Post 215 sponsoring students for upcoming Boys and Girls State

Corbin, who took first place it the District 13 contest on Jan. 24 at Goochland’s American Legion Post 215, came one step closer to his goal of winning the national contest when he placed first in the Northern Regional contest on Feb. 8. The annual American Legion Oratorical Contest, which offers high school students across the nation a chance to compete for scholarship money, was created to help students gain a better understanding of the United States Constitution. Supported this year by Goochland High School (GHS) teachers Neil Burch and Erin Yearout-Patton, the contest pushes students to demonstrate their knowledge

The American Legion (AL) and American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) from Post 215 in Goochland is starting the interview process to identify students for Boys State and Girls State. The ALA is interviewing junior girls from Goochland High School today (March 12). The AL will interview junior boys from both Goochland High School and Benedictine College Preparatory on March 18. Students are recommended to the Legion by the school guidance staff and are referred based on their leadership abilities, academics, interest in government

Local students excel in 2015 American Legion Oratorical Contest By Roslyn Ryan Editor

W

hile most of us would be happy to head South during these last few weeks of winter, Fluvanna High School junior Jonathan Corbin is eyeing a trip West. More specifically, Corbin is hoping to punch his ticket to Indianapolis, Indiana, in April for the National American Legion Oratorical Contest.

Get ready to get growing! Goochland-Powhatan Master Gardeners, together with J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College and Virginia Cooperative Extension, will celebrate spring from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 25 at the annual Spring Garden Fest. The event, which continues to grow, will be held on the college’s Goochland campus at 1851 Dickinson Road. Last year, more than 600 people attended a day dedicated to gardening education, horticultural demonstrations, vendors and plant sales. This year Spring Garden Fest offers online registration for its classes and workshops. see Garden Fest > 1

Tea Party hosting meeting Friday Contributed report

The Goochland Tea Party will be hosting a meeting from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at 2955 River Road West in Goochland, with guest speaker Sandy Rios, the director of governmental affairs for the American Family Association. Rios also serves as vice president of FamilyPac Federal, as a conservative columnist and host of Sandy Rios in the Morning on American Family Radio Talk.
