellent are happily married, compared to only 56 percent who rate it as poor. This particular poll concluded that a couple’s ability to communicate is the single most important contributor to a stable and satisfying marriage. In fact, it is the lifeblood of marriage. One of the challenges is that many people misunderstand what communication really is. Typically, when one thinks about the meaning of the term communication, the idea of “talking” immediately comes to mind. But, our actual words are a mere fraction of our total communication. In fact, experts tell us that only 7 percent of our communication is the words we say. Nonverbal communication, such as body language, facial expressions, and how engaged we are accounts for 58 April

percent of the total message. Our tone of voice makes up the final 35 percent. This is why when you ask your wife if everything is okay, and she responds by saying, “I’m Fine!” you instinctively know that indeed, she is NOT fine, and everything is NOT okay. Only 7 percent of her communication said she was fine. The other 93 percent was screaming something is definitely wrong. This is why when you tell your spouse you are listening but you never take your eyes off of your flappy bird game, the laptop, or the big screen TV, he or she might have a hard time believing you. This is why when you tell your mate they are the most important thing in your world, but you stay out every evening doing your own thing, you are actually sending a message with your actions that completely contradicts what you were attempting to communicate with your words. Communication is not merely sending messages for another person to hear. Rather, it is a two-way sending and receiving of messages. The foundation of good communication is rooted in your ability to listen to your mate first; not just to the words that she says, but to the feelings and emotions of their experiences. Real communication is rooted in understanding the message behind the words. Stephen Covey said that one of the “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” is to seek first to understand and only then to be understood. There is only one way to begin to be able to do that–and that is to listen. In fact, I would say that listening is by far the greater portion of good and effective communication. The wisdom of the Scriptures revealed this secret centuries ago, “Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry” (James 1:19 GNT). Generally, the largest barrier to effective listening is our own need to be heard. As a result, all sorts of ineffective communication styles creep in -- interrupting, defensiveness, formulating responses before the other is finished sharing, and so forth. The best way to make sure you are heard and understood is to slow down and really listen to your mate. Once your spouse feels like you have heard and understand he or she will naturally be more open to listening to you. It is the principle of sowing and reaping. “But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully” (2 Cor 9:6 NKJV). Try it. Give your spouse the gift of really listening and understanding them. When you do, I’m convinced you, too, will say, “Look! It wooked!”

ecently, we had several of our residents requesting assistance and advice in preparation for filing their taxes. In all these cases, we request that these individuals always seek qualified assistance through tax attorneys and accountants. Cleveland has various fine resources to choose from. With regards to what can be deducted on one’s taxes, it is always beneficial to ask the advice of a professional. Through the internet as well, one is able to research tax information, and there is a full list of allowable medical expenses on the IRS web site (www.irs. gov). “Nursing services performed in a nursing home, an assisted living facility, or similar care facility are also deductible expenses if the person is principally receiving care for medical reasons. However, if a person is staying at April a nursing home, an as2014

sisted living facility, or similar care facility only for custodial reasons, only medical expenses are deductible; in this instance meals and lodging are not deductible. A member of that facility should be able to state what percentage of care received qualifies as medical care. Similarly, nursing services performed at home are deductible expenses. If the patient is chronically ill, certain maintenance and personal care services are also deductible.” Tax accountant Shibu Joseph also gives some important advice: A) You must itemize deductions to write off medical expenses, and only 1/3 of taxpayers itemize on their tax returns. B) Medical costs are deductible only after they exceed 10% of annual gross income. So if your AGI (adjusted gross income) is $50,000, the first $5,000 of unreimbursed medical expenses doesn’t count toward one’s tax deduction.
It is my personal opinion, that people who can afford their own tax attorneys and accountants should utilize the information they glean from these professionals wisely, in an effort to assist them in minimizing their taxes. hen the life that you have known begins to slowly fall apart and your dreams are shattering right before your eyes,What do you do? You fall to the ground weeping and crawl aimlessly on your knees to pick up one piece of your life over here and crawl the other way picking up one piece of a dream over there, trying to fix and hold on to what you have prayed for, fasted, took classes, sought counsel for each night for years. However, it didn’t work. I still had to let go. You see even after all those years of fighting and praying my marriage didn’t make it. I would say to myself, “I’m a Christian this shouldn’t be happening to me” and oh the shame, the pain, the uncontrollable urge to cry, the loneliness, the feeling of God can’t use me now, my life was over, the anger over unanswered prayers, the pain of my children, the deep, deep, darkness of depression. Yes, I would say I was stuck in a deep, dark, and lonely hole with not even seeing a way out, until about a year and a half later, through prayer, classes, and counseling. God began to revile to me new dreams on the horizon. Something deep inside of me said that my life wasn’t over and God still had a plan. So I picked myself up or should I say God picked this messed up, broken, little girl up and wiped my tear stained face, straightened my hair, dusted off my knees, and He spoke and said, Go and share your story. There are people who need to hear about Me. I looked up at Him in weakness and said, “Yes Father I will go for You.” and I will tell as many people as I can about You. That’s when God showed me how to deal with and conquer my depression and take back everything saApril tan had stolen from me one step of faith 2014

at a time. He told me to find Him in each day even in the smallest thing. So I began my road to healing on February 4th 2014 when I began sharing a “Glimpse of Heaven” on my Facebook page. Here is my very first post to healing: A small glimpse of heaven to me today.. I was helping a child read today and she was coming up shy of meeting her goal each time she read and I could tell she was getting a little discouraged. So I looked at her with a smile, adjusted her hair back in a head band and fixed her glasses. Then I said, “You look so beautiful today! I said to her, " I believe in you. Do you believe in yourself?” She shook her head yes with a smile! Okay let’s read and pass your goal.... And she began to read and as she realized she was getting close to PASSING her GOAL UP she had the biggest grin on her face as she was reading!! She passed her goal and we celebrated with hugs. I can't stop thinking about this little girl’s smile!!!Then after an over whelming response to others hunting me down at work, in my neighborhood, through text, church, and around town just to tell me how much my posts are helping them and encouraging them, I received this overwhelming joy inside, a smile in my heart that I haven’t felt in a long while, I concluded “If I had to go through all that pain so I could share about my God and help others it was all worth it. The feeling I get inside when I help someone else is priceless and my depression begins to diminish and that is when my healing will begin to take place. This is all just a “Glimpse of Heaven” to me.

How To Have An Awesome Life Even When Life’s Not So Awesome By Darren Schalk
Sometimes life isn’t all that awesome.
I
was reminded of this awful truth when I woke up to a house without power this morning in 4 degree temperatures. Oh, and my pipes were frozen, so no heat, no water, and no power. Normally this would send me into total-Darren-freakout-panic mode. My wife says I’m a bit of a pessimist when it comes to these types of situations, or any situation for that matter. My brain tends to see everything that’s not there. I like to see what’s coming, so I analyze every possible scenario before any of them actually play out. I’m always looking past what I see and trying to see what I can’t see.
As of this moment, my heat still isn’t functioning quite right, and despite my best efforts wandering through my crawlspace with a hairdryer, my pipes are still frozen. But I’m still not in total-Darren-freak-out-panic mode, because I’ve handed God the controls of my life. And by doing so, I’ve found that I can have an awesome life even when life isn’t so awesome.
Wow, just writing that makes me realize why my wife gets so annoyed with this trait. So, yes, I was seeing busted water pipes, a flooded crawlspace, huge plumbing bills, no heat for a week, a whole new heating system, and a fridge full of unusable food. But, while I would normally be in total-Darren-freak-out-panic mode where I begin pacing the house in a space daze while ignoring every word spoken in my direction, I didn’t freak out at all. And I had to ask myself: “Darren-Self, why aren’t you pacing the house and ignoring your loved ones right now?” And then I realized….I’ve spent the last month writing about faith on my blog. And I’ve been pondering what faith means and how it plays out in everyday life. And suddenly, the faith I’ve been writing about actually kicked in. Sure, I woke up to some possibly scary scenarios, but God’s in control of my life because I’ve handed God the controls of my life. So now it’s time to simply trust Him. And when I’ve done that in the past, I’ve never been disappointed. So, instead of blankly wandering the halls of my semi-freezing house while ignoring my children’s cries for socks and blankets, we all packed up and headed to the nearest Starbucks at 7a.m., who unknowingly served as our Master Bath for the morning. (Thanks Starbucks!)And guess what? Our power came back on a while April later, so disaster #1 averted.

hile on my morning walk, enjoying the bright sunshine, the peaceful atmosphere and spending time with God, what was a clear path the day before, is now blocked with a huge fallen tree. The path was completely blocked to the point that I had to turn around and walk back the way I came. I must say that had there been a way for me to go around, I would have attempted it, but there was not. Call me stubborn, but I do not like detours! Often in my life, I have had my path planned out and started on my journey, only to come upon a huge obstacle that brought me to a screeching halt. You know times when your plans and God’s plans are not quite lined up. I would love to say that during those times I have obediently turned around and followed the path He set before me. But my human desires sometimes get in the way and I feel that I must continue on the path I have set before me. It is more familiar, I know what to expect on this path. I have walked it many times so I find it easier and less demanding. This is a safe path without any risks. I also do not like taking risks! In the past few months, I have come upon a time in my life when God has placed a huge tree on my safe, familiar path. At first I looked for ways to go around it. It would require a little more work, but I could stay on my path. There have been many times I have worked myself to exhaustion in order to keep with the familiar. I do not like change or the unknown either! But then the Lord spoke to me and told me that sometimes a detour is not always a bad thing. Think about it; you are driving down the highway headed for your destination when you see a Detour sign telling you of a different route to take due to road work. Now you can stay on the main road if you like, but you may be there for a while waiting on progress to move you along little by little. Will you ever get there? Yes, eventually you will get to your destination, it may take longer, but you can still arrive. But, what if you take the detour? Maybe a road you have never been on before, the scenery is new to you; it is actually a very pleasant change of scenery. The detour could be longer or shorter, but regardless‌you will most likely arrive at your destination sooner than if you had stayed on the road with construction moving at a snail’s pace. While on this detour you discover new places of interest you never knew were there, new places to explore, new beauty to see. This is when you realize that God has not placed a detour in your life as a form of punishment. He has simply offered you an alternative route with better opportunities, new adventures, or just a change of scenery. It is up to us whether we see the detour and keep going the way we have been or step out in faith and travel April a different path.

This is where I am now-- a detour in my average, ordinary, riskfree life. This is an opportunity to step out in faith and trust that God has new adventures for me if I will just follow His leading. Certainly I can say I have never moved farther than 30 miles from one location to the next in my lifetime. I have never abandoned the stability of my loving family, my job, and my cozy little hometown to take a detour without knowing the final destination. I would have never imagined that this small, hometown girl would one day pack it all up, say tearful goodbyes, and follow the unknow, but I am enjoying the scenery on this new path and look forward to the new opportunities that God has in store!

I
t has been five years on March 11 since I received the news that I was diagnosed with breast cancer. One week after receiving this news, I underwent a double mastectomy. Then, the very next evening after my surgery, my husband found out that he had lost his job of thirteen years. Later on, in the fall of that year, our youngest son began having behavior issues. During the following fall, he was diagnosed with developmental delay. This last fall, he was diagnosed with ADHD. You could say that the last five years haven’t been the best years for my family. Every year since then, we have been struggling in various aspects of life. However, despite these circumstances, my family and I are not just surviving but thriving even though these last five years have been the most difficult and challenging years of our lives. You may ask why I say that we’re thriving if the last few years have been the most difficult. This is because with 2009 being the most challengApril ing and difficult of the

five years, there wasn’t a time that I didn’t see God’s hand there getting us through it. Even though I have recovered for the most part from the surgeries and the chemotherapy, we still struggle at times financially due to the decrease in income in our household. However, we are all “alive and kicking” still. A couple of weeks ago, God spoke to me that He was giving me consolation. Then, all of a sudden, consolation began pouring out from everywhere! You wouldn’t believe all the consolation I have been getting. It actually began the week prior to the word that I received and is still going on today. There are various accounts in the Bible of people of God waiting for their breakthrough. For example, Joseph waited 13 years, Abraham waited 25 years, Moses waited 40 years, and Jesus himself waited for 30 years. My wait of five years looks measly compared to these numbers. These individuals waited through the difficult times, and eventually they came out of them. Of all the lessons God is wanting me
to learn through this experience, the one that I know for sure I am learning is patience and how to wait on God-trusting in Him that He knows what He is doing. He has His reasons that I cannot see as to why my family and I are still waiting. Just because I cannot see doesn’t mean that He is not working behind the scenes. He is always at work on our behalf. If you look in the story of Naomi, she lost everything but God sent her Ruth; through Ruth, they benefited from Ruth meeting their kinsmen redeemer, Boaz. Then, by Ruth marrying Boaz, they were the great grandparents of King David. Most likely, none of this would have happened if Naomi hadn’t lost her husband and two sons, forcing her to return with Ruth to her native land. So, even though the waiting is tough, I am encouraged in knowing that God is in control and what God has for me and my family ahead is going to be greater than all that we have lost to get there.

ge has caused him to be bent over, but he still stands up tall. The lines on his face are symbolic of the lines in his story of a life well-lived. He is a giant of a man I look up to with utmost respect. Robert H. O’Bannon, PhD, is a remarkable person loved by all who know him. Whether called Dr. O’Bannon, Dr. Bob, Dr. O, Brother Bob or simply Bob, he is never at a loss for words and he never meets a stranger. He exhibits the fruit of the Spirit, especially kindness, goodness and gentleness. He also manifests joy by his smiling face and funny jokes and sounds that amuse children as well as adults. He is a wise encourager. For the more than thirty years that I have been privileged to be around him – at church, in his home, or at lunch – he has always callsed me, “young man.” Even as I have aged he still uses that label. With that sparkle in his eye, he makes me feel at ease, regardless of the reason he may have in mind for using the phrase. He is a giant in many ways. Though not as a student, I have been in his classroom and seen his command of his subject and the respect it drew from his students. His passion about what he teaches causes his students to give him their full attention and they seem to realize it is an honor to sit under such a gifted teacher. He has been a farmer,

a medical lab technician, a scientist, a college professor, an advisor, a speaker, a preacher, a missionary, a groundskeeper for our local church, a husband and father. He has been an untiring hard worker who provided for the multiple kidney transplants needed by his beloved wife Nancy. They both have hosted untold numbers of events on their farm. They are known and respected for their hospitality to many people, especially missionaries from around the world. Their older son Randy shared some of the lessons he learned growing up in this missionary home. “You learn to love America, but you also learn to love the world.” As he described times of sharing with soldiers in a foreign culture and meeting the needs of others, he said, “You learn what you give is more important than what you need.” Bob is a defender and spokesperson for the unborn. A staunch supporter of prolife, he stands firm in his convictions and advances the cause of New Hope Pregnancy Center. He is an expert on, and champion for, creationism and he eloquently debates the Biblical basis for the beginning of life. He is not afraid to speak up and speak out as he takes on this challenge with confidence being fully qualified to address any audience. The light carried by the torch of students who have been influenced by his teaching, encouraged by his counseling, lightened by his jokes and otherwise driven to succeed, shines brightly around the world. Only in eternity will it be known the full effects of this one gentle giant. My life was impacted by this man many years before I met him
or knew anything about him. Early in our marriage, my wife and I were privileged to take a travel to the Holy Land. A friend of mine who was a student at then Lee College told me about Dr. O’Bannon and his years spent as a missionary in that part of the world. My friend said he would ask him if he would share some information with us about Israel. Before the days of computer access to the internet and World Wide Web, my friend sent us brochures and literature from Dr. O’Bannon that were priceless in helping us prepare for our trip. Years later when I told him about his help, he had no recollection of it. To him, it was just a minor step in his lifetime, but to us it was a huge help from this gentle giant. We were helped immensely at the time and greatly blessed later to get to know him personally and learn more about his kind, gentle spirit. By the way, I returned the loaned documents. Bob O’Bannon, I may not have been in your classes to prepare for medical school to change the world for good for the Kingdom, but I have been a student of yours and have observed your life. I have been challenged in a positive way to be my best, to give without complaining and to be faithful in the Kingdom. You are, my friend, a gentle giant. Without peer.

Growing Up DUGGAR by Bethany Ruckman “We simply honor what God wants our family to do. It doesn’t mean that what we do is for everybody. God convicts different people of different things at different times.” This statement from the four oldest Duggar girl’s (Jana, Jill, Jessa, and Jinger) newly released book, Growing Up Duggar: It’s All About Relationships, is exactly what makes this very popular family admired by so many. Modest dress, no television, homeschooling, no dating, and 19 children might not be for everyone, but it is however, for the Duggars. In the book, Growing Up Duggar, the girls share personal stories and tips others could apply in the following areas of life: relationship with self, relationship with parents, relationship with friends, relationship with boys, and most importantly relationship with God. I was simply honored to have the opportunity to sit down with the Duggar girls to hear what they had to say about the release of their new book. GNCM-What is your biggest wish for yourself and for your future families? (The other girls point to Jessa to answer this one) Jessa- Our desire is to always have God at the center of our lives and our future family’s lives. Family is so important to us, so staying close as a family is always a goal. GNCM- In the future do any of you plan to be a stay-at-home mom or do any of you think you will possibly work outside of the home? Jessa- I’m sure it will be a little different for each of us, but yes that is our desire. Jill and Jana are working now but I’m sure one day we will all end up being home with our kids.
Jessa- It really is a good accountability because I know that I have a lot of young girls looking up to me. Really, it has been fine so far. Our film crew really is like family because they’ve been such a big part of our life. Actually, it does get a bit awkward on dates though, (laughing) it’s like wow this is romantic. GNCM- Do you feel a lot of pressure when making decisions because so many young people look up to you as a role model? Jinger- To keep everything in perspective we keep in mind that ultimately God is always watching us. Yes, so many others are watching us but most importantly God is watching and that is why we go to Him with our decisions. GNCM- In the book you mention that your parents spend one on one time with each of you weekly, and you listed some of the questions that they often ask as conversation starters. One question was “ If you could as God one question what would it be?” What would you say to that question right now? Michelle- Oh I have a list of answers for every one of those questions listed in the book. I think often through the years they have answered that they would want to know what God wants them to do with their life. Jessa- Sometimes when we get asked that question it would be during a time when we might be a little frustrated with a sibling. Our parents always encourage us to seek what God could be teaching us from this situation. So we might ask Him, God what could I learn from this? GNCM- Is there anything that you would like to say to any young ladies today?
GNCM- What is one thing you all hope that your readers come away with after reading your book? Jill- We hope that our readers would see Jesus throughout the whole book. That’s one reason that we didn’t just designate one chapter on relationship with God, because we thought it was important for him to be throughout every chapter and included in all the relationships. For instance, we feel that if a girl, or anyone for that matter, can accept themselves for what God created and intended for them to be, then that sets the foundation for all the other relationships that we discuss in the book.
Jill- Yes, I want to encourage young ladies to try and hold a standard of Godliness and purity. In the book we have a list of guidelines with qualities that are important when looking for a future spouse. We encourage girls not to just have a list of qualities they are looking for in a guy but to turn that list around and hold herself to those same standards. Think about what kind of girl is a godly man looking for. Don’t just sit around waiting for that guy though. Strive to be all that God wants you to be by serving others. A guy doesn’t want a couch potato anyway. Well, maybe, but probably not.
GNCM- Jessa, how has it been entering into a courtship with so many people watching?
GNCM- (Directed to Michelle) Great job mom, you must be so proud.
Jill, Jinger and Jana- (giggling) yeah how has it “Ben”? Jessa is in a courtship with a guy named Ben.

I heard a statement from the Lord this week concerning a friend, God said ‘derailed destiny.’ Strong words, I thought. I began to ponder that statement; derail a destiny. Not fully understanding what caused a derailment, I decided to do some research. I looked online to find out what caused a train to derail. I discovered that it isn’t as I thought; it isn’t that something on the track causes the derailment. Actually, studies show that a train can move 4,000 lbs off the track without ever derailing or even slowing it down. Additionally, there are two causes of derailment; one is going too fast and the other is failing to apply the brakes when needed. Pretty simple. tarting April 12, a group of runners from Cleveland will be taking their love of the sport to the next level by committing to run over 1,000 miles from their hometown to Boston, Massachusetts. In what is being billed as the RUN NOW Relay, the group is tackling the monumental feat as a way to show support for the victims of the Boston bombings and to call attention to the benefits and camaraderie of the running community across the country. “In 1836, Davy Crockett and 65 other Tennesseans signed ‘an oath as volunteers’ to defend and support their brothers and sisters in Texas at the Alamo,” stated Dr. Fred Garmon, one of the event organizers and participants who leads the nonprofit organization, People for Care and Learning. “Those volunteers traveled nearly 1,000 miles to extend that ‘volunteer’ support in person at the Alamo. Now, 177 years later, two dozen Tennessee men and women have signed another ‘oath as volunteers’ to support their brothers and sisters in Boston after the tragic marathon bombing last April.” The group is raising money along the way to help the victims impacted by the bombing on April 15, 2013. They have identified two charities and have a goal to raise at least $50,000 to support them. “It’s a Tennessee tradition as ‘volunteers’ to serve our fellow citizens in their time of need,” said Matt Ryerson, another event participant and director of the local chapter of the United Way. “The volunteer spirit is alive and well in Tennessee as these runners have committed to an epic eight-day relay run from Cleveland to Boston.” The plan includes a community-wide send-off on the morning of April 12, 2014 and arriving April 20, the day before the 2014 Boston Marathon. The runners will run nonstop, 24 hours a day through eight states and over 1,000 miles, hitting large metropolitan areas such as Knoxville, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City. They will also travel through small communities along the course, with the official halfway point being Madison, Virginia, with a population of 210. “The adventure is a draw, but more importantly it is a platform in which to raise awareness about the on-going issues those victims continue to face April

and an opportunity to raise funds to support those victims and the people of Boston,” Ryerson said. The genesis of the run began with a small 5K Fun Run organized by a local group of runners, self-named the “Half Warriors” for their commitment to participating in half marathons. The 5K was conceived to draw attention to the Boston bombing with a goal of sending a little money to support the families in need. The goal for that event was $500, but a larger-than-expected crowd turned out and the event earned four times that amount. In a conversation between planners emboldened by the success, someone jokingly suggested, "You know what would be really cool? If we ran this to Boston and handed the check to them personally!" The group ultimately mailed that check, but an idea was born. The relay team consists of runners in their late 20s to early 60s, males and females, and at varying levels of physical abilities. All have signed a commitment form and paid $400 each toward participation in the epic event. In addition, all have committed to a regimen of training for the course, which will demand at least one hour of running for seven consecutive days from all participants.
No doubt about it, it will be challenging,” stated Tim Spires who took up running just five years ago. “We are all aware of the fact that from here to Washington is almost all uphill as we will trek through a lot of the Appalachian Mountains. Thankfully, we have a number of strong runners who can fill in the gaps for those who may need to take a longer rest between their portions of the course.” Spires said there are members of the team who are trained in nutrition and physical fitness, as well as in the medical fields. The RUN NOW Relay team has selected two partner charities where 100 percent of all funds raised will go the One Step Ahead Foundation (onestepaheadfoundation.org), which has committed to serving the children who suffered amputations because of the Boston bombing and Dream Big! (dream-big.org), a Boston-based nonprofit serving underprivileged girls, through sports. “Sports and running are the driving force behind the entire project,” Ryerson said. The RUN NOW relay team has received sponsorships that will cover much of the travel costs and they have committed to cover the rest of the costs on their own to allow 100 percent of donations to go to their partner charities. Among the sponsors are Don Ledford Chevrolet of Cleveland, which is donating four vehicles for the trip, Panera Bread, which is providing meals for the runners along the course, locally-owned Cooke's Food Store providing snacks for the runners, Holiday Inn Express, which is providing a launch site and pre-event party as well as connections to other Holiday Inn Expresses along the route for housing needs. In addition, a documentary team has been following the RUN NOW group in an effort to record the adventure. “I have been in fund-raising for most of my professional career and I have never seen donations come this easily,” Ryerson related. “People have responded so generously and have all been willing to be involved.” To learn more about the event or to donate, visit www.runnowrelay.org. t was a dream come true. I could not believe I was going to be able to go to the Quebec Region of Canada and hunt black bear. As a child and teen, I read all the Field and Stream and Outdoor Life magazine stories I could possibly find about hunting in Canada. The deep thoughts, dreams, and desire of hunting deer, grouse, moose and the ultimate -- black bear came flooding back within me. After a 14-hour flight from Alabama to Toronto we puddle jumped to North Bay. From there we drove by truck another 4 hours to Camp Grassy Narrows in Moffet Quebec. This great camp caters to fishermen and hunters alike bordering on Lake Simard. There we joined the Grassy Narrow Outfitting Crew for our hunting and fishing adventure. It was seven days of straight bear hunting. Success was possible due to seeing the present hunters leaving camp with great results. But this was all new to me. New place, new rules/guidelines, new weather, new speech, and long sits waiting for bear. We were permitted to hunt over baited sites in 10’-15’ ladder stands. Baits were about 30 yards from the stands. The Canadian forest was made up of towering Paper Birch and Douglas Firs. For many of the stands, we had to travel by boat across the lake and then by 4 wheeler on a gravel logging road for about 30 minutes. The scenery was beautiful. On the road you would see Moose tracks and water drippings where they exited the water to cross the road. Grouse dustings were in the dirt curbs, but what got our attention were the massive bear droppings that were noticeable on the road as we traveled. As we settled in our cabin, we were instructed that hunts would begin at 2:00p.m. and hunt til 10:00p.m. It did not get dark until 10:00pm. During the mornings, we could fish from daylight until noon or until lunch was served. Day #1 –- 6 The saying goes, “stay put and he will come.” After logging in 48 hours (6 days) in the same stand, the bear would only hit the baits at night. It was beautiful scenery but menacing. The new-found experience of black flies was pestering trying not to let them bite and make you move which would scare the bear. Full body coverings were needed -- especially around your face. From 2:00p.m. until 5:00p.m. when the sun

was at its hottest was the toughest but as it began to drop behind the treetops a cool breeze brought relief. I decided if I could sit that long and that still deer hunting in the states, I would become a great hunter. Whew it was tiring. Day # 7 was it. The guide decided to move me to a very remote stand about 8 miles across the lake and two miles up the Owatta River. Remote was the key word. As I was dropped off at the rivers edge. I followed a small foot path about 300 yards to a ladder stand facing a bait site. The guide freshened the bait site and off he went back to the boat. It was 3:00p.m. It was beautiful weather for about two hours. Grouse were strumming on a nearby fallen tree. Captivated by the old growth of this forest and seeing my many readings as a child come to life, I was happy just to be there. About 5:00p.m. a storm front moved through. Dark clouds, high winds, and then the thunder and lighting set in. For another two hours, lighting and winds made me make sure I was right with God. Really! There was a peace in His presence. I knew I could not get down because there was no where to go. I resolved if something did happen, I would rather be found in my stand. So I stayed put. Now five hours into the hunt heavy rain came in for another 2 hours. Then when you thought nothing else could go wrong, the rained stopped and snow set in for thirty minutes. I began to laugh. I knew no one would believe the diverse weather. I also knew when fronts

About thirty minutes before dark all weather moved through and a blue sky emerged. The sun’s rays shot through the treetops and limbs that added a heavenly sparkle were breath taking. A moose bellowed in the marsh to my left and another to my right by the river. Grouse were drumming everywhere. It was my little Shangri-La on earth. Thanking Christ for an amazing experience, I looked back to the bait site and a bear walked out 15 feet from the stand. I have never felt my heart or body shudder like that. The pulse rate in my head was pounding. Everything inside was screaming BEAR! Slowly I raised my rifle as the bear meandered to the bait site. Only fifteen minutes left of legal shooting light and then he turned broadsided. The moment had come. The trigger squeezed, the shot taken, a run into the thicket, a crash and the death moan. I took off my safety belt and climbed down after unloading and lowering my rifle. I crawled through the thicket and the harvest found. There lying on my bear I gave a prayer of thankfulness to God. Canada forever affected me as an outdoorsman and believer in Christ. That day I was blessed on earth as a hunter. That day I was also sure of my salvation and at peace with my Creator. Sleep of Surrender by Amie Kennedy ne of my favorite times of the day is when I go into my son’s nursery about thirty minutes after his bedtime. Usually by this point, he has fallen into his “surrender sleep,” with his arms slightly lifted above his head. As much as I enjoy our time together in the day, there is something so sweet about seeing my son in a state of complete peace and trust. As my son has become more aware of his surroundings, he has learned to resist the sleep that came so easily to him as a newborn. Now, instead of falling asleep wherever he finds himself, my son puts up a bit of fight before taking a nap. He wants to have his favorite blue blankie, his mom or his dad, and sometimes even a hand to hold. But eventually, after a little rocking, some lullabies, and gentle reassurances, our little boy gives up the fight and submits to the sleep that he so desperately needs. When you stop to think about it, we really can’t blame babies for needing lots of extra attention at bedtime. At some level, children seem aware of their helpless state. They want to make sure that someone will be there to protect them as they rest and to be ready to take care of them when they wake up. And as I watch my son even now taking a little snooze in his swing, I am reminded of my own daily fight to trust in God and submit my heart completely to Him. In Matthew 11:28, Jesus says, “Come to me all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (NKJV). We are promised this sweet gift of rest, yet like our children, we find ourselves daily resisting. And again, who can blame us? We live in this world of “fight or flight” where it seems dangers constantly abound. We feel we must scrap and stay vigilant to protect the people we love and the things we hold most dear. We worry if we lay down all our arms that there will be no one to guard over us or to help meet our needs. Yet, Psalm 37:3 begins “Trust in the Lord and do good; Dwell in the Land and feed on His faithfulness.” The Psalm April

continues in verse seven to say, “Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way” (NKJV.). We are told time and again by the Lord to be still. Can’t you just imagine Jesus desiring to hold us in His arms just as we hold our children? In the same way as I whisper to my son to remind him of my presence, I believe the Lord speaks over us as well. He is saying, “Rest my child, be still, be calm. I will watch out for you, remember that I am the God who does not slumber or sleep.” Yes, there are actions that we must take every day to partner with God. He calls us to be busy at work, with our families, and with our churches. However, we are also called to have peace in our hearts. We spend so much time resisting God’s rest just as our children fight the nap that is so crucial to their well-being. When I see my son’s arms over his head, I call this his “surrender sleep.“ He has let go of all his fears and concerns and found peace in his little body. Do we yield to God in the same way, or do we continue to fight? Let us find time every day to let God’s peace permeate our hearts through spending time in prayer and fellowship with Him. I believe He is willing to put our hearts at peace through many of the same ways that we parents help our children to find sleep. We must begin by laying down before the Lord the things we hold most dear. Then, as we nestle in His lap, let us choose to listen to the truth that He speaks through His word, and let go of the deception of the world. Zephaniah 3:17 says, “He will quiet you with His love. He will rejoice over you with singing.” (NKJV). Wow, isn’t that so comforting to think about God singing a lullaby of peace over our hearts! As a parent, my heart is filled with joy to see my son at rest. I can only imagine that this is just a small taste of the delight that God must feel when we experience that same child-like surrender. Oh how sweet to trust in Jesus; oh for Grace to trust Him more!
