When Goochland County residents learned that the celebrated National Defense Cadet Corps (NDCC) program at Goochland High School was in danger of being cut from the curriculum due to a loss of funding, it didn’t take long for the concerned phone calls to begin streaming into the offices of local county and school officials Though it was often referred to as a Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (MCJROTC) program, Goochland’s program was actually an NDCC program funded through the

continued from >1 MCJROTC. When a recent decision came down that said funds from the MCJROTC program could not be spent on NDCC programs, Goochland’s program was effectively cut off. Goochland’s MCJROTC was founded in 2014, and was one of 35 programs across the country impacted by the funding cuts. The program has received an overwhelmingly positive response from the community since it was first brought to GHS, and was lauded by local supervisors and school board members. Many county officials said they would support keeping the program regardless of the

Roads continued from >1 what county planning officials describe as the transportation component of Goochland’s Comprehensive Plan. And as all in attendance were quickly reminded, roadways are a hot topic in the county these days. Last updated in 2005, the county’s MTP lays out a framework for future transportation infrastructure and provides guidelines on road locations, right-of-way widths, and sidewalks. While the plan does offer conceptual guidelines, it doesn’t guarantee that any project outlined in it will be constructed, or even funded. But despite assurances that the current plan is still very much a work in progress--and that no final decisions would be made without opportunity for citizen feedback--those in attendance were quick to register their dismay with certain aspects of what was being presented. Chief among the concerns

cuts, and vowed to find a way to do it. Eventually, word about the possible loss of Goochland’s program reached the office of Rep. Dave Brat, (R-Va), who instructed his staff to work closely with Goochland High School and the Marine Corps on a plan to convert from an NDCC program to a full MCJROTC program. Finally, late last month, the school division got the news it had been hoping to hear: the program had been saved. “I am glad my office helped facilitate this transfer so that Virginians who want to serve in the military have top-tier training,” Brat said, calling the many calls his office received “an example of the self-initiative Goochland puts on display

“I am glad my office helped facilitate this transfer so that Virginians who want to serve in the military have top-tier training.”

regularly.” Goochland County school board chairman John Lumpkins said he and his fellow board members are

“delighted” that the MCJROTC program will continue, and also praised the community for coming together to help make it happen. “That advocacy was so important,” said Lumpkins, noting the Board of Supervisors had also been a key ally throughout the process. Brat, for his part, said keeping the MCJROTC program in Goochland was about making sure those enrolled know the community is behind them. “High school students honor us with their desire to serve,” Brat said. “Our communities have the responsibility to honor them in return with the preparation they need to defend the American homeland.

raised were those that focused on safety, with some questioning how the proposed MTP revision would address certain areas of the county that already see higher rates of vehicle crashes. Also at issue: If the county is truly committed to keeping the county predominantly rural in nature, some asked, why create an infrastructure that many predict will draw more development and further erode the peace and quiet they sought when they moved to Goochland? The possibility of making Broad Street four lanes at some point in the future was met with a particularly exasperated response, despite the insistence from several of those leading the meeting that this would likely not happen for many years, if it happened at all. Stepping in to offer his comments, county administrator John Budesky urged those in attendance to remember that the people working on the MTP update were simply creating a plan from the many different data sets they had

gathered, one that residents will eventually be given the opportunity to help shape and revise. Essentially, Budesky said, “what they are doing is math.” The community members and their elected representatives, he explained, will ultimately have the final say. While the date and time of the next community meeting has yet to be determined, the representative s from Kimley Horn said their next step is to

pull together all the feedback they received from residents and continue to work toward a completed MTP. The Board of Supervisors will hold a work session on the MTP on June 5 at 1 p.m., and the Planning Commission is set to hold a public hearing on the plan on July 5. With the Planning Commission’s recommendation in hand, the supervisors are expected to vote on the revised plan on Aug. 7.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

Spring decluttering for the last time ... again By Roslyn Ryan Editor

As hard as I try to convince myself that I am a well-organized, disciplined, got-it-all together kind of person, there always seems to be a little voice in my head reminding me that, in reality, this just isn’t so. If ever, for example, I should pat myself on the back for having a clutter-free kitchen table, the little voice gently brings up the pantry, where a basic search will turn up all manner of odds and long-since forgotten ends, most of it stored haphazardly in no particular order whatsoever. Somewhere in there may be a canned good or two that predates the Obama admin-

istration, and it’s likely entombed behind three half-used bags of flour and a bin of mixer attachments that may or may not belong to the mixer I currently own. I would like to point out, when making the case for my organizational competence, that my medicine cabinet is the stuff Good Housekeeping photo shoots are made of— everything in its place, and not an out-of-date prescription or crumpled tube of toothpaste to be found. Unfortunately, as I am forced to admit, excavating anything out of the cabinet under the bathroom sink requires a pickaxe and a mining helmet. Even my generally tidy laundry

room, with its bins for presorting and back-up bottles of detergent, has a way of managing to suddenly and eerily burst forth with an explosion of dirty clothes that didn t seem to be there just a minute before, like mushrooms after a rainstorm. I bring this up only because over the next few weeks, like so many others, I plan to be fully engulfed in Spring Cleaning, that wonderful few weeks of every year where the person we deeply wish to be is forced to reckon with the person we actually are. I will once again pin my hopes to the idea that the right configuration of bins, baskets and drawer organizers will streamline

my life, or that placing a lovely basket by the front door for keys, wallets and phones will eliminate my morning ritual of tearing the house apart in search of one (or all) of the three. I will dust things that will not be dusted again until the following spring, and throw out things I can’t even remember bringing in. I will clean out the pantry, go through the closets, and pledge, once again, to stop collecting stuff I don’t need. “See you again same time next year?” the little voice in my head will say, as I’m lugging the last Hefty bag out to the car. “Yes,” I will sigh, knowing the truth. “You probably will.”

Coming together for the cause, protestors walked into history By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

It’s truly amazing how one simple vignette in everyday life can trigger a myriad of memories, past experiences or distinct recollections. So it was when I drove down Main Street and saw the streets packed with women walking hurriedly along the sidewalk. But one of the pedestrians stood out and captured my attention. A woman

walked briskly holding her dress shoes in one hand and her pocketbook in the other. I searched for an answer regarding this single everyday occurrence that jolted my memory bank; and then it suddenly dawned on me. Why would this woman walking with shoes in hand make such an impression on me and why couldn’t I get it out of my mind … and then it dawned on me. I’d seen women walking en masse with shoes in hand decades

early along Dexter Avenue in Montgomery, Alabama. As empty buses passed, African American women walked to their places of employment with dress shoes in hand. For months in 1955 and 1956, no blacks in Montgomery took the bus in protest over the system’s segregation policy that forced non-whites to the back of the bus. For the first time, the African American community recognized its economic power and its ability

to prompt change. The protest began when local Civil Rights activist Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white person, and was jailed for violating the city’s policy. It’s painfully funny how issues of such significance can escape attention, but, as a child, I didn’t realize why blacks crowded the streets each morning and evening. Letter to the Editor Relay For Life walker does it for her family — and for yours, too Dear Editor, Several years ago, I think about 18, I started participating in Relay for Life--doing an aerobics event, walking, helping the committee, and one event that I truly enjoy, our Survivor Recognition. We have done cake and punch at our big Relay event, then a few years ago we began a separate recognition event. Yearly now, we host a Survivor Luncheon to demonstrate our appreciation of the valiant fight all survivors and their caregivers experience from the first moment they are told “You have cancer.” We provide a lunch, a photo with their caregiver, speakers and, what we hope is the comforting knowledge that we care and truly wish the best to them in their battle. Our event this year is from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, at Grace Episcopal Church Hall (2955 River Road West in Goochland). If you are a cancer survivor, you and a guest are welcome. RSVP by April 22 to valpace@ymail.com or (804) 7639187. I said at the beginning that I have been participating with Relay for about 18 years - I started with the hopes that my few dollars and my ground-level efforts would help with finding a cure and lowering the odds of a diagnosis. In that time, my father has passed from cancer and three of my four sisters have been diagnosed, so I will continue to Relay for them, for improved and less grueling treatment plans, for a cure. And I walk for you and your families, so that they benefit from the efforts of millions of dollars funding research, care, education and support. If you are a survivor, please consider joining us with your caregiver at our luncheon and come out to Relay so we can further celebrate see Letter > page 7

Walking continued from >6 Montgomery was the hub of a massive car pooling effort that allowed the boycott to continue for more than a year, almost bankrupting the city’s bus system. Groups organized lines of vehicles packed with people heading to or coming home from work. Little did I realize I was walking along streets that would become famous in later years as leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Ralph Abernathy joined the protest. At my grandmother’s house, it was always someone’s job to take Pearl Lee, the family maid, but, in actuality, much more, to her home on the other side of Montgomery. Although the bus ran in front of my grandparents’ home, Pearl Lee never took it and she finished her day, changed her clothes, and patiently waited for a ride. Sometimes, her relatives would come to pick her up, but more often one of my uncles would arrive and drive her home. I now understand why the rides were so important. Six decades later, the sacrifice and determination dis-

played by those Montgomery residents is recognized as the beginning of a movement that began the march toward equal rights in America. And those women who walked with shoes in hand were heading toward a much more important destination than their places of work. They walked to change attitudes and bring a nation to the realization that separate but equal was a philosophy of the past. We often forget the small steps necessary to make big changes in our society or how difficult taking the first of those moves can be, but the memory of those women walking to work for days on end will always represent an important milestone in a struggle that began on streets on which I played as a child. It’s easy for a nation to recall the major events in history, but often it’s those little steps that truly change the course of a nation that are the most overlooked, or lost in time. The folks who participated in that Montgomery bus boycott are probably all gone today, but the sacrifices they made and the determination of purpose serve as valuable lessons for this generation, and the ones to follow.

CASA concert to feature ‘The Taters’ Contributed report

April is Prevent child abuse month, and it is also the month when Goochland CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) is busy preparing for its annual concert. This year the concert will be held on Friday, May 18, at Camp Brady Cub Scout camp (1777 Maidens Road in Maidens) and will feature music from the Taters. This band has been performing together for 20 years and gets the audience involved with its toe-tapping music and light-hearted fun. Goochland CASA (Court

Appointed Special Advocate) is a member of a network of 951 community-based programs that recruit, train and support citizen-volunteers. These volunteers advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children in courtrooms and communities. Volunteer advocates, empowered directly by the courts, offer judges the critical information they need to ensure that each child’s rights and needs are being attended to while in foster care. Volunteers stay with children until they are placed in loving perma-

nent homes. For many abused children, a CASA volunteer is the only constant adult presence in their lives. Goochland CASA started in 2005 with three volunteers. Goochland CASA now has 24 volunteers who serve between 60-70 children annually. Each volunteer completes a comprehensive training program before being sworn in by the judge. Tickets for this rain or shine event are $25 and include one free drink. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the concert starting at 7:30. The Haywood Food Truck and the Traveler’s

Food Truck will be on hand to offer food, and beer and wine will also be available. This year organizers are also offering two dozen themed baskets to raffle off, including a “For Mom and Baby Basket,” a “Let’s Have a Picnic Basket,” a “Wine-ing Down Basket,” and many more. Raffle tickets are available from any board member or at the door. Concert Tickets may be purchased by calling the Goochland CASA office at (804) 556-5876 or by visiting the organization’s website at www.goochlandcasa.org.

Area residents coming together to help fight opioid crisis RSAAC focuses on education and prevention Contributed report

For those who are aware of the opioid crisis but unsure about the whole issue, the Rural Substance Abuse Awareness Coalition (RSAAC) serving Goochland and Powhatan counties would like to provide some information to begin the education process. RSAAC was formed in 2012 to energize Goochland and Powhatan counties to combat substance abuse. Our mission is to inspire, equip, and educate the people of Goochland and Powhatan on the issues of substance abuse of prevention initiatives, along with treatment providers or support groups. The National Institute on

Drug Abuse provides a laymen’s description of opioids as a class of drugs that include legally prescribed pain relievers such as oxycodone (OxyContin ®), hydrocodone (Vicodin®), codeine, morphine, and the illegal drugs heroin, synthetic opioids such as fentanyl and many others. Most opioids are derived from compounds from the opium poppy. These drugs have provided millions of people with relief from both acute and chronic pain and are generally safe when taken for a short period of time and as prescribed by a doctor. However, when misused, opioid pain relievers can lead to addiction, overdose incidents, and death. The brain changes with over use of addictive substances. What frequently happens is the original goal of eliminating pain, or getting a euphoric “high” in the case of recre-

ational use, is replaced with a need to continue taking the drug just to feel normal. The desire goes beyond what selfdiscipline can handle, because the brain is no longer functioning as it did before. Frequently, when the pain pills become unavailable, the user switches to the less expensive and street available option- heroin and/ or fentanyl or other synthetic compounds, which are driving the epidemic of overdoses and deaths. The risk of developing an addiction varies from person to person and involves many different factors such as genetics, mental and physical health, environment, and age. There is much that is being done to fight the opioid abuse problem. The Virginia Board of Medicine along with the Commonwealth’s legislative bodies have laid out specific regulations and recommendations on the prescribing of

opioids in both chronic and acute pain remedies. This includes proper evaluation and treatment of pain issues as well as penalties for abuse of such regulations. Significantly, there is a prescription monitoring program (PMP) that provides prescribers and pharmacies with a database of all opioid prescriptions that must be consulted prior to writing or filling a prescription for opioids. There are 19 states that have similar databases that can be accessed including our 4 surrounding states to prevent users from “shopping doctors or pharmacies” to get their prescriptions filled beyond their original purpose across state lines. RSAAC has participated in drug take back programs to eliminate unused prescriptions from falling into the wrong hands (think your teenagers, grandkids or neigh-

bors), screening and promoting anti-drug videos such as “Chasing the Dragon: The Life of an Opiate Addict”; promoting programs such as “Heroes Not Heroin”, and working with public schools and student programs such as “Kick Butts.” RSAAC has also supported “Revive” training sessions with naloxone, which treats opioid overdoses to potentially save a life. Naloxone can be purchased at area pharmacies under a standing order by the Virginia Health Commissioner. Emergency Services Departments in both counties are trained to administer naloxone. In 2017, Goochland Fire-Rescue and Emergency Services responded to 32 overdoses of all types, and naloxone was administered 17 times. In less than the first 2 months of 2018, they had administered nalox-

one 4 times already. In 2017, Powhatan Emergency Rescue Services responded to 42 overdoses of all types and 4 deaths from opioid overdoses. There is a continuum of treatment for substance abuse. Regarding opioid related concerns, first consult your doctor who prescribed your medication, or if you don’t have a primary care physician, visit the Goochland Powhatan Community Service Board, or if you have insurance, contact your insurance company. There are outpatient treatment options for regular consultation with professionals, inpatient treatment in a hospital for intensive care, residential treatment in highly structured care in a nonhospital setting, and recovery-housing providing supervised treatment programs. Goochland head coach Joe Fowler (right), shown instructing then-quarterback Reid Chenault at the Division 2 state championship game in Salem in 2012, has been the Bulldogs head football coach for 17 years, but is hanging up his whistle to become Goochland’s athletic director.

Fowler named Goochland athletic director By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

Over the past 17 seasons, the roster has changed constantly for the Goochland Bulldogs football team, whether it was due to various reasons, such as injury or graduation. But, one constant has

stayed the same over that time span: head coach Joe Fowler. That constant will now change for the 2018-19 school year as Fowler will step down from the role of head football coach of the Bulldogs to take up the role of director of Student Activities for Goochland High School. Fowler, who has served as

assistant athletic director for the past six years, will take the place of Bryan Gordon who is retiring from the role at the end of this school year. “I have mixed emotions,” Fowler said. “I’m excited about the opportunity to step into the role of athletic director, but I’m really going to miss coaching football. It’s

been such a huge part of my life and my family’s life for so many years.” “When I had the opportunity to tell the kids yesterday, it was hard for me. It was difficult since I’ve been doing it for so long,” he said. The Bulldogs have enjoyed immense success under Fowler’s direction.

Goochland’s football team has been a constant contender on the scene in what is now known as Class 2. In his 17 seasons as head football coach, Fowler went 148-59. He won two state championships, in 2006 and 2012, and directed the team to three state championship finals.

Goochland went 12-1 last season, with its only loss coming in the Region 2A championship against Poquoson. Fowler was named Coach of the Year in Division 2 by the VHSL in both 2016 and 2017. He has been honored see Fowler>12

Six Goochland athletes make commitments official By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

The journey from high school student-athlete to a collegiate student-athlete was completed for six Goochland seniors on April 11 at Goochland High School. Two Bulldogs softball players, Katelin Martin and McKenzie Reams, committed to the same school, Eastern Mennonite University. “It feels pretty amazing,” Martin said. “I never thought I’d have this opportunity.” Martin said that she wasn’t initially planning to play sports in college and originally wanted to attend James Madison University. She said that the location of the school was one big attractor for her. “I love how small it is,” she said. “The smallest class size they have is, I think, six. So, it’s very community-based.” Martin said she hopes to major in general education while at EMU. Her time at Goochland will be remembered by the teammates that she had, she said. “All the girls on this team, I’ve played with my entire life,” she said. “So, they’re going to go with me wherever I go.” Like her teammate, Reams said her chance to play with the Royals came about thanks to her travel ball experiences. “I got to get out and go play around that area,” she said. “I just had the opportunity to meet them.” Reams also knows some of the players currently on the Royals roster and she said that she likes the school, the coaches and the area as well. Also the same as Martin, Reams chose Eastern

Mennonite over James Madison. She hopes to major in nursing. As far as what she’ll remember about Goochland, Reams said it was all about her fellow players. “I’ll definitely remember my teammates mostly as well as the competitiveness of the team,” she said. Eastern Mennonite competes in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. Goochland senior runner Austin Bruce signed his letter of intent to run at Regent University. Bruce was ecstatic about his run to college athletics come to fruition. “It felt really good,” he said. “I’ve been waiting for this for a long time.” Regent University is located in Virginia Beach and competes in Division I South of the National Christian Collegiate Athletics Association. “I worked my butt off for a long time,” he said. “And, they offered it to me. I’m very grateful for that.” Bruce said that it was very simple for him as to why Regent was the right place for him. “They had my major,” he said. “And they offered me a scholarship to go run in circles. So, I had to. Anyone who would let me run and would pay me to do it, you have to do it.” Bruce said he hopes to pursue a career as a math teacher. “I’m going to remember those tough meets and all those people I got to meet,” he said. “I’m going to remember all those times that we just got to bust out miles.” Max Presley, a senior tennis player, signed his commit-

ment to Randolph College. “It’s so exciting,” Presley said through his interpreter. “I learned that the team was doing awesome. I wanted to go and help them continue to improve next year.” Presley, who communicates through sign language, is one of the core members of the Bulldogs tennis team as one of only two seniors on the team. While he is headed off to Lynchburg, Goochland will always be special to him. “Goochland will always be in my heart,” he said. “I’ll never forget about it. It’ll be in my heart forever.” He said he hopes to

study math and art while at Randolph. Football player Dallas Holmes will also be heading to a school in the ODAC in Randolph-Macon and said that it feels good that he got to sign with the Yellow Jackets. He said that coach Joe Fowler introduced him to an assistant coach on the Randolph-Macon coaching staff. “They came to the school and we just hit it off,” Holmes said. “We were talking in the school and it went on from there.” Holmes, a stout basketball player for the Bulldogs as well, said that the campus

in Ashland had a family-like atmosphere to it. “When I went on my overnight (visit), it was just closeknit,” he said. “I just clicked with everyone on the team.” Holmes said that he’s excited to get to work for Randolph-Macon, as he hopes to build muscle and be faster on the field. He said that he hopes to study business while in college. Goochland volleyball player Kealie Lachniet also signed to her home for the next four years at Carson-Newman. “It feels really good,” she said. “It’s a giant weight off my chest.”

Lachniet said that the search went on for about a year before she emailed the coach at Carson-Newman. “I emailed the coach and asked if he was looking for a (designated setter,)” she said. “He said he liked me and was going to talk to me about it. I went for a visit and by the end of the visit he said I had the offer. I called back that night and accepted. It happened really fast.” Lachniet won a state championship with the Bulldogs and that experience was what she said she’ll remember most about her time in high school. Lachniet said that she plans to study nursing.

Roundup: Goochland softball riding four-game win streak By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

After dropping its seasonopener to Nottoway on March 15, the Goochland Bulldogs softball team has gone on a four-game win streak. On April 10, the Bulldogs traveled to Randolph-Henry and defeated the Statesmen 9-6. Cherish Sims led Goochland, going 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs. Keisha Braxton was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs, while Carleigh Gilstrap was 2 for 3 with three runs scored. On Thursday, April 12, Goochland took down Prince Edward 8-1 in another James River District showdown. Sims was 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs and two runs scored, while Gilstrap was 2 for 2 with three runs scored. McKenzie Reams was 2 for 4 with one RBI. On Friday, April 13, the Bulldogs kept the momentum going with a 5-0 win over Central Lunenburg. Goochland recorded

Fowler continued from >10 by the Associated Press, Richmond Touchdown Club as well as the James River District and Region 2A as Coach of the Year as well, according to the press release announcing his move. Fowler said that the success of the program comes in large part from the character of the athletes from the Goochland community. “We’re blessed to have talented players, but more importantly kids with character because their parents have raised them in such a way

only three hits against the Chargers, but one each from Lexi Hooe and Reams brought runs across the plate. Katelin Martin was dealing from the circle, as she went a complete game with seven strikeouts. Goochland was scheduled to play on April 16, but that game was postponed due to wet fields. The Bulldogs played on Tuesday, April 17, at Amelia and traveled to Central Lunenburg on Thursday, April 19.

Goochland’s baseball team took to the diamond and won two of its last three games. On April 10, the Bulldogs fell 3-2 to Randolph-Henry. The Statesmen scored two runs in the second before the Bulldogs got on the board in the fifth, after John King forced a fielder’s choice, which allowed Potts to score from third after some small ball by Murray as he executed

a sacrifice bunt to advance Potts to third. Goochland tied the game in the sixth and the game eventually went to eight innings before the Statesmen won it. On Thursday, April 12, Goochland defeated Prince Edward 12-11 in a game that was all about offense. After a 2-1 lead for the Eagles in the first, Goochland plated three to take the lead in the top of the second. Prince Edward responded with an eight-spot in the bottom of the second to make it 9-4. The Eagles added one more run in the bottom of the fourth before Goochland’s offense exploded for six runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game at 10-10. Prince Edward regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth, but the Bulldogs responded in the top of the sixth with two runs to make it 12-11. Goochland was able to hold off the Eagles to grab

that they can accept coaching,” he said. “They know that when we coach them and get on them it’s because we love them. They go out and play hard on Friday nights and their effort offsets everything.” Athletes from Fowler’s past teams have gone on to play football at colleges from Division I to Division III, both in-state and around the country. The University of Richmond, HampdenSydney, Randolph-Macon and Shenandoah, to name a few, all had Goochland graduates on their 2017 rosters. One high profile recruit

was D.J. Coles, who was a member of the 2006 state championship team and went on to play at Virginia Tech. John Hicks also played football for Fowler at Goochland, but went on to play baseball at the University of Virginia and now plays with the Detroit Tigers. As Fowler looks forward to his new role, he said he’s learned a lot from his predecessor. “There’s an old saying ‘If it’s not broke, don’t fix it,’ ” he said. “There are so many great things going on here. Coach Gordon runs the model program. I’ve tried to soak up as much as I could over the past

BASEBALL

the win. Finally, on Friday, April 13, Goochland took down Central Lunenburg 21-6. Three hits and three errors in the bottom of the second allowed the Chargers to lead 4-1 early, but a 12-run inning from Goochland made it 13-4 and set the tone for the rest of the game.

The distance medley relay team finished second with a 14:45.28, while the 4x100 meter relay team finished third with a 52.52. Aishlin Hyman finished third in the high jump with a four-foot, six-inch mark. Maddie Muniz was fifth with the same mark as Hyman.

Goochland’s boys and girls track teams had their first action of the season on April 11 against Amelia and Nottoway. The boys team won their meet with 87.5 points, besting Amelia’s 55 and Nottoway’s 23.5. The girls also won, record-

ing 79 points to Amelia’s 43 and Nottoway’s 40. On April 14, the Bulldogs traveled to Massaponax for the Panther Invitational and performed well against a large field. Austin Bruce won the 1600 meters with a time of 4:48.93. John Williams was 14th in that event with a 5:29.60. The distance medley relay team also won their event with a 12:12.95. Devin McCray finished fourth in the 200 meter with a 23.29 and sixth in the 100 meters with a 11.70. Grace Juran posted a second place finish in the 3200 meters with a 13:08.58. Zella Warner was third with a 13:29.84 and Marissa Schroder was sixth with a 14:27.20. She also finished third in the 1600 meters with a 5:57.51. Anna Kate Wirsing was fifth in that event with a 6:04.97 and Elizabeth Golightly was 10th with a 7:13.37.

20 years from him. I’m going to try to carry all those things forward and continue to do the things that have made Goochland High School so successful.” “Eventually, I’ll put my own spin on things, but I’m going to ease into it and try to figure things out,” Fowler said. Dr. Jeremy Raley, Goochland County Public Schools superintendent, said in the press release that Fowler’s hiring builds upon the tradition of success in academics and extracurriculars at Goochland High School. “His success as a coach and a teacher as well as his

commitment to our community will make this important transition a win for Goochland,” he said. Fowler said that there is some trepidation as he approaches taking over the role, as he doesn’t know what he doesn’t know quite yet. “There are a lot of things I don’t know,” he said. “The scariest things are the things I don’t know that I don’t know that will end up biting me. But, I’ll figure it out as I go. I’ll work hard and give everything I can.” Goochland has officially begun the search for Fowler’s replacement to lead the Bulldogs, as the job was

posted online on Wednesday, April 11. “We’ll get into the process of getting the right person in the spot,” Fowler said of finding his replacement on the sidelines. “I want to make sure that we get the right person to work with these kids,” he said. “These kids mean a lot to me and I want to turn them over to someone I really trust,” he added. Fowler said that this opportunity came at the right time for him in his career in the only place that he’s ever wanted to be. “I’ve never wanted to work anywhere but here,” he said.

Kindergarten registration event today

Volunteers continued from >1 ‘God bless the volunteers who help with kindness.’ GoochlandCares appreciates its volunteers every day, but National Volunteer Week is dedicated to honoring all volunteers as well as encouraging volunteerism throughout the year. If you know someone who volunteers their time with GoochlandCares or at any other organization, be sure to thank them for the work that they do for the Goochland community. Hundreds of volunteers helped GoochlandCares move from four locations throughout the Courthouse area into the one new building at 2999 River Road West this past January. Volunteers were instrumental in getting the building ready for clients to access all twelve services. From picking up food to setting up the Clothes Closet to moving equipment into the Clinic’s examining rooms, volunteers worked many hours for several weeks. “Because of our volunteers, most client services remained uninterrupted during the move,” said Sally Graham, executive director of GoochlandCares. “In the new building, our volunteers’ commitment to helping out

There is quite a bit of paperwork needed to register a child for kindergarten, and pulling everything together takes time. Parents and caregivers are still encouraged to attend registration even if they do not have all the documents because exceptions could apply. The following documents are needed for registration: Child’s official, certified birth certificate or school age

affidavit in accordance with state law Two proofs of address School Entrance Health Form (This can be turned in any time before the first day) Photo ID for parent or legal guardian For more information about kindergarten registration and what to bring on April 19, parents can visit www. neighbors in need allowed us to expand Food Pantry hours to five days, or 37 hours a week, to serve more clients than ever, and to be at the front desk reception area at all times during business hours. Our volunteers are the heart of our organization. We simply cannot fulfill our vision to provide our comprehensive care services for nearly 1,600 residents without our vast volunteer corps.” Visit GoochlandCares any day of the week, and there are volunteers donating their time and talents. They are stocking shelves in the Food Pantry, sorting donations at the Clothes Closet, taking blood pressure at the Free Clinic, answering and making phone calls. Not only do individuals contribute, but also groups from universities, schools, churches, organizations, and corporations volunteer with specific projects. Local churches provide dinners for staff while the building is open late on Tuesday evenings. Performance Food Group donates turkeys and sides for Thanksgiving and sends volunteers to help distribute. Capital One sends volunteer teams throughout the year. CarMax teams help in the Food Pantry and Clothes Closet and have committed to a service day in June. There are many ways to be involved at GoochlandCares

depending on schedules, interests, and talents. Anyone interested in getting involved is urged to fill out the volunteer application at GoochlandCares.org or call (804) 556.0712. The Clothes Closet, the organization’s thrift store in Goochland for Goochland, has openings for volunteers to help sort, hang, and price donations. The Food Pantry has volunteer openings throughout the week to help collect food, stock shelves, distribute food, and organize food drives. Licensed medical professionals are needed at the Free Clinic. Dental professionals are needed at the Dental Clinic. Skilled volunteers are needed to assist with critical home repairs. GoochlandCares is a private, 501(c)(3), non-profit corporation that provides health care and basic human services to Goochland residents in need. GoochlandCares envisions a community where everyone’s basic human needs are met. For more information visit www.GoochlandCares. org or contact Adair Roper, aroper@GoochlandCares.org, (804) 556-6260.
