The Tribute to the Enterprise Migrant Hostel in Springvale Victoria is the result of an ongoing community vision to publicly and permanently honour the significant contribution of the Enterprise Hostel. It is home to the first 200 Enterprise Roses, a symbol of hope, safety and beauty for more than 30,000 immigrants and refugees who entered Australia and lived at the hostel in the years 1970 to 1992. The rose garden and glass petal symbolise notions of security, protection, refuge and welcome. This garden is a place of continued dedication to an important part of Australia’s rich immigration experience. It was officially opened on 9 December 2012 by the Hon Nicholas Kotsiras, Minister for Multicultural Affairs and Citizenship. Photography Mark Wilson

Premier’s Design Awards 2013

Message from the Premier of Victoria Design is more than making products look good or services work well. Design is the creative spark that brings imagination to commercial reality. Businesses that understand design are able to make products and services that shape the future and contribute to our economic and social prosperity. Design is important to the Victorian economy. In Victoria, more than 195,000 people are employed in design related roles, with the sector generating revenue of $7.3 billion annually for the state’s economy, including an estimated $204 million in design-related exports. The Premier’s Design Awards play an important role in highlighting and celebrating excellence in the development and use of design by designers and businesses. Last year, we launched a renewed awards program that set a solid foundation for growth. This year sees the inclusion of six award categories to recognise the diverse use of design across the community and economy. The standard and number of applications has been particularly high this year, and our award winner has been singled out for recognition by a panel of international and interstate judges. The award winner may use the trademark of the Premier’s Design Awards in connection with their business as an indication of leadership, expert recognition and prestige. I’d like to extend my thanks to Ken Cato AO and the judging panel. Attracting such a high calibre international and national judging panel further enhances the prestige of the awards. I ask all Victorians to join with me in congratulating the winner and applicants on their contribution towards a more innovative and productive Victoria.

The Hon Dr Denis Napthine MP Premier

Premier’s Design Awards

Judging Criteria

Good design means taking five minutes to exit a crowded sports stadium instead of fifteen. It’s an industrial strength ladder that is still easy to manoeuvre. It’s the elimination of double-handling data entered online. Design can re-invigorate your business and give you a critical competitive edge.

Design Excellence

Good design can also be the difference between treading water and prospering in an increasingly competitive global economy. Design accounts for an estimated $204 million in exports and $7.3 billion annually to Victoria’s economy. Highlighting the economic, environmental and social benefits of investing in good design, the prestigious Premier’s Design Awards celebrate and reward both designers and firms for excellence in the development and use of design. Building on last year’s awards, the 2013 awards program recognises and celebrates diversity in design with the inclusion of six award categories. The award categories are: Architectural Design, Service Design, Product Design, Communication Design, Digital Design and Design Strategy. For the second year, Victorian design icon, Ken Cato AO, chaired the judging panel made up of prominent Australian and international experts – reflecting the breadth and depth of the design industry and design application. The judging panel brings together a wealth of diverse design perspectives to judge the applications, as well as strengthening the national and international profile of the awards. The Victorian Government is committed to driving best practice design in Victoria, growing awareness of design, building business capability and fostering excellence in design skills, through the delivery of the $10 million Victorian Design Initiatives 2012-15. The Victorian Design Initiatives 2012-15 reflect design’s role as an enabler of innovation and its central importance to improving the capabilities and global competitiveness of Victorian firms. The Premier’s Design Awards is a key component of the initiatives, bringing recognition to the best of Victoria’s design professionals and the companies that understand its commercial impact.

• Effective use of professional design to solve a legitimate problem or need, or to create an opportunity • Degree of functional and aesthetic appeal to a broad range of users

Design Transformation • Degree of design-led transformation i.e. how has the investment in professional design transformed the client’s business • Extent to which design is now integrated in the client’s processes and activities

Design Impact • Impact of the product on the client’s business performance i.e. market share, financial sustainability, environmental and social outcomes • Impact on industry and end-user adoption of the design

Design Innovation • Original design concepts and insights or ways of design thinking that enhance the user’s experience • Degree of cross-disciplinary design and its impact on enabling innovation, productivity and sets new standards or benchmarks

Premier’s Design Awards 2013

A Message from Good Design Australia Good Design Australia is proud to have organised this year’s Premier’s Design Awards in conjunction with the Victorian Government. With the introduction of six new categories, a streamlined application and assessment process and re-structured design evaluation criteria, the 2013 Premier’s Design Awards attracted a record number of high quality entries - reaffirming the strength of Victoria’s design sector. The platform created by the Premier’s Design Awards allows Victoria’s design professionals to showcase their work both nationally and internationally across a broad range of design sectors. More specifically, it highlights the Victorian Government’s commitment to building a unique culture of design-led innovation in the state of Victoria. I am delighted to present the 2013 Premier’s Design Awards Yearbook featuring the best of Victorian design and innovation over the year. On behalf of Good Design Australia, I extend my sincere appreciation to the Victorian designers who supported the awards this year.

Nike+Nine Designed by: Local Peoples Commissioned by: Nike The London Olympic Games was a global sporting focus in 2012 but, due to I.O.C. Rule 40 (Olympic Media Blackout), Nike was restricted from talking about the innovative products, technology and support they were providing to athletes from all over the world during the games. As a brand with a lot to say, Nike required a unique design solution. Local Peoples designed and delivered Nike+Nine, a store that ran on London time (open at night,

closed during the day) and featured a pinnacle retail fit-out, seamlessly combining physical and digital innovation with cutting edge interactive technology. Average sales at the pop-up store were up 52 per cent on the national average. These positive retail results directly reflected the success of Local Peoples’ innovative design strategy.

Box Hill Gardens Multi Use Purpose Area

Crumpler Prahran

FabPod

Designed by: ASPECT Studios & NMBW Architecture Studio Commissioned by: Whitehorse City Council

Designed by: Russell & George Commissioned by: Crumpler

Designed by: Spatial Information Architecture Laboratory (SIAL), RMIT University Commissioned by: RMIT University, Property Services

Box Hill Gardens is a mature park within the rapidly transforming urban centre of Box Hill. The master plan of 2011 proposed a shift in the usability of the park with new recreation elements and the rejuvenation of existing park spaces. This was in response to the increased density and population using the park as well as accommodating new recreational activities reflecting Box Hill’s contemporary cultural mix.

The customer is king, long live the customer! The design of the Crumpler Prahran store meshes the real and the surreal, the 2D & the 3D, the offline and the online creating a dynamic customer experience where ideas of technology, travel and exploration seamlessly interact. A light cage where virtual space and physical space meet. The space is designed around an abstraction of a light pixel like that seen on a computer screen. A large scale light cage is suspended within the space creating an urban artwork while simultaneously lighting and framing the product.

The team created an innovative multi-purpose space with a diverse array of recreation activities and events. The former tennis club building and courts where reinterpreted and recycled into a contemporary and highly tactile design.

FabPod is a small project addressing the challenge of designing and prototyping a meeting room enclosure to sit within any open-plan work environment, in this case the new Design Hub at RMIT. The project utilises leading research in acoustic design, digital manufacturing and craft techniques. It evolved around a hypothesis that hyperbolic surfaces hold excellent properties for scattering sound and enhancing acoustic response in challenging circumstances. This addresses the diffusion of sound, avoiding resonances and ‘hot spots’ while not making the space too acoustically ‘dead’. The architecture is considered as a full-scale prototype, realised through a customisable set of components.

Fairhaven Beach House

Footscray Nicholson Learning Commons

Headquarters for Birkenstock Australia

Designed by: John Wardle Architects Commissioned by: Arnold Thomas Becker

Designed by: Cox Architecture Commissioned by: Victoria University

Designed by: Melbourne Design Studios (Architecture) Commissioned by: Birkenstock Australia

The spatial journey through the house from arrival to view is choreographed to increase anticipation before reaching the main living space. As you step beneath a cantilevered study into a dramatic vertical entry space, you become acutely aware of a number of twists and folds along its length that make the transformation into a horizontal living space.

Footscray Nicholson Learning Commons encompasses the refurbishment of a 1980’s public works building. The project connects the campus, through a significant civic gesture with the goal of creating a new campus heart. A double height lane has been cut through the existing structure, connecting public space on each side. Curving the path of the lane has provided more street frontage for student services and learning environments. The sides of the lane merge and then part to create areas of different intensity and purpose, calm and active. The laneway references the scale and texture of Melbourne’s vibrant and intimate city lanes.

This project is about inviting and inspiring people. It lets customers and visitors explore the spaces, and it allows them to experience the brand’s core values through the design. It sets a benchmark in sustainability, in healthy workplace design and in combining heritage with quality building and new ideas. A central ‘Australian’ courtyard makes the different departments of the company visible and allows public interaction and education, e.g. at weekend markets, live music, guided tours, etc. It re-defines the traditional concept of retailing, and looks at its future instead.

This beach house coils and steps around a protected central courtyard, which creates an outdoor space sheltered from the harsh prevailing winds. The living area doors and an oversized sliding kitchen window open up and integrate the courtyard with the house during fine weather.

Luna

Mildura Eco Living Centre

Roi Apartments

Designed by: Callum Fraser Commissioned by: Buxton Group

Designed by: EME Design Pty Ltd Commissioned by: Mildura Rural City Council

Designed by: Bird de la Coeur Architects Commissioned by: Rare City Acre

Luna, a new four storey residential project on Barkly Street, St Kilda, is based on Princess Leia’s infamous ‘dancing-girl’ gold bikini, featured in Star Wars, Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. While Luna’s curvaceous form echoes the draping lines of Leia’s usual white robes, the shimmering gold glass and metal mesh materials are matched perfectly with the colours and textures of the gold brassiere. The metallic skin seems almost intangible, hovering between reality and fantasy - a comment on the tension between the interior and exterior self. How much of ourselves do we reveal; what is introverted and what is extroverted?

This multipurpose community facility is a living, breathing eco exemplar with no indulgent superfluities; poetry and beauty are rooted in sustainable purpose. A playful educational space demonstrating creativity on a tight budget, this unique building represents a paradigm shift away from a conventional building covered in the bells and whistles of sustainability.

On a land-locked acre in Fitzroy, hidden behind Nicholson Street sits Roi Apartments. With a sense of surprise, the 172 apartments are discovered at the end of Bik Lane, sited around a generous north-facing courtyard. The provision of shared public space is a key element in the spatial configuration. In its neighbourhood of small timber workers cottages and remnant industrial buildings, its generous and light-filled foyer and courtyard provide an element of surprise.

The Mildura Eco Living Centre is an elegant timber building with a sweeping roof, forming the heart of the Eco Park. Showcasing sustainable building techniques and technologies to inspire the public. Striving for a new generation learning space, MELC is designed for flexibility, efficiency and comfort.

South Morang Rail Extension

The Australian Garden Completion

Designed by: Cox Architecture Commissioned by: Public Transport Victoria

Designed by: Taylor Cullity Lethlean with Paul Thompson Commissioned by: Royal Botanic Gardens

The South Morang Rail Extension project includes construction of three new rail stations, urban plazas and associated pedestrian, bus and vehicular access (at the expanding suburban townships of Thomastown, Epping and South Morang). Each station has been considered an expressive catalyst to establish a unique urban identity and create a benchmark of quality for subsequent infill and green field development. The stations have been designed as high quality public spaces that use the vitality of critical modes of public transport and interchange to enrich their communities, and to provide a platform for the social exchange critical to a civic identity.

“Australians are surrounded by ocean and ambushed from behind by desert - a war of mystery on two fronts.” Tim Winton In a former sand quarry, a new botanic garden has been completed, one that allows visitors to follow a metaphorical journey of water through the Australian landscape. This integrated landscape seeks, through the design of themed experiences, to inspire visitors to see our plants in new ways. This comes at a time when botanic gardens world-wide are questioning existing research and recreational paradigms, refocusing on messages of landscape conservation and renewed interest in meaningful visitor engagement.

DDP Studios Brand

DULUX World of Colour Exhibit - designEX 2013

Designed by: Aer Design Commissioned by: Deluxe Entertainment Services Group Australia

Designed by: UNO Australia Commissioned by: Dulux Australia

DDP Studios was formed through the union of four leading post-production houses. To launch this new entity, DDP Studios needed to express that the best talent and technology in Australia had finally come together and were looking to collaborate with creative partners on inspired ideas. Aer Design responded with a brand that paid homage to the union of four expert companies into one by encapsulating the merged culture and strength. The dedicated craftspeople, digital architects and technologists are committed to preparing, managing and enriching the highest quality in post-production TV and Film.

This exhibit was all about colour and movement, inspired by the Dulux Colour Forecast 2013. Using just under 2km of coloured stretched bungee cord, the playful perimeter shouted come and see me from afar. At the centre of the stand two large island counters served as the information and retail hub for the Dulux Colour Atlas and other collateral. Located behind the hub was a gallery for the Dulux Colour Awards and Intergrain Timber Vision Awards - a suspended wall creating a galley style space where visitors could view shortlisted submissions.

Gifts of Change Brand Review and Marketing Campaign Designed by: Thatworks Commissioned by: International Women’s Development Agency Inc. International Women’s Development Agency (IWDA) is the only Australian development organisation focused on women’s rights and gender equality. Gifts of Change (GoC) is a donation scheme where a ‘gift’ is purchased online for a loved one. The funds are allocated to one of many women’s development programs IWDA sponsors internationally. After four years, the GoC brand required a refresh and new marketing strategy. The objective was to increase awareness and donations leading up to the holiday season. Our strategy was the ‘triangle’ concept - creating connection between the donor, the recipient, and the women supported by the project through this gift.

The Identity Journal is a self-published, annual publication by leading Melbourne based creative agency TANK Branding. It explores the ideas, brands, people and insights that surround us every day, influencing our behaviour, our social circles, our businesses, organisations and at times, our ideals.

In May 2013, Australia hosted one of the most significant events on the philatelic calendar - The World Stamp Expo. It was the second largest international stamp show held worldwide. Australia Post, as principal sponsor, worked collaboratively with creative agency TANK Branding to create a communications campaign to reach well beyond the dedicated stamp collector. The campaign didn’t just work; it eclipsed all expectations and went towards raising Australia Post’s Net Promoters Score. The successful communications plan delivered a result that gave a sense of pride and value to Australia Post, the Australian Philatelic Federation, the stamp community, and Melbourne.

Crafted with a unique blend of Alpaca wool. Using 100% undyed fibre; as nature intended.

Above-ground Fire Shelters Designed by: Swinburne University of Technology Commissioned by: Frankston Concrete Products Pty Ltd To overcome the problem of installing safety bunkers underground in rocky terrain of the type found in Victorian bushfire prone area, a new type of above ground bushfire bunker was designed. It benefits from twin walled concrete structure to provide heat protection like in a thermos flask, though without vacuum A double door at the outside of the U-shaped gallery keeps the heat away from the main door entrance to the cabin. Fire testing shows the cabin temperature not to rise by more than a few degrees. The pre-fabricated bunker can be assembled at site within hours to ensure speedy and inexpensive installation.

Go Dutch!

Designed by: Content and Design direction by Assemble Commissioned by: Assemble

Designed by: Butterfly Commissioned by: Butterfly

Designed by: studioee Commissioned by: Syn-Ee Wong

Assemble is an architecture, design and property development company focused on small footprint projects. As a firm with limited resources, the firm wants to develop a culture around small footprint living across art, design, architecture, urbanism, the environment and financial affairs in an online publication, Assemble Papers (assemblepapers.com.au) was founded in July 2012. A publication that embodies our brand ideals, beliefs and sensibility has been effective in cultivating an audience and community of like-minded people and has led to 60 registrations of interest in our first residential development project (which has significantly de-risked the development model).

Butterfly designs great websites but their own needed an overhaul. It was time for a redesign that focused on showcasing what the firm can do that demonstrates the innovative, cutting edge and generally mad skills of our design and development teams. The best way to do this? A modern design in a responsive layout that looks equally fabulous on something as big as a TV or something as small as your mobile phone.

Go Dutch! is a personal mobile application that allows users to track your debtors and creditors. Users can upload photos of receipts or the dinner together, and tag friends that owe you some cash. Gentle reminders can be sent out to alert friends of certain cash owing. This application is intended to settle disputes that may arise from communication problems of debtors and creditors.

Telstra.com Consumer Site Redesign

The ACMA Website

Designed by: Faculty of Design, Swinburne University of Technology Commissioned by: Action Psychology

Designed by: Telstra Digital Commissioned by: Telstra Digital

Designed by: Aer Design Commissioned by: Australian Communication & Media Authority

Telstra.com has the largest online audience within the Australian telecommunications industry, attracting approximately 1.8 million unique visitors per week. Telstra.com aims to provide self-service capability throughout all stages of a customer’s journey. The challenge faced was feedback on poor find-ability, “I can’t find what I’m looking for, make it easier.” The response was ambitious; to create an Information Architecture and design to make it intuitive for customers to find what they need. Design was champion in bringing a cross functional team together. The team worked collaboratively, became innovators and delivered within the pressure of tight deadlines.

The Australian Communications & Media Authority is the government regulator of broadcasting, the Internet, radio communications and telecommunications. Aiming to drive better engagement with industry and public, a ‘discovery’ content model for an ‘engagement platform’ (aka website) was created. A digital destination where users can engage, share and access information through exploring topical content or search specific. The engagement platform uses a flexible grid system, which can segment to surface feature content and focused links or grow to encapsulate hero video content. The grid allows for reconfiguration of the ‘engagement platform’ on any device increasing accessibility anytime, anywhere.

Parents, Tweens & Sex is an engaging, safe and enjoyable resource for parents to use with their tweens (10-13 year olds). This unique app supports parents to educate their tweens with the sexual intelligence needed to be mindful, comfortable, respectful and responsive when they eventually have sexual relationships. The app helps parents to share their personal values and ethics while having conversations about sexual issues. A collaboration between expert and author, Sarah Calleja, with Swinburne University of Technology, the design of this groundbreaking app sensitively balances educational content with engaging functionality to create unique teaching experiences on a complex topic.

b.box Essential Baby Bottle

Backpack Bed™ Tropical

Designed by: b.box for kids Commissioned by: BBox for Kids Development Pty Ltd

Designed by: Swags for Homeless Commissioned by: Swags for Homeless

This unique concept gives parents the freedom and convenience to feed baby anywhere, anytime without the mess, the fuss, and the contamination risk. For optimum nutrition, makers of infant formula recommend that powder and fresh water be mixed at the time of feeding. The b.box Essential Baby Bottle design allows the parent to pre-assemble the sterilised parts with a measured amount of powdered formula and clean water, keeping them separated and sealed. At feeding time, the plunger is manually pushed upwards to combine the powder and the water in the bottle, creating freshly mixed liquid formula ready for instant feeding.

With portability - how to save the lives of homeless and disaster victims without shelter? The Backpack Bed is provided to homeless people without shelter and to disaster victims. Now also revolutionising the lightweight camping world. It looks like a backpack but rolls out into a waterproof, warm and dry portable bed and also converts into a sun/wind shelter. It is an ultralight 2.9kg with ergonomic backpack straps, a 190cm comfort mattress with silver insulation backing, three-zipped mosquito mesh windows, hidden lockable pocket and lock. It has multiple storage zones, is fire retardant and can carry 20+kgs.

Blackmagic Cinema Camera

Blinder 1 Light

Blue Monkey - Wall Plate Levelling Tool

Designed by: Blackmagic Industrial Design Team Commissioned by: Blackmagic Design

Designed by: Knog Pty Ltd Commissioned by: Knog Pty Ltd

Designed by: CobaltNiche Commissioned by: Spears Pacific

The Blackmagic Cinema Camera is a cinema quality digital video camera designed for production of feature films, documentaries and episodic television. Costing less than $3,000, it provides Hollywood quality filmmaking capabilities at a fraction of the cost of existing cinema cameras, which cost upward of $15,000. A truly democratising product, it has had significant cultural implications on the global video industry, putting high-end filmmaking within the reach of the mass-market. Designed entirely in Australia, the revolutionary compact design introduces a completely new form factor to the cinema camera industry, overcoming significant engineering challenges including colour science, optics and thermal management.

The Blinder 1 is a bicycle safety light that shines bright at 20 Lumens (front) and 11 lumens (rear). 100 per cent waterproof and light as a feather at 15 grams. Burning for 2 hours on constant and 11 hours on eco flash, this little light will get you noticed. Fully recharge in just 2.5 hours using the integrated USB plug and be on your way.

A tedious task facing electricians during project fit-out is the creation of numerous holes in wall linings for connection of power outlets and light switches. The opening must be rectangular, accurately positioned and not vary too far from optimum dimensions. Marking out can be taxing and time consuming and often suffers from being delegated to an apprentice. The Blue Monkey wall plate jig has a positive impact on the performance of this task saving time (which, on site, means money). It speeds up mark out operations, improves accuracy and reduces rework on a task that may be repeated hundreds of times on a project.

The Concave Quantum1 football boot has revolutionised the sports industry since its debut in October 2012. The revolutionary feature of the boot is its patented Concave Element, which is situated on the instep of the boot, or the ‘sweet spot’ - the point of optimum power and accuracy. The Concave Element naturally complements the convex shape of a football, creating a ‘cup’ for any football. This design feature allows players to execute kicks with more accuracy, control and power on a far more consistent basis than with a standard football boot.

architectural design

Design Innovation and Technology Advances in the digital age have already transformed design practice but we are only at the cusp of a greater revolution.

The integrated application of technology and prototyping from design through to construction is now becoming a reality. RMIT’s renowned Spatial Information Architecture Laboratory (SIAL) has been working at the forefront of digital design practice for over a decade. Researchers are engaged in a wide variety of projects that collaboratively disturb artificial distinctions between the physical and virtual, digital and analogue, scientific and artistic, instrumental and philosophical. This interdisciplinary research has ranged from highly speculative exploration of high end computing, to a continued role in the design and realisation of the Temple Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. A recent SIAL project that has engaged acoustic simulation, architecture and digital fabrication is the Fabpod – which is a finalist for a Premier’s Design Award. FabPod is a small project that addresses the challenge of designing and prototyping a meeting room enclosure to sit within open-plan work environments. In this case it was to be located at the new Design Hub at RMIT. It is conceived as both a prototype to drive future research and a semi-permanent piece of architecture serving as a day-to-day meeting space. The research lineage of the project stems from a hypothesis that hyperbolic geometries, such as those used in the interior of the Sagrada Familia, are excellent in producing acoustically diffuse spaces. There is both anecdotal evidence from musicians as well as written evidence from Antoni Gaudi that this might be the case. Research in acoustic diffusion is an emerging field and there is much to explore in how this could inform design. At the core of the Fabpod project is the conception and development of a generic “design system”. This involved the creation of a modular kit of parts which provided a workflow to rapidly propose, test and evaluate design iterations. Extending from early schematic stages through to the complete fabrication, this allowed testing a feedback from acoustics and fabrication tests to drive the design. The first full-scale prototype was realised over a six-month period. Through this process, researchers at RMIT worked with industry partners and local fabricators to produce the thousands of customised parts required to prefabricate a series of 180 unique building components. Expertise in both material craft and computer numeric controlled (CNC) fabrication were deeply embedded in the design and development process. This was essential to enable the production of such customised components within the tight tolerances required for assembly.

This research, which explores the links between highly customised surface, form and material design, information systems, digital fabrication and fine tuning phenomenological performance, in this case the acoustic qualities of space, exemplifies all four key areas that SIAL is addressing in post professional education. To address the next digital revolution, RMIT has launched a new Master of Design Innovation and Technology that speculates on the future of design practice and the application of technology to this constantly changing environment. As innovation in spatial and architectural design practice is positioned at the intersection of several disciplines, this program would appeal to students from a wide variety of professions such as architecture and design, industrial design, computer science, engineering, media and sound design. Design studios are based around the following themes: • Designing Information Environments • Designing Responsive and Adaptive Environments • Spatial Sound Design and Urban Soundscape • Digital Fabrication Construction and Advanced Manufacturing For more information: Website: www.rmit.edu.au/desinnovtech

Design for Meaning: The Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Service Wall smAQ Design Collaborations (Sinatra Murphy & AQL Landscape Design) provide a comprehensive suite of services that sit well with community design projects. These include project visioning and development, community engagement and co-design, varied design methodologies, and realising projects through construction and project management. The design and delivery of the Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Service Wall in Seymour Victoria is the most recent of a series of smAQ collaborations that span 15 years. The project was initiated by Mitchell Shire Council and the Mitchell Sub Branch of Vietnam Veterans as a design/construct tender for either a black granite or steel wall as a tribute to approximately 61,000 Australians who served in the war. The wall was part of the Commemorative Walk’s Stage 2, programmed to coincide with the 50 year anniversary of the Vietnam War. After being shortlisted smAQ transformed the project vision from a static list of names most likely engraved in black granite, to a meaningful visual account of the Australian story, produced as digi- graphics laminated in toughened glass panels, designed to attract a wide audience. smAQ developed a participatory design process to establish the parameters of the wall’s visual content including, size, imagery and composition, colour and texture and sequence. A series of workshops were carried out with the Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Wall Committee to conceptualise the graphic artwork and ensure that the ownership of the emerging story was retained by the Veterans. This identified the aspiration to provide a chronological account of Australia’s involvement in the war, establishing strict boundaries regarding the use, placement and editing of imagery. The Committee reviewed approximately 4,500 pictures taken by Australian and New Zealand servicemen to select 80 for a storyboard, which became the visual brief for the artwork. The main themes depicted in the selection are mobilisation; the entry and expanding roles of the Navy and Air Force; the battles of Long Tan, Coral/Balmoral and Binh Ba; the TET Offensive; National Servicemen; life at the base of Nui Dat; the tracker dogs; dust-off and the medicos; R&R; and going home. The wall was conceived and developed as a modular system to be erected on site to meet project timelines and program efficient installation within the separate landscape scope. Each module comprises a precast concrete plinth to accommodate each 1500mm wide, 1900mm high and 25mm thick glass panel and approximately 200 poppies. After receipt of 60,278 names (including 11 tracker dogs) from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the required number of panels was confirmed setting the length of the wall. Four plinth types were designed to create the serpentine alignment, and the original landscape design was adjusted in response. The 85 metre wall is composed of 108 glass art panels accommodating 323m2 of artwork that presents Australia’s involvement from 1962 to 1973, and an individual remembrance panel for the 521 Australians who lost their lives in the conflict.

The Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Service Wall is now the primary feature in the Commemorative Walk landscape. Its impact has far exceeded expectation with well over 12,000 people visiting since it was officially opened on 9 March 2013. The wall has established Seymour as a destination, and a consistent stream of weekly visitors are providing economic benefit to local cafes and food outlets. The original ambition to create a nationally important place of recognition has been achieved and the opportunity for education is marked by the constant procession of visiting school buses and a wall panel numbering system that forecasts the potential of a future interactive information platform or QR code. The wall has a lasting impact on all who visit it. By day, the wall is a meandering series of glass panels set within a native landscape reminiscent of the rice paddies and rubber tree plantations of Vietnam. By night, the experienced is transformed by energy efficient LED lighting. Veterans, their friends, family and tourists all remark on the sense of pride, healing and emotional release that a visit to the wall leaves them with. The Vietnam Veterans Commemorative wall is a true asset to Seymour and a credit to all of those who worked on it. Cr.
