The Goochland County Planning Commission unanimously approved conditional use permits for two new communications towers in the western end of the county on April 6, paving the way for what county planning officials described as necessary improvements to the county’s emergency communication network. According to Qiana Foote, the county’s Director of Information Technology, the two projects are part of an ongoing effort to improve public safety communications in the county and meet FCC mandates. The current system, Foote said, cannot cover the entire county and has been shown to be deficient in several areas, potentially compromising safety. see Towers > 3

or Goochland Library Branch Manager Janet Melton, an accomplished painter whose work is currently on display at the library, colors have a life — and a language — all their own. A life-long fan of bold, expressive hues, the Goochland native said she uses her paintings to try to capture the essence of a feeling or of a particular moment in time. “Color, to me, is very emotional,” Melton said, and her process involves adding layer upon layer of paint to a piece and reworking it until she knows it’s done. Melton works primarily with acrylic paint these days, but those who visit the library can see another example of her artistic eye as well: An interior designer

Tea Party will hear from Brat Thursday Contributed report

The Goochland Tea Party will be hosting a Town Hall meeting for U.S. Rep. Dave Brat (R-7) at 7 p.m. today (Thursday, Aug. 20) at 2955 River Road West in Goochland. According to a press release issued by the group, Brat will offer an update on events in Washington, D.C., and answer questions from constituents. During the first half hour of the Brat meeting, local Republican candidates for the Nov. 3 election will have a chance to speak. Brat, a former professor at Randolph-Macon College, defeated House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in his district’s 2014 Republican primary, making him the first-ever primary challenger to oust a sitting House Majority Leader.
