It may not be much to look at, but the former Company 6 volunteer fire station on Broad Street Road does have quite a history.

It is also, for anyone who might be interested, now priced to move.

According to Billy McGuire, president of the Goochland Fire-Rescue Volunteer Association, the building that once served as a home away from home for the many dedicated volunteers of Company 6 has not attracted much interest since see Fire Station > 2

Candidates have sights set on Brat’s seat

elen Alli, who is vying for the chance to challenge Dave Brat, R-7th, in the next election, joined fellow Democratic candidates Abigail Spanberger and Dan Ward for a candidates forum at the Goochland Recreation Center last Thursday. The forum, cosponsored by the Goochland County Democratic Committee and the Powhatan County Democratic Committee, allowed the candidates to share their views on everything from campaign finance, to health care, to climate change. One particularly memorable moment: the candidates were asked if they were willing to “get in Dave Brat’s grill,” a reference to a comment Brat made last year about being harassed by his female constituents. Each insisted they would be happy to do so.

With the exception of a few calls, interest has been almost nonexistent, McGuire told the county Board of Supervisors earlier this month. In order to attract a potential buyer, the price for the building has been lowered from just north of $300,000 to $295,000.

According to Goochland Fire-EMS Chief Bill MacKay, finding a buyer willing to buy the former station will likely be challenging. The building, which is owned by the Volunteer Association, has been vacant since early last

year, when the department pulled up stakes and headed across the road to their brand new building, a fully modernized facility complete with spacious sleeping quarters, laundry and exercise rooms, and a training area with seating for up to 40 people.

It was, by all accounts, an upgrade: while it may have been considered “charming” or “cozy” in real estate speak, the former Company 6 scored low on both space and functionality. Built in 1965, the building lacked even basic shower or dormitory facilities, and the equipment bays were barely large enough to hold the engines housed there.

Goochland Rotary Club offering scholarship; deadline is April 15 Contributed report

The Rotary Club of Goochland has announced that it will award a one-time scholarship of at least $1,500 to a graduating senior who either attends Goochland High School or resides in Goochland County and who plans on attending a two- or four-year college or university.

Applicants must complete the Rotary Club Scholarship Application which may be found on the Rotary Club of Goochland’s website at www. goochlandrotary.com under

the “Scholarship Application” tab. The required documents needed for the application to be considered include a copy of the student’s current transcript (unofficial is acceptable) and two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a school faculty member. The second letter of recommendation must be from a non-family faculty member or community leader. Applications must be completed by April 15, 2018.

Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.

The scholarship must

be used within two years of high school graduation, and dependents of Rotary Club of Goochland members are not eligible. The award will be presented in June 2018 and the recipient will be asked to attend a meeting of the Rotary Club of Goochland. Information regarding disbursement of the scholarship funds will be provided to awardee.

“Broadband is essential for those of us who live in rural areas—we simply cannot compete without it. And there are too many areas that lack it. I think we need to have a cooperative process for this, because private industry is not going to come out to Goochland or Powhatan or Louisa.

It’s not profitable for them. It’s going to require a government assistance program similar to the Electric Cooperative.”

“I absolutely think the federal government should help.

I think the rural areas should have some accountability and have to pay a share, but it’s up to our government to make sure that all of our citizens have a level playing field— and without broadband we do not have a level playing field. There have been promises made about high speed internet and somehow they weasel out of them — we have to make sure that we hold our elected officials accountable and see that they come up with a plan.”

“This is an economic issue, because it allows businesses and individuals to move to certain areas.

It’s also an educational issue, and our members of Congress must act. This is the perfect opportunity for someone from the 7th district to be able to work with representatives from across the country, because access to broadband is a stumbling block for localities across the nation.”

The Delta Dental of Virginia Foundation has awarded $370,500 in grants to support 40 organizations across the Commonwealth, including a $5,000 grant for Goochland Cares.

The funds will allow the organization (formerly known as Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services) to expand dental hygiene services as part of an effort to improve oral healthcare in the region.

“Delta Dental believes in the power of a healthy smile and the importance of oral health to overall health and wellbeing,” said Frank Lucia, president and CEO of Delta Dental of Virginia. “We are proud to partner with these wonderful organizations to improve the lives of so many Virginians.”

The foundation has provided more than $4.2 million in funding to 63 organizations over the past six years.

Founded in 2012 with an initial $2.5 million donation from Delta Dental of Virginia, the foundation provides grants to Virginia not-for-profit organizations with a focus on community-based safety-net programs.

Many of the grants awarded focus on key areas of need throughout Virginia – the state’s youth, the uninsured and medically underserved population and dental professionals in training.

Alice was born to George and Edna Anagnos on Aug. 16, 1928, in Red Hook, New York. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Col. Floyd A. FRANK H. REICHEL JR. Dr. Frank Hartranft Reichel Jr., of Telluride, Colorado, formerly of Villanova, Pennsylvania, died peacefully in his sleep on Feb. 3, 2018, at the age of 89. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, on March 2, 1928, the only child of Frank Ha r t r a n f t and Marian R e e d REICHEL Reichel, b o t h originally from western Pennsylvania. He was raised in Fredericksburg, where his father was one of a group that founded Sylvania Industrial Corporation. He attended St. Albans School for Boys and Woodberry Forest before graduating from Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. He graduated from Yale University in 1948 and received his Ph.D. in chemistry in 1951 from Yale Graduate School. In his early career, he worked as a chemist with Mound Laboratories in Ohio and was director of research for the Ketchikan Pulp Company in Alaska. He

married Beatrice Adelaide Hinson of Atlanta, Georgia, on March 26, 1955, and the young couple lived outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He worked at FMC Corporation in Philadelphia from 1963 to 1965. He became President and Chairman of the Board of American Viscose Corporation, Radnor, Pennsylvania, a holding company, in 1965 and CEO in 1976 until his retirement in 1980. Directorships included Davison Sand & Gravel Co. and Raybestos-Manhattan, Inc. Frank served as a Trustee of Episcopal Academy in Merion, Pennsylvania, and Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, and served on the Board of Managers of the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. Frank was an avid skier into his seventies and a loyal supporter of the U.S. Ski Team with his wife Bee, a former U.S. Ski Team Trustee. He also loved windsurfing, especially in the Columbia River Gorge. Frank was a knowledgeable and skilled gardener and enjoyed fine food, wine and travel. Frank is survived by his beloved wife, Bee, of almost 63 years; and two children, Lynn Reichel Coombe of Lake Oswego, Oregon, and Frank H. Reichel III and his wife, Sue, of Manakin-Sabot; and six grandchildren, Frank H. “Hardy” Reichel IV and his wife, Jessie, of Big Arm, Montana., Jamie Nohl Chaix of Portland, Oregon, Hope Frances Reichel of Richmond, Cory Greene Coombe of Portland,

The organization is presenting a free four-lecture series on how to get started on family genealogy, find information

about ancestors, and use census records and other genealogical resources and databases. The last class will feature a speaker knowledgeable about DNA testing and how it can help with genealogy. Two of the remaining three classes will be held from 1 - 2:30

Any person doing business in Goochland County that has yearly gross receipts over $4000 must purchase a Goochland Business License to legally operate in Goochland County. This is a yearly license and runs from January 1 to December 31 of each year. Applications were sent out to businesses already registered with Goochland in the prior year and should have

Goochland Real Estate Tax Relief for the Elderly and Disabled It is time to file your Tax Relief for the Elderly and Disabled application with the Commissioner of the Revenue’s office. Dear curlers, I can relate

As I mentioned in last week’s column, I’ve been making a special point this month to watch as much coverage of the Winter Olympics as I can. Like most people, I wouldn’t say I have a ton of extra free time to devote to such pursuits, but I’ve still managed to watch at least a few of the events I had never taken the time to check out before.

I only say this to help explain why I found myself the other night taking in an entire curling match, this one being between Sweden and Russia.

Now I know what you are probably thinking: I am about to start mercilessly making fun of curling, a sport reportedly invented in Scotland that involves a 40-pound hunk of granite, an ice rink, and a bunch of tiny brooms. If you are thinking that, however, you are decidedly incorrect.

Yes, like I would assume many Americans probably do, I have a hard time wrapping my head around a sport that, to the untrained eye, looks a little like a combination of ice skating, bowling and house cleaning. And even though it is reportedly wildly popular in many European countries, I can’t see it gaining a massive, arena-filling following here anytime soon.

No, I can’t explain why I watched the curling contest, but what I can do is to share the very best curling story that I’ve heard so far. According to the man doing the color commentary for see Olympics > 7

Same language, new generation

hile recently traveling the interstate, the rain almost made it impossible to see the road, and I quickly realized that speed limits are just that. I slowed down as the hurried travelers zoomed by, paying no attention to the wet roads and hazardous conditions.

I had three children in my car, so a reduction in speed seemed like the prudent thing to do, but my kids immediately questioned the reduced speed.

I explained that driving on a wet road is precarious, and, no sooner than I said it, a car slid to the shoulder, barely escaping a serious accident or injury.

“Whoa, Nellie!” I yelled as I watched the incident.

“What does that mean?” one of my kids asked with a familiar clueless expression.

I tried to think where the expression came from, and, after some thought, I remembered what I thought to be its origin.

Explaining was even more difficult as I tried to describe an old television show starring Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. That discussion was even more puzzling to them, and I quickly noticed that look on their face that immediately screams alien language alert.

The whole episode made me think a few things.

Firstly, people in their 60s shouldn’t have small kids. For one thing, there’s a generational gap that is clearly demonstrated in the language. And the way things were expressed in the 1950s is a far cry from the way kids talk today.

I could think of a thousand examples of things I talk about that have no meaning to anyone under the age of 35. They have no idea what hanging up a phone means, or why foil is Reynolds Wrap.

It’s scary to think that they don’t know what I’m saying about 50 percent of the time, or perhaps reassuring to know they don’t. see New generation > 7

Letters to the Editor These days, both equal protection and opportunities exist for all Americans Dear Editor, Booker T. Washington (1856-1915), former slave and founder of Tuskegee Institute, in his book “My larger education, states I am afraid that there is a certain class of race problem solvers who don t want the patient to get well, because as long as the disease holds out they have not only an easy means of making a living, but also an easy medium through which to make themselves prominent before the public. This certainly seems true among some pressure groups.

Former NFL Super Bowl Champion Burgess Owens, in his book “ Liberalism Or How To Turn Good Men Into Whiners, Weenies And Wimps” (his title not mine) states “We have a society in which black Americans have earned, elected and have built businesses to the highest levels available within our society. Our nation has elected for two terms a black President. There are no schools, jobs, positions or business opportunities that are off limits based on skin color. That is huge and should not be minimized as mere steps toward equal protection and opportunities for all.

Unfortunately racism exists, but it is not institutionalized in American government. Back to Burgess Owens: During those times when we experience the anger and negative actions of a few, remember the kindness and charity of the many, many more. It is within this vast majority of good where we find the true heart of America.

The 11th annual “Strike Out Cancer Bowling Challenge” will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 24, at Bowl America Short Pump (4400 Pouncey Tract Road, in Glen Allen). This event serves as more than just a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. It also serves as a way to honor and to remember those who have had cancer; as an outreach to those desperately seeking information and resources for themselves or a loved one battling cancer; and as a way to get out aggression for all of the pain, sorrow, discomfort, fears, and overwhelming emotional and financial burdens that cancer has placed on so many individuals and families.

For this event, people of all ages and of all bowling skills come together in fellowship, mentorship, and in friendly competition to bowl three games of what we call 9-pin no tap bowling. With this special style of bowling, it helps everyone to achieve a little higher score by only needing to knock down 9 pins to count as a strike.

Manakin Company 1 Auxiliary hosting annual Pancake Supper Contributed report

The Manakin Company 1 Auxiliary will be hosting the organization’s annual Pancake Supper from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 10.

The auxiliary has been holding the event since 2000, enjoying a record year in 2006 when members sold nearly 700 tickets. Currently the pancake supper is the auxiliary’s biggest fundraiser, though in the past

When it comes to cookies, the timing matters

t’s that time of year again— Girl Scout cookies time! Those yummy little bits of sugar and peanut butter will always be one of my favorite traditions. I will buy some amount of Girl Scout cookies every year. It doesn’t matter if it is Lent or I am on a diet. Heck, I could be on my death bed and not able to eat anything, but I will buy TagAlong Girl Scout cookies!

ENTERTAINING: Recipes, Tips and Advice Many bakers out there are creating and posting recipes for knockoff Girl Scout cookies but to them I say, “NAY!” These delicious little bundles of tradition should only be consumed from mid-March to mid-April — later if you stockpile them in our freezer—but only those baked by the Girl Scout baking companies will be eaten in my house. There is just something not customarily correct to me to eat a TagAlong or Thin Mint in October. The cookie doesn’t taste the same.

Even if you have recently purchased a salary’s worth of Girl Scout cookies from our local troops, it is still nice to bake some tasty treats at home.

These lemon cookies with a lemon buttercream icing have a springtime taste that will carry you through these last gloomy rainy weekends of winter.

Lemon Sugar Cookies

Cream together butter and sugar. Add egg, vanilla, sour cream, lemon juice and zest.

Ingredients Gently whisk together dry 1/2 cup softened butter ingredients in a separate bowl.

1 cup sugar Add 1/3 of the dry ingredi1 egg ents to butter mixture and mix 1 tsp vanilla extract to combine. Continue process, 1/3 cup sour cream adding 1/3 of the dry ingre2 TBSP lemon juice dients at a time until it’s all 1 TBSP lemon zest mixed in.

1/2 tsp salt Scoop out 1.5 TBSP of 1/2 tsp baking soda dough and roll into a ball.

2 cups all-purpose flour You can use a medium cookie scoop to make this process Lemon Buttercream faster. Rolling the cookie ball is optional, but I wanted very Frosting pretty cookies, so I took the 1/2 cup softened butter additional 5 seconds and rolled 1 tsp vanilla them individually. Place on 2 TBSP milk parchment lined cookie sheet.

2 TBSP lemon juice Bake at 375 for 10 minutes.

1 TBSP lemon zest Cool fully before frosting.

4 cups powdered sugar To make the frosting: Mix butter, vanilla, Directions milk, lemon juice and Preheat oven to 375 degrees zest for 30 seconds with F. Line a cookie sheet with a mixer. Add in parchment paper.

Transfer frosting to a piping bag with a star tip. Begin piping in a tight circle in the middle of the cookie. Continue piping frosting in a circular motion until you reach the outside of the cookie. I recommend not stacking cookies that have been frosted with a rosette so that you don’t squish them. Cookies frosted normally can be stacked though!

Goochland girls defeat Cavaliers, but fall to Poquoson

Early on, it looked as though an upset was brewing at Goochland High School on Feb. 16.

In the opening round game of the Region 2A playoffs, the No. 2 seeded Bulldogs

hosted the No. 7 seed King William Cavaliers and the visitors came out on fire in the first quarter.

Mallory Salmon hit two 3-point shots for King William and Channing Pits already had seven points as King William led by four after the first frame.

But, Goochland didn’t waver and pounced when the opportunity presented itself.

Spurred by a 10-0 run in the third quarter and benefitting from the Cavaliers foul troubles, the Bulldogs took down King William 54-49.

“I’m happy we got the win,” coach James Harris said.

“It was a little sloppy at times, but we came out big in the second half.”

Goochland kept pace with the Cavaliers through the first and second quarters, at most falling behind by nine points twice in the quarter.

The first of those spawned a 7-0 Goochland run that

included back-to-back hoops from Victoria Lopez, the second of which turned into a huge 3-point play that cut the deficit at the time to just two points.

After halftime, however, is when the Bulldogs transitioned from keeping pace to taking control.

Blake Thomas opened the quarter with a 3-point shot to make it a five point game.

Following a King William basket, Lanaysia Gonzalez answered with a layup prior to the King William foul trouble beginning.

Roundup: Bulldogs swimming competes at Class 2 states

Goochland’s swim team had a healthy representation at the Class 2 swim meet at SwimRVA on Feb. 15.

Goochland sent four relay teams, as well as two individuals each in two different events to the championship round of the state meet.

On the boys side, the 200 medley relay team of David Tremain, Garrett Kemmerly, Payton Harrigal and Caleb Cardani finished sixth in the state with a time of 1:51.44.

The 200 free relay team of Harrigal, Tremain, Kemmerly and Armandas Putinas also finished sixth in the state with a time of 1:39.45.

As a individual, Kemmerly finished fourth in the state in the 100 breast with a time of 1:06.21, just barely behind third-place Joseph Mistretta of Maggie Walker, who swam a 1:06.18.

He was also sixth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:12.69, just .40 seconds behind fifthplace Zachary Bennett of Poquoson.

“We’ve been plagued this season by injuries,” coach Ed Boyle said. “We had two girls that were injured and one that was sick (for the region meet.)

That really impacted the girls team. You have to have everyone on their top game.”

Friends’ ‘History Comes Alive’ event featured captivating local authors Seven Virginia authors shared excerpts from their books during the Second Annual Writers Roundup hosted by the Friends of the Goochland Branch Library on February 10, 2017.

The theme was “History Comes Alive,” and it did, with stories rooted in 16th century family history, scandalous local lore, and dramatic first-person accounts. Author readings were followed by a question and answer panel discussion and book signings.

The visiting authors gave the audience an opportunity to connect oneto-one! Seated, from left to right, are Julie Phend, Phyllis Brock Silber and Connie Lapallo. Standing are Mary Lynn Bayliss, James Richmond, Emerson “Willie” Williams and Bruce Venter.

The next Friends event is the Annual Day on Sunday, March 25 at 3 p.m. at the library. The guest speaker will be Mary Lynn Bayliss, author of The Dooleys of Richmond: An Irish Immigrant Family in the Old and New South.

Extension Office offering tips ahead of growing season Contributed report

Those who enjoy the idea of gardening at waist height and avoiding the pesky salad-loving critters who usually dine in the traditional garden may be interested in an upcoming workshop on creating a salad table. With a salad table, gardeners can extend the salad-growing season and grow the leafy greens they like

best without back strain. Participants in this workshop will learn an alternative method for growing leaf lettuce, arugula, kale, spinach, radish, parsley, cilantro, basil and more using “cut and come again” gardening methods.

The workshop is scheduled from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. on March 3, 2018 at the Goochland Parks and Recreation Building. This is a woodcraft project
