Arrest made in cigarette larceny case New York man accused of thefts in Chesterfield and Goochland

How do I know my voting equipment is accurate?

By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Goochland sheriff’s deputies have arrested a New York man believed to be involved in the theft of large quantities of cigarettes in the greater Richmond area. Maurice V. Brunson was arrested on Oct. 27 on three felony charges, two from Chesterfield County and one Brunson from Goochland. Alert clerks at the Wawa convenience store on West Broad Street just east of Route 288 recognized a photograph of Brunson, who was the suspect in two previous thefts as he lingered near the gas pumps that morning around 4:30 a.m. The clerks alerted the sheriff’s office and a Goochland deputy happened to be on the property at the time. Deputy Scott Leabough apprehended Brunson in the parking lot of the store. The arrests came as result see Larceny > 2

What to know before you go By Roslyn Ryan Editor

A

s thousands of registered voters are lining up at the polls in Goochland on Nov. 8, readying to help choose the next President of the United States, Judi Reid will not be among them. That’s because both she and her husband have already

cast their ballots, joining around 1,300 other Goochland residents Ragland who qualified to vote absentee. While Virginia is not one of the states that allows early voting, registered voters may vote absentee if they meet one see Election > 4

Time running out to vote absentee Those who wish to vote absentee in person—because they are living, working or going to school outside of their home locality, for example—must do so by this Saturday. For more information, contact the Registrar’s Office at (804) 556-5803.

Under the Code of Virginia, the State Board of Elections must approve any mechanical or electronic voting system or equipment before it can be used by any locality. Each system must successfully complete three distinct levels of testing: Qualification testing Testing of hardware and software that may be conducted by Independent Testing Authority. Certification testing To ensure it meets all applicable requirements of the Code of Virginia. Acceptance testing Conducted by the locality to assure it meets their needs and is identical to the certified system.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Due to our Tuesday press time, we will not be able to publish local election results in

our Nov. 10 edition. We will have results up on our website, however, and will publish a full report on Election Day in Goochland in our Nov. 17 edition.

Visitor offered young dancers glimpse of life as a professional By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer

Sometimes, the best way to teach students is by example, and when that illustration comes from a professional, it means even more. Goochland High School Dance I students got just that type of experience last week as they enjoyed a slice of Broadway delivered to their classroom in the form of professional dancer Mary Page Nance. The native Richmonder and State University of New York graduate most recently completed a run as an original cast member in the Broadway hit, Finding Neverland. She has performed for First Lady Michelle Obama in “Broadway at the White House.” She’s also appeared in the 69th Annual Tony Awards, and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. Nance was involved with Finding Neverland from its inception and worked on the play during its workshop stage, eventually landing a spot as an originial cast member. Even with her busy schedule, see Dancer > 3
