Goochland High School graduates receive diplomas on UVa campus By Ben Orcutt Staff Writer
CHARLOTTESVILLE – High school graduation is a big day, so it was only fitting that the Goochland High School Class of 2013 hold commencement ceremonies in a big place: the John Paul Jones Arena on the campus of the University of Virginia. It also was fitting that the valedictorian, Nicholas Maguire, is headed to U.Va. in the fall where he said he
plans to study computer science. In his valedictory address, Maguire said that earning a high school diploma is like being given a ticket “onto the Slip ’n’ Slide of life.” “I’m sure there will be many twists and turns, but we have learned the skills that will allow us to succeed and I have no doubt that the Class of 2013 will find success wherever it goes,” he said. “We have been prepared for whatever life throws at us and by virtue of this preparation
we have nothing to fear.” During her salutatory address, Evelyn “Brett” Alvis recounted a time in middle school when she fell in the hallway while rushing to board the school bus that would take her home. “My advice to my fellow graduates,” Alvis said, “seize every opportunity you can. Don’t just lie on your back when you fall like you have the weight of the world on see Grads >page 2
2013 marks the 100th anniversary of the American Cancer Society, and the organization will continue its charitable efforts by hosting over 30 Relay for Life events throughout the state of Virginia by year’s end. The Goochland Relay for Life will get underway at Goochland Elementary School at 3150 River Road West in Goochland from 6 p.m. on Friday, June 7 to 6 a.m. on Saturday, May 8. But, if you’re unfamiliar with Relay for Life, the run-walk is the American Cancer Society’s annual fundraiser that helps the organization to continue its fight against the disease. Emily Bacalis is the American Cancer Society’s staff partner for the Goochland Relay for Life event. Bacalis, who is also responsible for organizing similar events in localities such as Louisa, Lunenburg and Nottoway, said that Relay for Life helps her organization to fund its programs. “All of the money that we raise
from our signature event goes toward the programs and services that we offer cancer survivors and for research to find a cure and treatment in that area,” Bacalis said. Although the American Cancer Society sponsors Relay for Life, private residents and organizations help to raise donations by participating in the run-walk. “We have several local citizens who are leaders, but their organizations get involved in Relay for Life,” Bacalis said. “In Goochland, we will have church groups there with their congregations along with civic organizations such as the Lions Club and the Goochland Fire Rescue Squad.” Bacalis said that $5.4 million dollars raised during the 2012 Relay for Life events went to local medical facilities such as Virginia Commonwealth University Health System, Eastern Virginia Medical School and the University of Virginia Health System.
