The site of the annual Field Day (CHECK) of the Past was eerily quiet last Friday afternoon, as the lateAugust sun beat down on the roofs of the historic buildings and weathered equipment sheds scattered across the vast property off Ashland Rd. But while the open fields and grandstands where the tractor and truck pulls take place were empty, and the whirring carnival rides of last year only a memory, there was one small building that was already abuzz with activity. There, surrounded by stacks of files, paperwork and dozens of tasks-to-be-completed, executive director Melinda Gammon and volunteer Kathy Williams were hard at work on the preparations for this year’s Field Day event. Planning for the show, which offers attendees a chance to explore and celebrate the history of the area through dozens of demonstrations and exhibits, has
