Set in the gorgeous Welsh countryside, just 2 miles from the historic town of Monmouth and the Wye Valley, lies the award winning Stonemill Restaurant. Handily it’s set in the grounds of Steppes Farm, which has 6 very luxurious cottages for those who wish to stay longer. Win – win we thought, as we set off to chat with restaurant owner Michelle Decloedt.

THE STONEMILL Michelle, tell us a bit about your background and what led you to setting up The Stonemill Well in 1996 my family acquired Steppes Farm which is now a small hamlet of six 4 star stone and oak beamed cottages offering B&B and self-catering holidays. In 2001 we created The Stonemill Restaurant, having converted a derelict 16th century barn within the grounds of the farm - keeping the oak beams and vaulted ceilings. I have a huge passion for food and for all aspects of the hospitality trade so setting up and running the restaurant has been a dream come true. It’s a beautiful restaurant – and looking around we can see a number of awards. Can you talk to us about your achievements? The Stonemill has been trading for 14 years. During this time we’ve been overwhelmed with the success of the restaurant and the positive feedback from our customers. We’ve gained

entry into all the major eating out guides, including Michelin, The Good Food Guide, Hardens and Time Out. In November 2006 we were delighted to be awarded two AA rosettes which we’ve maintained now for 9 years on the trot.

have our own luxury marquee within our grounds which can cater for up to 200 guests, and of course the restaurant which accommodates up to 60 guests. The Stonemill Restaurant is licensed for civil ceremonies - so we can offer the full wedding package if required.

What would you say makes your restaurant such a success? That would be our high standards; our dedication in sourcing the best, fresh, local produce; the hard work and commitment from all staff involved, and constantly listening to our customers. We’re avid supporters of all things fresh and seasonal, taking great care to source the best local suppliers. We have our own herb and vegetable garden and we make our own bread, pasta, ice cream & sorbets, jam & chutney. We understand you hold functions here too? Yes, we cater for various types of events from weddings to birthday parties. We

“ Beautiful surroundings, delicious food – and a place to lay your head; what more could you want? When you visit – remember to say that Wye Life sent you – oh, and that we recommend the lunchtime sharing platters (and the puds.)” 54
