County unveils new Hadensville fire station plan

Volunteer signing off after three decades with fire department

s volunteers with Hadensville Company 6 fire and rescue gathered to see the plans for their future firehouse Thursday, many were also wrestling with the knowledge that they would soon be losing a cherished

part of their past. Last week, after 34 years with the company, volunteer Kenny Waddy announced his retirement. “It was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make, because I love it so much,” said Waddy, who has served as lieutenant, captain and district chief during his three-plus decades of service.

Waddy cited an ongoing back injury as his primary reason for retiring. The news was met with shock by many of the volunteers, including Pam Johnson, who has known Waddy since she first joined Company 6. “His dedication to the community is

As the sun dipped low Thursday afternoon, a handful of Hadensville residents gathered in the Company 6 firehouse to get a first look at the plans for the new station. Seated in folding chairs placed where the fire trucks would normally be parked, those in attendance listened as Goochland Fire Chief Bill MacKay described the special features that would be part of the new 12,000 square-foot building, which is set to be built across the street from the current location. One key amenity? A community room, which will offer space for residents of western Goochland to hold meetings and other events. “We knew when designing the building that there was a need for a place for to hold community-based events,” MacKay said. “I think the committee heard that and it’s been incorporated.” Other features of the new building include three separate sleeping rooms, a suite of offices and a full kitchen. There also will be easier access to the bay where the trucks are kept, allowing volunteers to save precious
