Everyone has his or her own ideas about what constitutes the official kick-off to the holiday season, but for many residents of Rockville the question was settled over a decade ago. For them, the true first true signal that Christmas is around the corner comes with the flick of a switch, the one that powers on the light display at 2375 Rockville Road. The fact that the display — lovingly and painstakingly arranged each year by David and Bobbie DeHart – has become something of an iconic holiday staple is largely thanks to the couple’s determination in the face of any obstacle to derail their mission. Over the years, despite health challenges and the occasional battle with bad weather — more than once they have lost a large inflatable yard decoration to violent wind gusts — the couple see Lights > 3

Purple Heart continued from >1 sented on behalf of the President of the United States to those wounded or killed in combat while serving in the United States military. The resolution read during the board’s meeting on Nov. 7 recognized the service of the men and women who earned the medal, calling it “vital in maintaining the freedoms and way of life enjoyed by our citizens.” To Goochland resident Richard Hausler, a Vietnam veteran and Purple Heart recipient, the past decades have been spent wrestling with the aftereffects of his wartime service. Hausler joined the Marines in 1965 with the intent of fighting in Vietnam, and was just 19 when he was a shot

in the leg while serving in combat. It was an injury severe enough that he was forced into retirement from the Marine Corps immediately afterward. Though he would go on to have a successful private sector career in the tire business, Hausler struggled with the fact that few people he knew could relate to the things he had experienced. He got on as best he could, he says, but struggled with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. His memories of the war still haunted him, and he didn’t care to call attention to himself or ask for any praise for what he had sacrificed. Eventually however, just a few years ago, he found his way to a meeting of the Richmond chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, an

organization made up only of those who have been awarded to honor. Though there are less than a few dozen current members, the group is active in numerous veteran-focused efforts, including volunteering at the The Sitter & Barfoot Veterans Care Center at the McGuire VA Medical Center. It was on behalf of the group that Hausler first approached District 4 Supervisor Robert Minnick, himself a retired United States Army Lieutenant Colonel, and asked about the possibility of Goochland becoming a Purple Heart County. As luck would have it, Minnick didn’t need much convincing: he had actually proposed the idea of having Goochland receive the designation several years before, after his wife

Cathy sent him a photo of a parking space designated for Purple Heart recipients near Fort Bragg in North Carolina. The plan, while warmly received, had been seemingly lost at the time amid a shuffle of pressing deadlines and projects. After speaking to Hausler, however, Minnick said he knew they needed to find a way to make it happen. To Hausler, the designation represents a measure of appreciation many of his fellow Vietnam veterans never received, but also serves to recognize a special subset of those who have served. “There’s only so many that have earned the Purple Heart,” Hausler said. “And that’s a good thing.” To Purple Heart recipient Harrison

Hankins, who currently serves as a Corporal with the Goochland Sheriff’s Department, the new designation brings a measure of pride. But he also thinks it could lead to something even more important. Hankins, who was wounded by a mortar round while serving as a Marine in Afghanistan in 2010, said he hopes that “beyond the honor and thanks that the county is providing to these veterans, this will also help people to begin a dialogue with our veteran community and hear their stories. All veterans have stories to tell, and the more that we can get these stories out in the local community the more that we can help create awareness of not only the physical injuries but the mental injuries that plague those returning from combat.”

welcomes Dr. Michael Marotta to its Goochland office. Dr. Marotta brings a wealth of experience after completing a two-year residency at the University of Virginia Hospital.

Lights continued from >1 has made it a priority to festoon their yard with dozens and dozens of holiday decorations, including inflatable Santa, bears and penguins. There are thousands of lights, inflatables galore, and enough cords and wires that years ago they began politely

but firmly insisting that visitors please remain in their cars. Aside from that, anyone wishing to take in the display is warmly welcome to use their circular driveway any time from 5:10 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. every night. The scene is also lit from 5:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. for school children to enjoy on their bus rides. If the porch light is on,

David said, a visit from Santa will probably be part of the fun as well. Like anyone who attempts even a modest holiday exhibition, the couple admits that it isn’t something that can be done on a whim. Keeping everything running requires a certain level of stamina and commitment, both physically and financially. Still, they say, the joy they

are able to bring to others every year makes it all very much worth it. “People honk, they come by and say ‘Thank you’ — it really keeps me going,” said David, who typically starts organizing and arranging the decorations right after Thanksgiving. “When people come by and say they appreciate it, it makes it that much easier to do,” he added.

Giving thanks for small things oft-overlooked By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Even though Thanksgiving is now behind us, I thought it might be nice this year to keep that feeling of thankfulness alive throughout the remainder of the holiday season. It absolutely goes without saying that all of our first responders — plenty of whom will be working on Christmas Eve and/or Christmas Day — deserve our sincere appreciation for all they do, especially when it pulls them away from their own families during the holidays. But I thought I might take a moment to offer a word or two of thanks to those who often don’t get to hear it, even though this time of year can be challenging for them as well. First up, I would like to thank those who put up the OK holiday decoration displays every year. Mind you, these are definitely not the ones that are going to make the news, but rather the ones that get the annual Participation Trophy, the award handed out for doing your level best even

though you’re kind of terrible. I’m thinking here specifically of a home in my old neighborhood that installed a gigantic blow-up Santa on the chimney every year for 15 years, along with a few limp strands of lights slung half-heartedly over the porch railing. Every single year the Santa blew off the roof long before Christmas, sometimes dangling by one slowly-deflating boot. One year he fell off and stayed facedown in the yard until March. It was great. Thank you also, of course, to those who work in retail during the holidays. Like the poor soul who has to follow behind the horses in the Christmas Parade, anyone who makes their living in any kind of store is going to be dealing with their fair share of unpleasantness. It’s not that people are meaner this time of year, but the holiday hustle and bustle has a way of stretching shoppers’ patience tinsel-thin, and those who staff the sales counters often seem to take the brunt of it. Years ago, I worked in a place that sold holiday hams. Please believe me when see Thanks > 15

I’m not sure how kids today view music, or the pursuit thereof. Sure, many of them can’t take a step without headphones or a catchy tune playing on their personal devices, but the actual creation of music doesn’t seem as important as a keen ear. I suppose it’s a sign of the times that a block of music stores in downtown Richmond no longer exists, and a culture of small distinct shops are only a memory. But, to a small group of Richmonders, the thought of the intersection of First Street and Broad Streets can mean only one thing — the centerpiece of making music in RVA. Today, devotees visit huge big box music stores with thousands of instruments, all of them available in seconds if your credit is good enough. In the 1960s, if you played music in Richmond, First Street was a regular stop on your schedule. My first visit to Southern Music in 1963 was an introduction to a world of music and an association that would last for decades. My grandmother took me downtown to purchase my first set of drums, a three-piece set of blue pearl Ludwigs. I was convinced that playing them would be as easy as it looked, but quickly learned that playing music is a serious pursuit and there was no substitute for hard work and dedication. As a teen, I took the bus to the block many times, and, on some days, just strode from music store to store, marveling at the selection or latest innovations. Entering one of those shops seemed almost magical, complete with a unique smell of old instrument cases or brass horns. The see Music > page 11

Bulldogs stand firm at East Rock By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer

ELKTON – “We want Bama,” one Bulldog exclaimed as the team celebrated a Virginia High School League Class 2 state semi-final 35-21 win over East Rockingham. As the fog crept lower from the surrounding mountains, Goochland headed home with one more game remaining on a mission that began in the late days of August. Three hours earlier, the outcome had seemed less than certain as Eagle running back J’Wan Evans raced 58 yards on the second play from scrimmage, placing the visitors in an unfamiliar position —trailing. “Except for that opening series, we bottled that kid up,” Bulldog coach Alex Fruth said. “Our kids did a great job doing what they were supposed to do and stopping him.” That opening salvo was tempered when the Bulldogs thwarted the extra point attempt, holding the deficit to 6. “The extra point miss was BIG,” Fruth said. “We saw that he was slow with the process of getting the kick off and felt we could rush him.” When the Eagles jumped on the offensive line, it gave the Bulldogs a second chance to thwart the try. “The penalty on the first attempt gave us a chance to get on the kids and come after the kick with a better effort, which we did. After that, it became a game of math, with us having the advantage. Between that and the big first run by East Rock, it gave us a wake-up call and got us into the flow of the game,” Fruth said. “We handled it. We came out after that and got some stops and got some sacks on their quar-

terback.” That inspired defense then forced a short punt that led to the Bulldogs first score, an 11-yard run by Devin McCray. C.J. Towles picked off the Eagles on their ensuing possession and McCray again cashed in from a yard out to give the Bulldogs a 14-6 lead. Throughout the game, Towles took most of the snaps at quarterback, and McCray moved to wing back. “It made sense,” Fruth said. “When you need a wing, you

go to your best athlete, so that’s what we did.” Fruth further explained that move. “It was more about injuries, and we had to replace a kid,” he said. The move didn’t seem to affect either player. “I just did what the team needed me to,” McCray said. “Our line executed so well and I’m really proud of them.” And Towles had a cool as a cucumber performance under center.

“The coach told us in practice everything we needed to do to win and we just came out there and did our thing,” he said. “At the beginning of the game I was nervous, but everyone trusted me so I knew I could trust myself and just went out and did my thing.” East Rockingham’s passing attack was relentless and routinely challenged a Goochland secondary that found stops when it most needed it. Shortly before halftime, Eagles running back Matt

Brown hit wide receiver Isaac Kisling for a 62-yard score, but the two-point attempt failed and the Bulldogs led the host Eagles 14-12 at the half. Connor Popielarz led all rushers with 172 yards, most of them coming on breakout runs from scrimmage. The sophomore scored twice for the Bulldogs. And McCray finished with a trio of scores, the final coming shortly after the half on a 36-yard run that gave Goochland breathing room at

21-12. Popielarz scored from 4 yards out to make it 28-12, but the high-powered East Rockingham offense responded quickly with a 27-yard touchdown pass from Dylan Williams to Evans and a fourth quarter field goal. With the score at 28-21, Goochland mounted its final drive with a little under five minutes to go in the game. see East Rock > 8

A smothering defensive effort laid the groundwork for a winning start to Goochland High School’s girls basketball season as the Bulldogs doubled up on visiting Douglas Freeman 34-17 on Nov. 28. As a bonus the win was over a Class 5 opponent. Goochland got off to a slow start offensively, scoring only nine points in the opening period. The Bulldogs took some time to decipher the Rebels’ defense in the first half. “They played man-toman the whole game. A lot of teams don’t do that against us,” Goochland coach James Harris said. “We managed to figure it out. It was a good experience for our team.” The Bulldogs’ offensive struggles continued into the second quarter, but their strong defensive effort continued throughout the half. Goochland held a 14-8 lead at halftime.

East Rock continued from >7 When Popielarz slid off a pile of Eagle defenders, somehow he maintained his footing and sprinted 74 yards down the sideline, the outcome was certain. “Every play starts with a great offensive push from the offensive line,” Popielarz said.

The Bulldogs managed to turn up their level of play in the second half, fueled mainly by their defense. “Our defense was the key, especially in the second half,” Harris said. “It took us a while to find our groove, but eventually we got it going.” The Rebels looked to run their offense through the high post, which the Bulldogs keyed in on after intermission. “We managed to shut down their post game completely,” Harris said. “We forced the ball to the outside, and they had to use more clock during their offensive possessions.” Goochland would hold Freeman to only nine points in the third and fourth quarters. The Bulldogs’ offense also found its stride in the second half, scoring 18 points during the third and fourth quarters. “It started with rebounding and taking care of the ball. Then we had more movement, more screening off the ball,” Harris said.“That was able to buy us one or two more seconds, and that made a big dif-

ference.” Harris was also pleased with Goochland’s performance in its first matchup with a Class 5 opponent. “It was a good experience,” he said. “It’s still basketball. We played well. I’m satisfied and we’re moving in the right direction.” The Bulldogs were led by two of their seniors. Guard

Blake Thomas recorded 10 points, three rebounds, and six steals. Forward Justice Tibbs recorded eight points, four rebounds, four assists, and five steals. Goochland will be back in action Friday at 7 p.m. when the Bulldogs travel to Nottoway. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

“I was driving my feet forward trying to break out and the offensive line got the push.” Fruth said experience helped, but credited his team with staying after it and following the plan. It worked. “That was a lot of fun,” Fruth said. “We kept going after people from start to finish. “Offensively, we ran power well and ran things better up front than we’ve ever done.”

While the Bulldogs won’t get top-rated Alabama next week, they will face another strong contender in the form of Graham High School of Bluefield, the winner of the other state semifinal which knocked off Radford 57-13. Game time is 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Salem City Stadium in Salem. Fruth knows with each week the challenge becomes

more daunting and facing the G-Men won’t be easy. “Their QB is good! He is the best QB we have seen all year,” Fruth said. “He moves really well, is fast, and just makes play after play. We will be tested in the back half of our defense due to his skill and their size and speed at wide receiver. It’s going to be a heck of a challenge for our defense.”

The 2018-19 season looks to be something of a reset for Benedictine’s boys basketball team. With four starters from last year’s team having departed, the Cadets will take the court with an entirely new starting five this season. The transition to a new starting unit will also take place under a new coach, as first-year man Mark Royster takes the helm at Benedictine. Fortunately, there is a level of familiarity for the Cadets amongst the players. Though the starting five will be entirely new, it will be comprised of returning upperclassmen. Seniors Ryan Boone and Noah Lindsay, along with juniors Lorenz Boykin and Malcolm Bridges, will step into leadership roles for Benedictine this season. “They have no choice. We are inexperienced when it comes to court-time leadership. We play 36 games, so they will all have ample opportunity,” Royster said. “Either you take hold of that role or you don’t but it can’t be forced by the coaching staff.” The Cadets’ returning group has already had the chance to step into leadership roles, as Royster credits them for doing much of the legwork in getting so many new faces on the same page. “Fortunately these young men have done this on their own since we took over. Malcolm, Noah, and Ryan – our captains – took it upon themselves to make sure the players bonded early,” he said. “It did help that we knew the guys who were returning.”

All the changes coming to Benedictine this year will also influence the team’s style of play. Rather than having a defined style, the team’s strategy on offense and defense will depend upon the opponent the Cadets are facing. “We will be as up-tempo as our opponent dictates,” Royster said “Against some teams you have to use different strategies, but for the most part we plan on bringing it to whichever team we play on both ends of the floor. As a staff, we are not a fan of slow play.” The 36-game schedule that Benedictine will play this season will certainly give the team an increased amount of time on the court to work out the kinks, as well as a variety of opponents to test themselves against. The schedule will feature participation in the Rebel Invitational to open the season, the Sleepy Thompson Tournament beginning on Dec. 6, and the hometown Benedictine Capital City Classic taking place Dec. 27-29. The team will not well and truly enter VISAA Division 1 play until the New Year. While the Cadets will be inexperienced and will look to grow throughout the season, Royster still expressed optimism for what lies ahead. “Our expectation for this team is to play hard, play together, and have fun. Our inexperience will hurt us in certain games but most teams deal with inexperience,” he said. “As far as our record goes, we feel there is no team on our 36 game schedule we can’t beat. You have to love it to be here!”

music stores downtown opened a window that somehow never closes completely. There’s still a magic about any music store, even the big ones that seem overwhelming to those used to something smaller and more intimate. For me and hundreds of other local musicians, that lifelong love affair began with a bus ride to First and Broad Streets and a visit to one of those small shops that once lined the block. The stores might be long gone, or at least relocated, but the joy of music planted in that small block, lasts a lifetime.
