www.citylifecardiff.co.uk 0845 180 2345 Cardiff House, Cardiff Road, Cardiff CF63 2AW Passionate about Cardiff We are a small independent publisher. We are not a large publishing group pretending to be home grown. City Life magazine is written, designed and printed in Cardiff for the people of Cardiff. Our philosophy We are committed to quality. This quote by William Foster pretty much sums up our thinking: “Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives.” Caveat emptor Advertisers supply their own copy or artwork, and therefore City Life cannot accept any responsibility for disputes between advertisers and their customers. Caveat emptor - let the buyer beware. Important you read this We have made every effort to ensure that all information contained in City Life or on www.citylifecardiff.co.uk (or our social media streams) is correct and accurate. WELCOME

As a true football enthusiast, I couldn’t even begin to write this without congratulating our fantastic, national football team for their amazing success in reaching the quarter finals in the Euro 2016 tournament. They certainly did us proud. Each issue we receive great feedback from readers saying that, through the magazine, they’ve discovered a great new restaurant, fab boutique or cool, independent business - nothing gives us more pleasure. If you have a favourite you’ d like us to share, please get in touch. Being of Italian descent, I do love my clothes and, along my travels I get to visit some gorgeous men’s and women’s boutiques. I’ve always been impressed with Boutique 53 (please see their feature on pages 26 and 27). Owner Jayne Davies has a keen eye for what her customers want and need and the quality of her brands are second to none. It’s no wonder she has such a following. Definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for pieces that can’t be found on the high street.

If you think you could sell advertising space in south Wales, then please send your cv to jennifer@goodlifepublishing. co.uk. We would love to hear from you Until next time.

We’re a friendly, happy bunch here at City Life magazine, Cardiff and we’re expanding. We’re looking for like-minded people to join our great team.

Missed the last issue? We hold a small number of each issue in stock so if you do need a pristine copy, please telephone us or email jennifer@goodlifepublishing.co.uk. Hopefully we’ll have the issue you want (but we cannot guarantee it). Each back issue costs £5 including postage and packing. Yes it’s free. Priceless actually! City Life is distributed free through a wide variety of outlets across Cardiff and beyond and is given away free of charge on the understanding that we are happy for it to be lent, passed on, given to friends and generally read until it falls apart. At which point, you can recycle it and we’d be delighted if you did. Green is good The pulp used in the production of the paper City Life is printed on is sourced from sustainably managed Scandinavian tree farms and utilises an elementary chlorine-free bleaching process.

Established in 1994, Hollybush Properties Limited is a privately owned property investment and development company. We chat with Development Director Chris Case about his expanding business, and its exciting new project in Lisvane, Cardiff.

GREAT ESTATE

(Left to right) Chris Case of Hollybush Properties Residential, Rhodri Morgan of Morgans Residential and Edward Rankin of Chris John and Partners.

Hi Chris, how has the latest side to your business come about? Over the years we’ve acquired a large portfolio of commercial and residential properties around the Cardiff area which we’ve developed and retained for long term investment. In the last eighteen months we have expanded our activities with the creation of our sister company Hollybush Properties (Residential) Limited. This arm of the business is focused on producing new builds or refurbishing existing sites for high end residential properties with a view to sell. And how did you get involved with your current project on the Ty Gwyn Estate in Lisvane? This project was brought to us by a fellow local developer, who is refurbishing the existing Coach House and Lodge at the site, and knew we were in the market for land in desirable locations.

“ We’re establishing ourselves in the high end, luxury property market.”

We had assessed a number of different options within the Cardiff area, but none had the scope and prestige that comes with the Ty Gwyn Estate. We knew straight away that there was an opportunity here to create something very special. What made you choose this site? The Ty Gwyn Estate is one of the most famous in Cardiff. The main house with its five acres of land was built and developed in 1906 by James E Turner, the founder of E Turner and Sons, who built Cardiff City Hall, and was later owned by Julian Hodge, one of Wales’ most famous financial figures. We’re establishing ourselves in the high end, luxury property market; building homes of an extremely high standard, with a bespoke design and in prestigious locations. This new development will encompass all of that and more. The property is being built within the original estate’s grade two listed walled garden; its enclosing wall forming part of the ground floor structure, which makes for a fantastic design feature. 14

It’s a fantastic location - what can you tell us about the property itself? This house is one of three, including the refurbished Coach House and Lodge, which together will make up an exclusive, private gated community on one of Cardiff ’s most sought after roads. The five bedroom new build house will be over 3,400 square feet, and opens out to a beautiful private 0.2 acre enclosed orchard garden to the rear. The external style of the property is generally in keeping with that of the existing Coach House, retaining the history and grandeur of the site. In contrast we have gone for a very contemporary, open plan feel for the internal design and layout, boasting stylish and modern features including glazed screens and balconies linking the house with the rear garden. That sounds fabulous. What architects have you chosen for this project and why? The property has been designed by distinguished Cardiff architects, Davies Sutton, who specialise in listed buildings.

The quality of their designs can be seen at previously completed projects such as Kemey’s Folly, Cefn Mably Hospital and the old Grammar School in Cowbridge. Their expertise has been paramount in maximising the design features, incorporating the existing wall and creating a truly bespoke property unlike any other before. Our structural engineers, Bingham Hall, have also been outstanding in producing a structure which exhibits the traditional style but, moreover, allows for the internal

unique selling points, such as the open plan ground floor and the Cathedral style ceilings to the rear bedrooms. Completing our team, our quantity surveyor Ian Smith of Smith Shipway has been essential in ensuring the viability of the project and has worked closely with myself to steer the development from the outset.

“ Building homes of an extremely high standard, with a bespoke design and in prestigious locations.”

Who can City Life readers contact if they’re interested in this property? The property will be going on the market towards the end of this year but if prospective purchasers are interested in buying from plan, and potentially having an input in design, they can contact either of our joint agents Chris John and Partners, or Morgan’s Residential using the information provided below.

Emma Cull, lives in North Cornelly near the beautiful Kenfig Hill Nature Reserve and, in our opinion, has a real talent for interior design, so when she wanted some new furniture, only bespoke would do, and that meant a call to Jack & Rose.

INDIVIDUALLY DESIGNED A ND LOVINGLY CREATED

How did you hear about Jack and Rose? I was introduced to Dave from Jack & Rose through Julie Hughes of Interiors, Bridgend who has supplied our handmade curtains.

Jack and Rose made me exactly what I required, and to the size I required, to fit into my home. The wide choice of fabrics was also a massive positive; the only hard bit was to actually choose as there is so much choice.

What made you want to work with them? What I loved about the service Jack and Rose provided was to have the bespoke touch of the furniture, which I just couldn’t get in any of the other furniture shops. Dave from Jack and Rose gave us such a high standard of service. If I was unsure of something, Dave would bring the piece of furniture to our home allowing us to see how it would look before he went to the next stage of upholstering, which always gave us great reassurance.

What work did Jack and Rose carry out for you? My first purchase from Jack & Rose was a two seater settee to fit in our kitchen living area. From seeing the high quality of that piece of furniture, we ordered two Chesterfield style settees as part of a scheme that I was working on with Julie from interiors, who works closely with Dave. Then I bought a French bed for my little girl’s bedroom which needed some work so Jack and rose stripped, painted and re upholstered it it’s beautiful. 16

They also supplied the wallpaper to match the bed for our little girl’s bedroom. We then extended our kitchen so needed a bigger settee, so asked Dave to come and advise us on what we could have. From there we purchased two armchairs and another settee, which is very comfortable, with great child proof fabric and also looks good. We have also purchased a super king size bed, dining chairs, and had more furniture re-upholstered. Did you have your own ideas or did you work with an interior designer? Yes, I did have my own ideas of what I wanted and how I wanted the furniture to look like, but I did also get some ideas from the internet and Jack and Rose’s show room was a big help.

“Dave from Jack and Rose gave us such a high standard of service.”

Owner, David Waters talks a little about the history of Jack and Rose... How long has Jack and Rose been established? Jack and Rose was started by the Rowe company in 1995, supplying House of Fraser, the Rowe company had been manufacturing carpets since 1934. Jack and Rose was set up to complement this side of the business. Who are the owners of the business? We have been making the Jack and Rose furniture for the Rowe Company since 2011 and, in 2014, I acquired the brand and specialised in bespoke furniture, supplying interior designers and private clients. I am third generation in the upholstery business.

Are you happy with the end product? Definitely! We’ve been very happy with every purchase from Jack & Rose; the furniture standards are set very high and have been everything I imagined and more.

after seeing and sitting on the furniture they have made for us. Dave is friendly, professional and very helpful - Jack and Rose have met all our expectations.

How long did the process take? I do take a long time to make my mind up, but as soon as I decided on what I wanted, the furniture making was around six to eight weeks.

What services do you offer? We offer a fully tailored service for both individual private clients and interior designers; any size, any shape, any material; if it involves upholstery, we can create it. For sofas, chairs and beds, we can take a drawing or a photo and create almost anything. Who would you like to work for? We would love to expand our commercial profile. We enjoy collaborating with designers when they are creating a hotel scheme or working with individual boutique hotels in creating a one-off statement piece to set a style.

Jack & Rose Banthorpe House, Crosby Yard Bridgend CF31 1JZ 01656 768844 info@jackandrose.co.uk www.jackandrose.co.uk

Would you be happy to recommend Jack and Rose to friends and colleagues? Yes we’d highly recommend Jack and Rose to friends, and anyone else looking for that something special. My sister and brother have since purchased furniture from Jack and Rose

The Football Association of Wales has signed a new two year deal with local family-owned, Cardiff based gentleman’s shoe store, The Brogue Trader, which will keep international football stars in step with fashion on occasions which require them to wear formal attire.

Chris Macnamara and Chis Coleman

BEST FOOT FORWARD © 2016 David Rawcliffe/Propaganda. All Rights Reserved.

The Brogue Trader are supplying the very best quality shoes to the Welsh national football squad to ensure the players look their very best on formal occasions for the next two years. In European cup year, when the players will be required to attend many functions at different tournament venues and often travel in their ‘number ones’, it is particularly important that they look and feel the part. The Brogue Trader have offered a personal fitting service and have supplied hand-made British leather Loake shoes to every member of the squad and will continue to do so until 2018.

“We are a small family run business based locally here in Morgan Arcade, Ashley Williams and Chris Macnamara

Cardiff and have been supplying formal shoes to the Welsh national rugby squad since 2014, but have nationwide ambitions and this new deal with the FAW is a perfect launch pad for us to raise our profile even further and to a different audience,” enthused The Brogue Trader’s Managing Director, Chris Macnamara. Chris thinks part of the success of the Welsh national squad is down to his aptly nicknamed ‘lucky Loakes’ (Loake Bros shoes) that the guys are wearing and bringing them luck on the field. “Once Loake Shoe-Makers showed an appetite to support us with the FAW partnership, the rest was easy and we are now proud to be able to call ourselves official suppliers to Welsh football,” said Chris.

Servini’s, a long standing favourite with City Life, and the indie crowd of Cardiff, had a brand new makeover at the beginning of 2016. Now, at the height of summer, it is easy to see why they deserve their well-earned place in the sun.

SERVINI’S

After taking over Servini’s this time last year, owner Matt wanted to create something special - something that would allow him creative freedom whilst continuing to offer a high quality service to the loyal clientele that the well-established Wyndham Arcade favourite had earned over the years. By updating the style and upgrading the interior, Matt was able to put his own mark on the new business and rework the available space to provide a more comfortable experience to Servini’s customers, whether they enjoy sitting inside or outside.

“ Great value, home cooked food available seven days a week.”

Matt says, “The new look and feel are not the only things that Servini’s offer. We offer great value, home-cooked food available seven days a week, ranging from our very popular breakfasts and traditional Sunday roasts, plus gluten free and vegetarian dishes too.”

So check out the refurb, enjoy the amazing range of food, and don’t forget to mention City Life sent you.

Their legendary, multi-flavoured Welsh Cakes sell out like… well, hot cakes (we love the cherry ones). Plus locally roasted, high quality coffee. But one of the best things about Servini’s is its popular call and collect service. In need of some of their delicious food but in a rush? Simply give them a call, place your order, and let them know when you’ll want to pick it up - they’ll do the rest. It really is that simple. And best of all the orders can be customised so that you can always enjoy your favourite meal. 21

Family run Mediterranean restaurant Mia Porto Due is based in the Brewery Quarter and serves an impressive mix of authentic Portuguese fare and classic Italian cuisine. We caught up with Gianpiero just as he and his family were planning their brand new mid-day menu and happy hour…

MIA PORTO DUE

What is your background and when did you launch Mia Porto Due? We were one of the first Italian families in Cardiff to open restaurants (Fontana di Trevi, Jacksons and Caramella restaurants) and we’ve been in the business for over forty years now. We took over Portos, which was a famous Portuguese restaurant in St Mary Street in Cardiff, in 2008. We brought our own touch by introducing some infused Italian dishes which were very well received.

We relocated to the lively Brewery Quarter as we loved the location and, of course, the alfresco seating - we can now seat up to 40 outside and 55 inside our restaurant. When we relocated to the Brewery Quarter my first child was born so we re-named the restaurant Mia (my daughter’s name) Porto Due. Mia in Italian means mine. Who, or what, has influenced your cooking? That would be my Nonna (grandmother) who is from Parma in Italy, she influences our recipes a great deal. She taught my mother, who owned the fresh pasta shop Pastacara, how to cook; our traditional recipes go way back. The food smells gorgeous - what dishes do you serve here? We’re famous for our meat espetada these are meat kebabs which are cooked on our grill and served on metal hooks that hang from traditional stands which are locked to your table. 22

They’re drizzled in garlic butter which may be what you can smell. Another traditional dish from Madeira is our hot potato flat bread called Bolo do Caco. We also offer a hot volcanic stone grill that comes to your table ready for you to cook with your minted Welsh lamb; rump, sirloin or fillet steaks; or tuna. Our Chicken Piri Piri and the Frango Porto Due (chicken breast filled with mozzarella and topped with Parma ham, in a traditional tomato sauce) are very popular too. As you’d expect we have a wide range of pastas and risottos which are delicious, and our traditional pizzas are also hand-made with dough prepared daily in our kitchen then topped with 100% mozzarella, plum tomatoes and your choice from our extensive range of toppings. We also offer gluten free meals, and can cater to individual dietary requirements. All our desserts are home-made, and our home-made Nutella Cheesecake is one of the favourites, alongside our scrumptious Tiramisu.

Yum! Where do you source your ingredients and is this important to you? Absolutely; we source locally wherever possible - from the local markets such as Ashton’s fish market, McKenzie’s and Sullivan’s which are all based in Cardiff. For the Portuguese and Italian special dishes we import from those areas for the best available ingredients. Do you have anything new on the cards for the summer? Yes, our new mid-day menu will feature some new snack dishes and Italian ice-creams - and also our new happy hour which is 4.30pm to 6.30pm Mondays to Fridays and will include our sangria, wines and prosecco, and lagers. We have a fantastic half price day menu on every day of the week and also we have a very popular Sunday roast menu which is one course for £7.50, two courses for £10.00, and three courses for £12.50 - we’re always busy for that so do book if you can.

When we chatted with Gianpiero the sun was blazing so we were able to sit outside with our (very good) coffees and relax - although there is coverage to protect from the wind or rain if needed (well this is Wales). We spotted an impressive drinks menu, including a notable wine list, but we were working! However we’ll be back soon to try the espetada - we may see you there? Gianpiero’s older brother, Stefano, owns Stefano’s Restaurant in Pontcanna - which is also worth a visit if you haven’t been yet. 23

Madame Wax Reaches Finals of National Beauty Awards Following huge success during last year’s regional awards, Madame Wax is now celebrating national recognition. We had a chat with salon founder, Adele Sweet to get the low-down on her team’s latest achievement. Tell me more about these latest awards... It’s been a tough ride, but the team and myself were delighted to reach the finals of this year’s prestigious BABTAC & CIBTAC Awards – in two hotly contested categories. I was one of 12 finalists nominated for Waxing Therapist of the Year and the salon was amongst three shortlisted for Marketing Strategy of the Year. I think they were impressed by our commitment to building relationships with our clients and the fact that we’ve grown largely through word of mouth. We have the best clients – they’re always telling us they love what we do and we have the testimonials and feedback to prove it. What does it feel like to receive recognition at a national level? We were chuffed to win a Cardiff Life Award last year and I was named as Welsh Therapist of the Year too. But we’re always upping our game and are committed to raising the waxing bar. After all, we know the difference a seriously good wax makes to our clients. So being up there amongst the best in the country feels just brilliant.

I’m so pleased for our lovely clients who’ve supported us and for my brilliant team. How can our readers find out more? Simply check out our website at www.madamewax.com. We welcome lots of waxing newbies and promise to give you a treatment that leaves you feeling “ooh la la”. It’s our signature!

“I’ve tried a few wax salons in Cardiff and Madame Wax has been the best by far! The wax specialists are quick yet diligent, I always leave with great results. I highly recommend!” Shakeera Ahmum – one of 104 five-star Facebook reviews. 26/27 St Marys Street, Cardiff CF10 1AB 029 2023 2560 www.madamewax.com Like on Facebook, follow on Twitter

Happy Birthday Boutique 53; a fantastic ladies fashion boutique stocking gorgeous casual, smart and evening wear in Wellfield Road, Cardiff - and looking absolutely fabulous on our front cover. We couldn’t let this milestone anniversary pass without popping in to see owner Jayne Davies, and indulge in a spot of retail therapy - well it’d be rude not to…

BOUTIQUE 53

Congratulations on your first anniversary Jayne. Thank you very much, we’ve had an amazing first year, the time has absolutely flown. We’ve also recently purchased Poppers in Pontcanna, which will shortly be undergoing a full refurbishment, so it has been hectic as you can imagine – but so enjoyable. Can you tell us a bit about your background? Collectively my husband Julian and I have over 55 years’ experience in the fashion industry and retail. I’m also a qualified seamstress so I’m very picky about how clothes look and fit. Customers get a first class personal service here, and always an honest opinion - we want people to look and feel fabulous in our clothes. Do you have a typical customer? Not at all, we cater for everyone from 16 year olds looking for their first prom dress to ladies in their retirement.

We have a huge cross section of clothes collections ranging from casual wear right through to evening gowns; there’s something for everyone. We also stock a wide range of stunning day bags and evening wear handbags from Peach, and fabulous jewellery collections from Gaby’s and Eliza Gracious. These make perfect gifts - if you can bear to part with them. Our readers are always interested in what’s on trend - what’s flying out of Boutique 53 this summer? This summer has been all about bold floral prints! Our Robell trousers are also a huge hit with our customers. Our Marie Robell Trousers are our biggest seller, we carry every colour/shade and as well as being on trend they are also very reasonably priced at £39.

“Ranging from casual wear right through to evening gowns.” 26

Do you have a personal shopper service? Whether our customers are looking for the perfect outfit or an extra special gift for a loved one, our experienced friendly staff are on hand to offer helpful advice and styling tips. We pride ourselves on delivering excellent customer service and strive to make our ladies look and feel fabulous. We also have very comfy seats for the husbands! And last but not least, do you have any plans for the immediate future? We are now in our buying season for Spring/Summer 17; we buy collections nearly a year in advance so for the next 3 months we will carefully look at collections from all over the world to ensure we source the best styles for our customers. And for Poppers all we can think about now is the imminent refurbishment and the new and exciting collections that will soon be on the rails. Watch this space ladies.

Dr. Essam El-Fayoum started practising many years ago at home, advising on diet and nutrition. He became extremely popular, the business expanded, that’s when he decided to open a specialised business. First came personal training around three years ago, then the non-invasive liposuction was introduced. Inspire Health Centre now offers yoga, Pilates, massage, facials, oxygen therapy and a number of other beauty treatments. We chat to Sarah, Assistant Manager of the Centre who tells us more.

INSPIRE HEALTH CARE

Describe the team and their roles. Dr Essam is in charge of the diet and nutrition as well as the medical assessment before any programme is started. I’m the Assistant Manager and personal trainer and we have Claire, who is also a PT. I enjoy training people to lift heavier wights in the gym and then slow and controlled in Pilates. Claire enjoys fast-paced sweaty workouts, so there’s a good variety. Gaby and Angie are our beauty therapists, specialising in the oxygen therapy, facials and massage. Gaby’s facials are gorgeous and I’m told Angie’s Swedish massage is lovely and relaxing. All of us are trained in the non-invasive liposuction and we all regularly practise our skills on each other.

What services does Inspire Healthcare offer? Everything you would expect from a personal training studio and beauty salon and more! Why the change of name from The Weight Care Centre to Inspire Health Centre? We thought it was a bit specific. We have a lot of clients that no longer need to lose weight but want to maintain it, lift heavier or improve their stamina. The Weight Care Centre doesn’t really explain all that we do! Inspire Health Centre however sums up what we intend to do. I like to inspire people to live healthier lifestyles and, with the introduction of beauty therapies, we care about the whole person. It’s not all about the number on the scales. 30

Why should clients come to you over other gyms? The majority of our clientele started with us as they didn’t feel comfortable going to other gyms. Whether that was because they didn’t know what to do, wouldn’t push themselves enough, or felt self-conscious. That’s the beauty of Inspire Healthcare. The gym isn’t large; however, it has everything needed for a full body workout and, believe me, our customers would agree!

“ Brilliant team of people have helped me lose over 10Kg. Really enjoy com- ing each week and will be continuing for a long time.” Nicole Pacchiarini

CARDIFF

What Inspire Health Centre offers

“ Warm atmosphere, full of energy. The instructors are professional and friendly. Highly Recommended.” Luma Ibrahim

Non-Invasive Liposuction Ultrasound waves resonate at a certain frequency and cause the fat cells in a target area to break down, this released fat can then be used by the body for energy, however in order to receive the full effect this needs to be in conjunction with a calorie defi cit status (also known as a diet plan) as well as a set of fat burning exercises. The process also helps tighten the skin by improving its elasticity, reducing the appearance of stretch marks and cellulite. All this whilst being safe and pain free. Individualised Training This is a combination of resistance and cardio vascular exercises that are engineered to help maximise fat burning. In addition the exercises improve the cardiovascular system, increase the metabolism, improve blood circulation, joint function, bone density and improve the musculoskeletal system. Diet and Nutrition A tailored diet plan is essential when it comes to losing those extra few pounds, ours contains all of the macronutrients and micronutrients that the body needs in order to stay healthy and strong.

We limit the number of people in our classes to four in the gym and seven in Pilates and yoga; so you’re always guaranteed your form will be corrected, to get personal motivation and encouragement, while meeting likeminded people. Most of the daytime it’s just me in the gym so most of my clients get a very private session. Perfect for those with ailments/injuries, or don’t feel comfortable exercising in front of others. Nowadays though you can get a nice relaxing massage/facial after your sweaty session so that’s good encouragement to keep working hard. Being weighed weekly, nutritional information, exercises and relaxation all under one roof is perfect for this day and age busy lifestyles.

“ It is great to come to one place to get diet support, personal training and the latest lipo laser treatments. I never thought 13 weeks later I would still come twice a week. The results are worth it!” Jo Roberts

Massage Therapy Massage therapy is effective for the treatment of chronic back pain, with benefi ts lasting at least six months. Massage therapy also has additional benefi ts such as improvement of depression and anxiety, it can promote relaxation and sleep, and it can relieve muscular aches and pain. Massage can also have a positive impact on the immune system and improve the circulation. What is Oxygen Cellavie therapy? Our treatment enables oxygen together with active nutrients to pass through the natural gaps between the skin cells, improving the cells performance and external circulations. This stimulates the process of cell regeneration which ultimately makes skin look and feel younger.

If we were to ask you ‘on average, what one room in your house do you spend the most time in?’, you would probably guess the living room. You might be surprised to find that it is actually your kitchen.

JAM K ITCHENS

On average we spend up to 12% of our entire lives in the kitchen, whether we are cooking, eating, or simply hanging out whilst waiting for the kettle to boil. The kitchen has always been seen by many to be the very heart of the home. Which is why it is important that you should make the very best use of the space you have, and Jam Kitchens could be the company to help you with that. Located near Victoria Park in Canton, Jam Kitchens could help make your kitchen dreams a reality with a no obligation kitchen design service plus fitting if required. They really do pride themselves on offering the very best when it comes to fulfilling your wishes. If that is not enough, our very own Lewis Evans has recently taken advantage of what Jam Kitchens has to offer and this is what he thinks… Lewis, tell us about your experience with Jam Kitchens? I have recently purchased my very first property and was in need of a totally new kitchen. The one that was already there was almost non-existent and was in a very unusual place. After doing some research and comparing the prices of the different kitchen

companies in and around Cardiff I found that Jam Kitchens provided the best designs at the lowest, most costeffective price. I believe that people buy from nice people and Jason and Jose were an absolute pleasure to deal with. They bent over backwards to provide an excellent service throughout. What services did they provide and how long did it take? I needed a brand new kitchen so they designed it all from scratch! All the accessories from an induction hob, built-in fridge freezer, and electric fan oven, to the small details of brushed steel handles and taps. The most impressive part is the wooden frame that perfectly fits around the high gloss units. After only a few short meetings the kitchen had been fully designed and sent to order, and was delivered within two weeks - an incredibly quick turnaround as it had been designed to my specifications and, it couldn’t have been quicker if I’d needed it to be. Was it cost-effective and are you happy with the result? Yes, and yes. I could not be happier. The guys genuinely helped to keep the price within my budget and still managed to get me the best design I can’t thank them enough. 35

The kitchen is the centre piece of my home and now everyone comments on how beautiful it is. Several of my family and friends have been in contact with Jam Kitchens after seeing their work first hand. Is there anything you would change? To be totally honest, I wouldn’t change a thing. I love my new kitchen.

Established in 1949, Radiocraft is one of South Wales’ leading independent electrical retailers. We stopped to chat with Managing Director James Orchard, whose grandfather set up what is now the oldest independent electrical retail business in Cardiff.

OUR FRIENDS ELECTRIC James, why should Cardiff ’s City Life readers come to Radiocraft rather than other electrical retailers? Our key selling points are service and price. Our reputation for quality service, knowledge and low competitive prices has enabled us to provide an excellent shopping experience for all our customers for over 65 years. All of our staff receive a high level of training in both product knowledge and customer care to make sure you receive the highest possible level of service. We’re 100% confident that you will leave our store happy that you’ve purchased the perfect product to suit your requirements.

And how can you compete with the large chain stores on price? We check competitor price daily to make sure we are offering our customers the most competitive prices. We also offer an expert competitive installation of integrated appliances and cooking products (i.e. gas or electric cookers). A refreshing alternative to conventional office rental and services. Cardiff Accountants Johns Jones & Lo have always strived to provide a range of services to their clients which reflect good value. As a result of moving into their new offices, they have expanded their services to provide high quality/ cost effective virtual office and conference facilities coupled with real time secretarial and administration support. City Life chats with Partner, David Lo.

FLEXIBLE SOLUTIONS

David, what is a virtual office space and how does it work? A virtual office space provides small businesses with a professional address, call answering services plus access to administration facilities and meeting space without having to pay fixed overhead costs. In addition, we can provide secretarial/administrative support within conferences to take and draft minutes. Our existing clients are already benefiting from having this facility available. What are the benefits of using a virtual office? Aside from the main benefit of minimising costs, a virtual office will greatly benefit the business person on the move, or who works from home, especially if a simple ‘address only’ service is required for receiving post and phone calls. It gives the professional image that the business has an office base without having the actual full costs of an office - business owners who use our services will reap the benefits of keeping their outgoings to a minimum while maintaining their air of professionalism.

And what services are on offer here for your clients? Our virtual office option includes receiving incoming post and telephone calls and redirection of these to the client, plus conference facilities in one of our three air conditioned boardrooms with refreshments if required. “ A virtual office will greatly benefit the business person on the move, or who works from home.

In the world of business, change is happening at such a pace that business owners may be tempted to look for guidance from the stars! However, if you really want to see what’s in the future, instead of star gazing, just look a little closer to home - to the Cloud. Janet Ballard of Lewis Ballard Accountants is a big fan.

A HEAD IN THE CLOUD Cloud accounting has been gaining fans for several years, which isn’t surprising as it really fits seamlessly into our growing need for instant and accessible information. We now remotely access our emails, social media and bank accounts throughout the day, so doesn’t it make sense to also access up to date information on our business performance as and when we need it too?

So what is Cloud Accounting and why all the fuss? The Cloud is a secure platform that makes data and software accessible online anytime, anywhere, from any device. Your hard drive is no longer the central hub and, unlike traditional accounting software, you are not tied to a single office or desk. For a simple example of Cloud technology, just think about when you use internet banking. Every time you access this data, you’re using the Cloud.

As with everything new it’s natural to be cautious, but it’s one of the most secure ways to store information as no data exists locally - it’s all online, protected by powerful encryption. You don’t risk a lost laptop or memory stick messing up your plans or putting your confidential information in jeopardy, instead it’s safe, secure and available as and when you need it.

At Lewis Ballard Accountants, we passionately believe Cloud Accounting is the future for any business aiming to grow and prosper. So, as well as training our team on most Cloud Accounting systems, we have teamed up with market leader XERO to become Gold members, giving our clients access to not only what we consider the best software available, but also the best advice and support.

How does this help businesses? Well if you want your business to work smarter and faster, Cloud Accounting is the way to go. It will give you a better overview of your finances and, more importantly, the information you need to make those timely decisions that keep you ahead of your competitors.

You no longer need to rush back to the office for important information, instead you access it by laptop, tablet or smartphone anywhere. And why stop there? You’ll soon find yourself raising invoices and chasing payment whilst grabbing a coffee! No need to spend hours typing in bank transactions, instead they automatically upload through a secure bank feed and why not upload your receipts as you shop too?

“The Cloud is a secure platform that makes data and software accessible online anytime.” 40

“At Lewis Ballard Accountants, we passionately believe Cloud Accounting is the future for any business aiming to grow and prosper.”

“The future isn’t in the stars… it’s in the Cloud!” You won’t have to visit your accountant’s office when considering borrowing money or an expensive purchase, only to wait anxiously for weeks while they work through your papers to give you answers. Instead you can both log in simultaneously and talk through your figures in real-time. Even from opposite sides of the world!

Once you use it you will soon see having your head in The Cloud is for serious business and not just day dreamers.

You accountant can regularly review your figures to eliminate bookkeeping problems and identify trends, so you can react swiftly to any downturns or pounce as opportunities arise. Or even to give you a simple pat on the back for doing so well. Lewis Ballard Celtic House, Caxton Place, Pentwyn Cardiff CF23 8HA 029 2073 5502 info@lewisballard.co.uk www.lewisballard.co.uk

One final consideration… With the looming HMRC digital regime in 2018, you will have to submit digital accounts and tax information quarterly and pay any tax each time. Your accountant can log in, make expert adjustments and ensure you avoid costly errors, saving you unnecessary tax.

Tidy Studio is a design and branding company based in Cardiff, proud of their roots and passionate about their work. We caught up with owner Tim Harling…

K EEP DESIGN TIDY!

Tim, when did you set up Tidy Studio? Tidy Studio was set up in 2007 following my relocation to Cardiff. Having worked in design and marketing agencies for over 20 years in London, Copenhagen, Bath and Bristol, I decided to utilise my knowledge, passion and experience in branding and packaging to set up a design studio. The idea of setting up on my own, in my homeland had always been a strong ambition since graduating. Throughout my agency days, I had discovered that working more closely with clients had produced the best results and most satisfying work. There was more clarity in terms of understanding what the client was looking for and a feeling of trust that the right work would be delivered. We love your business name. We have to ask – we’re Cardiff after all - what does the word ‘Tidy’ mean to you? Funny you should ask this as we recently created a short vox pop style video asking the people of Cardiff the same question . We met some great characters and had some fantastic responses,

it was also extremely good fun to make. Visit our Facebook page to check it out. To us, Tidy means two things. The first is ‘positivity’ in terms of a reaction to something. I grew up in Caerphilly and spent a lot of my youth in and around the Valleys. The word is very representative of my personality. The second part relates more to the work…‘everything in the right place’ a very considered approach to the design process. Where do you draw your inspiration? Inspiration can literally come from anywhere and anything… looking round a record shop, walking through town or going for a run around Roath Park. At the start of each project we always carry out a ‘Discovery’ stage which allows us complete freedom to explore lots of different ideas and draw inspiration from anywhere. Recently we created a brand for a new restaurant in Bradford on Avon and found ourselves researching different weaving techniques. That’s part of the reason we love what we do. 44

What do you think are the most important qualities in a graphic designer? The ability to listen is very important. The more you listen and ask the right questions, the better the information you will get to inform your work. It only takes one word from a client to spark an idea which can lead to an infinite number of creative expressions. Communication is also very important. Part of being a designer is ‘selling’ your ideas to the client; if you can deliver your thinking clearly and passionately then the client is more likely to ‘buy into’ your work. Can you talk us through the design stages? We have 4 key stages which we have branded DEEP™ (Discover, Establish, Express, Produce) This allows us to work methodically, but also helps the client understand our process and feel part of the creative journey.

Discover Lots of questions are asked...here we are looking specifically at what the client is looking to achieve from the work identifying budgets and expectations.

n

Establish We identity the key work deliverables necessary and create an overall project plan to follow.

n

Express This is the creative part of the journey. Generating lots of ideas. We develop design concepts and refine our ideas as we progress to reach the approved solution. This normally contains a number of creative development stages.

n

Produce At this stage we implement the work we have already created, through whichever media is required; project managing the process and liaising with third party suppliers as required.

n

Does a strict brief stifle your creativity? We are always at our best when we get some flexibility in terms of a brief.

There are common restrictions such as budget and time, but quite often the most challenging briefs are the most open. It’s our job to then really understand and question the client to get a clear picture of what they are looking for. The easiest jobs are ones where you are simply following brand guidelines. We view every job as a creative challenge and always deliver the best work we can under the circumstances. Can you tell us about your favourite piece of work? This is a very difficult question as we like different projects for different reasons. One of my most recent favourites was a studio based project. For our studio Christmas gifts last year we literally brewed, branded and packaged our own craft beer. With the help of a friendly neighbour and a few (sober) late nights we produced a small batch from a farm in West Wales. We’re very proud of the project and have had some great feedback from our clients. Watch this space.

45

And last but not least, what are your plans for the future? The primary focus of the business so far has been on building a strong portfolio of work and a consistent client base. We have a number of plans for the future which include creating and licensing our own FMCG brands, growing the creative team and promoting ourselves internationally. We have a number of very successful projects to shout about, such as Seriously Tasty, a food brand which we created for Peter’s Food Service and launched in 2014. The brand has seen phenomenal growth in volume of 919% over the past year.

CF24 was born from travels within the festival and bar scenes. Years of running bars led owner Clive Drinkwater to an understanding of what can be achieved with what some people consider junk or rubbish. And so the bar / restaurant was lovingly created using as much upcycled items wherever possible.

CF24 PROJECT

Clive says, “That’s why it’s called CF24 Project; from concept it was always a project, and we want to continually change bits and pieces within the venue as we grow to meet our changing market.” It is truly amazing that such an inspiring space has been created and it seems that it is being put to very good use with some very exciting events being hosted there. From small pop-up DJ slots to fringe theatre performances, a large projector screen for big sporting events to a full sound system for live performances, CF24 Project can host it all.

“ We wanted to build a bar/restaurant upcycling what we could, wherever possible.”

To match their quirky venue and ethos they have also developed a drinks menu that fits with the location. Alongside the usual finds there are also beverages that give back; they have a Welsh brewed IPA by Big Hug that saves a square of rainforest every time you buy a pint, and Elephant Gin that puts a percentage of its profit towards saving endangered elephants. This isn’t restricted to their spirits as they also offer Karma Cola that gives proceeds back to the farmers who grew the allnatural ingredients. Their lovely, good nature is also present in their food which is locally sourced whenever possible and also accommodates vegetarians and vegans with alternative dishes. CF24 Project is a brilliant idea and just goes to show, in the words of the Grinch, “One man’s trash is another man’s potpourri.” 46

It’s been eighteen months and business at Precision Hair Design is going from strength to strength! City Life Magazine caught up with Artistic Director Lawrence Taylor of the highly acclaimed, award winning hair and beauty salon in Cardiff to find out a little more. Firstly Lawrence, we must say the salon is looking stunning, you must be so pleased? Thank you - I’m thrilled with it! I have always had a vision of how I wanted my own salon to look, and this is it. In fact, several years ago I put together a ‘mood board’ - it’s still sat on my desk to this day! It really is lovely to be living my dream and to recently be awarded the prestigious ‘Five Star Salon’ award from the Good Salon Guide has been one of the highlights of my year! Congratulations. Why don’t you tell us about yourself? Sure! I started my career at a very young age, originally just on a Saturday assisting, but quickly realised that this was going to be my vocation - I just became addicted! While growing up, I’d be in the salon at every possible opportunity - whether it was just sweeping up or spending time talking to clients and making them smile. Whilst I loved it with a passion, there was always this long held ambition that I didn’t want to abandon - I had always wanted to teach! It was my first boss, Gaynor, who is still a close friend and mentor, who suggested that I could combine my two big passions in life and that I could teach hairdressing. This was a revelation to me and it all fell into place quite quickly after that. Hairdressers are some of the kindest and most patient people I have ever met. My colleagues stand behind a chair for hours on end, because they want to make people happy. I have always loved that about this industry. Over time I worked my way up until eventually I opened my first salon on Whitchurch Road, which was a fantastic success. In fact we quickly built up a loyal clientele and after three years it was time to expand, and thus Precision was born! Teaching to hairdressing, bit of a shift in vocations? Not as big as you might think. Every day I spend time with my clients giving them a great cut and colour and educating them on how to get the best out of their hair.

“We never stop! We’re in the business of making people feel and look good.”

M AKING THE CUT It was a natural progression for me to start sharing my knowledge with other hairdressers, in a classroom setting and on the bigger stage, all over the country. Opportunities appear to present themselves all the time and I was recently asked to become the ambassador for the scissor company, Kanpeki, and am really looking forward to working closely with them. What makes you and Precision Hair Design different? We never stop! We’re in the business of making people feel and look good, and consequently we are constantly updating our services and training our staff. For me it’s all about the consultation. A good stylist is a good communicator, and listener. It is fundamental to everything we do that we take time to discuss each individual client’s lifestyle, listen to their needs and any issues they may have, and teach them how to maintain their style at home. It’s wonderful when you build up that trusting relationship between client and stylist. It’s also important to give back. I am honoured to be able to work alongside Racoon International, working with ‘Hair In Recovery’, a hair extension programme, endorsed by a leading 47

trichologist for people who have suffered through medical hair loss as well as post cancer hair transformations. Your hair is your crowning glory and for many people losing their hair through illness, or while undergoing treatment such as chemotherapy, is a shocking experience. If I can make a difference to these people, I will.

“I love this industry.” What’s the best piece of hairdressing advice you’ve been given? An incredibly talented hairdresser and great friend of mine, Raqui, once said to me whilst working in a salon: “Smile honey – you’re on stage!” I have never forgotten this. That’s why I love this industry. We get to come to work and make people feel amazing everyday. What’s not to love? One of the joys of working on Vale Life is meeting new and interesting people with a story to tell. Mr and Mrs Les Jones welcomed us into their beautiful home in Rhyd-Y-Pandy Road, Swansea.

HOUSE OF FUN

Mr and Mrs Jones are lucky enough to live in a beautiful, secluded setting. The property sits within immaculate grounds, with its own lake (and resident geese!). In their heyday, the couple hosted regular parties with friends and family. The pool was a big part of the fun as was (and still is) the well-stocked bar! So when it came to changing their existing timber doors and windows to aluminium bifolds, the Jones’s had no hesitation in turning to Alexander James Bifolds.

“ The downtime and mess were minimal. We feel that the workmanship was first class. The men were pleasant, helpful and extremely clean and tidy.”

How did you hear about Alexander James Bifolds? We had worked with the company a number of years ago when they changed the timber windows in our lounge to aluminium. We were so pleased with their work, that we were happy to work with them again when we wanted aluminium windows to replace our wooden ones which open out to our indoor pool and those in our bar area. How did the project go? It only took a few days to complete. It was a fairly straight-forward job and the downtime and mess were minimal. We feel that the workmanship was first class. The men were pleasant, helpful and extremely clean and tidy. Were you pleased with the overall effect? We are absolutely delighted with the completed work. The old windows had become worn and tired and we wanted to change them to go with the windows in the rest of the house. 48

Alexander James were also able to match the same colour green as the windows in the rest of the house. What difference have the doors made to the way you live and use the pool room and bar area? It has made both rooms a lot lighter, more secure, with no draughts and in keeping with the rest of the house. We are more than pleased with them. We don’t hold parties like we used to, but we do enjoy having our extended family here for Christmas and holidays. Would you be happy to recommend them to friends and colleagues? We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Alexander James to others.

Annie Cartwright, Director, Skin and Face Clinics, is staying ahead of the latest best practice in aesthetics after joining over 1,000 other global experts to share the latest cutting edge techniques at the first International Allergan Medical Institute Conference in London.

FACING THE FUTURE

So what did you learn that would be helpful for those considering any aesthetic treatment? It’s always stimulating to be surrounded by so many people who are at the top of their field, and with so much expertise present I always pick up some new information. I was really inspired by sporting legend Sebastian Coe who rounded off the conference by telling us how, in the sporting world, the small incremental changes and improvements athletes make in their training can bring a big overall difference to their performance. This has major parallels in medical aesthetic treatments. Everyone is a work in progress but, using the latest techniques, trained experts come to know which areas of the face to treat for the biggest impact. As treatments become ever more discrete and refined, a number of small tweaks, when added together, can be very impactful. Often patients look at before and after photographs of themselves and they can’t always put their finger on what has changed but they know they look a lot better!

What training does a practitioner need to have to be able to give discrete, but impactful results? After years of specialist training and experience you come to know the whole anatomical architecture of the face. This means you can apply a system of injecting, using cutting edge best practice, that prioritises the areas for treatment in order to get the desired results, and best suit the patient’s budget. A big advance in this was the development of the eight point lift - this has now been further developed into a whole injecting system called the MD Codes. Annie not only offers these techniques in her own clinics but trains other doctors, dentists and nurses in these techniques.

to achieve the improvement and stay looking natural. The best thing is to ask for professional and expert advice about what small changes they think could bring you the desired result. What do you love about your work? I am so pleased to have welcomed so many new clients to the clinic since we opened our doors for the first time, and we have recently celebrated our second anniversary in the Coach House in Llandaff. Our discreet premises have helped me to offer the best possible service to my patients in a clean clinical and welcoming environment.

Patients are increasingly considering whole face rejuvenation, not just the treatment of one line on its own, because they know that several small improvements in the right places can make a big overall difference to how they look. So how should people approach a consultation? Of course every consultation should be a two way process. Patients will often know what lines they want to improve but maybe not the best way 51

Doesn’t time fly? We can hardly believe it’s been a year since The Radyr Court opened its doors under new ownership; we popped along for a catch up (and a very lovely lunch) with the owners…

THE R ADYR COURT

Congratulations on your first anniversary guys. Thank you, we can hardly believe it’s been a year ourselves - it’s been both challenging and very exciting, and we look forward to hosting many more great times. A little bird tells us you have a new Head Chef – can you tell us a bit about that, and how has the food changed since his appointment? Yes we’re very fortunate to have Del Ashun join us and manage our kitchen - he was previously the Sous Chef at acclaimed Cardiff restaurant The Clink and has taken our food offerings to another level. Also Andrew Morgan has joined us from the Marriott Hotel; Andrew was previously the Sous Chef at the Saint Pierre Golf Club in Chepstow. The feedback from our customers is very positive and as well as our a la carte menus we’re also serving great

bar food, and lots of bespoke buffets for the many private functions and parties we’re hosting.

We are also going to host a monthly dinner and show event, featuring great acts which will be special.

Which brings us nicely to our next question - we’ve heard about your new club, The Jury Room, can you tell us about that? Yes, The Jury Room is a private suite on the first floor that can hold up to 120 people for a variety of events and special occasions, ranging from business & corporate meetings, through to weddings and special family occasions of all types. We work with our customers to tailor the event accordingly to be able to host the perfect event. It is a great feeling to bring to life a truly enjoyable and memorable occasion from the initial first enquiry.

We have also recently fitted a very large projector screen for sporting events, parties (guests can provide a USB memory card of pictures and videos to make their occasion very special), We’re currently showing the Euro 2016 games here, packaged with a meal and drinks, and are delighted to say they’re going down a storm - so much so that we’ll be showing all the major sporting events for the foreseeable future.

“It’s been both challenging and very exciting.” 52

That sounds great, and we can see you have a brand new garden with a lovely children’s play area. Yes, our garden is now a lovely area, just in time for the summer and it’s terrific to see families and kids enjoying themselves once again in the Radyr Court.

We have a large al-fresco dining area and can seat 140 in our garden, and the children’s play area features swings, slides, a playhouse, and a grassed area for the kids to run off steam while Mum & Day enjoy their drinks. Is there anything else new that we may have missed? Yes, we have a BBQ smoker for outdoor family days during the summer months, and we’ll be arranging bouncy castles to be here for the kids during the warmer weather too. It all sounds excellent. If you’re looking for somewhere cool to hold a function, enjoy some live entertainment, watch the Euros on a large screen, or just somewhere to sit in the sunshine with great food (we can recommend the burgers), pop in to see the team at The Radyr Court in Danescourt - and let them know we sent you.

Is this the real life? Or is this just fantasy? We can confirm it’s real as we are happy to announce the recent opening of Ffandangos, Llandaff ’s newest fine food store and green grocers, with an emphasis on Welsh and organic produce. We scaramouched on over to take a look.

FFANDANGOS

With a name based on Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, one of the greatest rock anthems of all time, owner Dylan has set a very high bar for himself, one that he easily clears. Originating from Llanrwst in North Wales, fluent Welsh speaker Dylan came to Cardiff University to study Mechanical Engineering and ended up staying after he graduated becoming a self employed builder in the years that followed. Some time later he met Llandaff lass Jo and the rest, as they say, is history. Fast forward to the 27th of June 2016 and, after years of conversations and an opportunity that was too good to miss, Dylan is celebrating the opening of his new shop Ffandangos, just three months after the birth of his second son. A fine food and organic green grocer store created so that the people of Llandaff could finally have access to quality organic fruit and vegetables, Welsh goods and deli products without having to travel out of the village. Whilst Jo is busy running her own business - Hairhouse found only two doors down from Ffandangos - Dylan has sought the help of his right hand man Hywel (locally known as ‘H’and

also a Welsh speaker) in addition to both his brother and Jo’s brother in order to make sure that the new business perfectly complements the existing businesses in the area whilst adding something that little bit different. Offering high quality, organic fruit and vegetables supplied by expert farmers in addition to a full deli counter supplied mostly by longstanding family friends ‘Blas ar Fwyd’ from Llanrwst, delectable Coaltown coffee from Ammanford, cake, Mario’s Welsh Ice Cream, ‘Chilli of the Valley’ made by local friend Dan, and Ffandangos very own handmade in Wales sweets, which can all be enjoyed in the quirky seating area. Although they have only just opened Dylan and Jo already have their sights locked on the future and what it has in store for Ffandangos. “Our priority in the immediate future is to develop a delivery service for the local area and beyond as well as start to create our own range of food. We also have some great gift ideas for foodies including hampers and gift bags. Aside from that we are just so happy that Ffandangos is finally a reality. 55

We are especially proud to stock organic quinoa baby food and coco caravan vegan chocolate which is delicious. We love our display of jarred traditional sweets which we will refill with the same sweet at a discounted price! To celebrate our new venture with us why not pop in and enjoy some of our Coaltown Coffee? It’s on us!” “Where will we be in ten years time? Who knows? Anyway the wind blows!”

With a recent refurbishment and exciting Christmas and New Year offering to shout about, we chat to Richard Rees, Regional Sales Manager, Mercure Cardiff Holland House Hotel and Francis Hotel in Bath to find out more.

MERCURE CARDIFF HOLLAND HOUSE HOTEL

What does your role involve? No day is the same in my role! I can be in a strategic business meeting one minute then, the next, I am having lunch with a potential client, trying to win business for the hotel. My role is so varied and is very much a ‘people’ role - I have to build strong working relationships so that clients have the confidence that the hotel will deliver on my promises. What is your background? I would be seen as a ‘hospitality professional’ as I have worked in the hotel industry since the age of fourteen (which meant I didn’t have to go down the mines). I started my career as a waiter and, over time, have worked my way through all departments, which means I have felt the pressure of operations, and appreciate what the staff on the front line have to deliver on a daily basis. I have recently returned to the hotel world and, more importantly, back to Holland House, following a five year stint working for a venue finding and event management company.

This gave me great insight into the ‘other side’ of the industry and, again, an extremely varied role. I was recognised within the Industry by the HBAA (Hotel Bookings Agents Association) in 2009 where I was presented with the Tim Gasson Award, for outstanding contribution to the association and to the industry as a whole. What do you love about your job? The ‘people’ are what I love about my job most - whether it’s the teams I work with or the clients I am meeting. If you are not a ‘people’ person my role is not for you! Please tell us about the recent refurbishment programme. This started in 2014 with the transformation and renaming of the Calon Suite, and was completed in 2015 with the makeover of all 165 bedrooms and suites, plus the total change for the Urban Bar & Kitchen. The process behind the refurbishment programme was to transform the hotel in keeping with the local area, and to give the hotel a feel of Cardiff and its heritage and surroundings. 56

With Christmas not far away, what is the Mercure offering? Sparkle In The Snow, is the theme for the 2016 Christmas Party Season! Guests will be greeted with a Christmas Cocktail, followed by a sumptuous three course Christmas menu, an all-inclusive drinks offering (selected drinks only) and entertainment supplied by Boutique Disco. We also have a Party Lunch offer for those who prefer to start earlier in the day! Relax and enjoy Lunch with us on Christmas Day, or bring in 2017 with our Big Macs Wholly Soul Party. Why would Mercure make the perfect Christmas party booking? Whether it be a large private party, or whether you’d like to ‘join a party’, Mercure Cardiff Holland House is the place to be. The feedback on the theme, food and entertainment at last year’s events, has meant people have already booked for 2016 and places are filling up fast. Following our Launch Party on the 30th June we hope to be welcoming many more party revellers to the hotel this year.

Tell us about your chefs and the food offering… Food should always be at the forefront of everybody’s mind when it comes to Christmas Parties, as most people have low expectations of catering when large parties are being catered for. The quality of the food means that people return to the hotel time after time - our Chefs are involved in the decisions when we compile the menu so that they can lovingly, and knowingly, prepare the food for our customers. Our kitchen brigade is very experienced and the chefs have years of knowledge when creating the culinary delights on offer. What about the costs? Our Christmas Party Nights start from £45 per person, with our Party Lunches starting from £16 per person. Are you offering Christmas/New Year packages? If so, what are they? We have both Christmas and New Year’s Residential Packages for 2016, the Three Night Christmas Package starts on 24th December (£277 per person), sharing a twin or double room, and includes accommodation, breakfast,

five course lunch on Christmas Day, and a whole host of other things to help you enjoy the festive period. New Year’s Eve sees the return of Big Mac’s Wholly Soul Band providing the coolest sounds around. £75 per person includes live entertainment, boutique disco and a Gala Dinner. Make a night of it for £146 per person sharing a twin or double room inclusive of breakfast and on New Year’s Day you can relax and use the health club! Where do your customers come from geographically? With Cardiff being such a vibrant and cultural city, our geographic customer spread is worldwide. We have a large number of customers from the UK, and some very local too. If we have a large local Awards Dinner taking place at the hotel, we even have customers stay who live in Cardiff!

“ Relax and enjoy Lunch with us on Christmas Day.” 57

What do you think makes the Mercure special at Christmas and at any other time of the year? Mercure Cardiff Holland House has it all. The quality of the product, service and food, coupled with the amazing refurbishment just makes it an ideal venue for all occasions. Whether it’s an intimate dinner with friends in the Urban Bar & Kitchen or a banquet for 450 people you are sure of a warm Welsh welcome from a knowledgeable and friendly team. I am delighted to ‘be home’ and can assure customers old and new we are committed to you.

Sally Evans, owner of Boutique Box says that the majority of her customers come from Cardiff and the Welsh valleys, which is surprising given that her boutique is based in Talbot Green. We asked Sally why she thought this was.

BOUTIQUE BOX

Where do the majority of your customers come from? You would think that they would come from the Vale and, whilst many do, the majority appear to come from Cardiff and the Valleys. When we ask them, they said it’s because you can’t buy our brands on the high street and they are exclusive to us at Boutique Box, which means that they are unlikely to see someone else in the same outfit at an event and that they are more likely to stand out from the crowd. Doesn’t every woman want to do that? What brands do you stock? We love our brands and we are always on the lookout for new, exciting ones.

Currently we have Daisy May, Carla Ruiz, Mascara, Dynasty and Nataliya. We also offer a lovely range of accessories and jewellery. What sets Boutique Box apart? I believe what makes this boutique stand out is that we are constantly looking for more European styles and we strive to be different. Boutique Box’s newest find is Eastern European with a very couture look and feel - but still at a reasonable price. Do you cater for all sizes? Boutique Box attracts customers of all ages, from teenagers to the more mature lady. Also, all sizes are catered for from 8 to 24. 60

What do customers love about Boutique Box? Our mantra is to help keep customers look and feel both youthful and beautiful - and these two recent comments agree! “Not only are the outfits beautiful but Sally takes the time to get to know each and every one of her clients, their wardrobe needs and style preferences.” Natalie Bell Boutique Box 22 Stuart Terrace, Talbot Green Pontyclun CF72 8AA

“Every visit to Shades offers a professional and welcoming experience.

Nail Divas is an uber chic nail bar and beauty salon in Whitchurch, Cardiff. While it may look like an ordinary nail bar on the surface few people realise that it’s actually part of a charity called Fourteen-A. Set up originally as a mobile business in December 2002 it now boasts a nail bar, a state of the art mobile unit called Vanicures, and also a training company that offers funded and part funded vocational courses.

NAIL DIVAS

Sian, can you tell us a bit about how you came to set up your businesses? Nail Divas was launched in December 2002 as a totally mobile service. The business grew very quickly and within the year I had taken on a number of technicians to work for me. However I soon realised that they still needed training and because I was already a qualified and experienced teacher, I set about doing this myself. Others soon got to hear that I was teaching nail technology and in came referrals from other salons, Careers Wales and DWP. Do you still offer training here at your salon? We offer a complete range of nail technology, beauty therapy and holistic courses. We even teach to international competition standard in nails, specialising in 3D Acrylic. Courses include waxing, tanning, manicure, eyelash tinting and threading plus many more.

How did you come to set up your charity ‘Fourteen-A Ltd’? I recognised that the work we were doing was predominantly as a social enterprise and so set up Fourteen-A Ltd which became a registered charity in May 2012. Our aim is to inspire disadvantaged young people and adults across Wales and help them to achieve their career ambitions. We have a beauty therapy course starting in September which is part funded by The DM Thomas Foundation for Young People. It is open to all applicants but priority is for the under 25s from East Cardiff. You can email info@naildivas. co.uk for an application form and further details.

We’ve seen your fabulous ‘Vanicures’ van - how did that come about? Well one of the biggest problems we experienced over the years was finding work experience for our students, so when I was offered an old Ford Transit Welfare van last year I jumped at the chance. I’ve always wanted to develop a truly mobile nail service this was a dream come true. We totally re-fitted the van and it can be now taken out on the road to any venue which has the space for a pop up nail salon.

“ Amazing salon and service.”

We can tell you’re very busy - but do you have any plans for the future? Yes, I’m currently planning an additional range of mobile services, concentrating this time on the lads. I’m not going to give the game away just yet by revealing the name but once I have our trademark I promise to tell you all about it. We’ll be keeping an eye on Nail Diva’s Facebook page for that – but in the meantime we’re just popping in for a cheeky manicure.

Now located at 36 West Bute Street, CBC is strong in both its purpose and mission. Our aim is to always explain clearly the objectives of chiropractic care and what patients seeking chiropractic services may expect. It is important to us that our clients and their families understand the role that chiropractic could play in their health care needs. CBC is now made up of 11 team members and we are delighted to introduce our three Chiropractors to you.

Summertime is the perfect time to grow the perfect addition to your seasonal meals - herbs. For some reason we tend to think there is a mystery involved in growing herbs that we can use in every day cooking. What’s hot in the herb world this summer? We ask our resident gardening expert, Rob Hodge.

THYME TO GROW

Most herbs are easy to grow and the easiest way of growing the majority of them is to buy small pots of young plants from the garden centre or even your local supermarket veg section. They can be potted on into larger pots to grow indoors, on a patio, or outdoors in the garden. Many herbs are very ornamental and, when added to your flower beds and borders, look fabulous and add a splash of classic gardening know-how to show off with. Some herbs such as basil and coriander can be grown simply by sowing seed in a pot, letting them grow big enough to cut and use, then wait for them to do it all again. OUR HERB TOP TEN

Easy to grow herbs Here are ten easy-to-grow herbs that will impress your friends and improve your everyday menu: Mint - as long as you grow it in a pot to contain its roots, it will grow indefinitely. It’s vital for flavouring meat dishes such as lamb and adding a kick to cocktails. Marjoram/Oregano - both related by name and an herbaceous perennial that dies back in the winter. It’s a must in every single Italian recipe. Basil - an annual you can grow from seed on your windowsill and is the standard green leaf partner for tomatoes. Chives - a small bulb and a member of the onion family, best grown outside in a pot or in a garden border, the more you cut it the more it comes back. Use it in omelettes, soups and salads.

Coriander - another easy to grow annual and another to grow on the windowsill. It’s used in Asian and Chinese curries and you’ll find that you can’t live without it!

Parsley - whether it’s the curly or the flat leaved variety, it’s a herb for everyday use in your food. Buying it as a small plant and potting it on is the easiest way to go with this one.

Sage - a hardy shrub that can be grown in a pot or in the border and that vital ingredient of stuffing mixes.

Bay - the noble laurel, used to flavour curries and other spicy dishes. In the garden it can be grown as a large shrub or clipped into classical shapes, either way it provides thousands of leaves to use in your cooking.

Thyme - another hardy shrub from the Mediterranean, great to use in soups and stews and easy to grow in the garden providing it has a bit of winter protection. Rosemary - a medium height shrub that deserves to be grown close to the kitchen, or even right next to the barbeque! A must with a roast lamb dinner.

“Some herbs such as basil and coriander can be grown simply by sowing seed in a pot.” 69

There’s no set procedure to growing herbs. They can be grown individually or mixed together, in pots or borders. It’s all about discovery, food and fun. Give it a go, you’ll be surprised!

If you’re suffering from a chronic medical condition and you feel that conventional medicine isn’t working for you, then you might wish to consider a different approach.

TRIED & TESTED Anne Rodgers from Penarth describes herself simply as a healer and she appears to be having amazing results. Vale Life speaks to one of her clients who tell us how Anne helped him overcome a life threatening illness. How did you hear about Anne? My wife Pat saw Anne for healing back in May 2007 when she diagnosed a blockage in the lymphatic system which was causing the destruction of all of her organs. The hospital had diagnosed nonHodgins Lymphoma and wanted her to have a course of chemotherapy. My wife chose to go down the alternative route and Anne treated her twice a week until the issues resolved. What made you go to Anne? Pat and I run three dance clubs. On one evening, I noticed one of the fluorescent tubes not working, so I got the steps out to change the 6ft tube. I got the tube in the socket at one end but I strained to get the other end in and, as it went in, I could feel my energy drain down my legs, and I felt physically drained, and we were only half way through the dance! We started the second half, I announced the dance, but I couldn’t remember the steps. Pat was telling me what I should be doing but it did not register. I went to bed that night but couldn’t sleep. When I got out of bed in the morning I was no better. My legs were weak and trembling. I had no appetite. I’m usually in excellent health. I always got up early and would exercise before breakfast and now I felt a wreck and was starting to have panic attacks. We had to stop dancing.

After two weeks and no signs of improvement, Pat called the doctor. I was examined and blood tests were ordered. The tests revealed a very high PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) reading of 3000 - high readings normally are cancerous. Also my sodium was dangerously low at 120 (133 is considered normal). My urination was slow - not good. Once I told her of these issues and my tests from the hospital, Anne concentrated on the problem. Describe the experience you felt while Anne worked on you. I wish I did see the colours that Pat tells me she experienced, or the heat and movement of limbs that she felt but I don’t. Maybe I’m not made that way - I don’t know. All I know is that I’m getting better and that’s all t hat matters.

How are you now? My very high PSA levels have dramatically improved - much to the astonishment of the doctors. They have gone from 3,000 to 1,000 and 6.4 to 4.7. My sodium level is also significantly improving (Anne advised a packet of sea salt crisps a day). I feel so much better in myself and we even plan on dancing again in September. It will be a birthday celebration! How do the Doctors feel about you seeing an alternative practitioner? They are aware that I do not want a third Prostap injection (oestrogen) because of the unpleasant side effects. We have also told them about how Anne cured Pat’s cancer over yen years ago. 70

They are happy for me to have the healing as long as I submit myself for blood samples, so that they can monitor my PSA levels. COULD ANNE HELP YOU? Anne Rodgers has asked us to stress that she treats each case individually and that if she feels she cannot help someone, she will tell them at the outset. Anne has written a book about her journey, which includes testimonials of the people she’s helped. If you would like a copy of the book, please send a cheque for £12 payable to Anne Rodgers, C/o Good Life Publishing, The Business Centre, Cardiff House, Cardiff Road, Vale of Glamorgan CF63 2AW. For more information on Anne, the book and her work, please visit www. annerodgershealer.co.uk Vale Life cannot endorse any medical treatment. Readers should always consult a medical professional before embarking on any treatment and take responsibility for decisions that affect their own health or wellbeing. COST OF CANCER BALL

Monies raised for very worthy cause Cost of Cancer held their 2nd annual charity ball on the 14th May 2016 in Blancos Hotel in Port Talbot. They raised a huge £4800 on the night with help from Andrew Thomas the auctioneer from HRT Estate Agents. There was a fantastic atmosphere with music from Omega Blend. Nicky Moss the Founder and Emma Thomas one of the trustees would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who came. Cost of Cancer helps cancer patients and their families with the financial implications that not many people think about when they’re diagnosed with the disease. We help with gas, electricity, parking costs, the petrol to and from hospital and several other expenses.

P ROMOTING YOUR BUSINESS We value our advertisers. We appreciate the trust they place in us by promoting their businesses in our magazines. With our local partners, we currently publish a range of high quality quarterly titles across Wales. You can advertise your business from as little as £35 per season in this magazine. Pick-up-ability! Our magazines aren’t like other magazines. They have real pick-up appeal - in fact, they really do go like hot cakes. Quality comes first... along with the environment. We’re passionate about quality. The magazines are beautifully written and designed, and printed locally in South Wales on high quality paper (and no nasty varnishes or lamination we’re as green as green can be). Quality distribution to an affluent, aspirational audience... We distribute our magazines to over 1,000 carefully selected outlets across South Wales. We’d love to have your business on board. If you’d like to promote your business or service in our magazines, please get in touch, we’d love the opportunity to work with you.

OUR TITLES We proudly publish four Life-style magazines and one business to business title. Vale Life (our first magazine). This covers the beautiful Vale of Glamorgan - the most southerly county in Wales and deemed to be the most affluent. Vale Life was the first magazine we published. City Life The premier lifestyle magazine for Cardiff, Wales’ capital city. The magazine is delivered to all areas of Cardiff. Valleys Life At the heart of the South Wales Valleys. From the Neath Valley in the West to Blaenau Gwent and Pontypool in the East. West Life Covering Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and coastal Ceredigion, West Life is in touch with the relaxed lifestyle of this very special part of Wales. In Business Wales’ premier magazine for people in business. This is the kind of publication people in business want to read; interesting, inspirational and aspirational.
