A fire that destroyed a small art studio and a vehicle trailer last Thursday is being investigated as an act of arson, according to the Goochland County Sheriff’s Office. By the time fire crews arrived at the scene of the blaze, which shut down Rock Castle Road for over an hour last Wednesday, much of the damage had already been done. According to Goochland County Fire and EMS Chief Bill MacKay, firefighters found a structure fully engulfed in flames after responding to a call concerning 1409 Rock Castle Road. “By the time we got there most of the building was gone,” MacKay reported. MacKay said firefighters were immediately suspicious due to the amount of damage that had been done to the building, a former barn that had been converted into a studio. He also said they found evidence that an accelerant had been used. No one was injured in the blaze, and Goochland County Sheriff Jim Agnew declined to comment further, citing the ongoing investigation into the fire. Due to the fact that the Rock Castle property was not within reach of a hydrant, MacKay said, water was procured from nearby Bolling Hall Farm.
