Making sense of scents Resident’s invention could mean new hope for those without ability to smell

magine, for a moment, if you suddenly lost your sense of smell.

What would it be like if you could no longer detect the scent of spring flowers or perfume or the aroma of soup simmering on the stove?

Goochland resident Dr. Richard Costanzo has never experienced this kind of loss — called anosmia in medical parlance — but his decades of research on the way we use our sense of smell could soon make a world of difference to those who have.

The Goochland County Historical Society is headed to jail.

Well, sort of.

The Goochland County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously during its meeting on May 6 to approve the lease of the county’s historic former jail building to the historical society.

According to a lease agreement presented during the meeting by county administrator Rebecca Dickson, the historical society intends to use the 2,400-square-foot space for historical programs, tours and exhibits.

The building, which is now used primarily for storage and is not open to the public, is thought to have been constructed in the 1820s.

According to historical society president Phyllis Silber, the organization has been eyeing the old jail, located in the courthouse area, for years but was unable to secure the

s the staff of the Goochland Parks and Recreation Department continues to count down to the start of the 2014 summer season, one thing is clear: This ain’t your parents’ summer camp.

If going to camp in the old days meant taking part in a handful of games and a few arts and crafts activities, the offerings planned for this year’s camps promise a significant upgrade.

How significant?

Think more options, improved convenience for parents … and Jedis.

That’s right, this year’s summer camp series includes a “Jedi In Training” session in which campers will learn about famous Jedis from the

Star Wars movie series, see how Jedis live and even make their own light sabers.

This is in addition to “Monster Madness” camp (in which campers will create their own recycled monster), and “A Pirate’s Life for Me!,” a camp in which kids will have a chance to spend a week playing pirate.

If it all sounds like fun and games, it is. But program coordinator Jessica Kronberg insists there is a method to the madness when it comes to deciding what kids of camps

HEALTH: News That’s Good for You

Free Clinic marks Mental Health Month Annual effort helps promote overall wellness Contributed Report

The theme for this year’s Mental Health Month, celebrated every May, is “Mind Your Health,” a theme that calls attention to the need for all Americans to achieve wellness and good mental and overall health.

As part of its ongoing mission, Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services (GFCFS) provides mental health assessments and treatment to Goochland residents on need.

Last year, GFCFS, saw more than 90 clients in 382 appointments in its mental health program.

GFCFS sees clients that are uninsured, low-income, and

do not have serious mental illness such as schizophrenia or bi-polar disorders. Most are struggling with mood disorders such as depression and anxiety.

“Wellness is essential to living a full and productive life,” Krista Casebolt, Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services’ psychiatric nurse practioner, said. “It’s about keeping healthy as well as getting healthy.”

Casebolt said wellness is more than absence of disease.

“It involves mental and social well-being. Mental health is an essential component of overall health. The fact is our overall well-being is tied to the balance that exists between our emotional, physical, spiritual and mental health. “Everyone is at risk of stress given challenges at work and at home,” Casebolt said, but there are steps that can

help everyone achieve wellness.

These involve a balanced diet, regular exercise, enough sleep, a sense of self-worth, development of coping skills that promote resiliency, emotional awareness, and connections to family, friends and the community.

Casebolt said these steps can be complemented through regular mental health checkups.

“Just as we check our blood pressure and get cancer screenings, it’s a good idea to take periodic stock of our emotional well-being. One recent study said everyone should get their mental health checked as often as they get a physical, and many doctors routinely screen for mental health, which typically include a series of questions about lifestyle, eating and drinking habits and mental

wellness. A checkup doesn’t require a special trip to the doctor. There also are online screening tools you can use.

While conditions like depression are common — roughly one in five Americans have a mental health condition — they are extremely treatable.”

Fully embracing the concept of wellness improves health in the mind, body and spirit, it maximizes one’s potential to lead a full and productive life.

Using strategies that promote resiliency and strengthen mental health leads to improved overall health.

First Goochland Pet Expo set for May 31 Contributed Report

The first-ever Goochland Pet Expo will be held at from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, in the Midpoint Industrial Park, 113 Midpoint Drive in Goochland.

When it comes to STEM, mentors are key

After spending part of a recent afternoon in Dr. Richard Costanzo’s lab at the Medical College of Virginia (see story, page 1), I came away convinced of two things.

The first: A scientific mind at work is an amazing thing to witness. The second: I do not have such a mind.

Concerning the latter, I am not overly worried. While I wish I could spout off the atomic number of the element chromium (24, in case you’re wondering, and, yes, I absolutely had to look that up), or solve complex engineering problems, I suppose I can be content to excel — or at least get by — in other areas.

When it comes to being able to watch a truly gifted scientist at work, however, I am reminded of the continued efforts of American educational institutions to promote students’ interest in — and access to — the fields of science, technology, engineering and math, collectively known as the STEM fields.

When I was in school, I can distinctly remember a kind of self-sorting that took place when it came to academic subjects. At a certain point, students began to identify themselves as either

“math and science” students or “humanities” students.

A well-rounded education, of course, includes healthy doses of both scientific and creative disciplines (and Costanzo’s work illustrates how both can come together to create something truly groundbreaking).

Costanzo has been a strong supporter of science education, having volunteered in Goochland County Public Schools for many years. Simply put, “I like to hook people on science,” Costanzo said, noting that he is where he is today in part because he had wonderful mentors.

Fortunately, there are others out there like Costanzo, those who see STEM subjects as things that students can enjoy, rather than suffer through.

Perhaps the best thing we can do for our young students, from an educational standpoint, is to provide talented young minds the opportunity and encouragement they need to embrace the sciences. Not all of them will ultimately choose that path but, at the very least, they will come away as well-rounded individuals, capable of examining the world around them and drawing conclusions on their own.

I don’t have any hard science to back it up, but, at least in my mind, that’s the whole idea of education in the first place.

Students dig in to study nature

What started as a small seed grew over the course of last weekend for third graders at Goochland’s Byrd Elementary School.

Each year, the third grade classes visit Shalom Farms at Westview on the James to learn about conservation practices, planting, soil and organic farming practices.

This year, third grade teachers decided to take this project one step further.

From this seed of thought came the Environmental Education Weekend 2014. Students spent the weekend getting dirty and learning about topics they chose.

Teachers designed the curriculum based on interest surveys completed with the students. Topics of interest included fishing, canning, beekeeping, organic gardening, poultry and soap making. Students were

able to see each of these activities first-hand and participate in the process.

The weekend event was offered to the students free of charge thanks to funding by The Center for Rural Culture, the Goochland Rotary Club and an anonymous donation. A grant also was awarded to the Third Grade Team at Byrd to help create and enhance an Environmental Education Building at Westview on the James. The goal is for this “Enviro Hut” to become a place for all Goochland County students to visit and learn about nature and important environmental issues.

This renovation and implementation will progress in the next few months.

A mother’s love is greatest gift of all

At age 44, my life was busily progressing up and down the ladder of success, centered around strategic career moves that would allow me to achieve the success I so aggressively sought.

Caregiving was the furthest thing from my mind on the day I got the call from my mother informing me she had been diagnosed with cancer.

I took the news in stride, never realizing the life-changing affects those simple words had on my mother ’s life, and eventually mine.

A credit to her tenacious nature and irrevocable spirit, she fought the brave fight during the first years of the disease’s relentless assault, and I went on with my life, only briefly interrupting it to take her to an occasional doctor’s appointment.

As the months progressed, the disease became more debilitating,

and caring for my mother became almost full-time work. I responded by hiring a lady to sit with her during the day, fix her meals, and provide the support she needed.

I realized we were reaching a painful emotional intersection, where decisions would have to be made, none of them easy.

Mother continued from >6 daily duties of life, and needed full-time nursing care.

My sister and I searched facilities in the area, none of which seemed right. Although cancer had ravaged my mother’s frail body, it hadn’t touched a still active and creative mind, and she made us promise to keep her at home for as long as possible.

It was then that I realized the most important question facing us was not financial, but emotional. Protecting my mother’s dignity became top priority, eventually leading to some life-changing decisions for both of us.

So, it was with great hesitancy that I moved home to care for her, taking a leave of absence from work and devoting most of my time to her care.

She made the job easy, and it wasn’t many days later when I knew I had made the right decision. Keeping a promise to protect her from the loneliness and desperation of a chronic disease, I kept her at home for more than a year.

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County During that time, we laughed, cried and faced the reality that faced us with a sense of togetherness. That’s not to say there weren’t tough and difficult days, much harder on her than me.

Through it all, she remained constant in the one role she had mastered and dedicated herself to: being a mother.

After providing a lifetime of guidance, an endless multitude of consoling hugs, bandaging too many skinned knees to count and almost never eating a meal sitting down, she provided her final and greatest gift of all: love in the face of adversity.

Those final months allowed me to tie all the loose ends, to get answers to those final few questions I had.

It allowed her to keep performing what she considered her most important role, that of mother.

She did that so well her spirit still remains alive in her children and grandchildren not only on Mother’s Day, but every day of the year.

And we owe that to one amazing person: our mother.

Rassawek Jubilee to kick off June 7 Annual event celebrates history and handicrafts of Virginia

This June, for the fourth year in a row, Rassaweck Vineyard in Columbia will host its annual Spring Jubilee.

The event, which organizers said is aimed at highlighting the area’s cultural traditions, will feature wine, music, art and a chance to celebrate the rich history of Virginia’s craftsmen.

This year’s Rassawek Spring Jubilee also will serve to raise much-needed funds for veterans

and military families in need of safe, affordable housing.

Ten percent of the net proceeds from the festival will be given to the Richmond Habitat for Humanity’s Habitat for Heroes program, which offers a path to home ownership to those actively serving or who have served in our nation’s armed forces.

“Rassawek Spring Jubilee provides a unique event for the whole family that celebrates the local, the handmade, and the homegrown,” Joe Liesfeld, owner of Rassawek Vineyard, said. “We’re excited to be working with many local organizations to spotlight their service to the region and help them further their mission by participating in the Jubilee.”

Also taking part in this year’s event will be numerous local civic and community organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services, the Goochland Rotary Club, the Second Union Rosenwald School and the Families of the Wounded Fund, an organization providing support to families of service men and women who have been injured in combat or in support of combat operations.

THE MEANING OF MEMORIAL DAY Celebrations honor those men and women who gave all for their country

And while those in attendance will bow their heads in honor of those who have given their lives in service to their country, the true meaning of the day will continue to be something of a mystery to many others.

Though many people are quick to refer to Memorial Day as the unofficial beginning of summer, the day is much more than that. Initially known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day to remember those military members who died in service of the country.

The origins of Memorial Day remain a topic of debate. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, New York, as the official birthplace of Memorial Day. However, the roots of Memorial Day likely run much deeper, as researchers at Duke

University note that during the Civil War, organized women’s groups in the South had begun to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers.

Memorial Day as we know it today can likely be traced to Charleston, South Carolina, where teachers, missionaries and some members of the press gathered on May 1, 1865, to honor fallen soldiers. During the Civil War, captured Union soldiers were held at the Charleston Race Course and hundreds died during captivity.

Upon their deaths, soldiers were buried in unmarked graves.

When the Civil War ended, the May Day gathering was organized as a memorial to all the men who had died during captivity. The burial ground was landscaped, and those freed as a result of the Civil War played an integral role in the event at the Charleston Race Course.

While the event in Charleston might have been the first Memorial Day-type celebration in the Southern United States, Gen. John A. Logan is often cited as inspiring similar events in the North. As commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, a

veterans’ organization for men who served in the Civil War, Gen. Logan issued a proclamation just five days after the Charleston event that called for Decoration Day to be observed annually across the country. Logan preferred the event not be held on the anniversary of any particular battle, and thus the day was observed for the first time on May 30. Celebrating the day in May also was significant to event organizers because May is a month when flowers are in bloom, making it easier for observers of the holiday to place flowers on the graves of fallen soldiers.

In 1868, events were held at more than 180 cemeteries in 27 states, and those figures nearly doubled in 1869.

By 1890, every Northern state officially recognized Decoration Day as a state holiday. But Southern states honored their dead on a different day until after World War I, when the holiday was changed to recognize Americans who died in any war and not just the Civil War. Nearly every state now celebrates Memorial Day, a name for the holiday first used in 1882, on the last Monday in May.

According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, there are 1.8 million veterans age 35 and younger and there are 3.5 million veterans with a serviceconnected disability. Their lives have been changed forever by their service to our country, and like all veterans, we owe them a debt of gratitude.

Maj. Dan Gregory, an active duty serviceman and a member of American Legion Post 215 had this to say: “To those who came before, to those who currently are and to those who will eventually

raise their hands and make the pledge — you didn’t ask for recognition, and you never demanded homage for your efforts, but thank you for your service to this great nation. You need look no further than to an American flag flying in front of a neighbor’s house to see the result of your labor, and know that the nation continues to stand free.”

Poppies will be available the weekend before Memorial Day (at local stores and gas stations) and during the Memorial Day Ceremony held at the Goochland Courthouse Green at 10 a.m. on May 26. Your contribution, given in exchange for a poppy, supports our local veterans and their families.

Looking for something different for your children to do this summer?

Goochland 4-H Junior Camp will be held during the week of July 21-25 at the Jamestown 4-H Center in Williamsburg. Camp is open to young people ages 9 to 13 years old.

Campers select from a variety of classes, including kayaking, crafts, archery, wild life, canoeing, fishing and leather crafts.

Jamestown 4-H Camp is situated on 16 wooded and open acres, located outside of Williamsburg along the banks of the James River.

The facilities include air-conditioned cabins and lodges, a swimming pool with a diving board, air rifle and archery ranges, an amphitheater for campfire programs and picnic pavilions.

The recreation hall and dining facility also are airconditioned.

Campers are transported on county buses from Goochland County to 4H camp on Monday and returned safely back on Friday afternoon.

The camp fee covers lodging, meals, activities, transportation and programs.

ed crepe paper poppies, which symbolize the sacrifices made by our military servicemen and women, were inspired by the famous wartime poem, “In Flanders Fields” by Lt. Col. John McCrae, which begins “In Flanders Fields the poppies blow between the crosses row on row …” Until recently, 100 percent of the donated poppy funds were used to help veterans. Due to the great needs of today’s military families, the American Legion (AL) recently expanded the use of these funds to include active duty service members and their families who demonstrate a financial or medical need.

The American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) purchases the poppies and then accepts donations for them from the public. Ninety percent of the funds collected by Post 215’s ALA members stay in the Goochland community with 10 percent going into the state fund for veterans and active duty military support.

Costanzo continued from >1 Costanzo, a professor of physiology and biophysics in the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, recently filed a patent for a device that could help those suffering from anosmia regain their ability to smell. With Dr. Daniel Coelho, an assistant professor in VCU’s Department of Otolaryngology, he has designed a device that would take the place of the damaged nerves that once allowed a person’s brain to interpret smells. The project, still in its early design phase, is based on the same sort of technology as a cochlear implant, a device that allows those with hearing impairments to perceive sound.

Of course, the groundbreaking work behind Costanzo and Coelho’s invention is about more than offering a chance to enjoy the smell of flowers or soup.

People who lose their sense of smell, perhaps due to a stroke or some trauma to the nerves in the nasal cavity, are three times more likely to suffer what Costanzo and his colleagues refer to as a “hazardous event.”

Consider, Costanzo said, if you couldn’t smell that the food on your stove was burning or that you were in the presence of a dangerous chemical.

Either situation could easily lead to injury — or worse.

At the end of the day, Costanzo said, “it becomes a quality of life issue.”

Having studied the science of smell for the better part of 40 years, Costanzo has become a sought-after source of information by both physicians and researchers alike.

“He’s very passionate about what he does,” said Dr. Laurence DiNardo, chair and professor of head and neck surgery in the VCU Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery and one of many physicians who has worked closely with Costanzo.

What Costanzo is doing is “taking research and translating that into clinical work,” which will directly help patients, DiNardo said. “It’s very exciting.” *** To get a sense of what has kept Costanzo going all these years, doggedly pursuing the next idea and the next breakthrough, it helps to understand where it all started.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Costanzo developed a love of science early in life. Alongside his brother William, he spent countless hours in the basement of his childhood home experimenting with anything he could get his hands on.

— Dr. Richard Costanzo on an invention that could help people regain a lost sense of smell. ence, Costanzo said he almost certainly would have gone into engineering — he has always had a soft spot, he admitted, for circuitry.

He also, it seems, is something of a natural with kids.

Over the years, Costanzo has made a veritable second career out of mentoring students of all ages.

He has been visiting elementary school since his own children were young, always toting along his human brain in a jar — not a model, mind you, but a real human brain — and always ready to answer whatever questions the students are able to throw his way.

There have been plenty of older “kids” he’s worked with as well, medical students who have gone on to their own practices but still keep in touch.

Taylor Pence, a recent graduate of Virginia Tech who plans to start medical school in August, has been working in Costanzo’s lab for the past few months.” The work is challenging, Pence said, but Costanzo’s approach makes it enjoyable.

“It’s great,” Pence said. “His enthusiasm definitely rubs off.”

Costanzo’s enthusiasm is on full display when he talks about his work, particularly the project with Dr. Coehlo.

“There are a lot more things that need to come together,” Costanzo said, “but this is the closest I’ve ever come to finding a solution for people with anosmia. This idea — I wouldn’t call it a slam dunk — but it’s much closer to feasibility than we’ve ever been.”

It’s clear that Costanzo still finds joy in solving puzzles and unearthing new discoveries. At a point when some people might be considering retirement, Costanzo can often appear like a man just hitting his stride.

He mentions the stacks of binders he has around his home and office, the “Aha Notebooks,” as he calls them, filled with all of his good— and occasionally less good — ideas.

“Most of the time I wake up in the morning with a whole bunch of new ideas,” Costanzo said. “This is a fun time for me.”

An activity series will feature a Mythbusters-themed camp and a camp that explores the history of games (“Let the Games Begin!”).

Three day trips are planned, including a rafting trip down the James River and a trip to Kings Dominion.

Along with all of this, of course, are the camps that offer kids a chance to hit the field. Tennis, volleyball and cheerleading camps will all be offered through the Sports Series, as well as a Richmond Strikers Soccer Camp and a Flying Squirrels Baseball Camp, featuring on-field instruction from current Flying Squirrels players and coaches.

The department also has taken steps to make getting kids off to camp more convenient this year, offering parents the opportunity to fill out camper packets and pay camp fees online. They also have increased “after camp care” hours, allowing parents to drop off campers as early as 7:30 a.m. and pick up as late as 6 p.m.

Registration for Goochland County Parks and Recreation summer camps is now open, and the cost for most camps starts at $85 per week (financial aid is available).

Heat, numbers exhaust Lady Bulldogs

Goochland falls to sixth ranked Trinity

T

he Goochland High School girls’ soccer team has only two blemishes on an otherwise perfect record for the 2014 season.

Both of those losses came at the hands of non-district foe Trinity, a team that consistently

home field.

“Trinity plays a higher level of soccer and we need that to improve,” Bulldogs head coach Tom Reid said. “We had to play short because of injuries and other reasons The girls played well in the first half before the heat and lack of subs began to take its toll on the Lady Bulldogs.”

But the gritty effort that kept the game knotted at one until early in the second half didn’t go unnoticed, and Reid also sees the benefits of playing up in the competition field.

Goochland teachers take part in ‘Children’s Engineering’ class Contributed Report

Over the past six and a half months, nine Goochland County teachers have participated as students in James Madison University’s three-credit graduate class in Children’s Engineering.

They’ve worked to become experts in designing and delivering classroom instruction centered on the principles of solving realistic problems and develop a basic understanding of the natural and humanly modified world around them.

Goochland County Public Schools hosted this course on-site in Goochland and deferred much of the associated cost. Instructional approaches that focus on student engagement, critical thinking, creativity and deep learning are significant priorities reflected in the division’s recently-adopted strategic plan. Participating teachers, shown are Andrea Cachina, Sara DeLong, Betsy Alvis, Libby Routson, Jamie-Ellen Spessard, Kim Wilson, Tim Greenway, Rhonda Kass and Tom Case.
