Local runner logging the miles to help fight cancer Carolyn McKann set to run marathon in Greece in November By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Since she expected to hit the field for softball practice after school let out on March 25, 2013, Katie Anderson made sure to load all of her gear into the back of her mother’s car that morning. Before school, however, the two would make a visit to Katie’s doctor. The 15-yearold student at Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School had been feeling lethargic for several days, and that morning had awakened complaining that she felt faint. McKann Katie’s mother, Carolyn McKann, said she thought her daughter might have had mononucleosis, but it took the pediatrician just moments to realize that wasn’t the case. Within just a few short hours, after being told to take her daughter immediately to Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center, McKann received the devastating news: It was cancer. ttention history buffs: No matter what your preferred style of hat, prepare to hang on to it. This year’s annual Field Day of the Past will kick off at 8 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, and run through

Sunday, Sept. 21. Once again, the event will offer a plethora of past-themed entertainment options, from the much-loved tractor pull events to pig races to recreations of Civil War encampments. A family-friendly event now in its 23rd year, Field Day also offers music, food and plenty of activities for children and adults alike. History enthusiasts will appreciate the atmosphere of bygone eras and the demonstrations of 17th century woodworking and 18th centusee Field Day > 8
