Saturday was a proud day for the Rev. James E. Waldrop Sr. and family and friends who dedicated the graves of two Confederate soldiers who are buried in the Thurston Family Cemetery off Davis Mill Road in Goochland. Confederate soldiers William Granville Hix and William Henry Mills were honored by a crowd estimated at more than 200 on property owned by Waldrop and his family. “We are celebrating the lives of two of our ancestors who fought valiantly for the South,” Waldrop said with the natural accent of a Southern gentleman. Barbara Fleming, 65, of Goochland, had the honor of unveiling the headstone of Hix, who was her great-greatgrandfather. “William Granville Hix, he was in Company B of the 44th Virginia Infantry, which was the Goochland unit,” Waldrop said following the ceremony.

“He and two of his brothers enlisted the same day – June 3, 1862 – near Hadensville Post Office.” Mills’ headstone was unveiled by John Alexander, 75, of Henrico. “I’ve been wanting to come out here and find this gravestone for a long time,” Alexander said. Mills was a member of the 56th Virginia Infantry and was wounded in the neck in the Battle of Gettysburg, Alexander said. Mills also was present when Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union Gen. Ulysses S. Grant on April 9, 1865, at Appomattox Court House, Alexander added. Mary G. Vial, 70, of Henrico, who serves as president of the General Stuart Chapter 2195 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, also attended Saturday’s dedication to honor the Confederate soldiers.
