Monks to hold mixer Oct. 19 By Korey Hughes Contributing Writer

Monks are devout religious figures who dress in robes, but it would be fair to say that many private citizens don’t know much about their way of life. But, during the “Meet the Monks: A Day of Fellowship, Food and Fun at the Abbey” event that will happen on Saturday, Oct. 19, area residents will be able to interact with a local group of St. Benedictine monks. The event will get underway at Mother Mary of the Church Abbey at 12829 River Road in Goochland from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Father Adrian Harmening, prior and administrator at Mary Mother of the Church Abbey, see Monks > page 4

Event connected area families with new (four-legged) friends By Ken Odor Special Correspondent

Need a friend? You just might be in luck if you visit the Goochland Animal Shelter, where a variety of dogs and cats are waiting to make friends with prospective new owners. Like Wes Royer, who last Saturday, brought

his daughters Avery, 3, and one-year-old Ella to the shelter at Hidden Rock Park. “We’re just here to see the animals,” said Royer, who said the family already had a yorkie – poodle mix and was looking for another poodle or poodle mix. The Royers were just one family among many that turned out for the shelter’s open house to showcase the recent facelift at the

facility. “We just invited the public out to see what’s going on,” said Chief Animal Control Officer “Corky” Marks. His staff consists of officers Tim Clough and Bobby Herndon as well as Shelter Attendant Julie Lawrence, who see Pets > page 4
