all them the group that keeps on giving. How else to describe the 18 Goochland residents honored on Nov. 14 by the Goochland County Chamber of Commerce during the 2013 Outstanding Volunteer Luncheon? Represented among them were those who pitch in to help school children, deliver meals to seniors and teach residents about the preservation of rural cul-

ture. Each honoree was selected by a local nonprofit organization for their service and dedication, and each received a plaque and warm introduction to those gathered at the Hermitage Country Club in their honor. This year’s ceremony was sponsored by Davenport & Company, District 3 Supervisor Ned Creasey, Reynolds Community College, and Georgia Rae Roberts with West End Realty. Goochland County has been named a certified Green School Division by the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA), in recognition of the division’s efforts to implement several measures to reduce the carbon emissions of both the division itself and the local community. Chief among these efforts was the school board’s establishment of an Energy Conservation Committee. The division has also created outdoor learning spaces used in part for environmental education at all three elementary schools. A greenhouse is under construction at Goochland Middle School that will offer students direct experiences with agricultural science and horticulture. “I’m thrilled about the progress we’ve made and our partnership with the committee,” said superintendent Dr. James Lane . “We are exploring ways to maximize the resources we have in order to invest our full support into our mission, and to teach students to do the same.” School leaders will accept the award during the VSBA’s annual convention this week in Williamsburg.
