Meet Jen Dimatatac FILIPINO NURSE BRINGS “JUST LIKE FAMILY” FEELING TO HOME CARE IN BURNABY WE ARE CANADA … Burnaby: City of Immigrants By Gary Wilson Almost all of us are immigrants or descendants of immigrants. Other than our indigenous neighbours, we came from some other place in the world. But now here we all are, some of us recently arrived and others, several generations ago. And as we live in this community, it’s essential that we have a sense of being neighbours and even friends with one another. To get there, it’s important to hear each other’s stories. That’s the intent of “We are Canada.” In this issue, we meet one of our neighbours … in hopes of becoming friends.

One of the qualities of many immigrants to Canada that is frequently misunderstood by many Canadians is the closeness of the immigrant family unit. Many immigrants come from cultures where a multi-generational family lives together or in close proximity, finding support from grandparents and experiencing a physical closeness among several generations. While this seems unusual to many of us who are just second or third generation Canadians, it’s something that clearly has multiple benefits and is a welcome contrast to the generational isolation that many families experience. While families in Canada often find themselves separated by hundreds or thousands of miles, so many immigrant families have the benefit of children spending time with and learning from grandparents. Working parents also gain the advantage of having their parents right there to care for their children and provide needed support. Of course, there are many immigrants who move to Canada and leave their extended families behind, along with that close physical and supportive bond. Such was the case for Jienelyn “Jen” Dimatatac, who came to

Canada in 2009. With her husband already moved here ahead of her in 2008, and his family already established here even earlier, there certainly was family and support for Jen in her new home. But her own family that she had been so close with growing up, were all back in the Philippines. Jen was born and raised in Bauan, in the province of Batangas, about 100 km south of the capital city of Manila. Hers was a fairly typical family that was not wealthy, but hard-working and close knit. It was very common for extended family and even neighbours to be together around the home whenever school or work did not demand otherwise. While not rich, the family enjoyed a wealth of mutual support, caring and close bonds. After graduating from high school, Jen was able to enroll at Far Eastern University in Manila. With the support and encouragement of her aunts who were living in the U.S., Jen was able to study nursing, and graduated with a B.S. in Nursing degree in 2006. She then worked in various nursing positions, including as an operating room nurse and a clinical instructor. The latter experience motivated her to pursue a Master’s Degree in Nursing, which she received from Golden Gate College in 2009. That year proved to be fairly life-changing for Jen as she was married in January, and then later, in August, she moved to Canada. It proved to be somewhat difficult, as the move left her quite homesick. While enjoying the safer, more secure Canadian culture, Jen missed the sense of community and family that she had known back in the Philippines. The isolation became particularly

WHAT’S ON!

acute when she gave birth to her children in the years that followed. Nevertheless, Jen adjusted to the Canadian lifestyle and over the next several years, became involved in home health care. Upon discovering that her nursing degree from the Philippines did not qualify her to become a Registered Nurse here in Canada, she enhanced her schooling at Kwantlen University and became an RN in 2014. She then worked as a parttime operating nurse while continuing in home care support. In 2018, after becoming very familiar with home health care work, and enjoying the help and support that she could bring to so many clients, Jen decided to launch her own business in that field. With the warm sense of family that she had grown up with, it was quite appropriate that she became connected with Just Like Family Home Care. In fact, Jen became their first franchise owner right here in Burnaby and New Westminster, as this home healthcare business began to expand! Since then, Jen has seen significant demand for her services, as she has expanded her reach into the Tri-Cities, Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge! This has allowed her to bring employment to many other home care workers. Most of the work involves supporting seniors who want to stay in their own homes, but there are many others her team works with who are disabled or recovering from injuries, as well as some seniors who live in care facilities but need additional support. Many family members are amazed at how her team members are even able to care for their parents suffering from dementia! Not surprisingly, this warm, compassionate woman has received many compliments from the family members of the disabled people and seniors she serves. It’s perhaps because Jen Dimatatac has a unique understanding of family and what it’s like to feel isolated from her family. But perhaps it’s more so because, to Jen and her team, the people they care for are treated “Just Like Family”!

NEW BUSINESS IN BURNABY By Gary Wilson

BURNABY WELCOMES BUY-LOW FOODS AT KINGS CROSSING The Edmonds area of Burnaby is seeing considerable development, and one of the newest stores to be welcomed on the scene is Buy-Low Foods at Kings Crossing. This shiny, new full-service neighbourhood grocery store offers 23,500 square feet of food selection, but also some terrific customer service! “As a proud part of your community, we are committed to providing you the very best shopping experience, right in your neighbourhood,” says store manager Mike Paré, who began welcoming the community August 26th to experience the variety, quality and real customer service the grocer is known for. There’s so many things to love about this store, including their real, live butchers! There’s a fully staffed Meat department with experienced meat cutters, ready to fill special orders. Next is a full-service Deli department with the best selections of local, organic and imported cheeses, a large selection of meats and ready-made salads, and a bounty of freshly-prepared sandwiches. Buy-Low also features a Produce section well stocked with fruits and vegetables, many of them from local farmers. Paré comments, “At Buy-Low Foods, we offer a large variety of locally grown ethnic produce, seasonal, exotic and organic products. We are not only dedicated to source local produce, we do the same throughout the entire store. We are proud of our LOCAL selection!”

Of course, we all like a bargain and Buy-Low specializes in that! There’s great deals offered in their weekly flyer that you can sign up for at buy-low.com, but when you come in, you’ll also see Manager’s Specials, Budget Saver Offers, Picks of the Day, and big package specials on meat. On top of that, you can check out the flyer’s WOW items that beat competitors’ prices on select items. “We are proud of our customer service focused team,” says Paré, “and look forward to meeting our neighbours in our newest location here in the heart of South Burnaby.” You’ll find the new Buy-Low Foods at Kings Crossing located at 7380 Edmonds Street. FINDING RELIEF FOR THE CHALLENGES OF VERTIGO A Burnaby therapeutics clinic suggests remedies to help those struggling to manage problems with vertigo. Have you ever felt like the room was spinning even if you weren’t moving? That’s vertigo. It happens when your brain tells your body that it’s off-balance when it isn’t. Frequent vertigo is a symptom of an underlying condition with the most common being benign positional paroxysmal vertigo (BPPV). This vestibular disorder occurs when deposits enter the semicircular canals in the inner ear. It’s not life-threatening, however it can cause extreme discomfort and even falls. Stroke, head and neck injuries, vestibular neuritis and Meniere’s disease can also trigger a whirling sensation or loss of balance. If you’re experiencing vertigo, there are a number of remedies you can try to relieve it. 1. TAKE GINKGO BILOBA Ginkgo biloba is a Chinese herb that offers many health benefits. A recent study1 by the International Journal of Otolaryngology found the popular supplement to be just as effective as prescription medication betahistine when treating vertigo. The herb alleviates dizziness by increasing blood flow to the brain and comes in liquid or capsule form. Consult your doctor before taking ginkgo biloba. 2. DRINK GINGER TEA AND ENOUGH WATER Some people find drinking ginger tea can help with the effects of vertigo. To make ginger tea, simply steep ginger root in boiling water for a few minutes. Feel free to add honey if you’re not a fan of the bitter taste.

Remember to drink between 8 to 12 cups of liquid daily as well. Dehydration, even mild dehydration, can trigger vertigo so it’s important to stay hydrated throughout the day. 3. TRY AROMATHERAPY Essential oils can’t cure vertigo, but they can ease symptoms associated with it like nausea and vomiting. Peppermint, ginger, lavender and lemon are the most popular types of essential oils for relieving symptoms. You can inhale them through an infuser or dilute them in a carrier oil before applying it on your skin. 4. SEE A PHYSIOTHERAPIST In Canada, it’s estimated2 up to 35% of adults aged 40 and older experience a vestibular problem at some point during their life. Many of these people are not referred to a physiotherapist, which is unfortunate as research has shown3 physiotherapy to be effective for treating vestibular issues such as benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), vestibular migraine and vestibular neuritis, a viral infection of the inner ear.

• Balance exercises: The goals of these exercises are to strengthen the vestibular balance system and to help patients gain confidence when walking or performing tasks while standing. • Gaze stabilization exercises: These exercises improve focus and are designed for patients who have trouble controlling their eyes, especially when their heads are in motion. • Repositioning techniques: BPPV is treated with repositioning techniques like the Epley manoeuvre. Physiotherapists can teach patients the manoeuvre so they can perform it on their own when a vertigo attack occurs. 1 www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4099171 2 balanceanddizziness.org/disorders-and-treatments/statistics 3 www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25514252

• Habituation exercises: Patients perform specific movements which cause light dizzy spells. The exercises increase in intensity over time so the body can build up a tolerance towards vertigo symptoms.

CELEBRATING REMEMBRANCE DAY DURING A PANDEMIC Just like so many things over the past many months, Remembrance Day will look different in 2020. Of course, there won’t be the parades, tributes, and services that we’ve experienced in past years. But that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate this important day in a meaningful way. Here are a few ideas to capture the significance of this day and honour those who have served our country. You can take your kids to one of the memorial sites to have some time to reflect and share. And to help with social distancing, it doesn’t just have to be at one of the two cenotaphs. It can also be at the Korean War Memorial in Central Park or one of the other memorials in Burnaby or throughout Metro What’s On! On! •• www.whatsonburnaby.ca www.whatsonburnaby.ca What’s

Vancouver. For a list of different locations, visit www.whatsonburnaby.ca/nov11. There are also simple things you can do on your own or with family. How about a reading of “In Flanders Fields”? Or perhaps you could read together a great book for kids of different ages, like Winnie’s Great War or The Eleventh Hour. Of course, you can always support our Canadian Legion by buying and wearing a poppy. Whatever you do, make sure that you take time, even during this year of pandemic, to pause at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month for a moment of silence to reflect on those who have sacrificed to keep Canada free. 27 2
