Passionate about The Vale of Glamorgan

We are a small independent publisher. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. Vale Life magazine is written, designed and produced in the Vale of Glamorgan for the people of the Vale of Glamorgan.

Our philosophy

We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking: “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.”

Caveat emptor

Advertisers supply their own copy or artwork, and therefore Vale Life cannot accept any responsibility for disputes between advertisers and their customers. Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware.

Important you read this

We have made every effort to ensure that all information contained in Vale Life or on www.valelife.co.uk (or our social media streams) is correct and accurate. However, we accept no responsibility for any errors or omissions and can offer no compensation should we get it wrong. Please note that the opinions, thoughts, views or ideas expressed in articles contained in Vale Life are strictly those of the authors.

Nothing in this magazine (including adverts) may be reproduced in any shape or form (in whole or part) without the express written permission of the publishers. We take breach of copyright and theft of intellectual property extremely seriously and will sue at the drop of a croissant. You have been warned (nicely); ignorance is no excuse.

Subscriptions

Apologies, we are not accepting subscriptions at present. However, you can reserve a copy with some of our outlets across the Vale or read articles on www.valelife.co.uk

Missed the last issue?

We hold a small number of each issue in stock so if you do need a pristine copy, please telephone us or email jennifer@goodlifepublishing.co.uk. Hopefully we’ll have the issue you want (but we cannot guarantee it). Each back issue costs £10 including postage and packing.

Yes it’s free. Priceless actually! Vale Life is distributed free through a wide variety of outlets across Vale of Glamorgan and beyond and is given away free of charge on the understanding that we are happy for it to be lent, passed on, given to friends and generally read until it falls apart. At which point, you can recycle it and we’d be delighted if you did.

Green is good

The pulp used in the production of the paper Vale Life is printed on is sourced from sustainably managed Scandinavian tree farms and utilises an elementary chlorine-free bleaching process.

Calendar Girls

The women from Dinas Powys Women’s Institute posed for a 2025 ‘Calendar Girls’ style calendar in support of Cardiff and Vale Health Charity’s Breast Centre Appeal.

The calendar was launched at a coffee morning during Breast Cancer Awareness month. The group sold out their initial 300-print run within days and ordered a further print run to satisfy demand.

Twelve of the lovely ladies also attended the recent Gold Tie Gala Ball, where they managed to sell a further 40 copies – with all funds raised going directly to our Breast Centre Appeal. They were supported with sponsorship from local businesses and the assistance of Barry photographer Sian Lewis.

It’s time to celebrate! Vale Laser Clinic is turning 10, and founder Emma Griffiths couldn’t be more excited to mark this milestone. Over the past decade, her clinic has transformed countless complexions, introduced groundbreaking treatments, and built a loyal community of skin-loving clients.

VALE L ASER C LINIC TEN YEARS OF RADIANCE

Here’s everything you need to know.

Vale Laser Clinic is celebrating ten years! How has the clinic evolved over the years?

I can hardly believe it’s been ten years! What started out as a small, local clinic has now become a trusted destination for skin health and aesthetics. We’ve introduced cutting-edge technology, expanded our treatment menu, and built an amazing team who are just as passionate about skin as I am. It’s been an incredible journey!

What’s planned for the big anniversary celebration?

We’re throwing a huge party on July 3rd at the clinic and the adjoining pharmacy - and we’d love everyone to join us! It’s a chance to celebrate, thank our wonderful clients, and introduce some of the exciting new treatments we have coming.

What new treatments are launching at the clinic?

I think we’re always ahead of the curve when it comes to skincare innovations. We’re introducing some fantastic new treatments, including:

n Dermalux Flex LED Light Therapy

A powerful skin-boosting treatment that enhances collagen production, reduces inflammation, and gives skin a radiant glow.

n Buccal Massage

“Emma is bringing even more cuttingedge skincare solutions to St Athan.”

What do you believe makes Vale Laser Clinic different from other aesthetic clinics?

We’re not about quick fixes; we’re about long-term skin health. We take a science-based approach, combining medical-grade technology with tailored skincare solutions. Our Feed, Fortify, and Finish philosophy means we nourish skin from within, strengthen its barrier, and enhance results with expert treatments.

What are your most popular treatments?

Hmm, that’s a tough one!

Our Focus Dual HIFU & RF Microneedling is a huge hit for lifting and tightening the skin. Clients love SkinPen Microneedling for smoothing acne scars and improving texture. And of course, our Lynton Laser & IPL treatments remain the gold standard for tackling pigmentation, red veins, and unwanted hair.

“Whether you’ve been with us from the start or are just beginning your skin journey with us, we’re so grateful for your trust. Here’s to the next ten years of beautiful, healthy skin!”

What’s next for Vale Laser Clinic? We’re definitely looking forward to the party. It’s a real milestone for usand for me personally. If you know my background, you’ll understand just how much it means. We’re always evolving though. From introducing new technologies to expanding our skincare education, we’re constantly looking for ways to help our clients achieve their best skin. Our online shop is also growing, making it easier than ever to access professional-grade skincare from Environ and AlumierMD

How can clients book a consultation? It’s super easy! Clients can book online through our website or give us a call. Our consultations are just £20, and we take the time to analyse your skin, discuss your concerns, and create a tailored treatment plan for the best results.

“We’re not about quick fixes; we’re about longterm skin health.”

It’s been a whirlwind first year for The Red Lion in Bonvilston, and owner Michelle Jones wouldn’t have it any other way. This beloved local pub has cemented itself as a go-to spot for fantastic food, unbeatable hospitality, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere that keeps customers coming back for more.

T HE R ED L ION, BONVILSTON A PASSION FOR HOSPITALITY

Michelle’s journey is a fascinating one. She built an impressive career in the hospitality industry, working in highprofile roles such as Guest Relations Manager at St. David’s Hotel and personal assistant to the GM opening two Holland House Hotels, she took a break to raise her two children.

Later, she managed the Crematorium in Barry for seven years - a role she loved - before finally fulfilling her lifelong dream: running a traditional pub with character and charm.

Craig, Michelle’s husband, meanwhile, works in the steelworks in Tremorfa and is deeply involved in maintaining and improving the pub, ensuring that it retains its historic beauty while keeping up with modern standards.

A Culinary Delight

At the heart of The Red Lion’s success is its award-winning kitchen team. Head Chef is Evangelos with his wife Chrissy (assistant chef), and they lead a talented brigade, including sous chefs Nanou and the ever-popular Luke, representing Wales in the kitchen. Their menu is a showcase of passion, creativity, and quality, with everything homemade - including the sauces!

The most requested dishes? Expect nothing less than perfection with the Greek Mixed Grill, smash burgers, fish ’n’ chips, lamb shanks, slow-cooked pork belly with black pudding bonbon, succulent ribeye steaks, and, of course, Nanny Pat’s infamous “million calorie” cheesecakes!

Their menu is a showcase of passion, creativity, and quality, with everything homemadeincluding the sauces!

For Sunday Lunch lovers, The Red Lion’s offering is legendary. Guests enjoy perfectly cooked meats, crispy roasties, and as much rich, delicious gravy as their hearts desire. It’s so popular that pre-booking has become essential, use the QR Code to book now.

More Than Just a Pub

The Red Lion is more than a place to eat and drink; it’s a thriving community hub. Regulars like John and Jill - fixtures at the same table four nights a week - are part of the fabric of this historic establishment, which has been serving the Bonvilston community since 1748.

Michelle has worked hard to make the pub a social hotspot, offering themed nights (Greek Nights are a must-try!), music nights twice a month, a lively darts team, a French class, and even a book club and reading group.

A Summer Haven

The Simba Shack, a garden bar structure inspired by the pub’s Lion theme, has been a roaring success. Stocked with everything except draught beer, it’s a major draw during the warmer months. The Red Lion also hosts summer events featuring live bands and even a rodeo bull!

Family-Friendly Fun

We’re all about inclusivity, and that includes younger guests. Cub Club, in keeping with the Lion theme, ensures kids eat for free with a paying adult meal (or just £5 without one), making it a great spot for families. Plus, the pub is dog-friendly. Unfortunately, our dog Bailey passed recently, but local regulars include Beau and Kai. Doggy menu available, but also complimentary treats.

Celebrating One Year in Style

To mark their incredible first year, Michelle and Craig threw a huge anniversary party in February. It was a night of fantastic music, great food, and plenty of celebratory cheer! (see page xxx for photographs of the night)

Supporting Local

The Red Lion takes pride in sourcing ingredients locally, with meat from Douglas Willis, fish from Ashtons, Cardiff, and fresh produce from Rhoose Village Stores. Nanny Pat’s cheesecakes, Nico’s sticky toffee pudding, and Chrissie’s homemade crumble ensure that every dessert is made with love.

Booking & Contact

With 54 restaurant covers and high demand, guests are encouraged to book via the web app Guest Plan using a QR code. The pub is also available for private events, including weddings, engagements, and wakes.

The transformation of The Red Lion - from its exterior facelift (used to be grey, red before that) to its thriving events calendar - has made it a cornerstone of the Bonvilston community. As Michelle says, “This pub is my baby,” and it’s easy to see why.

For more details on upcoming events and bookings, visit The Red Lion - Bonvilston on Facebook or get in touch!

“The Red Lion is more than a place to eat and drink; it’s a thriving community hub.”

If you love music, good company, and a cosy atmosphere, the monthly Live Music Night at Hilary and Iain’s in Ogmore is not to be missed!

H ILARY & I AIN BY T HE SEA LIVE MUSIC NIGHTS

Held on the last Friday of every month, it’s an evening where musicians and music lovers come together for an informal, friendly jam session. This isn’t about professional performances - it’s about passion, practice, and sharing great music with like-minded people. In short, it’s light, it’s fun.

At a recent event, guests were entertained by talented Jeremy Hill and Kelly Wilson, the soulful sounds of Gwilliam Andrews on the flute, and Andrew Farmer, one half of Vale favourites, Me & Him. And, of course, not forgetting Iain himself, who plays a mean guitar! Whether you’re a seasoned player or just starting out, this is a space to join in, listen, or simply soak up the atmosphere.

Creativity has always been at the heart of Tracy Elizabeth Taylor’s life. A civil servant by day, she carved out time nearly a decade ago to pursue her passion for painting and interior design.

H EART TO A RT TRACY ELIZABETH TAYLOR

From shaping clay to shaping emotions on canvas, her artistic journey is a story of resilience, inspiration, and an ever-evolving love for colour and form.

We met Tracy at her studio in her home in Barry and she talked to us about her creative journey.

What do you do for a living?

I work as a civil servant but went parttime almost ten years ago to dedicate more time to painting and interior design. My first job was at a pottery, where I learned how to throw pots - perhaps an early sign of my creative spirit.

How long have you been painting?

Art has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. Encouraged by a supportive art teacher, I’ve been drawing and painting since childhood. I even have a pencil sketch from when I was eleven, done at my grandparents’ house in Builth Wells. It still makes me smile - especially because I misspelled “August” with three u’s!

Where do you paint? Do you have a studio?

I need my creative space to be messy, so a tiny garden shed just wouldn’t do. Now, I’m fortunate to have a dedicated studio at home, overlooking my small garden - a creative sanctuary where I can be as free (and as untidy) as I like.

How would you describe your art?

My style has evolved over time. From sketches and portraits to watercolours, I now focus on large, colourful abstract paintings - works that are recognisable yet expressed in a bold, impactful way.

What materials do you use?

Acrylic ink and alcohol ink are my goto mediums. I use water and movement rather than brushes, working exclusively on canvas.

What made you take up painting? Creativity is in my nature - whether designing interiors or painting, I’m always imagining how things could look with a little artistic touch. However, painting became especially important during difficult times. After losing my sister, it became a form of healing, leading me to set up my first garden shed studio. When my mother passed, I expanded into a larger space in my home, turning painting into both solace and necessity.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

The world around me - daily walks by the beach or through the woods, everchanging skies, and bursts of colour in nature. I never paint directly from a photo but rather from the images and feelings imprinted in my mind.

Who do you admire as an artist?

I love visiting galleries and discovering new and inspiring artists, but if I had to choose one, it would be American artist Maria Kreyn. A friend introduced me to Kreyn’s work after seeing her commissioned paintings in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Shakespearean-themed theatre refurbishments. I admire the scale and emotional depth of her art.

How long does it take to complete a painting?

Patience is key. I usually work on two pieces at a time, allowing layers of ink to dry before adding more. A seascape might take months, while simpler pieces can take around four weeks.

How do you know when a painting is finished?

That’s the hardest part! I’ve ruined many pieces by adding “just a little more”. Over time, I’ve learned to step away, move the painting to another room, or take it straight to be framed - because once it’s varnished and framed, it’s final.

What does painting bring to your life?

Peace. It’s an escape, a way to lose myself for hours. It has helped me navigate grief, but it also brings moments of doubt and self-criticismpart of every artist’s journey. When I’m painting, the highs can be very high, and the lows are there to learn from.

Do you accept commissions?

I have taken on a few commissions but prefer to sell completed works. Since my process is intuitive, I can’t replicate pieces exactly but can work within a chosen colour palette. I’m painting for me. It’s pure. If someone loves my work as much as I do, then that’s lovely.

How does that process work?

For a commission, I discuss the client’s preferred colours, the intended space, and their favourite elements from my past works. I provide colour samples and sketches, but given the fluid nature of acrylic ink, the final outcome is always unique.

Where can people see your work?

My work is available to view at my home, on Instagram, and - depending on the response to my upcoming exhibition - on my own website in the future.

TRACY ELIZABETH TAYLOR

Exhibition announcement

Tracy’s paintings will be displayed at Penarth Pier Pavilion throughout July. There will be a private launch at The Gallery, Broad Street, Barry on the 28th June at 7pm and the exhibition will run from the 2nd July at Penarth Pier at the Pavilion for one month. Admission will be free and paintings will be available for sale.

What do you love about Penarth Pier and the town?

The Art Deco elegance of the pier, the stunning sea views, and the lively atmosphere of the nearby restaurants and bars - it’s the perfect setting for an exhibition.

For art lovers, collectors, and the curious, this exhibition is a chance to experience colour, movement, and emotion on canvas.

What truly sets it apart is its commitment to quality service - entry is limited to ensure every guest enjoys table service and a relaxed, exclusive experience.

A Warm Welcome from the Community Launching any new business comes with its challenges, but the response from Bridgend locals has been overwhelmingly positive. A thriving bar that people are proud to have in their town.

High street shopping is back in style! More and more people are finding that the online shopping experience just doesn’t compare to the joy of browsing in person. Let’s be honest - you’re not going to strike up a great conversation (or meet the love of your life) while clicking ‘Add to Basket’ on Amazon!

In Wales, in particular, there’s a growing trend of people stepping away from screens and rediscovering the social buzz of shopping in town. It turns out we love a good chat, a friendly face, and the unique character of our local high streets.

When designing your dream bathroom, many people assume that achieving a high-end, designer look requires a sky-high budget. However, with a little creativity and strategic choices, you can have a luxurious bathroom without breaking the bank.

YOUR DESIGNER BATHROOM I S W ITHIN R EACH

Here’s how you can elevate your bathroom’s style while keeping costs in check. “It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3!” says Xxx.

1. Focus on Statement Pieces

Instead of lavishly spending on every aspect of the bathroom, focus on a few key statement pieces that can create an instant sense of luxury. Our clients often choose freestanding Baths, Vanity units with a design flair, or a feature tile to bring statement pieces to life.

By opting for one or two high-quality items that stand out in your new bathroom, you can give the space a designer touch and stay within your budget.

2. Invest in Timeless Materials

Designer bathrooms often feature high-end materials, like marble, limestone and Terazzo. However, when it comes to tiles in particular, there are thousands of options available from brands like Mandarin Stone, Waxman’s ceramics and Clay & Rock, that mimic the look and feel of luxury materials for a fraction of the price.

“You can give the space a designer touch and stay within your budget.”

To ensure that your bathroom remains timeless, you could choose tiles in neutral tones as it will enable you to easily update your bathroom’s look in the future with accessories or a new coat of paint.

3. Update your Brassware and Accessories

One of the easiest and most affordable ways to add a designer touch to your bathroom is by replacing outdated fixtures and hardware. Swapping out old taps, towel rails, and showerheads for modern options can make a huge difference.

Xxx says, “A favourite amongst our clients, are the brassware collections from House of Piccadilly. Their range of taps, shower heads and accessories come in a number of different styles and finishes, including Brushed Brass, Matt Black and Brushed Gunmetal, which can give your bathroom an instant high-end feel.”

By carefully selecting the statement pieces in your bathroom, using neutral and timeless materials, and updating your brassware and accessories, you can easily give your bathroom a new lease of life without stretching your budget.

Explore the possibilities!

If you’d like to discuss your bathroom renovation options, get in touch with Bathrooms of Cowbridge today, by emailing sales@bathroomsofcowbridge. com or calling on 01446 484333 to book your first consultation. It’s free!

The latest addition to Penarth’s vibrant dining scene, Hickmans Bar & Restaurant is already earning a reputation for its outstanding food, stylish atmosphere, and top-tier service.

H ICKMANS BAR & R ESTAURANT: A TASTE OF EXCELLENCE IN PENARTH

Operated by Sean Murphy of Gastro Foods, Hickmans Bar and Restaurant is owned by Stuart Reid, and the two have collectively brought to life Hickmans, right in the heart of Penarth. We caught up with Stuart and Sean to discover more about what makes Hickmans tick.

What inspired you to open Hickmans in Penarth?

Stuart: As a Penarth resident, I saw an opportunity to bring a sophisticated yet welcoming dining experience to the area. Penarth has a renowned food scene, but we felt there was space for a venue that attracts everyone for an array of reasons - somewhere that locals and visitors alike could have a great experience.

Sean: Hickmans is part of the Gastro Foods group, which also operates The Old Swan Inn in Llantwit Major and The Sully Inn in Sully. We pride ourselves on delivering the exceptional quality that people expect from Gastro Foods, and it’s been fantastic to see how well the restaurant has been received so far.

What sets Hickmans apart from other restaurants in the area?

Sean: I believe Hickmans is all about the overall experience. Of course, the food is incredibly important, but we also focus on creating a warm and stylish atmosphere where every visit feels special – but this is also somewhere you’d want to return to and sample the new dishes on the rotational menu.

Stuart: At the heart of the restaurant is the stunning bar, which has equal importance to our restaurant, and we encourage visits to the bar, whether dining or not. The fabulous interiors, designed by an extremely talented local interior designer, blend sophistication with a strong sense of place. We made it a priority to work with local suppliers wherever possible - a reflection of our commitment to supporting the community.

Can you tell us more about the drinks offering?

Sean: As mentioned, Hickmans is just as much about the drinks experience as it is about the food. Between Graham, the General Manager and Sam, Bar Manager, they have a carefully curated selection of cocktails, alongside premium wines, craft beers, and artisanal spirits, ensuring the perfect pairing for any dish. We observed what people were ordering when we opened and built on those requests.

It feels very contemporary. It has a London feel about it.

Stuart: Absolutely, and it’s the details that matter. Guests will find beautifully appointed bathrooms – full of thoughtful touches that don’t go unnoticed. They feature luxury products from Goodwash Company, another proud local brand that we feel aligns with Hickmans’ values. We (I mean, I’m not great on social media!) also wanted ‘Instagrammable’ moments, hence the artwork and colours to provide that backdrop – but with a cosy and luxe feel!

Speaking of artwork, we love it, tell us more…

Stuart: We wanted the art to be more than just decoration - it’s about creating talking points and adding personality to the space. Bold, thought-provoking pieces are dotted throughout the space, sparking conversation and adding a contemporary edge to the venue’s elegant aesthetic. You should see how many people try to name all the notable people in the downstairs bar area!

Let’s get on to the open kitchen...

Stuart: I love an open kitchen. It allows diners to enjoy the theatre of live cooking - bringing transparency, energy, and a true connection between the chefs and guests.

Sean: We’ve got an incredible team in the kitchen, led by our Head Chef Rhys Apreda, so being open again is something we’re truly proud of. I’ve even stepped back into the kitchen myselfChef Whites on and all! Rhys brings real energy and creativity to the table, with a passion for crafting dishes that truly leave an impression. The menu has been thoughtfully curated, with every dish carefully executed. We aimed to create something for everyone—from beloved classics to signature dishes that rotate every six weeks, allowing room for innovation and giving our guests fresh reasons to come back. Above all, we’re committed to making sure no one is left out - quality and value are at the heart of what we do, with satisfying dishes that are both generous and accessible.

You have a rooftop area! That’s going to be lovely in summer.

Stuart: Our terrace is a hidden gem and a perfect sun trap - a fabulous space that comfortably accommodates up to fifty people. Whether you are after light bites from the newly launched menu or drinks under the stars, it offers a beautiful alfresco setting with the same stylish vibe as inside.

How would you describe the overall vibe at Hickmans?

Stuart: The ambience is cosmopolitan, welcoming, and effortlessly cool. The idea was always to strike the perfect balance between sophisticated and laid-back, I think we’ve achieved that! Sean: Our team are both attentive and unobtrusive, making sure guests feel comfortable and genuinely cared for. Our goal is for every guest to leave happy and ultimately, recommend us or choose to come back themselves. That’s the heart of our vibe: a winning combination of quality, service, and atmosphere.

Nestled in the heart of Penarth, En Vogue is the latest must-visit boutique for women who appreciate timeless style, premium brands, and exceptional customer service.

T HE VISION BEHIND E N VOGUE IN CONVERSATION WITH LIZ REID

We caught up with owner Liz Reid to learn more about her inspiration behind the boutique and what sets En Vogue apart.

What inspired you to open your boutique in Penarth?

My husband Stuart and I both live in Penarth, and we felt the town was crying out for a boutique that exudes quality. Women here appreciate beautifully made clothing, and we wanted to bring a selection of premium brands that cater to their lifestyle. Stuart has also opened Hickmans Bar and Restaurant, a fantastic new venue in the town serving outstanding gastro-style cuisine. It’s been a huge hit with true foodies, plus the ladies who lunch - many of whom pop over to En Vogue afterward to pick up a few wardrobe additions!

How has En Vogue been received by the community?

Unbelievably well! We stock a carefully curated selection of mid to highend brands, offering stylish daywear, elegant pieces for special occasions, and holiday or cruise collections. The response from both customers and fellow business owners has been incredibly positive, and we’re so grateful for the warm welcome.

What do you believe sets En Vogue apart from other boutiques?

Without a doubt, our customer service. My team and I have years of experience in retail, and we pride ourselves on offering a personal, welcoming experience. Whether customers prefer to browse independently or seek styling advice, we’re here to help. We love assisting women in finding pieces that flatter their shape, suit their lifestyle, and fit their budget.

There’s also a lovely personal history to the boutique - my mother-in-law owned Italus, a much-loved boutique in Wellfield Road, Cardiff. Now retired, many of her loyal customers have found their way to En Vogue, along with a wonderful new clientele from the Vale of Glamorgan and beyond.

Do you stock the same brands as Italus?

Quite a few – as they were, and still are, very popular, quality brands. But we have also included new brands which we know our clientele will love. These include Joseph Ribkoff, Foil, Monari, Olsen, Brave & True, Vilagallo, Alison Sheri, See Saw, Pomodoro, Fransa, Sahara, Nikki Jones, Guilty Beach Resort Wear, Tirelli, Lola Casademunt and Lotus Eaters. Our footwear brands include Paula Urban, Xti, Maria Lya, Carmela. We also have a gorgeous range of jewellery brands; Coeur de Lion, Uno de 50 and Enamel Copenhagen, which complete any outfit. In the heart of Pontyclun, there’s a quietly stylish revolution unfolding. The Tap End, already beloved locally for its bespoke bathrooms and tailored design expertise, has had quite the moment recently, with a viral buzz, glossy magazine features, and a prestigious Cardiff Life Award win all under its impeccably tiled belt.

DESIGN DREAMS AT T HE TAP END

HOW A PONTYCLUN FAVOURITE IS TURNING HEADS NATIONWIDE

It all started with a project - or rather, two. Designer Zoe, part of The Tap End’s powerhouse team, created spaces so striking that they exploded across social media, capturing the attention of design lovers and influencers alike. One of those projects went on to be featured in Ideal Home and Living Etc, two of the UK’s leading interiors magazines. “It was surreal seeing our work in print like that,” says Zoe. “What started as a dream bathroom for a client ended up inspiring thousands.”

As if that weren’t enough, The Tap End was named the winner in the Property category at this year’s Cardiff Life Awards - an accolade that cements their place as one of South Wales’s most exciting design destinations. “We were blown away,” says owner Justine Bullock. “It’s a reflection of all the love, late nights, and detail that goes into every single space we design.”

But this isn’t a studio that’s resting on its laurels. The Tap End has recently completed a thoughtful renovation of its Pontyclun showroom, choosing to evolve the space rather than expand beyond it. The result? A cleverly designed “shop within a shop” where customers can now browse an evergrowing selection of tiles and flooring - perfect not just for bathrooms, but for kitchens, hallways, and living spaces too.

“The idea was to give our clients more choice, more freedom,” Justine explains. “Not everyone is ready to do a full bathroom project, but they might want to refresh a kitchen splashback, or lay down new flooring in a hallway. Now, they can pop in, have a coffee, and explore samples at their own pace.”

The new department has been curated with the same eye for detail The Tap End is known for - expect rich textures, bold patterns, and timeless finishes that reflect the best of contemporary and classic design. Whether you’re searching for terrazzo tiles with personality or herringbone flooring with heritage charm, there’s something here to elevate every corner of your home.

The showroom refresh also coincides with the return of designer Joanna, who’s just back from maternity leave - and already making waves with her fresh, family-friendly style. “It’s great to be back in the studio,” Joanna shares. “My time away definitely influenced how I approach design. I’m really focusing on spaces that feel luxurious, but still work for real life - with kids, pets, and everything in between.”

Clients working with Joanna can expect personal touches, thoughtful layouts, and a talent for layering texture and tone that feels effortless. And yes - she’s more than happy to chat about her latest projects (and possibly sneak you a peek at her stunning mood boards).

What makes The Tap End stand out isn’t just the aesthetic appeal of their workit’s the atmosphere they’ve created. The studio feels approachable and inspiring, stylish but warm. It’s a place where people don’t just redesign rooms - they reimagine how they want to live.

As the studio’s influence continues to grow, one thing is clear: Pontyclun’s bestkept secret is definitely out. The Tap End’s website has also recently been updated so please give it a look for more inspiration.

“It’s a place where people don’t just redesign roomsthey reimagine how they want to live.”

Win an overnight stay at Bodysgallen to include afternoon tea, dinner and breakfast the next day and use of the spa facilities.

W IN!

Bodysgallen Hall is situated south of the town of Llandudno in North Wales, on the west of Pydew mountain. The word “bodysgallen” has been interpreted as “house among the thistles”. Bodysgallen Hall is a Grade I 17th Century house that has gradually evolved over the centuries from modest hamlet to a large and comfortable country house, with restored and converted outbuildings, surrounded by one of the finest Arts and Crafts gardens in Wales.

This early-17th-century block has five storeys, including attics and cellar, and its austere detailing and mullioned windows set the pattern for all future work at the house. Its two main storeys comprise a large low hall entered at terrace level from the west, and an equally large chamber above, which became the drawing room.

Both rooms open in one corner into a curious little bay, with windows on two sides and a fireplace on the third; and both have heraldic overmantels. The hall is carved, with the arms of Gruffydd ap Cynan, Wynn and Colwyn.

The long connection between the house and the Mostyn family started in the sixteenth century, late in the Elizabethan era, when it was owned by Richard Mostyn, who served as High Sheriff of Caernarfonshire, that it became a residential house.

Today, Bodysgallen Hall is an award-winning hotel home to one of North Wales’ finest restaurants awarded 3 AA Rosettes serving traditional Welsh cuisine. The hotel is also home to a spa with an indoor swimming pool. The hotel offers 31 spacious bedrooms, a combination of rooms in the main house and cottages within the grounds. The gardens are a true highlight here and have been featured on the BBC show ‘Glorious Gardens from Above’ with several themed garden tours available throughout the year, hosted by the head gardener.

Choosing the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions you’ll make as a parent. You want a place where they will thrive academically, feel nurtured, and develop into confident, well-rounded individuals. St Clare’s School and Nursery, set in stunning surroundings near Porthcawl, offers just that.

BE YOU. BRILLIANTLY!

AT ST CLARE’S SCHOOL AND NURSERY

Be You. Brilliantly! At St Clare’s School and Nursery

We sat down with Headteacher Helen Hier to find out what makes St Clare’s such a special place for children aged 2.5 to 18 years.

What sets St Clare’s apart from other schools?

At St Clare’s, we provide a nurturing and caring environment where children are encouraged to work hard, be themselves, and reach their potential. Our small class sizes allow teachers to truly know each child, tailoring lessons to their individual needs and encouraging them to contribute confidently in class.

How does the school support academic excellence?

Our innovative curriculum fosters curiosity, independent thinking, and a love for learning. We achieve excellent academic results across STEM, the arts, and humanities, but beyond that, we equip students with skills to succeed in an ever-changing world.

Pastoral care seems to be a priority at St Clare’s. Can you tell us more? Absolutely! A happy child is a successful child, and our pastoral care is at the heart of everything we do. We focus on mindfulness, emotional resilience, and strong teacher-student relationships to ensure every child feels valued and supported throughout their educational journey.

Outdoor learning is a key part of your approach. Why is this important?

We are fortunate to be set within 11 acres of beautiful grounds, close to the beach. We embrace outdoor learning through Forest School sessions, scientific field studies, and literature-inspired adventures. These experiences not only support academic learning but also encourage problem-solving, resilience, and a connection with nature.

What can families expect when they visit St Clare’s?

We offer personalised tours all year round, including during school holidays. A member of our friendly Admissions Team will guide you around the school and answer any questions you may have.

Finally, why should parents consider St Clare’s for their child?

Because we believe every child should have the opportunity to be brilliantly themselves! We nurture, challenge, and inspire every student, helping them unlock their full potential.

Headteacher Helen Hier

Whether you’re a solo traveller seeking peace or a couple looking to reconnect in a tranquil setting, these escapes offer the perfect antidote to stress and exhaustion.

T HE ULTIMATE SELF-CARE ESCAPE WHY YOU DESERVE A HEALTHY RETREAT HOLIDAY

Why a Wellness Retreat?

Modern life is demanding, and over time, stress can take its toll on both mental and physical health. A wellness retreat allows you to step away from the chaos and immerse yourself in a serene, rejuvenating environment. Here’s why investing in yourself with this kind of trip is so important:

De-Stress & Unwind

Whether through yoga, meditation, or spa treatments, retreats provide the tools to help you relax deeply.

Hiking through breathtaking landscapes and breathing in fresh air can help reduce stress hormones and boost mental clarity.

Boost Mental Clarity

Taking a break from daily pressures allows you to reflect, reset, and return home with a fresh perspective.

AND RELAX

Top global wellness retreat destinations

If you’re ready to escape, here are some of the best destinations offering mind-body rejuvenation:

Tuscany, Italy

Indulge in yoga retreats among rolling vineyards, fresh farm-to-table cuisine, and long walks through breathtaking countryside.

Rishikesh, India

Known as the yoga capital of the world, this spiritual haven on the Ganges offers authentic Ayurvedic treatments and meditation retreats.

Koh Samui, Thailand

Famous for its luxury wellness resorts, where you can enjoy detox programs, beachfront yoga, and holistic healing therapies.

Costa Rica

Wake up to jungle sounds and ocean waves while enjoying surfing, ecohikes, and rejuvenating spa treatments.

n Holistic spa treatments like massages and facials

n Digital detox opportunities for mental clarity

n Workshops on stress management and wellness

Let the Experts Handle It

Planning the perfect wellness retreat can be overwhelming - but that’s where Sam Smith Travel comes in. Their experienced team has personally visited many of these locations or arranged trips for their clients, ensuring insider knowledge and honest recommendations. Whether you’re looking for a budget-friendly escape or a high-end luxury retreat, they’ll find the best option tailored to your needs.

Sam Smith’s very own Suzanne Cumpston recently enjoyed a wellbeing retreat holiday at Shanti Som in Spain recently with her husband. What they loved about this retreat is that you could participate in the classes as much (Suzanne) or as little (David) as you like. The resort was stunningly positioned and contemporary, with experienced instructors and chefs who could accommodate every level of competence in each lesson so that you didn’t feel intimidated by the lycra clad, incredibly bendy participants. David wasn’t convinced initially and, although he didn’t immerse himself into the lessons, he thoroughly enjoyed every other aspect of the retreat. They stopped off at the party loving Ibiza and enjoyed what that had to offer but still came home refreshed and ready to take on the world!

Moral of the story...

Why wait? Invest in your well-being and let Sam Smith Travel craft your perfect wellness escape. Your mind, body, and soul will thank you for it.

Villa Ravello

When a place is truly special, it’s worth returning to time and time again. And Hartwell House & Spa in Buckinghamshire is one of those rare gems that keeps calling us back.

Having first visited on a whim, we knew a return trip was inevitable - and it didn’t disappoint.

A R EGAL R ETREAT: OUR STAY

After a relaxed cross-country drive, we arrived at Hartwell House & Spa, a grand and utterly gorgeous stately home nestled in a sprawling 90-acre estate. Restored by Historic House Hotels, it offers a five-star experience wrapped up in history, charm, and countryside serenity.

History lovers’ heaven

Now, we won’t launch into a fullblown history lesson (though we absolutely could - Hartwell’s past could fill a library), but let’s just say, if you love a place with a story to tell, you’re in for a treat. And if you want the best insights? Seek out Laurence, the concierge. He’s an absolute gem, brimming with fascinating historical tidbits that bring Hartwell’s past to life.

A Royal stay

For this visit, we decided to go all out and booked one of Hartwell’s royal four-poster rooms - because, well, why not? Once home to King Louis XVIII and Queen Marie Josephine of Savoy, these stunning suites are the very definition of luxurious grandeur. Situated at each corner of the main house, the rooms are decorated with antique furnishings, fine paintings, and breathtaking views over the gardens, parkland, and lake.

The details? Think king-size fourposter bed, an elegant en-suite, a well-stocked hospitality tray (biscuits included - always a win), and Quercus Penhaligon toiletries. Plus, a Nespresso machine for those all-important morning coffees.

AT H ARTWELL HOUSE & SPA

Setting the scene

It’s hard to overstate the calming effect of Hartwell House. The moment we arrived we felt our stress melt away. The combination of the manicured grounds, tranquil lake, and graceful waterfowl made for the perfect escape from the daily grind.

Dining at its finest Dinner at Hartwell House? An absolute must. The food and service are outstanding. If we had one teeny observation (definitely not a complaint), it would be the lighting in the dining room - lovely and atmospheric, but not ideal for capturing Instagram-worthy shots. Then again, perhaps that’s the charm - some places simply refuse to be dragged into the modern age, and we respect that.

The mastermind behind the menu, Executive Head Chef Daniel Richardson, creates imaginative, beautifully balanced dishes with locally sourced ingredients whenever possible. Our meal was nothing short of a culinary adventure:

Starters: Hand-dived Scottish sea scallop with fennel and smoked haddock chowder, and a beer-braised onion tart tatin with thyme-infused goat’s cheese.

Mains: Fillet of beef Wellington with truffle purée and baby onion petals, and a delicate stuffed saddle of rabbit with caramelised Jerusalem artichoke purée.

Desserts: Yorkshire rhubarb namelaka with toasted pecan ice cream, and a classic British cheese selection with apple and cider chutney.

We finished our meal in the library with coffee and petit fours - because, well, that’s how you do things at Hartwell.

The people make the place

It’s worth saying that Hartwell House is spectacular in its own right - but what truly makes it unforgettable is the people. The staff are warm, attentive, and genuinely lovely. Nothing is too much trouble, and their hospitality is as polished as the antique furniture. A hotel, no matter how beautiful, is only as special as the people who run it and work in itand Hartwell has absolutely nailed it.

Exploring the area

While we could have happily spent all our time within the estate, we couldn’t resist a little wander beyond Hartwell’s gates. With just one night to spare, we popped into Thame, a charming market town filled with independent shops - ideal for a relaxed afternoon. We also made a quick stop at Henleyon-Thames, another favourite of ours, still buzzing with boutique shops, cafes, and riverside charm.

Parting thoughts...

In short? We adore Hartwell House. It’s elegant yet understated, grand yet welcoming, historical yet utterly timeless. It’s the kind of place where you can truly lose yourself - just as so many have over the centuries. Whether you’re after a romantic getaway, a history-filled escape, or simply a dose of countryside luxury, this is the place to be.

Would we return? In a heartbeat.

Hartwell House loves dogs...

As you may know, this hotel loves dogs and Hartwell House is very dog friendly so if you have a pooch and you don’t want to leave it at home, Hartwell House could very well be the perfect staycation location. Just thought we’d put that out there.

Mid Wales is simply stunning. This, combined with its central location, means it attracts visitors from across Wales, the Midlands, the Cotswolds and the rest of the world.

A M AGICAL BREAK LOVE2STAY, MID WALES

We’ve just returned from a truly wonderful stay at Love2Stay, Caersws, and we can’t recommend it highly enough! From the moment we arrived, we were impressed by the immaculate surroundings, warm welcome, and beautiful Mid Wales countryside.

Our two-bedroom lodge was beautifully furnished, featuring a fully fitted kitchen (even a washing machine!), a comfortable lounge area, and a small balcony overlooking the breathtaking views. But the real highlight was the hot tubabsolute bliss! Sitting under the twinkling canopy lights in the evening, soaking in the warm water while admiring the rolling hills, felt utterly magical.

The attention to detail was fantastic. We brought our dog, Roxy, and were delighted that she received her very own goodie bag - including a rope toy she hasn’t stopped playing with since! It’s clear that Love2Stay is a dogfriendly retreat in every sense.

The leisure complex was another standout feature. The swimming pool, spa, sauna, and steam room were all immaculately maintained, and I was lucky enough to have the entire spa to myself both mornings - what a treat! Mark also sampled the cooked breakfast before we left and was full of praise for the presentation and quality.

Beyond the resort, we spent a lovely day exploring the nearby towns, made even better by the glorious weather. The location is ideal for discovering the beauty of Mid Wales. Cardigan Bay is a leisurely hour’s drive west and Shrewsbury an hour to the eastwe visited both.

Finally, a huge thank you to the staff, who were friendly, helpful, and truly made us feel welcome throughout our stay. Their hospitality was the cherry on top of an already fantastic experience.

If you’re looking for a relaxing, luxurious break in Wales - whether for a romantic escape, family getaway, or dog-friendly retreat - Love2Stay Mid Wales ticks all the boxes. They also have one east of Shrewsbury so a visit there is definitely now on our bucket list.

Have you ever thought about writing your life story? Or capturing the memories, experiences, or lessons you’ve learned along the way? Everyone has a story to tell – and at Vale Life, we believe every story deserves to be shared.

E VERYONE H AS A STORY

Whether it’s a memoir, a biography, a novel, or a collection of photography or art, we can help you every step of the way.

From those first tentative words to a beautifully finished book, you’ll certainly be proud of, we’re here to make your dream a reality.

From dream to bookstore: how we can help you become an author

Many people dream of writing a book, but few know how to begin. That’s where we come in. We offer a complete range of services to help you shape your story into a professional publication. Writing, editing, proofreading, design, layout, printing – we take care of it all.

You don’t need to be an experienced writer. You don’t even need to know how to start. All you need is the willingness to share your story, ideas, or creativity. We’ll help you find the right structure, voice, and style to bring your book to life. And if you want your book available more widely, we can even assist with publishing on Amazon and other platforms.

We also support authors who want to publish fiction – whether it’s a novel, a short story collection, or poetry. If you’re a photographer or artist, we can help you produce stunning, highquality books showcasing your work.

Leaving a legacy: why writing your life story matters

Writing your story isn’t just for you – it’s a gift for your family, friends, and future generations. Imagine your grandchildren, and their grandchildren, reading about your life in your own words. Your book becomes a precious legacy, preserving not just facts and dates but the emotions, wisdom, and experiences that shaped you.

We often hear from clients who wish they had asked their parents or grandparents more questions while they still had the chance. Writing your story ensures your memories are not lost. Whether it’s tales of childhood adventures, travels, triumphs, or lessons learned, your experiences are valuable – and deserve to be remembered.

Tell your story - inspire others

Your story isn’t just for your family. It could inspire, comfort, or empower others too. Many people who write their life stories discover unexpected ways their experiences resonate with a wider audience.

And it’s not only life stories that inspire. A work of fiction, a collection of poetry, or a photography book can be just as powerful. Creativity has no age limit and no restrictions. Whether you want to share your imagination, your insights, or your vision with the world, we can help you do it.

You have complete control. Your book can be as private or as public as you wish. Whether you want a handful of copies for loved ones or a wider publication, we’ll tailor everything to your wishes.

Spotlight: local authors and artists we’ve helped We’ve been privileged to work with a number of local people from across the Vale who decided to take the leap and publish their books. Some have penned heartfelt memoirs and autobiographies. Others have written novels; you might have a poetry collection or have created beautiful art and photography and you’d just like to share it with the world. All the people we’ve worked with have found the experience rewarding – and many tell us it’s one of the most satisfying things they’ve ever done.

You could be next. Whether you have a clear idea or just a vague notion that “I’d like to create something one day”, we’re here to help you make it happen.

If you’ve ever dreamed of writing your story, creating a novel, or publishing your artwork, don’t wait any longer. Contact us today for a no-obligation chat about how we can help you bring your ideas to life. After all, everyone has a story – what’s yours?

IT’S EASIER THAN YOU THINK Five myths about writing a book

I’m not a good enough writer. You don’t need to be. We’ll help polish your words or even ghostwrite for you if you prefer.

I don’t have enough time. We work to your schedule, helping you make progress at your own pace.

It’s too expensive. We offer flexible packages to suit different budgets – you might be pleasantly surprised.

No one would want to read my story. You’d be amazed how many people find inspiration in honest, heartfelt stories.

It’s too late for me.

It’s never too late to start. In fact, later life is often the perfect time to reflect and write.

Lots of women are now enjoying the thrill of starting up their own business, whether it be as a second income, a passive income or even to replace a job that really wasn’t giving them the financial and time freedom they wanted.

We’re blessed in the Vale of Glamorgan with some of the most breathtaking coastal paths in the UK.

I imagine that you have heard this question asked every time a waiter or waitress arrives at your restaurant or café table: “Are there any intolerances or allergies we need to be aware of?”

I NTOLERANCES: T HE L OWDOWN

An intolerance is a reaction to a certain food or substance whereas an allergy causes an immune reaction in your body. Perhaps you suspect you have a reaction to something but can’t quite figure out what?

Finding out which foods to avoid can be something you could do independently. It means cutting out a couple of foods and observing how you feel and how you feel as you reintroduce them one by one. This takes time and patience, and it is trial and error.

Patch testing, blood tests, hair tests are ways of being tested for intolerances and this saves you a lot of time and frustration! Kinesiology testing/muscle response testing is another way to determine stressors on your body. It can be very powerful, and the results are instant: you will feel your muscle’s response!

Foods which cause a reaction are stressors: they stress your body. Therefore, by avoiding these foods you’re taking away stress from your body, which takes stress away from your immune system.

Once you know and avoid your food intolerances, plus you:

n reduce your sugar intake

n support your microbiome

n increase your sun exposure

n increase exercise

n improve sleeping habits

You will naturally boost your immune system and reap the amazing benefits all year ‘round.

My Foundation Setter Programme is all about giving you the tools and information to boost your immunity, energy and vitality. It includes:

n food intolerance test

n recipe book

n access to wellbeing hub

n retest of offending foods

n a Zoom call with me

Nestled in the heart of Llantwit Major, Vale Hearing Healthcare is a proudly family-run clinic providing expert audiology services to the local community and beyond.

VALE H EARING H EALTHCARE

A SOUND CHOICE

Founded by experienced Audiologist and Registered Hearing Aid Dispenser Kimberley Spargo, the practice has become a trusted destination for those seeking personalised, professional hearing care.

Kimberley established the business in 2019 with a clear mission: to bring high-quality, accessible hearing healthcare to the town she and her family call home. With over twenty years of experience in both the NHS and private sectors, her goal was to offer something different - care that is not only clinically excellent but also deeply rooted in community values.

It’s a true family affair. Kimberley leads as Director and Senior Audiologist, working alongside her husband Richard Smith, who manages the practice and supports patients as a Hearing Healthcare Assistant. At reception, Kimberley’s mother, Elaine Baber, offers a warm welcome and friendly face to every visitor.

Vale Hearing Healthcare offers a full range of services including ear wax removal, hearing assessments for adults, advanced hearing aid fittings, repairs, and bespoke ear protection for noise or water exposure. As the Vale is home to many water sports enthusiasts, the clinic often treats patients with conditions like Exostosis, caused by repeated exposure to cold water. Custom swim plugs are just one of the tailored solutions they provide.

The clinic works exclusively with Starkey, one of the world’s leading hearing aid manufacturers. This partnership ensures patients benefit from state-of-the-art technology, including the upcoming Genesis AI range - intelligent hearing aids that make millions of real-time adjustments for an enhanced listening experience.

Our regular patients will already have met our lovely Hearing Care Assistant, Rachael, who has been working and training with us for over a year and is a registered member of the British Society of Hearing Aid Audiologists (BSHAA).

Rachael is also a qualified (AMSPAR) medical secretary having worked for the NHS over 10 years and has also previously worked in the private audiology sector for 5 years as a practice manager and assisting Audiologists with general hearing aid maintenance.

During 2024, Rachael completed her hearing healthcare training in our clinic alongside our Directors, Kim (HCPC Registered Hearing Aid Audiologist) and Richard (Qualified HCA) and completed BSHAA approved HCA and Ear wax Removal training at Starkey Hearing UK, Stockport.

Rachael assists our Audiologist, Kim, who is 22 years qualified, in performing routine hearing assessments, hearing aid repairs/ adjustments and ear wax removals.

Appointments can be booked directly, with no GP referral needed, and home visits for ear wax removal are available within a 10-mile radius. The clinic also prides itself on competitive pricing, short waiting times, and a genuine commitment to improving quality of life.

Award-winning and communityfocused, Vale Hearing Healthcare continues to grow its reputation across South Wales. “Helping someone hear clearly again is one of the most rewarding parts of our job,” says Kimberley. “We’re proud to offer such an essential service right here in our hometown.”

Vale Solicitors were founded in Cowbridge in 1867 (as Rees and Gwyn) and it is over fifty years since they first opened in Llantwit Major.

T HE L AB R EPORT

BACK TO THE FUTURE IN LLANTWIT MAJOR

Arthur, official Labrador at Vale Solicitors, reflects on the past and the future.

There were of course lawyers in Llantwit long before us. In the 16th Century Edmund Vann did well enough from his legal practice to build Old Place in Llantwit Major. At the other end of town Boverton Place was the home of Roger Seys the Attorney General of all Wales under Queen Elizabeth 1st. There seems to have been some friction between these two lawyers. Edward Vann was fined over £1,000 at the Court of Star Chamber for his part in an affray in the centre of Llantwit Major when he led an attack on the Seys family.

Lawyer relations in Llantwit Major are a good deal more harmonious these days. Vale Solicitors Directors, Michael Morgan and Jon Hewitson, have worked together for over thirty years and remain the best of friends. They are proud of the history of their firm but look forward to the future with the support of an excellent team (including their Labradors)

Arthur and his assistant Paddington enjoy the quality of Labrador office life in Llantwit Major with regular lunchtime trips to the beach and a regular supply of treats from grateful clients.

Arthur is always on paw to help Jo Sloper our Chief Conveyancer in Llantwit Major. Jo maintains the highest standards to earn our accreditation by the Law Society’s Quality Conveyancing Scheme. She wins constant praise from clients whom she guides through the sometimes-complex process of buying and selling homes.

Denisa Buciuta and Carys Slack are our ace Solicitors. They both qualified with Vale Solicitors and are now in demand for the best advice and assistance in Family Law, Property and Wills and Probate.

New boy in Llantwit Major is leading Property and Housing Solicitor Chris Coates, who returned to join the Vale Solicitors after starting as Michael’s trainee some 30 years ago.

Our rising star is Trainee Solicitor Rebeca Williams and hopefully she will be part of our future.

The importance for everyone at Vale Solicitors is to provide personal and efficient service for all our clients. We meet most clients in person at our office in Llantwit Major and Barry make home visits throughout the Vale

Arthur says: “At Vale Solicitors we offer a full range of legal services for the good people of Llantwit Major and throughout the Vale. Whatever your problem, please give us a call - but don’t forget the dog treats!”

If you live in or around the beautiful coastal town of Llantwit Major, there’s a good chance you’ve dropped into Café Velo. A firm favourite with cyclists and locals alike, this warm and welcoming coffee stop has been at the heart of Church Street for over a decade. With a stylish revamp, a new (but familiar) partner to uphold the family run business, and continued community support, Café Velo is very much in gear for its next chapter.

NEW C HAPTER FOR C AFÉ VELO

Café Velo, the Llantwit Major café much beloved by touring cyclists across the Vale of Glamorgan, has had a revamp. It also has a new co-owner stepping in to join Jo Pyke, who took over the café alongside her husband Gary back in 2022. The café is staying in the family: new co-owner Rachel Davies is Jo’s niece and a familiar face for café customers.

The café has been a regular stop for cyclists since it opened in 2013 and is known not only for its warm welcome, great coffee and locally made cakes, but also for its range of quality cycling gear and essential kit.

With its recent revamp, Jo and Rachel, and the rest of Team Velo, have sought to freshen up the café and enhance all the things its loyal customers already enjoy. The bubbly and welcoming staff can now be found behind a newly expanded counter which has more space to display many of the locally produced cakes and bakes – all favourites of the regulars.

The large communal table, regularly frequented by cycling groups as well as community groups such as the Welsh Conversation Group, has been supplemented with an area of additional seating for those who come to the café to work. Those seeking solitude can enjoy peace and quiet in the Brake Room or hold a one-toone meeting. In fair weather, there’s always the café’s walled garden filled with white-washed walls and lavender, evoking summer days in Provence.

Cycle kit is not forgotten and can now be found in Gary’s Corner. It was Gary’s passion for cycling and coffee that secured the café’s future, prompting him to step in and buy the café after the pandemic. When Gary sadly passed away, the cycling community showed its gratitude by honouring him with a peloton escort joining Gary on his final ride from St Illtud’s Church through the streets of Llantwit. They have also come to the aid of Jo and Rachel, who are on a steep learning curve about all things cycling, from self-sealing tyres and arm warmers to hydration and base layers!

Jo and Rachel are also well supported by the local business community. The café is located on Church Street, in the historic old part of town, which has a close-knit community of small businesses. One of the things that makes Church Street so special is the way they collaborate and support one another, all sharing a deep understanding of what makes this community thrive. Both Rachel and Jo are passionate about keeping Café Velo at the heart of the community, providing a place for everyone to catch up over coffee or for visitors to breathe in the unique character of Church Street.

You can often see customers welcomed into the café with a freshly toasted ciabatta purchased from Sarah at The Bakery next door, which is then plated up for them in the café to be enjoyed with a coffee and cake. Customers of Bardic Vintage Books regularly browse the shelves clutching a Café Velo coffee cup delivered by a member of the very accommodating Team Velo. A bustling community where they all work together to support each other.

As, allegedly, the only dog-friendly café in Llantwit Major, Café Velo also has a loyal following of the four-legged kind, fondly referred to as the Café Velo V.I.Pups, who can often be witnessed enthusiastically dragging their hooman along Church Street to disappear into the café for a well-earned treat!

The newly added 50L cool douche shower offers members and guests a refreshing and invigorating experience, complementing the benefits of the hot sauna. After relaxing in the sauna, where muscles are soothed, and pores are opened, stepping into the cold drench shower helps constrict blood vessels, tighten the skin and stimulate blood flow.

If you’ve followed the legendary Wim Hof, you’ll know this contrast between hot and cold temperatures can enhance circulation, reduce muscle tension, and boost overall wellbeing. Additionally, the cold exposure triggers a rush of adrenaline and endorphins, leaving users feeling alert, energised, and revitalised.

In addition to these upgrades, the pool and wet area walls and floors are finished with premium Altro cladding that blends harmoniously with rich woodgrain-clad structural columns. This sophisticated aesthetic flows through the entire area, seamlessly connecting the updated male and female changing rooms and shower areas.

Carl Lester, Head of Leisure, Spa & Golf at www.valeresort.com, commented: “We are delighted to unveil our newly refurbished wet facilities, marking a significant investment in the wellness experience for our valued members and guests. Every detail has been carefully considered, from the state-of-the-art steam room and sauna to the invigorating cool douche shower, to create an environment where relaxation and rejuvenation go hand in hand. We’re proud to offer facilities that not only promote wellbeing but also reflect the high standards and luxurious experience our guests have come to expect from the Vale Resort.”

Tag Heuer Monaco

You will not find a more complete Heuer Monaco than this watch. The Heuer Monaco became famous thanks to its "leading role" in the film Le Mans. Steve McQueen wore the classic automatic Monaco with a blue dial on his wrist. The Heuer Monaco offered here is powered by the Valjoux 7736 manual winding movement and is even rarer than the 1133 automatic version.

SOCIAL LIFE

BRIDGEND

Community spirit shines for Y Bont

The overwhelming support from the local community for the children and families at Y Bont was truly heartwarming back in February.

The evening featured breathtaking performances from the Old Castle Primary school choir and the Cor Merched Bro Ogwr choir, while the teaching staff of Oldcastle Primary School took to the runway as models. Special guests, including the Bridgend Town Council Mayor and Councillor, Ian Williams, and his consort Nicola Williams, and special guest appearance by renowned designer David Emanuel, added to the occasion’s prestige.

With over 100 guests in attendance, the event was a tremendous success, raising more than £2,700! A huge thank you goes to Venetia Steele Boutique for the stunning fashion show, Oldcastle Primary School for hosting, and Headteacher Ceri for bringing it all together with Nicola Venetia Steele and Independent Councillor Ian Williams.

Gratitude also goes to everyone who donated raffle prizes, purchased tickets, and supported the cause. Your kindness and generosity made the night truly unforgettable! David Emanuel enthused about the evening saying: “Last night was nothing short of spectacular!”

BONVILSTON

The
A night to remember!

What a night! The Red Lion Bonvilston marked its first anniversary in true style, with an evening filled with music, laughter, and incredible community spirit. The beloved Me + Him Acoustic Duo made a much-anticipated return, delivering an unforgettable live performance that had everyone on their feet.

Friends, family, and loyal customers came together to celebrate Michelle & Craig’s fantastic first year at the helm, raising a glass to their hard work and dedication. The atmosphere was electric, with the pub buzzing well into the night as guests enjoyed great company, plenty of cheers, and a true Bonvilston knees-up.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along and made the evening so special. Here’s to another year of great memories, good times, and, of course, fantastic pints at The Red Lion!

David Doore owns and manages D&S Frames in Barry with daughter Claire and two other staff. Vale Life puts David and his team in the frame for once.

PICTURE T HIS

David said, “Let us change your perception of a picture frame!” To be fair, he did. I had a couple of lovely old Steve McQueen cinema posters that needed framing and just left it in David’s capable hands. They did a magnificent job. Don’t get me wrong, the posters were nice, but D&S Frames brought them to life.

We caught up with David and his team at their unit studio on Ty Verlon Industrial Estate to find out more.

How long has the business been established?

We opened on the 25th June 1980. D&S Frames is truly a family business with a wealth of experience and creativity. Whether you wish to turn a photograph into a family treasure or have an heirloom that you would like to be displayed for all to admire, our team is able to transform your valued memento and will often exceed your expectations. Nothing is impossible to us, only a challenge.

How did you get into the business? I had to frame a brass rubbing once and it just took off from there.

What products and services do you offer?

Picture framing, framed mirrors, box frames and ready-made frames. We also provide a computerised mount cutting service.

How many people do you employ?

Three staff with over 65 years experience between them.

Why would I choose you and not go to Ikea?

Outstanding service, superior quality and expert advice. We firmly believe picture framing is an art, everything is bespoke and is made specifically to order to fit the job.

Are you busy?

Always... we recently framed sixtyseven pictures for Superdry to be displayed in their new shop on Oxford Street. We had 24 hours to complete the job and thanks to my amazing staff we did it with minutes to spare. We have also framed for Oasis, Charles Tyrwhitt, Clarks shoes and Radley’s.

Who are your customers?

We work with both private and commercial customers. From amateur and professional artists, pro photographers, and enthusiastic amateurs right through to collectors and blue-chip companies.

What’s the largest frame you’ve ever produced?

That was for La Senza’s (ladies lingerie) 2010 UK stores Christmas window displays. We also made 250 frames 2m x 1.2m for Top Shops grand opening in Manhattan, New York, shown on Sky TV.

What’s the most unusual object you’ve framed?

A saxophone? That was unusual. A tutu, and most recently a Hornby train plus carriage - complete with scenery false grass and bushes. Basically, there’s not much we can’t frame.

Are there colour and style trends in framing? What’s popular at the moment?

Traditional and modern frames are always in demand. Black, grey, and earthy colours seem to be the favoured tones at the moment.

What’s a typical turnaround time for a frame?

We always quote 10 working days (2 weeks). But we are often asked to meet deadlines, sometimes as soon as 24 hours which we always accommodate.

We also sell 3d box frames for medals, CD’s, flowers, lego etc. Check out our eBay store at: www.ebay.co.uk/str/dsframes
